Wal-Mart Crime report March 2017

Walmart crime is simply not getting any better, although there are now routine reports about police departments speaking out about it, at local levels across the country, but most of them aren’t addressing the root causes of crime.

There were at least four different police departments in four states speaking out about it this month. Some of them claim that Walmart has been helping to solve the problem; however there is little or no discussion about the design of their stores which invites shoplifting, union busting or large numbers of angry customers and workers that are clearly inciting a lot of angry incidents, including at least a couple knife fights this month among employees in two different states, one of which resulted in a death. Over the years Walmart has had over a dozen, perhaps much more, employees go on shooting sprees take hostages or other extreme incidents.

Instead of trying to recognize these root causes and more, and prevent them, Walmart and the criminal justice system focus on punishment after the fact or even a new program that already has problems called Restorative Justice. I have reported on this previously and they’re trying to turn crime into another opportunity to increase profit instead of trying to decrease it in the most effective way possible.

This is part of the effort to privatize the justice system; they charge low level shoplifter in return for not turning them over to police and if they pay on time and take an on line course they can keep their record clear. This has resulted in some intimidation tactics and there have been lawsuits which I reported previously of illegal detention and depriving people of due process.

A report came out about the 19 states where Walmart is the biggest private employer in the state and this report indicates that they have grown the most in some of the states with the highest rates of violence, although it is unlikely that they caused it. Six out of these nineteen states are among the ten states with the highest murder rates; an additional three are close and have been in the top ten sates in the past few years; none are in the bottom ten nor have they been in the past few years, although Wyoming came close consistently. Fourteen out of nineteen of these states are also among the only nineteen states that still allow corporal punishment in schools.

It is unlikely that Walmart directly causes this correlation with high murder rates; however it does take advantage of the authoritarian attitudes in states that still use corporal punishment. It also relies heavily on union busting tactics and other authoritarian methods which almost certainly contributes to these high murder rates and Walmart’s high crime rates, so it probably does indirectly impact both crime at Walmart and murder rates in the states where it does business most.

There is little or no chance that these tactics will result in reducing crime and recent reports already indicate that if anything more serious incidents are probably rising. There was a record breaking surge in shootings during the holiday season with fifteen in November and eighteen in December; this month is down significantly from that with only nine that I found on their property plus two more nearby where the victims, including one police officer drove to Walmart for safety. There was also another shooting at two Walmart stores with a BB gun by a man who had also gone on a hatchet attack at Best Buy before turning himself in.

Two of these shootings were gang related; two of them targeted employees and two of them were suicides which are far more common at Walmart than most people know and they seem to be getting more common. There were also at least half a dozen additional gun related crimes including armed robberies, and attempts to steal guns from Walmart.

There was another dramatic suicide there by someone that drove his truck around a Colorado Walmart before asking people to video tape him while he told them about how he was being harassed by the FBI doused himself with a flammable liquid and set himself on fire. He died the next day from his injuries after being taken to the hospital.

Sure he’s crazy but maybe society should think about ways to avoid pushing crazy people over the edge, perhaps giving them psychological help instead.

Or perhaps it is more important to think only about increasing profits for multinational corporations that donate to political campaigns.

There’s just so much insanity somewhere at Walmart that few people can come close to keeping track of it, including at least fifteen stabbings or attempted stabbings with knives or hatchets including at least one that was stolen from the store by one of the armed robbers that often don’t bring their own weapons; half a dozen or more crashes of some sort including some that were intentional and a couple deaths, probably much more minor fender benders; nine fires mostly if not all arsons, including the suicide mentioned earlier and many more assaults shopliftings and other incidents including at least a two or three kidnapping attempts and a couple thefts from small children.

There were also at least a couple more bodies found at Walmart including one famous chef that got some media attention and another person that was probably homeless and may have been staying in the parking lot for a couple weeks before dying, or perhaps she dies quicker and it just took them a couple weeks to find her decomposing body which has happened before.

I’m not making this up there are enormous amounts of incidents like this but little or no effort to organize the information and figure out how to prevent them. Our economic and political system is based on the best interest of corporation that donate to campaigns and control the propaganda designed to control the government not to address social problems in the most effective way possible.

Other dramatic events include a violent video of a police officer making an arrest, a man who ran through a window after groping a woman, a woman who sprayed chemicals on an employee, someone making terroristic threats, and someone that stole keys from a break room and took an employees car along with at least one or two additional auto thefts, if not more.

Someone pissed on the merchandise again, this time it was dozens of shoes. Walmart claims they threw them out. Maybe they did but they’ve been caught lying so often it’s hard to be sure.

At least two customers claim they got counterfeit money from Walmart at the same store from the same register; they supposedly didn’t know each other.

Don’t take my word for this check the sources.

Walmart is trying to expand it’s services to dominate a growing part of society including getting involved in collecting child support and they’re trying to patents drones for local deliveries within the store, among other things.

What could go wrong? When do any of the things they try do not go wrong? One of the things that continue having problems are the self-check out registers and there was at least one incident this month where they caught some one shoplifting, although they’re probably much more common. Are they spending more money than they save by trying to catch shoplifters take advantage of the self-check outlines? The information needed to find out the answer to that is almost certainly proprietary which means the law is designed to prevent us from knowing unless Walmart decides to tell us. On at least one case they suppressed a report indicating that they could reduce crime with increased security; this was exposed in the documentary “The high cost of low prices.”

A mob also rushed an Arkansas store, no word on why or if it is angry customers although it probably involves teenagers.

Arkansas is one of the states that had a high number of odd animal activities this month at Walmart, where someone was bitten by a Copperhead. They also had pranksters riding horses through the aisle of one store and a deer a turkey and a dead shark all vested other Walmart stores, either in the aisles or in the parking lot.

I told you I didn’t make these things up but don’t trust me check the sources.

These animals probably weren’t involved in the strangest parking job I’ve seen in recent history.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in March 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Man groped women, then ran through Utah Wal-Mart glass door, police say 03/01/2017

MILLCREEK — Unified police are asking the public to help locate a man who they say groped five women recently in a Wal-Mart, and then escaped from a pursuing store employee by jumping through a glass door.

About 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, a woman stepped out of a stall in the women's bathroom at Wal-Mart, 4627 S. 900 East. But as she did that, a man stepped out of the stall next to her and grabbed her arm, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

The woman was able to successfully fight the man off and ran. The man also ran off, but groped four other women as he made his way to the exit, Lohrke said.

A store employee saw what was happening and began chasing the man. The man took a 40-ounce glass bottle of beer and threw it at the employee, Lohrke said. He believes the store also locked all the doors to try and catch him. When the man got to the sliding glass doors at the entrance, he crashed through one and ran off. Complete article

They includes both sparsely populated states without major industries, like Wyoming, and some of the biggest states, like Texas and Illinois.

Over 21,000 Pounds of Pizza Sold at Walmart Is Being Recalled for Possible Listeria 03/16/2017

Over 21,000 pounds of a popular pizza sold at Walmart is being recalled for possible listeria.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Wednesday that the Marketside Extra Large Supreme 16-inch pizza, produced by RBR Meat company, is being recalled after the manufacturer conducted a routine sampling and concluded that the pizza may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Currently, there haven't been any reported cases of the illness.

The recalled pizzas were produced on Feb. 23. They are shrink-wrapped, and found inside a 50.6 ounce box that's labeled as “Marketside Extra Large Supreme Pizza." The lot code is 20547. According to the USDA, they were shipped to retail distribution centers in California, Nevada, Utah, and Washington.

Symptoms of listeria include muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are especially at risk—according to the USDA, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, and life-threatening infections for a baby. Those who are older or have a weakened immune system are also highly susceptible. Complete article

Drones May One Day Buzz Inside a Walmart Near You 03/17/2017

Walmart may use drones like in-store messenger pigeons.

The retail giant was granted a patent this week for a system in which drones would shuttle products between different departments inside its stores. The idea is to free customers from having to walk across its super-sized emporiums to find what they want and from having to wait while employees return from far-away storerooms.

Ultimately, Walmart believes that drones “can greatly improve the customer experience without overburdening the human associates of the facility.” Waiting, the filing said, “can contribute to reduced customer satisfaction.”

The drones would mostly avoid buzzing above customers' heads by being routed over shelves instead of store aisles, according to the patent filing. But the filing did leave the door open to humans and flying delivery assistants crossing paths. Complete article

Woman Accused Of Stealing Items, Employee’s Car From Blaine Minn. Walmart 03/22/2017

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 22-year-old woman is accused of stealing several items from a Blaine Walmart and stealing an employee’s car from the parking lot, according to charges filed in Anoka County Court.

Rachael Howard Robinson is charged with theft of a motor vehicle and theft (motor vehicle use without consent) in connection with the incident, which happened Feb. 27.

According to the charges, Blaine police were called to the Walmart at 11505 Ulysses Street on a report of a theft. When officers arrived, two employees told them they had items stolen from them in the break room. One employee said her cardholder with her driver’s license, credit card, $40 cash, a gift card and her car keys was stolen. Someone tried to use her credit card, but wasn’t successful.

The other employee told police her keys were stolen and then used to steal her car from the parking lot. Her vehicle was recovered later in the day in Minneapolis. The complaint states store employees looked at surveillance video and recognized Robinson by a tattoo on her upper left breast. She had pushed a load of merchandise outside the store and was looking for her ride. She couldn’t find it, and pushed the stolen merchandise back into the vestibule.

According to the complaint, Robinson went back inside the store and took an employee uniform off the wall, put it on and went into the break room, where she stole property from the two female employees. Robinson is then seen going to the parking lot and stealing one of the employee’s cars. Complete article

Walmart Is Still Being Banned From One of the World's Biggest Cities, But Oddly Target Isn't 03/21/2017

The world's largest retailer still gets no love from New York City, not from the mayor, the unions or some consumers.

New York City is brimming with big box stores, Target (TGT) , Sears' (SHLD) Kmart and Best Buy (BBY) , to name a few. But Walmart (WMT) , the world's biggest retailer, still can't get traction in New York City, which is welcoming its third Target store to Manhattan this October.

Seemingly, there's no love for Walmart in the Big Apple: Mayor Bill De Blasio, the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW), the union covering grocery workers, and some local residents continue to oppose having a Walmart in their neighborhoods.

"Walmart, Target and Kmart all have the same basic [business] model. Historically, there have been differences around the edges—primarily in marketing and branding," said Michael J. Berne, president of MJB Consulting. Complete article

Minn. Brooklyn Center Walmart Launches Partnership with Police to Prevent Crime Around Store 03/25/2017

The Brooklyn Center Police Department is starting a new partnership with Walmart this week to help keep residents safe.

It's part of a statewide and national campaign to try to curb crime in and near Walmart stores.

The Brooklyn Center Walmart has been open for about two years, but in that time, police have noticed a disturbing trend.

"We have had significant violent crimes and assaults occur on the property," Brooklyn Center Police Cdr. Rick Gabler said. In fact, police responded to roughly 1,000 calls for service at this store last year.

"When you compare that to Sears, which is adjacent to the Walmart and Target, it's about nine to 10 times higher," Gabler said.

Just last fall, a man was shot outside the store in the middle of the day. Complete article

WEST JEFFERSON-Two local residents will no longer be able to “save money and live better” following recent decisions in Ashe County District Court that placed lifetime bans on the shoplifters from Walmart.

Although both cases appeared on the same court docket, court records did not indicate that the cases were related.

Tiffany Louise Bare was sentenced to 45 days in the Ashe County Jail for misdemeanor larceny. This sentence was suspended for 12 months of supervised probation. As long as she abides by the terms of her probation, she will avoid the 45 day jail sentence. Bare was also ordered to pay $100.20 in restitution to Walmart in addition to the ban.

In a separate case, Johnathan Rob Triplett, was sentenced to 45 days in jail, suspended for 12 months of supervised probation for committing misdemeanor larceny at the West Jefferson retailer. He was ordered to pay $1,658 in restitution. Triplett is also forbidden from ever shopping at the county’s lone super center. The state took a dismissal on the larceny by defeating an anti theft device and felony larceny charges.

Another person, Melissa Weaver, was ordered by the court to stay away from the store for six months. She received a prayer for judgment for a charge of felonious obtaining property by false pretense. According to avvo.com, a PJC essentially allows a defendant to plead guilty to a crime without having the plea entered against them. She was also ordered to pay $71.13 in restitution. Man burns to death after setting himself on fire in Colorado Walmart parking lot [VIDEO] 03/28/2017

Shoppers at a Colorado Walmart witnessed a horrific scene as a man doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire, after driving around the parking lot telling people to watch and record him.

According to Fox 31 Denver, a still-unidentified man appearing to be about 60 years old drove to the Lafayette Walmart in a beige Toyota Corolla on Sunday. He reportedly got the attention of a number of people in the parking lot, telling them to keep watching him. He explained that he planned to self-immolate because of harassment from the FBI.

“I got in trouble 11 years ago, and ever since (the FBI has) been completely harassing me,” the man told an onlooker, according to video footage of the incident obtained by the Lafayette News. “They never let me sleep. All I’m doing is trying to make ends meet and all they’re trying to do is (expletive) with me.”

Then he stopped near the Walmart store entrance, poured gasoline on himself, and set himself on fire while still in the vehicle.

Horrified onlookers tried to intervene, but the man reportedly said not to put out the fire. Eventually bystanders were able to put out the flames on his body by covering him with multiple jackets, while the car continued to burn.

But his injuries were too severe. According to Fox 31 Denver, the man was airlifted to a nearby hospital with second- and third-degree burns, and died on Monday afternoon. Complete article

Wal-Mart Has a Unique Way to Cut Down on Shoplifting 03/28/2017

Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) has taken the law into its own hands. No, the company has not started its own jail, and any employee who wears a cape and fights crime must still do so on their own time. Instead, the retail chain has taken a new approach to fighting shoplifting that requires less involvement from the police. The retailer has been using a "restorative justice" program in 1,500 of its stores, according to The Gainesville Sun. That's a program where people deemed low-risk, first-time offenders are given the choice of paying to take an anti-shoplifting course rather than facing arrest and prosecution.

The effort is in its early days, but the results have been good so far. The company has seen a 35% reduction in calls to law enforcement nationwide since restorative justice programs were first implemented, Wal-Mart spokesman Ragan Dickens told The Sun in an email.

"No retailer is immune to the challenge of crime. We recognize the importance of this issue at the highest levels of the company, and we are investing in people and technology to support our stores," he wrote, noting that police are not being cut out of the loop.

Alleged shoplifters who get the chance to participate in the course must pay a fee to take it. The company does not disclose what it charges, but the paper noted that "the rate of repeat theft is low among those who have gone through the program." If that proves to be true over a national rollout for the long run, then the company could save some serious money. Complete article
