Walmart Crime Report July 2024

Walmart had another fifteen shootings related to their business, with four of them killing people, including a toddler that accidently fired a gun killing himself; there were also at least eight injuries related to these shootings, one suspect that was shot by a police officer, at least two that are critical, which means that they could be added to the death toll, although if they haven't died yet it's getting less likely. One of these shootings actually happened near their property and the victim went to Walmart for help causing some panic there and another happened last month but it wasn't previously reported, adding to the evidence that mainstream media isn't as prompt in reporting major crimes as they used to be. This raises the question if more major crimes aren't being reported widely, which is virtually guaranteed.

In addition to the four people killed in shootings at Walmart there were two people stabbed to death, one employee riding a bike home from Walmart killed when a police cruiser hit her, two bodies found on their premises, one more death being investigated on their property and a fetus from a miscarriage found in their trash, bringing the total of deaths to eleven, including the miscarriage. Five of these shootings were all in Alabama including two of the fatal shootings and one of the injuries where a police officer shot a suspect; and both the suspect and victim in a fatal shooting in Rhode Island were from Alabama doing contracting work for Walmart. I doubt if there have ever been so many shootings at Walmart in one state before, and Alabama isn't one of the eighteen or nineteen most populated states, but it is often among the five states with the highest murder rates, and always one of the top ten for murder rates. One of the two fatal stabbings was a woman killing her boyfriend, the other was a man killing his wife, in two different states, which is very unusual since stabbing deaths are very rare, especially compared to shooting deaths.

There are a growing number of stories about more people trying to shoot down Walmart drones since one person in Florida last month did this, which was inevitable; but so far he's the only one that actually did it, although more are also inevitable unless Walmart respects the wishes of the public, which they rarely do.

Walmart also had at least half a dozen more gun related crimes, including robberies, carjackings and domestic disputes, probably more but the media and Google aren't reporting many news stories as promptly as they used to, if they report them at all. They were also looking for two different murder suspect at or near two different Walmart and caught one of them, although the alleged murders wasn't committed there.

Walmart or police stations around the country routinely come up with crackdowns on shoplifting, acting as if this is new, but shoplifting has been increasing steadily for decades, often because of changes in store policies or designs, including making it easier to go out the door with carts full of merchandise when no ones looking or self-checkout and other corner cutting policies inevitably leading to more theft. Last month several Florida Walmart's and the police claimed that shoplifting increased over 500% in a period of about a year, which is extremely hard to believe. They admit a large majority of it is "skip-scanning" but it's virtually guaranteed that record keeping is a big part of the reason for this, and that the increase started much earlier.

Regardless of when or why the increase in shoplifting happened there are a growing number of incidents endangering the health or lives of employees or police as a result of this, including at least one life threatening attack on an employee last month and another officer attacked by a suspected voyeur, and similar incidents to this happen every month, often as a result of crimes that could easily be designed with rational store design, employing more workers to help customers and discourage crime, and eliminating self-checkout, among other policies that reduce crime and expenses to the public, but cut into profits.

Once again there have been a staggering number of credit card skimmers stealing customer data at Connecticut and Rhode Island stores, and perhaps many more; these are much more common at self-checkout, since the scanners can be installed there without being noticed, yet there's little effort to eliminate the self-checkouts making this possible or warn customers of this problem. Once again, it's customers at risk from this, not Walmart profits, possibly explaining why they do little or nothing to stop it. And, of course, there are daily complaints about Walmart's crime prevention problems leading to false accusations, long lines or many others problems, including locked merchandize being put in locked boxes after an employee gets it out that can only be unlocked by the cashier, and they're even being reported in several news stories every day.

Another police officer was caught stealing from Walmart; typically when this happens the officer is quickly fired, unlike when they kill poor people, often minorities, and the Police Union comes to their defense ensuring it's difficult if not impossible to charge them or even remove them from the force.

It's a far different story for minorities including many that are constantly falsely accused of shoplifting; one African American woman who claimed she was racially profiled was accused of trespassing when she returned to file a complaint last month, and this is just once case out of dozens if not thousands, including at least two lawsuits for millions of dollars where juries found agasint Walmart, at least one is being appealed.

They also have an enormous number of disgruntled employees, with or without legitimate concerns, including one that threw items in the store after being fired, another that made what they called "terroristic threats" and many more. The vast majority of disgruntled employees have legitimate concerns and don't go overboard like this, but there may be mitigating circumstances for some that do.

Most employees with legitimate concerns use much more acceptable ways of expressing their views, but rarely get any attention; one example where a Walmart workers got a little more attention than most was posted on Twitter, (Video) TaraBull: Does she have a valid point? 07/08/2024 where a Walmart worker talks about how modern jobs can't support a decent lifestyle, which leaves many people in a state of desperation, and some of those inevitably resort to extreme measures. The simple and obvious solution is to defend the rights of working class people instead of turning them against each other, but the rich increase profits with the current corrupt system.

There are an enormous number of cases where police spend astronomical amounts of money on petty shoplifting, often when the media doesn't provide complete details, including one where they called in a helicopter and K-9 dogs in Florida, and there was a similar incident in another Southern State a few months ago.

Sometimes they have cases where returns are made with damaged or empty packages, or, as Walmart often tries to claim, customers fake this. There were two cases of this last month where customers eventually got their money back when enough attention was brought to the issue. This has happened many times before, and on some occasions they proved the customers complaints were legitimate, and they may have sold damaged or missing items without realizing it, either because someone pulled a bait and switch in the store, of fake merchandise was shipped from their suppliers. There are also many cases of over-charging, sometimes by large amounts, so everyone should be in the habit of checking receipts immediately.

In addition to the bicyclist killed by a police cruiser there were close to, if not more than, a dozen other major automobile crashes, chases, hit and runs, carjackings, and other automobile crimes, including some related to robberies, some armed, including with knives or guns. There were also at least two cars catching fire in one incident, and a truck catching fire in another. There were also at least seven other major fires in their stores, with at least three of them arson, at least a couple of the remaining fires were accidental but the other two weren't disclosed, and one of them was probably arson as well. There were also at least three more stabbings, injuring four people, the fourth in a fight related to a stabbing, and one attempted stabbing in addition to the two fatal stabbings.

Walmart also had at least a couple more recalls including for produce and other fruits or vegetables, some possibly because they might be contaminated with Listeria; this is fewer than the usual number of recalls, but it's been expanded several times and is getting more than the usual amount of attention, implying it may be worse.

They're also expanding many other forms of automation well beyond drones, and in most cases there's no one threatening to shoot their equipment, but there are virtually guaranteed to be many other problems. And despite many claims to the contrary they're virtually guaranteed to eliminate many jobs, and there's little or no plans to share the benefits of automation with the majority of the public, instead using it to increase profits for those that are already so rich they don't know what to do with their money. They could try to help society in return for help with their profits, but the rich virtually never do that, instead seeking more money and power, even though it won't improve their lives.

How often do your in-store shoppers put each item in a separate bag before delivering them to you? They did this to one customer last month and there have been at least half a dozen other people making the same claim, with one Walmart worker on social media explaining why it's easier that way, implying policies encourage this waste.

Have you ever tried to escape after shoplifting or committing some other crime at Walmart in a stolen motorized cart that goes two miles an hour? It didn't work for a Florida man, if you do better let me know.

How often do you see people riding through Walmart on an electronic scooter watching porn and masterbating? This was in NY although I might have guessed Florida.

How about any women destroying hundreds of dollars of merchandise before dropping her pants and mooning everyone?

Have you ever seen Coyotes hunting duck and eating them at Walmart? Or any other wildlife hunts? That was Florida again, whither the Coyote or Duck know it or not.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in July 2024. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart, Partners to Expand Drone Delivery in Dallas Fort Worth Tx. 07/01/2024

Retail giant Walmart, along with its drone delivery partners, is continuing to expand its airborne delivery options in the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area, in anticipation of rolling out drone delivery service at its stores nationwide.

Recently Wing announced to media in the DFW market that, in cooperation with Walmart, it would begin offering drone delivery services in the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington. With the addition of these two new sites, Wing and Walmart will now offer drone delivery to homes in more than a dozen localities across the DFW metroplex.

Currently, Wing – a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet – offers delivery by drone in the North Texas cities of North Richland Hills, Lewisville and Frisco.

Walmart spokeswoman Lindsey Coulter said the recent expansion is part of the retail company’s plans, announced last January, to offer drone delivery to 75% of the population of the D/FW area by the end of 2024. The company appears to be using the D/FW metroplex as a test market to determine the feasibility of expanding drone delivery onto the national stage. Complete article

RETAIL RAGE ‘We’re not your employees,’ blasts Walmart shopper over ‘inconvenient’ store policy and rages ‘get it together’ 07/02/2024

WALMART shoppers have been fuming over a store policy that left them feeling like they were doing employees' work.

Several demanded the retailer change its business model to include more cashiers than self-checkout kiosks.

They claimed the self-service process is more of a way for Walmart to save on labor costs and make shoppers do the work themselves than an added convenience for those who come in to get groceries.

A particularly peeved shopper also argued the removal of most self-checkout kiosks in favor of traditional cashiered lanes would help decrease theft issues for the retail giant.

"If you don't want theft due to self-checkout how about you hire/pay people to run the registers?" they asked in a post to X, formerly Twitter in June.

"We're NOT your employees, WE shouldn't have to check ourselves out!" Complete article

Shoplifting incident turns into life-threatening moment for Mich. Walmart employee 07/03/2024

“They are choking each other.”

Woodhaven police said that is what customers yelled to them upon their arrival to Walmart after getting calls about a shoplifter attacking people in the parking lot.

Police received numerous 911 calls about the suspect who allegedly tried to steal merchandise and then became violent and attacked a store employee.

The incident occurred at about 1:55 p.m. on June 28 at the store, located at 23800 Allen Road.

Several customers in and outside of Walmart were stunned when the suspect ran out the store with three vacuum cleaners, and then warned the employee following him to his vehicle that he had a gun, according to police.

Despite the fact he allegedly said he had a gun numerous times, the employee told police he never actually saw one. Complete article

Americans With Guns Are Hunting Walmart's Delivery Drones 07/03/2024

Shooting down delivery drones is a felony charge, just so you know.

Walmart recently partnered with drone delivery startup Wing to offer packages shipped same-day by air. There is a laundry list of hurdles to overcome in order for this to be a reality, from regulatory approval, technological integration, and simply making it cost-effective to operate. One of the hurdles that Walmart and Wing have recently stumbled over is gun owners. Last week a Florida man admitted to shooting down a Walmart delivery drone, which he claimed was surveilling him, with a 9mm pistol as it flew over his home.

Lake County resident Dennis Winn saw the drone, went inside to get his gun from his safe and fired a single shot at the drone, which was “roughly 75 feet in the air.” Winn is apparently a crack shot, because he hit the drone in center mass, and a bullet hole was found in the drone’s payload area once it returned to a nearby Walmart store.

It’s apparently quite common for Americans to shoot at drones, despite serious legal ramifications. The Federal Aviation Administration punishes any shots fired at drones with the same weight as if you’d opened fire on a Boeing full of passengers. Shooting at any aircraft is charged as a felony with up to 20 years in prison as the recommended penalty. Complete article

PSLPD partners with 3 Fla. Walmarts to curb thieves after 534% increase in retail theft 07/03/2024

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) is working with three Walmart Supercenters to curb retail theft.

The collaboration will have increased foot patrol in and around the three supercenters and will have a "relentless follow-up" by Port St. Lucie officers when the thefts do happen.

The Walmart locations include US 1, Southwest Gatlin Boulevard, and Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard.

The move comes after PSLPD's Crime Analysis Unit discovered a 12-month trend comparison from June 2022 to May of 2023 and from June 2023 to May 2024 where there was a combined 534% increase in retail thefts at the three Walmart Supercenters.

PSLPD identified 58% of the thefts were "skip scan" where suspects would intentionally skip scanning some items at self-checkout. Complete article

Walmart must face lawsuit over deceptive pricing in stores 07/03/2024

July 3 (Reuters) - Walmart (WMT.N), opens new tab must face a lawsuit claiming it often charges higher prices at the register than it posts on store shelves, costing consumers hundreds of millions of dollars a year, a federal appeals court ruled, opens new tab on Wednesday.

Reversing a lower court judge, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago said consumers could try to prove in their proposed class action that the conduct of the world's largest retailer was a fraudulent "bait-and-switch" that violated several states' consumer protection laws.

It also rejected Walmart's argument that providing receipts after purchases negated any unfairness caused by inaccurate shelf prices.

Circuit Judge David Hamilton wrote for a three-judge panel that it was "neither unreasonable nor fanciful" for consumers to believe Walmart would charge the prices displayed on shelves. Complete article

Woman Reveals Extreme Steps Walmart Takes to Prevent Shoplifting 07/03/2024

Awoman has hit out at Walmart for "inconveniencing legitimate customers" with its efforts to prevent shoplifting.

Stores in the U.S. lost an estimated $121.6 billion to retail theft in 2023, according to data compiled by Capital One Shopping. As America's largest retailer, Walmart needs to be vigilant of the threat posed by these thefts and take necessary action.

However, Alexandra Nicole believes the retail giant may have taken things a little too far. In a June video posted to her TikTok, @opie_petsitting, she documented the difficulties she had during a visit to a Walmart store in Spring Valley, Las Vegas.

Nicole had only gone in to buy deodorant and contact solution but quickly found herself waylaid by the current Walmart security measures.

In the clip, she showed how Walmart now keeps both items in a locked glass cabinet. That cabinet has to be unlocked by a member of staff who then places the items in a small lock box in the customer's cart, which can only be opened at the register. Complete article

Shopper calls out Walmart after spotting countless plants getting thrown away in garden center: 'They destroy them so nobody can get them' 07/05/2024

"It's so frustrating to see all these good plants go to waste!"

When products expire or get damaged, it makes sense for stores to throw them away. It makes less sense when they're still perfectly good — and even less when they're living, green plants.

That's unfortunately what prompted a recent social media post about Walmart that caused the retailer to come under fire online for a sight spotted in its garden store.

What happened?

One frustrated gardener posted about the experience on Reddit. "Walmart throws away countless plants," they said.

The photo they attached to the post shows two Walmart shopping carts overflowing with tray after tray of plants that are apparently headed for the dumpster. There are what seem to be tomato and basil plants visible, among others, and most look totally green and healthy — even the ones squashed at the bottom of the cart. Complete article

Walmart faces lawsuit claiming deceptive pricing 07/09/2024

Walmart advertises “Everyday low prices” but a lawsuit claims those prices are deceptive. A court in Illinois has ruled that the suit against the retailer can go forward.

The plaintiff, Yoram Kahn, claims Walmart posts one price on the shelf, but when the item is checked out, the price is slightly higher. Over multiple transactions, the complaint alleges that Walmart pads its profits by millions of dollars.

Khan told the court that he shopped at a Walmart store in Niles, Illinois, on Aug. 2, 2022, and took note of the prices on the shelves. When he checked out, he was charged more than the price on the shelves.

Khan said the price difference on the six items came to $1.89. He contends that Walmart violated the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, the Illinois Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other states’ consumer protection statutes. Complete article

Judge tosses claim targeting Walmart 07/09/2024

A federal judge has dismissed a claim against Walmart Inc. in which the Federal Trade Commission said the company didn't do enough to deter fraud through its money-transfer services.

The FTC said in an amended complaint it filed a year ago that Walmart knew about the role these services played in telemarketing scams.

Walmart provides money transfers as an agent of larger businesses such as Western Union and MoneyGram.

The judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ruled on Wednesday that the FTC failed to substantiate its claims that any fraud conducted through Walmart's money transfers involved telemarketing, or that company employees knew that the transactions were related to telemarketing.

The FTC's claim was dismissed with prejudice, so the agency can't sue Walmart for that claim again. Complete article

College credit for working your job? Walmart and McDonald’s are trying it 07/08/2024

When Walmart stopped requiring college degrees for most of its corporate jobs last year, the company confronted three deep truths about work and schooling:

A college diploma is only a proxy for what someone knows, and not always a perfect one. A degree's high cost sidelines many people. For industries dominated by workers without degrees, cultivating future talent demands a different playbook.

Some of the nation’s largest employers, including Walmart and McDonald’s, are now broaching a new frontier in higher education: convincing colleges to give retail and fast-food workers credit for what they learn on the job, counting toward a degree. Complete article

Walmart is opening five automated distribution centers as it tries to keep its grocery dominance 07/10/2024

Walmart is opening five automated distribution centers for fresh food across the country.

The facilities are part of a broader effort by the big-box retailer to modernize its supply chain and expand capacity to keep up with customers’ online orders.

Automation is also a reason why CEO Doug McMillon said the company expects to grow profits faster than sales in the coming years.

Walmart said Wednesday that it will open five automated distribution centers for fresh food across the country, as the retailer chases efficiency and its online grocery business grows.

The discounter’s new facilities are roughly 700,000 square feet on average. Chilled and frozen areas have automation that stores and retrieves perishable items, such as strawberries and frozen chicken nuggets that are later sold at stores or added to customers’ e-commerce orders.

Walmart is the nation’s largest grocer, but it is modernizing its supply chain to keep up with customers who are increasingly picking up orders in the parking lot or getting groceries delivered to their doors. Store pickup and delivery drove the company’s 22% e-commerce gains in the U.S. in its most recent quarter. Complete article

A Philadelphia Woman Allegedly Destroyed Hundreds of Dollars of Merchandise at Walmart Before Exposing Herself 07/12/2024

A Pennsylvania woman recently made waves when she allegedly went on a rampage at a Walmart store. After damaging hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise, she reportedly finished the bizarre demonstration by giving fellow patrons a show they will not soon forget.

There are blogs, subreddits, and social media accounts dedicated solely to chronicling the comings and goings of Walmart shoppers. And it’s people like 26-year-old Chiquita Morgan who keep such outlets primed with a bevy of quality content. It’s hard to say exactly what possessed Morgan to vandalize the store as she did. But the young woman certainly gave locals something to talk about.

Store personnel at the Upper Chichester Walmart called law enforcement following Morgan’s unruly display. A police report on the matter reveals that Morgan pulled down her shorts, then bent over and gave the entire establishment a view of her downstairs. Yikes!

When officers arrived on the scene to de-escalate the bizarre situation, Morgan reportedly proceeded to give law enforcement personnel a series of phony names. When that didn’t work as she’d hoped, Morgan finally gave in and revealed her actual name. Complete article

CRIME RISE ‘Skip scanning’ at Walmart self-checkout forces police to take increased action – not just inside stores or with cameras 07/12/2024

POLICE have confirmed they will carry out extra patrols due to rising theft at self-checkouts at several Walmart stores in one city.

Cops in Port St. Lucie, Florida, around 50 miles north of Palm Beach, said they had to make arrests due to “skip-scanning.”

This term refers to people who use self-checkouts to deliberately avoid paying for certain items.

These shoppers may pay for some goods but steal by bagging other items without scanning them.

Police said they have seen a huge jump in thefts reported from the three Walmart supercenters in the area.

One of these stores saw a 500% increase from the year before, and over 50% of those reports were about suspected “skip-scanners.” Complete article

BUGGY BOTHER ‘We’re literally eye to eye,’ fumes Walmart shopper after pointing out parenting issue with the store’s new carts 07/12/2024

WALMART shoppers are finding new carts at many stores across the country.

The retail titan began rolling out a new cart design last summer, but not everyone is thrilled.

Some people have complained that the design, which has a higher shelf near the handles, is bad for shorter people.

The new shelf is meant to replace the standard style that folds out and locks into place.

But it’s also caused a new problem for parents.

Kids often ride in shopping carts by sitting in the top shelf of carts — some of which are even designed to accommodate little legs.

However, the new shelf poses a problem, blocking the view for some parents whose kids want a ride in the cart.

The handlebars on the cart are 3.5 inches taller, but the child seats are 5.8 inches taller. Complete article

How these alleged Va. thieves managed to fleece Walmart stores of over $600,000: 'This was a full-time job' 07/12/2024

YORKTOWN, Va. -- While the investigation into a retail theft ring originated in York County, Virginia, authorities believe the 7-person crew stole large, expensive televisions from big box stores - a yearlong coordinated effort with a retail value approaching $700,000.

The ring — based out of Hampton and Newport News — allegedly stole 691 TVs from mostly Walmart and Sam Club locations in up to ten states.

“A huge operation for them," said Rob Montgomery, the York-Poquoson Sheriff. "Approximately $183,000 worth of loss to Walmart in the Commonwealth of Virginia alone. We’re probably looking at well over $600,000 that this organization was responsible for from [Virginia] to Florida.”

Their target at the stores were mostly 70" and 80" TVs valued at $600 and more. Crew members allegedly would purchase a new TV at a store and immediately take it into a box truck waiting outside. They would then unwrap the new TV and place an old, broken TV back in the new box.

Investigators said the serial number and product tags were removed from the brand-new TVs and placed on the busted ones. The suspects were able to rewrap the broken products so well that the employees at stores thought they were returning an unopened TV box. Complete article

‘I did not know this’: Walmart worker shares PSA on what badge colors actually mean 07/13/2024

Have you ever walked into Walmart and noticed some associates wear different color name badges? Some are yellow and others blue. A Walmart worker revealed why some associates wear different color badges in a video with over 48,000 views.

“This is a PSA on the color badges at Walmart,” @candy.cream4 starts in the clip. First, she points at a yellow badge with the name “Gavin” on it. “So, this badge right here is age 16 to 18 years old, OK? That means a minor,” she says, tapping her finger on the badge. Next, the content creator raps on a blue badge with “Melissa” on it. “This badge is over 18, OK? Adult,” she explains.

Then, @candy.cream4 returns to the yellow badge. “So, for all you people who want to be giving people a hard time or flirting with them, just remember though that you’re flirting with a minor,” she adds. “This color is minor.” Afterward, she goes back to the blue badge. “This color is an adult.” she wraps up the video by gesturing back and forth between the badges, emphasizing which is a minor and which one is an adult. .....

On the other hand, alleged current Walmart employees begged to differ.

“where i live the yellow is management,” one user remarked.

“well if you have yellow hanging underneath your badge that means your management,” a second added. Complete article

Walmart builds wide lead among US retail media networks, report finds 07/11/2024

Walmart’s retail media network is far ahead of the pack compared to U.S. peers when it comes to delivering advertising impressions, a report by Sensor Tower revealed.

The big-box store saw 11 billion impressions in Q1 while No.2 Target generated fewer than 7 billion impressions. Chewy, The Home Depot and Kroger rounded out the top-five list.

Breaking out performance, Walmart landed on top for onsite media impressions, meaning it has better monetized its owned properties. These findings come as retail media networks are pushing harder into offsite media to tap into additional revenue streams.

Sensor Tower’s analysis offers a peek into the top-performing retail media networks in the U.S., excluding Amazon, which effectively operates in a category of its own. Walmart’s lead position is perhaps unsurprising: It is the largest traditional retailer in the country and has invested heavily in its retail media network Walmart Connect, including through ambitious bets on building out an ad-tech infrastructure. Walmart Connect also has data-sharing partnerships with major platforms and publishers, including TikTok and Disney. Complete article

They sell caged puppies in a Walmart parking lot. NC cops and the store can’t stop them 07/16/2024

People are selling caged puppies in the parking lot of a Lake Norman Walmart despite complaints from the public, repeated visits by police and orders from store managers to leave.

In sweltering heat, shoppers spotted sellers again in the parking lot of the Walmart off Interstate 77 exit 36 (N.C. 150) in Mooresville over the July Fourth weekend. Business was brisk, shoppers wrote on Nextdoor.

“I went there today and the cages were full and when I left there were 2 left,” a Huntersville woman said on Nextdoor.

Her post received 125 replies, many from fellow Lake Norman residents expressing concern about the puppies’ health and whether they came from puppy mills.

“Several years ago they were there almost every weekend,” a Davidson woman said. “My friend got one of the pups and when they went to the vet discovered the pup was quite sick. It hadn’t had any of the basic shots, no de-worming etc.”

“I got a boxer who ended up having parvo,” a Mooresville woman said. “Lived but pretty expensive to treat and got for $50.”

Residents on Nextdoor reported seeing different breeds for sale, large and small. “We’re aware these sellers sometimes set up in our store parking lot,” Alicia Anger, director of global communications for Walmart corporate affairs, told The Charlotte Observer in an email.

“When brought to our attention, we instruct them to leave the property.” Complete article

Exclusive: Walmart looks to bet $200 million on autonomous forklifts 07/26/2024

NEW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - Walmart (WMT.N), opens new tab has plans to potentially spend $200 million on self-driving forklifts as part of broader efforts to automate more warehouse operations, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The world's largest retailer wants autonomous forklifts to move pallets of goods in its distribution centers, which replenish Walmart stores. It has intended to buy possibly hundreds from Fox Robotics and invested $25 million in the Austin-based startup, the sources said.

The rollout, which Walmart could stop at any time, would occur in stages over several years and hinges on the retailer's satisfaction with the "FoxBots," said the people, who were not authorized to discuss the plans publicly.

Details about Walmart's investment and rollout have not been reported before. They underscore the company's strategy for warehouse automation, which aims to grow profit and help it compete with retailers like Amazon.com (AMZN.O).

Camille Dunn, a Walmart spokesperson, declined to comment on the $200 million spending plans. She referred Reuters to an April announcement that said Walmart had piloted the technology and would add at least 19 FoxBots to four facilities, noting that deployments are "an evolving process" from proof of concept to rollout.
