Walmart Crime Report November 2020

Walmart had at least nine more shootings, including one by a councilwoman in a personal dispute, in November 2020, which is slightly low, especially for the holiday season; although, five years ago, it would have been considered high. Two of those were fatal, one of those was killed by police; and there were three more dead bodies found in separate store, one person killed in an accident and a worker that died from COVID, for a total of at least seven dead. There were also at least ten major gun related crimes, mostly involving robberies. One of them involved guns stolen from the police, and the suspects were later arrested at Walmart.

There seems to be a surprising drop in crime reports at Walmart; however, the amount of ads thinly disguised as news stories has skyrocketed during the holiday season, possibly burying many more news stories about crime at Walmart. Walmart has had several partnerships with Google or news outlets and buys an enormous number of ads, although none of them should justify the enormous number of ads thinly disguised as news which are clearly happening. Yet if there isn't some kind of preferential treatment for Walmart there's no rational explanation for these ads.

There's still plenty of crime at Walmart, most of which isn't reported widely. And employees are often the ones most at risk, with additional risk from the corona-virus, both because they're at risk of getting it, and they have to enforce face-mask requirements and often have to deal with angry customers. Yet they get no protection, hazard pay and are even having their wages suppressed so much that many of them are on food stamps and medicaid.

Walmart didn't dominate the market because they provide better service or prices; they dominated the market because they got enormous tax breaks across the country and used their money to undercut small businesses, then in many cases, as monopolies often do, raised their prices. They're also using massive union busting tactics, also with the help of a government that looks the other way, while taking their campaign donations. Ben Burgis has argued that we should nationalize Walmart, with good reason, since we're subsidizing the profits of billionaires without serving the interests of the majority of the public. Contrary to Capitalist propaganda this doesn't mean incredible inefficiency assuming we provide full disclosure and hire people that actually want to do a good job at it. If this isn't done then we should still demand full disclosure and many other regulations to protect both workers and consumers, possibly breaking them up, assuming we want to continue pretending this is a free market system, although that hasn't worked out well in the past when they undid similar reforms.

Instead the media is helping them provide a massive amount of propaganda to make them seem like they're providing great opportunities for their workers and suppliers, including what looks like a "rags to riches" story about someone starting to make products in her kitchen before selling to Target and Walmart. Anyone familiar with Walmart's business practices must severely doubt the credibility of this story. Despite their propaganda they still have massive problems including higher crime than other stores, even if they're trying to cover it up, and they often respond with excessive force, sometimes even against innocent people, yet another police officer received "qualified immunity" again this month in another case of excessive force.

In another amazing case of overkill, a Virginia man who was charged with a bar-code swap underpaying by $31.50 was arrested by a massive convoy of police with a mobile command center that spent hours searching his home. He was sentenced to five years in jail, with all but one day suspended, and there was no explanation from the police for this massive over reaction. It must have cost the tax payers thousands of dollars for this just to intimidate people under-scanning, allowing Walmart to have the increased profits by saving a little money on employees working the registers, but a lot of this savings is spent on security to catch people, which is virtual, if not literal, entrapment!

In addition to the crash that killed one person Walmart had at least another half a dozen major crashes police chases or other automobile crimes, not counting fender benders, including one theft suspect that crashed into three cruisers, another T-bone crash and several other major accidents.

They also had at least one more arson and a major fire at a tractor trailer that exploded, doing an enormous amount of damage to two additional trailers next to it. No explanation for the cause of this one has been provided.

There were also about eight knife attacks including three stabbings, several threats and at least two attacks with a bat, one where a man just arbitrarily hit a women he supposedly didn't even know. There were, as usual, more attacks on customers, workers or police, petty arguments about baby wipes that escalated, someone who pulled out brass knuckles after being told to wear a mask and several other arguments over masks. They have more serial thieves who repeatedly walk out with thousands of dollars of merchandise, partly as a result of their store design, reliance on self-checkout and other corner cutting. When this happens, the saving from the corner cutting goes to executives, but a large portion of the expenses is paid for by tax payers, subsidizing Walmart's high crime problem and profits.

Walmart had at least one more recall of a crock-pot that opened suddenly over a hundred times, that were actually reported, and causing about a hundred burns. There may have been Romaine lettuce contaminated with E.coli, although it's unclear whether it resulted in a recall and a woman found hard plastic which she thought could be dangerous in Walmart brand ravioli.

Walmart is expanding into insurance for pets; what is rarely reported by mainstream media, which makes a fortune selling insurance ads, is that customers can never get their moneys worth on this and should keep insurance purchases to a minimum, due to the fundamentals of insurance, which is pooled risk, meaning they have to subtract expenses and profit before paying claims so the odds have to be rigged against the consumer. Furthermore, when it comes to life insurance, or many other policies, they provide an incentive for massive amount of fraud, and even murder. When they introduced insurance for babies, which is totally unnecessary dozens of children were killed; so it's no surprise that when they introduced it for pets there were pets killed for insurance. But corporations are only concerned with profits even if it means fraud and providing incentive for murder and abuse.

Walmart also botched a purchase of a shed initially only sending him half of it taking it back leaving him with nothing, including the money he paid for it, finally delivering it only after it was reported by the media. They're expanding more into driver-less cars and drones; if they can't get simple things right, how do you think they'll do with this technology, or with increased influence on the healthcare system, which could impact people's safety?

Mexico is investigating Walmart for antitrust violations, following the lead of several other countries, while our government continues to bend over backwards to let them get away with anything. There's more evidence every month showing that the ruling elite have a revolving door exchanging management between companies that are supposed to compete, and that the oligarchs have interlocking board members and stockholders, showing they're not really competing against each other, instead dividing up the market, which is one more reason to nationalize them.

Another worker got fed up with being treated like dirt at Walmart and quit with a bang, over the PA system telling everyone about how Walmart and some of their managers treat their workers, and exposing racism sexual harassment and several other problems. This isn't the first time workers quit in a spectacular manner, including another teenage worker that also used the PA system to tell everyone that "no one should ever work here," a few years ago, and at least four or five workers, if not much more that made videos of their departures, in at least one case knocking things off the shelves, often telling people about how Walmart abuses their workers.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2020. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Trip to closed Tx. Walmart for baby wipes ends in arrests 11/01/2020

With a bottle of liquor on ice in their vehicle, a late-night trip to a closed McAllen Walmart for baby wipes landed two men in jail on charges of resisting arrest.

The disturbance happened outside of the Walmart at 2800 W. Nolana on Oct. 26 when employees there called police because two people entered the store, which was closed, demanding to buy baby wipes, authorities say.

McAllen police charged 27-year-old Pharr resident Jacob Joel Nieto with two counts of harassment of a public servant and a count of resisting arrest. Junior Ivon Solis, a 32-year-old McAllen resident, is charged with resisting arrest.

When told the store was closed and there was no working cash register, one of the men became upset, saying, “Y’all (expletive) need to let me buy baby wipes the door open so it means the store is open for (expletive) business!” police say in the probable cause affidavit. Complete article

Nationalize Walmart 10/28/2020 by Ben Burgis

Walmart is the largest private-sector employer in the United States, and it’s an important source of low-cost groceries for consumers around the country. It also pays poverty wages, busts unions, and drives economic inequality. Luckily, there is an economically viable route to solving those ills: bring the megacorporation under public ownership.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon made headlines earlier this month for urging Congress to “get a stimulus deal done.” In his comments on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he said that a new round of stimulus was important for the sake of “small and medium-sized businesses.” Larger firms, he said, had been better able to “weather the storm” of the pandemic.

He didn’t mention that Walmart itself has done a whole lot better than just “weathering the storm.” The company’s second-quarter results, published in August, showed that its e-commerce sales had gone up by a whopping 97 percent since the beginning of the pandemic. Already the largest private-sector employer in the United States, Walmart has hired half a million new “associates” this year.

All of this has added $43.2 billion to the already-massive fortune of the Walton family, which owns just under half of the company stock. To put that in perspective, the family was already making more than a combined 43 percent of all Americans before the pandemic.

Nor is this wealth being shared throughout the company. “Associates” who have worked there for twenty years are still making less than $15 an hour. The company has long been a notorious union-buster, surveilling employees, forcing them to sit through anti-union “training” videos, setting up a hotline for managers to report union activity, and even preemptively closing stores to foil unionization efforts. It also drives economic inequality in society as a whole through the “Walmart Effect,” whereby both suppliers and competitors are incentivized to slash their own employees’ wages.

So what’s the solution? Complete article

Mesa Ariz. man says Walmart "botched" his $1,000 online shed purchase 11/02/2020

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS5) -- When you enter Dennis Miller's backyard, you'll quickly see where he's leveled off an area to put a shed. “This is the garden area,” Dennis said as he showed 3 On Your Side around. “And this is where the shed it going to go."

Inside his Mesa home, Dennis showed us an online picture of the shed he purchased. “It's got double doors, metal doors and a skylight on top," he said as he pointed to the picture.

The shed is 8’ X 7’ and he purchased it from Walmart.com. The price was $973.62. "Yeah, I figured I'd order it. I paid for it. And a week or two later, I would have the shed."

Well, the shed did arrive, but only half of it. Dennis took this picture of what he got. It says, "box 2 of 2" on the side of the big box. "Well, I go, 'where is box 1?'" Dennis remembers thinking. ........

After a month of complaining to Walmart, Dennis says the retailer finally picked up box 2. But get this, Walmart also kept Dennis' money. "So, you have no shed and you’re out almost $1,000?" 3 On Your Side’s Gary Harper asked. “Yeah,” Dennis replied. “About $973." Complete article

Why does Walmart think it has a right to play in healthcare? Top health exec Osborne explains 11/02/2020

The healthcare industry has been an attractive one for outside disrupters of late.

In 2019, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway shook up the traditional landscape by unveiling their still-mysterious joint venture Haven. Tech giants like Apple and Google have thrown their hats in the ring to chip off a piece of an industry that accounts for nearly 20% of the U.S. gross domestic product.

And then there's Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, which made a splash a year ago when it opened the first of its clinics in Dallas, Georgia. Complete article

Trump DOJ Accused of Trying to Commandeer Walmart Pharmacists 10/30/2020

A fter judges, regulatory reform has been the Trump administration’s main conservative policy goal. On the campaign trail, the president trumpets regulatory cutbacks and warns that Joe Biden, if elected president, would regulate American life “into oblivion.” So why is President Trump’s Justice Department levying regulatory threats against one of America’s most prominent companies on the eve of the election?

Last week, Walmart filed a remarkable lawsuit in federal court. It accused the Justice Department of making lawless demands of the company: attempting to commandeer the company’s pharmacists as deputy law enforcement officers against opioid abuse, without any basis in federal law. And it asked a federal judge to declare that the Justice Department cannot force Walmart to pay immense financial settlements to avoid indictment.

The complaint contains explosive allegations: that federal prosecutors offered no evidence of actual criminal wrongdoing by Walmart yet “declared their intention to ‘embarrass’ Walmart” with a criminal indictment “to pressure the company into paying a massive civil penalty”; that a federal prosecutor cited Walmart’s $1 billion in charitable giving last year as evidence of what Walmart could afford to pay the Justice Department; and that the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas threatened to send a prosecutor around the country lobbying other prosecutors to file other cases against Walmart if the company didn’t pay up. Comcast is in talks with Walmart to develop and distribute smart TVs 11/03/2020

Comcast Corp. CMCSA, 3.73% is in talks with Walmart Inc. WMT, 0.35% to develop and distribute smart TVs, according to people familiar with the matter, as the cable giant looks to become a dominant hub for streaming apps, not just TV channels.

Under the terms the companies are discussing, retail giant Walmart would promote TV sets running Comcast software, and would get a share of recurring revenue from Comcast in return, the people said. A third party would likely manufacture the sets, and one possibility is that they could carry Walmart branding, they said.

The Comcast software, drawing on expertise the company has developed and technology it has acquired, would aim to help consumers navigate through their streaming apps and watch programming. That would put Comcast up against tech companies that already are the major players in the streaming era’s living room— Apple TV maker Apple Inc. AAPL, 2.90%, Fire TV maker Amazon.com Inc. How Many People Work at Walmart in Each State, and What They Are Paid 11/04/2020

Walmart, the largest employer in the United States, employing about 1.5 million Americans, has been at the center of controversies over its low wages for years. In 2020, the average wage of an hourly worker in a Walmart store in the U.S. was $14.76, which comes to between $25,000 and $30,000 annually for a full-time employee.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed store facts from Walmart’s corporate site to identify how many people in each state work at Walmart as sales associates and how much they are paid.

The average wage of a Walmart field worker, which takes into account both full- and part-time workers, does not differ much from state to state. It varies from $13.42 an hour in Idaho to $16.02 an hour in New Hampshire. Compared to the state minimum wage and cost of living, however, employees in some states fare much better than others.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and 19 states have not altered it. Fifteen states have set a minimum wage over $10.00 an hour. Complete article

Vermont state senators say Walmart ‘cruel’ not seeking hazard pay 11/05/2020

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Five Vermont state senators said Thursday that they were disturbed to learn that Walmart will not seek hazard pay grants for its Vermont employees who worked during the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a Thursday press release, the senators, led by Senate President Pro Tem Tim Ashe, said the grants of $1,200 or $2,000 are paid for by the state, but employers must apply on behalf of their workers.

They said the workers put themselves at risk while most Americans stayed at home.

“Their decision, cruel under any circumstances, is especially unthinkable since the grants are intended to thank essential workers who stayed on the job in high risk positions in the earliest days of the COVID pandemic,” they said in the press release. Complete article

Woman arrested after refusing to wear mask in Oregon Walmart 11/06/2020

EAGLE POINT, Ore. — A woman was arrested at the Eagle Point Walmart this week after she was asked to leave because she was not wearing a mask. Her husband caught the incident on camera.

Lakewood: No On-Duty Officers For NY Walmart 11/11/2020

LAKEWOOD — A motion to authorize on-duty officers with the Lakewood-Busti Police Department to work as special police protection at Walmart during the upcoming holiday shopping season was denied by the Lakewood Village Board during Monday night’s meeting.

The board’s decision to decline the motion came at the suggestion of village attorney John LaMancuso and police Chief John Bentley, who advised against the measure due to liability concerns. Further discussion was also tabled until the board’s next meeting on Nov. 23.

A representative from Walmart had requested a “cruiser and police officers in uniform” during the weekends of Nov. 14, 21 and 28, according to Mayor Randy Holcomb. Bentley had been approached with the idea from a representative of the local police benevolent association. Walmart representatives had offered to reimburse or donate wage amounts the officers had worked.

“They initially came to me and asked if I would allow them to do this as private security, but in uniform and in a car. … I refused to do that,” Bentley said. “That part of it I still refuse to do. … If they want to do this as a PBA and work as private security officers out of uniform and without a patrol car, that’s something that’s on them. That’s something they’ll have to deal with for whatever rate of pay it is that Walmart would be willing to pay them.”

“I think it’s advisable to avoid a connection between a donation and the service being provided,” LaMancuso said. “We reviewed some of the opinions that have been provided by comptroller’s opinions and the opinions of the attorney general. Unfortunately, those opinions basically say that police services are to be provided in a community everywhere where appropriate and they shouldn’t be provided in certain places in exchange for additional monies from private entities such as Walmart.” Complete article

Want Speedy Delivery? Walmart Is Revving Things Up With Self-Driving Cars 11/10/2020

When it comes to ecommerce delivery and innovation, Amazon’s AMZN +2.9% drones and driverless cars come to mind. But Walmart Inc. WMT +1.6% is no slacker. The world’s largest retailer was one of the first to adopt and perfect buy online, pickup in store, and deliver groceries into consumers’ homes and straight to their refrigerators.

Walmart today said it will be piloting delivery via all-electric self-driving cars with Cruise, a General Motors GM -1%majority-owned company. The retailer is conducting the test in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Cruise’s fleet of vehicles is powered by 100 percent renewable energy, supporting Walmart’s goal of zero emissions by 2040.

As part of the pilot, which begins early next year, customers can place an order from their local store and have it delivered, contact-free, by one of Cruise’s all-electric self-driving cars. The technology has the potential to not only save customers time and money but also is helpful to the planet, the retailer said. Complete article

Walmart agrees to sell its business in Argentina 11/06/2020

NEW YORK -- Walmart will sell its business in Argentina as it continues to restructure its international division.

Walmart will continue to support the business transition services and sourcing agreements under Grupo de Narvaez, the company that is acquiring it, but it will not retain an equity stake.

Walmart Argentina began operations in 1995 with a single shop in Buenos Aires. It has since expanded to more than 90 locations and 9,000 workers under the brands Changomas, Mi Changomas, Walmart Supercenter and Punto Mayorista. The Changomas, Mi Changomas, and Punto Mayorista signs will remain on the stores, but Walmart Supercenters will be renamed.

Walmart operates stores in 27 countries under various names and has taken some lumps as it has attempted to export its low-price strategy overseas. The Bentonville, Arkansas, retailer has given up on operations in several international markets over the past 15 years including Germany and South Korea. In many cases, it has lacked the scale to press local suppliers on price as it does in the United States. Complete article

A New Level of Fraud: Pets Are Getting Killed for the Insurance Money 11/15/2020

Insurance fraud has reached a new low in the U.K., where authorities have discovered a rise in claims on pet insurance policies.

According to the Association of British Insurers, last year £1,929,900 ($3 million) was collected in pet insurance compared to £420,000 ($667, 842) in 2009, the Telegraph reports. In 2010, 2.3 million cats and dogs were insured, and since almost any type of animal can be insured, experts are bracing for an even bigger influx in dishonest claims.

The new scheme includes pet owners selling or killing their own pets to claim insurance money, as well as staging “fake accidents” to conceal previous injuries or conditions not covered by the policy. Some insurers believe people go as far as to deliberately lose animals or make up their existence.

Experts are also questioning the involvement of veterinarians, who might prescribe unnecessary and expensive medicine or treat animals who are not actually sick in order to collect money. Carys Clarke, a solicitor who works as an insurance fraud investigator, told Daily Mail that vets are not required to use the cheapest drugs available and can charge up to double the price for treatment. “These are particularly worrying types of fraud because it often requires the help of a vet,” she said. Walmart and McDonald’s have the most workers on food stamps and Medicaid, new study shows 11/18/2020

A sizable number of the recipients of federal aid programs such as Medicaid and food stamps are employed by some of the biggest and more profitable companies in the United States, chief among them Walmart and McDonald’s, according to a new report from Congress’s nonpartisan watchdog.

The Government Accountability Office undertook the study at the behest of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), to answer questions about the relationship between employers and the federal assistance programs. The report draws on February data from agencies in 11 states that administer Medicaid and the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP or food stamps.

Walmart was one of the top four employers of SNAP and Medicaid beneficiaries in every state. McDonald’s was in the top five of employers with employees receiving federal benefits in at least nine states.

In the nine states that responded about SNAP benefits — Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington — Walmart was found to have employed about 14,500 workers receiving the benefit, followed by McDonald’s with 8,780, according to Sanders’ team. In six states that reported Medicaid enrollees, Walmart again topped the list, with 10,350 employees, followed by McDonald’s with 4,600. Complete article

Walmart to open health clinics on the South and West sides of Chicago Ill. at two stores reopening after civil unrest 11/18/2020

Walmart will offer in-store health clinics at two Supercenter stores on the South and West sides that are reopening Friday after being damaged during civil unrest this summer.

The health clinics at stores in the Chatham and Austin neighborhoods are the first the retail giant is opening in Chicago after a Georgia pilot of the model, which aims to add health services to stores in underserved neighborhoods.

The stores in Chatham and Austin had been closed since being looted during civil unrest at the end of May over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, leaving fewer options for residents to shop for groceries and other necessities.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon pledged to reopen the stores, along with five other Chicago locations that closed during the unrest, at a June event with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, saying the retailer was committed to staying in the city even though “these stores, in many cases, are not profitable." The Class War at Walmart 11/20/2020 by Luke Savage

CEOs at companies like Walmart and McDonald's continue to pull down multimillion-dollar salaries while their workers' wages stagnate. And the whole system is underwritten by what amounts to a massive public subsidy.

In 2018, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon took home more than $23 million. By contrast, McDonalds’s Chris Kempczinski was paid a mere $18 million last year — falling just short of making two thousand times the median wage for workers at his company.

As many businesses across the country struggle to stay afloat amid rolling pandemic lockdowns, many of America’s largest corporations are doing just fine. Better than fine, in fact: it emerged this week that Walmart’s profits surged during the third quarter of 2020, exceeding $5 billion with McDonalds’s profits jumping almost 5 percent to just under $2 billion. The pandemic has proven especially lucrative for big retailers, the largest fifteen (including Walmart) collectively making $60.8 billion in profits in 2020 so far — an increase of $14.6 billion from last year.

All told, it’s a stark illustration of the extent to which the American economy works like a giant Ponzi scheme that thrives on the labor of workers paid next to nothing for the benefit of the exorbitantly rich. A deeply exploitative arrangement, it’s also one effectively subsidized by the taxpayer — as a new report published by Congress’s Government Accountability Office (GAO) makes vividly clear.

Commissioned by Bernie Sanders, who made the low wages of companies like McDonald’s and Walmart a centerpiece of his recent presidential campaign, the study uses data from February gathered from agencies across eleven states charged with administering Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), more commonly known as food stamps. Mexico Walmart ordered to sell tequila at 19 pesos after sign error 11/20/2020

The store would not honor the price until the consumer protection agency insisted

Saying it didn’t matter that the store had made an error, representatives from Mexico’s consumer protection agency, Profeco, told staff at a Morelia, Michoacán, Walmart this week that it had to let eight shoppers buy tequila at the advertised price of 19 pesos per bottle.

In total, the shoppers were allowed to purchase 81 bottles at the low price after they called Profeco to say that Walmart’s staff had refused to sell them the 990-milliliter bottles of José Cuervo at the 19-peso price on a sign in the store. After refusing to sell them the liquor, Walmart management then asked the customers to leave, Profeco said.

The agency arrived at the store soon afterward. By the time Profeco approached Walmart management about the issue, staff had already hung up a new sign for the tequila at a price of 169 pesos per bottle. However, Profeco told the store it had to honor the price anyway for those eight shoppers who had tried to buy the liquor while the sign was still on display. Complete article

W.Va. Supreme Court affirms $17 million jury verdict for woman injured at Walmart 11/20/2020

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Supreme Court affirmed a nearly $17 million jury verdict for a woman who was injured in 2019 when staffers tried to detain a shoplifter in Walmart.

A lawyer for 53-year-old Diane Ankrom says employees were trying to detain a shoplifter when he ran into Ankrom's shopping cart, which was carrying her granddaughter.

Ankrom fell to the ground with the cart falling on top of her. Her lawyers say she has had multiple surgeries and has been admitted to the hospital over 20 times. Complete article

The last time we wrote about JoyRun, it was raising $10 million. Today, the Bay Area startup has some very different news to share, as it becomes part of Walmart as Walmart has purchased select assets in a bid to enhance its supply chain. The mega-retailer announced today that it has acquired “select assets – including the talent, technology platform and IP” from the company, in a bid to incorporate its peer-to-peer food and drink delivery service into its own last-mile logistics.

Walmart EVP Srini Venkatesan notes that the app has amassed a network of 540 third-party merchant partners and north of 30,000 people who have delivered goods with the service since its launch half-a-decade ago. JoyRun’s service is a bit of twist on more standard delivery apps like Seamless and Uber Eats. Complete article

Two Companies, Everseen And Pactum, Show Artificial Intelligence's Impact On Walmart And All Retail 11/23/2020

The most obvious way that artificial intelligence (AI) can impact retailers is to help consumers choose the right products when they shop. But there’s another less apparent way that AI is affecting retail right now that’s happening in places consumers don’t see. Two great examples are new AI technologies from companies called Everseen and Pactum that are changing how retail works from the inside out.

What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is different from other software in that the program itself performs problem solving and keeps improving itself. Artificial intelligence, like smart people, learns and improves from experience, understands what it did wrong and integrates what it learns into the software so that it doesn’t repeat mistakes the next time around. That’s not just amazing, it changes the way competition happens among creators of AI software. Here’s why: once an AI system is implemented, it self-improves immediately. It’s almost impossible for a competitor with an equivalent program to catch up; the same program created a year earlier will always have a year’s more experience to improve and the later-created program will never be able to match it. That has created a rush to create AI programs because being the second one to the starting gate is a far weaker proposition than in other businesses. The stakes are high to get into the market first with a system that works.

Why Retail Is A Target For Artificial Intelligence

Retail has all the right ingredients to be an AI proving ground: As an industry it’s enormous, with over one million physical locations, 42 million jobs (including ancillary jobs), innumerable daily human interactions and over $5 trillion in U.S. revenue. The scale is important because all the data created by that much activity can only be processed by a machine. It is also a highly competitive industry so AI companies that can offer an advantage to a retailer will find ready customers. All that makes retail a great laboratory for the development of AI. Workers call on Walmart, Amazon and other retailers to bring back hazard pay ahead of holiday rush 11/23/2020

Though many grocery and retail chains offered extra pay — typically an additional $2 per hour — early in the pandemic, most have done away with those bonuses.

Workers at Walmart, Amazon, Kroger and other major retailers are calling on their employers to reinstate hazard pay and strengthen safety protocols ahead of the busy holiday shopping season as coronavirus infection rates skyrocket.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), which represents 900,000 grocery employees at chains such as Kroger, Safeway and Giant, on Monday urged retailers to do more to protect workers from the virus that has sickened more than 12.3 million Americans. Separately, the workers rights group United for Respect called on such employers as Walmart, Amazon and Petco to pay an extra $5 an hour for the duration of the pandemic. Although many grocery and retail chains offered extra pay — typically an additional $2 an hour — early in the pandemic, most have since done away with the premium.

At least 131 grocery workers have died of covid-19, according to the workers groups, though the actual death toll is probably much higher. Retailers are not generally required to report infections or deaths to health officials, employees or customers. All told, the virus has killed more than 256,000 Americans. Complete article

Profits are ‘soaring’ for large retailers—but frontline workers are barely earning more 11/27/2020

A new report from the Brookings Institute finds that while top retailers’ profits have “soared” during the coronavirus pandemic, pay for frontline workers has barely budged.

Brookings analyzed the earnings and compensation of frontline employees at 13 of the biggest retailers in the U.S. between March 13 and November 19 of this year, including Albertsons, Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, CVS Health, Dollar General, Home Depot, Kroger, Target and Walmart. While the companies in the report made an average of 39% more in profit this year compared to 2019, pay for their essential workers increased by just 10% on average, or $1.11 per hour, over the course of the pandemic.

And while some of these companies continue to make record profits, it has been over 130 days, on average, since many frontline workers have received any hazard pay at all, Brookings reports. Most of the companies have “offered only modest or negligible extra compensation to workers,” even as the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise across the country. Complete article
