Walmart Crime Report May 2025

Walmart had at least nine more shootings in May of 2025, with at least four deaths from these shootings, two of those were officer involved shootings where suspects were killed, one was a suicide, the other one is being prosecuted as a murder, there were at least three more injuries, one of them a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect, another one a suspect shot, but not killed in an officer involved shooting, and the third was a man who accidentally shot himself. There were also two more shootings nearby or with a minor conection to Walmart, one, which was also fatal at an apartment complex across the street, the other involving a stolen car that was later spotted at Walmart before the first of two chases began, with the shooting happening at the end of the second chase which ended in a crash.

There were also two more bodies found on their premises, bringing the total dead for the month to six, which is lower than usual. One of those bodies was found in a vehicle that was actually towed the previous month, but they didn't realize what was in the back seat until they could smell the body decomposing, which has happened quite a few times, although this is the first I know of where it wasn't discovered until a month after a vehicle was towed.

There were at least fifteen other gun related crimes without firing shots, probably more, since they're less consistent about reporting them, and probably missed some. Several of these were robberies, as usual, arguments over parking spaces, domestic arguments, or other crimes where suspects were armed, although they may not have pulled a gun or threatened to use one.

A Mississippi African American mother was assaulted by a police officer because she parked in a handicapped spot with a handicapped placard, which was issued for the benefit of her mother who was in the store while this happened. The police also complained that her children weren't secured in their car seats, while parked. This was all caught on video, and there doesn't appear to be any reason for any of it, excepts possible facial discrimination, and it's virtually guaranteed this will result in a lawsuit, a public relations disaster, and possibly a settlement at taxpayer expense, but it's very rare for police to be charged for something like this, and the Police Department initially came to the defense of the officer looking for excuses, without providing any credible ones.

It wasn't long before this when an Indian immigrant in Georgia was accused of attempted kidnapping, even though it was all on video-tape, and there's little or no chance the accusation was legitimate, the mother that made it didn't complain immediately after the incident, and the video shows both the mother and the suspect going about their business as if nothing had happened. Last month his lawyer reported that the mother had made false accusations before, but they still haven't dropped charges, although they agreed to release him on bail. But there was another report of an unrelated kidnapping at different Walmart in SC last month which appears to be real.

There was another cop stealing food or other goods while in uniform who was fired within days, as always happens if they get caught on camera stealing from the rich, which happens about half a dozen or so times per year. There was also a former Public Safety Commissioner that plead not guilty to shoplifting, but, in this case, she was no longer employed at this job when it happened. However, when police get caught red-handed committing much worse crimes police departments and police unions often fight tooth and nail to avoid accountability, sometimes even in extremely obvious cases, and sometimes successfully, although this is less likely when there's enough pressure from the public like the case of Derek Chauvin, and there's even discussion of a possible pardon for him from Trump, but supposedly that would only apply to federal conviction. Other abusive police have been pardoned, including Joe Arpaio who was pardoned by Trump and a cop in Missouri that was convicted for murder but pardoned by the governor not too long ago, the same governor refused to stop an execution for a black man when there was evidence showing he was almost certainly guilty. These are just a couple I remember off the top of my head and there're almost certainly many more. This adds to evidence showing there's one law for the rich, including police that defend a rigged system, and another law for the rest of us!

A man was hit in the head multiple times with a baseball bat, a woman was violently tackled by police officers for what they called a "disturbance," but there was no explanation about what would justify this violent assault, and a Walmart employee stood by watching trying to keep customers away. There was also another major "incident" which involved a large police presence, but no details about why. This is becoming increasingly common and there may have been at least one or two other similar incidence, without quite as large a police presence last month. This implies that either they're not reporting major unknown threats, whether they're shootings, assaults or something else, or they're over reacting to panics; and it's not an isolated incident, but one that keeps happening in multiple stores.

Two police officers and a Walmart employee were arrested following a fight in the store, which is rare, implying the evidence against the cops is probably stronger than usual; there were also other attacks against at least one cops and several co-workers in one store, and against two more unrelated cops in another store.

At least two homeless people, at least one with mental health issues, and one child with mental health issues were arrested at stores for various crimes, one for petty theft, another for making terroristic threats, and the child for starting a fire. We have many studies of various kinds that show that it's much less expensive to house the homeless and treat mental health issues before they escalate to dangerous situations, including a "Housing First" program in Finland, which was an enormous success. The most religious states in the Bible belt are the least likely to address these problems, so it's not surprising that all three of these incidents are in Southern Bible Belt states. In the case of the child charged with arson both the prosecutor and defense agreed that he had mental health issues that need to be addressed, yet they allowed him to plead guilty the next day, which is almost unheard of and should raise major red flag.

Another local police department disclosed that they get ten calls per week to Walmart, which according to many studies, some mentioned below, has far worse crime than any other store. This is far from the first police department to make these claims, they surged in 2016 after a Bloomberg report and a large volume of these reports kept coming for several years before slowing down, but they continue to report these problems on a regular basis, whether it's better or worse, which is hard to tell without reliable reporting which may be influenced by Walmart according to several stories.

Wlamart gift cards are still being tampered with according to one recent report even though they've tried a couple tactics to stop them, and another story says they're trying to make it harder to hide skimmers, although it's too soon to tell if it works, past prevention tactics certainly haven't worked

Another person was arrested for recording women in the bathrooms, this time it wasn't an employee, who often have easier access. They had another relatively minor theft incident; but what makes this so strange is that they went to an enormous expense to investigate such a minor theft. This isn't unprecedented; there were at least two previous cases where helicopters of K-9 units were called in to catch minor thieves, and one incident where they went through a long expensive trial to charge a legally blind man with skip-scanning eventually convicting him; but tax payers paid much more for the investigation than the amount stolen or restitution.

There were also at least fifteen or so major crashes, chases, hit and runs, and other automobile crimes, including at least four car fires, one following a crash, and another where a man was unresponsive in the burning car and saved by employees who pulled him out and treated him.

There were also at least four more fires, including the one started by a teenager with mental heal issues that plead guilty the next day; they're investigating whether the other ones are also arson or not. There were also at least four knife attacks including at least two stabbings, one major and another involving a robbery.

Walmart had another five more recalls, including portable chargers, pressure cookers causing burns, bed rails, food causing Listeria and cucumbers with Salmonella contamination. They also had another measles scare.

Walmart is being exposed in numerous scams including one shopper calling out false weights on their stakes, which is common, another with unjustified charged from Walmart on his bank account, another person that called staff nine times about an issue that wasn't resolved until it drew media attention, and they lost a court case for $222,700,000.

Walmart is also being sued by a woman who was attacked by an employee over a $1.06 slushie, which was presumably all caught on tape, but there's no rational explanation why. Another customer rejected a $75 thousand settlement and is seeking $2 million for a slip and fall case, which means Walmart will probably spend more than $75 thousand for defense, whether they win or not, but it's unlikely, judging by past cases, that he'll collect $2 million. Most cases against Walmart are dropped, not necesarily based on merit, but because of their high legal funds available to fight them and political connections, possibly including a lawsuit by the CFPD that was dropped last month.

What kind of "bodily fluids" do you think a man sprayed on women at NC Walmarts? sorry to say he's not the first one to do this.

If you want to hear someone tell the truth about Walmart do you need a "Punk Walmart Greeter" from a satirical web page? In some cases this might be True.

How often do you see snakes when you get out of your car at Walmart? If your a decent person you will of course step over them and let them go on their way, since they're harmless.

Have you ever tried to avoid a shoplifting arrest by swimming through a pond? If so, hopefully you'll be more successful than one couple in Florida.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in May 2025. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

GIFT CARD SCAM: Man arrested for planting tampered cards at Cape Coral Fla. Walmart 05/01/2025

Police say the man placed over 50 hacked cards and had 200 more in his car.

CAPE CORAL, Fla — The Cape Coral Police Department said a Miami Gardens man drove to Cape Coral to run a gift card scam. Police say they caught him outside the Walmart on Del Prado Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

Cape Coral Police say a Walmart loss prevention officer monitoring surveillance cameras saw 25-year-old Sebastian Garcia Gallego slip tampered gift cards onto a rack, then leave the store.

Police said this is a common scam - a card’s info and PIN are stolen, then the card is placed in a store.

“What happens is people will then buy these gift cards. They’ll take them and when they go to spend the money that money is then given to the scammer instead of being used for the purposes it’s needed to be used for, and the person is out of the money,” said Lisa Greenberg, Cape Coral Police Department public affairs officer. Man charged with burglary after theft of Wyoming Walmart master keys 05/05/2025

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Cheyenne man has been charged with burglary following the reported theft of master keys from Walmart.

Tyler L. Holcomb, 31, was arrested after police investigated the incident at the Walmart at 2032 Dell Range Blvd. in Cheyenne.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Detective Marino with the Cheyenne Police Department was contacted by Walmart’s Asset Protection Team on April 30 regarding a man who unlawfully entered the store and stole items. The man was identified as Holcomb.

Walmart reported that on April 30 at about 8:12 a.m., Holcomb entered the store and stole a set of Walmart manager’s master keys. The keys, which were on a pink carabiner on a shopping cart, reportedly provided access to the main store and all departments within the store. Walmart told police that due to the theft of the master set, the estimated cost to rekey the entire store was roughly $25,000.

Walmart also provided investigators with photographs and video footage of the theft, as well as a trespass form issued to and signed by Holcomb on July 11, 2024. The form stated Holcomb was prohibited from entering Walmart property due to prior conduct and that violating the notice could result in criminal trespass charges. Holcomb signed an acknowledgment stating he understood he was restricted from entering Walmart property. Complete article

Hilton Head, Bluffton SC Walmart stores call police 10 times a week. What’s the top reason? 05/09/2025

Walmart shoppers hunting for the lowest prices on eggs and children’s shoes might not realize there’s a hidden cost not included in the price tag: the taxpayer dollars.

Taxpayers in Beaufort County pay for the safety of some of Walmart’s shoppers through the stores’ frequent reliance on local law enforcement to deal with low level crimes and disturbances.

Walmart stores in Hilton Head and Bluffton call county law enforcement on average of 10 times per week, most commonly to request extra patrols to deter crime.

The two local big box stores accounted for 564 calls for service to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office over a 12-month period. Extra patrol requests accounted for 126 calls, or twice per week on average.

The frequent extra patrols raise questions of whether local Walmart stores are relying on local law enforcement to save on security expenses on the taxpayer’s dime.

However, they’re not the only ones benefiting from the service. County police responded to nearly 25,000 requests for extra patrols at local businesses in the same time period. Residents and neighborhoods can also request extra patrol to deter crime via an online form.

A 2019 analysis by The State newspaper found that police in Columbia responded to calls to Walmart on average of nine times per day.

Top reasons for calls to Walmart

The Bluffton Walmart, located at 4 Bluffton Road, made 327 calls for service to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s office between May 1, 2024 and April 30 of this year. That’s nearly one call per day. Complete article

Walmart denies tariffs caused reinstatement of 'basket fee' 05/09/2025

The mega-retailer is bringing back a $6.99 charge on certain online orders.

In the tariff era, minor price fluctuations can be big news, and many people are quick to blame any price increase on tariffs. Just last night, Mashable fact-checked a false alarm about Microsoft raising some Surface laptop prices. Now, it's Walmart's turn.

On April 30, Reuters reported that Walmart had reinstated a $6.99 fee for online grocery delivery and pickup orders under $35 for shoppers in the Walmart+ Assist program. That program lets shoppers who use food stamps, EBT cards, or Medicaid sign up for Walmart+ — a membership that offers various benefits like free pharmacy delivery and discounted gasoline purchases — at a 50 percent reduced price ($49 annually compared to the regular $98). During the COVID crisis, Walmart took away the basket fee on small orders made by Walmart+ Assist members, but the charge was reinstated sometime in April.

Enter The Daily Mail, which reported that "new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump" were to blame for the change. If Walmart was passing along tariff costs to low-income shoppers, that would certainly be an unusual public relations screwup. However, the company says that's absolutely not the case. Delaware State Police Detectives Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Townsend 05/10/2025

Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle that occurred in Townsend last night.

On May 9, 2025, at approximately 9:15 p.m., troopers responded to Dupont Highway in Camden for a report of a stolen white Infiniti QX6 traveling in the area. A trooper located the Infiniti at Walmart, located at 263 Walmart Drive in Camden, and a computer check confirmed the vehicle was stolen within the jurisdiction of New Castle County Police earlier this month. The trooper initiated a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop. In the ensuing pursuit, the Infiniti traveled at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner on Dupont Highway in Dover, but the pursuit was ultimately terminated out of concern for the safety of pedestrians and other motorists. A short time later, a trooper saw the Infiniti traveling northbound on Dupont Highway near the Dover Mall and attempted to pull it over. The driver once again disregarded the police signal, and a second pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the Infiniti exited Dupont Highway and traveled northbound on Route 1 as it continued traveling at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner. The Infiniti then exited Route 1 and entered the city limits of Smyrna, where it collided with another vehicle. After the collision the Infiniti did not stop, and continued northbound on Dupont Highway, until it eventually came to a stop north of Fieldsboro Road after becoming disabled.

The preliminary investigation revealed that after the Infiniti came to a stop, the driver and 3 passengers began fleeing on foot from the stolen vehicle as a trooper was approaching them. While approaching the Infiniti, the trooper observed the black male driver drop a firearm in the roadway as he exited the Infiniti. The driver picked up the firearm and fled on foot towards a tree line with the firearm in his hand. During the foot chase with the suspect, the trooper gave verbal commands for the suspect to stop and drop the weapon, but the suspect did not comply. Subsequently, the trooper discharged his divisionally issued handgun, striking the suspect.

Troopers rendered first aid until emergency medical services arrived. The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Dover, Delaware, was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. Complete article

A Florida man found a mysterious $528 charge on his bank account from Walmart — here’s how he discovered the fraud and how you can spot the red flags 05/10/2025

When reporter Nicholas Brooks got a mobile alert on his phone, he was surprised to see that it was a $528.04 charge to his bank account from Walmart. Brooks hadn't bought anything at Walmart, but he quickly noticed the pending charge when he navigated to his Walmart account.

Brooks, who works for WJAX-TV in Jacksonville, Florida, immediately called his bank to report the unauthorized charge and request a replacement debit card.

Unfortunately, Brooks isn’t the only one who had this issue, but he made a few smart moves in response, including swiftly notifying his bank about the fraudulent charge. His best form of protection, though, was the mobile alert that immediately notified him of the problem.

Brooks' story serves as a cautionary tale on how to protect your accounts from hackers and scammers. Here's how it all went down, along with some tips on how to keep your bank accounts safe from fraudulent charges.

Walmart's technology causing problems for users

Walmart uses an app called Spark Driver to arrange deliveries for customers directly from the store. When customers place an online order, drivers working for Spark Driver are notified that a pending delivery request is available and can decide if they want to take the job.

Brooks wasn't the only Spark Driver user to experience problems, as several others — including a delivery driver named Sherry Medellin — said their Spark accounts had also been hacked. Complete article

Alice Walton's stake in Walmart has been key in her rise to the centibillionaire club, a select group to which only 15 people in the world belong. Complete article

Punk Walmart Greeter More of a Deterrent 05/09/2025 The historic satire site was founded in December 1976.

RICHFIELD, Minn. — Foot traffic at a local Walmart store has dropped off significantly after one of its greeters, unapologetic punk Steve McKenzie, has turned out to be more of a deterrent than a welcoming presence, confirmed sources.

“I came with my family yesterday when we were immediately accosted by some vagrant who began making pig noises at us and made a condescending comment to my son about coming to buy, as he put, ‘probably some shitty major label vinyl garbage.’ But then I saw his name tag and thought, ‘This is who Walmart is hiring these days?’” said Daniel Wallace. “I thought greeters were supposed to be old retired veterans, not crusties who look like they dumpster dive out back on their lunch breaks. We ended up leaving after he wouldn’t let us in without paying a $5 cover fee or giving him drugs. I’ve been treated better at Dollar General!”

Despite numerous complaints, McKenzie saw no issues with his job performance.

“I guess I’m supposed to greet people with a smile or whatever bullshit was in the job description, but do you see any of my coworkers providing good customer service having to cater to morons all day? If people don’t want to shop here because of me, it’s because they were never welcome in the first place,” said McKenzie. “I run the front the same as the house show doors I work: keeping out poseurs, jocks, and rednecks. My manager pulled me the other day and said the spikes and patches on my work vest are intimidating shoppers. Good, they should be afraid of me.”

Walmart’s Midwest district manager resigned to the fact that store greeters are almost always wildcards.

“The truth is, the position is for employees that can’t really do anything or would do more harm than good if given any real responsibility. But 98% of the complaints we receive are related to greeters acting like security but without preventing any shoplifting, or trying to hand out copies of their band’s EP to everyone. It’s killing our sales more than inflation,” said Roger Baker. “Despite Mr. McKenzie’s numerous write-ups, we’re stuck with him until we can find someone desperate enough for the job who also won’t pull knives on cops.”

As of press time, McKenzie was put on a final warning after several physical altercations with customers wearing MAGA hats, who make up 70% of the store’s clientele. Complete article

Jury Hits Walmart Harder in Trade Secrets Retrial, Awards $222.7M to Zest Labs 05/14/2025

The retrial of a trade secrets case against Walmart Inc. resulted in a worse outcome for the Bentonville retailer as a Little Rock federal jury on Tuesday awarded a California technology company $222.7 million — more than twice the amount a different jury awarded it in 2021.

The jury awarded Zest Labs Inc. of San Jose, California, $72.7 million in compensatory damages and $150 million for punitive damages, making it one of the largest jury verdicts awarded in federal court in Arkansas.

The amount was more than Zest requested.

“The jury heard the evidence and concluded that Walmart stole Zest’s revolutionary technology and incorporated it into a patent that was later published, destroying Zest’s trade secret,” Patrick Ryan of Bartko Pavia LLP of San Francisco, Zest Lab’s lead trial counsel, said in a news release. “The jury found that Walmart’s conduct was willful and malicious; thus, they sent a strong multi-million dollar deterrent message to companies like Walmart who might contemplate stealing the trade secrets of other small companies.”

Zest created the Zest Fresh Solution to use in produce supply chain logistics. The technology could reduce food waste by predicting when food would expire based on a complex process of combining and analyzing data from every stage of the supply chain in order to constantly recalculate the predicted shelf life of produce using machine learning, the news release said. Zest touted the technology would reduce billions of dollars in produce from being thrown into the trash while at the same time helping the environment, the release said. Complete article

Listeria outbreak: full list of recalls affecting food products sold at Walmart 05/13/2025

There has been a steady stream of recalls since March 2025, ranging from tortilla chips to frozen meals.

Since March 2025, nearly six food items available at Walmart have been recalled, as reported by the company and the US Food and Drug Administration.

The strange pattern of recalls at Walmart—the world's largest retailer, selling products to 95 percent of Americans, according to AITechtonic—occurs as the nation grapples with a listeria outbreak.

The retail giant released a statement on its website in an apparent attempt to mitigate concern over the recalls: "Walmart and Sam's Club are committed to the health and safety of our customers and members and to providing products that are safe and compliant, all supported by our health and wellness, product safety, and food safety professionals. In the event of a product recall, we work swiftly to block the item from being sold and remove it from our stores and clubs." Complete article

CFPB Drops Lawsuit Against Walmart and FinTech Company Branch 05/13/2025

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reportedly dropped a lawsuit against Walmart and Branch that it filed in December.

The agency filed a notice of dismissal Tuesday (May 13), Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

The CFPB sued Walmart and Branch on Dec. 23, alleging that the retailer and the FinTech company illegally opened accounts for gig economy delivery drivers without their consent, required drivers to receive their pay through those accounts, collected junk fees from the drivers, and did not deliver the “instant access” to pay that they had promised.

The agency’s complaint centered on Walmart’s Spark Driver program, which includes gig economy drivers making last-mile deliveries from Walmart stores, and Branch’s deposit account that is accessible through a digital app and debit card.

“Walmart made false promises, illegally opened accounts, and took advantage of more than a million delivery drivers,” Rohit Chopra, who was director of the CFPB at the time, said in a press release announcing the lawsuit. Complete article

Cedar Hill Tx. woman sues Walmart for more than $11M after alleged attack over $1.06 slushie 05/21/2025

Videos showed the cashier stopping her at the door, grabbing the drink and giving Ann Flores’ money back. Then Flores said the cashier attacked her.

CEDAR HILL, Texas — When Ann Flores left her mother-in-law’s funeral last September, all she wanted was to repeat their favorite routine.

“She was wanting to stop and get one of those slushies,” said Flores, a Cedar Hill resident.

The two used to stop at the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Cedar Hill for slushies.

On Sept. 27, instead of spending $1.06 for a special memory, the cost was more than Flores expected.

“I can't. Words can't describe how before that day…That day has changed my life," she said.

Surveillance videos from inside the store showed Flores buying her slushie. There’s no audio to confirm what was said, but Flores can be seen putting her money on the counter and sliding it toward the cashier.

“She says, 'pick up that,' you know. 'Pick it up and put it in my hand,'” said Flores.

That is when she said she started to leave. She told WFAA that the cashier began shouting racial slurs.

Videos showed the cashier stopping her at the door, grabbing the drink and giving Flores’ money back. Then Flores said the cashier attacked her. “Just blindsided, something that over $1.06,” said Flores. Complete article

The People’s Union Organizes Boycott Against Walmart’s ‘Corporate Greed’ 05/23/2025

The People’s Union is launching a second nationwide boycott against Walmart to combat the retailer’s “corporate greed.”

On May 20, People’s Union Founder John Schwarz took to Instagram to urge shoppers to boycott Walmart from May 20 to 26. The grassroots group behind the one-day economic blackout on Feb. 28 is now calling for a week-long boycott of Walmart, Sam’s Club, and affiliated brands like Great Value and Equate.

The latest blackout comes in response to Walmart’s planned price hikes that the retailer has tied to Trump’s tariffs.

“Because after all the record profits, all the tax loopholes, all the corporate greed, Walmart now once again wants to raise prices,” Schwartz said in the video. “But this time, because of the tariffs, as if they’re not already raking in billions, as if they can’t absorb the cost. As if you and I should carry this burden.” Complete article

Attorney General James Fines Walmart for Shipping Illegal Realistic Toy Guns to New York 05/27/2025

OAG Investigation Found That Walmart Shipped Nine Realistic Toy Guns to New York, Walmart to Pay $14,000 in Penalties.

On May 27, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that her office secured a settlement with Walmart for shipping realistic-looking toy guns to New York. An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) found that third-party sellers on Walmart’s online store sold realistic-looking toy guns to New Yorkers and Walmart shipped nine of them to addresses in New York, including New York City, Westchester, and Western New York. New York law prohibits retailers from selling or shipping toy guns that are black, dark blue, silver, or aluminum-colored and look like a real gun. Realistic-looking toy guns can be used to engage in unlawful activity and have led to several deaths and shootings across the state. Businesses that illegally sell or distribute realistic-looking toy guns in New York can be fined up to $1,000 per violation. As a result of this settlement, Walmart must pay $16,000 in penalties and fees and ensure that all its third-party sellers are unable to sell imitation toy guns to New York.

“Realistic-looking toy guns can put communities in serious danger and that is why they are banned in New York,” said Attorney General James. “Walmart failed to prevent its third-party sellers from selling realistic-looking toy guns to New York addresses, violating our laws and putting people at risk. The ban on realistic-looking toy guns is meant to keep New Yorkers safe and my office will not hesitate to hold any business that violates that law accountable.”

An OAG investigation found that third-party sellers on Walmart’s online store sold realistic-looking toy guns and Walmart shipped them to New York through its fulfillment services. Investigators from OAG were able to purchase a toy gun from Walmart and have it shipped to New York. Complete article

A New Jersey man who allegedly fell in Walmart last summer has turned down a $75,000 settlement offer from the retail giant and instead plans to file a federal lawsuit for $2 million, court records show.

Ramon W. Camilo, of Jersey City, states in court papers he was picking up supplies for his employer about 3:45 p.m. on July 26, 2024, at a Walmart in Suffern, New York, when he slipped on a wet spot.

Camilo suffered serious back and spinal injuries after the incident, which required “lumbar fusion surgery,” according to court documents filed May 16 in U.S. District Court.

Attorneys representing Walmart and a spokesperson for the corporation did not respond to requests for comment on the case.

The lawsuit was first initiated in Hudson County Superior Court in April, but a notice filed last week seeks to have the matter heard in federal court, in part, because the alleged damages exceed $75,000. Complete article

A deputy responded to Walmart, located at 17961 S U.S. Hwy. 441, Summerfield, regarding a theft at 4:35 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, 63-year-old Richard Allen Roberts, was already in the loss prevention office.

Upon arrival, the deputy met with a loss prevention associate who advised that he saw Roberts in the store. Roberts picked up various tools, which seemed suspicious due to the number of items being selected. The associate continued watching him as he selected other various items, including food and an air conditioning unit, the report said.

The associate watched Roberts go to the grocery area, pick up a food item and put it in his pocket. Roberts then went to leave the store through the garden area and passed all points of sale.
