Walmart Crime Report November 2024

Walmart had another fifteen shootings in November 2024, including five fatal shootings killing one person each. This also includes two fatal shootings in NC Walmart parking lots that were less than two hours apart, later in the month North Carolina had two more shootings, including a third fatal one; and on one day there were three shootings no more than six hours apart, although none were fatal. At least one of those killed in shootings was a Walmart employee, and another was a suspected shoplifter killed by police.

It's unclear why the police officer intervened in a shoplifting, since she was a school resource officer off-duty not on normal duties, but she allegedly was dragged into a car before shooting the suspect, and is now being investigated for possible inappropriate procedures. Most if not all the other deaths resulted in murder charges. There were at least three more injuries as a result of shootings, including one more employee.

There are also a growing number of memorials for Walmart shootings, which could easily get much more common. The El Paso had memorials since it happened, which isn't surprising since it's almost certainly the biggest mass shooting at any Walmart. Last month there were memorials for both the Mass shooting at Chesapeake, which happened a couple years ago, and a mass shooting at Beavercreek Ohio where the only person killed was the shooter, but at least four were injured; at times there have been memorials for the killing of John Crawford III, at the same store; and this month there's a memorial for a shooting ten years ago in Arizona, which also included a brawl and a cop was shot. If they had memorials for every shooting there would be well over a hundred every month, if they had them for only fatal shootings there would still be dozens every month, or for multiple deaths it wouldn't take long for them to grow over a dozen per month, it there aren't enough on record yet.

In addition to the shootings with traditional firearms, there was another person accused of shooting arrows at a Texas Walmart. There were also at least half a dozen other gun related crimes, probably more, including robberies, domestic flights, including one where a person was hit with a firearm, not shot, and ammunition or possession of guns while shoplifting or committing other crimes.

In addition to the five dead from shootings there were three bodies found on the premises, most if not all that aren't considered suspicious, and one person killed in a crash into a storage area, for a total of nine dead, not counting people caught in a deadly E Coli outbreak which was related to Walmart sales, but it's unclear how many died, or if some were directly related to Walmart. There was also an update to a death of a teenager that was burnt to death in one of their walk in ovens, and the police say it's not a result of foul play without providing much if any more details. Many people will find it hard to believe, since numerous workers claimed there was no way it could happen by accident, and neither Walmart of the police explained their concerns that I know of.

Most crime reports seem to be dropping significantly compared to previous years; however appearances are deceiving. As I reported last month advertisements thinly disguised as news reports are flooding online news pushing other real news off most feeds, but there's little or no chance that crime has dropped that much, and it may even continue to rise, but there's good reason to believe that this just means media outlets and search engines are just making crime reports harder to find, and it's impossible to know how much crime is going up or down without more reliable reports. If crime were going down there would have to be an explanation for it, but there's no effort to report on the leading causes of crime and reduce them, so there's little chance that there's a large drop in crime, just reporting on it, which is more likely to accompany an increase in crime than a decrease, but this can't be hidden indefinitely.

There have still been plenty of attacks, fights burglaries, kidnapping, rape or other sexual assault cases, assaults on police and Walmart workers, and much more shoplifting than the media could ever report even if they were still trying to report most crime. Some things are clearly continuing to rise, including the increased number of skimming devices used to steal customer data, which is now reported every month, often at several locations, although only one was reported this month. There are also more thefts of debit cards, SNAP cards, credit cards, often accompanied by efforts to access PIN numbers. Some Walmart employees were also caught stealing after being hired by organized efforts to steal, and presumably fence certain products.

Walmart is now using an increased amount of high tech devices to catch people steal even small amounts and are even going after people that stole months if not years ago, often reviewing security tapes for past purchases to find skip scanning if people pay with electronic devices, which can be traced, and, in one case, they charged a suspect for self-checkout theft that happened almost three years ago. They're now pushing statute of limitations to the limit, while cutting return policies much lower, even when returning something that is clearly Walmart's fault, without using reasonable discretion at the return counter.

There continue to be a growing number of false accusations and complaints about anti-theft policies, sometimes even when people have receipts for their property. Walmart is trying to try some high tech solutions for problems that were created by corner cutting and other high tech devices, which often only makes it worse. This includes using "a key on your phone" which may be designed to track their own customers, and could create more problems, while refusing to simply revers decisions that caused the problems. There are also many people just walking out leaving carts full of merchandise behind, sometimes even perishables. And, as usual, there are more lawsuits for racial discrimination and more problems.

In addition to the fatal crash into storage containers there were more than half a dozen other crashes, chases, hit and runs and other automobile crimes. There were at least three more fires at stores, and at least one of them was arson. There were also at least four more knife attacks or robberies, including two stabbings, one that was classified as attempted murder. These estimates are minimums and it's virtually guaranteed that even for major crimes the real total is almost certainly higher, perhaps much higher, but it's hard to find all the reports, especially with deteriorating reporting and search engine policies.

Walmart had at least two more recalls last month including one large one for possible E. coli contamination of carrots, which was expanded, and another for bike helmets, which may not be safe; as usual these recalls get little attention, and they often come too late.

A Walmart truck driver falsely accused of fraud was awarded $34.7 million by a jury, but Walmart says they'll do everything they can to reverse this, which is routine for them, and they often succeed, which means they're often not even accountable in civil courts when they do something wrong, or if they settle they only get a slap on the wrist. They're always facing many more lawsuits, including misleading labels, and threats of boycott over their gun policies among other things.

They also announced that they're rolling back their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, and are already facing calls for boycotts. This is virtually guaranteed to lead to many more lawsuits, and indicates they don't care about fairness or civil rights. This is part of a dangerous right wing movement that is chipping away at basic rights and democracy.

Do you think you should be required to go to the WD-40 aisle to lube your own shopping cart? One person did. Do you think someone that does this should be charged with theft for using an already open can of WD-40 and putting it back on the shelf? In one case he reported doing this without getting caught, but Walmart has done worse things.

If you buy a gingerbread man or other lawn decorations do you actually expect the head to come right side up? Think again.

Does your Walmart delivery person deliver their trash, possibly including a urine bottle, along with your groceries? If so, how safe do you consider your groceries?

When a scam artist like Anna Delvey gets caught scamming people as a fake heiress does Walmart have a right to market her products without paying? Anna Delvey doesn't think so and is suing them for trying claiming she trademarked her fake name.

What kind of an economic system literally encourages profiting off of scams even after they're exposed, then spends money on court expenses to decide who should get the loot?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2024. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Say goodbye to these bills – Walmart will no longer accept them in any of its stores as of today 11/03/2024

If you are one of those people who still pay in cash, and above all, who do not look at the bills they pay with… You will have to pay special attention starting this month of October (2024), especially to one-dollar bills.

Walmart has informed its customers that it will no longer accept one-dollar bills that have visible damage on them. With this, they seek to reinforce the security of the country’s monetary system.

Which bills will be rejected at all Walmarts?

Those bills that have tears, cut edges or those that are quite deteriorated as a result of the passage of time or humidity. These will no longer be accepted in stores, banks or ATMs, so if you have any… try to get rid of them as soon as possible.

This decision is driven by a need to modernize monetary systems and also to try to stop the counterfeiting of these bills, so, overall, it responds to a need to improve consumer confidence in the authenticity of the money in circulation.

What will the changes be in the bills?

The country’s monetary system has justified this new policy by arguing that counterfeiting of banknotes is a problem that generates millions of dollars lost practically every year. With this new acceptance standard, and the fact that the design of the banknotes will also be different, the objective will be to make it more difficult for those who produce and distribute counterfeit banknotes.

Of all the changes that will take place, the most notable is the USD 50 bill, which will be updated in 2028, followed by the USD 20 bill, which will undergo changes in 2030.

It is estimated that the USD 5 and USD 100 bills are also waiting their turn to be redesigned soon.

What will change in the bills?

The bills will again include new security features, such as the famous “security threads” with microprinting, 3D bands that will change color as you tilt the bill, and special inks that react under ultraviolet light Complete article

California Mother Files Class Action Against Walmart Over Misleading “Hypoallergenic” Baby Petroleum Jelly Label 11/05/2024

California Mother Files Class Action Against Walmart Over Misleading “Hypoallergenic” Baby Petroleum Jelly Label

A California mother, Lacey Timmins, has launched a class action lawsuit against Walmart, accusing the retail giant of falsely labeling its Parent’s Choice Baby Petroleum Jelly Skin Protectant as “hypoallergenic.” Timmins filed the complaint on October 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, claiming that Walmart’s labeling misrepresents the product and violates both state and federal consumer protection laws.

Timmins contends that the “hypoallergenic” label is misleading due to the presence of fragrance ingredients, which are widely recognized as triggers for allergic contact dermatitis, a common skin condition that impacts millions of Americans. The lawsuit asserts that Walmart uses terms like “hypoallergenic” to establish consumer trust and drive sales, but in doing so, allegedly causes both financial harm and health risks for consumers.

Fragrance and Allergic Reactions: Plaintiff's Allegations

According to Timmins, the American Academy of Dermatology identifies fragrance as a primary cause of allergic contact dermatitis, which is estimated to affect around 2.5 million people in the United States. She highlights that, from 1996 to 2016, incidents related to personal care products increased by nearly 300%, leading to a rise in consumer reliance on labels like “hypoallergenic” for guidance. ‘I work at walmart & this is a daily occurrence’: Woman gets stuck in line behind couple with 2 shopping carts. Then she tries the self-checkout 11/05/2024

A customer says she had such a bad experience at Walmart that she’s sworn off shopping at the store forever.

Chaya (@juulfart) posted a story-time about an “unhinged” Walmart experience that received with 65,000 views on TikTok.

“Get ready with me while I talk about the most insane Walmart experience I’ve literally ever had,” she says.

Chaya explains that she had gone to Walmart to shop for birthday gifts. When she first entered, the customer noticed the store was unusually packed with a long line at each cash register. She then grabbed some toys, spotted what she thought was the shortest queue, and hopped in line to pay.

However, the customer soon learned the reason why her line was so short. At the front was a couple with two overflowing carts.

Chaya wasn’t worried despite the huge mountain of items ahead of her. She noted that the employee was working through carts and scanning products rather quickly. But although there weren’t any complications with the scanning process, payment was another issue entirely.

‘I’m waiting on y’all?’: Spark delivery driver demands answers after Walmart canceled her order 11/02/2024

‘Not Walmart playing with my Spark money.’

A Spark delivery driver is up in arms after she alleged that Walmart canceled her order because she apparently wasn’t parked in the right spot.

“Not Walmart playing with my Spark money,” the driver, Ladii Lanna, wrote in the accompanying text overlay of her video.

In her nearly one-minute clip, Lanna accused Walmart workers of “playing” with her. As of Thursday, her video explaining her predicament had amassed more than 38,600 views.

What happened at Walmart?

Lanna said that she was sitting in her car—a mere 30 feet from Walmart’s pick-up area—when she was waiting to begin her trip. She explained to viewers that Spark drivers can’t hit “start trip” until they’ve arrived at a designated pick-up location.

“You can’t hit ‘start trip’ until the exact time,” Lanna said. After arriving, however, she said that she hit the ‘start trip’ button, moved something into her backseat, and drove over to the bay areas where Spark drivers are meant to wait.

The worker noted here, too, that she was “literally 30 feet away” from Walmart.

However, Lanna said she quickly noticed, via the Spark app, that her order was canceled. She said it only took her a second to figure out that the customer didn’t cancel her order—Walmart had.

Lanna said she spoke to a Walmart manager and asked why they canceled her trip. But she said she was told that her trip got canceled because Lanna apparently didn’t have a “bay listed.” Complete article

Man accused of setting fire at Ohio Walmart, one person injured 11/07/2024

MEDINA, Ohio (WJW) — The Fox 8 I-Team has uncovered a video and a bizarre crime spree, which included an arson fire inside a busy store in Medina County.

Medina Township police department body camera video and pictures show the damage the fire caused at the Walmart Monday morning.

Detective Mike Oyler tells us the suspect, Jeremiah Banto, of Rhode Island, is accused of starting a fire inside the store and then taking off.

Police said Banto took off in a vehicle that he got from a local dealership a short time before he was accused of setting the fire. According to police, Banto had asked to take the car for a test drive and then drove straight to the Walmart.

“It’s that first time that I know of that we had an arson fire at Walmart,” Oyler said. “This happened around 11:30 in the morning and then around 3 in the afternoon, we got a call from police in New York. The car he was driving had run out of gas. One of the troopers ran up and ran the plate and found out the vehicle was stolen. When they confronted him they got in an altercation and he actually tried to steal the trooper’s patrol car.” Complete article

(CBS DETROIT) - A 56-year-old Michigan man with a history of criminal sexual conduct arrests is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Shelby Township Walmart.

Shelby Township police responded to the Walmart at 51450 Shelby Parkway in Shelby Township on Oct. 23 after a woman reported that she had been sexually assaulted. When police arrived, the woman said she saw the man leave the store after her and drive away in a silver Jeep Patriot.

Police eventually located the man, Kirk Rogers, and determined that he had multiple prior arrests for criminal sexual conduct.

"I want to thank the quick work of our officers and the Detective Bureau on locating this disgusting individual," said Shelby Township Police Chief Robert J. Shelide in a statement. "I am pleased that Shelby Township Police was able to get this vile human off the streets before he could offend again. This is a person that has been investigated and arrested multiple times for assaulting young women and must be prevented from doing so again so the residents of Shelby Township can feel safe and protected from this type of monster." MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Riley County police were investigating the theft of shotgun shells after the Walmart store in Manhattan had been burglarized late Thursday.

Walmart Shopper Was Accused Of Stealing By An Employee Even Though She Had A Receipt. – ‘Your actions speak louder than words could ever.’ 11/07/2024

There’s nothing that gets me more upset than when someone accuses me of something I didn’t do.

That’s what happened to a TikTokker named Gustavo and he posted a video to show viewers what went down when he went to his local Walmart to return a fog machine he had purchased.

He told viewers, “I’m here at Walmart, I had the receipt and everything like that. The lady didn’t believe me.”

Gustavo said the woman thought he stole the fog machine because it didn’t have an orange sticker on it.

He added, “The lady before me tried returning something too, but she ain’t need no orange sticker, but I do.”

Gustavo said the worker told him they were going to get someone from the store’s asset protection division to pull up security camera footage to prove he brought the fog machine into the store…even though he had his receipt.

He said, “This is crazy, the lady before me had a receipt, she ain’t need no orange sticker, nothing like that.”

Gustavo was clearly upset and told the worker he had nothing to hide.

The worker told him to “tone it down” but he wasn’t having it.

He said, “You can have a receipt with proof that you purchased something and you are trying to return it, but they don’t want to believe you.”

Gustavo added, “Crazy brother, they’re gonna have me wait her another 30-45 minutes just to prove I ain’t steal something.” Complete article

Walmart’s Antidote to Locked Up-Products: A Key on Your Phone 11/05/2024

(Bloomberg) -- Walmart Inc. is testing technology in stores that would let people open security locks for products from their cellphones, a bid to protect against theft without hindering sales.

The technology is live in a few hundred Walmart stores and allows employees to unlock cases without manually using keys, according to a person familiar with the test who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

While the company is rolling out the test to employees first, it has discussed extending mobile unlocking Walmart+ loyalty members, other people familiar with the plan said. Walmart has previously said shrink, or inventory loss due to theft, damage or other factors, is a challenge for the industry and that the company is working to manage the issue. Walmart had no additional comment.

Theft has historically been a thorn in retailers’ side, denting sales and profits. For every item that gets stolen, companies lose what they paid to stock the product and what they would earn from sales. In recent years, some operators have reported higher incidents of shoplifting and have locked up more items that could be stolen. Products that are frequently targeted include cold medicine, cosmetics and detergent. Some of these items are then resold illicitly online.

But the locking up of products has become an annoyance for shoppers who have to ring a bell and wait for assistance. It’s also more busy work for store employees to open the locks by hand. Complete article

‘I’m over it, Walmart’: Shopper gets a non-functioning shopping cart. Then they head over to WD-40 aisle 11/07/2024

There’s an elephant in the room when it comes to this Walmart shopper’s experience—and they’re not alone.

Walmart has been a go-to retail and grocery store for decades, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its flaws.

According to Top Class Actions, there are multiple class actions filed against the brand. From alleging its pure avocado oil contains other oils to wrongfully labeling a baby product as hypoallergenic, Walmart is in some hot water.

Outside of group claims, individual consumers have been calling out the company, bringing numerous complaints to the internet. One woman accused them of lying about a vanity, another content creator flagged them for a questionable candy product. The list goes on for miles. .....

Pewo then grabs an open can of WD-40 from the store shelf and begins spraying one of the wheels.

“I’m over it Walmart’, he writes over the clip.

It’s also important to note that he puts the now-used WD-40 back on the shelf, seemingly not paying for it. Complete article

Walmart tests new way to fight frustration over locked-up products 11/09/2024

Walmart (WMT) is quietly testing out a new way to tackle a major pain point for shoppers who have previously expressed growing frustration over encountering locked-up products in stores.

It is widely known that, in order for a customer to buy a product locked behind a glass display, she needs the assistance of an employee who can unlock it. That can be time consuming if the store is low on staff.

Many retailers lock up their products to help prevent theft, but doing this can also cause retailers to lose sales from frustrated consumers.

According to a recent survey from Consumer World, 55% of respondents said that when they encounter a product that is locked up in a store, they search for another place to buy it instead of seeking a store employee to unlock it.

As the distaste for locked-up merchandise grows among consumers, Walmart is exploring the possibility of allowing its shoppers to open security locks for items in stores themselves, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Complete article

According to several surveys and online forums, most people wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate their houses for Christmas. But it’s becoming more and more common for people to throw that etiquette out the door in lieu of letting in the Christmas cheer earlier than ever. And while holiday decoration options seem endless in the age of online retailers, so do the fails. There’s the Home Depot Buddy the Elf animatronic that spreads fear rather than fear. And then there’s the Temu pumpkin that would make even the biggest of houses appear tiny by comparison. Now TikToker Kascei is introducing the world to the Walmart inflatable gingerbread man through her viral TikTok.

‘Fake heiress’ Anna Delvey takes legal action against Walmart for profiting off her alias — because she trademarked it 11/18/2024

If there’s one thing Anna Delvey hates, it’s a fake!

Delvey has sent a cease-and-desist to Walmart, Page Six hears, after the big box began selling T-shirts and sweaters with her name and image on them — because it turns out that she trademarked her criminal alias just before she left prison.

Delvey’s real name is Anna Sorokin, and she famously went to the slammer for posing as a “fake heiress” to scam businesses and individuals out of more than $250,000 between 2013 and 2017.

Her lawyer, Duncan Levin, says more than 50 items with her name on them are available through the site. Walmart.

Since leaving prison, she’s successfully reinvented herself as a fashion insider. And after the Walmart site began offering cheap-looking clothes with the name “Anna Delvey” on them, as well as pictures taken at her 2019 Manhattan trial, her lawyer Duncan Levin went into action.

Calling it an “egregious… infringement of her federally registered trademark,” he said that “this infringement is highly damaging to Ms. Sorokin’s brand and reputation.”

The “Anna Delvey” trademark was registered to Anna Delvey LLC with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on September 3, 2022 (about a month before she was released from prison and put under house arrest in her East Village apartment) and it was approved in July of this year. Per the filing, it covers; “Dresses; Gloves; Hats; Hoodies; Pants; Rompers; Scarves; Shirts; Shoes; Shorts; Skirts; Socks; Bottoms as clothing; Tank tops; Tops as clothing; Under garments and Waist belts.” Complete article

A deadly E. coli outbreak and a carrot recall involving Publix, Walmart, Kroger and others 11/17/2024

Grimmway Farms, which made and packaged the organic carrots, stated the above in Saturday’s recall announcement that was on the company site and the FDA site.

A list of the stores involved across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico include Walmart, the Kroger stores, Albertsons stores, Publix, Food Lion and its related stores, Target, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s and Canadian chains Loblaws and Compliments.

“State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick,” the FDA said Sunday. “Of the 27 people interviewed, 26 reported eating carrots. The FDA’s traceback investigation identified Grimmway Farms as the common supplier of organic whole and baby carrots in this outbreak.” Complete article

‘I thought the random $60 charge for carrots on my receipt was bad’: Woman warns about shopping at Walmart after discovering $665 mystery charge on her receipt 11/20/2024

With the inflation of the past few years setting prices at incredible highs, customers have gotten used to seeing large totals on their grocery receipts.

Still, some price increases can still shock shoppers. For example, one TikTok user recently shared their disbelief after finding a grocery bill from 2022; another noted how over $120 of groceries barely covered two days of his family’s eating.

Sometimes, these surprises are simply due to rising prices. However, other times, stores can make errors that lead to significant charges for shoppers, as recently noted by TikTok user @hotp1nk818 in a video with over 10,000 views.

What was this Walmart shopper’s mysterious $665 charge?

In her video, the TikToker explains that she went to Walmart to pick up some Christmas decorations along with other items. By the time she reached the self-checkout, she says she had a full cart.

“I was, like, kind of splurging, but I didn’t think it was going to be, like, too much,” she says.

Upon arriving at the checkout, she estimated that her total cart cost would be around $200.

However, upon looking at the total, she was startled to see that the total was over $1,000. Confused, she paid the bill and went home, deciding that she would simply sort through everything when she got home and return the items she didn’t need later.

When she got back to Walmart to return the unnecessary items, she was told that they only equaled $229.

“I was like, ’What?’” the TikToker recalls. “Like, what did I spend $700 on? There’s no way!”

It was at this point that she looked at her receipt—and noticed a $665 charge for beef liver.

“[The worker] was like, ‘We don’t even sell anything like that,’” the TikToker states. Complete article

Former Ca. Walmart truck driver falsely accused of fraud awarded $34.7 million by California jury 11/22/2024

A former Walmart truck driver was awarded $34.7 million after a San Bernardino County jury determined that the company falsely accused him of fraud before firing him while he was on medical leave.

Jesus “Jesse” Fonseca worked as a truck driver for Walmart’s Apple Valley Distribution Center for 14 years before he was hurt on the job when another vehicle rear ended his truck on a highway, according to court documents shared by Fonseca’s attorneys. After Fonseca filed a workers’ compensation claim, the company accused him of fraud and fired him.

Fonseca sued Walmart for disability discrimination, failure to accommodate his disability, failure to engage in an interactive process, retaliation and failure to prevent discrimination, all in violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act. He also accused the company of interference and retaliation in violation of the California Family Rights Act as well as hostile work environment harassment, wrongful termination, infliction of emotional distress and defamation.

“We believe the evidence at trial showed that Walmart’s defamation of Jesse was part of a broader scheme to use false accusations to force injured truckers back to work prematurely or, if not, terminate them so that Walmart can cut down workers’ compensation costs,” said David deRubertis, Fonseca’s lead trial attorney, in a statement. “Hopefully, this historic verdict will be the beginning of change from Bentonville.” ......

“This outrageous verdict simply does not reflect the straightforward and uncontested facts of this case,” Walmart responded in a statement. “Accordingly, we will pursue all available remedies.” Complete article

Walmart becomes latest - and biggest - company to roll back its DEI policies 11/26/2024

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is rolling back its diversity, equity and inclusion policies, joining a growing list of major corporations that have done the same after coming under attack by conservative activists.

The changes, confirmed by Walmart on Monday, are sweeping and include everything from not renewing a five-year commitment for an equity racial center set up in 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd, to pulling out of a prominent gay rights index. And when it comes to race or gender, Walmart won’t be giving priority treatment to suppliers.

Walmart’s moves underscore the increasing pressure faced by corporate America as it continues to navigate the fallout from the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June 2023 ending affirmative action in college admissions. Emboldened by that decision, conservative groups have filed lawsuits making similar arguments about corporations, targeting workplace initiatives such as diversity programs and hiring practices that prioritize historically marginalized groups.

Separately, conservative political commentator and activist Robby Starbuck has been going after corporate DEI policies, calling out individual companies on the social media platform X. Several of those companies have subsequently announced that they are pulling back their initiatives, including Ford, Harley-Davidson, Lowe’s and Tractor Supply. Complete article

Community leaders call for Walmart boycott in response to DEI elimination 11/28/2024

A coalition of community members, faith leaders, and activists is calling for a boycott of the Roebuck Walmart in Birmingham, starting this Black Friday. The action comes in response to Walmart’s recent announcement that it will eliminate its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The boycott will begin at 8:00 AM on Friday, November 29, at the Walmart located at 9248 Parkway E, Birmingham, AL 35206. Organizers are encouraging the public to participate in what they describe as a call for corporate accountability and a stand for economic equity.

Walmart’s decision includes the discontinuation of efforts designed to address systemic inequities, particularly those supporting Black merchant suppliers and other programs introduced after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

“We as community members recognize the power of our dollars,” said Birmingham Organizers in a statement. “By choosing where it’s spent, a clear message is sent that corporations must prioritize supporting and uplifting minority communities. Our spending habits have driven change throughout our nation’s history and can still do so. We must ensure that our dollars are spent with those who reflect our values.” Complete article

Fire Causes Evacuation Of Delaware Walmart Friday Night 11/30/2024

The Delaware State Fire Marshals Office is investigating a fire that damaged a big box store late Friday.

On Friday evening, a fire was reported in the garden center of the Walmart located at 117 Wilton Blvd in New Castle. Firefighters, dispatched at 10:52, found smoke inside the building and a fire in the garden center upon arrival.

Crews began their attack on the fire while simultaneously conducting a search of the store to locate any potential victims. The search confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the premises, and no one was found inside.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire in the garden center area. Once the flames were under control, command instructed crews to shut off the store’s sprinkler system. Black America Doesn’t Have to Shop at Walmart 11/27/2024

Walmart made big promises after George Floyd’s murder. Now, under pressure from “anti-woke” activists, it’s axing its racial equity center and ditching DEI. Does the company still deserve a piece of Black America’s $1.8 trillion spending power?

Let’s be clear: Walmart needs Black America a heck of a lot more than Black America needs Walmart.

Wielding roughly $1.8 trillion in spending power this year, Black folks’ economic clout is undeniable. We get to choose where we spend our hard-earned cash during the holiday shopping season and beyond.

But Walmart — one of many companies that made lofty promises about fighting systemic racism after George Floyd’s murder — just pulled the plug on its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Now, three weeks after Donald Trump’s election, they claim they want to be “a Walmart for everyone.” And the anti-woke bros on the right are trading high-fives, claiming they forced the retail giant to abandon its DEI initiatives. Walmart is screwing up and their customers are going to be very angry – They are going to raise their prices from this date on – All confirmed 11/30/2024

Price hikes: Walmart’s latest move to offset costs is leaving customers frustrated—here’s what you need to know.

Walmart could be forced to increase prices if Trump’s proposed tariffs are implemented. According to Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey, the company might have no choice but to raise prices on certain products if the tariffs suggested by President-elect Donald Trump become a reality.

The Impact of Tariffs on Retail Prices

“We strive to avoid price hikes,” Rainey stated during an interview last Tuesday. “Our business model focuses on offering low prices every day. However, there may be situations where costs rise for customers.” He also mentioned that it’s still too soon to determine which items might see price increases due to tariffs on imports.

Rainey shared his perspective on the possible policy shift as Walmart surpassed Wall Street’s sales and earnings projections, also raising its annual forecast.

Walmart’s remarks join a growing list of concerns from U.S. retail executives about the adverse effects of tariffs. Throughout his campaign, Trump proposed imposing a 10% to 20% tariff on all imported goods, with some products from China potentially facing duties as high as 60% to 100%. Complete article
