Walmart Crime Report January 2024

Walmart had at least seventeen more shootings in January 2024, related to their business, with four of them fatal, and since one was a murder suicide, this comes to five shooting related deaths. Sixteen of those shootings, including three of the fatal ones were on their property, but the seventeenth one involved an argument that began on their property and actually led to two other shootings elsewhere after those involved in the argument left the premises, and one of the deaths was related to this. There were also at least nine injuries related to these shootings. One of these shootings involved a vigilante shooting at a victims car as it was being stolen, others involved carjackings, robberies or shopliftings, drug deals, domestic disputes and angry customers.

Three of these shootings took place on the same day near the end of the month, and one media outlet actually reported on this, which rarely if ever happens even though this has happened close to if not more than a dozen times before, including at least two times where there were four shootings in the same day. Just last month there were three shootings at Walmarts two days before Christmas, then again on New Years Eve and all three of those were inside the stores, which is very rare; yet traditional media declined to report on how often this happens. When they did report on three shootings in one day they made a point of saying that since they had so many stores it's inevitable they would have to deal with the countries epidemic of shootings, which is true; but tehy didn't report on the fact that statistically Walmart has more crime, including shootings, than any other store. There's also another lawsuit about a Walmart shooting last October, which is semi-routine, since many other families of victims have also sued Walmart in the past.

In addition to the five deaths at Walmart, counting one that resulted from a Walmart argument with a shooting nearby but not on their property, there ware two bodies found in their parking lots, one person stabbed to death and another person that died as a result of a medical emergency which led to a major crash into the store, bringing the total deaths to at least nine. There was also a report of a death at Walmart two years ago when Walmart refused to let a worker go home when she was sick and she died at the end of her shift in the bathroom, but this got very little attention at the time, which is a reminder that these are minimum number of deaths or shootings, since we have no way of knowing how many more were virtually ignored by the media.

Walmart also had over half a dozen, if not a dozen other gun crimes, including robberies, a few guns found on their shelves, including a civil war reproduction gun, at least one hidden by a robbery suspect, false alarms, and a panic that led to a lock down at a couple local schools.

Complaints about self-checkout, receipt checks and a variety of other theft prevention tactics at Walmart are constantly going viral on the internet and it's even working it's way into traditional media. For the record, if you head from the register to the door after you're done, as most people including myself do, there should be no reason to ask for a receipt unless they have probable cause, and you should be able to end it without showing your receipt by simply asking if they have probable cause. If they don't they almost certainly don't have any legal right to go any further; but that's not a guarantee that they won't even if it's a cop, who should know the law, asking for a receipt. Last summer when a cop demanded a receipt and the paying customer said he had one, and kept going because he didn't feel obligated to stop, rightfully, the cop tackled him and was disciplined by the police department and there's a current lawsuit over the case.

There have been several recent reports indicating that prison labor is being used to increase corporate profits, including many of Walmart suppliers, making them beneficiaries over a slave system still allowed under the Thirteenth Amendment in an exemption for convicted felons. Little or no discussion is taking place about the fact that our economic system is designed to virtually entrap the poor under rules or laws made by the rich. This includes laws escalating petty theft to felonies when they're repeated, but ignoring most wage theft or other corporate fraud most of the time, and treating it as a civil matter, instead of a criminal matter, on the rare cases where they're taken to court. It also ignores the fact that many of Walmart's policies, including cutting employees, self-checkout, and store design among other things inevitably causes their higher crime problems, making this virtual entrapment.

More stories continue to pour in about people buying gift cards at Walmart and having their funds drained before they can use it. This is because Walmart never tried to make them secure in the first place, yet they refuse to take responsibility for it and they often get the profits from selling the cards while thieves steal all the funds. In some cases when Walmart has been caught at scams they refunded money after publicity is drawn to it, but to the best of my knowledge this isn't happening in this case. They're enabling the thieves with their insecure practices, yet there's no accountability, increasing the belief that laws are made only for the poor, not the rich, which may not be entirely true, but it's close; there are many ways to rig the economy for the rich and it's legal because of their ties to politicians, not any claims about "justice."

Walmart has also found more skimming devices on their card readers, which is now routine, and, once again, they refuse to either secure their card readers or take responsibility for losses. This is much more common on self-checkout card readers, but has happened at regular registers when they distract the cashier, or use other methods. This means that those installing them can gain access to customer data and make charges to the card without customers consent. In some cases the bank involved may have security or insurance so they take responsibility, but Walmart doesn't stop it, and if the bank doesn't cancel purchases the customer is accountable.

Walmart also had a bottle throwing brawl at one store, someone attacking people with a broom at another, and a third store where a man began burning or painting things around the store, which freaked people out.

In at least two cases where poor parents were caught acting in a manner that was considered inappropriate there were massive efforts to shame them but none to help teach them how to care for their children or avoid pushing them into desperate situations. This may seem acceptable to some people, but good researchers have shown how to solve many social problems and save an enormous amount of money at the same time. Some of this was written about by Lisbeth Schorr author of "Within Our Reach" and "Common Purpose" and other research from James Garbarino, Robert Zagar, and many other researchers shows that it's far more effective to solve social problems before they escalate, yet the media never covers this research and politicians refuse to make policies based on good research. Lisbeth Schorr's books used to be available free on the Internet Archive, but they made it unavailable for borrowing because of a copyright lawsuit making it even harder to educate the public about solving social problems, and showing that profits for rich people is far more important to the courts and politicians than the best interests of the majority!

There were also various assaults, kidnapping attempts, shopliftings and many other crimes at Walmart as well. One child was robbed of hyped up over priced Air Jordan shoes or sneakers. There's little or no discussion about the possibility that hyping up products is contributing to these crimes, even though they've been happening for well over twenty-five years, and the high prices are clearly based on advertising not value or quality of these sneakers. There should be no doubt that advertising hype contributes to crime, including some violent crime; but those with political power profit from it, so discussing it is off-limits in mainstream media.

A cop in Colorado who punched a woman while off-duty and out of uniform a few months ago is back on-duty, even though he was allegedly "disciplined" despite the fact that this violent assault indicates he shouldn't be a police officer. A County politician was charged with shoplifting at Walmart, and much swifter and permanent action was taken against him; the same goes for police caught shoplifting at Walmart, which happens at least a few times every year. If they attack the poor there's little or no accountability for police but if they steal from powerful corporations they're quickly and permanently fired, showing an obvious double standard.

One of their delivery drivers was accused of stealing half the order of a customers, which isn't the first time this happened, and they keep getting caught overcharging for merchandise so people are warned to check their receipts. in addition to the fatal accident there were at close to if not more than a dozen other major accidents, including one where the driver who crashed into the store barricaded himself in the car for hours, chases, stolen vehicles, hit and runs, carjackings, including one at knife point, drunk drivings and other automobile related crimes.

There were also a couple car fires, but surprisingly few other fires, except for the man setting small fires and painting odd items in the store, which is fewer fires than at least six to eight years, if not longer. But there were a few more knife attacks at their stores, including at least two stabbings and one other knife threat in addition to the fatal stabbing mentioned earlier.

In addition to the old scams that Walmart doesn't take responsibility for they allegedly could be hitting customers with "phantom debt" as a result of a new self-checkout policy allowing people to buy now and pay later, although there's not much information available about how much interest they charge or if it's higher than traditional charge cards, which are already as bad as loan sharks.

Walmart had new recalls for both snacks and half a million beds which have been breaking or collapsing. They're also facing various lawsuits including state suits related to opioids, false accusations of shoplifting, sex discrimination, and for an employee filming people in the bathrooms, which has happened on numerous occasions around the country.

Do you feel the sudden urge to work a full day at Walmart for free and brag about it on Social Media? What kind of idiot would do that?

If you order perishable groceries delivered from Walmart do you expect them to wait for hours outside in the heat waiting for a ride?

Have you ever had your horse and buggy stolen from Walmart?

Have any former employees used the PA system to quit or come back after being fired to announce they're "signing out?" This has actually become semi-routine across the country.

How often do two goats wander into your local store, to shop or for any other reason? how about any other animals? This is also semi-routine.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in January 2024. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

NEED TO STOP ‘I shouldn’t have to line up to leave,’ says Walmart shopper & accuses chain of turning ‘into Costco’ with receipt check 01/01/2024

A SHOPPER slammed Walmart, saying the company is trying to turn into Costco over its long lines just to get a receipt checked.

Many customers have expressed frustration with having their receipts checked when leaving a store with some even wondering the legality of it all.

In certain stores that require a membership such as Costco or Sam's Club, it's normal for a worker to check a customer's receipt.

However, many Walmart shoppers complain that receipt checking has gotten out of control.

"Hey @WalmartCanada when did you turn into Costco?" wrote a customer on X, formerly known as Twitter, back in 2019.

"Private security guard at Richmond Hill Bayview-Major Mac store is stopping everyone and checking their receipt and items purchased. Shouldn't have to line up to leave a Walmart!" Complete article

I work at Target and Walmart — for free — because I love to clean bathrooms 01/03/2024

If cleanliness is next to godliness, she’s a down and dirty deity.

Scrubbing caked up guck, excrement and filth off of public bathroom floors isn’t a popular pastime for most big box store patrons. But one anti-slop shopper is kicking off the new year by dedicating her free time and tidying expertise to beautifying the toilets, shelves and aisle of high-traffic hot spots.

“I worked at a random Target for free,” announced an online altruist known as @Ugh_Madison, to an audience of over 4.3 million Instagram Reels watchers.

“I got there at 1:00 p.m. ready to work,” continued the brunette, who isn’t an official employee of the retail giant, “I made sure to go above and beyond for my customers.” .....

Woman Destroys Parents’ Living Room after Getting Wrong Party Popper from Walmart 01/08/2024

A Walmart customer recorded the exact moment her and her family realized she accidentally got a powder New Year's popper; not a confetti one.

Amber Stevens (@amstevens21) just wanted to spend New Year's Eve with her mom and dad and record a cute video showing the three of them ring in 2024 with a toast and ceremonial blast of confetti.

Instead, they accidentally staged a gender reveal party for a boy after Amber failed to realize she got the wrong kind of party popper, resulting in an unwieldy mess that, days after the unfortunate incident, reared its blue, powdery head.

Amber recorded the unfortunate incident and uploaded it to TikTok. It begins with her counting down from 9 to usher in 2024, completely unaware of the havoc that's about to befall her and her family.

A text overlay in the video is a source of situational tension for viewers who just know something bad is going to happen once she lets what she thinks is a confetti popper rip into the living room.

"POV: Walmart substitutes your confetti poppers for smoke ones," Amber writes. After the countdown, she makes a toast with her family and they all take a sip from their respective cups. She then grabs the popper and the other people in the room follow suit. They get themselves situated and prepare for the coordinated pop-off. Complete article

HOLD UP ‘This should be illegal,’ Walmart shopper fumes over self-checkout receipt option that left him ‘held hostage in store’ 01/08/2024

A WALMART shopper has blasted the retailer and claimed they were held hostage while their receipt was checked.

The self-checkout user fumed that the machine didn’t give the option of choosing a paper receipt.

In recent months, many social media users have taken to X, formerly Twitter, and platforms such as TikTok to complain about receipt checks.

Walmart is just one retailer that gives customers the option of receiving a paper or an electronic receipt.

But, shopper @PhiRusCan, whose profile says they live in Kalispell, Montana, was bewildered by the choice as receipt checks are carried out at the store they were at.

“Why do you offer a digital receipt at self-checkout when the door guard demands a paper receipt?” they asked. Complete article

The video slamming Walmart's receipt-checking policy was liked over 12,000 times on TikTok

An angry TikToker has slammed Walmart's receipt check policy in this widely circulated video. In the clip, the account owner of the @realtrustmeimalawyer handle detailed a run-in he had with an overly physical Walmart manager.

The TikToker said he always refuses to show receipts after shopping in stores with receipt check policies. This stance, he said, is something he won't change, telling Walmart that they can "pound sand."

"If you're like me, I don't do it. I'm not showing you my receipt," he said in the popular video. "If I'm good enough to check out all of my groceries, bag it and everything else, and practically have to go back into the stock room and do all my own stocking and everything - no, I'm not showing you my receipt." "I want to share some crap about Walmart," said TikToker Amanda Gagnon (@yourfavoritewaitress) in a recent clip.

In the video, an on-screen caption that read "self checkouts" remained above her head as she ranted about the current state of Walmart's self-service technology.

"You are your own cashier, it's all self-checkout," Amanda claimed.

"And they always want to check your receipt to make sure you actually paid for whatever you're purchasing, right." Complete article

Those eligible will receive nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care, according to the program.

WIC state agencies send out WIC electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards for those who qualify for the program. ....

Walmart is bringing drone deliveries to 1.8 million more Texas households 01/09/2024

almart is expanding its drone delivery program to 1.8 million more households in Texas. The retailer says its drone deliveries now cover 75 percent of the population in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, all thanks to partnerships with drone startups Wing and Zipline.

Walmart launched its drone delivery program with Zipline and DroneUp in Arkansas in 2021 before expanding it to more states in 2022. The newly expanded service in Texas allows customers living within 10 miles of a participating Walmart to get items delivered to their homes via drone.

Since there is a weight limit, customers can only have smaller products like cold medicine, birthday candles, and even a carton of eggs delivered. Walmart says deliveries arrive in 30 minutes or less, with some reaching customers’ doorsteps in as fast as 10 minutes. Complete article

Texas man says he lost $355 ordering Nintendo Switch from Walmart 01/11/2024

The man said a mix-up with the shipment, along with Walmart's practice of allowing third parties to sell on its site, led to his loss of funds.

A Texas man is speaking out after he says he lost over $300 after ordering a Nintendo Switch gaming system on Walmart's website via a third-party seller hosted on the platform.

Michael Morrison said he placed the order in late 2023, hoping to have the gaming console shipped to his home in time for Christmas as a gift to his daughter.

Morrison told KPRC he got a notice from the site saying a shipping label was created, but said he never received the item in the days that followed.

"I started thinking, 'Well, it's not going to get here in time for Christmas.' So I canceled the order and Walmart immediately credited me the $355. And then I thought I was done," he said.

But it wasn't over, he said.

The seller had a 2.5 out of 5 rating on Walmart's website with a list of complaints, and Morrison, an IT professional, wants to warn users to pay attention to ratings and feedback on the site — and to be aware, if they didn't realize it, that Walmart hosts third-party sellers on the site. On Your Side: Euless woman says Walmart gift card was drained; others experience similar issue 01/10/2024

EULESS, Texas - If you received a Walmart gift card this holiday season, one local woman warns that you need to check the balance on the card immediately.

The funds on her gift card were drained before she could use it.

"I'm not gonna shop at Walmart anymore. Which really makes me sad," said Toni Tucker of Euless.

During a visit to her local store, she made a return without a receipt.

"Since I didn't have my receipt, my only option was to be issued a gift card," Tucker explained.

When she went to use the card, the entire amount had been drained.

"They printed out a transaction history for me, which showed my gift card was used in December from store 9115," Tucker said.

We should point out that 9115 is not a store identifier, but instead, according to a Walmart spokesperson, an internal code to identify an online purchase. Complete article

OUT OF THE GAME I was falsely accused of stealing from Walmart self-checkout – I’m a ‘retired klepto’ but this time I was innocent 01/12/2024

A RETIRED kleptomaniac has slammed Walmart's self-checkout for accusing her of stealing after she reformed her ways.

TikToker Alexis Garcia assured her followers that this latest shopping spectacle wasn't her fault.

Walmart continues to implement new anti-theft technology at self-checkout to make a dent in the industry's $100 billion shoplifting problem.

One measure includes mirrors that are set up where a shopper has to watch themselves scan items, making them think twice before missing a scan.

And another update plaguing lawless shoppers is cameras installed in the kiosks that watch every move of a customer.

However, the technology isn't completely foolproof, as many people have come forward and said they were falsely accused of stealing. Complete article

Walmart Spark shoppers can remove their tips up to 24 hours after delivery. Drivers say that contributes to a problem of 'tip baiting.' 01/11/2024

Some delivery customers offer tips they don't intend to pay to trick drivers into taking an order.
This "tip baiting" isn't new, but drivers say it's especially bad on Walmart's Spark platform.
Walmart says only a small percentage of orders have tips lowered and tips are more often increased.

One Indiana delivery worker can recall just a few times when someone took away his tip after he delivered their Instacart order over his past 2½ years as a gig worker.

When he works for Walmart's Spark Driver delivery app, it happens a few times a week, he told Business Insider.

"On Spark, it is a much more prevalent thing," he said. "I keep a notes app in my phone with the tip baiters, and then I search the address when I get an offer to make sure it's not going to one of those people." Complete article

Walmart settles sex discrimination lawsuit, agrees to $60,000 payout and policy changes 01/11/2024

As part of the settlement, the company will conduct training for relevant management employees on federal laws prohibiting sex discrimination.

DES MOINES, Iowa — In an announcement, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission disclosed that Walmart has agreed to settle a sex discrimination lawsuit by paying $60,000 and implementing other relief measures. The settlement stems from the EEOC's allegations that Walmart, at its Ottumwa, Iowa store, denied a promotion to an employee for the position of department manager based on gender stereotypes related to women with young children.

According to evidence presented by the EEOC, the employee inquired about the reasons for being passed over for the promotion. In response, a store official reportedly mentioned the employee's status as a mother with young children, assuming she lacked long-term commitment to advancing her career at Walmart. Instead, Walmart promoted another woman who did not have children.

The EEOC said that such actions violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination. This includes discrimination based on sex-based stereotypes, such as the assumption that mothers are unreliable or less committed employees. The lawsuit (Civil Action No. 4:22-cv-00037-SMR-SBJ) was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, Central Division, after the EEOC's attempt to reach a pre-litigation settlement through conciliation was unsuccessful. Mobile homeless: A view from living at the 'Walmart Hotel' 01/14/2024

TRAVERSE CITY — It’s nearing 11 p.m. — Chris Pearce’s bedtime at the “Walmart Hotel.”

Because the windows in his room — a rusty 2012 Ford Escape — lack curtains or blinds, Pearce covers them with pizza box tops and prepares to bed down for the night in the rear of the Walmart parking lot. It’s 32 degrees outside and not much warmer inside.

If the cold wakes him up, Pearce will fire up the engine and flip the heat on high for 15 to 20 minutes. Otherwise, he has a sleeping bag, a couple of blankets, and a traveling companion, a 70-pound, 5-year-old yellow lab beagle mix named Maxwell who, on this one-dog night, will plop himself onto Pearce’s lap.

Pearce, 40, is a member of the so-called “mobile homeless,” a subclass of unhoused residents who, often for reasons of safety and privacy, shun crowded shelters and tent encampments in favor of living in their cars, even during the winter.

Nationally, according to a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report that was issued to Congress last month, homelessness increased by an alarming 12 percent in 2023, with more than 653,000 people in the United States living without a permanent roof over their heads. Of that number, the report said, six in 10 people lived in shelters or transitional housing, while the remaining four in 10 “were experiencing unsheltered homelessness in places not meant for human habitation.” Complete article

How Walmart is fighting back against gift card scams 01/15/2024

US government already reimbursed consumers $4M.

The frequency of gift card scams has risen sharply in recent years, but America's biggest retailer has devised a way to prevent thieves from getting away with free money.

So far, it has made a notable difference.

In 2018, Walmart developed a proprietary technology, called Redemption, to try to cut down on the deluge of victim-assisted gift-card fraud incidents that were occurring around the nation.

It was developed after Walmart's law enforcement response team fielded an influx of calls about victims who were being tricked into getting a Walmart gift card, loading it with money and giving the pin or gift card number to bad actors.

Victim-assisted gift card fraud is just one of a significant number of gift card scams that have become increasingly common in recent years. In fact, reports of gift card fraud jumped 50% in 2023 compared with the year prior, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Complete article

Once she began working, she started to feel unusually faint. As the hours wore on, she told her co-workers she wasn’t feeling well, and retreated to a bathroom for rest. But the store was short-staffed, and her manager allegedly told her to “pull herself together.”

Janikka had heart problems and diabetes—conditions management was aware of—and had worked through ailments before, because that’s the norm at Walmart. As recently as 2019, the company allowed employees to accrue nine penalizing points every six months before firing them. Today, it’s five. Workers receive those points for a whole host of reasons, like showing up late, leaving early, or taking unplanned time off, even if they’re sick or need to attend an important family function.

But Janikka rarely missed work or went home early. She once left her own birthday party to go to work, leaving loved ones to vent that Walmart was taking too much of her time. One of her sons, Austin, once pleaded with his mom to quit. “She was like, ‘Who else is going to pay the bills and put clothes on your back?’” he said. “I couldn’t say nothing else.”

Her commitment to Walmart came second only to church. No matter her schedule, Janikka never missed Sunday service at her local congregation. Each week, she would sing and pray in front of the pulpit’s large illuminated cross. On the morning of that shift in January, she attended mass with her mother, Fay, then wished her goodbye. “Mommy, I love you,” she said on her way out the door. “I’ll see you later.”

Hours later, as night set in and Janikka’s shift neared its end, she withdrew to a stall in one of Walmart’s white-tiled restrooms for the second time in as many hours. Eighty-seven minutes later, at 11:21 p.m., she dialed 911 from the bathroom.

“I’m having difficulty breathing,” she told a dispatcher between coughs. “I feel like I’m about to pass out.”

When an ambulance arrived, nine minutes after Janikka called, medics found her unconscious. They later rushed her to St. Vincent North Hospital, where she was pronounced dead of a heart attack. She was 38. Complete article

So, two goats walk into an Ariz. Walmart... 01/15/2024

A pair of visitors showed up at Walmart on Wednesday afternoon, apparently on the hunt for strawberries, watermelons, carrots and celery. But it wasn't to be.

Someone called the cops and they ended up in the back of a patrol car. But instead of getting arrested, they were taken home.

Sahuarita Police Lt. Michael Falquez said dispatchers received a call shortly after 4 p.m. about a pair of goats wandering into the store just like any other customer.

"(An employee) told me they were trying to head to the produce section, probably for something to eat," Falquez said.

An officer placed the goats into the back of a squad car and contacted the Arizona Department of Agriculture.

The goats' owner, Cheresa Green of Tucson, said she'd just purchased them about a week ago from a Sahuarita woman. They're being kept in Sahuarita until construction on their new home is finished, Green said. Complete article

How Walmart’s Financial Services Became a Fraud Magnet 01/17/2024

Scammers have duped consumers out of more than $1 billion by exploiting Walmart’s lax security. The company has resisted taking responsibility while breaking promises to regulators and skimping on training.

Christy Browne was in a panic. The man on the phone said he was from the FBI. He warned her that drug traffickers had obtained her Social Security number and were using it to launder money. He said the FBI needed money to catch them.

“They told me not to go to local law enforcement,” Browne testified in court recently about the February 2020 call. The police were watching her and considered her a suspect, the man said.

At his direction, Browne, a retired elementary school teacher who lives in upstate New York, bought four $500 Walmart gift cards at her local Walmart. It was 3:15 pm. She took photos of the serial numbers and PINs on the back and texted them to the man on the phone. With that information, the fraudster had access to $2,000.

That was only the first step. The gift card numbers were then sold to Qinbin Chen, a Chinese national living in Virginia. At 5:47 pm, Chen passed the numbers to a co-conspirator waiting near a Walmart in Sterling, Virginia.

Just eight minutes later, at 5:55, the accomplice did something that an ordinary consumer would rarely do, but which is routine for fraudsters: use one gift card to buy another. With the numbers from Browne’s Walmart cards, he purchased Apple, Google Play and other gift cards at the store’s self-checkout kiosk. He sent the serial numbers and PINs for those cards to Chen, who then sold them to a buyer in China. Transferring the money to other companies’ gift cards for use in another country made it impossible for Walmart to figure out where the funds ended up. Browne had no way to recover her $2,000. WALSMARTS ‘No obligations,’ Walmart shopper says she knows her rights when workers demand a receipt – and law ‘protects customer’ 01/16/2024

A KNOWLEDGEABLE Walmart shopper shared what is not allowed during receipt checks at stores.

It is crucial to be informed of your rights when it comes to receipt checks as Walmart has implemented the procedure at most stores.

It can feel as if you are obligated to show your receipt to the insisting Walmart worker while walking out.

However, TikToker Rebecca Symone (@rebeccasymone_) explained this is not always the case when considering the laws.

“You are not obligated to stop for anyone as you exit any store. Refusal to show a receipt is NOT probable cause to be detained,” the caption of the video said.

“You have a criminal and civil suit if your rights are violated.” Complete article

Walmart customer 'furious' as 'very ignorant' staff hold him 'hostage' in store 01/18/2024

The Walmart receipt check policy is very unpopular with many customers.

A Walmart customer has told of his fury after being held 'hostage' in a store after buying a television alongside his son. The store's receipt check policy, which is designed to curb shoplifting, has been extremely unpopular with many shoppers, and Senti Rasa has blasted the 'very ignorant' staff who he said discriminated against him.

The real-estate investor purchased a television worth $344.09 in a Walmart last Monday. Upon bringing the item to the cashier, the staff member had to call for assistance to remove the anti-theft device on the packaging of the television.

The issue was resolved and when the 52-year-old headed for the exit, he was asked to present his receipt by a door greeter. "I asked what do you need to see my receipt for, I've already paid for it, you can ask the (cashier)," the Sri Lankan native told Orilla Matters.

"I kept walking and suddenly another greater got in my face and was holding my buggy and said I wasn't leaving, holding me hostage," he continued, describing his experience at the store in Orillia, Canada. Rasa said that the store manager, with four or five other staff members in town, approached him and said the store policy was to check receipts, in a similar manner to Costco. Complete article

‘I would clock out and go home‘: Walmart criticized for giving workers 55-cent ramen noodles for coming into work during blizzard 01/16/2024

An arctic blast has affected much of the country, with multiple places falling below 0 temperatures. While many residents are being urged to stay indoors, people whose workplaces didn’t close due to the weather had to brace the storm to trek to work.

TikToker Millzy (@hiitsmillzy) highlighted one such workplace in a TikTok video that was viewed nearly half-a-million times. A Walmart in Rockford, Illinois, where the temperature has been below freezing (around 11am CT, it was -6 degrees Fahrenheit), shared a post featuring two of its employees standing behind several cases of ramen noodles. “Brr it’s cold outside. We appreciate our associates for braving the cold to be here. Stay warm with some ramen noodle soup and crackers,” the location wrote to accompany the photo.

“Walmart, you are a Fortune 500 company—on the top of the list; you are a multi-billion dollar corporation. And your way to show your appreciation is to give your employees 55-cent ramen?” Millzy questioned. “People walking to work, in -18 degree weather. Some people don’t have cars. Some peoples cars didn’t start, and they still showed up to work, somehow, someway, so they could get a paycheck.”

Walmart workers commiserated in the comments section, sharing what they’ve received from the store in exchange for clocking in for undesirable shifts. “I worked at walmart up until a few weeks ago. we had to work on christmas, and our christmas ‘bonus’ was a ten cent temu pin,” one shared.

“I worked 3rd shift at walmart and we were lucky if we got the left over pizza from first shift that had been sitting out all day,” another said.

“I remember working deli at Walmart and they forced us to cook pizza for other departments we didn’t even get any of it,” another said. Complete article

Four charged in Walmart gift card crime ring, leader caught with nearly 7,000 cards in Tarrant County, police say 01/19/2024

Police say the suspects would steal the information off of valid gift cards, repackage them, and return them to their displays, waiting for them to be purchased.

COLLEYVILLE, Texas — The Colleyville Police Department says four people were arrested in connection with a fraud ring involving altered Walmart gift cards.

The investigation began on July 12, 2023, when an elderly victim from Colleyville sent a $100 Walmart gift card to a friend in Louisiana, the department said. But a week later, when the friend attempted to use the gift card - it had no balance, according to police.

Colleyville PD says the number stamped on the gift card did not match the number on the gift card authorization receipt.

Investigators say they quickly discovered the victim’s gift card was cloned to match a different Walmart gift card.

The victim’s $100 was spent by one of the suspects to buy beer and a KitchenAid Stand Mixer at two separate Tarrant County Walmarts, according to police.

Less than one week later, Colleyville PD says they learned about another local victim who purchased a $50 Walmart gift card for a fellow church member but that it had no balance when the recipient attempted to redeem it a few days later. Complete article

A viral video appears to show Walmart Spark shoppers with perishable groceries waiting for a ride in the Arizona sun 01/19/2024

A viral video appears to show Walmart Spark workers leaving perishable groceries in the sun.
The video, posted last week on YouTube, was filmed in the parking lot of an Arizona Walmart.
Some Spark drivers appear to be using fraudulent identities, as Business Insider previously reported.

A video from a gig-work YouTuber is getting attention for showing two individuals who appear to be Walmart Spark contractors waiting in a parking lot as their carts containing milk and other groceries sit in the sun.

The video, posted on January 6 by the account "Uber Lyft Phoenix" on YouTube, shows two apparent Spark shoppers resting on a wall at a Walmart in Chandler, Arizona. In front of them are two carts full of household essentials, including a jug of detergent and a gallon of milk.

Over half a million beds sold at Walmart and Wayfair get recalls because of ‘breaking, sagging or collapsing’ 01/18/2024

More than a half a million beds sold at retailers like Walmart and Wayfair are under recall because they can break during use, which has resulted in dozens of injuries.

The recall impacts several different models and sizes of upholstered low profile standard and platform beds from Home Design, Inc. The Silver Lake, Indiana-based furniture wholesaler says it has received 128 reports of these beds “breaking, sagging or collapsing” when used, including 36 unspecified injuries to date.

Both Home Design and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission are urging consumers with the now-recalled beds to stop using them immediately — and contact the company for free replacement slats and side rails.

Consumers can identify if their bed is being recalled checking the list of impacted models and corresponding part number, which can be found on both the CPSC’s Thursday recall notice and on Home Design’s website. To receive the free repair kit, you’ll need to email Home Design photos of the bed or proof of purchase as well as the headboard’s “law label.”

The recalled beds, which were manufactured in Malaysia, were sold at Wayfair, Walmart.com and Overstock.com between July 2018 and November 2023. Prices ranged from $100 to $300. Complete article

Washington man accused of hiding, wreaking havoc in Sullivan Missouri Walmart 01/21/2024

A Washington man was arrested last week after allegedly hiding in the Sullivan Walmart until the store closed, then emerging from his hiding place to throw things at employees and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Michael Douglas, 51, allegedly hid in the Walmart, knowing he was not supposed to be there, until after the store closed at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. He then left his hiding place, damaging a flower pot in the garden section, and made his way to the front of the store.

He knocked over several items before a store associate made contact with him and told him he was not allowed to be in the store, at which point Douglas “became irate,” according to online court records.

Douglas allegedly began walking through the Walmart throwing items at store employees, then left the building, before asking for a lighter once outside.

When employees said they did not have a lighter, Douglas allegedly re-entered the store, threatening to steal one. Once back inside the store, he allegedly continued knocking over more items and throwing more items, including a glass bottle, at employees. Complete article

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS ‘I’m so sick of seeing this argument,’ Walmart manager says and confirms truth about shoppers stopping for receipt check 01/23/2024

AN INFLUENCER has set the record straight on Walmart's receipt checking policy after getting fed up with seeing misinformation online.

Walmart and several big-ticket retailers have instituted receipt-checking policies in recent years as a part of their extended theft prevention strategies.

An influencer has given a straightforward response to Walmart shoppers who are unsure of whether employees have the right to stop them for a receipt check.

Misty Rain (@misty.rainofficial) shared a TikTok video clarifying that Walmart policy directs employees not to force customers to have a receipt check under any circumstances.

But many shoppers have taken to social media to complain about the policy and claim that it infringes on their personal right to privacy and can make them feel like they are being treated like criminals.

Although laws applying to receipt checking vary in every state, several legal experts have also shared their various professional opinions on whether staff at stores like Walmart have the right to stop customers to ask for a receipt. Complete article

Now, she has returned to where it all began, only this time, Lewis brought company.

After a hospital visit ended with him in a wheelchair, Duncan declared he needed a “strong female presence” to help with his recovery — Lewis. The two then headed to Walmart to see what mischief could be made.

Walmart decides to shut down a key part of its business 01/23/2024

Walmart paid $3.3 billion in 2016 to buy Jet.com, a fledgling digital retailer that had spent a lot of money, but not generated much in the way of sales.

It was a curious move at the time, and many Walmart executives were against the move, but CEO Doug McMillon understood how far his chain had fallen behind Amazon. The purchase was not about owning and operating Jet.com as Walmart shut the company down about three years later.

Instead, you could argue that Walmart (WMT) paid all that money in order to hire serial entrepreneur Marc Lore. The genius behind Diapers.com, which Amazon purchased from him, Lore understood the digital future in a way that Walmart executives simply did not.

McMillon acknowledged that the acquisition would be leveraged to speed up Walmart's digital evolution.

“We’re looking for ways to lower prices, broaden our assortment and offer the simplest, easiest shopping experience because that’s what our customers want,” he said. “We believe the acquisition of Jet accelerates our progress across these priorities. Complete article

WAL OVER Walmart ‘closes all self checkout’ at location and staff blame ‘too much theft’ after picture show empty aisles 01/24/2024

A WALMART customer has claimed that his local store has closed all self-checkouts unless absolutely necessary due to theft levels.

The post was accompanied by two pictures of entirely empty self-checkouts with up to 17 registers shut down, signified by the red lights above them.

Rutberg claimed that a joke he made to the cashier made them reveal the reason behind the closure. .....

A recent study by Grabango has revealed that loss rates at self-checkouts are 16 times higher than at cashier registers. Complete article

Complaint filed: Eureka Walmart accused of union busting 01/25/2024

The Eureka Walmart behind the Bayshore Mall was accused by an employee of union busting last July, sparking scrutiny from the National Labor Relations Board, which filed a complaint on Wednesday against the company.

The complaint accused management of threatening workers over placing union flyers in the breakroom, tearing up the flyers in front of the employees, demanding information about possible unionization efforts and formally barring distribution of union literature. Discussing forming a union and promoting those efforts via written material or conversation are legally protected workplace activities.

“The complaint alleges that Walmart interrogated its employees about their union activities in the breakroom, threatened its employees if they continued to place pro-union flyers in the employee breakroom, maintained a Solicitation and Distribution of Literature Policy, and selectively and disparately removed the pro-union flyers from the breakroom table and tore them up in the presence of employees,” Kayla Baldo, director and press secretary for the NLRB, said via email. “The Regional Director is seeking all appropriate remedies.”

The NLRB and Walmart — the nation’s largest private employer — will discuss a possible settlement, but they scheduled a hearing on May 14 before an administrative law judge, where the parties will present their case. Complete article

Prisoners in the US are part of a hidden workforce linked to hundreds of popular food brands 01/29/2024

ANGOLA, La. (AP) — A hidden path to America’s dinner tables begins here, at an unlikely source – a former Southern slave plantation that is now the country’s largest maximum-security prison.

Unmarked trucks packed with prison-raised cattle roll out of the Louisiana State Penitentiary, where men are sentenced to hard labor and forced to work, for pennies an hour or sometimes nothing at all. After rumbling down a country road to an auction house, the cows are bought by a local rancher and then followed by The Associated Press another 600 miles to a Texas slaughterhouse that feeds into the supply chains of giants like McDonald’s, Walmart and Cargill.

Intricate, invisible webs, just like this one, link some of the world’s largest food companies and most popular brands to jobs performed by U.S. prisoners nationwide, according to a sweeping two-year AP investigation into prison labor that tied hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of agricultural products to goods sold on the open market.

They are among America’s most vulnerable laborers. If they refuse to work, some can jeopardize their chances of parole or face punishment like being sent to solitary confinement. They also are often excluded from protections guaranteed to almost all other full-time workers, even when they are seriously injured or killed on the job.

The goods these prisoners produce wind up in the supply chains of a dizzying array of products found in most American kitchens, from Frosted Flakes cereal and Ball Park hot dogs to Gold Medal flour, Coca-Cola and Riceland rice. They are on the shelves of virtually every supermarket in the country, including Kroger, Target, Aldi and Whole Foods. And some goods are exported, including to countries that have had products blocked from entering the U.S. for using forced or prison labor.

Many of the companies buying directly from prisons are violating their own policies against the use of such labor. But it’s completely legal, dating back largely to the need for labor to help rebuild the South’s shattered economy after the Civil War. Enshrined in the Constitution by the 13th Amendment, slavery and involuntary servitude are banned – except as punishment for a crime. Complete article

‘OMG hell no’: Walmart worker calls out ‘crazy’ customer starting ‘random drama’ at 10:59pm 01/28/2024

A Walmart employee recorded a customer getting into a tiff with a co-worker a minute before closing, sparking a series of head nods and knowing comments from TikTok users who seemed all too familiar with the sight.

Hannah Gregory (@hannahhgregoryy) is a Walmart employee who documents what it’s like being a worker for the chain on TikTok, and her latest video showed viewers that there are patrons who have zero issue with keeping a worker in-store past closing time so that they can air out their grievances.

“When crazy a** Walmart customers start random drama at 10:59…” reads a text overlay in the video she posted. Gregory zooms into the store to show a woman hold up her phone. The woman appears to be yelling at a Walmart employee. The caption Gregory penned for the video reads, “My poor boss handled it so well too this lady was going INSANE.”

TikTokers who saw the video had varying opinions on the customer’s freakout. There was one viewer who seemed to view these altercations with a sense of enthusiasm. “Walmart 24 hrs stores would be great just for those moments,” they wrote.

While others shared their own experiences dealing with irate patrons. One person wrote, “Had a customer start drama about his pickup order, He was drunk and was yelling at my coworkers and literally all of AP and like 3 team leads come.” Complete article

Kalamazoo Mich. County Commissioner accused of shoplifting from Walmart 01/29/2024

Tami Rey, 39, was caught on surveillance video "skip-scanning" items at a Walmart self-checkout.

PORTAGE, Mich. — A Kalamazoo County Commissioner is due in court Tuesday on charges of retail fraud.

Tami Rey, 39, is accused of "skip-scanning" items at a Walmart self-checkout in Portage on Friday, Dec. 22. Rey, and another woman identified as Victoria Johnson, were caught on surveillance video putting items into their cart without scanning them, according to a police report.

Rey denies any wrongdoing, saying that it was simply an accident when scanning the items they were purchasing. She wrote in a Facebook post that the items being purchased were for needy families and a food pantry. She went on to explain the situation by saying in part:

"We identified a couple of families and secured a last-minute small grant to purchase gifts. One family needed a bed for a youth member, and I found a nice futon available for in-store pickup at the Walmart on Shaver Road in Portage.

With hesitation, another individual and I went to purchase the futon and other items on the family’s list. Unfortunately, there were no open lanes at the checkout, so we had to use the self-checkout. It was challenging to scan all the items and keep them separate for accounting purposes. We had a total of three different transactions at one self-checkout, as I was also picking up a few food items for a shelter, which needed separate payment."

Rey is accused of not scanning and stealing a heated blanket valued at $76, while Johnson is accused of not scanning and stealing a makeup box valued at $29.97. Complete article

Hidden prison labor in US, including Arkansas, linked to foods from Target, Walmart 01/30/2024

Complete article

Walmart Sets 3-for-1 Stock Split; Shares Rise 01/30/2024

(Bloomberg) -- Walmart Inc. announced a 3-for-1 stock split, saying a lower price will help more of its employees buy shares.

“Sam Walton believed it was important to keep our share price in a range where purchasing whole shares, rather than fractions, was accessible to all of our associates,” Walmart Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said in a statement Tuesday.

The world’s largest retailer has an existing stock-purchase program for employees, through which they buy stock directly and the company matches 15% of the purchase, up to $1,800 a year.

The company said Monday that it will offer annual stock grants as a new incentive for store managers. Starting in April, US store managers will receive as much as $20,000 in company stock, bringing potential pay for the most successful ones to more than $400,000.

Walmart recently said that the average store manager’s salary will increase to $128,000 from $117,000 and that it is redesigning its bonus program so that store profits play a bigger role in deciding awards. Complete article

LOCK & KEY ‘Please don’t steal,’ Walmart shopper begs after being forced to put purchases into locked box just to bring to checkout 01/31/2024

A WALMART shopper has pleaded to others to stop stealing after a run-in with extreme anti-theft measures.

The makeup section at her Walmart store was completely locked-up and any item she chose had to be placed in a locked box until she went to checkout.

TikToker Kelly Andel (@kellyandelexprealty) explained how the anti-theft measure went down and called for people to stop stealing.

Andel captioned the video, "Please don't steal. Let's not take things that don't belong to us."

EXPENSIVE LESSON ‘I learned my lesson,’ says Walmart customer warning others to check receipt as she’s overcharged again after $150 error 01/31/2024

Shoppers have been told how sales tax has been wrongly added to their receipts. TikToker Dorthy Sutton is known for warning others about checking the pieces of paper after she was charged $150 for bananas. In a video shared in November last year, she claimed she was charged for three boxes of eggs instead of two.

The moment happened even though Dorthy claimed she was very diligent in-store.

She urged shoppers to check their receipts before they leave even if they’re in a hurry.

“I have already learned one lesson that I was overcharged,” she admitted. Complete article

‘I push 1 star everytime’: Walmart shopper slams survey after bagging his own groceries at self-checkout 01/31/2024

'You really want my opinion on having to scan and bag my own stuff?'

There has been a bevy of Walmart customers who’ve hopped onto social media to share their disdain for the retailer’s star-rating system at its self-checkout kiosks.

Another TikToker named Kevin (@jesusunfollower) details a further reason why the survey request is frustrating: for a customer to get a printed receipt, which is more than likely going to be requested by an associate waiting at the store’s exit, they must interact with a message prompting shoppers to give an evaluation of their experience at the chain.

“Here’s something that nobody wants,” Kevin says about the survey. “Of course, everybody wants their receipt printed but nobody wants to rate their experience at Walmart. I’m good, thank you,” he says, showing how the self-checkout machine keeps customers hostage at the kiosk for a few extra seconds by populating the touch screen with a dialog box asking customers to rate their recent time shopping at the retailer. Walmart opening 150 new stores 01/31/2024

Walmart will open over 150 stores in the U.S. over the next five years while remodeling 650 existing ones across 47 states and Puerto Rico — "creating tens of thousands of jobs," the retailer announced Wednesday.

The big picture: The first two stores will open in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia, this spring and the remodeling projects will occur over the next 12 months, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner wrote in a blog post Wednesday.

"We're also finalizing construction plans on 12 new projects we intend to start this year, along with converting one of our smaller locations to a Walmart Supercenter."

Walmart, the world's largest company by revenue, last opened a new store in November 2021.

Of note: The remodeled stores "will reflect Walmart's Store of the Future concept, featuring improved layouts, expanded product selections and innovative technology to help our associates better support our customers and make shopping more convenient and enjoyable," Furner said. Complete article
