Wal-Mart Crime report October 2017

Several Walmart employees have either gotten into physical fight with shoplifters or customers or taken tantrums after being treated badly by the management that doesn't show them respect. In most cases it is difficult to know for certain that this might have something to do with their union busting tactics, but it is a possibility worth considering. They definitely have a problem with their employee training, whether it's related to union busting or not.

This doesn't mean they have problems with all their employees, of course and most of them do very good work but as one of these employees made it clear she's fed up when she doesn't get a reasonable amount of respect from management and made it clear that everyone in the store knew it. She later made it clear that she regretted disturbing others, but many people may also understand how frustrating it can be dealing with Walmart bureaucracy. Another two employees were attacked after allegedly smashing a customers bread, or attacked a customer for being disrespectful; a third one was accused of giving a black eye to a small child; and another was fired for locking a co-worker in the freezer.

There was also a story about a security guard being accused of tackling a shoplifter and making it hard for her to breathe saying, "If you can talk, you can breathe." If this report goes as many others have in the past and they need someone to blame he may fond out that the people that trained him won't even be investigated and that he'll take all the blame. It shouldn't be surprising that after cutting their workforce while increasing the size of the store that in addition to having people steal entire shopping carts without paying they now even have people attempting to steal refrigerators.

It's not unreasonable to suspect this might be more likely when large corporations are trying to squeeze all their employees and customers for every penny they can.

Walmart's crime problem have been climbing for decades and there have been many complaints about it at the grassroots level yet politicians have been ramming these stores through despite these complaints and the police often commend them for the way they've helped with the problem conveniently omitting and discussion about how they got this bad in the first place. However if people look close enough there are hints about how frustrated some police get and good reason to believe that they're under political pressure to cover for them.

There have been dozens of articles over the years about police dealing with these problems often changing their statements after meeting with representatives from Walmart or politicians; but one of the articles this month is so incredible that only the most uninformed people won't see right through it. Police in Texas have commended Walmart for their "Restorative Justice" program at the same time the same program has been exposed as "extortion" in a California court and officials in Indiana and Wisconsin have also taken steps to speak out against this outrageous program, which reduces reports of shoplifting as long as the suspects agree to pay them $400 up front for an on-line course about shoplifting or $500 in installments. Of course, many of these people can't afford it, and some of the prosecutors that have said that if they don't pay there will be no prosecution or investigation, since by declining to report it immediately Walmart makes it more difficult for the police the police to gather evidence.

Shoplifters in those states already know this program is a laughing stock; but it's a clear attempt to profit off of crime instead of trying to prevent it.

And not surprisingly, even though they decline to report many of the minor shoplifting cases, the major crimes are going up, including shootings with at least eleven this month and a total of at least one hundred for the year which is only four less than last years record breaking total.

At least one of these shootings injured a man who went to his car to get his own gun and started shooting at the store; and there were several more injuries, including at least one employee who was injured. Four of these shootings were officer involved shootings and three of those resulted in deaths, and several of them also led to chases and crashes. Two of the three shootings that led to deaths didn't take place on the premises, but they followed chases and crashes that resulted from activities that began at Walmart.

There were at least fifteen additional gun related crimes or panics, including several road rage, carjacking or hostage incidents and plenty of robberies. Some of them have led to additional chases and crashes and a pistol whipping of a robbery victim; and one incident where a cop was punched by a suspect who killed a different police officer several days later off the premises, in an incident that may not be related.

In addition to the three people killed in officer involved shootings there was another that died after struggling with police trying to arrest him and two bodies found in parking lots. There was one more death in a crash where a fleeing shoplifter abandoned his son dying in the crash to run from the police.

This means the death toll at Walmart or connected to chases that began at Walmart is at least seven for the month.

There is, of course a lot of outrage about this father who abandoned his own son to die in a crash while he fled police, and rightfully so; however there is rarely as much outrage about people that control large institution and rig them so that they ensure that wages will be suppressed for the majority while also cutting educational opportunities or social programs that address the problems that come as a result of this. This includes outrage over Walmart union busting activities or cuts in service and misleading advertising that leads to an inevitable increase in crime at their own stores.

It's easy to say this is the lame "it's societies fault" excuse; but it's not all of societies fault at all. the lion share of the fault lies at the top with the people that ahve access to the best research who don't act on it to reduce violence, instead using it to rig the economic system even more, even though this increases violence.

There were several more high speed chases or crashes and injuries on the premises, including one from last month where the video is only coming out this month where suspects were throwing electronic devices out the window as they were being chased by police, and another where someone crashed into the store, which is getting more common, like a lot of other major crimes.

There were several fires including at least one arson setting merchandise on fire and a couple vehicles bursting into flames. There were only three knife attacks listed this month, which is low, although a few years ago it would have been considered typical or perhaps high.

Just because police risk their lives, at times fighting crime at Walmart, doesn't mean that they can get away with shoplifting, although once again another officer, working off-duty as a security guard at Walmart, tried. They might not have to worry most of the time when they shoot and kill people on duty, or in many cases off duty; but if they try to steal from Walmart even using the self-check out lane, which is clearly increasing their crime problems they get prosecuted and fired just like everyone else.

Walmart must have known for years that their self-check out lanes have been increasing arguments and often take as much employee time to deal with people with problems or in extra security to catch people that try to steal at them; yet instead of cutting back on automated technology they're increasing it. ‏It doesn't take a genius to realize this will inevitably get even worse.

Walmart is being sued or targeted for crashes that happened on their premises, the opioid epidemic which they're profiting from and declining to report on excessive sales, they've had another recall due to listeria contamination which seems to happen every month or so, and an elderly greeter is demanding answers after being fired for not turning in a dollar she found on the floor on her way out of work, even though she handed it over the next day. And of course there are plenty of people that are expressing outrage of their efforts to profit off of Christmas turning a religious holiday in to a shopping frenzy which will inevitably lead to another increase in crime that happens every year in November and December, including Black Friday riots.

Walmart is receiving record breaking tax incentives for their new headquarters, giving them another government sponsored advantage over their competition and The city of Tacoma is the latest city to be stuck with a massive legal bill for standing up to Walmart, although like many other cities that have attempted to stand up to Walmart they were sued by local developers so that Walmart doesn't have to take the blame.

The result is the same this oligarchy was created with a major advantage from the government as a result of their political connections not because they keep their customers or employees happy.

Tax Payer money is subsidizing this increase in crime problem!

And, apparently buying Salmon at Walmart and a couple other major retailers is subsidizing North Korea's nuclear program since Chines processors are using slave labor contracted out from North Korea and the bulk of their wages goes to their government!

For one reason or another they also have a couple of teens pouring insecticide on children's toys; and a man that says the late Sam Walton owes him $50 decided to collect by eating donuts, Ritz crackers and drinking apple Cider on the premises, kicking over shelves, while he's at it.

For all I know he could be right; Sam Walton was famous for panhandling change from his own workers, because he didn't carry it around.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

TULLYTOWN, Pa. (CBS) — A 2-year-old boy was killed in a multi-car accident on Tuesday after police say his father crashed his car while fleeing from a Walmart theft.

Authorities say the suspect, Christopher Kuhn, of Hamilton, NJ, fled in a gold Jeep following a theft of $228 worth of merchandise from Walmart.

According to investigators, Kuhn ran a red light, t-boned another car, which then crashed into a third vehicle at Levittown Parkway and Bristol Pike. The young boy, who was in the car, was ejected into the roadway.

Kuhn ran away after the crash, police said, pausing to look at his injured son on the roadway before fleeing. Officers ran after Kuhn, catching and arresting him, while others tended to the toddler, the affidavit said. Complete article

Police: Shoplifting suspect drank a beer, ate a corn dog at Ky. Walmart 10/03/2017

SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Kentucky man is accused of shoplifting from an area Walmart, but it's what else he allegedly did that's got law enforcement officials raising eyebrows.

David Pethel, 55, "and his suspicious actions" landed him in the Bullitt County Jail recently.

The Shepherdsville Police Department posted on its Facebook page on Friday that the day before Pethel walked into the Walmart store there and caught the attention of the loss-prevention team.

NKorean workers prep seafood going to US stores, restaurants 10/04/2017

HUNCHUN, China (AP) — The workers wake up each morning on metal bunk beds in fluorescent-lit Chinese dormitories, North Koreans outsourced by their government to process seafood that ends up in American stores and homes.

Privacy is forbidden. They cannot leave their compounds without permission. They must take the few steps to the factories in pairs or groups, with North Korean minders ensuring no one strays. They have no access to telephones or email. And they are paid a fraction of their salaries, while the rest — as much as 70 percent — is taken by North Korea’s government.

This means Americans buying salmon for dinner at Walmart or ALDI may inadvertently have subsidized the North Korean government as it builds its nuclear weapons program, an AP investigation has found. Their purchases may also have supported what the United States calls “modern day slavery” — even if the jobs are highly coveted by North Koreans.

SPOKANE, Wash. - One man is dead after being shot by Spokane police officers in the parking lot of the Shadle Walmart late Wednesday afternoon.

Just after 4:45 p.m., SPD officers located a stolen 1994 Ford Explorer from a carjacking and shooting which occurred on Monday morning in the 8200 block of N. Crestline Street. The owner of the vehicle was hospitalized with gunshot wounds as a result of the carjacking.

Upon locating the vehicle, officers waited nearby while watching the occupied vehicle and waiting for other officers to respond before taking any action. Officers moved in to block the vehicle from any escape route, stop any potential pursuits, and limit safety threats to the community since the vehicle had already been involved in a carjacking and shooting two days earlier. They believed the driver of the vehicle may be armed because of this. Complete article

Hubbardston Mass. family suing Walmart over crash that killed daughter, injured son 10/05/2017

WORCESTER – The parents of a Quabbin Regional High School senior killed in a 2016 crash on Route 62 in Barre are suing Walmart, alleging that the company installed tires improperly on her vehicle.

Brittany Murch, 17, was killed, and her brother Griffin Murch, 15, seriously injured, when the car Miss Murch was driving slid off the road and struck a tree Feb. 24, 2016. The crash occurred on a day when school had been delayed two hours because of the weather, with police at the time saying icy roads may have been a factor.

The lawsuit was filed May 4 in U.S. District Court. Miss Murch’s parents, Michele and Robert, argue that the Walmart Tire & Lube center in Gardner acted negligently when it installed her tires in fall 2015. The lawsuit alleges Walmart, contrary to industry standards, installed two new tires on the front of her vehicle instead of the rear, resulting in a tread imbalance that led to the car spinning out. Judge Ronald B. Leighton ordered Tacoma to pay a little over $2 million in a ruling earlier this year, but attorney’s fees and other charges hadn’t yet been calculated at that point. Those added costs pushed the total to $2.75 million. The City Council approved the payment at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.

AMI filed the lawsuit in 2014 claiming the city, and specific council members, wrongfully applied a moratorium to permit applications that were filed to develop a Walmart in Tacoma. Complete article

Pa. Judge takes on Wal-Mart in opioids fight 10/15/2017

Hardly a sector of society has escaped being touched by the opioid epidemic.

But when it comes to large retail chains, the focus has been primarily on pharmacy policies — until now.

A Westmoreland County judge has raised an issue that she calls “the elephant in the room” — fraudulent merchandise returns that drug users make to fund their addictions.

At a recent meeting with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio singled out Wal-Mart for criticism and suggested the state be more proactive in addressing the issue.

“This is a real problem that nobody's really talked about,” she said in an interview. “Wal-Mart has to know that they are a huge part of the problem … that they are contributing to this epidemic.”

Wal-Mart did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Bilik-DeFazio said she has noticed a spike in such cases in the past few years, so much so that she has taken to calling Wednesday, the day set aside for drug pleas, “Wal-Mart court.” Complete article

Search for suspect continues after shooting at Winfield Alabama Walmart 10/15/2017

WINFIELD, AL (WBRC) - The Winfield Police Department is searching for Roman Chase Banks after a shooting Saturday at a Walmart in Winfield.

According to Chief Brett Burleson, police received a tip about a stolen car. On Saturday afternoon, a car matching the description of the stolen car was seen by police with at least two people inside. Banks was a passenger.

Burleson says officers tried to stop the car. Before that could happen, Banks forced the driver out at gunpoint and drove away.

According to Burleson, police chased Banks as he attempted to hit an officer in the Walmart parking lot. That’s when an officer fired shots at the car, hitting the rear tire. Still, Banks drove back onto the highway, leading officers on a short chase.

Burleson says Banks went off the side of the road and into the woods, where he then tried to ram another police unit and opened fire on the officers. That’s when Banks left the car and ran away. Complete article

An Open Letter to Walmart: It's Too Damn Soon to Be Pimping Christmas! 10/17/2017

I love Christmas as much as the next guy. More, probably, because the next guy looks like the kind of person who insists that you include receipts with presents you give to him, so it'll be easier for him to return the ones that suck.

But I also feel that the commercialization of Christmas is currently way more out of hand than when Linus van Pelt first dropped biblical verses on the American public — and you, Walmart, are making things worse.

As exhibit A, I offer my visit this past weekend to one of your branches in Northglenn, where I discovered that a huge portion of the store is already devoted to Christmas. Complete article

The Walton's Are Cashing Out Of Walmart - And You Should Too 10/17/2017

Last week there was a lot of stock market excitement regarding WalMart. After a "favorable" earnings report analysts turned bullish and the stock jumped ~4% in one day, WMT's biggest rally in over a year, making it a big short-term winner. But the leadership signals indicate WalMart is probably not the best place to put your money.

WalMart is growing about 3%/year. But leadership acknowledged it was not growing its traditional business in the USA, and only has plans to open ~25 stores in the next year. It hopes to add about 225 internationally, predominantly in Mexico and China, but unfortunately those markets have been tough places for WalMart to grow share and make profits. And the company has been plagued with bribery scandals, particularly in Mexico.

And, while WalMart touts its 40%+ growth rate on-line, margins online (including the free delivery offer) are even lower than in the traditional Wal-Mart stores, causing the company's gross margin percentage to decline. The $11.5B on-line revenue projection for next year is up, but it is 2.5% of Walmart's total, and a mere ~7-8% of Amazon's retail sales. Amazon remains the clear leader, with 62% of US households having visited the company in the second quarter. And it is not a good sign that WalMart's greatest on-line growth is in groceries, which amount to 26% of on-line sales already. WalMart is investing in 1,000 additional at-store curb-side grocery pick-up locations, but this effort to defend traditional store sales is in the products where margins are clearly the lowest, and possibly nonexistent. "She said I need your badge and your vest," said Ruffino. "You have been let go because of your integrity." Complete article

Dixon police arrest man after calls about gunfire in Ca. Walmart parking lot 10/18/2017

Dixon police responded to calls of a man firing a gun from inside a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot Tuesday, eventually arresting the man on three misdemeanor counts unrelated to firearm possession.

Andrew Butterworth, 32, was attempting to drive away from the parking lot at North 1st Street and Regency Parkway when police arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. In his possession were two high-powered pellet guns with lethal capabilities, according to a Dixon Police Department Facebook post, as well as a methamphetamine pipe.

Both pellet guns were virtually indistinguishable from hunting rifles, police said, and included flashlights on the top rail. But with no injuries and California law permitting over-the-counter air rifle purchases, Butterworth avoided being slapped with any charges of violent crimes. Complete article

How Artificial Intelligence helped Walmart go from 700,000 to 60 million items online 10/23/2017

Walmart.com is bigger than you might think. The site has 60 million items for sale, Walmart CTO Jeremy King said at the VB Summit in Berkeley, California today.

That’s up from 700,000 items when he joined Walmart in 2011, and it doesn’t include Jet.com, the ecommerce site Walmart acquired last year. Online sales have also made notable gains: The company reported a 67 percent year-over-year increase in quarterly online sales for the three months ending in June of this year. (That revenue growth was helped by Walmart’s Jet acquisition, though the company said the majority of its gains were organic.)

The secret to the expansion in inventory, said King, is artificial intelligence. The Arkansas-founded company uses machine learning algorithms for tasks like organizing inventory data, pricing items, and fixing problems. Complete article

'If you can talk, you can breathe': Edmonton Canada Walmart security used excessive force in woman's arrest, witness says 10/24/2017

Walmart Canada is investigating after two security guards restrained a woman who claimed to be pregnant outside an Edmonton store Sunday night — and witnesses say the men used excessive force.

The woman, who remains unidentified, was taken to hospital and treated for "non-life-threatening injuries" and later charged with theft under $5,000.

The incident began at about 9 p.m. when the woman left the Walmart store at Stony Plain Road and 184th Street.

She was followed outside by loss prevention officers. After a struggle, the two men pushed the woman face down in the parking lot.

Each guard held one of the woman's arms behind her back. Both knelt on her back. On a video recorded by a witness, the woman could be heard screaming "I can't breathe."

One guard replied, "If you can talk, you can breathe."

The same guard was then heard talking with a bystander who questioned his use of force.

"Then call 911 and charge me," he told the bystander. Complete article

Arkansas tax incentives may be historic for new Wal-Mart headquarters 10/25/2017

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores recently announced plans to build a new headquarters in Bentonville, meaning the world’s largest retailer will likely receive the largest tax incentive package in Arkansas history, reports Arkansas Talk Business & Politics.

Although no price tag has been set for the project by Wal-Mart officials, state economic development officials and site consultant experts agree the amount of tax incentives will largely depend on the total cost of such a development.

AEDC spokesman Jeff Moore would not comment specifically on possible tax breaks the state may offer Wal-Mart, but did say “any and all” incentives are available to expanding or relocating companies, granted they meet the qualifications. Complete article

Fired Walmart employee speaks out about her tantrum 10/26/2017

“I felt really disrespected. I felt out of place. I felt like they were antagonizing me,” she said.

That’s when she became frustrated.

“I was seeing red,” Terica said. “When I first saw the video, It kind of was embarrassing for me cause I’ve never really acted like that.”

Terica says the reason she acted out inside the store was because she felt disrespected by a coworker.

“She was literally telling me what to do. Like go here, do this, do that. It was really horrible. My third week there, I told them I know I’m new here and I shouldn't be having problems with anyone but I don’t like how she’s treating me when she’s talking to me.”

She claims that conflict was never addressed by her bosses.

“They told me to just get over it because their priority was to make sure the front end of the store was situated and that the customers felt welcome.”

Walmart rolls out new shelf-scanning robots 10/26/2017

The approximately 2-foot robots come with a tower that is fitted with cameras that scan aisles to check stock and identify missing and misplaced items, incorrect prices and mislabeling. The robots pass data to store employees, who then stock the shelves and fix errors.

Why are some police departments helping Walmart with their public relations mentioning the declines in calls but not the sharp increases of that the declines are becasue they stop reporting them?

Arlington Tx. Police, Walmart Gain International Attention for Shoplifting Program 10/29/2017

As Assistant Police Chief over Arlington PD's field operations, it's Kevin Kolbye's job to take a big picture look at the problems plaguing the community and come up with new strategies to eliminate them.

Back in 2015, he noticed his officers were spending a lot of time responding to calls at big retailers like Walmart.

"When we started looking at crime drivers in Arlington, a lot of it was shoplifting and thefts," said Kolbye. ......

“We’re encouraged by a 35% reduction in calls to law enforcement agencies nationwide, on average, since we began implementing Restorative Justice and other crime deterrence programs. We’ll continue our outreach to law enforcement across the country as part of our ongoing commitment to meet our customers’ and associates’ expectations of a safe and enjoyable shopping experience.” Complete article

Not all police departments are as optimistic about this program as this one seems to be and they often tell a different story before meeting with Walmart executives or people from the political establishment. As I pointed out in Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime it's not hard to find more reliable information as long as people don't rely on traditional media.

Restorative Justice for Shoplifting? A Court Calls It Extortion 10/30/2017

A company’s program, used by Walmart and others, bypasses the cops. By Jessica Pishko

The shoplifter was caught red-handed at the California Walmart and taken to a back room by a store employee. Until recently, the next step might have been a call to the police, but, instead, the shoplifter was offered another option.

He was shown a short video about how terrible a criminal record would be. He was told that if he confessed to his crime and agreed to participate in a privately run diversion program—six hours of online behavior therapy—he could avoid arrest, a fine or worse. The cost was $400. The shoplifter would be billed. He signed up.

Later, it turned out, he didn’t have the money, not even the $50 minimum installment required to keep his case out of court. And while eventually he did end up in court, it was not as a defendant but as evidence in a 2015 suit brought by the San Francisco City Attorney, who asserted that the tactics used by the company, Corrective Education Company, were illegal. In fact, the City Attorney, Dennis Herrera, equated CEC’s business model with “a Hobson’s choice, which is really no choice at all.”

“This company has set up a private, pseudo-justice system that is based on profit,” he said, calling the program “textbook extortion.”

A Superior Court judge in San Francisco agreed.

In a ruling in mid-August, Judge Harold Kahn, barred CEC from operating in California, where the company has about 20 percent of its business. Complete article

Walmart is making a push to grow its advertising by positioning itself as a media platform.

Walmart’s pitch is that it controls transaction data from customers, which can help brands retarget consumers off Walmart.com, according to executives familiar with the matter. The big differentiator being pitched is Walmart’s brick-and-mortar locations — fulfilling a big promise of retail media that it can connect online with offline. And Walmart is making it count, trumpeting its combination of scale and offline data as a differentiator from Amazon. It’s doing that via more meetings with buyers, as well as at learning sessions and summits it’s holding with brands and agencies. Complete article
