There were at least ten shootings at Walmart this month as well as a couple more within a few hundred yards, including one where a kidnapping victim showed up at Walmart and the kidnapper committed suicide, in a neighboring parking lot. Four more of these shootings resulted in deaths on the premises, including one police involved shooting that resulted in protests a couple weeks after the fact after the family notified the public about their version of the event, which involved an unarmed African American the police claim was shoplifting and tried to hit them with a vehicle. One of the non-fatal shootings was also by a police officer, of a person allegedly assaulting patrons with a bat.
One of these shooting deaths was a suicide; and there was also another major shooting at Home Depot this month where two officers and a security guard were shot, killing one of the officers.
Another one of the shootings resulted in an arrest of Walmart's security guard for attempted murder in an incident where he was allegedly not involved in trying to prevent a crime but responding to an argument. This sin't the first time Walmart has had problems with their contracted security guards, in another incident a few years ago in Texas a guard, who was also a police officer, or at least he thought he was, was convicted for using a taser improperly against someone that was filming shopping carts then turned the camera on the officer when he objected. Apparently this officer was a reserve officer in a police department that later went defunct and was also charged with "working as private security jobs without holding a license as a security services contractor," Walmart responded by saying "they no longer use contract security guards at the store where this happened," however they didn't change their policies at other stores and still routinely hire local police officers with little or no public discussion about potential conflicts of interests. The guard charged with attempted murder this month wasn't a police officer but he's one of many asset protection officers that have been fired or charged after incidents without investigating the training or hiring practices, which is considered "Proprietary" or secret, even though the public may have been put at risk repeatedly as a result of these problems.
There were at least seven more gun related crimes at Walmart, including one, or perhaps two similar incidents, where a man causing a disturbance told police to shoot him, and three involving employees. One of these was an employee that was allegedly robbed at gunpoint during his break, and another was an employee that pulled a gun on another employee in an argument. Another one involved a security guard that was attacked with a stun gun.
Two explosive devises went off at a Sam's Club in California this month, which is extremely rare; the vast majority of bomb threats they get are nothing but threats; and most of the attempts to create actual bombs are incompetent and harmless, although this one didn't hurt anyone. Another one of the empty threats forced an evacuation and an employee was arrested as a result; this is fairly common, and on a few occasions they have claimed they had legitimate grievances they couldn't get addressed, although the media may not always report the motive, like the incident this month. When employees respond out of anger the blame is almost always completely put on them; however there are many other incidents where that shouldn't be the case, although the vast majority of them probably don't make the news at all.
There were also three more threats to blow up or shoot up Walmart including at least one that was by a disgruntled customer, and another that was teens that wanted to get the panic on camera, although there was no "active-shooter."
Citizens in one Missouri town are outraged because Walmart is tying up all their police resources after negotiating a tax break to come to town, causing the rest of town to pick up the tab while they may not be protected in other incidents, because their police are tied up. In Indiana the Attorney General was critical of their shoplifting program, which ignored the causes of their high crime problem and attempted to extract money from suspects in return for not turning them over to the police. This practice has been called extortion and several local police departments, courts, or legislators have banned it, but it hasn't been reported nationally and others may continue to use this practice.
One police officer, that apparently was highly trained with all kind of training certificates was charged with shoplifting and avoided arrest as a result of one of these programs, which didn't quite succeed in keeping his name out of the paper, although it's conceivable that this could be the type of incident covered up by these selective shoplifting programs, that aren't subject to public scrutiny. Another incident might involve something most people would refer to as vigilantism, where a concealed carrier saw an attempt to steal a TV and the concealed carrier holder attempted to stop him, threatening to use force then showing him his concealed carrier permit implying that he would shoot him. The police confirmed they responded to a call on the day in question, but told the public that this wasn't recommended. The media referred to him as a "good Samaritan," but the clear implication is that someone called them to report the incident and he seemed happy to brag about it looking down on someone stealing a cheap TV.
The media declined to report on how many similar incidents have resulted in much worse damage which is why the police recommend against his actions. Nor do they report on how Walmart's store design, corner cutting, use of self-checkout lanes, union busting activities, and bad service leading to many angry customers that on rare occasions act out like the threats to shoot up the store or bomb it might contribute to their high crime problems. Even if they don't believe some of these causes contribute to their problems tehy still make no attempt to figure out what does.
In addition to the four people that died in shootings on the premises, and another suicide in the kidnapping, there were also a couple bodies found on the premises, which were considered natural causes and not suspicious, and another death as a result of a car fire. This is a total of at least seven deaths on the premises plus one more nearby.
On top of the car fire killing one person, there was at least ten more crashes including another one that resulted in a fire. At least five pedestrians were hit in three separate incidents; other incidents involved crashes going into at least a dozen cars, and two vehicles crashing into Walmart itself, one that went straight through the glass doors and didn't stop until getting to the produce section. One of these incidents was a crash with a front end loader, which is at least the forth or fifth similar incident with construction equipment, often stolen in the last few years.
There were at least three fires, possibly all arson, this month, one in the brush behind the store but the other two in the store itself. Three people were stabbed in two incidents and a fourth threatened in another.
There are routinely may incidents where the police are asking the public for help catching petty products including one incident where they asked for help finding a person in a wheel chair with no legs who allegedly stole a modest amount of merchandise. Another incident asks for help finding someone that stole diapers, and a third involved a violent arrest over only $41 worth of goods. In the past there have been violent incidents over a 59 cent donut, shootings over theft of sandpaper or underwear.
There was another incident where they found razor blades on a shopping cart this month, which is almost certainly a shoplifting technique so it can be expected to happen repeatedly, unless they find some way of recognizing the cause of their high crime problems and reducing it, which isn't likely without pressure from the public. Another incident involves someone cutting themselves after finding razors in new jeans bought at Walmart which wouldn't be for the same reasons but might be an intentional effort to sabotage merchandise, which although much less common isn't unprecedented either.
There was also at least two pepper spray assaults, a variety of brawls robberies, purse snatching etc.
Walmart had another nightmare lawsuit trying to sue a an injured former employee to retrieve money they already spent on her health care after an accident. When she one a settlement for her long term care Walmart decided they wanted it all leaving her destitute again and numerous courts ruled in Walmart's favor. they didn't change their policy until after it turned into a PR nightmare, which is truly astonishing and is becoming increasingly common. Many wealthy corporations are suing for the limited funds from poor or middle class people to increase profits, but ironically a large percentage of this can't be collected or just goes to court costs, which should raise major questions about the so-called justice system.
Another more recent incident during a wind storm led them to close the store and force several elderly woman to wait out in the cold and wind for over an hour. These types of incidents are things that no small local business would ever allow to happen yet they're semi-routine at Walmart where the people making decisions have no idea how they're being implemented, and those implementing them are trained not to accept no for an answer or use any discretionary thinking skills.
This same company is trying to dramatically expand it's influence on the health care system by acquiring insurance companies, more pharmacies, and conducting health screenings. They've been involved in at least two high profile recalls this month for salmonella in eggs and E. Coli in lettuce; however the reports on them in national media on television often decline to mention that these products are mostly from Walmart, although internet articles, that get much less traffic are more likely to report this. There was also another recall on beef, although this doesn't appear to be as widespread.
Their influence on the national media has also been displayed when they reported the remodeling of hundreds of store nationwide with hundreds of articles across the country coming out within a few hours of each other in what was presumably a well planned public relations promotion with no disclosure in the articles. The vast majority of the public will only see one or two of these articles without realizing the implication, which may seem minor to most people, but it is an indication of an interlocking oligarchy with many connections with other corporations and media companies that enable them to coordinate their public relations and control their image.
Walmart announced that they nominated McDonald's CEO to the board and additional interlocking board members were displayed in their shareholders meeting announcement which shows that many of Doug McMillon's relatives are working for Walmart, and their decisions about who they do business with often seems to be based on relations and personal connections not competition. They have interlocking board members or other leading management positions with many other investment corporations including Madrone Capital Partners, PMG International, Morgan Stanley, RZC Investments, American Airlines, Yahoo!, Woolworths, Instagram, Pizza Express, Wagamama and who knows how many other corporations they have corporate ties to.
They also have numerous management members like Rachel Brand moving in and out of government, often in positions that are supposed to involve holding corporations like Walmart accountable for suppressing worker rights or antitrust violations, which are now a bad joke! This is why government often seems like a fully owned subsidiary of corporate America!
Finding these financial connections is relatively easy, but there are so many more that it would take weeks if not months to find more than a small fraction of them, which is enough to confirm what many have suspected for years, that this isn't a free enterprise system with diverse companies competing against each other, as they claim, at all; it's an oligarchy system where the market is divided up by a small percentage of the public controlling the vast majority of the economic system.
This is what enabled Walmart's CEO to make 1,188 times as much as their workers, and it enabled them to keep reporting of this and many other corrupt practices out of national media and relegated to low profile media reports the vast majority of the public never reads, which is how they use their control of the media to falsely convince the public this is a "free market!"
It also enables them to break promises like cutting the CEO's bonus so they can increase shareholders dividends, which doesn't even consider giving either workers of consumers a better deal. It also enables them to prevent most people from even realizing when a share holders proposal that might require them to measure pay gaps is coming up and ensure that it will be defeated. This will enable them to keep most of the economic unfairness secret.
There is little or no accountablity in corporate America which is why insane activities are now semi-routine and protecting consumers or workers isn't a priority at all.
They now often have fights in the aisles with cereal flying, or drunks driving their scooters down the highway.
People that make dramatic video's about quitting at Walmart while notifying consumers how bad they treat their customers and filming the management as they call the police become national stars in video's going viral.
A customer that uses the intercom system to call for help notifying everyone in the store that he's a customer in the sporting section that can't find workers, and eventually millions of people around the country when the video goes viral is reported everywhere but the national media that covers for Walmart's bad service!
Strange things happen at Walmart!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in April 2018. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart to drive emission reductions in China operations 04/02/2018
BEIJING – Walmart recently unveiled a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its global supply chain by 1 billion metric tons — a gigaton — by 2030, equal to the emissions from more than 211 million average passenger vehicles in a year. In China, the company has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 million metric tons as part of this goal.
Through Project Gigaton, Walmart wants to engage all its export and domestic suppliers in China, starting with 100 of the company’s top suppliers. Walmart said more than 400 suppliers in China, India, the United States and other countries have joined the program which Walmart will continue to expand.
“As a global company, we are proud to use our reach to help create a more sustainable future, for our customers, associates, and the communities we serve,” Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon said in a speech he made at Tsinghua Univ. “We believe that business can accelerate environmental progress while delivering economic growth. That’s why we’re committed to taking a shared value approach to our work in China and around the world.” Complete article

Walmart's talks with an insurance giant could be part of an assault on Amazon Prime 04/03/2018
Walmart is said to be considering an acquisition of the health insurer Humana.
Humana has for years had a close relationship with Walmart, partnering on health plans and other initiatives. The conversations underway now also could lead to a closer relationship without a takeover, Reuters reports.
The combination could help Walmart's existing healthcare businesses — including its pharmacy and health clinics — as healthcare companies continue to merge, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley.
A deal could also help Walmart confront Amazon Prime memberships, which the analysts describe as "fortifying an impenetrable moat" around Amazon's customers.
News that Walmart may be interested in acquiring Humana makes a lot more sense than it first appears to.
Humana has held early-stage talks with Walmart focused primarily on new partnerships, according to multiple news reports. And while you might think of Walmart as a giant retail business, but it's also one of the largest pharmacy chains in the US, behind only Walgreens and CVS.
Walmart has long had a focus on affordable prescriptions as well, offering some generic medications for $4. And Humana has historically had a close relationship with Walmart: for example, they have a co-branded Medicare drug plan and an initiative that provides healthy-food credits.
That pharmacy component — along with the small healthcare clinic Walmart also has — holds the key to why a deal with an insurer might make sense, analysts at Morgan Stanley said in a note on Monday. Complete article

Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill Issues Opinion Critical of Retailer Anti-Shoplifting Program 04/03/2018
(INDIANAPOLIS) - An anti-shoplifting program developed by Corrective Education Company ("CEC") and implemented by Walmart at 36 Indiana locations created legal issues and questions that warranted a review by the Indiana Attorney General.
Upon receiving notification of the Attorney General's concerns, Walmart voluntarily agreed to discontinue the program.
The Attorney General's Office began its review of the CEC program following a request for a legal opinion by Tippecanoe County Prosecuting Attorney Pat Harrington. Harrington reported his concerns that the CEC agreements employed by Walmart in Tippecanoe County were "private" agreements to relinquish law enforcement action, which Harrington believed to be inappropriate and contrary to law.
The Attorney General's review, which included the cooperation of CEC and Walmart officials, determined that the retailer was offering to forgo contacting the police in exchange for suspects agreeing to enter into their program. Indiana law is clear on the manner and authority in which retailers may lawfully detain shoplifting suspects and law enforcement's role in that process.

BlackRock is stripping Walmart, Dick’s from some of its funds over guns 04/05/2018
The world’s largest money manager is stripping retailers that sell guns out of some current and planned exchange-traded funds, the latest sign that weapons sellers are facing the same scrutiny from investors as producers.
Walmart Inc. WMT, +0.77% Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. DKS, +1.08% and Kroger Co. KR, -1.33% are among the retailers that will be ruled out of new environmental social and governance-focused funds BlackRock Inc. is planning, a spokeswoman for the world’s largest asset manager said Thursday. The retailers were among those who said they would no longer sell guns to anyone under 21 in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
The New York firm after the shooting went public with the questions that it is asking gun manufacturers and distributors and businesses. Investors and businesses alike have put renewed pressure on gun makers and sellers, spurred in part by student advocacy efforts nationwide.
BlackRock plans to strip all gun sellers and retailers including Kroger from its current lineup of seven so-called ESG funds, which have some $2.2 billion in assets. Those products had minimal exposure to such firms. Complete article

California police kill black father with barrage of bullets in Walmart parking lot 04/16/2018
The killing of 26-year-old Diante Yarber, who is believed to have been unarmed, is being called a brutal case of excessive police force
California police fired what sounds like more than 30 bullets at a packed car in a shopping store parking lot, killing a black father of three and injuring a young woman in the latest US law enforcement shooting to spark backlash.
Police in Barstow, two hours outside of Los Angeles, killed 26-year-old Diante Yarber, who was believed to be unarmed and was driving his cousin and friends to a local Walmart on the morning of 5 April. Police have alleged that Yarber was “wanted for questioning” in a stolen vehicle case and that he “accelerated” the car towards officers when they tried to stop him, but his family and their attorney argued that the young father posed no threat and should not have been treated as a suspect in the first place.

Walmart changed policy after claiming an injured worker's settlement became a PR nightmare 04/05/2018
After Deborah Shank, a shelf stocker at Walmart, suffered a several brain injury when her car was rammed by a truck in 2000, her family reached a settlement with the company that left her a $417,000 trust fund for long-term care.
That’s when Walmart sued the Missouri mother of three to collect reimbursement for the $470,000 its health care plan spent on her medical care.
Daphne Moore, Walmart’s corporate communications director, described it as “very sad case” and said, “We understand that people will naturally have an emotional and sympathetic reaction.”
But the company said, “the reality is that its health plan must protect its assets so that it can pay the future claims of other associates and their family members.” .....
But two federal courts ruled for Walmart in the case (which didn't involve the Rawlings Group), and the company wouldn’t back down. Complete article

Elderly women left out in the cold at NY Walmart for over an hour 04/05/2018
Rochester, N.Y. – Five elderly women say they were forced to stand outside in Wednesday’s windstorm for more than an hour.
This happened at the Gates Walmart on Chili Avenue, when the 60-plus mile per hour high winds blew out the electricity. It started off as a typical Walmart run for Deborah Archer, 62, and her 93-year-old friend, Lucile Good.
Archer went to the store to pick up her blood pressure and diabetes medications when the power was knocked out.
"They told us to stop shopping and bring whatever you had to the front," Archer said. “So me and Ms. Lucile go to sit down at Dunkin Donuts to wait for our Lyft Line bus to come pick us up. And this young man comes behind us, 'You have to leave; You have to leave right now.'"
“I said, ‘Well where am I supposed to stand? There's no other place for me to stand other than in the elements, where it's blowing - turning over tractor trailers,’" Archer said.
Archer said they weren't alone. Three other elderly women were also told to leave the store, one said to be in a wheelchair. Complete article

San Antonio PD officer shoots man accused of assaulting patrons with a bat in a Tx. Walmart parking lot 04/07/2018
An officer-involved shooting near a Walmart in North Central San Antonio left one man in critical condition Saturday night, according to officials.
San Antonio police say an officer responded to a call of a man allegedly attacking people with a club and a bat at the Walmart at 8500 Jones Maltsberger Road, about 9:40 p.m., Saturday.
When the officer arrived, witness pointed to a man near a drainage ditch on the side of the store. The officer confronted the man and chased him into the ditch where the man then pulled a knife, SAPD Chief William McManus said.
The officer attempted to subdue the man by using a stun gun, but according to McManus, the device did not shock the suspect, but instead sent a shock to the officer, who was standing in water at the time.
The officer then drew his service weapon and when the man continued to resist and advanced on the officer, the officer shot him three times in the upper torso, McManus said. The suspect was transported to University Hospital in critical condition. Complete article

Ill. Letter: Eliminate tax breaks for Walmart 04/09/2018
It is my understanding that President Trump blames China for destroying the U.S. economy. If this is the case, why did he give Walmart a massive tax break?
It has been documented that 70 percent of what Walmart sells is manufactured in China. In fact Walmart has at least 5,000 suppliers of Chinese goods supplying their about 3,800 stores in the U.S.
According to a study by the Economic Policy Institute, because of the massive imports, Walmart has eliminated or displaced 400,000 American jobs. Further, Walmart has significantly added to the massive trade deficit with China.
It is estimated that Walmart federal tax rate will drop from 32 percent to 21 percent because of Trump’s change to the tax system. If we gave every one of the 1.4 million Walmart U.S. employees a $1,000 bonus, the Walmart family will still get at least $2 billion to help them import more Chinese-made products, thus eliminating more jobs and adding to the massive trade deficit.
So if Trump wants to win the trade war with China and create more jobs, start by eliminating the Walmart tax break and place a stiff tariff on all Chinese products imported to the U.S.

One dead, two injured in Boise Idaho car fire at Overland Walmart 04/10/2018 (Title of this article was changed after initially being posted naming Walmart, which is not uncommon.)
A 5-year-old girl died at the scene of a car fire early Tuesday morning that left two others hospitalized, according to a release from the Ada County Coroner’s Office.
The child has not yet been identified, though the coroner’s office said it has “presumptive identification” and is awaiting DNA analysis. The cause and manner of the girl’s death were still pending late Tuesday morning.
An adult woman and a toddler both suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fire and were hospitalized. Police said Tuesday afternoon that they were asleep in the car.
“A preliminary investigation shows that there was a portable heating device in the vehicle that is believed to have started the fire. When first responders arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed and members of the Boise Fire Department put out the fire,” Boise police said in a release. Complete article
Tragedy in Walmart parking lot hardly a first for retailer 04/10/2018
Walmart parking lots have been known for playing host to both passing travelers who need a night's rest and the homeless who live out of their cars, according to reports.
“A lot of travelers stay in their R.V.s and don’t interact with other people in the parking lot,” the Times said. “They pass the hours by eating, watching television, spending time with their pets or sleeping.”
The Times listed “standards of etiquette” for overnight residents: Don’t sit in lawn chairs and buy something from the store since it was free to stay.

Walmart Is Getting Picky About Online Marketplace Sellers 04/10/2018
Walmart Inc.’s online marketplace is getting more choosy.
The retailer’s website -- where third-party vendors sell their own wares -- is adding far fewer sellers a month compared with a year ago, according to data tracker Marketplace Pulse. The site, which Walmart created in 2009 to compete with a similar offering from Amazon.com Inc., now includes about 18,000 sellers.
The slowdown mirrors a deceleration in growth at Walmart’s e-commerce business last quarter, which spooked shareholders and renewed concerns about the investments Walmart is making to catch up with Amazon, such as its recent expansion of grocery home delivery to 100 markets. It also comes amid a whistle-blower lawsuit from a former marketplace executive. He claims he was fired after raising concerns about the company’s “overly aggressive push to show meteoric growth in its e-commerce business by any means possible -- even, illegitimate ones.” Complete article

Employee, customers' racial war of words at Dearborn Mich. Walmart caught on camera 04/10/2018
DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - A heated exchange was caught on camera between two shoppers and an employee at the Dearborn Walmart last Wednesday.
It all started when a woman and her friend used the dressing room after hours. They say they had no clue it was closed.
"She's like, 'What are you doing here?'" one of the shoppers said. "Then I replied to her I am just waiting for my friend, she's in the fitting room. She said where. I showed her what door, which is the first door. She then went and banged on the door."
This woman, who did not want to be identified, says the Walmart employee told her friend to leave the dressing room. Then came the war of words.
"After that she just started dancing and saying Donald Trump, Donald Trump, Donald trump. I am like why would she say Donald Trump, is she trying to tick me off?"
And racial slurs soon followed.

An enormous portion of these articles were released at the local level, often only discussing local renovations, before many if any national articles were posted, which is the opposite of what you might expect.

Walmart and CVS have 15,000 combined stores. Why are both trying to buy health insurance companies? 04/11/2018
The economics of healthcare in America is making for some strange bedfellows. CVS, the behemoth pharmacy chain, plans to buy Aetna, a 22-million member health insurer, for $69 billion. Less than two weeks ago, it became public that Walmart, where one in four Americans shop each week, is considering an acquisition of another insurer, Humana.
Why would these two massive retailers want to buy health insurers? Think millions of customers under one roof buying insurance, visiting health clinics and — importantly — filling prescriptions. These merged insurer-retailers could have lots of price-setting leverage in dealing with pharmaceutical companies and hospitals. But consolidation like this also can threaten competition — and in healthcare markets, that is a demonstrated danger.
To see clearly what’s going on here, it helps to distinguish, as regulators do, between horizontal and vertical mergers. When two competitors in the same business consolidate, that’s a horizontal merger. Hospitals, for instance, have been merging horizontally for decades. There is some evidence that such mergers can improve quality of care, particularly if two small hospitals join forces and become more efficient. But there’s also plenty of data showing that when regional health systems get too big, that can drive up prices. Some believe the reason prices for inpatient hospital care in Southern California are 70 percent lower than in Northern California is because the hospital market down here is very competitive compared with the highly consolidated picture up north. I ordered tea from Amazon, but got a box from Walmart. What happened? 04/13/2018
A few weeks ago, I added some chai tea to my cart on Amazon, clicked the buy button, and didn’t think anything more of it.
That is, until it arrived a couple days later in a Walmart box.
I opened the box, initially not knowing what it was because I don’t usually shop at Walmart. What I found inside was the tea I’d ordered. It didn’t take much detective work to figure out what had happened: I’d ordered the tea from Amazon’s marketplace, where third-parties can sell anything from TVs to detergent. The seller that I’d bought from, named CasGlobal Commerce, accepted my order, then ordered the exact same thing from Walmart for a cheaper price, had it shipped directly to me, and pocketed the money. It’s called “retail arbitrage,” and it’s more common than people think. Complete article
A few weeks ago, I added some chai tea to my cart on Amazon, clicked the buy button, and didn’t think anything more of it.
That is, until it arrived a couple days later in a Walmart box.

Brush fires believed to be intentionally set behind Camdenton Missouri Walmart 04/13/2018
CAMDENTON, Mo. -- Just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the Mid-County Fire Protection District was called out to a fire off of Route 54 and Cross Creek Drive, behind the Camdenton Walmart.
"The fire transferred along here, it went back up into the woods there, and the prevailing winds were out of the south, so it was taking it northward," said Chief Scott Frandsen of the Mid-County Fire Protection District. "We were able to get out into that field, where we actually had some plain grass, we got on that really quick, but then it started topping those trees back there, and that's when we had to get way ahead of it."
Frandsen says they got the fire under control in about an hour and cleared the scene just after 9:15 p.m.
Just over an hour later, they were called to another fire, just down the road from the first one.
"We do not believe that the first fire caused the second fire. It appears we had a second fire intentionally set," Frandsen said. Complete article

Walmart Inc. has nominated McDonald’s Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steve Easterbrook to its board in a bid to bring on an adviser with experience abroad. Easterbrook, a 50-year-old British native, will replace Instagram founder Kevin Systrom, who is departing after four years to prioritize work and other outside commitments, according to a regulatory filing Friday. James Cash, Walmart’s lead independent director, is also retiring from the board after a 12-year tenure. Existing director Thomas Horton, the former head of American Airlines Group Inc., will assume Cash’s role.

At Walmart, the CEO Makes 1,188 Times as Much as the Median Worker 04/20/2018
Walmart Inc. WMT -1.04% paid its median worker $19,177 last year, while Chief Executive Doug McMillon earned $22.8 million, according to a securities filing Friday.
That places the retailer 10th among S&P 500 companies with the widest gap in pay between the CEO and a typical worker, based on an analysis of more than 330 firms that have disclosed the figures so far.
Retailers, which often rely on part-time and seasonal workers to fill their labor force, take four of the top 10 spots on the list of companies with the largest pay gap, including Kohl’s Corp. and Gap Inc. Mr. McMillon earns 1,188 times more than the median employee, according to the filing. ......
Walmart disclosed the pay ratio as part of a broader requirement of the postcrisis Dodd-Frank law that went into effect this year.
Among the 18 retailers that have reported this data so far, Walmart’s median pay falls near the middle. By comparison, Amazon.com Inc.’s median worker earns $28,446, while Gap employees fall at the bottom of the group at $5,375. Complete article

Walmart launches ‘Check Out With Me’ for on-the-spot checkouts in hundreds of US stores 04/20/2018
Walmart announced on Thursday it’s beginning to test new technology that arms store staff with mobile devices for checking out customers from the floor. The devices will first be put into use in Walmart’s “Lawn & Garden Centers” in more than 350 U.S. stores, where there’s the most need for a mobile checkout experience like this.
Before, customers shopping for items like mulch, soil or flowers may have had to go inside the physical store to pay for their Lawn & Garden purchases, which was often challenging due to the size and weight of these items. Now, they’ll be able to pay on the spot with store staff’s help.
The new service, which Walmart is calling “Check Out With Me,” involves store employees wearing a small carrying case equipped with a Bluetooth receipt printer. Their cellular device works as the barcode scanner and the credit card swiper for the transactions. Complete article

Prosecutors: Woman sprayed pepper spray at man using motorized scooter, woman using wheelchair at Wisc. Walmart 04/23/2018
WEST MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee woman is facing charges, accused of using pepper spray in the parking lot of the West Milwaukee Walmart store — spraying it at two people with health concerns — one who was using a wheelchair, and one who was using a motorized scooter.
Desirea Hall, 31, of Milwaukee faces two counts of misdemeanor battery.
According to a criminal complaint, on April 1, police were dispatched to the Walmart store on Greenfield Avenue near Miller Park Way for a complaint regarding an individual using pepper spray.
Police spoke with a witness, who indicated Hall, pregnant, approached the victims in the parking lot, and “starting cursing at” one of the victims for “cutting in front of her.” The witness said she was shopping with her brother, who was one of the victims. Her brother was in a motorized scooter. The witness said Hall “walked off” and got into her car — driving back to where the witness and her brother were. Hall then got out of her car and went to the victim and her brother. At this point, the other victim, who was in a wheelchair, got between Hall and the victim and her brother. Hall then pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the victims in the face, before getting back into her car and driving off. Complete article

Target, Walmart rolling out more electric vehicle charging stations 04/23/2018
Earth Day was Sunday, which means that retailers have once again made a round of announcements touting new sustainability initiatives in the last few days. This year, the big theme has been the rollout of more electric vehicle charging stations.
As car manufacturers look to convince more consumers to buy electric vehicles, one of the major hurdles has been the concern about where they can recharge their cars. So they have been working with mass retailers, given their large presence across the U.S., to build out charging stations in their parking lots.
Target and Walmart are among those who have said in recent days that they will add hundreds of such charging stations to their stores. Complete article

The phrasing of the opening sentence is obviously misleading and biased saying that they should "prepare a report, omitting proprietary information and prepared at reasonable cost demonstrating the company does not have any racial or ethnic pay gaps," drawing conclusions which contradict the preliminary statements already disclosed in this notice. They follow this up by recommending that shareholders vote against this proposal which virtually guarantees that even this biased report won't be written, and any information that might show additional racial disparities will remain "proprietary" or secret.
Notice of 2018 Annual Shareholders' Meeting
Proposal No. 5
Request for Report on Racial or Ethnic Pay Gaps 05/30/2018
RESOLVED: Shareholders request Walmart prepare a report, omitting proprietary information and prepared at reasonable cost demonstrating the company does not have any racial or ethnic pay gaps. For purposes of this Proposal, a racial or ethnic pay gap exists when (i) one or more particular jobs or statuses (e.g., management, part-time work) are disproportionately occupied by persons of a particular racial or ethnic group, compared to the composition of the workforce as a whole; or (ii) persons of one racial or ethnic group are compensated differently from persons of another racial or ethnic group performing the same job under the same job description, with the same experience and level of performance.
Whereas:
Walmart's frontline workforce is diverse. The company's 2017 Global Responsibility Report found that 43 percent of U.S. Associates are people of color. Yet, people of color are underrepresented in higher paying, higher status positions at Walmart: only 31 percent of its U.S. managers and only 21 percent of corporate officers are people of color.
Progress on meeting Walmart's Diversity Goals Program to create "accelerated opportunity to our women and people of color" is aided by the disclosure of the aforementioned statistics. However, Walmart also does not report on race or ethnicity pay gaps. And, while Walmart's hourly workforce is about 50 percent part-time, the company does not report on the whether people of color are concentrated in these typically lower-compensated positions.
While there certainly are part-time workers who prefer part-time work, according to the 2015 U.S. Current Population Survey, black and Latino workers are more likely to be stuck in part-time time jobs when they want full-time work. In fact, the retail, leisure and hospitality industries accounted for 54.3% of the growth of involuntary part-time employment between 2007 and 2015. Nationally, part-time jobs tend to pay less than full-time, are less likely to provide health insurance and paid time off, and frequently involve unpredictable, variable schedules. Complete article

Migrant farm workers detained at Woodsville NH Walmart 04/24/2018
A sense of unease spread throughout the migrant workforce at the Upper Valley’s dairy farms over the weekend, in the wake of the detention of two undocumented dairy farm workers by federal Border Patrol agents on Friday at the Walmart in Woodsville.
The individuals were taken into custody during “routine patrol operations” in Woodsville, according to Brad Brant, the special operations supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, in an emailed statement on Monday.
“On two separate occasions, two individuals were encountered. During a brief consensual encounter, it was determined that neither subject had valid immigration documents which would allow them to stay or remain in the United States,” he wrote.
“The subjects were taken in custody, and ... placed in removal proceedings.”
The two people worked at dairy farms in the Upper Valley, one in Vermont, one in New Hampshire, according to one of their employers. Complete article

Everything You Need to Know About the Romaine Lettuce E. Coli Outbreak 04/24/2018
First things first: If you’re still eating romaine lettuce, stop. The year’s first major outbreak of a foodborne illness started in mid-March, when cases of E. coli infection were linked to romaine. Over the past few weeks, the ongoing outbreak has caused a nationwide panic, as retailers like Costco, Kroger, and Walmart pulled lettuce from their stores, the CDC issued warnings, and the number of documented cases of E. coli infection doubled, then tripled. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s happening.
How widespread is the romaine-lettuce contamination?
As of the CDC’s last reporting, on April 20, there have been 53 documented cases in 16 states, resulting in 31 hospitalizations. The infection has hit people from New Jersey to Alaska, but Tamika Sims, a microbiologist and director of food technology communications at the International Food Information Council, says the number may actually be much higher.
The outbreak is so widespread in part because of “the popularity of [romaine lettuce],” she says, “which also means it’s being produced in massive amounts. Right now we’re talking 16 states, but that’s just what’s been reported. A lot of the time cases of foodborne illness in hospitals don’t get documented, or linked to a specific outbreak, because people don’t remember what they did or didn’t eat. So it’s in 16 states, but it could actually be more.”
Does this mean all brands of romaine lettuce are unsafe?
While investigators haven’t yet determined the exact source of the E. coli contamination, they have linked the contaminated lettuce to the area of Yuma, Arizona. That doesn’t mean the problem is contained, though: the Yuma area produces about 90 percent of all the leafy vegetables — including all the romaine — grown and consumed in the United States between November and March.
Armed Suicide threat at Missouri Walmart ends in hold 04/25/2018
An incident involving a suicidal subject at Bolivar’s Walmart caused Polk County law enforcement to go into high alert in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 22.
Polk County Sheriff Danny Morrison said his office received reports on Saturday, April 21, concerning the well-being of a 28-year-old Polk County man, who said he had plans to hurt himself.
“We never had reports that he had plans to harm anyone else,” Morrison said.
Also on Saturday, he said Walmart received a phone call from one of the man’s relatives, letting the store know he planned to purchase ammunition to use to hurt himself.
When he arrived at the store at around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, “he was denied purchase in the store,” Morrison said.
Nearly an hour later, Morrison said deputies were able to subdue the man without force, removing a Glock pistol from his waistband and transporting him to a local hospital for a 96-hour hold. Complete article

Gulfport police sergeant accused of shoplifting at Fla. Walmart 04/29/2018
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A Gulfport police sergeant is accused of shoplifting at a Walmart in St. Petersburg, police said.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Sergeant Matthew Parks, and his wife, Lindsay, were approached Friday after Walmart reported the couple failed to pay for items in a self-checkout line. The items cost less than $100 in total, according to police.
Parks and his wife avoided arrest because they both have clean records and qualified for the Adult Pre-Arrest Diversion Program, which allows people who commit minor and isolated offenses to avoid arrest and prosecution and the misdemeanor offense will not go on criminal record. Instead, the offenders receive penalties of community service and restitution.
According to their website, Parks has been with the Gulfport Police Department since 2001 and is currently the supervisor of the Alpha Squad. Parks was promoted in 2013 after having served as a patrol officer, detective, and acting sergeant. He is a certified firearms instructor, and has advanced certifications in Homicide and Sex Crimes investigations, as well as Law Enforcement Bicycle Patrol, Crisis Intervention, Counter-terrorism, Document Examination, Domestic Violence Investigation, and Internal Affairs Investigation. Parks is currently responsible for planning and supervising bicycle patrol operations. Complete article

Venezuela Hikes Minimum Wage By 155%--Should McDonald's And Walmart Match It? 04/30/2018
McDonald’s, Walmart, and the Fight for $15 movement here in the US have a long way to go before they match Venezuela President’s “gift” to minimum wage employees.
Today, President Nicolas Maduro announced a 155% hike in the minimum wage. That’s the 13thincrease since Mr. Maduro became President, in case someone keeps record for the sake of history.
The trouble is that Maduro’s hike will do too little to help minimum wage employees catch up with the soaring cost of living.
Inflation in Venezuela is running at 8900%.
That isn’t the case in the US where inflation is running at 2.4%. Complete article
