Walmart Crime Report December 2017

Walmart broke a record for the most shootings on their property, or in incidents that began on their property, including chases that started as shoplifting incidents, in 2017 with at least 121 beating last years previous record of 104. However, this record was broken early in November, and their Christmas season, had fewer shootings than last year with only seven in December, although two of those resulted in deaths and two more in serious injuries. One of the deaths, and another injury, were an officer related shootings, one where a police officer was shot and the suspect was killed by return fire and the other death in a separate shooting is being investigated as a murder.

There were also at least sixteen other gun related incidents including another shooting, although it was with an air-gun and several panics or false alarms, armed robberies stolen guns or an abandoned found in a shopping cart, a stand off with someone threatening to commit suicide, and an armed police impersonator.

In addition to the two shooting deaths, there were two more bodies found on the property, three that died as a result of accidents and another body that was found in a burning car, making the total body count for the month eight dead. Hardly a month goes by, including this one where there isn't a local story about how much more crime there is at Walmart than other stores, however these stories are almost never reported nationwide, even a year ago last August when it got much more attention in the printed and internet media the national televised media, which a shocking percentage of the public relies primarily on, hardly mentioned all these problems.

They finally ended their controversial program, which they called "Restorative Justice," at least in some states; however they only did this after court rulings calling it extortion and other backlash from people outraged by the program. This program spread throughout the country without ever reporting it widely to the majority of the public, even now that it has been eliminated. It should have been obvious, even before they began it that it was a disaster waiting to happen, but the decisions were made by ideological businessmen that don't seem to care what impact their policies have on the public. The bigger concern should be that the government allowed it to happen in the first place.

A cop in Texas who refused to arrest a hungry shoplifter, against Walmart's wishes was taken off duty, although after the story went viral on the internet they said it was for unrelated causes, whether anyone believes it or not. I suspect there are many more police outraged with Walmart that are reluctant to come out and say so publicly, thanks to the media pressure they may not be able to retaliate against him to much, which is all the more reason to get these stories out. Another amusing incident happened in Texas when an advertising agency searched for a logo for one of Walmart's ads and picked one without reading it too carefully, and published an ad that said "Save money. Screw people over."

I don't know whether I should shed tears for the advertisers or Walmart executives, or maybe just laugh it up without losing any sleep over this one!

In addition to the three crashes, or fallen car, that killed people there were at least ten crashes, high speed chases, carjackings or attempted carjackings, including numerous injuries, and one totaled car that was crashed by an eleven year old left in the vehicle alone. December may have been slow for shootings but not crashes, and as usual the vast majority of fender benders don't get widely reported.

They also had at least six knife or hatchet crimes, including three stabbings, one of a police officer, and a knife that was thrown at another police officer. another chase involved a person being chased with a cross bow and another with two people using hammers for smash and grab incidents. The reports don't always say where they got their weapons, but in many cases people charged with armed robbery don't bother bringing their own weapons including hammers or knives, possibly even a crossbow, they just go through Walmart and steal them.

And even in a slow December crime month they always have at least one brawl. It wasn't a slow month for fires or arson either with at least seven fires, some of which the causes haven't been reported, although at least a few are arson.

A cop was found guilty of beating a man falsely accused of stealing a tomato, and another one was arrested for buying stuff with stolen money, in this case they were both held accountable although they rarely hold them accountable for beating or killing people in the line of duty with excessive force. But this doesn't stop police or security from tackling shoplifters, often for petty thefts and holding them to the ground. There is a growing trend referring to people that confront shoplifters, as "Good Samaritans" although the Biblical reference to this is for someone that was considered of ill repute helping out an injured man when a priest and a member of the royal family refused to help, not for someone fighting battles, even if it is for a justifiable cause.

No members of the Walton family ever have to confront shoplifters in potentially violent situations, yet they're involved with the decisions that lead to many of their workers doing so, and the workers that often get bit, hit, dragged stabbed pepper sprayed etcetera, get little or no compensation for their actions, and in some cases they even get fired. The policy for these incidents often changes and is often not reported until after they happen and the workers often don't seem to know about it until then.

As usual they had several incidents at self-check-out lanes, indicating that although they save a modest amount of money on cashiers, they spend more on security for these incidents; and the tax payers also foot the bill for the arrests and court costs; but that is considered a negative- externality that doesn't affect profits, as long as people remain silent about it. They're even experimenting with cashier-less stores after all these disasters, as a way of competing with Amazon. There are also numerous incidents where their customers get beat or assaulted, sometimes it's customers and workers that are both impacted by corner cutting that wind up fighting each other.

Walmart is being sued again for anti-pregnancy bias, selling flushable wipes that clog septic systems, forced to stop clearing endangered forests, they've been caught selling fake "fingerlings" which can catch fire, and facing a backlash for selling Antifa sweatshirts. In a free enterprise system that is diverse and small companies compete against each other some can sell items like this catering to one view, while others sell different items to a different crowd allowing a larger variety of products to compete, the way a free enterprise is supposed to work; however in an oligarchy system, like we have now public pressure deprives people of things they want to buy since almost the entire economic system is controlled by a small number of corporations.

They also had protests about their policies cutting holiday pay for people forced to work during Thanksgiving or other times close to family time for most people. They're being accused of double charging, their gift cards have been subject to scams, and a woman who brought her young son to the rest room with her was scolded again, and another woman was allegedly kicked out for giving away Walmart Gift cards. One women responded to being treated badly for breast feeding her baby by arranging a "Nurse-in" at Walmart to try to get through to them, although that is virtually impossible without an enormous amount of attention.

They've also suspended their relationship with Tavis Smiley, after he was accused of harassing women; but it's hard to imagine why this so-called defender of the poor ever had a relationship with Walmart in the first place, with their reputation.

Another allegedly dirty needle was found in an online order.

Another man was arrested for crawling around the floor trying to lick women's shoes.

You would think these types of strange incidents would only happen once at most, but not at Walmart.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Walmart trains employees for holidays using virtual reality 12/01/2017

Shoppers jammed the checkout line in Walmart’s electronics department during the holiday rush, their carts full of items to buy.

But as Perry Lewis, a Walmart assistant manager, surveyed the scene, he saw some problems: The long lines appeared disorganized; an associate left a register to grab an item; children crowded too close to the work space behind the counter; and some customers looked irritated.

Lewis watched the situation unfold not in the store but through a virtual reality headset he wore during a class at a Walmart training center in Glen Burnie. Because his three-dimensional view made the events seem real, he might as well have been in the middle of the action. Complete article

Walmart faces backlash after selling Antifa sweatshirts online 12/04/2017

WASHINGTON - Walmart faced a wave of criticism after it began selling Antifa sweatshirts on its website.

The sweater in question is black with white writing that reads, “ANTI FA” with a lightning bolt.

“This 'We Are Anti Fa' white AC/DC style font sweatshirt will express yourself inside the opposition to the ideology, organizations, governments and people from the far right (fascism). Just remember to keep creating a better world,” the product’s description reads in part.

According to Walmart’s website, the sweatshirt is sold and shipped by a third-party company. The sweatshirt, which cost $26.99, is currently out of stock, leaving many to believe Walmart pulled the product after facing an intense backlash, leading for some to call for a boycott of the massive superstore.

More than a dozen comments were left under the product, including one from user bob21801, which reads, “Perfect for the far left, true fascist basement dweller communists, but not a good choice for us conservative patriots.”

While the majority of product reviews were negative, leading to 1.5 stars out of a 5-star review, user esist commented, “All of the 1 star reviews are from Fascist sympathizers.” Complete article

Mich. Walmart clerks assaulted as couple tries to flee with full cart 12/0/2017

KALAMAZOO, MI - Two people were arrested early Monday morning after they apparently tried to steal a shopping cart full of merchandise from a Walmart store and assaulted two employees who tried to stop them.

"Two people loaded up a cart to push it out the door," said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken. "It's what we call a 'push-out.'"

He said deputies were called to the Walmart Supercenter at 509 N. 9th St. in Oshtemo Township at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 4. Employees of the 24-hour business had stopped two people trying to leave the store without paying -- a 24-year-old and a 16-year-old. VanDyken said he did not know whether the male or female suspect was the minor.

"They said, 'You need to leave immediately,'" VanDyken said.

But he said the employees were also trying to get the identities of the pair in order to ban them from ever coming back into the store. That's when the assaults occurred. Complete article

Insiders buy at GE, sell at Wal-Mart 12/05/2017

Insiders have been buying shares at beleaguered General Electric Co. (GE) but selling at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT).

At General Electric, four executives bought shares in November. John Flannery, who became GE's CEO in August, bought 60,000 shares. That brings his GE holding to 683,026 shares, worth $12.2 million at Dec. 1 prices.

Francisco D'Souza, a director, bought 55,000 shares last month, bringing the value of his GE holdings to $1.63 million. D'Souza is CEO and co-founder of Cognizant Tech Solutions Corp. (CTSH). .....

WAL-MART

At Wal-Mart, earnings have declined three fiscal years in a row. Analysts expect a slight improvement in the fiscal year that ends next month. But insiders aren't sending a positive signal.

Entities controlled by the Walton family, whose late patriarch Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart, sold more than 11 million shares in a series of November transactions. The family still owns some 1.5 billion shares, or about 51 percent of the company.

Since Wal-Mart is valued at $288.3 billion, the family stake is worth about $147 billion at Dec. 1 prices.

Given the Waltons' immense wealth, you could regard the sales of 11 million shares as the mere equivalent of stopping off at the automated teller machine. This particular ATM belched out more than $1 billion in November. Complete article

SAPD: Woman stabs off-duty officer under chin, slashes Tx. Walmart employee's face 12/08/2017

An off-duty Floresville police officer and a Walmart employee were attacked by a woman with a knife Friday morning on the Northwest Side.

The officer was rushed to University Hospital for treatment and is now in stable condition, as is the Walmart employee.

The suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was shopping for clothing in the Walmart in the 1600 block of Vance Jackson Road around 5:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Tim Esp.

“She had gathered some clothing like she was going to buy it or something,” he said. “An employee is walking by her, doesn’t say a word to her. There’s no confrontation or anything.”

But for no apparent reason, the woman attacked the employee with a fixed-blade knife, causing an 8-inch superficial cut across the employee’s face.

Esp said the employee and a coworker rushed to notify an off-duty Floresville police officer working security at the Walmart.

As the officer and the suspect walked towards each other, the woman slashed the back of his head with her knife. A struggle ensued, during which the woman stabbed the officer under the chin. Complete article

Kaufman Tx. cop who refused to arrest hungry shoplifter, against Wal-Mart's wishes, taken off duty 12/08/2017

A Kaufman police officer was taken off the job this week after he became Facebook-famous for refusing to arrest a hungry shoplifting suspect.

But the department says its internal investigation is unrelated to "the compassion and kindness" shown by Sgt. Nick Stevens, but rather an incident later at the police station.

Stevens was dispatched to a Wal-Mart around noon Wednesday after a theft was called in.

When he arrived, police said, Stevens met with the suspect who told him that he had stolen food and a drink because he was hungry and hadn't eaten in two days. Stevens let the man off with a warning and gave him some cash.

The Wal-Mart insisted on pressing charges, though Stevens felt it wasn't necessary. However, when the victim of a crime wants to press charges, police are obligated to do so.

Stevens' daughter, Kelsey Stevens, took to Facebook on Wednesday, saying her father was taken off duty because he wouldn't arrest the shoplifting suspect. She has since deleted the post. Complete article

Judge halts clearing of rare forest targeted for Walmart 12/10/2017

MIAMI (AP) — Bulldozers downing trees on a property targeted for a Walmart-anchored shopping center were ordered to stop work after a federal judge issued an emergency injunction sought by environmentalists fighting to save the vanishing forest.

The judge issued the injunction Friday, hours after the Center for Biological Diversity and three other groups sued to overturn a decision earlier this week that cleared the way for the mall, 900 apartments and a parking lot. The land near Zoo Miami had long been targeted for conservation and is part of what was once one of the largest tracks of pine rockland, a globally imperiled forest, outside Everglades National Park.

In her ruling, Judge Ursula Ungaro said the plaintiffs showed a likelihood of winning their case and that ongoing work could cause irreparable harm. Complete article

Woman At RI Walmart Pretends To Scan Items At Self-Checkout In An Attempt To Steal Them 12/1/2017

I’ve said this before, but I hate using the self-checkouts at any store since it honestly usually takes longer than just a regular human ringing you up. Something always goes wrong and an employee ends up having to help you anyway so I say let’s just get rid of them and get back to good old fashion humans scanning our stuff for us. At the very least it can prevent people from attempting to steal stuff like the lady in the video below tried to. The video below was taken at a Walmart in Cranston, Rhode Island, and shows a customer pretending to scan items at the self-checkout and then just tossing it in her shopping cart. The person who filmed this described the incident this way on YouTube: “We had a little bit of time before getting our son off the bus so we decided to get a sandwich at Subway. As we were eating we saw this woman pretending to scan most of her items and hand them off to her husband who was bagging them and putting them in another carriage. I decided to record her doing this and we then told a Walmart employee. The Walmart employee stopped them at the door and asked for a receipt. She stated it was a short receipt for so many items in their cart and asked them to follow her to customer service. Customer service returned the few items they paid for and told them to leave.” Complete article

Gaylord Mich. Walmart attracts shoplifters, say police 12/20/2017

Otsego County has the highest rates of shoplifting in Michigan. According to data compiled by M-Live, Otsego County had 142 shoplifting arrests in 2016.

Gaylord Police Chief Brett McVannel says his officers respond to about three shoplifting calls in an average week, and 85 percent of them are at one store – the local Walmart.

“The biggest reason is that Walmart has some of the best technology available,” says McVannel. “Their camera systems go every single spot in their store, and they are able to watch people from the time they walk into the store to the time that they leave.”

Walmart is exceedingly good at catching shoplifters, says McVannel, and the Walmart Supercenter in Gaylord is a very busy place.

“People from all over northern Michigan will come to Gaylord because we have our Walmart,” he says. “People come to our community to shop a lot, which in turn … they may come to Gaylord to shoplift.” Complete article

Walmart has invested heavily in its U.S. workforce. Is it working? 12/20/2017

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) completed a two-year plan to invest $2.7 billion in its employees in the United States in February. That investment included raising its minimum wage to $10 an hour, while its average full-time hourly wage climbed to $13.38 an hour for full-time workers and $10.58 an hour for part-time employees.

The wage increases were only part of the company's efforts to both improve its workforce and make employees' lives better. Walmart also greatly stepped up its training and has even recently begun offering workers tools to help them manage their finances.

It's a big commitment by the company at a time when the labor market has contracted due to unemployment rates hovering around historic lows. Walmart has done some nice things, but it isn't doing them just to be nice. The chain needs a well-trained, stable workforce, and these investments, at least in theory, should make that happen. Walmart reportedly explores cashier-free stores to keep pace with Amazon 12/20/2017

How do you like the idea of waltzing into a store, taking what you need, and then getting the hell out? No checkouts, no lines, no waiting.

Walmart is exploring the idea of stores without staff where you can simply “grab and go,” with computer vision technology monitoring what you place in your bag so it can automatically tot up the amount and take it from your bank account, sources claiming to have knowledge of the matter told Recode this week.

Yes, it does sound very similar to Amazon’s Go store, a concept unveiled about a year ago but which has yet to launch for the public. The last we heard, Amazon was having some difficulties at its test store in Seattle regarding the all-important payment system, with the technology unable to track more than 20 customers at a time. Wal-Mart Suspends a Controversial Shoplifting Punishment 12/20/2017

Retailer stops programs that offer shoplifters protection from prosecution for a fee after complaints and a court ruling calling practice ‘extortion’

Until recently, a first-time shoplifter caught in any of about 2,000 Wal-Mart stores got a choice: pay hundreds of dollars, complete an education program and all will be forgiven—or don’t and potentially face prosecution.

Corrective Education Co. and Turning Point Justice, Utah-based companies that provide the programs, emerged in recent years as alternatives to the often-overtaxed criminal justice system. They spare law-enforcement resources and hold offenders accountable without leaving the scar of a criminal conviction, their supporters say.

But Wal-Mart Stores Inc., one of the biggest clients of Turning Point and Corrective Education, suspended the programs earlier this month as more local officials questioned the legality of asking people for money under threat of criminal sanctions, though it said it found the programs effective at reducing shoplifting and calls to police.

The move followed a ruling from a California court in August finding that Corrective Education’s program violates state extortion laws. Complete article Are private education programs for shoplifters a second chance or extortion? June 2016

Debra Black was accused of stealing about $6 worth of goods from a Goodwill store.

Black, a quadriplegic in her early 60s, claims she didn’t intend to steal. She says she hung a child’s purse and other items from the arm of her wheelchair so she could use her hands, and forgot about them as she left the store in Orange County, California.

A security guard brought her back inside and accused her of shoplifting.

Retailers don’t usually prosecute such small thefts. But according to Black, the guard “interrogated and intimidated” her into signing up for a private online educational program run by the Corrective Education Co., based in Orem, Utah. At $400 (reduced from $500), the CEC course cost 66 times the value of the items.

Black agreed at the scene to enroll—but never completed the program. According to her lawyer, Christina Sosa of Potter Handy in San Diego, Black agreed to enter the program only because she felt bullied by the guard’s threats to call the police. Black didn’t make the $100 payments, even as CEC sent debt-collection letters threatening to turn her over to police. Black responded by suing the company for debt-collection violations.

Black’s lawsuit was ultimately dismissed, and her claims of coercion were not heard. But in November, the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office filed an unrelated suit against CEC for extortion, unfair business practices and more. It alleges that the company uses the threat of prosecution and misleading statements to pressure suspects into paying. CEC denied all the allegations in its answer filed last December.

Trio stole puppy, ran over owner at Walmart in Marion, deputies say 12/20/2017

SUMMERFIELD, Fla. - Two women and a man were arrested Tuesday night in Marion County on suspicion of stealing a man's puppy during a transaction outside a Walmart and then running the man over.

Justin Karrels, 42, Jeannie Hayden, 55, and Tiffany Stegall, 18, were arrested in connection with the incident, which was reported at the Walmart at 17961 South U.S. Highway 441 in Summerfield.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said the victim had advertised his German shepherd puppies for sale on social media and was contacted by the suspects. After they agreed on the price for one of the dogs, the victim took the puppy to the Walmart so the transaction could be made in a public place, deputies said.

Officials said Karrels and Stegall took the puppy without paying and attempted to leave. The victim tried to stop them, but Karrels struck him and he fell to the ground, deputies said. Hayden then drove over the victim’s legs, deputies said. Complete article

This Mom Held a Nurse-In at Idaho Walmart After She Was Asked to Leave for Breastfeeding Her Son 12/20/2017

Being a new mom isn’t easy. Besides juggling postpartum pain, sleepless nights, and, you know, raising a child, it’s hard to find time to do the other stuff life demands, like grocery shopping.

It’s even harder when your baby starts crying in the middle of the store and you have to drop everything to breastfeed, but then you’re asked to leave because you're supposedly making other shoppers uncomfortable.

During a visit to her local Walmart in Twin Falls, Idaho, a clerk approached Ashley McCall to let her know she couldn't nurse her 6-month-old son, Cillian, on a bench in the store. McCall asked the employee if she could take her baby to the bathroom instead, but was told "it would be better if I just took him home." Complete article

Walmart Is Investing In Shopper Data: How That Will Change The Grocery Aisle 12/21/2017

It might not be able to put a price on trust, but Walmart is preparing to pay the fare for getting personal, and it could cost the entire food industry billions in shifting sales.

The world’s largest brick-and-mortar merchant has acknowledged it is lagging in the quest to personalize through the use of shopper data. Now, perhaps because of Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods, which could yield unprecedented in-store and online data models, Walmart is embarking on a “multiyear journey” to get its data in good enough shape to produce relevant personalized experiences.

“From 1 to 10 in our use of data, I would say we’re probably about a 2,” Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Walmart, recently told attendees at its annual investor conference. “We use data to improve in-stock and replenish. We don’t use data to personalize.” Complete article

Walmart's new service suggests that the company is reconsidering ‘always low prices' 12/21/2017

A Walmart subsidiary is testing a “personal shopping” service that allows customers to send text and picture messages to place orders with the store. Returns made to Code Eight are free, and they’re picked up from a customer’s home or apartment building.

But it’s not for everyone. The new service is being tested in New York City and targeted at “high net worth urban consumers,” particularly “busy NYC moms.” This ain’t the Walmart you’re used to. Complete article
