Walmart Crime Report November 2018

There was a well publicized mall shooting in Alabama where the police shot the wrong person; however the national media didn't cover another Alabama shooting just a couple days earlier at Walmart where two police were injured before killing the suspect, who had already killed a kidnapping victim before shooting at the police. This was one of at least thirteen shootings at Walmart this month including a murder suicide, and two more that resulted in one death each for a total of six deaths from the shootings. This article was originally reported with only twelve shootings; however, there was a thirteenth one at the end of the month which wasn't reported in the news until three weeks later. This is getting more common and will be mentioned in a little more detail in the December crime watch which had several similar incidents. Only one of these shootings, the murder suicide, got any national coverage that I saw on Cable news, and it was very brief, although others could have easily been missed if the coverage was just as brief. One of the shootings involved someone that shot himself accidentally in the groin, which got coverage from plenty of local papers around the country but not the national media.

There was also a follow up report on the cause of death for someone found in a Florida parking lot which turned out to be a shooting, although they didn't mention it in the initial reports. This means that last months shooting count was at least seven instead of six, and it's one of several subtle signs that they might be under pressure not to report on all the details of some of Walmart's crime problems. It indicates that whether there's an intentional effort to downplay major crimes the listings her, even for the biggest crimes, like shootings, might not be complete.

A relatively quick search turned up several more shootings in Alabama that are almost as dramatic if not more dramatic than the one in the mall, including one at a McDonald's. Alabama has one of the highest murder rates in the country, yet the media doesn't try to report on that any more than they report on the high crime problems at Walmart. There's plenty of research in the academic world to show that states that use corporal punishment like Alabama and Louisiana routinely make it into the top ten for murder rates, although this research is rarely if ever mentioned in the mainstream media so it could impact policy.

I also dis a relatively quick check for shootings at other chain stores or fast foo restaurants including Kmart, Target, McDonald's, and Burger King, and found less than half the shootings in all four combined compared to Walmart. This isn't a thorough statistical review, and Walmart does more business than any of them; however, they do more business than Walmart if you count them all together, and it's a reasonably good assumption that Walmart has more crime problems, especially when considering the studies listed below that compare them to other department stores.

There were at least an additional three deaths on the property, including one by a heart attack during Black Friday shopping, another was a worker who was attacked before work then died for related reasons while working, and a body found in the pond nearby one store, which makes it at least nine dead for one reason or another counting the shooting deaths. Walmart had at least a dozen more gun related crimes, mostly robberies, including at least one or two carjackings or attempted carjackings, and several panics, although at least a couple were from BB guns or fake guns but the panics were real, including one hostage situation which led to a lock-down.

At least one more cities reported on how they have more crime problems at Walmart than another store; and Raytown Missouri refinanced their loans that they used to offer Walmart a tax incentive to come to their town, with recent coverage referring to this as "saving" money. However what they didn't remind people, was that they had to lay off police because of the massive crime problems they had at that store, nor did they remind the public of the history behind this tax deal, which despite some claims that they "broke even" turned into one of the worst subsidies for a massive profitable corporation that left local communities with the bill, and these local communities are no longer collecting taxes from the businesses that Walmart destroyed, virtually guaranteeing that it's actually a massive loss for the communities.

Instead of recognizing the causes of their growing crime problem, like self-check-out, cutting staff inviting more crime, union busting leading to bad service angering both customers and workers, and reversing them Walmart is increasing their reliance on "Lot Cop" surveillance cameras spying on everyone on their property or near it, contributing to the surveillance state.

And yet, with all their surveillance, it's often social media that reports many of the brawls, especially during the holiday seasons that take place. Police responded to one brawl early in the month after it was reported on Facebook, and it's unclear from media reports whether Walmart ever even called them; and police said that victims would have to file a complaint if they wanted them to do anything since everyone involved was long gone before they checked on it. There were at least a three or four more videos during Black Friday from shoppers fighting over merchandise, in some cases when there's plenty to go around. This goes on every year, and in the past there have even been reports of management telling people they can't video it, although it's been a few years since that happened, presumably because telling people that is even worse than allowing the video and trying not to draw attention to it.

Walmart is facing several lawsuits because of their negligence in their crime problems, and now there's a new study saying that Walmart and fast food restaurants pose a high risk to pedestrians as a result of auto accidents, compared to schools, churches and other small businesses, even bars; but there's little about this in most mainstream media.

Walmart had at least eight to ten major accidents or chases including at least two crashes into the store. they had at least three or four knife attacks, and three fires, including at least one arson, although investigation may show the others were also set intentionally. There were also numerous assaults including a bodyslaming of a ninety-one year old, attacks on little girls and a break in with an ax to the store next to Walmart.

Walmart asked for their money back from Cindy Hyde-Smith because of her racial comments; however they donated it after the comments were made public. Most newspapers don't report this but if they didn't know about the comments it was because they didn't want to. Even if there wasn't a massive media outrage over these comments about supporting voter suppression or being in the front row of a hanging, Walmart has been in the deep south since they began and if they were concerned that many of the politicians they support are racists, then they could have acted differently long ago; however their own constant legal battles about racial or other human rights issues clearly indicates their "inclusive" policies are only for public relations purposes.

They botched their demand that evacuees from the California fires like they botched everything else, telling people to leave then denying it was their idea while refusing to provide an invitation reversing the demand. Their denials are almost never credible.

Walmart is making a massive increase in their use of high tech in their business over the past few years, which includes deals with Microsoft, Google and other high tech companies. This includes possible attempt to start driverless deliveries, Artificial Intelligence, a tracking system to trace their food so they can find out where e-coli or salmonella are coming from, and a surprising amount of control of the health care industry. Their alleged solution to food poison ignores that many of these problems didn't exist or weren't nearly as bad before we had centralized control of the agriculture industry. Small local farms would solve an enormous amount of this problem, yet it isn't even being considered.

About twenty years ago Colonel Philip Corso said that he shared technology obtained from a crash at Roswell and other UFO sites with multinational corporations, which I went into more on Who's Controlling Oligarchies Dividing The Market? Aliens? A reasonable amount of skepticism of this claim is advisable, however; whether it's partly true or not, advanced technology is being controlled by a small number of oligarchies and they're using their money and political connections to corrupt the political system and consolidates into a small number of oligarchs regardless of the source for rapidly advancing technology. There's an enormous amount of evidence from credible sources that indicates that this technology is being used primarily for the benefit of the few without informing the vast majority of the public how it's being used.

You don't have to believe in aliens to be highly skeptical of allowing Walmart to have increased control of our health care system along with the rest of the economy!

Walmart had more wild life showing up at their stores, including Opossums deer running wild through the store, and a baby alligator that the police said they were going to "trespass" and warn not to come back; this is only lasting for one year, when if the alligator does come back he'll be much bigger. Not my idea.

If you want to harass customers and get away with shoplifting on camera I guess you have to be a famous comedian, like James Corden, who apparently was allowed to get away with things the rest of us could never do without getting arrested; and, just in case you wind up getting a ticket for a traffic violation it's unlikely that you'll get away with calling in a bomb threat to Walmart, while the police officer is calling it in.

One of Walmart's warehouses seemed like a good place to park for a pilot making an emergency landing, just in case you're interested.

But it probably wasn't God that was arrested for shoplifting in Wisconsin despite his claims to the contrary, and the Kentucky shoppers watching a drunken man on the scooter probably weren't the "devil," as he claimed either.

And the man making strange animal noises in Iowa waving a running chainsaw over his head probably wasn't "leatherface" from the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and he didn't kill anyone but I wouldn't be surprised if someone thinks he should be treated by a psychiatrist before releasing him.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2018. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

James Corden Shoplifts Halloween Candy While Taking Over Walmart to Harass Customers and Employees 11/01/2018

We're pretty sure James Corden would get fired from Walmart if he wasn't a famous late-night comedian.

The "Late Late Show" host took over one of superstores in Los Angeles during one of his regular "Take A Break" segments, and ended up destroying a few signs, stands, a melon and a bag of Halloween candy, which he slickly shoplifted on camera.

"Oh my God. This one just broke," he exclaimed to his supervisor after he distracted her long enough to rip open a bag of Twix and let the candy bars spill to the floor. When his temporary co-worker said they just had to pick them up and take them all to claims, he slipped a handful in his pocket. Complete article

A man was shot and killed Monday around 6 p.m. in the Walmart on Bryton Town Center Drive in Huntersville, police said.

Multi-person brawl breaks out in Norfolk Va. Walmart, fight caught on camera 11/06/2018

NORFOLK, Va. - A Facebook video is being investigated by Norfolk Police after they got a call for service Monday night at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Princess Anne.

Police say no charges have been filed because the scene was clear when officers arrived. They tell News 3 the parties involved would have to take out charges against each other or there would have had to be reported injuries. Right now police do not have those elements in this case.

It appears a large group gathers in freezer aisle, words are exchanged and then a fight breaks out between two men and two women.

Other people are present watching and at a few points Walmart employees try to separate the fighting individuals.

The video posted to Facebook has been shared hundreds of times and commented on.

Many people News 3 spoke to, who shop at that Walmart, said they are happy it was blows and not shots during this fight.

Police encourage anyone who sees a fight like this to call 911 immediately. Complete article

That’s about the amount of food, 72 billion pounds, that ends up in landfills and incinerators each year, and more food sellers are trying to find ways to stop it. It’s a matter of good business as much as good citizenry: nearly 40% of the food wasted in the U.S. is thrown out by consumers, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, and when it goes to waste so does the water, soil and fertilizer — not to speak of labor — that went into producing it.

There’s a legitimate profit potential for reducing food waste. Complete article (The profit incentive for reducing waste is almost certainly false, since the expense of waste is generally considered a negative externality which corporations are practically never held accountable for.)

NORTH ADAMS — An Adams resident is facing assault charges for allegedly threatening a man with a knife last month at the Walmart in North Adams.

Christian Richardson, 18, of Commercial Street, allegedly used a knife from a store shelf to provoke a fight shortly after 4:30 p.m. Oct. 2. The man told police Richardson had threatened him in the past.

Security footage shows Richardson lunge at the man once with the knife and again after dropping the knife, according to the criminal complaint filed by North Adams Police Officer Kevin Stant.

A witness, who was in line at the register, told police he tried to shield his children from Richardson.

Security footage showed bystanders under duress and fleeing from the area, the report said.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Spokane Valley Sexual Assault Detectives are investigating reports of a man following, grabbing and taking video of young girls at stores. Investigators believe there are potential victims who have not yet reported this activity to police and are encouraging potential victims to come forward.

On Monday, Spokane Valley Sheriff's Detective Kevin Richey began following up on reports of a strange man who had reportedly been following, recording and in some instances, grabbing young females at the Spokane Valley Wal-Mart located at 15727 E. Broadway in Spokane Valley.

One of the reported incidents happened on November 1, where the suspect approached a 12-year-old girl and her sister as they were looking at toys. The man, later identified as 29-year-old Michael A. Walmart passes Amazon as world’s largest online grocer 11/06/2018

Look out, Amazon: Walmart is coming to steal your lunch – and maybe dinner too.

The world’s largest retailer has surpassed the e-commerce giant in a survey of online food shoppers, more of whom said they most recently visited Walmart’s site for groceries. Local supermarkets were in third place, fueled in part by logistics provider Instacart, which handles orders for grocers like Kroger Co. and many others.

Walmart has moved ahead thanks to the rapid deployment of its curbside grocery pickup service, which is now in about 2,000 stores. An additional 1,000 will come on board by the end of 2019, the company said at a recent investor conference. Walmart also works with delivery services like DoorDash and Deliv to bring groceries to customers’ homes for a fee. Amazon, meanwhile, offers grocery delivery from Whole Foods Market stores for its Prime customers in 60 cities, with in-store pickup now available in 10. Complete article

Woman accused of calling in bomb threat to Ill. WalMart in hopes of ending traffic stop 11/06/2018

COLLINSVILLE, IL – Collinsville police believe that a woman called in a bomb threat to a WalMart store in hopes of ending a traffic stop. Around 3:20am on Monday, November 5, 2018, officers pulled over a truck with a man and woman inside on the southbound entrance ramp to I-55 from N. Bluff Rd. The man is identified at Max W. Vance, 37, and the woman as Shelly L. Fritch, 32.

While the officers were doing paperwork and background checks during the traffic stop, a woman called the Collinsville Police Department non-emergency line and indicated that she had left a bomb at the Collinsville WalMart, generating a heavy police response.

Information gathered during the traffic stop led police to conduct a search of the pickup truck, which revealed two illegally possessed firearms. Vance, who is a convicted felon, was arrested. Fritch was released from the scene along with the truck. Those officers then responded to the WalMart scene.

Follow up investigation led police to believe the bomb threat was likely called in by Fritch while the officers who made the stop were doing paperwork in the cruiser. They claim she was hoping to divert the officer’s attention. They do not believe that Wal-Mart was ever in any danger. Complete article

Off The Beat: Alligator 'trespassing' at Walmart nabbed by Port St. Lucie Fla. cops 11/07/2018

PORT ST. LUCIE — An unwelcome visitor, who likely had a painfully toothy grin, was escorted out of Walmart Tuesday with a trespass warning, according to Port St. Lucie police.

Instead of a shady ne’er-do-well drifter, the 3:17 a.m. visitor to the business in the 10800 block of South U.S. 1 was a 1.5-foot alligator.

“He wandered into the employee break area,” said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, Port St. Lucie police spokesman.

Employees called police, and Officer Michael Connor got to the scene.

“He scooped him up and escorted him off the property,” Sabol said in a tongue-in-cheek interview. “Gave him a trespass warning,”

Sabol said the trespass warning is valid for a year.

“If he comes back in a year he’ll be much bigger, so we’ll be on the lookout for him,” Sabol said. “We’ll be on high alert.” Complete article

Trump’s tax cuts will help the Walton family more than Walmart workers 11/08/2018

A study suggests there’s a world of difference between the tax benefits enjoyed by these workers and their employers As some Walmart workers struggle to get by, the company’s owners are thriving.

The Walton family, majority stakeholders of supermarket giant Walmart WMT, +0.29% benefitted from an estimated $6.5 billion in tax breaks on share holdings over the last 16 years, according to a recent analysis from the union-backed group Making Change at Walmart. These tax cuts, available to all businesses with such significant assets, works out at an average of $1.1 million per day in savings.

The researchers estimated the total value of dividend income received by the Walton family from 2003 through 2018. Secondly, they added the total shares held by Walton Enterprises LLC with the shares of the Walton Family Holdings Trust, as reported in the SEC filings for each year. They then applied the tax cuts introduced by various presidencies over that time. Thirdly, they compared two scenarios: tax cuts and no tax cuts between 2003 and 2018.

Their conclusion: Tax reforms passed by Congress during the Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations since 2003 have resulted in billions of dollars in lower tax rates on dividends for the Walton family and other stock owners. This began with President George W. Bush signing the Jobs Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003. Complete article

Purse-snatcher body-slams Florida woman, 91, in Walmart parking lot 11/09/2018

Mary Kennedy had plans to watch the Miami Dolphins game but the 91-year-old fan found herself trying to tackle a purse snatching suspect instead.

Gilberto Garcia, 35, of West Palm Beach, had approached her about 9 a.m. Sunday as she got into her car outside the Walmart at 4375 Belvedere Road and he told her there was a nail in her tire, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

When Kennedy got out to look, Garcia grabbed her purse from the front seat of her car and got into his red Ford Explorer, an arrest report said.

Kennedy told WPTV-Ch.5 she went over and tried to get her purse back but Garcia pushed her to the parking lot pavement injuring her head, left arm and hip.

“He body-slammed me down to the concrete,” she told the station. “That was it. That was all I knew. I couldn’t get up.”

Garcia drove away, but two witnesses took pictures of his license plate and Walmart security cameras also recorded the incident.

Detectives checked license plate records and they showed Garcia was the registered owner of the Explorer. Meanwhile, a deputy spotted the SUV about 10:30 a.m. and followed it until Garcia parked at 2000 N. Congress Ave.

Garcia was held until Kennedy was brought to the scene so she could identify him as her attacker, the report stated.

Then, reluctantly, she went to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

“I wanted to see the Dolphins game,” she told WPTV. “I waited all week for that.”

During questioning, Garcia admitted to taking Kennedy’s purse, stealing the contents, and throwing the purse in the trash at a Chevron gas station where deputies later found it. They processed it for evidence and returned it to Kennedy, detectives said.

Garcia is facing robbery, burglary and aggravated battery charges with bond set at $110,000, records showed. Complete article

Walmart is building an AI lab inside one of its NY stores 11/08/2018

Walmart has just announced its plans to launch what it’s calling an Intelligent Retail Lab inside one of its stores in Levittown, New York.

The idea is to test both associate and customer experiences. For example, Walmart wants to use artificial intelligence to better identify when items are running low on stock so that it can proactively replenish the stock. Led by an internal team called Kepler, Walmart also envisions using the technology to identify spills, better understand when shopping carts are running low near the entrance and identify when items are on the wrong shelf.

Tech publications, including this one, had previously reported that Project Kepler would entail cashierless stores. Instead, Walmart says Kepler is the name of the team building the AI lab inside the working Walmart store in Levittown. However, Walmart says scanless checkout is an option the store is capable of testing down the road. Complete article

Canada Walmart ramps up self-checkout, scales down 'scan and go' shopping 11/10/2018

In the race to woo customers with a seamless shopping experience, Walmart Canada is adding more self-checkout kiosks and revamping its "scan and go" system where shoppers scan their items while they shop.

It appears "scan and go," in its current form, wasn't a "go" for many customers.

Physical retailers are scrambling to make shopping more convenient while also trying to keep costs down in an era where almost anything can be bought online. But it's a game of trial and error where customers won't always buy in. Complete article

The killing of a man inside a Target store occurred after the victim and others allegedly chased someone while wielding a "large knife," police say.

Former Walmart CEO says Amazon is “Predatory” Almost by Definition 11/13/2018

Former Walmart CEO Bill Simon says that Amazon has been “predatory” by selling goods below cost subsidized by profits from their cloud and advertising businesses. Simon says that this strategy put major competitors like Circuit City and Toys R Us out of business allowing Walmart to then raise the price of Prime without losing their customers.

Bill Simon, a former Walmart CEO, discussed Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba in an interview on Fox Business which can be watched below:

Amazon Behavior Has Been Predatory by Definition

I’ve not been an advocate of breaking Amazon up. I’ve been an advocate of really looking at them hard and maybe having them report more details in segment reporting.

They just sort of smush everything up into one number and report and I don’t think that gives clarity to the investor. If you really think about it their behavior has been predatory almost by definition. In 2014 they took the price of Prime up right after Circuit City and some others went out of business. They took another price increase to $129 for Prime and Toys R Us is gone.

The consumer loves them, it’s awesome, I use them all the time, it’s really great to have the stuff delivered. But you see them putting people out of business and raising their price, and then again putting people out of business and raising their price, and that’s just not right. Complete article

Walmart to give military spouses a hiring preference 11/12/2018

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Walmart announced it will give military spouses a preferential hiring status starting November 12, 2018.

Walmart, Ford Motor team up to test driverless delivery technology 11/14/2018

Ford Motor Co. is partnering with Walmart to test home delivery services in early 2019, an effort to learn consumer expectations that will shape development of new driverless vehicle technology, the Dearborn-based automaker announced Wednesday.

While the initial partnership between the two retail giants is underway now, actual delivery of Walmart customer goods in Florida's Miami-Dade County won't begin until next year.

Ford plans to use drivers to deliver purchased goods to Walmart shoppers who will have no interaction with the drivers. The customer experiences — designed to mimic driverless delivery — will provide Ford a better understanding of what customers want as Ford technology teams develop robot cars to eventually deliver goods.

"When you order online or with the Walmart app, it will thank you for your order and ask if you would be interested in participating in the project," explained Alan Hall, communications manager for Ford AV LLC. "These are random customers helping us develop our autonomous pilot project." Complete article

Bernie Sanders wants Walmart to raise worker wages 11/13/2018

Sanders plans to unveil the 'Stop Walmart Act'

(CNN) - First Amazon. Now Walmart.

Senator Bernie Sanders plans to unveil legislation on Thursday titled The Stop Walmart Act, aimed at raising wages at the retail giant. Walmart, along with Amazon, American Airlines and several other large companies, have drawn Sanders' ire because he says they don't pay workers a living wage.

Sanders points out that the Walton family, heirs to Walmart's founder and one of the richest families in the US, have seen their wealth grow. The company earned $13 billion in profits last year, while the median worker is paid just over $19,000 a year.

Walmart, the nation's largest private-sector employer, has long been the target of community advocates, who say it skimps on wages and benefits. The company raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour in February and gave workers a one-time bonus of up to $1,000 in the wake of the Republican tax cut. Complete article

Walmart calls Columbia SC police nine times a day. You pay the bill 11/14/2018

COLUMBIA, SC Police come to arrest the person accused of stealing a $2 ChapStick and investigate the theft of $10 sunglasses. They’re asked to settle domestic spats, break up parking lot disputes and remove disorderly drunks.

These calls to police — thousands of which are made each year — chew up hours of the Columbia Police Department’s time. And they all start at Walmart.

Four Walmart locations rely on Columbia police more than any other establishment in the city, according to The State’s review of CPD crime data from 2014 to present. The big-box retailer generated far more calls to police compared to much larger shopping centers such as Columbiana Centre, which is home to more than 100 stores, and other comparable retailers like Target.

Last year alone, Columbia police responded to a Walmart, on average, nine times a day. That’s one call every three hours.

And taxpayers are settling the bill.

“Walmart looks at security as an expense,” said Burt Flickinger, a leading retail consultant based in New York. “They outsource that cost to the taxpayer.” Complete article

To Curb Wasteful Health Spending, Walmart to Send Employees Traveling for Spine Surgery 11/14/2018

Walmart Inc. said it will require its employees to use certain hospitals for costly spine surgeries, an effort to weed out unnecessary procedures and lower its health-care spending.

The retailer has been trying since 2013 to encourage employees to undergo the surgeries at hospital systems known for their quality by offering to pay the full cost of the procedures and travel. But not all workers took Walmart up on the offer, and the retailer continued to pay for surgery elsewhere. Complete article

Bernie Sanders Dangles a New Incentive to Get Walmart to Pay $15 Minimum Wage: Stock Buybacks 11/15/2018

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders is announcing a bill on Thursday that would force big companies to pay their lowest-earning workers before shareholders. The details echo his campaign to get Amazon to pay its workers at least $15 an hour, but this time the main target is Walmart, the Washington Post reports.

The new legislation, dubbed the “Stop Walmart Act,” would incentivize corporations to pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour, provide workers seven days of sick leave, and cap CEO compensation at 150 times the median employee pay by barring stock buybacks among firms that fail to meet those criteria. A company’s repurchasing of its own shares is a practice that benefits shareholders.

“Amazon did the right thing by raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour. Walmart can and must do the same,” Sanders told the Post. Complete article

Fire evacuees staying inside a growing tent city in Chico’s Walmart parking lot are being told they will soon have to move.

“This site will be CLOSING Sunday at 1 p.m.,” read a pink hand-written sign near the parking lot entrance Thursday. “Transportation can and will be provided to those in need ... We want you warm and safe. Please ask about shelter info.”

The sign was placed at the site by local volunteers, and Butte County officials will start moving people Friday to the Butte County Fairgrounds in Gridley, where they can stay in an indoor shelter run by the American Red Cross, said Casey Hatcher, a county spokeswoman.

“We’re going to transition people to be inside and warm where they can get the services they deserve,” she said.

Walmart did not approach the county about moving people, Hatcher said.

Walmart manager Demarcus Montgomery, who works at the Chico store, referred questions to Walmart’s national media relations office. Walmart did not respond to multiple calls and emails.

The prospect of leaving the unsanctioned encampment caused consternation for some who have been staying there since fleeing the Camp Fire a week ago. Some said they had not heard about the county’s plans for relocation, and only heard they had to go. Complete article

Here’s de Blasio’s logic for loving Amazon — but hating Walmart 11/16/2018

Amazon is “part of the American economy” and welcome in the Big Apple — but Walmart is an evil job-killer that should never be allowed to open within the five boroughs, Mayor de Blasio said Friday.

De Blasio has been attacking Walmart for years, claiming it pays shoddy wages, is anti-union and and would undercut New York City’s iconic retail brands.

But he’s primed with pride over landing Amazon’s headquarters expansion, despite the online giant’s similar reputation for cutthroat business tactics. Complete article

How Walmart is betting on Microsoft's AI technology to take on Amazon 11/14/2018

Walmart plans to use Microsoft's artificial-intelligence technology to improve customer experience in stores and online. Walmart is partnering with Microsoft to use artificial-intelligence technology for the retail giant's e-commerce site, price adjustments, and expanding its online grocery program.

Walmart also uses robots in 50 of its stores to scan shelves for missing items; it plans to use artificial intelligence to improve these robots.

Walmart is experimenting with voice commerce to be used on voice assistants like the Google Home, and it believes its partnership with Microsoft will help this take off.

Walmart and Microsoft have shared more details on their plans to team up and take on their mutual rivals at Amazon.

"We want to be the world's most trusted retailer," Fiona Tan, the senior vice president of customer technology and artificial intelligence at Walmart, said at a Microsoft event held this week.

At the event, Tan discussed how a Microsoft-Walmart engineering team would migrate the retailer's internal business applications to the Microsoft Azure cloud. She also announced plans to use Microsoft's AI technology in ways meant to improve online and in-store shopping.

Walmart fiercely competes with Amazon for dominance in the retail sector, while Microsoft Azure is generally seen as the greatest rival to the market-leading Amazon Web Services cloud.

Tan said Walmart considered multiple options for AI technology but chose Azure because of Microsoft's track record in the field of AI.

"They had a good amount of research," Tan said. "We've always had a good strong partnership with Microsoft. They have a lot of good tools. It's a good fit."

Walmart plans to use Microsoft's AI technology to help with product search and recommendations on its recently revamped website. That tech could help Walmart provide more relevant recommendations to its customers on its site and improve customer experience, Tan said. It also wants to use AI to help scale its online grocery program and predict which groceries customers want to order.

With AI, Walmart can also figure out the best models to price an item, especially seasonal items, Tan said. Throughout the year, prices vary by location and availability, but AI can create models that predict these changes.

It's not just about pricing and online shopping though. Walmart plans to use Microsoft tech to improve one of its must futuristic initiatives: a robot that moves up and down the aisles to scan the shelves. The robot can recognize when people misplace items and alert associates to put the items on the right shelf.

With the robot also counting items on the shelves and making sure they're in stock, the human associates can focus on helping customers.

"Our associates can spend more time doing what they like to do, which is to sell products," Tan said. "These are the kinds of things to allow them to have time to interact with our customers."

Walmart is also looking into voice commerce, which can be used in conjunction with assistants like the Google Home, Tan says. For example, a customer can tell a voice assistant to add milk to a shopping cart. This is in beta.

The robot is already being used in about 50 Walmart stores across the US, and Walmart plans to leverage Microsoft's AI technology to improve these bots. Complete article

'They Obviously Can Afford to': Workers Call On Walmart To Raise Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour 11/19/2018

As the Walton Family continues amassing greater wealth from Walmart’s success, employees at Walmart retail stores struggle with poverty, low wages, and larger workloads due to understaffing.

The World’s largest retailer, Walmart, is far behind its competitors when it comes to a minimum wage; Amazon announced an increase to $15 an hour in October 2018, Target is scheduled to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020, and Costco already pays a minimum wage of $14 an hour. With a minimum wage of $11 an hour, Walmart workers are calling on the giant retailer to raise the company minimum wage to $15 an hour.

“Walmart should pay us $15 an hour because they obviously can afford to and the amount of work they are having us do is every bit worth $15 an hour,” Cierra Harrington, a Walmart associate in New Bern, North Carolina who has worked at the retailer for five years, told me. She makes $11.50 an hour.

Despite working at Walmart for five years, Harrington is one of more than 500,000 Walmart employees kept under part-time classification as a cost-saving measure; Walmart’s full-time U.S. workers have decreased from 80 percent in 2005 to an estimated 50 percent in 2018. “I would be in a much more stable living situation if I was making $15 an hour,” Harrington added. “I wouldn't have to choose between paying late on the rent to pay the light bill or vice versa, or having to be on food stamps to be able to put food on the table for me and my child.” Complete article

After lynching comments, Walmart donates to Cindy Hyde-Smith 11/19/2018

UPDATE (11/20): Walmart announced it will seek a refund of all its contributions to Hyde-Smith. The company tells Popular Information it was not aware of her “public hanging” comments at the time of its donation.

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) has still not apologized for comments earlier this month where she expressed a willingness to attend a lynching. "If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row," Hyde-Smith said to a small crowd on November 2.

Hyde-Smith’s remarks hasn’t dissuaded Walmart from contributing to her campaign. She faces Democrat Mike Espy in a runoff election on November 27, and an FEC filing on Monday revealed that Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, has contributed $2000 to the effort.

The contribution is dated November 18, about a week after Hyde’s lynching comments became public. It stands in contrast to the language about diversity and inclusion that Walmart touts in its corporate literature. Complete article

Airplane makes emergency landing on Ga. highway, pulls into Ga. Walmart warehouse parking lot 11/20/2018

It was a sight motorists probably weren't expecting.

CORRECTION: A previous version of the story misidentified where the airplane pulled off the roadway. It actually pulled into a Walmart warehouse parking lot near the regional airport.

A pilot is uninjured after making an emergency landing on a metro Atlanta road - and maneuvering into a warehouse parking lot.

Motorists in Carroll County may have been surprised to see an aircraft coming in for a landing on the highway. However, it appears the person at the controls had little choice.

According to Carroll County Sheriff's Office Captain Jeff Richards, his office was called to the area of Highway 27 North near the West Georgia Regional Airport to where the plane came down.

Richards said the airplane made a successful landing in the roadway then maneuvered into the front of the warehouse. It's still unclear why the pilot was forced to make the landing in the first place. Complete article

Study: Walmart, Fast Food Sites Pose High Risk to Pedestrians 11/20/2018

Saving a few bucks may cost you your life.

Walmarts, fast food restaurants and discount stores like Family Dollar are hot spots for pedestrian crashes, a new study shows.

Building on existing evidence that low-income neighborhoods are more dangerous for walkers, the new study by the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida [PDF] found that certain kinds of retail stores in low-income areas amplify the danger to pedestrians.

For example, in Florida, Census-designated low-income areas — containing roughly 1,500 residents — with Walmarts had 1.8 more pedestrian crashes over a four-year period on average than low-income areas without.

For each fast food restaurant in a low-income block group, there was an addition 0.69 pedestrian crashes every four years on average. Fast-food joints such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Taco Bell were also associated with an increased risk of severe injuries. .....

There was no additional risk associated with schools, churches, bars or hotels, the study found. Complete article

A Wage Justice Strategy: Will Sanders Bill Lead Walmart to Raise Its Base Pay? 11/2/2018

Last Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) introduced a bill that, as Jeff Stein details in the Washington Post, encourages large employers to raise worker wages to $15 an hour. The legislation, Stein writes, “would bar big corporations from buying their own stock—a move that rewards shareholders—unless they pay all employees $15 an hour, provide them seven days of sick leave, and prevent CEO compensation from rising more than 150 times above median employee pay.” The full text of the proposed legislation is available here, and the senator’s office also offers a one-page summary.

In case it wasn’t clear who was being targeted, the bill’s “Stop Walmart Act” name kind of gives it away. For those interested in such things—there’s an art in coming up with these acronyms, after all—the bill’s official name is the Stop Welfare for Any Large Monopoly Amassing Revenue from Taxpayers Act. (The earlier Bezos bill similarly had a long-form name of the “Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies Act.)

In a statement, Sanders points out that the Walton family is the richest in America, with an estimated net worth of about $180 billion. The Walton family still owns roughly half the company’s stock. Meanwhile, the starting wage for a Walmart employee is $11 an hour. Sanders in his statement introducing the bill also mentions that, “Since 1982, the wealth of the Walton family has increased about 10,000 percent, and the family now owns more wealth than the bottom 40 percent of Americans. Meanwhile, 55 percent of Walmart’s associates are food insecure.” Complete article

Mental health therapy at Walmart? It's now a thing 11/26/2018

A Boston company is taking the concept of retail health care to a new level & offering mental health treatment in a Walmart.

Beacon Health Options, which manages mental health care for 40 million people, has opened a small clinic in the discount department store in Carrollton, Texas. The company plans to roll out the program in other retail locations nationwide, with the goal of increasing access to mental health care.

Beacon has no immediate plans for a Massachusetts location. Local providers told of the plans for retail clinics expressed skepticism, asserting that Beacon could accomplish the same goal by working more effectively with its current network of providers.

But Beacon officials portray the retail clinic program as an effort to bring mental health services to underserved areas, in a way that will make it easy and comfortable to seek help.

Staffed for now with one licensed clinical social worker, the clinic offers treatment for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and the stresses of everyday living. Patients can walk in to request an appointment or sign up online or over the phone. Complete article

The FDA thinks Walmart may have one solution to romaine lettuce recalls 11/27/2018

Tracking food faster could speed up recalls, but it won't stop contamination from happening.

Twice now this year, federal health officials have warned Americans not to eat any romaine lettuce at all, and asked stores to throw away all their supplies.

It wasn’t because all the romaine lettuce in the country was contaminated. It was because there was no good way to figure out quickly where the contaminated lettuce was coming from. When people started dying from E. coli infections last spring, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided the safest bet was just to tell people to stop eating it.

It took weeks to narrow down the spring outbreak to Yuma, Arizona. It took several days to trace this fall’s outbreak to central California. In a best-case scenario, the moment someone got sick, it would have been possible to figure out what they ate and where it came from, so that specific farm or processor or distributor could be shut down.
