Which Alternative Ukrainian Reality Is Real?

From the beginning of the Russian invasion, if not years sooner during the 2014 coup, or even before that there have been several versions of the history of this conflict, most biased or incomplete. After looking closer at this I can't guarantee that the Russian version is credible, and I don't support their invasion; however, there's no doubt that our mainstream media and government are covering up many problems with their support for the Ukrainians, including the fact that they supported a coup in 2014, and this conflict never would have happened without that.

Of course, the most recent news about the invasion of Ukraine over the past year is important; however, there's a massive amount of propaganda to make it seem like anyone that disagrees with the political establishment must be "Russian propaganda" and it's been very effective. For this reason the forgotten history, and in many cases, the way the same traditional media reported on Ukraine before the invasion, including the fact that they had some powerful white supremacists in the military, is very important, and shows that they haven't been consistent or honest with all their reporting, so we should be highly skeptical of claims that everyone that disagrees with the establishment is "Russian propaganda." One of the most brazen claims is that there are few or no Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, repeated by most traditional media, especially Jim Acosta, who has repeatedly denied the existence of any Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, even though there were many reports, which I'll get to below, from credible sources, including traditional media before they stopped covering it after the Russian invasion. There are numerous articles from traditional media or claims by politicians that now support arming Ukrainian side acknowledging this before the Russian invasion that are now in total denial of this, while some of the evidence is being removed from the web, and in at least some cases are only available on the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive.

When Russia first invaded last February I wasn't aware of the vast majority of this, and in my first article on the subject, If You Care About Children, It Must Include Victims Of Both Russia & the USA 03/20/2022 I focused primarily on the double standard of demonizing our political opponents for targeting children while ignoring when our government or allies did the same thing, and I quickly realized that we weren't getting the full story, starting when they briefly pointed out that some of the Eastern parts of Ukraine weren't even controlled by the central government, but were controlled by sepratists, who as it turns out were fighting the Ukraine government for eight years, with very little media coverage about it. I also reviewed Ukraine on Fire 08/19/2021 and War with Russia? Stephen F. Cohen and Dan Rather in Conversation with Katrina Vanden Heuvel 06/17/2019 which covered the history of Ukraine during the 2014 coup that was virtually ignored by most media outlets and the political establishment. They were pretending a large portion of their recent history never exists at all and that there was never any provocation by Russia to invade, which the closer I looked, clearly turned out to be false, not that I think it justifies the invasion. But we need accurate information to make rational decisions about foreign policy; and we're not getting it.

As I said previously one of the most brazen examples of denial of the fact that there are Neo-Nazis is when politicians or the media reported on it before the Russian invasion then did an about face and pretended they never admitted there were white supremacists controlling large portions of the military in Ukraine as pointed out in Forty Democrats Labeled Ukraine's Azov Battalion a Terrorist Organization in 2019 06/23/2022 which cites a letter to Mike Pompeo labeling the Azov Battalion as a terrorist organization with a mixture of good claims that were supported by other sources and a couple exaggerations, which were refuted by other sources, but the point is that these forty Democrats were making one claim before the Russian invasion and another one after it, and they took their letter off the internet so it's no longer available, at least not directly. Fortunately the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive saved a copy of the letter which can still be retrived (last saved on December 9 2020) this was saved over five dozen times between October 2019 and December 2020, and hasn't been saved since then. We know that it must have been taken down between December 9 2020 and some time in 2022. I first checked it in the last couple months of 2022, but it's a reasonably good guess that it was taken down before Kanekoa News wrote their article and used the Wayback Machine instead of the online copy, and my best guess is that it was taken down shortly after the Russian invasion, when someone realized they would be on the wrong side of the narrative. One article by Michael Colborne pointed out some of the true claims and corrected some of the exaggerations or false claims, including the claim that the "Christchurch shooter," Brenton Harrison Tarrant, trained with the Azov battalion, which he claims is almost certainly false, and several other researchers came to the same conclusion; however, Michael Colborne still concludes that Azov is a an extremist terror group, and that this backfired, since it gave their critics the opportunity to discredit part of the story and imply that the rest of their claims are also false, which is a very common propaganda tactic.

This is just a small fraction of the evidence showing that the media often reported on Neo-Nazi ties before the Russian invasion but rarely if ever discuss it since then although most people have forgotten most of the stories, assuming they ever paid attention to them, but fortunately some people like Birrion Sondahl have reported on them and compiled a partial list of stories from before the Russian invasion in Ukrainian Nazism 10/23/2022 which removes any doubt about the fact that they have plenty of Nazis and many of them are in positions of power, especially in the Azov Battalion. One of the articles he cites, Ukraine underplays role of far right in conflict 12/13/2014 points out, once again, that there are exaggerations or outright lies on both sides, reporting that none of the far right Neo-Nazi groups got more than 5% of the vote, but if they were combined they would have, showing those in total denial and those claiming the Neo-Nazis have total control of the government are both wrong. However, this article also points out the Azov Battalion is dominated by Neo-Nazis. There are many other articles showing that even though the Neo-Nazis are a modest percentage of the population, they're a much larger percentage of those in the military fighting in the East, and those supporting the coup in 2014.

Perhaps one of the most notable Neo-Nazis in Ukraine was Andriy Biletsky who founded the Azov Battalion in 2014, which was all Neo-Nazis at the time, and to the best of my knowledge, it's still mostly if not entirely Neo-Nazis now. As BBC claims the Neo-Nazis were unable to break 5% in 2014, but it appears that they increased their support by 2016 enabling him to serve in parliment until 2019, when they were no longer able to break 5%. He also founded Social-National Assembly, which is essentially a Neo-Nazi organization, reversing the order so the word Social comes first. He wrote "The Word of the White Leader" which is a White Supremacist brochure, which is now hard to find on the internet, but tehre are still at least two copies written in Ukrainian, one that is only available on the Internet Archive, shown below along with a partial translation into English for the beginning. This shows they're not a large percentage of Ukrainians, but adds to the evidence that they have much more influence within the military, and his brochure also adds to the evidence that they had more influence on the 2014 coup which almost certainly wouldn't have happened without the Neo-Nazis, and without the coup there wouldn't have been an eight year civil war in the East or a Russian invasion last year.

On a few rare occasions even traditional media outlets like CNN admit Ukraine has a problem with Neo-Nazis, despite pundits like Jim Acosta that are in total denial, like this article, A far-right battalion has a key role in Ukraine’s resistance. Its Neo-Nazi history has been exploited by Putin 03/30/2022, but they keep coverage of this to a minimum, and I don't recall any mention of it on their Cable shows. They also try to make it seem like Russia is at fault for using it for propaganda purposes instead of arguing that they should stand up to the Neo-Nazis. Furthermore, near the end of this article it also shows a picture of child soldiers with a brief caption saying they're "at a paramilitary camp," presumably training for war. At about the same time there was an alleged Tweet from CNN which turned out to be fake and they were quick to point this out in various fact checking articles including CNN Did Not Tweet About Child Soldiers in Ukraine 04/16/2022; however, if you get to the end of the article, which most people seeing debunking fact checkers probably never read, it admits that even though the Tweet is false, the use of child soldiers, as young as seven to fifteen years old, in 2017 was real, and there's little reason to believe that it stopped since then, especially after the Russian invasion, as the following excerpt from the original article in 2018 indicates:

Photography special: the Ukrainian children learning battlefield skills at summer camp 08/26/2018

Children aged seven to 15 are spending their holidays training at military camps organised and run by Ukrainian nationalists fighting Europe’s forgotten war. Photographs by Alex Masi

It is the first day of summer camp and the kids are playing with Kalashnikovs. Tarakan, a girl of 15, takes just 25 seconds to complete the rifle’s maintenance. “Remove the magazine and cocking lever, release the gas cylinder, then put it back together again,” she says. “Be careful: never aim the barrel at a person. Unless you know for sure that you want to shoot.”

The Azovets camp, for children aged seven to 15, is organised by Azov Batallion, a radical Ukrainian nationalist militia founded by volunteers following the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014, and swiftly incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine. Azov leads the fight against pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine — a conflict that is now entering its fifth year. Complete article

Traditional media has been quick to debunk claims against Ukraine and slow to confirm portions of the claims that are true, assuming they confirm those at all; and there have been at least two more examples of credible claims of using child soldiers in Ukraine by Ukraine or both sides, including Ukraine conflict: Child soldiers join the fight 11/26/2014, written by the BBC which claims that both sides were using child soldiers in the beginning of the civil war, less than a year after the coup, and As the Russia-Ukraine heats up, media lionises child soldiers carrying assault weapons: All you need to know 03/07/2022, which focuses mostly if not entirely on child soldiers used by Ukraine, which they claim is continuing after the Russian invasion. No doubt there will be more information on this subject if you Google "Child soldiers in Ukraine," including some claims that are allegedly false, so some fact checking is advised.

Sam Biddle from the Intercept has reported on bias in social media when he wrote Facebook Allows Praise of Neo-Nazi Ukrainian Battalion If It Fights Russian Invasion 02/24/2023 which shows an obvious bias about censorship without adequate fact checking. I'm no fan of white supremacists, but instead of censoring them when, and only when I disagree with them, it seems far more rational and honest to debunk them when they're wrong and let the public come to their own conclusions without relying on censorship. There are also more reports of atrocities on both sides reported from the government before the Russian invasion that are now being ignored by the media including The UKRAINE 2017 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT and the 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Ukraine both which show atrocities committed by Ukraine which are not being reported in a high profile manner. For now they remain online, unlike some other claims, including the letter from the Congressmen mentioned above but, in case they're removed in the future, we can check the Wayback Machine which saved copies including 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Ukraine (Copy from the Wayback Machine captured 4/8/2020 which is currently mostly if not entirely identacal, but worth saving in case it's changed like other articles that have been removed.)

But most people aren't aware of a this due to massive amounts of censorship, which, in some ways, may be much more subtle in the United States than it is in Ukraine, at least to those not accustomed to checking alternative news outlets, which may be a significant majority of the public. However, the censorship may be much more obvious in Ukraine, and some news outlets in the United States are reporting on this, although except for alternative media outlets they're keeping the reporting on this to a minimum like this NPR article, which doesn't get nearly as much attention as Network News or Cable News, Zelenskyy has consolidated Ukraine's TV outlets and dissolved rival political parties 07/08/2022 The reporting on this is minimal in mainstream media, while those checking alternative media are much more likely to hear more about it, but even many alternative media outlets are supporting the establishment view, so many people may still be unaware of this censorship, and the fact that they're banning political parties from people with certain views, especially those of Russian descent that have been persecuted throughout the Civil War since the 2014 coup.

The propaganda supporting this war has been as relentless as most, if not all other wars, and there's no significant opposing views among the six corporations controlling well over 90% of the media in the United States. Furthermore, they have, as I said, support from some of the leading alternative media outlets, and a significant number of social media influences, whether they're being paid or not. We've been told dozens of times that "In war the first casualty is the truth," which has been repeated by many sources including Aeschylus, who said this twenty five hundred years ago, and when we're not at war few if any people ever dispute this, yet when we are at war, or in this case supporting a proxy war, few people are willing to acknowledge this and listen to both sides of the conflict and attempt to figure what the real truth is.

I've seen this on numerous occasions on Social media when I tried to cover both views, routinely telling people that I don't support the invasion, but there are legitimate doubts about the version of truth being presented by mainstream media. In many cases, when I say I oppose the Russian invasion, supporters of Ukraine are willing to listen, but then once I try to discuss the 2014 coup, the Civil War that went on for eight years before the Russian invasion, or the fact that there are Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, often with mainstream sources from before the Russian invasion, there have been numerous people accusing me of being a Russian propagandist and claiming everything I say that they don't like, or that disagrees with the mainstream media narrative is false, and on several occasion they've blocked me. Other people trying to sort through the truth have told similar stories. They often trust the mainstream media propaganda that has come out since the Russian invasion, but refuse to listen to people citing older articles from the same sources from before the invasion that provide blatantly opposing views, like the letter from forty Congressmen mentioned above.

There should be little doubt that the reason so many people fall for this propaganda is that they're routinely accompanied by very effective appeals to propaganda which many peace activists have been trying to warn us against for decades; but perhaps one of the people to describe this the best isn't a peace activist, but a war criminal, who admitted the tactics he used while on trial for his life almost eighty years ago. Despite his credibility problems Herman Goering made a good point, which can be confirmed from more reliable sources in an interview with Gustave Gilbert as indicated in the following excerpt:

Nuremberg Diary - by Gustave Gilbert
Interview with Herman Goering

Gilbert recorded Goering's observations that the common people can always be manipulated into supporting and fighting wars by their political leaders:

We got around to the subject of war again and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction.

"Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."

"There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." Complete article

We need to recognize that the most reliable source of news hasn't been either the government or traditional news outlets controlled by Wall Street corporations. But even these news outlets have shown they don't tell a consistent version of history, which many alternative media outlets have shown. Good researchers have shown that all wars, at least since World War II, have been based on lies, but the truth rarely gets to the majority of the public until after it's too late, and those relying on mainstream media often don'e even get it then. Even World War II was based at least partly on lies; most people will agree that Hitler had to be stopped; but most people still don't know that many powerful people actually supported him before the war and considered him the lesser evil compared to the USSR. Our government routinely supports future enemies, then tries to rewrite history afterwards.

LEADER

ANDRIJ BILETSKY: A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Andriy Biletskyi was born on August 5, 1979 in the city of Kharkiv in a Ukrainian family. The father comes from the family of Zaporozhian Cossacks, and the mother - from a Ukrainian noble family, to which Vasyl Lukashevich, the founder of the "Little Russian Society" (1821–1822), belonged. In 2003, Andriy got married, having founded his own family, which in 2007 was supplemented by a son, Oleksandr.

Faculty of History of Kharkiv National University named after V. N. Karazina Biletsky graduated with a red diploma. His diploma research was devoted to the activities of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and was recognized as one of the best student works of Ukraine in 2001. The informal supervision of his scientific activities was carried out by the well-known Ukrainian historian Yaroslav Dashkevich. After graduating from the University, he worked as a teacher at Kharkiv universities, continued to study the military history of Ukraine (researched the conscript army of Kyivan Rus). But later, priority was given to creation, not to the study of history.

Since his youth, he was actively involved in sports, had the 1st youth division in boxing. Trained in the sports club "Minamoto clan" under the leadership of Gennady Minka. Subsequently, he engaged in knife fighting, practical shooting and other sports, in which he achieved considerable success. These skills helped put the training system in the organizations headed by him at a high level. But later, preference was given to fighting in the streets, not in the rings.

Andriy Biletskyi took an active part in the nationalist movement since his student days. In 1999, together with a group of Kharkiv nationalist athletes, he made an attempt to go to war in Kosovo to fight Islamic expansion in the Balkans. In 2001, he took part in the March riots in Kyiv as part of the "Ukraine without Kuchma" campaign, during which he was detained by the police and placed under administrative arrest. Because of this, the SBU tried to force the management of the University to expel Biletskyi from the university.

Since 2002, he headed the Kharkiv detachment of the "Trident" organization named after S. Bandera. Subsequently, he cooperated with the Ukrainian Conservative Party. In 2003, he began active cooperation with the Kharkiv branch of the SNPU and effectively supported opposition to the liberalization of the SNPU and its transformation into the "Svoboda" VO.

After the dissolution in Ukraine of the "Patriot of Ukraine" Association for the Assistance of the Armed Forces and the Military Medical University under the SNPU, Andriy Biletskyi created a new, independent of any party structures, the "Patriot of Ukraine" Organization, which has been its constant commander since the beginning of its existence. The first members of the Organization were young fighters from Kharkiv branches of SNPU, UNA-UNSO and "Trident", who clearly saw the decline of nationalist structures of the 20th century and the need to create a new, truly effective nationalist force of the 21st century.

Since the beginning of the Organization's activities, Andriy Biletskyi has been planning, coordinating and directly participating in all of its activities, including direct actions. He personally led almost all groups of fighters carrying out operations to identify and destroy drug-trafficking points, detain illegal migrants, etc. Managed all mass actions of the Organization (from marches and rallies to acts of civil disobedience and mass force actions). During the events of October 18, 2008, he was at the head of the attacking column and was arrested together with all the fighters of the Organization.

The acquired social and political experience and innate qualities of the Leader allowed Andriy Biletsky to act as the initiator of the formation and lead a united organized nationalist front — the Social National Assembly (SNA), around which effective nationalist organizations and groups united.

In the circle of social-nationalists, since that time he has been called the Leader. This is how the Ukrainian nationalists titled before that only Yevhen Konovalts, the initial commander of the UVO, the founder and Leader of the OUN.

In a few years, the SNA was transformed into a powerful political force, which became one of the biggest threats to the current ruling regime, which provoked massive political repression against the organized Social-Nationalist movement. After the arrest of the leaders of the capital branch of the SNA (the "Vasylkiv Terrorists" case), the leader organized and led picketing of SBU offices throughout Ukraine, in some cities state security offices were thrown with smoke grenades and blocked. The anti-Ukrainian regime also did not hesitate to respond - an armed attack was carried out on the Kharkiv office of the SNA, which, however, was successfully repelled (the case of "Defenders of Rymarska"). Organizational officers who repelled the attack were arrested, and an attempt was made on Biletskyi. But despite everything, the Organization, led by its unchanging Leader, stubbornly refused to capitulate to the regime. So, in December 2011, Andrii Biletskyi was arrested. Since that time, he has been leading the Social Nationalist movement from behind the bars of the Kholodnohorsk prison for almost two years. However, even in prison, he does not give up - he establishes a system of mutual communication between imprisoned nationalists, inspires and coordinates his brothers at large to continue the work he started.

* * * * * * *

For almost two years, the dogs of the occupation regime have been holding our Leader captive. It is inappropriate to talk about the reasons for his arrest. Because he is not being held behind bars for the charges that have been officially brought against him. With such an evidence base against him, there is no reason to keep him in the pretrial detention center. The fact that he is still deprived of his liberty proves only one thing - he is feared. A pack of gray yard dogs, who have neither honor nor conscience, and live exclusively on scraps from the budget, like the fire-fearing leader of a pack of free wolves, who despises their canine sycophancy. The leader is imprisoned because he is a symbol of our movement; the only one capable of overthrowing this rotten anti-social regime of anti-national occupation. Lying dogs in blue uniforms know what he means to us, so we invite all of us to remember who the Leader is to us. Images of dead civilians strewn across the town prompted Western countries to call for those responsible for war crimes in Ukraine to be punished. The Russian defence ministry said that all Russian military units had left Bucha on March 30, and that civilians had been free to move around the town or evacuate while it was under Russian control. "During the time that Russian armed forces were in control of this settlement, not a single local resident suffered from any violent actions," it said. Bucha killings: Satellite image of bodies site contradicts Russian claims 04/06/2022

I know there are doubts from sources more credible than Russia including Joe Lauria of Consortium News. 04/06/2022 But Facebook is trying to raise doubts about their credibility. If Lauria is right there are major doubts about satellite photos claiming the bodies were there for weeks, assuming they do claim that; and that raises doubts about why they didn't report on those bodies weeks earlier. https://consortiumnews.com/.../questions-abound-about.../ The reports of satellite photos weeks earlier appear to be true, or at least partly true, but they raise other questions. The reason they may not have reported it earlier might be the photos were to vague to identify. However, as Joe Lauria and at least one other source pointed out there was a smiling mayor Anatolii Fedoruk saying it was a “glorious day” when the troops withdrew, but if the photos and bodies were real, then this makes no sense, since he should have been outraged and horrified. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense for Russia to leave behind such an obvious propaganda opportunity. Nor does an incompetent effort to create the propaganda make sense. How do you make sense of the senseless. https://www.bbc.com/news/60981238

Walmart Crime Report December 2022

Walmart had at least fourteen more shootings in December 2022, with four of them fatal, bringing the total for the year to at least one-hundred-sixty-five, which is a new record, breaking the previous record of one-hundred-fifty-two set in 2019. There were also at least four more deaths unrelated to the shootings. Two of those fatal shootings were by police officers, one of those was shooting a person taking a hostage in Mississippi, the other was a man allegedly attacking s woman at the time. One of the non-fatal shootings was also the police; and there were at least seven injuries from the shootings, including at least one Walmart employee.

In addition to the fourteen shootings and eight deaths last month Walmart also had 17 shootings and 12 deaths in January; 14 shootings and 9 deaths in February; 14 shootings and 9 deaths in March; 3 shootings and 2 deaths in April; 16 shootings and 10 deaths in May; 12 shootings and 13 deaths in June; 14 shootings and 6 deaths in July; 21 shootings and 9 deaths in August; 7 shootings and 9 deaths in September; 14 shootings and 6 deaths in October; and 19 shootings and 13 deaths in November; which comes to a total of 165 shootings and 100 deaths. This is their seventh consecutive year with over a hundred shootings, and there's little reason this will go down much if at all anytime soon, especially since Walmart and our government routinely ignore the long term causes of crime and violence.

In addition to the fourteen shootings, there were more than a dozen other gun related crimes, including at least two more that allegedly involved shootings, but police claim they were false alarms. Both these, along with one of the real shootings happened within a few days, and the police were quick to claim there was no evidence supporting all three even though people allegedly heard shots in each and one of them involved a victim with a gunshot wound, which they later confirmed was real, if either of the other two prove to be real that will be on top of the ones mentioned. There is a growing trend of police rushing to say there's no threat at Walmart, which might mean that some incidents aren't being reported promptly, if they're doing this to assure the public for Walmart's benefit. There's also a growing amount of evidence showing this is a real possibility; including the fact that they're much more likely to delay reporting on many incidents, including one armed robbery last month that took two and a half weeks to be reported in the media; and another case last month where the headline said someone pointed a gun during a robbery, without mentioning that he fired a shot until the end of the article.

And, of course, there were numerous lawsuits filed against Walmart last month as a result of the mass shooting just before Thanksgiving, and Walmart is trying to get them thrown out. There's a good chance that Walmart will succeed in getting them thrown out, or seriously limiting their ability to succeed, since they routinely fight everything tooth and nail, and laws are made to enable the wealthy to have a major unjustified advantage. This is true even though there was plenty of evidence of problems with the shooter years ahead of time, and Walmart did nothing, partly because of workman compensation laws that provided a certain amount of immunity to employers, shifting the burden to insurance companies who are regulated, and not in a position to address potential problems like this.

In addition to the four people killed in shootings there were two bodies found in cars last month, and two pedestrians killed after being hit by cars in separate states. One of the bodies found in a car was a suicide, although they didn't specify the method; the most common method, buy far, of suicides at Walmart is shooting, and if that was the case it would add one to the total number of shootings. The article about this suicide also cites a study that claims that "4,400 unexplained bodies are discovered each year and 600,000 people in the nation go missing each year," but it doesn't say whether the high number of missing persons include people found alive within a day or longer. These statistics are almost never reported, however accurate they are, but there's little doubt that a large percentage of these are poor people without adequate health care, educational or economic opportunities, as well as many drug addicts. There's also plenty of evidence, as I've pointed out in several previous articles, showing academics know how to solve many of these problems, and that programs doing this actually save much more than they cost; yet the wealthy that control the political system refuse to implement proven solutions. If something happens to rich people or a celebrity, like the football player that recently had a heart attack they're quick to draw attention to it, and at least try to solve the problem; but if there are a much larger number of poor people, and in some cases obvious and easy solutions, they ignore them and bury the story where few people see it without trying to solve the problem.

Walmart's CEO claimed that shoplifting has increased significantly and that they might be forced hike prices or close stores, as if this is something new and inexplicable. Most of the media presented this claim without critical review; but within a few days there was news saying that a large number of customers and workers claimed the reason was clearly the increased use of self-checkout, which no doubt is one of the biggest part of the problem; yet the media often portrays this as a difference of opinion, even though it shouldn't even be a close call. There should also be no doubt that their store design and massive cuts in employees is a major contributing cause to this problem. In many cases, after cutting cashiers or other employees, they increased hiring of loss prevention officers or cameras and other technology to catch people stealing whether it's at the self-checkout of not, yet this isn't solving the problem, even though they arrest many more people and force taxpayers to pay for police, courts, and prisons, while also putting both workers and customers at risk since this high crime problem often escalates to violence when they get caught. If Walmart had to pay these expenses instead of tax payers it's virtually guaranteed they would have reversed their efforts to increase automation and self-checkout years ago, possibly shortly after they began experimenting with it.

There should be no doubt that taxpayers are subsidizing Walmart's crime problem, and it's almost certainly against the wishes of the majority of the public, even though they may not be fully informed about it.

There was also at least one Walmart security officer and two prison detention officers that were caught stealing from Walmart, in one case over $5,000. Law officers have repeatedly proven to be just as inclined to commit crimes, if not more likely, and they often don't get charged, but at Walmart they do. They're more likely to get charged for stealing from the rich than they are for killing poor people suspected of committing crimes, often even when the victims are innocent.

Walmart has also demonstrated that they don't ensure their customers won't be scammed by third parties in a variety of way, including another incident where they sold gift cards which were drained by scammers, which happens much more often than people realize, and Walmart often refuses to take responsibility for it, although if they get enough media attention they often change their mind, which is why victims of scams should speak out, even if threatened by Walmart employees, which has happened in the past, but if the customer is right they have a right to speak. In another case scammers were able to install a "skimmer" to steal customers private information, which can be done very quickly, especially at self-checkout stations without cashiers or anyone else watching, and it's unlikely Walmart will take responsibility for that either. Another case where one of their drivers took a "picture" of the package then took it right back, without realizing the customer was nearby and watching as he did it; in this case, after the customer made it clear they wouldn't accept it, they agreed to deliver a replacement.

They also had numerous fights, including one where a customer threw a hammer hitting a handicapped person, several assaults on employees, two or three people abusing their own babies, and another picking up a strangers child out of the shopping cart, police tasing an alleged shoplifter over a dozen times, and several fights, at least on one at the self-checkout counter.

In addition to the two fatal accidents there were at least a dozen more chases, some resulting in crashes, one that looks almost like real life bumper-cars, crashes without chases, stolen vehicles, carjackings, and other automobile crimes.

There were close to, if not more than a dozen knife attacks or threats including several robberies and stabbings. They also had at least three cars catch fire and another three fires in stores, including one on Christmas eve that was clearly arson, and others with causes that haven't been reported yet. They're so incompetent at securing their merchandise that large thefts well over ten thousand dollars happen on a regular basis including the theft of $25,000 worth of cell phones last month, and another incident where $25,000 worth of jewelry was stolen plus at least two more thefts for two and ten thousand dollars.

If there's any doubt that the courts favor corporations like Walmart this should have been eliminated when it was recently disclosed that a judge that ruled in Walmart's favor owned stock in Walmart, which is an obvious conflict of interests that should have resulted in her recusal, yet the appeals court let the ruling stand. There should be no doubt that when courts allow people with brazen conflicts of interests to pass judgement that they no longer have credibility, yet this isn't an isolated incident, there are many more conflicts of interests including from the Supreme Court.

There have been numerous reports of over charges at Walmart again, some where they were charged twice from numerous locations, and they received fines in two states for overcharging, and more fines for failing to follow procedures with workers compensation. They also had some absurdly low mark downs to 3-cents for many products, but they refused to honor them and threatened to throw people in jail when they tried to buy these products. This is far from unprecedented; there have been numerous times where Walmart came up with false advertising, or didn't have enough in stock during big sales where consumers were outraged, especially during the holidays, and police have often threatened to arrest angry customers, but no one in power has ever tried to hold Walmart executives accountable for their mistakes. A few years ago, when Bobby Jindal was still governor of Louisiana they made a mistake allowing poor people to get more than their official limits on EBT cards, but instead of charging or disciplining the people that made the mistake, they threatened to charge the poor for taking advantage of it.

This adds to an enormous amount of other evidence to show laws are made, and enforced, by the rich, to control the rest of us.

They can't even implement a rational plan to ban plastic bags, which they did in some parts of the country, but then they gave people reusable bags that piled up and they couldn't use them all for deliveries, which does more harm than good, of course!

Walmart had at least one more recall of chicken, and they found arsenic in their spices. Workers ahve been disclosing the codes they use to avoid alarming customers when there's a problem, which might do more harm than good since customers may justifiably or not jump to their own conclusions, but "code blue" is a bomb threat, which is almost always a false alarm, and happens just about every day somewhere in the country.

One thing they hope most people don't notice is that a Utah customer claimed she found mouse poop in her pizza, which led to inspections by the health department. Another customer claimed they found a price scanner in her bag which employees allegedly put there by accident. And a famous parking pole in Maine has been again for the forty-fifth time, at least, not that they can keep count for certain. Walmart once again lost their bid to avoid taxes at another Maine store, which they keep appealing costing both sides a lot of money. What isn't widely reported is that part of the reason many towns across the country are short on money is they gave unfair tax advantages to Walmart to lure them in and wiped out small businesses that paid their fair share of taxes.

One Walmart customer was outraged because of a toy for toddlers or babies that tells dirty jokes, saying Santa isn't real or warning about pedophile priests. Another Walmart customer went viral on social media complaining about lack of baby formula in a state that is banning abortion, and pointing out the obvious hypocrisy.

Someone who looks a lot like a barbie doll went on a video rant about how the Walmart delivery person sent her a picture of the woods close to her home and told her that's where they delivered her barbie doll, and she spent an enormous time searching for it and discussing it on social media which is almost as odd as the person who sent the delivery picture; and she's far from the only people claiming that Walmart isn't making many of their deliveries, even though they often try to charge for them. A so-called "Walmart Karen" (this label ignores the fact that most girls named Karen aren't racist and don't act this way) went viral after she demanded respect and got tased by the police instead.

Marjorie Taylor Greene was outraged when someone sent her a photo of a Georgia store selling Dildos next to children's tooth brushes, which was allegedly moved fast after it made national news.

This isn't as bad as a man masturbating in the store and ejaculating on a customer, which has happened numerous times before, including a couple incidents by the same man, one at another Walmart.

They had an unusual suspect in a car crash into two other cars, when the police found out it was being driven by a dog, with a guilty look on his face.

I suppose I could have made some of this up, but I didn't have to; this is Walmart!

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2022. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

$25K in cell phones stolen during Pa. Walmart smash and grab in St. Marys 12/01/2022

ELK COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A smash and grab robbery at Walmart in Saint Marys is being investigated after the suspects made off with $25,000 worth of cell phones.

According to state police out of Punxsutawney, a man and woman wearing face masks walked into Walmart on Million Dollar Highway at 6 a.m. Nov. 17 with face masks on. They walked back to the electronics section and used a crowbar they reportedly had with them to smash open a display case.

The duo then grabbed over $25,000 worth of cell phones and left with them in a rug scrubber vacuum box. Complete article

Va. Walmart worker's suit over shooting faces legal obstacles, experts say 12/01/2022

(Reuters) - An employee at the Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, where a supervisor shot six co-workers dead last week may struggle to prevail in a $50-million lawsuit she filed accusing the retailer of failing to protect its workers, legal experts say.

A system meant to help workers get compensated for workplace injuries could make it difficult for the lawsuit to succeed.

The United States averages two mass shootings, -- defined as an incident killing or injuring four or more people -- a day, according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group. But while many of those shootings occur in the workplace, employers are rarely held responsible.

That is in part because nearly all U.S. states, including Virginia, require employers to buy workers compensation insurance to pay workers for medical expenses and lost wages stemming from workplace injuries. In return, the employers are shielded from most lawsuits workers could otherwise bring.

"As a general matter, employees cannot sue their employers for injuries that they suffer on the job due to negligence by the employer," said Timothy Lytton, a professor at Georgia State University College of Law. Complete article

India won’t enforce payments market share cap until 2025 in win for Google and Walmart 12/02/2022

India won’t enforce a check on the market share for players operating on the homegrown payments network until December 31, 2024 in a surprising extension to the deadline that analysts say is a major a win for the market leaders Google Pay and Walmart’s PhonePe in the South Asian market.

The National Payments Corporation of India, the regulatory body that oversees the Unified Payments Interface payments network, said on Friday that it reached the decision in part to ensure existing players had enough time to comply with the rules.

“Taking into account the present usage and future potential of UPI, and other relevant factors, the timelines for compliance of existing TPAPs who are exceeding the volume cap, is extended by two (2) years i.e. till December 31, 2024 to comply with the volume cap,” it said in a statement. LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Online shopping should be quick and easy, but for shoppers like Kayla Hicks-Frangos, it has been anything but simple.

Move Over 11ft8 Bridge, This Maine Walmart Parking Lot Pole Has Been Hit At Least 45 Times 12/03/2022

One small town in the great white north seems to have parking poles at its local Walmart that drivers can’t avoid hitting. A local recently posted more than 20 photos of accidents where drivers steered their vehicles into a stationary parking pole. All resulted in damage and some even caused vehicles to flip over.

We’ve seen cases of inattentive drivers causing damage before but it’s rare to see it happen again and again in the same location. Typically, locations, where such accidents do occur regularly, are irregular in their own way. For example, the infamous 11-foot-8 rail bridge is dangerous because it’s unique and drivers aren’t prepared for its low clearance.

What makes this series of accidents strange is that it’s at a Walmart parking lot, a place where the vast majority of Americans have been many times without incident. Nevertheless, one vehicle after another seems to have smacked into a pole at the Walmart Supercenter in Auburn, Maine. Complete article

Walmart CEO says company may hike prices, close stores if wave of shoplifting continues 12/06/2022

The chief executive of Walmart said this week that the company may be forced to close down stores or raise prices if a wave of shoplifting continues to buffet the company.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC's Squawk Box that thefts at the company's stores are posing "an issue" that's "higher than what it has historically been."

“We’ve got safety measures, security measures that we’ve put in place by store location," he said. "I think local law enforcement being staffed and being a good partner is part of that equation, and that’s normally how we approach it."

Yet the CEO argued that "a lax approach from prosecutors could impact prices and lead to store closures down the line," according to CNBC.

"If that’s not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and or stores will close,” he argued, though he noted that “it’s really city by city, location by location. Complete article

Two women resist arrest after allegedly jumping Ca. Walmart sales associate [VIDEO] 12/07/2022

Suddenly, Walmart is the place where people go when they want to act up. However, Walmart has also been home to some tender moments, in 2022. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. After a greeter in a California location tried to fight a customer, based on race, and a North Carolina location shooting, this happens. Earlier this week, some ladies allegedly jumped a Walmart sales associate. When they were placed under arrest, they resisted.

Exactly what caused all of this is not clear, but the situation was definitely intense. When the video begins, there are at least two females nearby the Walmart customer service. The ladies are screaming and there is one worker holding them back. Meanwhile, there is a man who looks like security, who is talking to the ladies. From the looks of things, the man was trying to defuse the situation, which was already intense.

By the time it was all said and done, the ladies ended up causing a bigger scene. A police officer is also shown in the video. While the officer is trying to place an arrest, the ladies clearly begin fighting back. In addition to resisting the officer, they are also trying to get their hands on the Walmart worker. As a result, the women ended up being physically dragged out of the store. Complete article

Pro-Wal-Mart Ruling Let Stand Despite La. Judge’s Stock Ownership 12/09/2022

A suit against Wal-Mart Lousiana LLC won’t be revived, even though the judge who dismissed it owned stock in the company and should have recused herself, the Fifth Circuit said.

Judge Rebecca Doherty owned Wal-Mart stock when she dismissed Sloane Roberts’s 2015 suit against the company and law enforcement officers, which grew from injuries she sustained during her arrest in 2010.

After the conflict was discovered in 2021, Roberts filed for relief from the judgment, but it was denied.

The appellate opinion comes in the face of a new law requiring more transparency in the financial holdings of federal judges. Complete article

Customer charged twice at Pine Bluff Arkansas Walmart after system experiences 'technical issue' 12/08/2022

Walmart To Pay $500,000 for Allegedly Failing To Follow Pricing Procedures for Workers’ Compensation Prescriptions in Massachusetts Pharmacies 12/06/2022

BOSTON — Retail pharmacy provider Walmart, Inc. has agreed to pay $500,000 after allegedly failing to follow prescription pricing procedures that are in place to keep costs down and prevent overcharges in the workers’ compensation insurance system, Attorney General Maura Healey announced today.

The pricing procedures, required by Massachusetts regulations, ensure that prescription costs will be reviewed against certain regulatory benchmarks. According to the assurance of discontinuance, filed this week in Suffolk Superior Court, Walmart allegedly failed to follow those regulations when applying prices for various injured worker prescriptions from 2016 to the present, at Walmart pharmacy locations in Massachusetts.

“Having a workers’ compensation system that is transparent, functional, and affordable is essential for employers and workers across Massachusetts,” said AG Healey. “My office will continue to ensure that companies are following our state’s rules and regulations that guarantee drug pricing in our workers’ compensation system is handled fairly.” Complete article

Philadelphia AR-15-armed guard eyes Walmart, Wawa after defending 'property, liberty and life' at gas station 12/09/2022

After being hired by a North Philadelphia gas station owner following a string of thefts and illegal activity on the property, lead agent and AR-15-toting S.I.T.E Security State Agent Chief Andre Boyer hopes to provide his services to larger retailers like Wawa and Walmart, after crime in the city "hit rock bottom."

"I'm here to protect my clients and the owner and his employees. If someone walks into this store right now with a weapon and threatens to harm any of them, I can open fire, and I will open fire to protect property, liberty and life," Chief Boyer said Friday outside the gas station in an appearance on "Varney & Co."

According to Boyer, who leads a team of armed former law enforcement officers and has lived in Philadelphia "all [his] life," the city’s crime crisis has worsened under the watch of the current mayor, district attorney and police commissioner.

‘He takes the package and drives away!’: Customer says Walmart delivery driver stole Apple Watch she purchased 12/08/2022

In the clip, Gina shows a screenshot of the blurry photo the delivery driver had sent as proof of delivery.

“This man takes a picture. I watch him, I’m right here, I’m right in like, the side area,” she says, pointing to the gate in the photo. “So this man leaves the package right there on the gate on the sidewalk.”

Walmart rolled out self-checkout to streamline operations and reduce labor – but employees and customers say it's causing a surge in thefts 12/13/2022

Walmart's CEO has warned that the retailer may need to close down stores due to theft – but many of the company's customers and employees blame one growing feature of the store for enabling shoplifting: self-checkout.

Walmart CEO and President Doug McMillon told CNBC earlier this month that theft "is higher than what it has historically been" and there will be consequences "if that is not corrected over time." Since McMillon made those comments, more than 100 Walmart customers and former and current employees reached out to an Insider reporter imploring the retailer to rely less on self-checkout.

"They need to hire cashiers again and do away with so many self-checkout," said Mindy Stanley, a Walmart customer from Ashland, Kentucky. "I'd say they are losing so much due to that."

To be sure, Walmart still utilizes cashiers at stores across the nation. But the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant, like so many other retailers, has increasingly relied on automation as a means of improving customer experience and reducing labor cost. Complete article

B.C. Canada man shocked after $700 drained from his Walmart gift cards 12/13/2022

Expert says fraudsters love gift cards because they're anonymous and easily accessible in stores.

Kevin Wilson was thrilled when, as part of a Black Friday promotional deal, he got two Walmart gift cards totalling $700.

But when he went to a Walmart near his home in Surrey, B.C., this month to use his cards, Wilson was dismayed to discover they'd been drained — leaving him with a balance of just 27 cents.

According to transaction records, one card's cash was spent at a Walmart in Richmond, B.C., and the other, at a Walmart in Mississauga, Ont. — far across the country.

"I was in shock. The cards hadn't left my possession," said Wilson. He added that the cards showed no signs of being tampered with.

"It was just like utter disbelief. How is this possible?" Complete article

How Walmart self-checkouts have ‘failed customers and cost them money’ as thefts hit an all time high 12/18/2022

WALMART self-checkouts thefts are costing the company millions - meaning customers could soon face massive price hikes and shuttered stores.

They are promoted as a quick and easy way to shop, but self-checkouts may be causing thefts to skyrocket while actually taking longer than cashiers.

This week, Walmart announced that thefts at its stores has reached an all-time high, with many people blaming self-checkouts for the rise.

But despite their issues, the machines are becoming increasingly popular with the big brand supermarkets.

In 2018, just 18 per cent of all grocery shopping was done through self-checkout, but this has risen to 30 per cent last year.

It’s estimated that Walmart loses as much as $3billion a year due to shoplifting, according to Reuters. Complete article

As Walmart CEO warns of crime wave's impact on retail, reports show how thieves brazenly rip off stores 12/19/2022

Businesses across the country have been battered by crime this year, including retail behemoth Walmart. As shoppers flock to stores this holiday season, even Walmart’s CEO warned this month that the uptick in crimes need to end or consumers could see higher prices and even stores shutting down.

"Theft is an issue. It’s higher than what it has historically been," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC’s "Squawk Box" earlier this month. Walmart's plastic bag ban leaves some customers saddled with mounds of reusable bags 12/19/2022

Each week, Grant orders Walmart groceries for pickup at a depot near his home in Toronto. Due to the plastic bag ban, the retailer now packs his items in reusable bags — new ones for each order.

Grant estimates he has acquired about 300 over the past six months.

"It's a bit crazy," he said, pointing to a large pile of blue Walmart bags stuffed in the trunk of his car. "In a month, I can be accumulating anywhere from 40 to 50." Complete article

What does 'Code Blue' in Walmart signify and how to react if you ever hear it? 12/21/2022 Bomb threat

Announcements in Walmart stores are usually not worth the concern of a customer. But when strange messages come out from the loudspeaker, it can be unnerving. Sometimes, the messages can indicate serious issues that require immediate attention.

Mashed, a popular magazine, revealed that Walmart has several such coded announcements with numbers, colors, and phrases, to convey information and alert its staff. They then take necessary action depending on what emergency the code signifies.

Walmart uses codes instead of revealing the emergency plainly not to create panic among customers, as it could worsen the already dire situation by creating mayhem and undermining the pre-planned strategies meant to tackle the crisis.

One such word is ‘Code Blue’.

A Redditor shared an experience where they heard ‘Code Blue’ being announced through the speaker. It was revealed that those words had the staff shut all the main doors, and the customers were held inside till the bomb squad showed up and cleared the issue.

Another Redditor shared their experience where ‘Code Blue’ was called because a backpack was left in the parking lot. The authorities then arrived and confirmed it was safe.

Other secret codes include ‘Code Brown’ for a violent threat nearby, ‘Code Red’ signifies a fire, and ‘Code Green’ indicates a hostage condition.

The most famous of all the Walmart codes is ‘Code Adam’, which came into existence after Adam Walsh, John Walsh’s son, was kidnapped from a Sears department store. ‘Code Adam’ signals a child's missing and requires the staff to put aside all their work till the child is found. Complete article

Walmart Is Under Fire After a Report Alleged High Levels of Arsenic and Lead in Its Spices 12/22/2022

After a report alleged that there were high levels of arsenic, lead, and cadmium in some Walmart spices, the retailer is facing a new lawsuit. Read on to learn more about this legal battle.

On June 24, plaintiffs Susan Gagetta and Tracie Gomez filed a class action lawsuit against Walmart in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claiming that certain Great Value herbs and spices contain heavy metal such as lead, arsenic, and cadmium.

The plaintiffs included Great Value's basil leaves, chili powder, ground cumin, organic ground ginger, and organic paprika in their complaint.

"Heavy Metals in foods pose a serious safety risk to consumers because they can cause cancer and serious and often irreversible damage to brain development as well as other serious health problems," the suit says. Complete article

Walmart and Target Have a Big Problem They Don't Want to Fix 12/22/2022

The two giant retailers do something that most shoppers hate that they could easily change.

Retailers and restaurants love to push work off on consumers under the guise that it's somehow better for them. It's like when you order a bagel and a cup of coffee at Panera Bread and you get handled, a blank bagel, frozen butter or cream cheese packets, and an empty coffee cup.

The eatery frames that as allowing you to customize your order. In reality, it's just Panera skimping on labor and making you do things that restaurants usually do for you.

Self-checkout is the same principle. If Target (TGT) - Get Free Report or Walmart WMT offers a few stations where people in a hurry can opt to check themselves out, that's very different than replacing your cashiers with automated checkout stations. That's not about convenience, it's about saving money.

Theft Is a Symptom, Not the Real Self-Checkout Problem

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon recently gave an interview where he blamed self-checkout for an increase in "shrink," which is retail code for theft. Realistically, tighter economic times likely also have lead to increased shoplifting but self-checkout practically begs customers to steal. It's very easy to not scan an item (on purpose or by accident) and customers who are strapped for cash could easily be tempted to help themselves to a few items. Complete article

‘You can’t feed the kids how the f*ck we supposed to feed them’: Walmart customer calls out abortion bans after store is sold out of baby formula 12/31/2022

“I just know this ain’t the same country that’s trying to ban abortions and make people have kids,” she says in the video. “How? You can’t feed the kids. How the fuck we supposed to feed them?”

In the caption, she adds, “America really is a 3rd world country with a gucci belt on.” Complete article
