Walmart had at least ten shootings this month, with four of them leading to deaths, one of which was a suicide after being confronted by police after alleged shoplifting incident, most if not all the others lead to injuries and or property damage; at least two of these shootings were the result of parking lot arguments or road rage; and two involved police officers, although it is unclear if it was the police that fired the shots. Two of them happened only hours apart in two separate states; and three of them were in Louisiana, which consistently has the highest murder rates, with two only a couple days apart.
There were also at least ten more gun related incidents, although one of them turned out to be a false alarm about an active shooter. Walmart has so many crime problems that fake reports seem very credible and often get widely reported including another that appears to be a fake robbery and assault. However one of the real incidents involves someone that managed to get a stolen shotgun from behind the counter and load it, before being stopped which could have been another active shooter incident. And the Parkland shooter also showed up at Walmart after fleeing from the school, although it is unclear whether he brought any guns with him, but unlikely since that would have attracted more attention sooner. Most if not all of the remaining ones involved robberies or failed shoplifting attempt including one that was over a pair of gym shorts. It's not uncommon for petty theft to escalate fast into violence incidents including another incident where a shoplifter made a point of stealing a baseball bat which he pulled out when confronted.
Committing armed robbery or attempted armed robbery with weapons stolen from Walmart is more common than most people suspect.
Apparently Walmart quietly stopped selling AR-15s back in 2015; however this wasn't for political or gun safety reasons; it was because of sluggish sales. They're now banning sales to anyone under twenty-one, which might seem good to some gun control activists, but most of them will almost certainly see how weak it is, especially with so many other problems with people getting guns at Walmart, including a lot of people stealing them, like the one that almost had an opportunity to become an active shooter last month.
Gun rights activists are guaranteed to call for a boycott!
Gun control activists that have called for boycotts of Walmart in the past may still call for boycotts in the future, if not almost immediately; and it won't be the first time people on both sides of the issue were calling for boycotts of Walmart.
If Walmart wasn't so incompetent at everything I might feel sorry for them!
A former employee of Walmart was sentenced to fifteen years for "slashing customers" at a Texas Walmart in 2016; however they didn't report many of the details that came out shortly after that incident, including the fact that one of the customers that was slashed was a contractor working indirectly for Walmart, which implies the possibility that even though they claim it was arbitrary and they didn't know each other they might have had some contact; this is especially suspicious since they also neglected to mention a previous report that the incident happens shortly after the customer had a conversation with his supervisor about something.
I have no way of knowing for certain, but I can't rule out the possibility that this was a disgruntled employee with an argument with a contractor that might have been related to work of some sort. There have been a lot of problems with disgruntled employees, including one that allegedly used a stolen phone from a co-worker to call in a bomb threat this month.
I don't know which one is worse, having employees randomly attack just any customer that comes in, or admitting to problems with their worker discipline problems, assuming there are any.
A large portion of their business practices has been shrouded in secrecy which almost certainly includes non-disclosure agreements with contractors, and instead of passing disclosure laws that would make it illegal to cover up information that might endanger the public including union busting tactics they pass laws to protect secrecy when it increases profits, even at workers and customers expense.
There were at least two more police departments reporting about how Walmart was a "crime magnet" or shoplifting there was an "epidemic," however the mainstream media only reports these stories briefly at the local level without letting the public know just how common they are, yet many people figure it out anyway.
There was also a viral video of what they called a "good Samaritan" who was trying to slash the tires of an attempted shoplifter as he was trying to get way, who almost got run over as a result; some people might think this sounds more like vigilantism. Neither the government or Walmart are overly concerned about addressing the causes of their high crime problems by stopping the corner cutting, union busting, bad store design that contributes to them, yet there's no shortage of people that are ready to get in a fight over petty shoplifting to protect corporate profits.
In addition to the four people that died in shooting incidents there were at least two other dead bodies found on the premises, one of which they were quick to declare was not suspicious, and later reported that it was an apparent suicide, but they didn't say how. The majority of successful suicides at Walmart are with guns which could mean this is an eleventh shooting incident this month, but recently there was another attempt by putting a hose from the tailpipe into the window where the suicidal person was allegedly saved by a police officer that noticed a problem.
There's no shortage of people getting caught for the strangest reasons including a former employee that attempted to retrieve "medication" he left behind in a safe and getting arrested for illegal drugs, and another one that stole a car and called the owner to ask for help when it wouldn't start.
I did not have to make these things up, this is Walmart!
They had at least eight more auto related crimes including chases, one that started with an attempted kidnapping, crashes, at least one near miss that started out as a shoplifting attempt and three hit and runs. One of these crashes started a grass fire and there were several other fires at Walmart and one where a woman allegedly set her house on fire after being informed she was being evicted and went to Walmart with her cat to call 911 and ask for a ride. One of these fires shut down a store for a full week and they allegedly had to replace all the merchandise in the store before partially reopening.
There were at least two stabbings and a third threat to stab when confronted about a shoplifting. They had plenty of brawls, robberies, assaults, and Alaska police went on a "retail blitz" to catch shoplifters, which I doubt they would be so vigorous about when it comes to robberies from the public and especially when it comes to corporate scams of all kinds, including union busting deceptive advertising and many other things that the government looks the other way at when it's campaign donors stealing from people that don't donate to campaigns.
They also had a police impersonator pulling people over, and four people poisoning fish, although they seemed more concerned about the financial value than the fish. A scam that had a major amount of success for a while simply involved people wearing Walmart vests informing workers that their shift was over, taking over and stealing the cash, although I suspect they might have had inside knowledge.
Walmart has had dozens of times where they found active meth labs in their parking lot which have led to some rumors about them being in stores as well, which turn out to be false but there was an exceptional high profile evacuation this month.
Apparently Benjamin Netanyahu is welcoming Walmart although, I might want more confirming evidence before saying this is a sign of the apocalypse; but Walmart is clearly trying to monopolize as much retail around the world including attempts to adapt to cultures in India or China with very different stores these but just as authoritarian. They're buying up several more businesses including some that use technology to manipulate their customers. With Rachel Brand joining Walmart it's another sign of the revolving door with government and the corporations, not public, they serve. Even though there are more high profile women from the ruling class they're becoming rarer in management, although this isn't as widely reports as they try to cash in their brownie points. They're also getting involved in free flu shots and being sued for contributing to the opioid crisis.
How could anyone have ever thought it would be a good idea for Walmart to take over portions of our health care?
Not that this is good enough evidence to make that apocalypse hypothesis much more credible.
Once again Walmart's money transfers have failed to send money and they stonewalled a women until the media started reporting on it and in another incident a man claimed that he opened a new TV box to find a TV that was much smaller than the one he paid for and he claims they refused to accept responsibility as well, although hopefully after it's being reported he might get better luck. This is actually far more common than most people suspect people have claimed to have found many strange things in products they've bought at Walmart. They also can't seem to figure out what Maryland looks like; for the second time they screwed it up, by creating a bad copy about a year or so after selling a Maryland T-shirt with Massachusetts on the picture.
They're also selling counterfeit products through "independent contractors" on their web sight which seems to be the way they try to avoid accountability, and they're being sued again for discrimination and accused of mistreating nursing mothers again.
Are they capable of learning at all?
When it comes to indoctrination they are; they've opened up what they call "Walmart academies" around the country but anyone looking at how they cheer people on and familiar with research done by Barbara Ehrenreich or Stacy Mitchell might recognize this as part of their indoctrination and union busting practices, as concerned with controlling their workers as with educating them.
They're also having second thoughts about allowing people to camp in their stores, at least in the north west, which I would have thought they might have done if Florida first since that seems to be where they find most of their decomposing bodies.
Despite all their attempts to control everything their online sales came up short and their stock has taken a hard hit leading them to start blaming each other, although anyone that recognizes that sales can't grow forever, especially when a large portion of it is based on political connections or fraud, wouldn't be surprised.
Their executives aren't jumping on counters, and yelling profanities, that I know of, but it's not unprecedented for people outraged with their practices to do so.
Nor is it unprecedented for fights at the checkout lane to get caught on camera and go viral.
Or for suicidal people to start taking their clothes off at Walmart.
Or viral video's of someone ramming a car into the barricades multiple times when they can't agree on who owns it.
Some strange parking jobs might be unprecedented.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in February 2018. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Is Walmart Coming to Israel? Netanyahu Says the Door Is Open 02/04/2018
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to use the power of his office to help bring the world’s largest retailer to Israel.
That was Netanyahu’s message to John Furner, a senior Walmart Inc. executive, at a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, according to Netanyahu’s economic adviser, Avi Simhon. They discussed the idea of Walmart’s opening a retail branch and investing in Israeli technologies, said Simhon, without giving further details.
“We made it clear we are ready to ease regulatory burdens wherever possible to make the market more accessible to them,” said Simhon, who was present at the meeting last month. “The door to Netanyahu’s office is open.” Complete article

It is unlikely that this article is telling the whole story, as indicated by several other articles that came out shortly after this incident. The article doesn't mention previous reports that one of the victim was a contractor working indirectly for Walmart, or that the attack happened shortly after a conversation with the employer. Exact reason why the media, and perhaps the courts are not reporting the full story is unclear, but I wouldn't rule out some contact between the victim and suspect as part of a work related dispute, which is not as uncommon as Walmart would want us to believe.

DOJ official Rachel Brand to step down for top legal job at Walmart 02/09/2018
The Justice Department's No. 3 official is planning to step down at a time of turmoil in the agency.
Rachel Brand is leaving for the top legal job at Walmart, friend and former colleague Jamie Gorelick told The Associated Press Friday.
Brand attracted interest because of her potential to assume a key role in the Trump-Russia investigation. The official overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, has been repeatedly criticized by Trump. If Rosenstein had been fired or quit, oversight would have fallen to Brand. That job would now fall to Solicitor General Noel Francisco.
"She felt this was an opportunity she couldn't turn down," Gorelick said. Walmart sought Brand to be head of global corporate governance at the retail giant, a position Gorelick said has legal and policy responsibilities that will cater to her strengths. Complete article

Women at Walmart Becoming Scarcer Despite C-Suite Promotions 02/12/2018
Walmart Inc. just named two female executives to top jobs even as women are becoming more scarce overall at the nation’s biggest private employer.
Judith McKenna takes charge this month of the retailer’s international business while Rachel Brand is joining the company from a senior U.S. Justice Department post to head global governance. Both women will report directly to the CEO. They are the latest examples of women entering its executive ranks, 10 years after the company pledged to make diversity a signature issue amid allegations of widespread gender discrimination that were ultimately dismissed by the Supreme Court. While the company earned plaudits last month for expanding its parental-leave benefits, and last week named a female technology executive to its board, such allegations continue to plague the company and have resurfaced in a recent Florida lawsuit.
Despite the advances of women executives, and no matter how the legal tussles play out, one thing is clear: Female representation among Walmart’s 1.5 million-person U.S. workforce has declined, according to federal filings. Complete article

Walmart goes to the cloud to close gap with Amazon 02/14/2018
One of Walmart's best chances at taking on Amazon.com in e-commerce lies with six giant server farms, each larger than ten football fields.
These facilities, which cost Walmart millions of dollars and took nearly five years to build, are starting to pay off. The retailer's online sales have been on a tear for the last three consecutive quarters, far outpacing wider industry growth levels.
Powering that rise are thousands of proprietary servers that enable the company to crunch almost limitless swathes of customer data in-house. Complete article

Hardy man sentenced in Walmart arson case 02/14/2018
COLLINSVILLE–A Hardy man will serve less than 2 years out of a 35 year prison sentence, after reaching a plea deal with the prosecution.
Joshua Wayne Wright, 25, was accused of setting merchandise on fire in four separate locations at the Henry County Walmart on March 31, 2017 and then shoplifting an item. As a result, he originally faced four counts of arson of an occupied public building and one count of felony shoplifting. Back in October 2017, he reached a deal, pleading guilty to two counts of arson of an occupied building and two counts of attempted arson of an occupied building. Wright also pleaded guilty to shoplifting as a third or subsequent offense, which is also a felony.
On Wednesday in Henry County Circuit Court, Judge David V. Williams sentenced Wright to 10 years in prison on each of the two arson charges, five years in prison on each of the two attempted arson charges, and five years in prison on the felonious shoplifting charge. That totals 35 years. Williams ordered Wright to serve four months active on each of the five sentences – which totals 20 months – and suspended the remaining 33 years and four months of the sentences on conditions including three years of probation, 10 years of good behavior and payment of $7,687.40 restitution with interest to Walmart for physical damage to the building and for spoiled merchandise.
Judge Williams said that without further evidence, he denied Walmart’s request for $50,000 for lost sales during the 4 ½ hours Walmart was closed after the fires occurred. The building was shut down from 9 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. after the incident. Complete article

Reality Check: Mass tree removal at Asheville NC Walmart raises environmental concerns 02/14/2018
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Walmart paid for a large number of trees to be cut down next to its Bleachery Boulevard store in East Asheville. The trees lived in a detention pond, and there are some concerns their absence increases the chances that runoff will reache the Swannanoa River.
Previously, Walmart disputed owning the pond. Now Walmart accepts ownership, and some people aren't happy with what the company has done.
News 13 has been keeping an eye on this site for months. The trees were cut down in February.
The head of Asheville Greenworks said Walmart followed proper protocol in cutting the trees. However, she said that's because the site was ignored for so long it required such a major tree removal.
Work continued last week while Greenworks' Executive Director Dawn Chavez took in piles of wood replacing what used to look like woods. The detention pond gathers runoff from the Walmart parking lot.
"I'm not a tree hugger, but I am concerned about the larger ecosystem. When trees like this are removed, it hurts the ecosystem services they provide," Chavez said. Complete article

Campbell Soup’s (CPB, -3.21%) ongoing disagreement with Walmart (WMT, +1.38%) over soup promotions continues to take a toll on the food company’s already challenged business.

Walmart execs grilled on disappointing online growth on earnings call 02/20/2018

The miss overshadowed a revenue beat, and the shares had tumbled almost 10% by midday. That puts them on pace to mark their worst-ever dollar decline and worst percentage drop since October 2015, as MarketWatch’s Mark DeCambre has reported. Complete article

17 arrested at Walmart in Anchorage Alaska PD’s latest ‘retail blitz’ 02/23/2018
A couple Anchorage police say tried to leave a discount store with a stolen nail gun and a man who allegedly tried to drive off in a stolen car were among more than a dozen people arrested this week, in APD’s most recent one-day “retail blitz” to deter shoplifting.
A total of 17 people were taken into custody during the Wednesday operation at the Walmart store on DeBarr Road, police spokesman MJ Thim said in a Friday statement. Store security worked with undercover members of APD’s Investigative Support Unit and Community Action Policing Team to pick up suspects in “various crimes including theft and drugs.”
Here’s a look at some of those cases, according to Thim:
Rendy Ripple, 28, and Direll Harris, 30, had “selected an air nail gun, concealed it and exited the store” before officers tried to stop them. At that point, “Ripple resisted arrest and ran on foot through the parking lot in an attempt to escape. Officers caught Ripple in the parking lot and arrested her.” Harris was arrested without incident; both were charged with burglary and theft, with Ripple also facing a count of resisting arrest. MONROE, Wash. A mother is fighting back after she said she was kicked out of a Walmart for taking a stand on breastfeeding her baby in public.
Sarah Olson, 22, said she was breastfeeding her 5-month-old daughter inside a Subway restaurant in the Monroe, Washington, Walmart store last Friday.

She recorded part of that conversation on her sister’s cellphone and shared it with KIRO. Complete article
