Walmart Crime Report April 2026

Walmart had another eleven more shootings in April of 2026, with four of those fatal killing at least five people. One of the fatal shootings was an officer involved shooting killing a woman that attempted to kidnap a child and also stabbed the child, another fatal shooting was a suicide by a suspect in a Capital theft that could have sent him to jail for a long time, another two non-fatal shooting was also by police, one ATF police and another local police with an armed stand off that ended with less-lethal rounds injuring a suspect. There was also a person arrested at a traffic stop at Walmart for a drive by shooting that happened elsewhere.

In addition to the five people killed in shootings there were two more bodies found on their property and two people killed in accidents for a total of nine dead. There were also close to if not more than a dozen more gun crimes without shots fired, including robberies, domestic threats, armed police stand offs, domestic threats with both real guns and BB guns, and one case where someone was unable to buy a gun may have prevented a gun crime.

Another police officer was caught body-slamming someone at Walmart and full details haven't been released to the public, but they say he's been relieved of duty pending investigation, and this may be only because a video went viral. Early reports of this didn't include the video, but it was posted on social media. It's unclear if he's on paid leave or not, which is often the case; most of the details aren't public but the video doesn't appear to show him resisting, he wasn't charged with anything, and most people that saw the video think the officer should be fired, and possibly charged with a crime. After a surprisingly quick investigation the police exonerated the officer saying it wasn't excessive force but few people that see this video agree, Georgia officer seen bodyslamming man at Walmart 04/28/2026.

There's also another case where police are demanding a suspected shoplifter surrender his vehicle to the police because it was used to attempt to steal $318.20 worth of merchandise. If this succeeds it will set a dangerous precedent confiscating property of poor people, sometimes acting out of desperation, but there's little or no chance this will apply to rich people who often commit much bigger crimes and are rarely prosecuted. It seems like an attempt to implement Machiavelli's recommendation to "keep the citizens poor and the state" or in the case of our current system, corporations and the wealthy rich.

There were at least a couple major brawls with a large number of people involved in fights, one with about thirty people involved, and a third fight between two dogs where five people were injured, these weren't service dogs, and may not have been allowed in the store. When one of their home deliveries went to the wrong address and the person there didn't know why he put the perishables in the refrigerator to keep them from spoiling, and the person that was supposed to get it started throwing rocks at his house without asking to resolve the problem peacefully. Walmart deliveries often turn into disasters, whether by person or drone or contractor, because they cut so many corners no matter what and these mistakes are much more common that small businesses that do a better job but may have to charge more for it. They also routinely have a large number of their own employees routinely charged with crimes, even if it's a minority of employees, including one former employee arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest, since he was banned from the store.

A customer became suspicious of "5 pound bags of potatoes" when he found some were clearly much bigger than others. He put them on the scale and found that most of them were smaller than 5 pounds, sometimes only slightly more than 3 pounds and only one that was moderately over 5 pounds, which most people rightfully called fraud.

Walmart crime has obviously been increasing for well over a decade, yet it's taking them this long to finally cut back on self-checkout, yet they refuse to admit it's cutting back for that reason, and even when they cut back on it they fight laws, mostly at the local level, to restrict or ban self-checkout, because tax payers often foot the bill for it. A few months ago I pointed out that a Judge in Michigan is going viral for repeatedly ranting about how taxpayers foot the bill for police, courts, and prisons because Walmart chooses to save money on cashiers, which means taxpayers are subsidizing their crime problems. Despite the fact that Walmart doesn't claim they're cutting back on self-checkout in Michigan because of this judge, they're cutting back more in Michigan than most other states.

In addition to the two people killed in accidents there were close to if not more than a dozen more major crashes, stolen vehicles, chases, hit and runs, some on purpose and other vehicular crimes including a truck full of explosives cited for being left unattended. There were also at least fires with at least one arson, but most if not all the other ones were probably accidents. There were also at least three knife attacks or threats including one stabbing and one robbery.

Walmart had over a dozen more recalls, which have been getting more common, but they're only reported in a low profile manner, as usual. These recalls include lead contaminated chicken, two types of pans, one for a burn hazard, another because they break while in use, car seats for children, white rice with possible foreign objects, a mini trampoline that caused a frightening injury, adjustable dumbbells which come lose while using them creating possible injuries, and more items.

One of Walmart's delivery trucks had a stowaway cat travel seventy miles before being discovered; it's unclear if he got home or a new adoption.

Firefighters also rescued over a dozen ducklings from a storm drain at Walmart and reunited them with their mother.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in April 2026. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Waltons Got Richer As Market Plunged 04/01/2026

All the richest billionaires are losing money. Bezos. Brin. Page, Zuckerberg, Ellison. Huang. However, the Waltons, children of Walmart (NYSE: WMT | WMT Price Prediction) founder Sam Walton, are getting much, much richer. As a group, the three children have seen their combined net worth grow from $27 billion this year to $430 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The reason for the run-up is simple. The stock market loves Walmart. The stock is up 11% this year. The market is down 7% (Based on its direction, it could go lower)

What’s to like about Walmart? When Americans feel pinched financially, why not go to the store with what many people think has the best prices? That is even true for groceries, which Americans continue to think are the long-term victims of inflation. CBS News reports that more middle-class people are shopping at Walmart and other discount stores. Neil Saunders, managing director and retail analyst at GlobalData, told the TV network, among middle-class people, “They don’t like the fact that more and more of their money is absorbed by essentials and the basics of life. So what has happened is they have sought out better value for money, and they’ve especially done that in grocery and household essentials.” Complete article

The Will County State's Attorney's Office wants to make the 2014 Ford Fusion of Vincent Bond a forfeited asset for the police. Here's why.

JOLIET, IL — Vincent Bond, a Joliet 59-year-old man from the 400 block of Herkimer Street, has remained in the Will County Jail since Feb. 17 and now his troubles are mounting. That day, Joliet police officer White was sent to the Walmart store on Route 59 in regard to a delayed retail theft incident. Bobby Jones Ga. Walmart was wrong move for nine-pound cocaine deal 04/15/2026

Future of Conn. Walmart checkout limits confirmed in US state after bold new move to change how we pay at retail giant 04/20/2026

WALMART shoppers will keep breezing through self-checkouts after a major crackdown on the machines was quietly killed.

Lawmakers in Connecticut have pulled the plug on a controversial bill that would have limited self-checkouts and forced stores to put more staff on tills.

The move means Walmart customers in the state will continue to use self-checkout lanes without new restrictions, despite growing pressure to rein them in.

The proposed law would have forced retailers to run one staffed checkout for every two self-service machines, and capped self-checkouts at just eight per store.

But the plan died behind closed doors on Friday after failing to gain enough support.

Sen. Gary Winfield admitted defeat, saying: “I have to give in every once in a while. It just wasn’t going to make it today.” Complete article

I worked for Walmart. Employees at big corporations aren’t to blame. 04/22/2026

To the Editor:

As a former employee of Walmart and other big companies I’d like for it to be known that it’s not always the employees fault for being stretched so thin, but still having to do so many tasks.

Apparently, as time and technology have improved, unfortunately, so has time allotted for customer service or conversational communication decreased exponentially.

To be told within an 8-hour shift that I’m not allowed more then 8.25 minutes of customer service communication is simply not acceptable as an employee or being a customer.

Walmart and Target face new self-checkout retail theft problems 04/25/2026

Self-checkout takes work once done by retail employees and makes consumers do it.

That’s something many retail chains try to sell as a positive, rather than a spending cut.

“Self-checkout technology is typically positioned by retailers as a consumer service at the front end of stores that enables associates to be deployed in other areas more valuable to shoppers,” according to RetailWire.

Retail experts disagree as to whether consumers actually want self-checkout.

“A lot of shoppers don’t like self-checkout because they see it as a job killer. Then there’s the matter of feeling resentful over doing a retailer’s work for them,” a managing partner at RSR Research posted on RetailWire. .......

“Many self-checkout users admit to theft, whether intentionally or unintentionally. 27% have purposefully taken an item without scanning — a massive 12 percentage point increase from 15% in 2023. Additionally, 36% of users admit they’ve accidentally left with an unscanned item, including 22% in the past year. 61% who’ve accidentally taken something say they kept it the last time,” LendingTree reported. Why Walmart is rolling out AI to 2M employees 04/23/2026

The retailer plans to train all employees on agentic AI tools in pursuit of customer experience improvements, Chief People Officer Donna Morris said.

Over the next few years, Walmart is aiming to equip each of its 2.1 million employees — from its tech team to its signature in-store greeters — with some level of AI skills, EVP and Chief People Officer Donna Morris said at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech AI summit Tuesday.

Morris described the business as “people-led, tech powered,” saying the company has been experimenting with AI and honing a strategy since the rise of generative AI in the fall of 2022.

By the following year, Walmart had built an internal platform for associates to experiment with AI. The company has since streamlined its portfolio, standing up four different agent platforms with a mix of custom-built and external large language models. The company has a more than 35,000 person tech team, but AI touches every part of the organization, Morris said. Complete article

Farm Bureau asks court to reject Wal-Mart's $4.7M coverage demand 04/24/2026

Carrier claims the retailer stipulated its own employee caused the accident - then sent the bill.

Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Michigan is asking a federal judge to let it walk away from a multimillion-dollar tab Wal-Mart wants it to pick up - after Wal-Mart, by Farm Bureau's account, already stipulated that its own employee caused the accident.

The declaratory relief action was filed on April 23, 2026 in the US District Court for the Western District of Michigan. It is the opening move in a dispute that will be familiar, and probably uncomfortable, to anyone who writes or handles vendor additional insured coverage.

The story, as Farm Bureau tells it, starts on January 16, 2023, at a Wal-Mart Superstore in Amite, Louisiana. A shipment of plants from Farm Bureau's insured, Neal Mast and Son Greenhouses, was being unloaded when a rack allegedly fell on a man named Jeffrey Lewis. The hi/lo - a forklift - was being operated by a Wal-Mart employee, Brian Matherne. Lewis sued Wal-Mart, the greenhouse, Matherne, and Peak Transportation. Complete article

Maryland is moving to ban companies like Walmart and Kroger from ‘surveillance pricing’ — what it is and how to avoid it 04/25/2026

Whether it's a digital price tag on a store shelf that can be altered at the press of a button (1) or an online price point that fluctuates based on an algorithmic analysis of a consumer's digital footprint, the strategy of amending product costs in real-time is on the rise (2).

Retailers are taking advantage of AI and their access to consumer data to customize prices based not just on supply and demand (which is considered "dynamic pricing" (3)), but also on a shopper's location, search history, personal details, past buying habits and more (the more nefarious "surveillance pricing" or "price discrimination" (4), which is itself is a type of dynamic pricing). In response to these trends, Maryland is about to become the first state to ban the practice in the grocery sector.

The Protection From Predatory Pricing Act (5), which passed in the state legislature earlier in April, takes aim at companies that Governor Wes Moore says (6) are using "new technologies to drive up the bill for working families." It's a practice his leadership — and authorities like the Federal Trade Commission — believe to be invasive, exploitative and anti-competitive (7). Complete article

Democrats’ latest critique of Walmart is wrong — and dangerous 04/27/2026 Rich people rig the economy and use a cut of the loot to pay for propaganda like this.

No, Medicaid is not “corporate welfare.”

For years, many Democrats have lamented the fact that some workers at highly profitable corporations — from Amazon to Walmart to McDonald’s — receive Medicaid benefits.

Their reasoning isn’t hard to understand: To be eligible for safety net programs, one must have a low household income. And why should anyone working at a highly profitable enterprise earn a low income? Surely, Walmart can afford to provide its cashiers with a living wage and health care benefits. By not doing so, the Walton family is “living off corporate welfare from the federal government,” as Sen. Bernie Sanders put it in 2020.

This argument is intuitive. But it is also incorrect — and utterly antithetical to the left’s broader vision for social welfare.

Unfortunately, Democrats are on the cusp of turning their party’s incoherent conception of “corporate welfare” into actual tax policy. In New Jersey and Colorado, lawmakers are currently pushing to impose a fine on companies for every Medicaid recipient they keep on their payrolls, in order to shore up funding for that program. As Republican Medicaid cuts weigh on state budgets, others could be tempted to follow their lead. Complete article

Dog Abandoned at Walmart With All His Toys Just Wants a Second Chance 04/28/2026

It does not take much to be kind to animals, and what you get in return is unlimited bouts of love. But a heartbreaking Instagram video from @barknwalk_ shows an abandoned dog left outside a Walmart with a box full of toys, and it has struck a nerve online for how gently he seemed to handle it all. He just wanted another chance at life — thanks to a kind adopter, he has one.

Dog rescued from Walmart with his toy is nothing but a ‘scared’ good boy

The video tells the story of a dog who was abandoned outside Walmart with his toys and stayed there for three days before animal control arrived. The video says that the German Shepherd was “calm, sweet and docile.”

But once he ended up in the shelter, the picture changed, as the shelter labeled him “rescue only” and listed the dog for euthanasia, “simply because he’s scared.” The creator resisted the idea that fear should define him. They wrote, “The way a dog acts in a shelter is usually not representative of their true personality. It’s a loud, scary place,” and that is often true. ......

The good news is that the story did not end there. In an update in the comments, @barknwalk_ shared, “UPDATE: Great news!!! Foster-to-adopt has agreed to take him. Rescue has agreed to pull him!!!” A later update added, “We have secured a foster-to-adopt and a rescue! I found a transport company, now we just need to raise the funds.” Complete article

One product affected by the recall is Wiifo Children’s Tower Stools, which were sold on Amazon between June 2022 and March 2026. About 9,700 units were recalled, with more than 22 incidents of stools collapsing reported, which resulted in six injuries, such as contusions and scrapes, the CPSC said. Complete article

The real reason Walmart, Target and Costco are axing more self-checkouts — as states and NYC push limits 04/30/2026

Some major retailers are doing away with self-checkouts as legislators fight for stricter regulations on self-checkout systems.

Among those brands, Walmart is eliminating self-checkout machines as the retail giant continues their experiment with automation.

The retailer has been slowly removing their machines from its stores to go old school and bring back traditional cashier lanes. The latest location to dump its self-checkout was in South Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

A company spokesperson insisted to the outlet that the shift is about customer service, presenting it as a way to shorten lines and increase efficiency. .......

However, self-checkout kiosks are also extremely vulnerable to theft, and experts say the rise in shoplifting is the real reason they’re being cut. Complete article

Walmart faces class action over non-plant additives in 'plant-based' milk 04/28/2026

AA new class action lawsuit claims Walmart misled consumers by labeling its Bettergoods brand almond, oat and soy milk as “Plant-Based” despite the products containing ingredients that do not come from plants.

Plaintiff Christina Bauer filed the class action complaint against Walmart and Walmart Apollo on April 8 in Florida federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the class action lawsuit, Walmart prominently marketed its Bettergoods milk products as “plant-based,” leading consumers to believe the products contained only plant-derived ingredients.
