Walmart Crime Report August 2022

Walmart had twenty one more shootings on or near their property in August of 2022, which is the most ever in a single month; however, three of these shootings began nearby and in two of the cases the shooter went to Walmart, with at least one of them still armed, and the other case the victim went to Walmart after being injured, which resulted in police responses and possible panic among the customers. There was one other incident where two other shootings happened elsewhere in the city, and the shooter got away but was later apprehended at Walmart. Four of the shootings were fatal, and there were at least a dozen additional injuries from the shootings and two injuries from a crash or a pedestrian hit by a car related to these shootings. At least two of the shootings, including one of the fatal ones were arguments between Walmart employees or contractors, one of the fatal shootings was a suicide, and one of the shootouts was with police, although not one of the fatal shootings. One of the shootings where a passenger leaving the car being taken by the shooter was hit also involved taking a young child who he may not have known was in the back, resulting in an Amber alert, but the child was safely returned to relatives before the suspect was caught.

There was also a police officer indicted for manslaughter as a result of a deadly shooting last November. There were more than half a dozen more gun related crimes including several threats to shoot, one false claim of an active shooter and another chase that didn't involve a shooting, but an armed man was threatening to shoot.

There were also three more people found dead, two by natural causes, and one as a result of an assault that also severely injured another person, and two more pedestrians killed after being hit by vehicles, one that was allegedly intentional homicide, bringing the total deaths to at least nine for the month, with additional major injuries possibly threatening more lives.

In addition to the people shot with firearms one woman was shot through the leg with an arrow when someone practicing archery in a near-by field missed the target which was just in front of the Walmart parking lot and hit her; at first no one could figure out where the arrow came from and there was a panic until the realized it was a reckless and foolish accident. They also have numerous robberies every month including eight people robbing one Walmart and threatening workers with a stun gun, and many other violent incidents, some of which they warn workers by announcing a "Code Brown" over the intercom, which most customers don't know about, and they may occasionally change these codes so most people can't keep up with them.

There were at least two more trucks caught smuggling migrants at Walmart, and a much larger one just south of the border in Mexico with 150 migrants in a tractor trailer, which apparently has been semi-routine for years if not decades. When they catch these smugglers the blame is routinely put on a trucker or other smuggler, without even asking who benefits from this routine smuggling operation. If they did as, there would be little doubt that it's often large corporations, although they often operate through middlemen, like farmers or other lower profile subcontractors. For a while Walmart was using a subcontractor that used migrant labor, which they consider illegal, as janitors, before getting caught. The government and corporations routinely pass laws to ensure that the poor are the ones taking the blame, while the rich profit from smuggling or other corrupt activities.

There's also constant talk about epidemic levels of theft from Walmart self-checkouts and an enormous number of false accusations, for either mistakes of the customer or workers jumping to conclusions. Walmart workers semi-routinely warn people of their tactics, either to expose how unethical they are, or to intimidate potential shoplifters in a manner that my be secretly authorized by Walmart. This is also a big windfall for lawyers who know that Walmart is going too far, and offer to help, but they want their cut, and there's no effort to reverse the increase of use of self-checkouts which are causing enormous problems for everyone, all so Walmart can have an increase in profits, even though it leads to more theft and occasionally violence which endangers customers, workers, and police, but not those making these outrageous decisions. There was another lawsuit finding Walmart liable demanding a payment of $4.4 million to a black shopper falsely accused in Washington State, a few months after another finding for over $2 million in Alabama at the beginning of the year, which Walmart said they would appeal. There's little doubt they'll also appeal this, since they appeal almost everything; the only notable exceptions might be very minor losses which would cost more to appeal than to pay, or lawsuits from celebrities like Tracy Morgan, who, of course, also happened to be rich. This happened years ago but they settled it less than a year after he was hit by their truck which is virtually unheard of; but there's little doubt why. As a celebrity he would get an enormous amount of media attention, so Walmart presumably concluded it would be better for profits to settle it, for an undisclosed amount, but Tracy Morgan quickly claimed he was happy and praised Walmart for the way they handled it. Then Walmart tried to sue the insurance company to pay their share, which they thought was too high. This is a clear demonstration that our court system is based on political connections overwhelmingly favoring the wealthy, and has little or nothing to do with what they call "justice!"

There was another example of what the media refers to as a "Good Samaritan" who chased a purse snatcher, raising doubts about whether this label is being used properly, or if it's used to justify vigilantism, which is increasingly common. The original parable from the Bible doesn't have anything to do with helping fight off a robber but helping the victim after the fact with medical treatment to help him recover, and shows that poorer people, often of a race or creed that doesn't get along with the victim, is the better person. In some cases, perhaps including this one, the person stopping the purse snatching is helping the victim, but at the risk of violence, but many other examples where the media has referred to people as Good Samaritans have been much riskier, and often involved attacking petty shoplifters, or activities that could unnecessarily lead to escalating violence. In this case, excessive violence didn't happen, but there's an enormous amount of research showing how to stop the long term causes of violence that should be much less controversial than possible vigilantism at the last minute, but the media that misuses that phrase virtually never covers that research as I pointed out in many other articles. When they claim someone is a "Good Samaritan" because they stop a petty shoplifter stealing from Walmart, which has happened, it's almost a total reversal of the original parable, since Walmart routinely ignores many of the leading causes of crime at their store putting both their customers and employees at risk, so portraying them as a victim is absurd.

In addition to the two accidents, or intentional murders with automobiles, there were over a dozen crashes, stolen vehicles, chases, hit and runs or other crimes involving automobiles, including a dog that was in a stolen vehicle, a pedestrian hit, stolen cars atributed to an online challenge about one model that is supposedly easy to steal, a shoplifting leading to a chase through several counties, and a driver that bypassed the barriers and drove right into the store, which continues to happen on a regular basis at Walmart, although it might not be quite as common as it used to be, possibly because they added more barriers after it happened so often.

Walmart also had at least four more fires, including two arson, one that may have been close to the biggest fires they've had, with the exception of a fire at an Indiana Warehouse which lasted two full days and created enormous environmental damage. In this case the arsonist arrested was only fourteen years old, but this is another indication that a suspect from previous arsons who claimed that it wasn't going to stop was right, although most if not all of his co-conspirators have been caught. The reason he was right about these arsons continuing isn't because his co-conspirators are going to continue setting fires, but because it's become a pattern of behavior with many isolated arsons, often people angry at Walmart happening over and over again, and neither Walmart of the police are paying attention to the long term causes of this arson or any other crimes, even though research shows how to greatly reduce it.

There were also at least eight knife attacks including at least three stabbings, a threat to kill people, and about half of them were attacks or threats to employees as a result of shopliftings. There were several brawls, robberies or attempted robberies, or assaults as well, including one theft of $11K worth of jewelry, which is only considered valuable because of deceptive ads, even though it doesn't serve a practical purpose but does contribute an enormous amount to crime.

Media coverage of Walmart has almost certainly become less complete or reliable over the years; however, social media often picks up the slack, even if some little known people often have their own credibility problems. Fortunately social media often has it's own peer review process which may not be perfect all the time, but is now often more reliable than traditional media. One social media source reported about charging more at the register than advertised or marked, another reported that Walmart workers filling online orders don't have time to deal with customers because if they do they won't keep up and could get fired, others explain why Walmart is cutting so many corners that there's no one there to help customers, others report about threats of being fired if they go home after being sexually assaulted by a flasher, and that workers are being pressured to sign up for Walmart+, which is similar to outragious company store policies previously used to keep their workers in debt, and contrary to the so-called free-market where people can choose where they shop, or other complaints with management. In many of these cases they can be confirmed independently, including the higher prices at the register, which I've seen personally even though I rarely go to Walmart unless there's no other good option. Some labor disputes may seem unreasonable, and perhaps they are, but it's also possible that we don't have the full story, for example, a worker asking people not to bother them when they fill out online orders may seem inhospitable and some customers complained online, but once you understand they're risking losing their jobs it's more understandable, and the real fault is with the management.

Walmart also had more recalls of course, but fewer than usual, including frozen beef products, which may already have been recalled several times this year, or something similar, and chopped almonds, both that might be improperly marked or aggravate allergies. Walmart lawsuits also continue non-stop, including over property taxes, where they sue across the country, which no small business could ever do, a mother that lost her daughter years ago when she was killed in an RV fire, which is virtually guaranteed to fail, but it may result in poor people no longer being allowed to stay overnight for free, another big loss in an opioid lawsuit costing them $650 million if it stands up to appeals, a judge refused to dismiss a case about payments during meal breaks, but of course, Walmart relentlessly appeals many of these cases, giving them an unjustifiable advantage only available to wealthy oligarchs, a lawsuit which they claim is absurd because they're not responsible for scam artists using their money transfer services, but it's one of many cases where Walmart refuses to make financial services safe, and customers who mistakenly trust Walmart pay the price, and many more lawsuits.

Walmart also officially admitted that they're hiring social media influencers, which many of us have known for year, since advertising for Walmart or other corporations is hardly something that most people would do, yet there are many people brazenly doing so, and in some cases they have advanced graphics most computer users aren't familiar with. They hardly hide it, except to the most credulous people that don't even think about deceptive marketing tactics. They're also clamping down, in some stores, on the size of bags, purses or backpacks shoppers can wear, which is angering many people.

Walmart was also caught selling fraudulent products from a third party, and passing out counterfeit bills they collected from someone they admitted was a known counterfeiter, even though it was a hundred dollar bill which is routinely checked by most retailers. Walmart is also rapidly increasing use of automation with automatic cars, drones, or deliveries that can go right into your garage, but they're still experimental and it's a matter of time before we know more about how many crashes or deaths happen as a result of them, there have already been a few.

How often do you see scary clowns sneaking up behind you at Walmart? Ever think he might be a killer clown? Trey Gerald has been dressing up as "Buzzsaw the Clown," which looks like he could be a killer clown from a horror film, but he says he's not a threat and he loves everyone, often getting it on video.

It's not as bad as shooting people through the leg with an arrow, killing people with firearms or by running them over, among other things happening at Walmart.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in August 2022. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

What To Do If You Ever Hear A 'Code Brown' At Walmart 08/03/2022

When you go to your local Walmart, chances are that the most exciting thing to happen would be seeing a particularly oddball customer dressed in an outfit wildly inappropriate for grocery shopping — and even then, that's a pretty rare occurrence. Most of your trips to Walmart are usually the same old song and dance, selecting your items while enjoying the music playing over the intercom, only interrupted by employees making the same cut-and-dry announcements. Nothing really noteworthy — most of the time.

But what would happen if the din of pop music and employee chatter suddenly stopped? Instead of hearing the sounds of today's hits, you'd instead hear the dry, stern voice of an unseen employee announcing that there's a "code brown" happening in the store. What does that mean? Are you in danger? Was there some kind of accident?

Codes with a color in them, however, pose a more serious concern. If you were to hear a code brown, it would mean that your life may be at risk.

A code brown refers to an act of violence in the store Complete article

Leaked memo and store employees reveal Walmart's aggressive approach to enroll its workers in Walmart+, the company's faltering Amazon Prime rival 08/01/2022

As Walmart+ membership has been on the decline this year, Walmart has taken an aggressive approach to signing up associates for free memberships, according to an internal memo viewed by Insider and store employees' accounts.

About 18 months after the service's launch, Walmart began offering free memberships to all associates on March 15, according to a document sent to store managers, which was viewed by Insider. An internal slide introducing the membership said, "This benefit doesn't cost you a thing, and you can use it throughout your entire Walmart career."

In the memo to managers, the company emphasized that membership was "completely voluntary" for associates. But that hasn't stopped managers from turning up the pressure on sign-ups, according to five store-level employees who spoke with Insider. These employees asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. Insider knows each of their identities.

"We have repeatedly been asked if we have Walmart+," an employee who works at a Walmart store in Missouri said. "It has become full-on harassment at this point, where multiple managers on multiple different occasions, sometimes even in the same day, have asked us if we have signed up for Walmart+." ‘There’s 2 things you don’t do’: Walmart worker issues PSA to customers who see employees fulfilling online orders for other customers, sparking debate 08/01/2022

'What you guys fail to realize is that we have to pick at a certain percentage or we will get fired.'

One Walmart worker on TikTok has a public service announcement to customers who spot employees in the store attempting to fulfill customer orders.

In her video, which now has over 865,000 views, @cottoncandy1016 tells viewers “When you shopping at Walmart, and you see an employee with these right here, it’s two things you don’t do.” She is standing in front of baskets used by workers who are fulfilling online orders for customers.

“Don’t stop them while they picking, and don’t jump in front of them,” she continues.

Some commenters critiqued what they perceived to be a lack of customer service.

“I guess Walmart employees no longer have any customer service we are just in the way of their warehouse I’m so tired of Walmart employees,” one commenter wrote.

“Please! Girl I’m a customer…you are working!” another commenter wrote. “If I have a question I will ask….(Walmart) needs to check your attitude.” Complete article

Gun went off during fight between workers at Walmart in Baker La. 08/04/2022

BAKER - A worker at a Walmart in East Baton Rouge allegedly pulled a gun on a co-worker during an argument at the store early Thursday morning.

The Baker Police Department said the fight involved two temp agency employees who were working at the store: 31-year-old Raymond Blanchard and 46-year-old Paul Harrell.

Police said the argument at the Plank Road store began around midnight after Harrell confronted Blanchard over $250 that went missing from his backpack. Based on witness accounts and surveillance footage taken from the store, Blanchard began cursing at Harrell and following him as he tried to walk away.

Police said Blanchard then went to the store's break room, grabbed a handgun and a knife, and confronted Harrell again in the storage area. At that point, the report said Blanchard shouted "I'm from New Orleans, I'll put this thing on you" before pistol-whipping Harrell in the head.

The arrest report went on to say Harrell, "now in fear for his own safety," began to struggle with Blanchard, and a single shot was fired into a concrete barrier during the scuffle. Complete article

‘They’re ripping you off’: TikToker claims Walmart is charging more for items at checkout than listed price 08/07/2022

'They're purposefully marking up prices because most people are not gonna check that when they're checking out.'

A TikToker went viral after she shared an experience at Walmart, where she was charged more for items at checkout than their listed price.

“You guys, Walmart is scamming people, so, listen up,” the TikToker Brenna (@brennasbakery) starts. She says she went to Walmart to buy Wilton chocolate for a cake. Both online and in the aisle, the listed price was $2.62, she says. However, when she went to the cash register, the chocolate was ringing up at $4 per package.

Brenna brought this to the cashier’s attention, and they adjusted the price of the chocolate—but this wasn’t the only item to ring up at a higher cost than its online and aisle listings. An additional five items rang up at increased prices, she says. Complete article

Mother whose daughter died in Fridley Walmart lot blaze from neighboring RV in August 2019 sues-retailer 08/09/2022

Essie McKenzie walked out of a Fridley Walmart one morning three years ago to find her car ablaze with her two young daughters still inside.

The fire had spread from a cook stove in a recreational camper nearby. It killed her youngest child, Ty'rah White, 6, and badly disfigured her then 9-year-old surviving daughter, Taraji White — leaving the family reeling to this day.

McKenzie is now suing Walmart related to its policy that welcomes RV campers to stay overnight in the mega retail chain's store parking lots, alleging negligence and wrongful death due to a lack of proper oversight.

"For me, it's more about accountability," said McKenzie, of Coon Rapids. "I feel like I took full accountability because my child is not even here. I have a child that I can't see every day. I took full accountability for that, but besides that, I feel like everybody else needs to step up and take accountability for their part."

McKenzie filed a federal civil lawsuit against the Arkansas-based Walmart last month, with her minor daughters also listed as plaintiffs.

The five-count complaint, seeking more than $75,000 in damages, outlines allegations including negligence, nuisance and wrongful death. At the heart of the suit is Walmart's invitation for campers to stay overnight in its parking lots. McKenzie alleges that Walmart endangers shoppers and nearby residents by not actively monitoring its overnight guests, saying it created an "unregulated campground." Complete article

Walmart revoked disabled SC worker’s electric cart, sent him home without pay, feds say 08/10/2022

Federal officials have filed a lawsuit accusing Walmart of discriminating against one of its employees at a store in Aiken, South Carolina.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, Aug. 8, by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, says Walmart permitted a part-time sales associate with a disability to use one of the store’s motorized carts at work after his hiring, according to a news release from the EEOC.

But about seven months later, feds say, a different manager told the man he could no longer use it because the carts are only for customers’ use.

Feds said this occurred after the worker had already completed a probationary employment period while using the cart. Meanwhile, the EEOC said employees with temporary injuries were allowed to use them.

Walmart told the employee to get his own cart or transfer to another position at the self-checkout registers, feds said. Unable to obtain his own cart to perform the duties of his position, which included stocking shelves, and unable to perform the “duties of the self-checkout host due to his disability,” the man was sent home indefinitely and without pay, feds say. A Major Bombshell About Walmart Coffee Was Just Filed In Court 08/10/2022

Walmart and other leading grocery stores such as Costco, Kroger, and Safeway are facing a lawsuit for misleading marketing. Yikes!

On July 29, Top Class Actions reported that supermarket chain Kroger and coffee brand Hawaiian Isles Kona Coffee (HIKC) Co. “agreed to pay a combined $14.3 million to resolve claims they violated trademark law by marketing coffee as originating in the Kona region.” Filed by the Kona coffee farmers, the lawsuit claims that retailers such as Walmart, Kroger, HIKC, Costco, Amazon, World Market, and more attempted to sell their own coffee beans as Kona beans, when in fact, they’re just “ordinary commodity coffee.” Since these grocery stores tried to market their own beans as coffee beans originating from the Kona region in Hawaii, this gave them a chance to potentially charge shoppers with a higher price for the product.

The lawsuit claims that Kona coffee farmers were greatly affected by this practice of selling counterfeit beans. Not only does it damage the reputation of the region, but it also forces the farmers to sell their beans at a lower price in order to compensate for the excessive supply. Complete article

Here's what happened at the Camden SC Walmart that led to a police response, unrelated chase 08/11/2022

Police say a loud argument between people in the store, one of them allegedly armed, led to a police response - and then an escape attempt by a shoplifting suspect.

CAMDEN, S.C. — Investigators are working to uncover additional details about two separate incidents that both boiled over at the Camden Walmart on Thursday afternoon.

According to Camden Police Chief Joe Floyd, officers were initially called out to the store after employees overheard a group of about four people - three males and one female - arguing. The employees heard someone in the group threaten to shoot another and an employee alleged that one of the males had a gun.

Employees passed the information to managers and 911 was soon called. Chief Floyd said no shots were fired.

However, during the police response to Walmart, a male suspect, in what was later found to be an unrelated incident, did escape as a passenger along with a female driver. That incident soon became what Chief Floyd described as a high-speed chase that led to the involvement of the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office.

The chase ran down Springdale Road at speeds of up to 90 mph according to the sheriff's office. It soon ended in a crash involving a pursuing Kershaw County deputy after the suspects turned right on Liberty Hill Road. Complete article

Walmart, CVS, Walgreens ordered to pay $650 million over opioid sales in Ohio 08/17/2022

(Bloomberg) — Walmart Inc., CVS Health Corp. and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. were ordered to pay $650 million over their failure to properly monitor opioid prescriptions in two Ohio counties.

A federal judge in Cleveland ruled Wednesday that the companies had to pay “abatement” fees to help local officials deal with the fallout from the public health crisis created by improper sales of millions of opioid-based painkillers.

The ruling comes after a jury found in November that the three helped create that crisis — the drug industry’s latest loss in the expanding litigation over the painkillers. Complete article

‘Was my AirPod pissing you off from 15 feet away?’: Walmart worker calls out bakery manager who told her to remove her AirPods 08/20/2022

In a viral TikTok video, a Walmart employee calls out a manager in a different department who told her to remove her AirPods. The clip sparked discussion about the authority of management from different departments within the large stores.

The video features the creator Sanaa (@justt.sanaa) as she sits in her car, wearing her Walmart vest.

“So, I work as a personal shopper,” Sanaa begins, describing her role and department at the store. “To start my day, I go into work with my AirPods cause it’s slow on Sundays. This lady from the bakery comes back and she’s like, ‘Oh, sorry, you have to take that out of your ear.’”

Sanaa says the woman was shouting at her, despite her wearing only one AirPod.

After her co-worker had stopped yelling, Sanaa says she asked for her name and department. The woman was the manager of the bakery. The TikToker claims that her authority was irrelevant to her since she works in an entirely different department. Sanaa finishes off the video by ranting about how the lady was bothered by someone fifteen feet away wearing AirPods. Complete article

The Disturbing Checkout Scam Walmart Is Being Accused Of 08/20/2022

Does Walmart really change prices to charge customers more?

In July, a TikTok video was uploaded by "brennasbakery," warning Walmart shoppers of what seems to be a scheme to steal money from the customer. Brenna explains that she went to Walmart to purchase baking ingredients. One ingredient was baking chocolate which had the price tag of $2.62 both on Walmart's online website and in the store. When the chocolates were being rung up for checkout, Brenna noticed that they were being priced at $4.00. Although Brenna corrected the cashier who then corrected the price, she noticed that five other items were also being rung up as more expensive than they were listed as. This could mean that Walmart was secretly marking up prices of certain goods.

Many commenters claimed to have seen this happen to them as well, but others seemed less eager to jump into accusations. One commenter noted that someone at the store probably forgot to do markdowns on items, while another reported that Walmart employees may forget to change the prices on certain items in store. One Walmart worker asked, "make sure you let people know not to get mad the the actual workers there in the store please, we have no control on price."  Complete article

Former Walmart Employee Reveals How They Trick People Into Not Stealing From Self-Checkout 08/20/2022

Shoplifting is a big no-no, so don’t even think about it…but you probably already knew that, didn’t you? Nevertheless, today we’re going to dig into some tricks of the trade, so to speak. ....

A former Walmart employee named Athenia Camacho posted a video on TikTok where she broke down how workers there try to cut down on shoplifting.

Camacho says that one way workers at Walmart combat theft is that the employees who watch over the self-checkout stations have a handy device at their disposal. These devices allow Walmart employees to temporarily pause purchases that customers are in the process of making so an employee has to come over to help because items won’t scan.

So basically the workers act like there is something wrong with the self-checkout machine and then they force the customer to go to a register where an actual human being is working so they have to empty their bags and start all over…and you know nothing is getting by the people actually ringing your items up. I’m a lawyer – Walmart aggressively pursues thefts even if you make an honest mistake, but there are 3 ways to reply 08/23/2022

A LAWYER has warned Walmart will aggressively prosecute shoppers that try to steal items as the retail giant clamps down on theft.

Dozens of customers have shared horror experiences where they’ve been wrongly accused of shoplifting after making an unintentional mistake when using the self-checkout.

Legal experts at the MacDonald Law Office have claimed Walmart theft prosecutions have “dramatically increased” following the introduction of self-checkout machines.

Lawyers have said that shoppers have a strong defense if they make an accidental mistake. .....

Criminal law attorney Carl Barkemeyer said if shoppers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana were caught stealing they may have received a $400-500 fine before entering a rehabilitation program.

But, if a shopper is caught shoplifting now, they may approach a patron and try to restrain them.

According to Barkemeyer, legally, security guards are not allowed to handcuff, detain or put their hands on a shoplifter.

The legal expert says security guards are only allowed to keep you from leaving the premises until the cops arrive. Complete article

Bexar County deputies arrest eight in incident at Converse Tx. Walmart 08/27/2022

UPDATE: The Bexar County Sheriff's Office have made eight arrests in what started as an "attempt to locate" call that led to a suspect fleeing into a Converse Walmart. Deputies initially responded to that call at a home in the 7400 block of Estrid Trail, said Sheriff Javier Salazar at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Estrid Trail is a street behind the Walmart in Converse. When deputies arrived at the home, they reported hearing gunshots.

Deputies made their way to the backyard and saw a group of juveniles that then scattered and fled. One juvenile suspect hopped the fence and fled into the Walmart, but he was not armed. Officers were able to detain the juvenile suspect in the Walmart.

Salazar said deputies originally treated the incident as an active shooter situation, but that was dropped since the juvenile suspect was not armed. Employees and customers were still told to evacuate the Walmart while they worked the scene. Operations have returned to normal at the Walmart, but Salazar says there will be a heavy police presence in the area throughout Saturday. Complete article

Local shoppers upset with NM Walmart bag policy 08/27/2022

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Retail theft is a growing problem in New Mexico, so local businesses are taking matters into their own hands by increasing security measures.

A local Walmart in New Mexico has implemented a bag policy that informs customers bags, backpacks, suitcases and containers whose dimensions exceed 12” x 12” x 8” are no longer permitted inside the store.

However, a New Mexico resident said the treatment she received from Walmart on Wednesday was unjust.

“It angered me being treated like that,” said Jonie Fischer. “It made me feel like I was being accused of stealing and I have my own money and have my own house.”

Fischer said she stopped by to purchase clothing for cold weather when things went downhill within minutes of arrival.

“I got to the door, and I was met by an employee greeter and they’re standing there with this ruler that was square, and they’re measuring this way and that way, and they measured my purse and says, ‘you can’t come in here, your purse is too big,'” she said. Complete article

Walmart Sells Fake 30TB Hard Drive That’s Actually Two Small SD Cards in a Trench Coat 08/30/2022

Until Monday, Walmart shoppers could grab an incredible deal: a massive solid state hard drive (SSD) for the incredible price of $17.99. Often, similar drives go for much more, depending on their size. Generally, a TB of storage on an SSD can cost between $50 to $100.

Ray, a cybersecurity researcher, who saw a similar item on online retailer AliExpress, knew the offer was too good to be true. He bought the drive, suspecting it was a scam, and took it apart to find out what exactly was happening here. Sure enough, he found what amounted to a different item cosplaying as a big SSD. Inside were two small memory cards and the item had been programmed in such a way so as to appear it had 30TB of storage when plugged into a computer.

“I knew going in it would be a scam but I thought we might use it as an educational opportunity,” the cybersecurity researcher who goes by the name Ray, who tweeted his findings last week, told Motherboard in an online chat. “My son and I worked on it together.” ....

Ray’s finding highlights something that many consumers may be unaware of: that Walmart, much like Amazon, runs an online marketplace that sells many, many products from third party sellers and not just those found on Walmart’s physical shelves, opening itself up to reputation, quality, and content moderation issues. Walmart seeks to dismiss lawsuit by FTC over money transfers 08/29/2022

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart filed a motion on Monday to dismiss a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that accuses the nation’s largest retailer of allowing its money-transfer services to be used by scam artists.

The motion calls the FTC’s June lawsuit an “egregious instance of agency overreach.”

The FTC alleges in its lawsuit that for years, Walmart failed to properly secure the money-transfer services offered at its stores, stealing “hundreds of millions of dollars” from customers. The agency said Walmart didn’t properly train its employees, failed to alert customers, and used procedures that allowed fraudsters to cash out at its stores. The FTC had asked the court to order Walmart to return money to consumers and to impose civil penalties on the company. Complete article
