Walmart Crime Report June 2022

Walmart had at least twelve more shootings related to their business in June of 2022, although one was a suicide that took place off the premises, but this was after a murder, and possible kidnapping that began on the premises, and may also have involved another shooting, although the cause of the murder victims death hasn't been disclosed yet. There were at least seven dead as a result of these shootings, with two murder suicides, and the other three wwere seperate incidents where police fatally shot and killed suspects. There was also a fourth officer involved shooting which wasn't fatal but it did cause injuries to the suspect, and there were at least four additional injuries, not counting the officer involved injury. At least one of these shootings was treated as an active shooter incident causing panic, and there were at least two more alleged active shooter incidents which turned out to be false alarms, but they still caused panics.

In addition to the seven people killed in shootings there were another five bodies found in separate incidents, although one of them was reported last month in the same parking lot where another body was found this month. There was also a child killed in an accident and another child killed in a stabbing, which comes to a total of at least thirteen deaths at Walmart, which is at or near the record with the exception of two mass fatality incidents years ago, one the incident where over ten migrants were found dead in a tractor trailer at least five or six years ago and another over twenty people were killed in the El Paso mass shooting along with other deaths from each of those months. There were also reports of three deaths from defective bed rails sold at Walmart and a lawsuit, which was dismissed, related to huffing and the plaintiff blamed Walmart for selling a product which was used against recommendations, but these happened in previous years so they're not counted.

There were close to if not more than two dozen additional gun related crimes, including numerous robberies, and more than the usual number of threats to shoot up Walmart, along with a vigilante effort to stop an unarmed shoplifter, one incident that lead to a high speed chase, one that was just a pellet gun.a few gun thefts, and an attempt to grab a police officers gun. In some previous cases, when there was vigilante activities, the media or police often referred to them as "good samaritans," which is not what the original story describes; but in this case the police welcomed what they considered good intentions, but warned against using firearms to escalate petty crimes, which is what they used to do all the time. It was only a few years ago when a vigilante shot and killed someone for stealing diapers, even though he wasn't a threat to anyone and it was none of his business. That person was evenually convicted of murder, so even when tehy do refer to vigilantes as "good sumaritans," that won't protect them from potentioal criminal charges, including murder.

There was a man wanted for murder caught at Walmart after an attempted theft, although the murder took place elsewhere. Walmart employees are upset, demanding paid sick leave since a former worker was afraid to take time off and died as a result of it; her body was found in the bathroom after her shift ended, last January. There were few if any news reports about this when it happened, which means the previous count for that month was incomplete and adds to the evidence that even major incidents, crimes or deaths are not reported widely, and that many of these estimates may be a fraction of the incidents at Walmart.

Walmart also had a man that shoplifted a bat and started swinging it at kids, another man that robbed a bank and attempted to rob Walmart with a grenade threat, a few suspects that shot fireworks at a customer, and an online video showing a teen getting jumped. There was also another man that used a sledge hammer to steal merchandise, two people arrested for attacking deputies in a brawl, a woman was assaulted while most witnesses recorded her without helping until her friend fought him off with a broomstick, another employee who was arrested for recording children in the bathroom, and a kidnapping and assault, along with several other robberies.

Walmart, and many other major retailers, have a long history of trying to turn petty theft into felonies, one way or another; the most common way is to claim that when suspects repeatedly shoplift it should be considered a felony. But in one of the most extreme examples I've seen, the Kentucky Attorney General is trying to do their dirty work for them, based on an incredibly flimsy argument. This didn't start with the Attorney General, it began at a local level, where the suspect was convicted of "unlawful access to a computer," which is an example of trying to use self-checkout to underpay for items, in this case about $80, which is petty, and was still convicted and sentenced to 5-10 years for the crime. An appeals judge recognized how absurd this is and threw it out; then the Attorney General indicated he would appeal and try to get the 5-10 year sentence reinstated. Our government routinely spends insane amounts of money when the poor steal small amounts, but instead of spending money to stop white collar crime, like wage theft or deceptive ads, which Walmart and other corporations routinely do, they spend more money suppressing peaceful protests about the corruption they ignore!

Increased reliance on automation, including self-checkout is a major contributing factor, yet they refuse to hire cashiers, even though a large portion of their savings goes to loss prevention and spying on us, and it also contributes to many incidents where violence escalates when they try to catch people stealing at the self-checkout, which often endangers employees or customers that get in the way, including one time last month where an employee was shoved as a suspect tried to escape, which isn't as bad as some previous incidents. Walmart was also sued for lack of security to prevent scam artists using their money services, while they collected large fees, but victims of this fraud were left accountable for the losses, including the fees to Walmart.

In addition to the fatal crash killing a 12-year-old there were close to if not more than a dozen other major crashes, hit and runs, high-speed chases, carjackings, auto thefts, or other automobile crimes or accidents, including a Tractor Trailer that intentionally rammed into the store causing it to shut down and at least one pedestrian that was hit and injured, among other incidents. There was also a truck hauling over 400 tires that caught fire at a NY Walmart.

In addition to the truck that caught fire there were at least eight to ten more fires at Walmart, including at least two arsons, the cause of most of the other fires wasn't initially reported. Two of these fires, including one of the arsons were both in the same area of Washington State, but the second one was accidental, and the police are still searching for suspected arsonists from April in Arizona. In a follow up in the Indiana fire three months ago, which was almost certainly their biggest fire ever and lasted two days before they could put it out, they found asbestos, benzene and other chemicals in the smoke which caused many health problems in the area. As I reported previously there's some doubt about whether or not Walmart will be held liable for the damages, even though no cause has been reported, partly because of a sweetheart deal they negotiated in 2014 when Mike Pence was still governor, that may have helped them avoid taxes and possible liability.

In addition to the fourteen year old that was stabbed to death there were four more knife attacks, two that resulted in stabbings to a customer and employee. They also had an attempted child abduction,a meth dealer arrested after a foot chase through the store, and someone arrested for threats against the store.

In addition to the three people killed as a result of defective bedrails in previous years, more recent defective products included antidepressants that were put in laxative bottles and made at least one person sick, although more bottles were contaminated, and a woman claims that Walmart's acetaminophen led to her kids' disorders. They had their dog food recalled for salmonella contamination, childrens robes recalled for violating flammability standards, and allegedly discontinued coconut milk sales due to use of monkey's forced to gather them, although this was denied, but the denial admitted they do this for local cultures.

Not only is Walmart increasing their ability to spy on people in the stores, but they're also installing tracking devices so they can spy on their truckers too, and automation is expanding in all aspects of their business, some that may not have been thoroughly tested. They're also having numerous lawsuits overturned, showing they're rarely held accountable for anything, which may include new problems if there's an accident or worse, deaths as a result of their automated technology. And shortages from various items are exapanding, this now includes abortion pills, which are now being rationed. This is what tehy constantly warn us will happen under Socialism, but it's happening under Capitalism, while many European contries, with better economic systems, sometimes referred to as Socialist, aren't having these problems.

Has the drive up line at the Walmart pharmacy ever been so long that you and your significant other decided to have a good quickie?

When shopping or working at the Walmart pharmacy on the inside have you ever had an unexpected opportunity to watch porn on the security camera aimed at the drive through?

Only at Walmart?

Have you ever been pulled over by a State Trooper on the highway driving Walmart's motorized cart home?

One Walmart worker claims they literally make one employee cover five departments.

Could this be why one woman is cutting her own fabric, which is normally done by an employee?

Or why did another customer use the PA system to ask for an employee to help him?

You would think they would be apologetic for not making employees available, not angry at him for using the intercom.

If they can't keep track of all their employee shortages, is it surprising that one TikToker claimed that after she was fired she applied again and immediately rehired, and many other workers said the same thing happened to them.

Walmart doesn't know what day it is, who Jesus Christ is or what praying is; how can they be safe from the eternal fate?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in June 2022. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Adult bed rails sold at Walmart, Amazon, eBay linked to multiple deaths, feds say 06/03/2022

Three people have become entrapped by the bed rails and died since 2006

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is calling on consumers to "immediately stop using" certain Mobility Transfer Systems adult portable bed rails have been linked to three elderly deaths.

The independent federal regulatory agency's warning covers 10 models, approximately 285,000 bed rails, which can "create an entrapment hazard and pose a risk of serious injury or death to users," according to the warning notice.

During an evaluation of the bed rails, which were sold at major retailers across the nation, the agency found "that consumers can become entrapped between the bed rail and mattress, or within portions of the bed rail itself, leading to asphyxia." Complete article

After a 38-year-old Arkansas Walmart worker died at the store, employees are fighting for a voice and more paid sick leave 06/01/2022

On January 16, after Janikka Perry ended her shift at an Arkansas Walmart, she was found in the bathroom, unresponsive.

According to a Medium post from her sister, Nicoshe James, Perry — a 38-year-old mother and grandmother — felt ill during her shift, but continued working. James wrote on Medium that her sister was likely "scared to call off and then scared to leave work in the middle of her shift."

"That's what it's like working at Walmart," James wrote.

Now James, a former Walmart associate, and current workers are calling on Walmart to enact a plan that would ensure sick employees receive time off and that associates have a voice in the company. It's the latest instance of workers asking for more— and one that associates say is imperative for the future of workers and the company. James will address the company's shareholder meeting on June 1 in pre-recorded testimony to talk about her sister and the proposal. Advocates will rally on June 2 in Bentonville, Arkansas to remember Perry. Complete article

Walmart shareholder proposal for report on abortion ban impact fails 06/01/2022

BENTONVILLE, Ark., June 1 (Reuters) - Walmart Inc (WMT.N) shareholders on Wednesday struck down by an overwhelming margin an activist investor-led proposal asking the retailer to produce a report assessing the impact on its employees if the U.S. Supreme Court rolls back abortion rights.

The proposal, made by Clean Yield Asset management on behalf of activist investor Julie Kalish, urged Walmart's board to detail "any known and any potential risks and costs to the company caused by enacted or proposed state policies severely restricting reproductive rights" by the end of the year.

Only 12.9% of the votes cast were in favor of the resolution made at the company's annual general meeting. ......

The proposal was one of seven activist-led resolutions voted down on Wednesday that challenged Walmart's policies on various issues including treatment of workers, workplace practices and charitable donations.

The U.S. has wasted over 82 million Covid vaccine doses 06/06/2022

Vaccine providers say declining demand, large minimum orders and multidose vials make it hard to avoid waste while still offering shots to anyone who wants them.

Pharmacies, states, U.S. territories and federal agencies discarded 82.1 million Covid vaccine doses from December 2020 through mid-May — just over 11 percent of the doses the federal government distributed, according to data the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared with NBC News. That’s an increase from the 65 million doses the CDC told the Associated Press had been wasted as of late February.

Two retail pharmacy chains, CVS and Walmart, were responsible for over a quarter of the doses thrown away in the United States in that time period, in part due to the sheer volume of vaccine they handled. Complete article

Greenpeace Drops Walmart ‘Recyclable’ Plastics False-Ad Suit 06/06/2022

Greenpeace has voluntarily dismissed, for now, a lawsuit alleging Walmart Inc. deceptively touts its private-label plastic products as “recyclable,” according to a filing in a federal court in California.

Greenpeace Inc. alleged that the retailer’s plasticware and plastic product packaging aren’t recyclable because consumers don’t have access to recycling programs that accept them, they can’t be properly separated and sorted, and there are no end markets to reuse them or convert them into a material that can be reused.

The environmental group sought an injunction that would either require Walmart to substantiate its recycling claims or prohibit the company from ... Complete article

White supremacists are going to be “shooting up all Walmarts and will kill Blacks and Mexicans” in San Bernardino, California. 06/08/2022 False alarm?

An Instagram post gave a stark warning to stay away from Walmart stores in California’s San Bernardino County, alleging that police there were warned that white supremacists were planning mass shootings.

The post comes soon after two horrific mass shootings, one at an Uvalde, Texas, elementary school, where 21 people, including 19 children, were killed, and another at the Tops Friendly Markets store in Buffalo, New York, where 10 Black people died in what authorities say was a racially motivated attack.

But the threats are not credible, police in San Bernardino said, and there have been a number of similar threats nationwide in the past week.

Woman claims Walmart's acetaminophen sales led to her kids' disorders 06/10/2022

Walmart was sued in federal court in Seattle this week for selling acetaminophen to a Snohomish woman, who claims her regular use of the medication during separate pregnancies in 2009 and 2011 caused lifelong neurological disorders in her children.

The latest: Tiffany Rutledge, the plaintiff, claims her children — identified only by their initials, C.R. and L.R. — both suffer from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a result.

L.R. is also likely autistic because of prenatal exposure to the drug, the lawsuit says.

What they're saying: Rutledge's suit claims that for years while Walmart has manufactured and sold acetaminophen in its stores, "the weight of scientific evidence" has found exposure in the womb to the drug, also known as paracetamol and APAP, "significantly increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders" in children. A fatal hit-and-run killed 3 Girl Scouts and a mother

A group of Girl Scouts and parent chaperones were picking up litter along a road in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, on Nov. 3, 2018. That’s when a pickup truck plowed into them and took off. The impact killed three of the girls and a mother and left another girl with life-altering injuries, Twin Cities Pioneer Press reports. ....

Is 5-10 years fair for shoplifting $80 from a Walmart self-checkout? Kentucky AG says yes 06/13/2022

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — When Chastity Shirley shopped at Walmart’s Somerset, Kentucky, store one day in 2018, she pulled what retailers call a "switcheroo."

She switched the bar codes from a toothbrush holder with those from a more expensive children's rug and slipcover and checked herself out of the store.

She was caught red-handed by a loss-control associate who was watching her.

The cost difference between the item she paid for and the two she tried to take — $80.80.

But instead of charging her with misdemeanor theft — standard for shoplifting crimes of less than $500 — a Pulaski County prosecutor persuaded a grand jury to indict Shirley for "unlawful access to a computer." ....

A jury found Shirley guilty, but the Kentucky Court of Appeals reversed her conviction, saying it would be "inherently unfair to convict somebody of a class C felony for theft of goods worth $80." ....

On Wednesday, however, Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office will ask the Kentucky Supreme Court to reinstate Shirley’s conviction — lining up behind retailers eager to stem a burgeoning form of crime. Complete article

LEWISBURG, WV (WVNS) – Foster parents in West Virginia are struggling as Walmart is no longer accepting Foster Parent vouchers.

Foster parents in West Virginia receive a $300 voucher to make purchases such as clothes, diapers, car seats, or baby formula for their foster kids. But, with Walmart no longer accepting the vouchers, many foster parents just can’t afford to get the things they need there.

As of right now, the only stores in the state to accept those vouchers are JCPenney and Gabe’s. Gabe’s has 6 locations in the state. JCPenney has 8.

This means Jessica Smith, a foster parent from Greenbrier County, has to drive nearly an hour each way to Beckley, just to shop at a store that doesn’t sell diapers, formula, or many other things foster parents need. Complete article

Irvine man with disability claims he was discriminated against by Ky. Walmart when applying for job 06/15/2022

“I talked to some of their cart pushers and they hate their job and I’d love the job because I love being outside,” says Price.

Price says he felt confident he’d get the job, especially because he has janitorial degree in building maintenance and at one point had his own shampoo and carpet business. But instead of a rejection letter, he says he got a call from a manager. Complete article

She writes in a text overlay for the video: "POV: you got fired from Walmart then you applied back and they rehired you."

"They will literally hire anyone," Ameliya wrote in the caption for the now-viral clip.

Apparently, she isn't the only Walmart employee to whom this has happened to. Complete article

Walmart is acquiring Memomi, an AR startup powering virtual try-on for eyewear 06/29/2022

Walmart is expanding its array of virtual try-on services for shoppers with today’s news that it’s planning to acquire Memomi, an AR optical tech company and current Walmart partner offering a virtual try-on experience for eyewear. Deal terms were not disclosed, but Memomi has enabled digital measurements for all Walmart and Sam’s Club customers since 2019, the retailer said.

This partnership had spanned more than 2,800 Walmart Vision Centers and 550 Sam’s Clubs. The technology also powers the optical e-commerce experience on SamsClub.com.

Although Memomi’s website touts how its technology can be used across product categories beyond optical — including beauty, fashion, accessories, footwear and more — Walmart declined to speak to its future plans for the service in these areas. Instead, the retailer told us it was only focused on leveraging Memomi’s capabilities in virtual optical try-on. Complete article
