Walmart Crime Report December 2023

Walmart had at least thirteen more shootings in December 2023, with at least four of them fatal, including two officer involved shootings, one of those was a theft suspect shot by after he allegedly stabbed the officer, there were also at least seven or eight injuries from the shootings as well as several vehicles shot. On both the Saturday before Christmas and New Years Eve there were three shootings each, with all three of them on Christmas Eve in the store, including one of the fatal officer involved shootings; most shootings have always been in the parking lot. There were also a total of eleven deaths last month, including the four from shootings, two more bodies found on their premises, one of which was a suspected overdose, one death due to a medical emergency, three deaths in accidents and one death when car caught fire.

In previous months of the year Walmart had eleven shootings and four deaths in January; fourteen shootings and six deaths in February; thirteen shootings and fourteen deaths in March; fourteen shootings and seven deaths in April; eighteen or nineteen shootings and thirteen deaths in May; twelve shootings and six deaths in June; nine shootings and eight deaths in July; four shootings and ten deaths in August; seven shootings and thirteen deaths in September; eight shootings and ten deaths in October; and sixteen shootings and eleven deaths in November; for a total of one hundred-thirty-nine shootings and one-hundred-two deaths on their property or related to their business, not including another seven deaths reported last month related to magnetic balls that were recalled, but these deaths may have been over a course of several years, there were also thousands more hospitalized, so it's hard to imagine why they weren't recalled much earlier.

One of the officer involved shootings raised questions in the Spokane area about the responsibility of police working security off duty, which is long overdue. There should be many questions about possible conflicts of interests liability, whether the police are more concerned about the best interests and security of the public or the interests of corporations paying them and many other potential problems, but it's virtually never discussed publicly. One obvious problem that came up a few months ago in Kansas when a couple police officers asked a Walmart customer walking out with a five dollar Pizza if he had a receipt, and when he said yes, but kept walking, because he felt he didn't need to show it (whether he knew it or not, they're supposed to have probable cause before demanding a receipt check, and police should have known it), and the police tackled him, resulting in disciplinary action and a possible lawsuit, which could be against the police involved, the police department, or Walmart, and tax payers could be stuck with the bill, not to mention this was assault and other criminal behavior by police working for Walmart, clearly indicating they put Walmart's interest ahead of the safety of the public or justice 2 officers disciplined for use of force over $5 pizza during Walmart receipt check 06/13/2023 .

If you search the internet on the subject you might find, as I did, that what little discussion on the issue there is is mostly from people that have a financial interest in it, not necessarily the best interest of the public, although they probably claim they're looking for the best interest of the public. Perhaps the best representative of the people among these sources is insurance companies, who I rarely ever agree with, even if they're more concerned with reducing liability than the interests of the public, as indicated in this article this article Pros and Cons to Hiring Off-Duty Police Officers as Security Guards 03/14/2023 This points out that they shouldn't use government equipment and that they don't always make situations safer, as the Kansas incident shows; but other sources indicate police or private security organizations don't take these recommendations.

Another source Q: Why are off duty police officer working as part-time security guard allowed to wear tax payer supplied uniforms? Dec. 2023 indicates decisions about this are made by independent police departments without much consistency, although some states might provide some regulations, and that California allows them to use government uniforms, without saying if they can use government guns, and says they're accountable to their employer, not the government, although they're still supposed to be accountable to the rule of law; but the law is never as as strictly enforced for police as the rest of us. A police web page, Hire Off-Duty Officer in Austin Texas area, seems more concerned with selling services for $50-$65 per hour per police officer, and another $20 per hour if cruisers are rented, than the best interests of the public, and, not surprisingly, a private for profit organization Echelon Protection & Surveillance: Off Duty Police Security tries to convince people they're looking out for their best interests, but it's more likely looking out for the best interests of their profits and the clients that hire them, so skepticism is advised.

In addition to the shootings they had last month they also had more than a dozen if not two dozen other gun related crimes on their premises, including domestic disputes, drug deals, confrontations with police, armed robberies or shopliftings, carjackings, and other crimes. There was also a murder and kidnapping arrested at Walmart, although the crimes didn't happen there; but there were at least two separate attempted kidnappings, one of a 4-year-old child, and another of a baby, which was kidnapped before catching the kidnapper, that did happen at their store.

There have been stories about scam artists collecting data from Walmart gift cards and using them leaving customers with useless cards for years, but last month there were at least five people in the news that were victims of this and Walmart refuses to secure the cards they sell or take any responsibility. There was also one incident last month where someone rung up a gift card without paying for it, leaving the transaction open hoping the next customer won't notice it when they ring it up and will pay for it without realizing it. The customer did notice and called for help, the employee explained this was a common scam and simply canceled the transaction. But this isn't the first time this has happened and many other people were presumably scammed by this, yet Walmart refuses to take responsibility or prevent it from happening somehow either. In some cases when these scams happen if people stand up for their rights, and lets others know, Walmart takes responsibility, but only after their reputation is at risk as a result of the publicity, and there was a classic case when an employee stole a customers truck in the nineties that they threatened the victim to try to prevent him from talking, but after it was reported in the news they had to replace the vehicle stolen while in their care by their employee.

Some reports indicate that holiday crime may have past a peak, when there were anual Black Friday riots going viral every year, but at least one store in Alabama claims that's not the case. But even if it is the case, why? No discussion has taken place in the media about the leading causes of crime or violence, yrt Walmart must be aware of it, and previously leaked studies, like one that was buried when it showed a security guard patrolling the parking lot could greatly reduce crime. Walmart didn't want to pay for this, but the study was leaked to "The High Cost Of Low Prices" documentary. There's advertising or online marketing might have been responsible, if there was a reduction in Black Friday riots, but it may have just spread throughout the month, or media may not be reporting as reliably as they used to, as some evidence implies.

There's also a steady increase in complaints about self-checkout or receipt checks, with over a dozen stories about this every month. Yet Walmart is slow to cut back on it, although there have been a few areas hiring more cashiers, finally. While they're finally cutting back a little on cashiers, they're increasing use of delivery drones, even though there are already problems with them, including angry neighbors, crashes of the drones, and even a couple, at least that started fires. It may be a matter of time before angry neighbors shoot at them, and even though Walmart is never held accountable for angering people, there's little doubt the police will go after their victims if they cross the line even a little.

Another police officer has been arrested for stealing from Walmart five times; they never hesitate to charge police when they steal from the rich, but when they abuse or even kill the poor, both the police unions and police departments fight tooth and nail to avoid prosecuting them, even if a few rare cases finally do get prosecuted. There was also a Walmart employee arrested for taking pictures in bathroom stalls, which is surprisingly common.

In addition to the three fatal crashes and one fatal car fire, there were close to two dozen, if not more, major accidents, including one where the suspect was charged with attempted murder, another where a driver rammed an employee intentionally, another where a suspect rammed two police vehicles, hit and runs, at least half a dozen, if not a dozen or more major injuries, drunken driving, chases, stolen vehicles, and more automobile crimes.

They also had at least four fires, one a clear case of arson, with at least one or two of the others unsolved, several knife attacks, including one attempt to stab a police officer and another suspect stabbing himself. There were also a large variety of additional crimes, including a driver damaging gas tanks, customers spitting on employees, attacks on police, shoplifters spraying mace on loss prevention officers, assaults and much more.

As I said earlier there was a recall of magnetic balls which related to at least seven deaths and thousands of hospitalizations, but they took place over a period of years, raising doubts about why they didn't do anything sooner. There were also at least three other major recalls, one of frozen food that may have Listeria, which seems to happen every few months if not more often, Air Fryers and unrelated blenders which may be dangerous including parts falling off that may cut people.

Do Walmart poles in Kansas or Maine somehow lure drivers to crash into them? or is there some other reason the same two or three poles keep getting crashed into by cars?

Would you work an eight or nine hour shift free at Walmart just to brag about it on Social media? Many people think this is stupid since there are so many more worthy causes.

Have you ever scheduled a self-checkout party for customers recruited to work by checking themselves out? If not, you wouldn't be first anymore, and even though Walmart and the police weren't happy about it someone in New Jersey turned this into a charity event.

And this wasn't the only time; another employee, er I mean customer asked to be invited to the company Christmas Party, which employees often say isn't worth attending.

How often do homeless people spray themselves, Walmart shelves and other stuff with Lysol? Only at Walmart?

What would Robin Hood do if he worked for Walmart? He might get arrested after giving thousands of dollars of merchandise, including electronic equipment away for free in Louisiana, or next time in your state.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Decatur Alabama Walmart sees more thefts ahead of Christmas 12/01/2023

A Decatur couple and an Athens woman allegedly walked out of the Walmart on Spring Avenue with over a thousand dollars of unpaid goods in their shopping carts in separate incidents ahead of the holiday season, according to affidavits by Decatur police officers.

Robin Lee Buckman, 54, and Kewa Buckman, 52, were each held in Morgan County Jail on Friday in lieu of $15,000 bonds on charges of third-degree burglary. Kewa Buckman was arrested Wednesday, and Robin Buckman was arrested Nov. 20.

Walmart notified the Decatur Police Department of a theft from the business at 2800 Spring Ave. S.W. on Oct. 27.

Walmart reported that a male and female "failed to purchase two HP 15 computers, two Razer Deathadder V3 PRO gaming mice, and two trays of cupcakes, the total value of $1,311.96, before passing the last point of sale,” according to a Nov. 9 Property Crimes Unit detective’s affidavit.

Walmart Asset Protection employees recognized the couple as Robin and Kewa Buckman due to previous thefts at the business, according to the affidavit.

Morgan County arrest reports show the Buckmans were arrested for theft the week of April 24-30.

According to the affidavit, police confirmed the Buckmans were previously advised not to enter Walmart on April 30. Police also positively identified the couple by comparing their previous jail photos with security video from Walmart.

Third-degree burglary, a Class C felony, is defined as someone unlawfully entering or remaining in a building with the intent to commit a crime. Class C felonies are punishable in Alabama by up to 10 years in prison.

In July 2022, Redstone Federal Credit Union filed a civil suit against the Buckmans in Morgan County District Court. The complaint alleges the Buckmans overdrew their bank account by thousands of dollars. “The account was overdrawn in the amount of $4,794.66 on or about Nov. 10, 2021, and Defendants have failed or refused to make good Plaintiff’s loss,” the complaint reads.

The credit union also sought reimbursement for attorney fees and interest on the allegedly delinquent sum for a total of $6,392.99.

A copy of the Buckmans’ application for a checking account was attached to the complaint and was signed by Kewa Buckman as owner of the account and Robin Buckman as joint owner.

The credit union moved to dismiss the case for unspecified reasons, and the motion was granted by a judge on Nov. 17.

An Athens woman was released from Morgan County Jail on Thursday evening where she had remained for 10 days on charges of second-degree retail theft. Her bond was set at $2,500.

Tracy Lynn Ramirez, 53, was arrested on Nov. 20 at the Spring Avenue Walmart by off-duty Decatur police Officer Malachi Compton, who was working security for the business at the time, according to an affidavit sworn to by Compton on Nov. 22.

“Tracy Ramirez walked past the last point of sale pushing a shopping cart with approximately 70 items that she did not pay for,” the affidavit reads. The dollar amount of the merchandise was $1,025.11. Ramirez made her initial appearance before Morgan County District Judge Shelly Waters on Nov. 22, who noted in a signed order that Ramirez is charged with a felony.

Retail theft is a relatively new charge that went into effect statewide Sept. 1 after the Legislature approved the Retail Theft Crime Prevention Act aimed at giving harsher penalties to retail thieves. Before the new legislation, theft from retailers fell under the broad umbrella of first-, second-, third- or fourth-degree theft, based on the value of the items stolen.

Violations of the new criminal code still carry punishments tied to the value of the property, but also allow prosecutors to increase the severity of the charge based on the cumulative value of stolen goods in specific time windows.

Retail theft between $500 and $2,500 is a second-degree offense and a Class C felony.

Under the old law, theft of goods valued under $1,500 resulted in a third-degree theft charge, a Class D felony.

Records show Ramirez requested court-appointed counsel due to substantial hardship and it was granted. She’s scheduled to reappear in court on Feb. 8.

Theft is not unusual at the Spring Avenue Walmart. Ten people were charged with retail theft in September for allegedly trying to steal from the business.

Depositions from Walmart’s asset protection investigators described various methods used by perpetrators: simple shoplifting, removing price tags and failing to scan all items at the self-checkout kiosk. Complete article

Self checkouts will be scrapped at Walmart, Costco, and Wegmans 12/01/2023

Self-checkouts at big retailers like Walmart and Costco could soon be a thing of the past, warn retail experts, and corporations are pinning it on crime.

"I think we are going to see the demise of self-checkouts very soon," said Phil Lempert, a food industry analyst.

Self-checkouts started cropping up in the late 80s and have become increasingly popular since the 00s, with stores like Walmart projecting to be 65% serviced by automation by 2025.

Even food retailers have hopped on the bandwagon with the founder and former CEO of Chipotle Steve Ells launching his next fast-food venture Kernel in New York City next year, which will be almost fully run by robots.

Self-checkout has always gotten mixed reviews from customers - while some prefer not having to interact with employees, others report frustration with technology mishaps and having to do the work themselves. Complete article

Deadly shooting at Spokane Wash. Walmart raises questions about off-duty officer's use of force 12/04/2023

SPOKANE, Wash. — Investigators with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office say a deadly shooting at a Walmart in north Spokane started when an off-duty police officer working private security for Walmart called for backup, when he noticed a shoplifting situation.

It's become increasingly common to see police be contracted out to work private security at retail stores. It was particularly prevalent when Camp Hope was at its peak; police would work around the clock security for the Walmart on Sprague.

It's known in Spokane Municipal Code as "Extra-Duty Employment."

Essentially, private organizations can employ Spokane Police as private security, so long as it's approved by Police Chief Craig Meidl.

With the surge of retail crime across Washington, this has become a more common practice. Store security cannot legally intervene with a shoplifter, but police can. But are there any limitations when an off-duty police officer is contracted to a private organization?

The answer is not really. They still act as commissioned police officers, not as private citizens.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, off-duty police are allowed to use only the amount of force reasonably necessary to stop an illegal act.

In other words, using force is allowed, so long as the situation calls for it.

In the case of Sunday's shooting, the incident began with shoplifting and sheriff's detectives say it escalated to the point of an officer firing a weapon. Complete article

La. Walmart employee arrested, accused of giving away thousands of dollars in merchandise 12/04/2023

BAKER - A worker at a Walmart store in Baker is charged with two felony counts after an investigation found he was giving thousands of dollars worth of electronic merchandise to others without collecting payment.

Quindall Ellis, 21, is accused of organized retail theft and theft over $25,000.

Baker police were called to the store on Friday after security officials there reviewed video recordings that reportedly showed the products being distributed to others.

A police report from the responding officer notes:

While in the Walmart Asset Protection office, I visually observed camera footage of the accused taking electronics from the cage and supplying "customers" with the merchandise without taking any form credit/debit card or dollars to complete transactions. Rome NY Walmart Fires Popular 27-Year Employee Right Before Xmas 12/05/2023

Looks like Rome Walmart has pulled a page out of the Ebenezer Scrooge playbook. A popular 27-year associate was unceremoniously sacked right before the Christmas season.

Loren Butters had worked at the Walmart store on Taberg Road in Rome since 1996. Just this past August their official Facebook page congratulated her on her 27-year work anniversary.

Reading just a few of the comments on that original thread last August revealed just how special an employee Loren was:
Loren Butters is such a dedicated, hard worker and always willing to help! Happy anniversary! They are blessed to have you!

My favorite person to see at work!

I've encountered her many times over the years while shopping there. Always willing to help and shows a big smile!

But just a few months later, Walmart decided they didn't appreciate Loren as much as they claimed. According to a family member, Loren was let go from her position at Walmart, with Christmas right around the corner. Complete article

Flagler sheriff: Woman pulled out gun during parking dispute outside Fla. Walmart 12/05/2023

Walmart worker who was fired without notice gets revenge on store 12/06/2023

A former Walmart worker exacted a small revenge on the store after he claimed he was unfairly fired without any notice.

TikTok user Ray posted a video with the caption: "POV: The petty worker going back to the job that fired them". The clip has had almost 210,000 views since it was added on his account earlier his week and initially shows him inside his ex-workplace.

He begins by stating: "They fired me on short notice, so you know I have to come back and make a mess." Ray then walks around the isles saying how good it feels to be back and that, "they probably miss me."

The seemingly disgruntled ex-employee starts taking some toys of a shelf and putting them on the floor while saying: "Whoever they hired for zoning in toys, they’re doing a pretty good job." The mischief continues throughout the store, including placing pumpkins on the floor, pulling big containers off their shelves and riding a small tricycle before replacing it on the rack - but in the wrong place.

He declares: “That's not my hub anymore. I’m a paying customer - I can do whatever I want,” and at one point is seen lifting weights in the exercise aisle saying that he doesn't even need to go to gym anymore because he can just do it there instead. Complete article

Walmart Is Selling Hanukkah Candles That Fund Anti-Arab Discrimination in Israel 12/08/2023

The candles benefit the Jewish National Fund, the largest private landowner in Israel, which refuses to lease to Arabs. Each year, in preparation for Hanukkah, many Jews across the United States purchase candles to light their menorahs. For those in areas where Walmart has squeezed out competitors, the limited options of Hanukkah candles to choose from will include Rite Lite, which the superstore stocks from New York to California and sells online. These candles are advertised as benefiting the Jewish National Fund, whose work is described as including “water resource management, tree planting and the preservation of Israel’s green spaces,” according to the candles’ packaging.

But the Jewish National Fund (JNF) is not some benevolent environmental steward. It is in fact the largest private landowner in Israel, and it has been systematically discriminating against Arabs in its dealings for decades, according to both the Israeli attorney general and human rights organizations.

JNF was founded in 1901 as a Zionist organization, collecting donations from around the world to purchase land for a Jewish state in what was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, JNF became a quasi-governmental organization, with formerly Palestinian lands annexed by the Israeli government transferred to JNF to manage. Between purchases and annexations, JNF reported that it owned $2 billion worth of land in 2014, per The Forward. According to the Yale School of the Environment, JNF holds 13 percent of all Israeli territory, making it the single largest private landowner in the country. Complete article

Amazon, Walmart and Target have a secret policy you need to know 12/09/2023

All three retailers don't want you to know about this (and they're not the only ones doing it).

The holiday season brings a massive surge in gift giving.

The internet and e-commerce has made that process easier in many ways as your aunts and uncles, grandparents and well-intentioned family and friends can now ship you those horrifying gifts you don't want but also giving you time to pretend you like it.

In many cases, gift exchanges have now become remote, and you no longer have to feign delight at the ugly sweater, novelty tie, book of poetry by a non-poet celebrity, or other terrible present you have been sent. ....

"For every $1 billion in sales, the average retailer incurs $165 million in merchandise returns," the NRF reported. Some $212 billion of the $816 billion in returns will be customers sending back digital orders. ....

Big retailers adopt no-return return policies

Sometimes it's cheaper for a digital retailer to simply tell a customer not to bother to return an item but still give them a refund. Complete article

KEEP WALKING Cop confirms Walmart shoppers can ‘walk on by’ when employees demand to see receipt – with a big legal ‘but’ 12/10/2023

"I just walked the parking lot for maybe 10 minutes, maybe a little less, just thinking, 'Oh my God, where did I park it? I can’t believe I forgot where I parked the car.' Laughing at myself," Kelly said.

She eventually began to accept that her car wasn't there and she returned to the store to alert employees, who helped her search. Complete article

‘EUREKA MOMENT’ ‘How is this possible?’ asks Canada Walmart shopper after losing $700 – then ‘light bulb went off’ & costly mistake made sense 12/12/2023

A WALMART shopper lost $700 but later realized the mistake that could have led to this loss.

Kevin Wilson, bought two gift cards totaling hundreds of dollars but discovered he only had 27 cents left when he went to use them for the first time.

The Walmart shopper, from Surrey, Canada, around 30 miles east of Vancouver, purchased these gift cards during a Black Friday promotion in November 2022.

He feared that he had fallen victim to a scam when he saw his money had disappeared when he used the cards at his local store in December 2022, according to CBC News.

Transaction records showed that the cards were used at a Walmart store in Richmond, British Columbia, and Mississauga, Ontario.

"I was in shock. The cards hadn't left my possession," Wilson said. Complete article

With Theft on the Rise, Dollar General, Walmart, and Other Retailers Ditch Self-Checkout Machines 12/12/2023

Retailers hoped to cut employee wages with self-checkout machines. It turns out they can't catch shoplifters.

Small retail businesses owners looking to cut costs should learn from the mistakes of their large corporate competitors, many of which are walking back their investments in self-checkout technology. Walmart, Target, and most recently Dollar General are all rethinking their DIY checkout systems, as losses from increased shoplifting have come to outweigh savings from reduced employee headcount.

General Dollar CEO Todd Vasos told investors during the company's third quarter earnings call last week that it plans to boost its employee wage budget over the next year in order to expand human supervision around self-checkout areas. A main reason for the move, Vasos said, was the rising rate of "shrink"--an industry term for shoplifting--that's eaten into Dollar General's bottom line.

The additional $150 million for "store labor hours" will be spent on beefing up staff around scanning and payment machines, and those employees will also provide timely service to clients who encounter snags, Vasos said. But that "focus on the front end should also reduce shrink," he said, pointedly. Complete article

‘That’s not my job description’: Walmart worker sparks debate after refusing to clean windows 12/13/2023

Her co-worker ended up having to clean the windows.

In a viral video, a TikToker Kisha (@kaotickisha) shares why she was fired from Walmart, causing debate among viewers.

Kisha starts the video by explaining that she was standing by the store’s entrance when the general manager told her, “’Hey, go get some spray and some paper towels and clean up the doors.’”

She recalls responding, “I’m like, ‘What do you mean? That’s not my job description.’”

She says the manager repeats himself, but she remained firm and said, “‘No, I’m not doing that.’” She says he then walked away, and in a few minutes, another sales associate brought her paper towels and spray, with the same request. She says she told the sales associate the same thing she told her manager: “’I don’t want it.

That’s not my job.’”

Her perseverance paid off. Shortly after, she shows another employee cleaning the store’s doors. Kisha narrates the scene, “She had to do inside and outside. You see her? She gets it down, baby.”

She reveals the reason why she doesn’t want to clean the doors is because she has a bad back. “A 65-inch TV fell on my back and you want me to do what,” she shared in the video’s caption. Complete article

In most cases I was lucky enough to have a receipt but what happens if you try to return an item to Walmart without a receipt? Complete article

If You Hear 'Code Brown' in a Maine Walmart, Get Out 12/28/2023

It's not a joke.

When I'm shopping, I've learned to tune out the intercom noise over the years—it's just part of the shopping ambiance, background chatter while I browse.

There are several reasons why someone might use the intercom at a store: an employee could be asking for assistance from other employees, informing shoppers about parking issues in the lot, or, most importantly, delivering vital safety alerts using codes. If you know and understand these codes, you may be able to protect yourself, your loved ones, or even fellow shoppers and strangers from potential harm. ....

Code White: Signifying an accident or incident within the store.
Code Red: Indicating a fire, often followed by a number specifying the aisle or store section.
Code Orange: Pertaining to a chemical spill, with the location provided after the color announcement.
Code Black: Occurring during dangerous and severe weather in the area.
Code Green: There's potentially an active hostage situation; call the police if you can do so safely.
Code Blue: Signals a potential bomb threat.
Code Brown: Alerting to an active shooter on the premises; head to an exit if possible, follow employee instructions, and stay calm. Complete article

BlendJet is recalling about 4.8 million of its portable blenders over laceration and fire hazards after receiving dozens of reports of injuries, federal regulators said Thursday.

BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders can overheat or catch fire, according to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and their blender blades can break off during use.

There have been 329 reports of blades breaking during use to date, the CPSC said, as well as 17 additional reports of overheating or fires that resulted in about $150,000 of property damage claims. The company has also received 49 reports of minor burn injuries and one reported laceration injury.

Regulators urged consumers to stop using the recalled blenders immediately and contact BlendJet for a free base unit replacement. To receive the replacement part, customers will need to remove and cut up the base’s rubber seal and email or upload a photo using BlendJet’s website. Complete article

Why do public officials keep bending over for Walmart? 12/28/2023

To the Editor:

I agree with the Lady Lake Planning and Zoning Board about the trees.

I was at the meeting when the request was asked for and the arborist who represented Walmart did not really know what he was talking about in regards to what they want to do about the trees.

A member of audience, who has a background in the nursery field, refuted everything the arborist said. This was not the only amendment Walmart wanted. They requested a couple of other changes also. My problem is that all these things should have been done through due diligence on Walmart’s part before they even purchased the property.

I am tired of big corporations agreeing on one thing then coming back later and wanting to change plans. They should have been aware of these problems before they purchased the property and designed the project accordingly. They think because of their size people will cave in and give them what they want. I hope in this situation this is not the case. Do we really need another Walmart? Complete article
