Wal-Mart Crime report October 2015

There were more than half a dozen if not at least a dozen gun related crimes at Walmart this month, including one where an armed robber was spotted by a 73-year-old woman who decided to pull her own gun after she lost track of him and went looking for him. At least three of the incidents involved shots fired including one police shooting where the suspect was wounded after he fired the first shots. There were also at least three armed robberies including one carjacking and another where the perpetrators followed someone from Walmart where they saw her conduct a money transaction.

Another report about how the majority of police calls in a Florida town are to Walmart came out. By now this is common knowledge to many police departments but they're only reported briefly to the majority of the public as if it is only one town here and there having this problem. There was also at least one other Walmart worker slashed during a robbery. Reports of these incidents are routine as well, although they're reported as isolated incidents.

Someone bought a gas can at Walmart then filled it up and set himself on fire in their parking lot; there have been at least two similar incidents in the last six years. Another person set fire to the Halloween aisle; another employee got in trouble for filming a fight at Walmart; and one Walmart had a hilarious video of man finding 'gun oil' lube at gun counter. And one shoplifting suspect somehow managed to steal the police cruiser while being arrested.

That police department might be reviewing procedures to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I don't know whether the police officer that let this happened want to talk about it.

Walmart seems to be having more than their share of internal problems this month. some of which are related to their declining profits, or typical business practices, which they're reluctant to change. Previously, Tracy Morgan claimed that Walmart treated him well in his settlement and according to one alleged leak he may have received got $90 million although it was a confidential settlement. It appears as if he almost certainly got much more than most ordinary citizens would receive in a settlement, presumably for public relations purposes. However the insurance agent doesn't want to provide such a generous settlement. Walmart apparently isn't too happy with that.

Blue Bell which had previously pulled its products from Walmart shelves and many other locations has been exposed for having unsanitary conditions. No one has done more to squeeze suppliers than Walmart, yet even though this has been exposed this month they're trying to squeeze other suppliers even more to cover for lost profits. These are , as usual reported as separate and unrelated stories, but it isn't hard to figure out the potential connection. If Walmart and other oligarchies keeps squeezing their suppliers, workers and even consumers it's bound to create a lot of problems.

Now they want to start using drones for their deliveries.

What could go wrong?

Walmart also got caught in another deceptive advertising campaign about made in the USA products. This must have been at least the tenth or more, perhaps much more time they've been caught at that one.

How could anyone believe any of their claims anymore?

One of their suppliers has pulled out as a result of the pressure from Walmart; and another analyst seems to think they've become to big to handle, adding to the list of people that came to the conclusion that they're past their peak.

Walmart and some other fast food chains are trying to improve their image by offering free GED programs for their employees; however many people familiar with corporate attempts to privatize the education system might be highly skeptical of this. There are numerous books including many by Jonathan Kozol or Diane Ravitch that raise major doubts about whether the "school reform" movement is doing more to fix the system or make it much worse.

Someone used a Jimmy Dean sausage to do what?

When ever I hear about shoplifters getting caught putting meat in their pants or even stranger thigns I can't help but wonder if they put it back on the shelf after they retrieve it.

No

Even Walmart wouldn't do that in this case.

Would they?

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. For regular updates about events at Walmart through the month see Walmart Watch on twitter or check the Wal-Mart Wall; they have helped compile some of this information. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2015. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Walmart rips its insurers for not paying up in Tracy Morgan settlement 10/06/2015

Walmart has made good with comedian Tracy Morgan over the June 2014 traffic collision involving one of its drivers that left Morgan seriously injured. Making good with its insurance companies, on the other hand, is a different matter.

The retail giant has filed a lawsuit against a number of insurance companies including Liberty Insurance Underwriters, the Ohio Casualty Insurance Company and QBE Insurance Corporation, claiming that the companies haven’t paid their portion of the settlements made as a result of the crash, Courthouse News Service reports.

“Some of Walmart’s insurance companies have met their obligations under the insurance policies they sold and compensated Walmart for a portion of the settlement amounts,” the complaint reads. “Other of Walmart’s insurance companies, the defendants here, have in bad faith refused to consent to these settlements and have refused to pay their portions of the settlement under the insurance policies that they sold.” Complete article

Port Richey Fla. Walmart crimes dominate police calls 10/06/2015

The calls are split -- Port Richey police spending half of their time responding to crimes at Walmart, and the other half going to check out other problems in other parts of the city.

"We see people running from the parking lot we see fights in the parking lot," said Elani Mossor, who lives and works near the Port Richey Walmart and says she sees police officers here all the time.

"Walmart doesn't have any type of security, any type of protection," Mossor said. The Port Richey Police Department began looking at the crime statistics related to Walmart and found the retail giant was taking up 63% of the reportable retail thefts.

"Walmart -- it's a drain on the community. It's a financial impact to the public safety budget and to the police department," said Capt. Bill Ferguson of the Port Richey Police Department.

The department says it typically has three officers on duty -- and on Tuesday one called in sick leaving two on duty -- so if there's a call to the Walmart that leaves one officer to patrol the entire city. And police say that leaves residents and officers at risk. .....

The police department wants Walmart to go one step further and hire its own off-duty police officer. Complete article

Blue Bell workers detail unsanitary conditions inside plant 10/12/2015

BRENHAM, Texas -- For the first time, former Blue Bell Ice Cream workers are claiming management ignored their complaints about conditions at their factory in Texas that was linked to an outbreak of listeria.

During the outbreak, 10 people became sick and three died. The company recalled 8 million gallons of ice cream. Before this, Blue Bell was the number three brand in the country and was sold in 23 states.

In the early morning hours of August 29, a single truck left Blue Bell Creameries of Brenham, Texas, marking the return of its ice cream. .....

For the seven months leading up to the shutdown, Schultz operated a machine at the Brenham Blue Bell factory.

"A lot of times when I walked in there was just ice cream all over the floor," Schultz explained. "Sometimes the machines would just go haywire, the product would just continually run through the conveyor belt and just drop right onto the floor."

Schultz said stopping to clean the ice cream would slow down production, so workers left it pooling on the floor, creating an environment where bacteria could flourish. When Schultz complained to supervisors he said nothing was done.

"The response I got at one point was, is that all you're going to do is come here and bitch every afternoon?" recalled Schultz. Complete article

Wilkes-Barre Township--A gunman who was randomly firing a semi-automatic rifle in the parking lot of a northeastern Pennsylvania shopping center in the middle of the day Saturday provoked a shootout with police that left him with two bullet wounds, but did not harm anyone else, state police said.

State police Capt. James Degnan said police responded at around 12:30 p.m. to multiple 911 calls about the gunfire, which struck some vehicles. The man shot at local police when they arrived and they returned the fire. Multiple rounds were exchanged, he said.

The suspect, who Degnan said was not carrying identification and whose identity had not yet been confirmed, was wounded in the abdomen and thigh. He was undergoing surgery at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre as of late afternoon.

A woman who was with the suspect was being questioned by state police in an attempt to learn more about what prompted the shooting rampage. Degnan said he was unsure whether she is related to the man, but that police do not consider her a suspect. Complete article

CHICAGO • Suppliers of everything from groceries to sports equipment are already being squeezed for price cuts and cost sharing by Wal-Mart Stores. Now they are bracing for the pressure to ratchet up even more after a shock earnings warning from the retailer last week.

The discount store behemoth has always had a reputation for demanding lower prices from vendors but Reuters has learned from interviews with suppliers and consultants, as well as reviewing some contracts, that even by its standards Wal-Mart has been turning up the heat on them this year.

Walmart Criticized For Blaming Lower Profits On Increased Wages 10/20/2015

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is under fire after lowering its profit expectations last week and attributing much of its gloomier financial outlook to wage hikes for its workers.

An ongoing campaign, Making Change at Walmart (MCAW), backed by the United Food & Commercial Workers union, says the company’s explanation for its slumping profits is “just a fairy tale.”

“It is not fair to blame the wage increases for the myriad of other problems Walmart has right now,” Jess Levin, a spokesperson for MCAW told Footwear News. “The amount of investment Walmart claims to have put toward compensation, when put in context, is not impressive. It is a fraction of what they make annually in sales. If they had moved the needle at all on sales, they wouldn’t be having the problems they are having now.” Complete article

Woman Arrested For Masturbating With Jimmy Dean Sausage In Louisiana Walmart Bathroom 10/22/2015

Police are calling this a crime of the unthinkable, something that most people would never imagine doing. On Monday, police were called to a Louisiana Walmart under the suspicion that a customer was shoplifting food. According to the complaint, a Walmart worker radioed security about a suspicious woman in the meat aisle. Security cameras filmed 33-year-old Shaniqua Johnson shoving sausages under her shirt. CCTV footage then shows the woman walking to the bathroom, where she remained for at least 30 minutes.

The male security guard says he knocked on the bathroom door several times but the woman did not respond. He then announced he was entering. What he found behind the door of the unlocked stall is something he said will “haunt his dreams forever.” The security guard reports when he entered the stall, Johnson was inappropriately pleasing herself with a Jimmy Dean package of sausage. He said that when he entered “She didn’t even stop. She just stared at me and kept going.”

Shocked, and also frightened for his safety due to the fact that Johnson is a “big girl,” the 140 pound security guard said he ran out until police arrived. When they did, female officers entered the restroom with Johnson still “putting in work with the sausage.” All in all, it took 7 police officers to restrain Johnson and pry the victimized sausage out of the woman’s hands. She was arrested and taken into custody where she was charged with shoplifting, indecent exposure, and resisting arrest. Complete article

Gunman abducts Uber driver from Midlothian Va. Walmart 10/26/2015

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield police are searching for a man who they say abducted and robbed an Uber driver on Sunday.

Police say the driver, who was a woman, picked the man up at the Walmart on the 900 block of Walmart Way in Midlothian at around 7:45 p.m. The man then asked her to stop by the Union Bank in the 13700 block of Midlothian Turnpike. Police say the man displayed a firearm and forced the driver into the back of the trunk when they arrived at the bank.

The suspect then drove the car, a silver/blue 2012 Hyundai Accent hatchback, away from the bank. Police say he drove to several places and demanded money from the woman. Walmart, fast-food chains offer employees free GED program 10/30/2015

Some of the country’s major retailers and fast-food restaurants are offering employees free GED preparation and testing starting this year, tapping into a potentially large market of adults who lack a high school diploma and could greatly benefit from higher education.

The partnership with GED Testing Service includes Walmart, KFC, Taco Bell and Southeastern Grocers, which operates BI-LO, Harveys and Winn-Dixie stores.

The program is free for test-takers. The cost, about $300 per GED candidate, is funded, in most cases, by the employer. It includes online study materials, practice tests, and access to an adviser whose job it is to check in with candidates and keep them motivated and engaged in what can be a lengthy process to study for and pass the tests.
