Walmart Crime Report June 2023

Walmart had at least another dozen shootings in June of 2023, with only one of them fatal and that was a suspect with a knife killed by police. There were two other fatal shootings off property that either resulted in a lock down at Walmart, since it was in the businesses next to Walmart, or a murder suspect went to Walmart to confess murdering his girlfriend; and there was a lawsuit resolved from a previous fatal shooting in February 2022 that found Walmart negligent. Four of the shootings last month happened on the same day, which has only happened one or two times before, although there have been at least half a dozen days with three shootings on the same day. Only two additional injuries resulted from these shootings, which is lower than usual, and one of them is serious, but probably not fatal.

In addition to the death from a shooting there was another one from an accident and four bodies found in their parking lot, which is also lower than usual for a total of six dead. Walmart also had close to a dozen, if not more than a dozen additional gun crimes on their premises, including several robberies, domestic arguments, carjackings, an attempt to grab a detectives gun and kill him, and at least two standoffs for extended times, one which was a false alarm by someone with just a BB-gun, the other a man armed with a real gun involved in several crimes that began elsewhere.

It is now routine for Walmart workers or innocent suspects of shoplifting to go online to warn people about how they can catch you stealing, how they falsely accuse many people of theft or many other problems related to self-checkout, yet there's little discussion about the fact that this problem was created by their obsession with eliminating cashiers, and that it's putting people at risk due to increased violence that comes with increased crime and false accusations. A court has also ruled that Walmart is not liable for detaining an innocent paying customer for refusing to show his receipt. The constitutional right that we're innocent until proven guilty no longer applies; they now routinely assume we're all guilty, yet there's little or no concern about wage theft, deceptive advertising or many other fraudulent business practices committed by the rich against the working class!

Two police officers were investigated for tackling a customer who had a receipt for a five dollar pizza and told them so, but kept going, raising a growing number of concerns that police are out of control for the most petty things, especially if it's a minority. In this case they were relieved of duty, but it's just one of many examples, and there's little or no chance they'll be charged with assault, which is what they did. There are also at least two examples where customers have accused Walmart workers of scamming them or stealing "reward points." Their anti-theft practices are angering many more customers for a variety of reasons, in some cases they refuse to buy stuff, which may be the only way to get them to address legitimate concerns, at least until we reform our government and force them to give fair treatment to workers or customers over campaign donors, who currently appear above the law.

Another ex District Attorney was arrested for stealing at Walmart. Apparently wealthy people or cops can't resist the urge to steal by traditional ways, in addition to the fraud they often commit through white collar crimes, although this is much more common for cops than DAs or politicians. Cops or politicians are much more likely to be arrested for stealing from wealthy corporations than for stealing from the public, or in the case of cops, even beating or killing members of the public. And there was also a creative shoplifter who was allowed to use the bathroom before she was handcuffed, and shortly after that another customer reported a note on the stall saying “There is a bomb in the store. I’m being kidnapped.”

In addition to the accident that killed one man there were also close to a dozen more major accidents chases, stolen cars, or other automobile crimes. There were also over three fires at Walmarts, all of which were arson, one of them involved one arsonists who spray painted merchandise and committed arson another one set multiple fires in the same store. There were also at least four knife attacks including at least two resulting in stabbings, which were not fatal.

Walmart had many more assaults, sexual attacks, peeping Tom's recording women or children, attempted kidnappings drug busts, domestic fights, impersonating of police, and many other crimes.

Walmart also had at least five more recalls last month, including a baby accessory that was linked to two deaths caused by suffocation, which wasn't included in the deaths mentioned above. Other recalls include fruit that might contain hepatitis A, other fruits that might contain listeria, toys that might cause impalement, and Salsa Pies and Sausages all recalled for one reason or another. Someone also did a study on products that say they may contain traces of fish or many other allergens, and found that it was required by law, just in case someone allergic to these items might buy it. But the fact that they do this so often strongly implies they don't know what's going into their food!

There are growing numbers of people going on social media to warn customers to check their receipts, with good reason, many of them are being over charged, and there are also many people finding that they're not getting what the expected, including many people getting wrong items, often useless in packages, and last month one person who complained for only getting 17 bags of chips in a package that should have had 18, as a matter of principle, even though this wasn't as bad as some other stories. Their drivers are also expressing outrage about multiple stories where they can't make nearly as much money as they were led to believe, including a lot protesting that they have to compete with bots to get orders. Other drivers have previously claimed they couldn't even make minimum wage when things go wrong, as they often do. This can't be good for customers, and of course there are plenty of complaints from them.

Their share holders voted easily to support directors, but voted down efforts to address their crime problems and other social issues, which is routine, since the wealthiest ones have the most votes and they only care about profits not safety of workers, customers, or any other social issues.

One Walmart worker went viral in a Social Media post asking people not to leave full carts abandoned in the store, especially if they have refrigerated perishables in them; a Walmart customer responded with another viral post complaining that they often don't have enough cashiers, and sometimes there aren't enough self-checkouts working, so out of frustration, she abandoned her full cart. Other customers were outraged by poor quality merchandise for online orders, and other workers expressed outrage because they didn't provide adequate training on their first day, and that the person training her wasn't even trained herself.

Have you ever seen anyone eating while shopping and wondered if you would report them? One Op-ed reporter did, and wrote about it instead, saying that technically it might be legal if they paid for it on their way out, but it virtually never happens that way.

When rich people steal from working class people or rig the economy in their own favor the police never help the working class; why would anyone care about reporting poor people if they steal from the rich?

Have you ever seen Walmart put a black person in a cage as a fund raiser claiming they wanted to "Raise Bail?" Does this happen in stores outside of Rhode Island?

How many Spark delivery workers make orders so they can fill them themselves? How could anyone thing they were pulling a fast one by doing this, or saving money and bragging about it?

How many Spark delivery workers get orders to drive 2,000 miles for a $60 order? would they be fired if they refuse?

Have you ever wondered how it would affect your future as a police officer, assuming you want to become one, if you got caught stealing at Walmart? One Florida man is in that position, and as past incidents show he wouldn't be hired since police who have been caught in the past are routinely fired quickly, but police who kill poor people, especially minorities often get to keep their jobs. As long as your victims are poor, not rich you can be a cop.

How often do you think Walmart racially profile famous mixed martial artists? When they do the internet makes it go viral.

Have you ever wonders if the boycotts over Bud Light ads ever made them free?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in June 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart not liable for detaining customer who refused to show receipts, appeals court agrees 06/01/2023

The Court of Appeals concluded William Montgomery knew he could avoid detention by showing his receipt, but chose not to.

A man who repeatedly attempted to walk out of Walmart stores without showing his receipts, then sued the company when employees detained him on suspicion of shoplifting, cannot hold Walmart liable for false imprisonment, Colorado's second-highest court ruled on Thursday.

William Montgomery has filed a deluge of lawsuits in state and federal court alleging the same basic pattern. Montgomery pays for items at Denver-area Walmart stores, walks out carrying the merchandise and declines to provide his receipt when asked. Employees and law enforcement then detain, question and sometimes arrest him.

In siding with Walmart last year in five combined lawsuits, an Arapahoe County judge noted Montgomery had stated he "came to the store and planned on suing" in what Montgomery called "stings." .....

Grove also referenced the "shopkeepers' privilege," a provision in Colorado law that shields store owners and employees from liability if they have reasonable grounds to detain and question people they suspect of shoplifting. The state Supreme Court has interpreted the law to afford shopkeepers protection even if the detained customer is not ultimately guilty of theft. Complete article

CHECK IT OUT I work security at Walmart – there’s a dead giveaway when someone is stealing from self-checkout 06/01/2023

A WALMART security guard has shared a dead giveaway to know whether someone is stealing from self-checkout.

Body cam footage from an incident at a Walmart store revealed what the officer saw that alerted him to two alleged thieves.

The video footage from September 2022 in New Mexico was shared on YouTube.

A man had allegedly taken two duffle bags from a section of the store and filled them with other items.

When he and his alleged accomplice got to the self-checkout kiosk, the only item they swiped was a Halloween costume.

This appeared to arouse further suspicion from the security worker who had already positioned himself at the exit after noticing the large duffle bags. Complete article

‘We eventually gave up and left’: Walmart shopper says they couldn’t buy $4 battery locked in case because worker never came after they pushed call button 06/01/2023

'I'm an example of the person that leaves as soon as I realize it's in a case.'

Recently, numerous chains have announced efforts to combat shoplifting. For example, Target recently told investors that the chain expects heavy losses from “theft and organized crime.” Walgreens made similar claims a few years ago, alleging it closed several stores due to the prevalence of theft.

Many of these claims aren’t supported by data, and Walgreens CFO James Kehoe later admitted that it was possible that the brand “cried too much last year” about its alleged shoplifting issues.

Regardless, stores are responding to apparent shoplifting fears by complicating the buying process.

For example, users online have reported that some Target locations are locking certain items up behind glass. Others have noted Target’s recent implementation of “anti-theft” carts in a few locations:

carts that lock up once they hit a certain radius outside the store. Walmart has also hopped on this trend, with some stores sectioning off their cosmetics areas from the rest of the store.

While this may be effective in reducing shoplifters, some claim it creates an unpleasant experience for shoppers. For example, a user on TikTok recently noted that buying cosmetics, a video game, and groceries from Walmart now requires 3 different check-out procedures and transactions.

TikTok user Frönk (@iceage3isadocum) shared a similar experience in a video with over 36,000 views.

“I went to a Walmart the other day that had taken the loss prevention thing to such a higher level than I had ever seen,” the TikToker recalls. Complete article

Walmart is raising wages for pharmacists, opticians in healthcare push 06/01/2023

BENTONVILLE, Ark., May 31 (Reuters) - Walmart is raising wages for thousands of U.S. pharmacists and opticians, the retailer said on Wednesday, part of its broader plan to expand primary care services across the country.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain said about 3,700 pharmacists would get a bump in pay starting on Wednesday, bringing their total annual average pay to more than $140,000, excluding bonuses and incentives. More than 4,000 opticians will also receive fatter paychecks, with their average hourly pay rising to more than $22.50 with this investment, Walmart executives wrote in a blog post.

The company declined to provide details on their wage rates last year or how it will select the employees for the hikes.

Salary rates vary based on location and role, so not all pharmacists and opticians will earn the average annual or hourly salary, Walmart spokesperson Nick DeMoss said. Complete article

Camillus, N.Y. — A 44-year-old man was arrested Friday and charged with pointing what looked like a gun at a Walmart employee this week.

Adam Schadler was charged with second-degree menacing, third-degree reckless assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Camillus Police Department.

Police this week were searching for a man seen getting irate while using an ATM machine at the Camillus Walmart, 5399 W. Genesee St., before pointing what looked like a handgun at a loss prevention officer around 5 p.m. Monday.

The man was seen beating on the machine and was asked to stop by the employee, witnesses said. As the man left, he hit doors and was asked again to stop.

That’s when he pointed what was later determined to be an airsoft gun, police said. Complete article

‘It’s the principle’: Viewers defend Walmart customer for complaining about getting only 17 bags of chips in an 18-pack 06/03/2023

A TikToker named Jai (@jai_tha_bae) has a little set-up she uses to hang up single-serving bags of chips she gets for her family to enjoy. However, one day, after hanging up the chips she purchased from Walmart, she says she noticed that there was a bag missing from the new pack—she only received 17 instead of 18.

In the clip, Jai says a family member criticized her for wanting to make a stink about missing a single bag of chips, stating that it wasn’t worth the time to bring up the issue to Walmart. However, the mom disagreed. Complete article

Walmart shareholders approve directors, discuss worker safety amid rising gun violence 06/01/2023

Wednesday’s (May 31) annual business meeting for Walmart Inc. shareholders went as expected. The meeting was held virtually and lasted about an hour, and included a question-and-answer session with shareholders.

Having gone public in 1970, the first meeting of shareholders took place in Bentonville, with 16 attending the public offering 53 years ago. Wednesday’s meeting was called to order by board chairman Greg Penner at 10:32 a.m.

Shareholders had positive news to celebrate. For fiscal 2023, Walmart reported record revenue of $611.3 billion, up 6.7% year over year. Net income was $11.68 billion, down 14.6% from the prior record pandemic year. But stronger than expected first-quarter results reported in early May included Walmart upgrading its earnings guidance for fiscal 2024 that will end Feb. 1, 2024. The retail giant said it expects net sales growth of 3.5% this year with adjusted earnings per share between $6.10 to $6.20, better than previous $5.99 per share expectations from analysts. .....

There were nine proposals brought by shareholders that were not approved. Walmart advised shareholders in the proxy filing to vote against outside proposals. The proposals dealt with more equity in pay across the company, more disclosure into company policies and procedures on reporting human rights issues, discrimination in hiring and firing based on race and sex, changing bylaws on how directors are chosen, and more clarity on how Walmart plans to protect privacy on reproductive health choices of customers now that abortion has been criminalized in many states.

Shareholders also asked Walmart to provide updates on workplace safety policies and procedures and human rights violations in China. Also, there was a floor proposal asking the retailer to report funding to any political action committees that incited the Jan. 6, 2021, violence in Washington, D.C. ....

In the question-and-answer session, Walmart executives were again asked about protecting workers against gun violence in its U.S. stores. The execs said protecting workers and customers is a top priority. Given the rise in gun violence, McMillon said the company is seeking additional third-party input to address store safety.

A study by Guns Down America between Jan. 1, 2020, and Nov. 22, 2022, identified 363 shootings at Walmart stores, resulting in 112 deaths. The study found 536 shooting incidents resulting in 186 deaths in the nation’s 12 largest grocery chains. Kroger followed Walmart with 45 gun incidents resulting in 20 deaths. Complete article

Multiple police responses have been needed at the two Walmart locations in Federal Way. One incident was reported as an aggravated assault with a knife that occurred at the store on the 1900 block of S 314th Street on May 20.

Another report of a stolen vehicle came from the parking lot of the Walmart location on the 3400 block of 16th Avenue S. In total, five reported violent incidents occurred on the two Walmart properties in May.

Grocery store parking lots have been the source of multiple incidents in the south Sound, and one Federal Way resident, Priscilla Parker, is asking for safety for herself and fellow grocery store shoppers in the region.

“Enough is enough. Walmart owns that property, and in my feeling, they owe it to their customers to keep their customers safe while they’re shopping,” Parker told The Jason Rantz Show on AM 770 KTTH. Complete article

BABY WARNING Popular baby accessory sold at Walmart and Target recalled after it’s linked to two deaths and ‘risk of suffocation’ 06/07/2023

A BABY accessory sold at popular stores like Walmart and Target has been recalled after being linked to at least 10 deaths.

The recall applies to three items from The Boppy Company, located in Golden, Colorado.

If customers purchased either the Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, or the Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers, they should stop using the products immediately.

The Newborn Loungers were originally recalled in September 2021 due to the risk infants would suffocate if they rolled, moved, or were placed on the lounger in a position that makes breathing difficult.

There were also risks that infants could suffocate if rolled off the lounger onto another surface, including pillows.

In 2021, the product was recalled after eight babies died between December 2015 to June 2020.

All had died while placed in the lounger, but since then, even more deaths have occurred.

Since the 2021 recall, two more babies died, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Complete article

Walgreens Has Extreme Answer for Walmart, Target's Theft Problem 06/07/2023

You can't shoplift from Amazon because the consumer has no access to the company's merchandise. The retail giant takes orders digitally, picks and packages those items, and then ships them to customers.

Someone might steal your package from your door, but no regular consumer can walk through an Amazon (AMZN) - Get Free Report warehouse and steal a bunch of merchandise. Walmart and Target (TGT) - Get Free Report don't have the same luxury. Both retailers have been struggling with rising theft from their stores.

Target CEO Brian Cornell talked about theft during his chain's first-quarter earnings call.

"Beyond macroeconomic challenges, we continue to contend with significant headwinds caused by inventory shrink, building on a worsening trend that emerged last year," he said. "While shrink can be driven by multiple factors, theft, and organized retail crime are increasingly urgent issues impacting the team and our guests and other retailers. The problem affects all of us, limiting product availability, creating a less convenient shopping experience, and putting our team and guests in harm's way."

Cornell, who noted that "violent incidents are increasing at our stores and across the entire retail industry," shared some of his company's efforts to solve the problem. ....

Walgreens (WBA) - Get Free Report has launched a prototype store that changes the shopping experience in order to eliminate theft. This new store has only two aisles of "essentials" that shoppers can put into their carts, according to a report from CWB Chicago.

All the other merchandise in the store is locked up with customers using kiosks to order what they need. Walgreens has framed this via signs encouraging people to let the store's employees shop for them. In addition, shelves in the store are only about five feet high, making it easier for customers to see the merchandise (and easier for store employees to keep tabs on the customers. ‘Girly I do not have the key. Press the damn button’: Walmart picker complains about customers who ask her to unlock the cologne 06/06/2023

A Walmart picker’s comedic video about dealing with customers who ask her to unlock the cologne case has gone viral on TikTok, sparking discussion in the comments section.

TikToker Kaylei (@_kaylei.jade) posted the video on May 3. It has accumulated over 107,800 views since.

Kaylei sets the scene of her video with overlay text that reads, “when someone asks if you can unlock the cologne case on a general walk.”

She accompanies the text by lip-syncing the viral sound bite, “Okay, Well, That’s Interesting. You Know Why? Why? Because” before running away while pushing a large cart stacked with crates.

In the comments section, many pickers agreed with the TikToker and shared their own experiences.

“Lmao i hate general walks everyone and they mama wanna know where everything is like damn i just wanna pick,” one viewer wrote.

“And they be like ‘well can you call someone’ like bro i just wanna pick in peace and now i have to look for someone and my pick rate goes down,” a second added. Complete article

Minnesota alleges Reynolds, Walmart falsely advertised waste bags as recyclable 06/06/2023

Minnesota has become the second state to sue Reynolds Consumer Products and the first to sue Walmart for allegedly falsely advertising that some of their waste bags are recyclable.

The state said in a lawsuit announced Tuesday that Hefty brand recycling bags and Walmart's Great Value brand recycling bags — both made of low-density polyethylene — can't be recycled at any facility in Minnesota.

As a result, the suit said, recyclable items placed in the bags would wind up as trash in landfills, waterways or incinerators because opening the bags and sorting through their contents would be costly and potentially risky for recycling workers.

State Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the lawsuit — charging the companies with consumer fraud, deceptive trade practices, false advertising and deceptive environmental marketing claims — at nonprofit Eureka Recycling in northeast Minneapolis. Complete article

Workers built a Walmart and discovered a Toltec treasure hidden for centuries 06/07/2023

Archaeological vestiges found when building Walmart store

Mexico is a country full of culture and mysteries, there are endless stories to be known, like on this occasion, when some workers, while building a store for the American Walmart chain, discovered a Toltec treasure hidden for centuries.

Through the social network of Facebook, the municipal president of Tula, shared a series of photographs, in which it is observed that construction employees stopped doing the work of the new Walmart branch, because they located the archaeological remains .

It was on June 2, when Hernández Badillo announced that: “This afternoon in the company of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, I had the honor of visiting the site where the Walmart will be built in Tula and I was amazed.”

Given that before the finding, archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) were present, who work to identify the importance of the finding. Complete article

Meet your next coworker: Walmart's Alphabot 06/04/2023

The company is leveraging a proprietary storage and retrieval system in its Arkansas-based Market Fulfillment Center that helps Walmart associates fill online grocery pickup and delivery orders faster than before.

The company's first Market Fulfillment Center, located in Bentonville, is part of the company's ongoing efforts to use its stores as fulfillment centers so that it can make the shopping experience more efficient for employees and customers. Complete article

After fight over property taxes on Houghton Mich. store, Walmart gets what it asked for 06/06/2023

HOUGHTON, MI – Houghton brought together a group of community leaders in late February to make sure they understood a looming threat to the city’s finances: Walmart was asking the Michigan Tax Tribunal to grant it a sharp reduction in the property tax assessments on its store off of M-26.

If the big box retailer got what it was asking for, it wouldn’t just mean less tax money going forward, but as much as $1.2 million in retroactive payments from the city, from the local schools and the library, from veteran and senior service agencies.

But that dispute is partly settled, and Walmart is getting more than what it originally asked for.

A Walmart subsidiary first brought the case of the Houghton store to the Michigan Tax Tribunal in 2018. The tribunal is the court that hears tax appeals from across the state. The retailer asked that the taxable value on the Houghton store be reduced from slightly less than $4.7 million to just under $4 million.

A settlement approved by the tribunal last week would make it less than $2.4 million for the 2018 tax year and only slightly higher for 2019 and 2020. Another tax dispute over the same store filed in 2021 is ongoing.

The settlement is particularly remarkable because the retailer signed a development agreement with the city of Houghton in 2004 that laid out conditions for the retail giant to expand the store.

The city agreed to give Walmart $300,000 to offset the costs of wetland mitigation work and agree to provide long-term environmental monitoring of the surrounding wetlands and drain systems.

In return, Walmart agreed to a $1.95 million increase in the taxable value of the property, raising its overall taxable value to nearly $4.5 million when the expansion was completed in 2005. Complete article

GOTCHA! Boy, 15, Robbed Of Bicycle At Knifepoint Outside Walmart, Garfield NJ PD Stings Suspect 06/07/2023

Garfield police pulled a clever sting to capture a Dominican national who they said pulled a knife on a 15-year-old boy and robbed him of a bicycle that the youngster had arranged to sell him through Facebook.

Cristopher Rosario, 18, of Bloomfield, met the boy in the parking lot of the Walmart on Passaic Street, then threatened him with a silver knife before fleeing on the bicycle towards Passaic shortly after 8:30 p.m. last Thursday, June 1, Capt. Mario Pozo said.

The youngster had gone there after Rosario agreed on Facebook Marketplace to buy the bike for $850, the captain said.

Garfield detectives interviewed the victim, identified Rosario as their suspect, then set up an undercover sting.

Rosario agreed to a transaction with possibly another potential victim in Passaic on Wednesday, June 7, Pozo said.

He was met instead by Garfield Detective Sgt. Marc Amos, Detective Sebastian Tyburski, Detective Erik Dudek and Officer Jonathan Librizzi, who were assisted by their Passaic colleagues, the captain said. Complete article

Ex-Alabama DA arrested for allegedly shoplifting from Walmart 06/07/2023

A former north Alabama district attorney convicted of civil rights violations more than 15 years ago for sexually fondling male defendants is now facing misdemeanor charges after authorities claim he shoplifted from Walmart.

John Pilati allegedly swiped items worth $500 or less from the Walmart in Russellville, leading to his arrest Tuesday afternoon on shoplifting charges, police told WAFF.

Pilati was convicted in 2007 and sentenced in 2008 to 42 months in prison for five civil rights violations that stemmed from his fondling defendants after making them strip for searches or to take urine tests years earlier. The victims were between the ages of 17-20.

Pilati was pardoned in 2010 and 2015, but the state Bureau of Pardons and Paroles reversed the decisions, which meant the former district attorney was put back on the state’s sex offender registry. Complete article

‘They stand around watching self-checkout’: Walmart worker mocks managers who ‘just watch’ as cashiers ‘fight for their lives’ 06/07/2023

A Walmart worker depicted a core difference between cashiers in the trenches and the managers who oversee them in a viral video that got people talking.

The video examining the divide came from creator Putadinerrro (@putadinerrro and has since attracted more than 66,000 views since it went up on March 19.

It shows two sides of the coin — the first being, as the creator put it, “Cashiers who fight for their lives w the line,” playacting as a harried employee with music to match.

Then, halfway through the eight-second video, it changes to more relaxed music and the creator is seen with an arguably calmer demeanor. The on-screen caption now reads, “Managers/team leads just watching.”

A number of viewers who happened to have experience as Walmart cashiers could relate and they took to the comments to report seeing similar situations in their own stores.

“Can confirm they do this at every store,” one wrote. “I like to talk shi about them to the customers just loud enough for them to hear it.”

Another declared, “This is the problem with [team] leads,” specifying, “they stand around, make jokes of the day or [be on] their phone but when others does it they get call out.”

Someone else couldn’t understand why Walmart managers don’t just help their cashiers. “Literally like… why not help cashier? Lol,” they wondered. Complete article

‘I don’t care but i see you!!’: Walmart worker catches customer stuffing everything in a bucket and only scanning bucket at self-checkout 06/08/2023

TikToker Justin (@justinn_08) posted store surveillance footage of a woman stuffing items in a bucket and only scanning the bucket at Walmart’s self-checkout.

As the worker proves, no matter how hard someone tries to sneak an item from a store, a store employee has probably seen them. But while cashiers and floor workers are not trained to handle theft and won’t intervene, they may poke fun at a thief’s expense.

Justin’s 12-second clip is from a camera angled directly above a self-checkout register, giving viewers a bird’s-eye perspective of what’s happening. The recording shows a woman with a cart full of groceries, ringing herself up at self-checkout.

She begins by swiping a single item and placing it in a bag already full of groceries. Then the Walmart customer reaches over and grabs a bright blue bucket that has a few small items in it. The woman scans the bucket and places it with the other checked out bags, failing to scan the other individual items inside the bucket. .....

Justin exemplified this in his video’s caption. He directed it to the Walmart customer with the blue bucket, saying, “I can see you and i dont care but i see you!!” His response perfectly encapsulates how little workers care and how hard it really is to remain undetected when stealing at big box stores. ‘I either don’t buy it or I yank the loop off’: Walmart worker locks up e.l.f. items in beauty section 06/11/2023

Recently, many retailers have been coming under fire for locking up their products behind glass.

While this practice may deter shoplifters, it can also create an unpleasant experience for shoppers. Earlier this year, a Walmart customer sparked discussion after claiming that a single shopping trip required her to do three different transactions. Another Walmart customer alleged that they waited 10 minutes for an attendant to unlock a case so they could buy a $4 battery before eventually leaving the store.

Why Walmart, Costco, and Sam's Club workers check your receipts — and you should comply 06/10/2023

If you've ever shopped at Walmart or Costco, you've probably been asked to show your receipt at the door.

Some customers have complained about this practice on social media. Videos posted to TikTok show people flouting receipt requests at store exits, and filming confrontations over their refusals to comply.

Shoppers are not legally required to show receipts at any retailer. But refusing to show your receipt could give a store probable cause to detain you, as my colleague Gloria Dawson has reported. One customer sued Walmart after repeatedly refusing to show receipts for his purchases at Denver-area Walmart stores, leading workers to detain him. (Walmart was recently found not liable for false imprisonment of the customer).

So why would any store check receipts if it causes so much tension? Complete article

Walmart: Why Is an 80-Year-Old Man Sweeping the Parking Lot? 06/12/2023

At a Walmart, an 80-year-old man was sweeping the parking lot, picking up stuff like partially smoked cigarettes. The lot was at least three acres. He had a broom and a dustpan—the process bordered on cruelty. Like others, his age, the man likely needs supplemental income. He also needs an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner. Walmart wonders why it has a poor reputation for taking care of workers—this man’s example is in plain sight. (These companies have the worst reputations.)

Walmart pays its workers $14 an hour for those at the lowest level. This translates into $28,000 a year for full-time workers. Many of these people do not work full-time. The poverty level a family of four is $26,500. Walmart must know this fact, but it has decided to ignore it.

A look at Walmart’s financials shows how rich the company is, which means it can pay better than its minimum wage. In its most recently reported quarter, Walmart’s global revenue was $152 billion, with an operating income of over $6 billion. Its U.S. operations had revenue of $104 billion with an operating income of $5 billion.

"Always Check Your Receipts" — Woman Charged Extra $36 at Walmart for Item She Didn't Buy 06/07/2023

NEW FEE Walmart customers fume over new automatic surcharge which they have branded a ‘tax’ on shoppers 06/11/2023

A NEW automatic surcharge has been issued by Walmart, and some customers claim is a tax on shoppers.

The fee is put in place with supposed good intentions, as the retail giant allegedly wanted to entice customers to recycle and protect the environment.

Costing around five to 10 cents, the surcharge is reportedly added to the purchase of bottled drinks, specifically those in plastic packaging, per Kitchn.

However, the effort to reduce plastic pollution also offers customers a chance to get their money back.

If Walmart shoppers who purchase the bottled drinks later return the empties to a location that sells the exact same brand, they can be reimbursed.

The company's decision to assess the fee came as many state governments have placed a container deposit law, or so called bottle bill, on drinks to reduce beverage waste. Complete article

Update: Officials weigh in on Wal-Mart automation investment 06/06/2023

CULLMAN, Ala. – As The Tribune previously reported, the Cullman City Council on Monday night approved a $20 million tax abatement for Wal-Mart, which is planning a $350 million capital investment in the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in south Cullman. According to Cullman Economic Development Agency Director Dale Greer, Wal-Mart plans to automate its distribution center over the next several years. On Tuesday, he and other officials offered more comments on the matter.

“$350 million is the largest single capital investment in our history,” Greer stated. “I think this solidifies Wal-Mart’s future here for the foreseeable future. That’s a plus; today they employ 1,300 folks.”

Every city and county in Alabama is allowed to abate the non-education portion of property tax as an incentive for new industry and to encourage existing industry to expand, said Greer.

“With this investment, it will create $20 million in educational taxes,” said Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs, who explained that amount will be divided by the State, County and City. “The good thing about this automation project is that it’s reaffirming Wal-Mart’s relationship with the city of Cullman.” Complete article

Officers were called to the Walmart on Mahoning Avenue just after 8:30 p.m. Friday on reports that a man smacked a woman in the parking lot. An officer attempted to stop the suspect, Hubbert, as he was leaving in a vehicle, according to the report.

Police said Hubbert refused to stop, however, ignoring the lights and sirens on the police car and led officers on a pursuit, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour.

According to the police report, officers stopped the pursuit because Hubbert was driving in the center lane to pass vehicles in a high-traffic area. After stopping the chase, however, the vehicle Hubbert was driving was hit by another car after Hubbert drove through a red light, the report stated. Complete article

Grandma Says Man Tried Luring Preschooler With $40 At Gillette Wyoming Walmart 06/13/2023

A man tried bribing a preschool-aged boy to go away with him at a Walmart in Gillette, the boy’s grandmother told police.

The grandmother, 72, called the Gillette Police Department on Friday evening to report that a man who looked about 60 years old gave her grandson, a 4-year-old boy, $40 at the Walmart store in Gillette moments earlier.

The grandson told his grandmother what had happened, Brent Wasson, deputy chief of the Gillette Police Department, told Cowboy State Daily on Tuesday morning.

“The grandson told her that (the man) wanted him to go with him,” Wasson recounted.

The boy still had the $40 after the man left his side. Complete article

‘Basically worked 4 hours for free’: Walmart worker eats Whataburger on lunch break, says cost of meal is equivalent to 4 hours of work 06/12/2023

A Walmart worker is illustrating the discrepancy between the cost of living and pay for many retail workers. He said he spent four hours’ worth of his day’s pay on food to eat during his breaks.

“POV: You spent $13 on your break and $20 on your lunch break so you basically worked 4 hours for free,” the on-screen text reads as popular TikToker Ray (@.ray_mtz03) sits in his car and enjoys a burger, fries, and shake from Whataburger.

His video was viewed 37,500 times since it was posted on Sunday. The realization made him want to “fast” during his work shifts, he revealed in the caption.

Sadly enough, that’s the reality for some. One user shared they try not to eat during their nine-hour shifts, and another shared they try to “fast” during their 11-hour shifts to avoid eating out. Complete article

‘Please for the love of God stop doing this’: Walmart worker calls out customers for abandoning cart 06/12/2023

Walmart employee and TikToker Chelsea Jo (@finnandquinn) blasted shoppers who fill up their shopping carts with items, and then abandon the cart in the middle of the store.

She says in the video: “Hi, just your local Walmart employee here. Just ran across something that I’m used to seeing but I’m tired of seeing. Just a little PSA for everybody.”

“Please, for the love of god, stop doing this,” she continues as she flips the camera around to reveal a shopping cart that someone has left in the middle of an aisle in the store.

“This stuff isn’t even cold anymore,” Chelsea says as she handles various items in the cart that were previously refrigerated or frozen. She gestures to some cheese, frozen burritos, meat, and sour cream, saying, “All of this is bad now.”

As the camera zooms out, the Walmart employee pleads with those in her audience who find that they must abandon their carts, “At least tell an employee if you have an emergency…just tell somebody so we can put it away. Don’t just abandon it in the middle of f*cking nowhere.” Complete article

Crime remains top issue for Walmart, retail executives 06/13/2023

'We do need help from others to solve this issue,' Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said

Retailers can't solve growing organized retail crime alone, Walmart executives say.

The problem is getting worse with shopping center giant Westfield confirming it's leaving the San Francisco Centre mall amid rampant crime problems.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told FOX Business during an interview at Walmart's Shareholder Week in Arkansas last month the company needs help solving this issue, which is now costing the industry $94.5 billion in losses. Inventory losses combined with the measures taken to combat this issue, such as extra security, could bump up prices across the retail sector, Walmart has warned.

"We do need help from others to solve this issue. Retailers alone can't solve it," McMillon said, adding "a combination of things that'll have to happen for that to occur." ......

In some states, if it falls under a misdemeanor crime like shoplifting, offenders may only be served a citation, which is a notice to appear in court, he said.

"It can't be open season for individuals to go in and steal what they want and have no penalty," Johnston added.

He also has concerns about a bill recently passed by the California state Senate, Bill 553, which prohibits employers "from maintaining policies that require employees to confront active shooters or suspected shoplifters."

The intent of the bill is to ensure safety for employees, Johnston said. But he argued the way it's written appears to prevent any employee, including loss prevention or security-trained employees from apprehending shoplifters, he continued. Complete article

Why do so many Walmart products contain traces of fish? Viral TikTok alarms shoppers 06/15/2023

(NEXSTAR) – A viral TikTok has some people taking a closer look at their pantry after a video pointed out something fishy about the nutrition labels on Walmart’s generic food items.

The video zooms in on three Great Value products: marshmallows, pancake syrup and boxed mashed potatoes. Great Value is Walmart’s generic retail brand.

Near the nutrition facts and ingredients on each package is something out of place. On the marshmallows bag is a warning that reads “MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF TILAPIA.” A similar disclaimer on the syrup bottle says it may contain traces of anchovies.

On the mashed potatoes box, there are even more fish options: anchovies, perch, trout, whitefish and clams.

Why do so many of these products – which you’d think shouldn’t contain any fish at all – display such warnings? Complete article

Walmart Worker Notified When Customers Don't Scan at Self-checkout 06/16/2023

‘Which is why I keep everything in my cart’: Walmart worker says she gets notified every time a customer doesn’t scan an item at self-checkout

'I tried the usual at self checkout then the machine started beeping loud and showed a replay of me not scanning.'

In 2022, word that Walmart was taking stronger stances against self-checkout theft began circulating the internet. Shoppers have purportedly been arrested for putting items in their bags after failing to scan them at self-checkout, and one woman successfully sued the chain for $2.1 million after being wrongfully accused of stealing from the retailer after an error occurred at the cash register.

The global brand has implemented a slew of security measures, outfitting employees with tools and technology that assist them in keeping track of who is buying what and when. In fact, Walmart employees have taken to social media to urge folks not to steal from stores, as they say they almost always know when people are stealing.

This sentiment was echoed by TikToker @sunny.outdaway, who posted a viral TikTok expressing her annoyance in dealing with customers who think they’re pulling one over on staff. Complete article

Jury orders Walmart to pay $7.16M 06/15/2023

Walmart Inc. must pay $7.16 million to another company that makes hand sanitizer, a federal jury in Fayetteville ruled last week, not long after a Fayetteville circuit court jury hit the retailer with a $19.3 million judgment in a similar case.

The most recent case was filed in April 2021 by K7 Design Group Inc., in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, Fayetteville Division. The jury reached a verdict on Friday.

The New York-based firm said in its complaint that Sam’s Club, Walmart’s members-only warehouse division, ordered large amounts of hand sanitizer at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020.

Then as initial demand for the product abated, Sam’s Club found itself with excess inventory.

“Once Sam’s Club realized that it had over-ordered and did not have adequate storage space, it refused to accept further deliveries and pay for a substantial portion of product orders and commitments, leaving K7 with millions of dollars worth of hand sanitizer and related product that it manufactured specifically for Sam’s Club based on Sam’s Club’s purchases,” K7 said in its complaint. ‘Don’t think she did anything wrong!’: Viewers defend Walmart manager who was accused of ‘stealing’ from customer 06/19/2023

A Walmart customer filmed herself confronting a manager and accusing the worker of stealing money from her.

The three videos were uploaded by TikTok user Melissa Xin Xin (@melisaxinxin). It’s likely Melissa is not the customer in the video as she often reposts videos to her TikTok account. We’ve reached out to Melissa via TikTok comment.

In the first clip, a customer approached a Walmart manager. “Could you do me a favor and tell me who this is?” the content creator asked the manager, handing the manager a receipt. The customer let the manager know she was at register nine that morning. “Do you know who that is?” the customer asked her again, referring to the worker that checked her out.

The manager confirmed she was the worker who checked the customer out, saying, “I’m the one that took care of you.”

“You know that you didn’t put the money on my card, right?” the customer then asked her, referring to a Walmart MoneyCard that she claimed is listed on her receipt as “Walmart MoneyCard reload.”

“Yeah I did, hun,” the manager responded. The costumer claimed that the manager did not and that she doesn’t even own a Walmart MoneyCard. A back-and-forth between the customer and manager ensued over what type of debit card was swiped by the manager: A Bluebird card or Walmart MoneyCard. Complete article

Saw Someone Chowing Down in a Missouri Walmart - Is That Legal? 06/19/2023

I am faced with a dilemma. I saw something happen at a Missouri Walmart that could have been a crime in progress or was it? It involved a food choice and timing. Let's explore whether I saw a bandit or not.

Here's what happened. I was in a Missouri Walmart (which shall remain nameless) and saw something happen. It was a person pushing a cart through the grocery section where it was obvious that they became hungry.

I saw a person pick something off the shelf, open the box and start chowing down. It was none of my business so I didn't dare intervene, but it did make me wonder...did I witness a crime? I found out it's way more complicated than I thought.

Is eating food in a store before you've paid for it a crime?

The website Find Law explored the topic of whether it's legal to open bags of food and eat it before you get to the checkout. Here's how they broke it down. For someone to legally be shoplifting, they have to take something that isn't theirs and intentionally (or practically) deny the rightful owner the cost of the item.

Here's where it gets dicey. The article points out that for someone who's opened a bag of potato chips that has a fixed price, it's likely OK as long as they show the bag to the cashier and pay for it before leaving the store. If they eat fruit that is sold by weight though, then it's impossible to determine what they should pay.

They also point out that some areas allow shop owners (like a Walmart manager) to do a shoplifting search of a person if they believe there is evidence that a crime is happening. Don't you love legal grey areas? Complete article

ALWAYS WATCHED Mark Cuban issues warning on Walmart self-checkout stealing and anti-theft cameras – but says it will save shoppers 06/18/2023

BILLIONAIRE Mark Cuban has addressed the increasing amount of self-checkout cameras popping up at various retailers.

The business mogul said the controversial self-service option could tempt some shoppers to steal, but will ideally bring savings to the consumer by cutting costs.

Cuban was asked about self-checkout while he was quizzed on his business opinions in an interview with RealLyfe Production.

When the interviewer first brought up the topic, the software salesman immediately said it was weird as the shopper is being asked to do the scanning.

"It's weird but it's smart," he said in the video, adding that you've "always gotta put yourself in the shoes of kids."

Cuban explained that someone who is older and unaware of the technology could just walk out with items and feel there would be no repercussions. Complete article

‘No one else was taking my order so I took it’: Instacart worker makes money by picking up her own Walmart order 06/19/2023

In the past, a DoorDash worker shared their hack for getting discounted food through the app while simultaneously boosting their own acceptance rate on the platform: They simply place an order and then pick up their own meal.

While there were some people who thought that this trick might ultimately cost the dasher more money if the restaurant upcharges the prices of food placed through DoorDash, others thought there could be instances where ordering food this way may ultimately save folks a few bucks here and there if they were planning on eating out anyway.

Instacart worker and TikToker Sara Amber Victoria (@lilbabytrex) said that she just employed a similar technique after being given a $50 off a purchase of $100 or more through the app. After not finding anyone else to pick up her Walmart order, she decided to log into the app and pick up herself, securing not just the $50 offer but also $10 in her pocket for completing the request as a driver.

Victoria begins her video with a recording of her driving in her car while on her way to pick up her own Instacart order. “So, Instacart sent me a $50 coupon if I spend $100 I get $50 off. So I put it an order in for Walmart. I was being a chismosa and trying to see how much they were paying for my order. And I decided why not go shop my own order? And that’s exactly what I did,” she starts. Complete article

Police: Man ‘somehow’ escapes cop car after ‘undressed’ arrest at Miami Gardens Walmart 06/21/2023

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A Coral Springs man managed to escape a police cruiser after he was arrested at the Walmart near Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, making it out of the superstore’s parking lot Tuesday before being taken back into custody, according to authorities.

According to an arrest report from the Miami Gardens Police Department, a customer told an off-duty officer working security that a “strange Black male,” later identified as 26-year-old Trent Shalamar Shirley, was “acting up” inside the men’s bathroom at the store, located at 19501 NW 27th Ave.

The officer and a sergeant approached an “undressed” Shirley in the bathroom and told him he needed to leave. Police said Shirley told the sergeant “I will f--- you up,” as they were leaving the store.

“At the time, (Shirley) had the intention and the ability to do so,” the officer wrote.

While in the back of the officer’s cruiser, Shirley said he was hot and had a request for the arresting officer.

“He asked me if I could lower the window a little bit down,” the officer wrote. “And I did.”

“Somehow,” the officer wrote, Shirley was able to open the cruiser’s door from the outside and bolt out, leading the officer on a foot chase across the parking lot and to the street. Complete article

‘He has to check and you’re making it difficult’: Viewers defend Walmart worker after customer makes him go through parking lot just to check receipt 06/20/2023

One Walmart shopper’s way of handling a request to see his receipt as he left the building has sparked a debate on TikTok.

“So I just went to Walmart and bought a bunch of stuff,” user @berryd_treasure told viewers. “And as I was leaving, the guy asked me if [he] could see my receipt. Now, I never show my receipt to the Walmart people, but I said, ‘Yeah. Sure. I had it texted to my phone.’”

When the employee followed up by asking to see his phone, he informed him his phone was in the car and said he could follow if he wanted. The TikToker says the worker did just that, as he went back and forth “searching” for his vehicle, eventually even going out to a different part of the parking lot entirely.

“Then I got to my car and I did this—I pulled my receipt out of my pocket and I handed it to him,” he admitted, holding up a paper receipt. “He gave me a really dirty look. Like, motherf*cker, why do you guys have it an option to give me a text message as a receipt if you want to see my receipt at the door?” Complete article

Walmart shuttered South Side Chicago Ill. stores months after terms of developers’ tax incentive agreements expired 06/21/2023

When Walmart shuttered four Chicago stores in April, the closures set off a familiar pattern of dialogue across the city.

Residents of the majority-Black and Latino neighborhoods where three of the four stores were located worried the closures would make it harder for them to access affordable, fresh food. Elected officials, including then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot, slammed the abrupt nature of the closures, and questions emerged about whether Walmart had received government subsidies for opening stores in the city.

Walmart did not directly receive any tax incentives for the Chicago stores it closed. But two of the stores it shuttered, a Neighborhood Market grocery store in Grand Boulevard and a Supercenter in Chatham that also included a low-cost health clinic and a job training academy, were part of developments the city subsidized with tax increment financing dollars.

Public funds for both projects went to the sites’ developers. In both cases, the city required those developers to maintain certain levels or types of retail occupancy on their properties. But those requirements expired in December 2022. Months later, Walmart announced it would close the stores. Complete article

TOP SECRET I work at Walmart – I’ll let you in on a secret, our labels hide an anti-theft trick you can only see held up to lights 06/23/2023

A WALMART employee has claimed there is a hidden anti-theft measure the retailer uses to catch shoppers attempting to steal.

The worker took to social media to show customers how they might spot the alleged security device during their next trip to the store.

In a clip posted to TikTok by Walmart employee JaCambria (@jacambria.c), the influencer could be seen holding a pink T-shirt with a tag near the self-checkout kiosks.

"I am a worker at Walmart let me let y'all on a little secret," they wrote in the on-screen caption.

JaCambria then slowly moved the T-shirt's tag up to the lights, which revealed a small bump in the upper-right corner.

"It's a sensor," the worker claimed, making for an efficient method that staff can use to catch thieves.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Walmart for an official comment on the alleged anti-theft device.

Despite the seemingly sneaky anti-theft trick, several shoppers took to the comments to essentially confess that they've tried to get around them before.

"Sensor ain’t stopping nun bae," one person wrote. Complete article

‘No cashiers, only half of self-checkout working, THEN IT’S CARD ONLY!’: Walmart customer defends abandoning shopping carts after seeing long line 06/26/2023

'After doing all that shopping, I’m kind of irritated at this point, and I abandon my cart.'

In response to a Walmart worker’s video calling out people who abandon their full shopping carts, a customer explained circumstances in which they say the action is justifiable.

The stitched video starts off with a clip of Chelsea Jo (@finnandquinn), a Walmart worker who appears to be filming while at work. In the short video, Chelsea shows viewers an abandoned shopping cart that has a pack of water bottles, at least two packages of raw meat, and what appears to be a box with frozen burritos.

“Stop f*cking doing this. Please, for the love of God, stop doing this,” she urges customers.

Marquita (@shoppingbestie) then jumps onto the screen to explain the customer’s perspective. The TikToker has more than 114,000 followers and regularly posts about a variety of deals and products.

She explains that she’s had to abandon her carts in the past because she was confronted with “long *ss” lines, waiting upwards of 30 minutes with little progress. In the video, she shows photos of Walmart lines that snake around the store.

She explained that the frustration of the long lines is compounded by the fact that there will sometimes not be enough cashiers to handle the number of customers, and the self-checkout area only has a fraction of the kiosks in working order.

“After doing all that shopping, yeah, I’m kind of like irritated at this point and I abandon my cart,” Marquita says. Complete article

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police arrested a 28-year-old man Monday at a Walmart in northeast Miami-Dade after he shoplifted at the store and then grabbed a detective’s holstered gun, authorities said.

Gervin Alexander Zuniga, of North Miami, faces charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and petit theft.

According to his arrest report, two detectives were working an off-duty detail at the Walmart at 1425 NE 163rd St. when they were approached by a loss prevention investigator who notified them that a man had opened multiple packages of food and water inside the store and had concealed beers in his pocket.

Police said the detectives located Zuniga in the baby section and ordered him to leave the Walmart, but Zuniga, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, became irritated and refused to leave.

According to the report, the detectives grabbed Zuniga, who started resisting arrest, and forced him to the floor so they could place handcuffs on him.

Police said Zuniga then grabbed one of the detective’s gun, which was holstered and said, “I’m going to f***ing kill you, b****.”

Zuniga, however, was not able to remove the gun from the holster and was forced to the floor once again as the detectives were trying to escort him out of the store, authorities said. Complete article

‘Walmart workers scammed me’: Customer claims Walmart worker asked to see her receipt. She stole her rewards points 06/29/2023

No one expects to get scammed while shopping in-store, especially not by one of the store’s employees. Sadly, this is what one woman said precisely happened to them.

In a viral video that amassed more than 45,000 views since Tuesday, TikTok creator @ohwhenshesmiles said a Walmart employee pulled a fast one on her when she stole her rewards points as she completed her transaction in self check out.

“Some of the stuff that I picked up had those little yellow sensor tags on them,” she explained. “So when I got to the front and started ringing out, I asked the young lady that was working up there [if] could she have the tags removed for me.” Apparently, after removing the tags, the woman continued to linger and make small talk as the TikToker completed her transaction. But when she scanned her last item and paid for everything, that’s when the Walmart worker sprung into action.

“As soon as I ring the last item, she takes her phone out and scans a QR code on my screen,” she said.

That’s when she realized the worker had stolen her Walmart rewards points. Complete article

US Sues Walmart for Firing Worker With Seizure Disorder 06/30/2023

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Thursday announced a lawsuit against Walmart Inc. of Bentonville after the retailer fired a worker who has a seizure disorder.

The suit accuses Walmart of failing to provide a reasonable accommodation for the employee, who worked as a cashier at a store in Bullhead City, Arizona.

In a statement Friday, Walmart said, "We have been a top employer for those with disabilities for years and have thousands of associates who perform their jobs with reasonable accommodation. We don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind and take allegations like this seriously. We are reviewing the complaint and will respond in court as appropriate."

The employee, Stevey Wiman, asked for her seizure-related absences to be excused under a company attendance policy that makes accommodations for disabilities. But Walmart allegedly denied Wiman's request, told her that the absences would not be excused, and fired her. Complete article

Gig drivers for Walmart say they're forced to compete against bots for deliveries 06/29/2023

Chicago-area gig workers who make deliveries for Walmart say the company’s delivery app is being targeted by scammers who use bots to hoard orders on the platform, making it difficult for them to make a living.

The drivers are independent contractors who make deliveries for Walmart using the company’s delivery platform, called Spark.

Drivers who make deliveries out of the company’s Bedford Park, Cicero and Forest Park locations allege scammers have used bots to hoard orders.

Walmart says the use of bots on Spark violates its terms of use and that it investigates reports of bot usage and deactivates drivers who misuse the platform.

Some Spark drivers have been harassed and threatened by the alleged scammers while waiting in the parking lots for orders, advocates and drivers said. Drivers who say they’ve been harmed by the use of bots rallied Thursday morning outside the Cicero Supercenter to call attention to the issue. Complete article

‘I don’t pay $13 a month for this’: Walmart customer orders Pedialyte. Picker replaces that with 2-pound bag of flour 06/30/2023

'Online orders would always pick the worst produce and save the better stuff for the in-store shoppers.'

The convenience of having your groceries delivered right to your door makes life easier for many. However, one shopper says Walmart’s InHome delivery service messed up her order so badly, she’s wondering whether the service is even worth it.

In a TikTok video that has been viewed over 60,000 times, user Chubz (@c.hubz) said Walmart’s delivery service “days are numbered,” after they sent her rotten produce, the wrong item, and never even sent her one of the things she ordered.

In a series of slides captioned, “reason why Walmart got me f*cked up,” the TikToker showed her viewers how the company dropped the ball on her delivery. In the first slide, it appears that Walmart substituted a 2-pound bag of flour for the Pedialyte that Chubz ordered.

“Why??” the customer asked in the text overlay. “It’s not even a related substitution.”

Other slides showed images of rotting produce that included apples, an onion, and corn.

“How is this allowed?” Chubz asked. Complete article

Walmart Will Pay 4 Million Dollars in Scam Compensation: Are You Eligible for Payment? 06/29/2023

Using gift cards is a great (and normally secure) way to ensure that a gift is appreciated and put to good use by a recipient. But they are also a treasure trove for criminals looking to trick people out of their hard-earned money.

Top Class Actions reported that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered retail giant Walmart to pay a total of nearly $4 million in remission payments to consumers stemming from gift card scams that started in 2015.

After discovering the fraud, Walmart reportedly froze card balances in 2016 and 2017, typically for amounts between $500 and $1,000. If you were a victim of one of these scammers between the beginning of April 2016 and the end of July 2017, you could benefit from the Walmart remission payment decision.

If you were a victim of a scam resulting from a Walmart gift card bought during the fraudulent scheme period and believe you are owed money, check out eligibility qualifications, remission payment amount and claim filing instructions below. Complete article
