Walmart Crime Report April 2024

Walmart had at least seven more shootings in April 2024, with four of them fatal, and three of those deaths caused by cops shooting suspects, although one of the fatal cop shootings was across the intersection from Walmart, and at least one more injury. There was also one more shooting with a pellet gun with a child nearby at risk, and close to, if not more than half a dozen other gun related crimes including robberies, and domestic disputes.

In addition to the four people killed in shootings there were two more killed in accidents, two bodies found on their property, one person killed in a stabbing and another person that went missing at Walmart and was found dead elsewhere for unknown reasons, bringing the total to ten people dead at Walmart or related to their business.

A political candidate for state office was accused of assaulting a teenager at Walmart, yet he continued his campaign, at least for now. An employee has been charged with rape after calling a fourteen year old "cute" and getting her phone number, before she disappeared later that day, filing a complaint when she reappeared, but it took months to catch him, for some reason.

There have also been a large number of assaults, including on employees, police, senior citizens, brawls, robberies, and more, including two incidents in California where hammer-wielding people robbed two Walmarts and got away; the media hasn't connected the two incidents, despite the similarities.

There are also numerous complaints about police tactics including use of excessive force for minor crimes, including selling flowers at Walmart, and another incident where they abused a diabetic because they didn't understand his medical condition.

Walmart and the police often go to extreme measures for incredibly petty crimes, including putting out Facebook notifications asking the public for help with a skip-skanner of only $81.28 roth of products and used traffic violations and surveillance equipment to catch him; not to long ago they used helicopters and K-9s for another petty theft; incidents like these must cost taxpayers hundreds if not thousands of dollars for petty theft by people that may be desperate because of a rigged economy. Yet they don't prosecute white collar crime like this, if they prosecute it at all, even when the amount rich people steal from working class or poor is much higher.

there are also a stunning number of skimmers being found at their stores every month, with the data of customers put at risk, not Walmart, and this has been especially bad at self-checkouts, yet little efforts is being made to warn customers about this, and only a small fraction of self-checkouts are being removed, not because of this, but because thefts from the store. They only care about their own profits, not scams against customers.

Walmart is also being sued by the family of a worker who was stabbed to death by an emotionally unstable racist who stole knives, which weren't locked up, and used them to kill a random victim. For loss prevention reasons they lock up many petty things including underwear, but not dangerous things like knives. One recent study found that Walmart is enabling their own theft problem, which is true, but tehy cite many petty reasons, without mentioning more important issues like store design making it easy to run out with full carts, or at least try and self-checkout; and another separate study also calls them out calling Walmart unsafe and pointing out that they had "1,139 gun-related incidents" in a ten year period, which is a large under estimate; they had more shootings than that in that same time period, and if you count other gun related incidents where shots weren't fired there were well over twice that in the same time period, if not three times as much.

Complaints about self-checkout, receipt checks and other loss prevention measures are going through the roof, including an automated siren that goes off for suspected skip scanners, which can be very embarrassing and add to many other false accusations. It's getting to the point where some people are afraid to go shopping without a lawyer.

In addition to the two fatal accidents there were over a dozen other major accidents, chases, car thefts, hit and runs, drunk drivings, and other automobile accidents or crimes, including a crane that collapsed at there headquarters which is under construction. There was also one arson and another attempted arson at their store, which is about as few fires or arsons as they ever get; and in addition to the fatal stabbing they had there were another five or six more knife crimes, including more stabbings and thefts, including one that injured a police officer and a couple for incredibly petty thefts.

Walmart's ties with the press are growing, and some of it is even being reported, although not in a high profile manner. Cesar Conde has been under fire because he's an NBC news chief and has been providing positive coverage of both Walmart and Pepsi, without disclosing the fact that he's on the board of both, raising a major conflict of interest concern. This is clear and has been reported, but there's much more subtle evidence showing media and search engines have undisclosed motives to support Walmart like and incredibly large number of ads that are made to look like news stories, and burying of many other crime problems, which isn't being reported nearly as much as it used to even though it's unlikely that it's going down.

Walmart had at least three more products that were recalled, and possibly another three that should ahve been recalled, including laundry packets, electric mini choppers that have caused lacerations, and frozen pizzas that may have an allergy risk, which were all recalled. There are also reports of bandages that may have toxic PFAs, products with warning labels in fine print, and an energy drink that's involved in several lawsuits and may contain some ingredients that weren't approved by the FDA for eating, yet instead of recalling them they're marketing them down at a discount and the first two may not even be marked down.

Walmart has steadily been increasing their involvement in health care for years, including buying insurance companies, their own pharmacies, eye and ear care, and much more. This includes health care clinics, which as late as this month they continued to say they wanted to expand, but eight days after their latest claim they wanted to increase their involvement in health care, they announced they were closing down all their clinics, because they weren't profitable. Pharmacies, eye and ear centers are still open as well as other health care industries, but the most treatment in these clinics, mainly in the south, are now ending.

It's hard to imagine who would ever turn to Walmart for health care.

Have you ever expected a cake maker to write the words “Aries Baby (small, cursive, middle of cake)”

The portion in parenthesis was, of course, supposed to be a description of how the writing should look, not what should be written. George H.W. Bush made the same mistake when reading the teleprompter once. It told him what to say but in brackets, which was supposed to remind him of what kind of emotion he was supposed to sinpire it said [Message We Care], which he wasn't supposed to read out loud, but he did. This was satirized in "The Distinguished Gentleman," but most people forgot it was copying a blunder.

Think that's a rare blunder for Walmart?

They also paid to have a "local" mural installed in Lafayette Indiana; but the mural was of a cathedral in Lafayette Louisiana, and another "local" landmark was misspelled.

I don't know how credible you think the Onion is, even though some people think they're closer to the truth than traditional media; but they're reporting that Walmart's baby registry is asking new mothers in certain states whether their child was a "forced birth" due to laws restricting abortion.

How often do you see a Walmart delivery driver or passenger of the deliverer pee in your yard? Only In Florida?

As usual Walmart claims no responsibility for their contracted employees, any more than they acknowledge responsibility for traditional employees.

How often do you see intoxicated women driving through the Walmart parking lot? Only in Texas?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in April 2024. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

WILDWOOD, Fla. (TND) — A Florida man is charged with stealing from Walmart, but he wasn't arrested until almost a month later, when he apparently made a right turn on red without coming to a complete stop. Then, his alleged accomplice in the theft was arrested a few days after that.

The Walmart incident happened Jan. 25 and was investigated Feb. 2.

According to the arrest report, Austin Allen Ford and codefendant Kebram D’Tavio Followell “collected several items and placed them on their persons or within the shopping cart, then went to the self-checkout register where they only scanned select items.

“While scanning items, several items’ bar codes were covered, using items of lesser value where only the item of lesser value was scanned for purchase.”

Walmart claimed the items that had not been scanned were worth $81.28. Complete article

‘Walmart y’all trying to rob folk on the low‘: Walmart customer notices unusual activity on the self-checkout machine when scanning goods 04/02/2024

A Walmart customer recently pulled out her phone and hit record when she noticed something peculiar on the self-checkout screen. As she scanned her groceries, she noticed an item mysteriously appeared in her cart. The problem? She claims she hadn’t scanned anything resembling it.

The video, posted by Jazmine Ashley (@jazmineashley06) on March 31 has quickly gone viral, accumulating over 929,700 views in just one day.

“I’m in Walmart shopping,” she begins, with the camera darting between her bags and the register. “And I noticed this, um, as I’m scanning. It ain’t nothing over here that says ‘girls’ nothing—this is food. So how did this get over here? I need to understand this. Somebody’s got to explain, because I know you’re not just adding stuff and people not paying attention.”

The item in question? A label reading “Girls Casual.” A quick search on Walmart’s online store suggests the label was intended for a clothing item.

“That would have been $17 that I paid for, that I didn’t even know was on there,” she complains to a Walmart employee. “I’m not blaming you, I’m not upset with you. It’s not your fault. I’m just saying somebody’s got to tell me something. That’s crazy. Ain’t no extra stickers, ain’t no clothes in there. That’s literally frozen food items.”

In the comments section of the video, viewers shared similar experiences, with one saying, “YES this has happened to me more than once and the first time it was a $80 item and the second time around $10. I always check now.”

Another commenter remarked, “I would’ve voided the transaction and rescan the stuff to see what’s scanning the $16. That’s crazy!”

A self-proclaimed Walmart employee chimed in, offering an explanation: “My guess is that whoever labeled out the items to put them on the shelves had labeled the items wrong and it will [be] scanned as something else.” Complete article

SHOCK CHANGE Walmart raises return fees for certain orders but customers may be able to ‘keep’ unwanted items for free 04/01/2024

Details on the reasoning behind the shipping fee increase were limited in the Walmart Marketplace Seller Digest for March.

"Changing market conditions" was noted by Walmart as the primary cause. .....

Some shoppers would essentially get the item for free, and the seller would avoid the return shipping costs.

"Sometimes it's more cost-effective for Marketplace sellers to let customers keep an item and process the refund than it is to pay a return shipping fee," Walmart's page on the rule notes. Complete article

Amazon, Walmart workers worry about surveillance tech in warehouses 04/10/2024

Nearly half of warehouse workers who participated in a recent survey of Amazon and Walmart employees said they feel like they’re being watched at work.

Most employees said they didn’t know how the company used that information — and roughly 40% said that the monitoring contributed to pressure to move faster, even if that meant increasing the risk of injury.

“Both companies have succeeded by pioneering new methods of getting cheap goods to the American consumer — with unparalleled convenience and speed. Their outsized economic power, however, has a high cost,” read the report, released Wednesday by activist group and nonprofit Oxfam.

Oxfam is a shareholder of Amazon and Walmart and often submits resolutions for other shareholders to vote on related to worker safety and human rights.

The report released Wednesday used data from two surveys from the Center for Urban Economic Development, a research organization at the University of Illinois Chicago, as well as interviews with employees. Those surveys included responses from 1,484 Amazon workers and 444 Walmart workers. Complete article

Walmart hit with $101 million judgement in breach-of-contract case 04/09/2024

Walmart is on the hook for a $101 million verdict after a jury determined the Bentonville mega-retailer wrongfully canceled a pandemic-era contract for protective gloves.

Jurors in the United States District Court for the Western District of Arkansas spent 10 days in the courtroom on this case. Ultimately, they decided Walmart was in the wrong to cancel a $500 million contract for pandemic-era examination gloves with a business called London Luxury.

“Walmart executives made a bad bet on PPE prices. When prices dropped, they tried to cancel the contract and invent excuses rather than take responsibility for their bad business decisions,” New York-based attorneys Brendon DeMay and Priyanka Timblo said in a joint statement issued after Tuesday’s verdict. OFF THE WAL ‘It’s ridiculous,’ fumes Walmart shopper after he faced 45 minute wait to buy $3 item & others flag ‘inconsistent’ rule 04/10/2024

Shoppers must then call over a member of staff to unlock the doors and retrieve the goods the customer wants.

“They made me wait over 45 minutes to go through the same process you just mentioned for a $3 pair of boot laces,” Miller wrote on Facebook. Complete article

CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — The family of Jason Jenkins, the 18-year-old Rockford teen stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack in a Walmart store on March 24th, is suing the company.

Jenkins mother, Nila, and twin brother, Jasper, spoke to reporters alongside an attorney Jack Casciato from the law firm of Curcio and Casciato, in Chicago on Thursday.

The suit, to be filed Thursday in Cook County, charges that Walmart and Brosnan Risk Consulting Ltd failed to apprehend Carter prior to the stabbing, failed to have a proper emergency action plan, failed to warn shoppers of Carter’s presence, and failed to contact law enforcement in a timely manner. .....

“One of our allegations in the complaint is the accessibility of being able to obtain deadly weapons within the store,” Casciato said. “He had time to access a hunting knife, which is in one location of the store, a kitchen knife in the other location in the store, open that packaging, and then walk amongst the store, targeting people, specifically African Americans.”

Do Yourself A Favor And Avoid Walmart's Wild-Caught Frozen Salmon 04/11/2024

Walmart is known for offering grocery staples and a variety of other items at discount prices and, with a network of more than 4,600 stores across the United States, it's easy to see why the company tops the National Retail Federation's 2023 list of top 100 retailers. But if you're looking to stock up on seafood, do yourself a favor and avoid Walmart's wild-caught frozen salmon.

There are a few reasons to keep the store's Great Value Wild-Caught Pink Salmon Skin-on Fillets off your shopping list, first of which being they're not good. At least not according to reviews of the product. The reviews, which average 2.3 out of five stars as of this writing, commonly cite the fish as being "mushy" with a "terrible" and "disgusting" smell and taste. "Very low quality. I'm not even convinced this is an actual fish," one customer wrote.

Customers also complained that the salmon pieces look nothing like the image on the front of the bag and are incredibly waterlogged. This repeated charge is likely due to the sodium tripolyphosphate that's listed as an ingredient. This additive helps food retain moisture but should be avoided, as it ends up diluting the flavor and texture of the fish, leaving a mushy mess behind. Complete article

NBC offers glowing coverage of Walmart, Pepsi as news chief serves as board member for both companies 04/11/2024

Cesar Conde has been under fire since NBC's Ronna McDaniel meltdown last month.

NBC News has provided glowing coverage of Walmart and PepsiCo, two companies for which a top network executive holds board positions.

NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde, who oversees NBC News, CNBC, and MSNBC, has been facing intense scrutiny following NBC's hiring – and swift firing – of former RNC chair Ronna McDaniel, who sparked outrage from the network's liberal stars when she was signed.

But it appears the McDaniel melodrama isn't Conde's only headache, as his additional jobs outside the Comcast-owned company are raising other questions.

Conde joined PepsiCo's board of directors in 2016 and Walmart's board of directors in 2019. The following year, he was tapped to lead NBC's entire news operation.

According to the Associated Press, which cites Salary.com, Conde "earned $275,018 from Walmart in 2022 and $320,000 from PepsiCo, in a combination of cash and stock." Complete article

‘There are actual victims’: Walmart worker slams customer for claiming to have nearly been trafficked 04/12/2024

A Walmart worker is calling out a customer who claimed to nearly be a victim of human trafficking in the parking lot. The worker, who was there, says the shopper lied about her experience.

The National Human Trafficking Hotline reported over 10,000 cases of human trafficking in 2021, involving over 16,000 individuals, while the hotline has identified over 82,000 cases of trafficking since its inception in 2007. These numbers include victims of both sex trafficking and forced labor.

With roughly 85% of the hotline’s reported cases including female victims in 2021, it is evident why many women always have their guard up. And it’s fair to say that most women have found themselves in some sort of sketchy scenario, making them fear the worst.

Still, a lot of fearmongering regarding human trafficking is spread online, leaving many unsure who to trust. TikToker Kira (@its.0nly.forever) advises users to be truthful to their experiences out of respect for those who have actually been through it.

Kira, a Walmart employee, recorded their response to a viral video from a shopper who made false claims about their recent Walmart trip. Their TikTok clip, posted Tuesday, reveals Kira’s side of what actually happened that Friday night.

Walmart Evades Suit of Customer Hit by Shoplifter Getaway Driver 04/12/2024

Workers OK to confront thief outside, dashing negligence claim.

Retailer’s harm mitigation policies don’t bolster lawsuit.

Walmart Inc. can’t be held liable for a thief’s getaway driver hitting a customer in the store parking lot, an appeals court ruled in a win for retailers in Florida seeking to deter shoplifting.

Walmart and other retailers don’t automatically expand their “zone of risk"—the area in which they’re liable for the health and safety of customers—beyond the confines of a store by confronting shoplifters on the sidewalk, a divided Fifth District Court of Appeals ruled Friday. And even if retailers have internal polices limiting how employees interact with thieves, that doesn’t mean having such a policy—or a worker breaking ... Complete article

‘It’s because we’re timed’: Walmart shopper questions online order pickers after seeing how her groceries arrived 04/15/2024

'Let me show you how dumb Walmart pick-up is.'

A woman questioned the process of Walmart’s online order pickers after each of her items arrived in individual grocery bags.

TikTok user Meg (@megelizzz4) told her 68,000 followers, “Yo. Let me show you how dumb Walmart pick-up is.”

She first revealed a bag of spinach. “First of all, this was in a bag by itself, OK?” she said.

It didn’t stop there. One by one, she unveiled the items she ordered: hot dogs, kiwis, and cucumbers. The items came in their own bags. She also ordered two packs of bacon, and each arrived in its own bag. “Why … y’all put the bacon in the same … bag?” she asked, angrily kicking the plastic bags. ....

“As a Wal-Mart employee it’s just easier bc were timed if u don’t want that many bags ask for no bags and bring your own and as far as wrong items turn off Substitutions also multiple ppl pick ur order,” a second stated.

“Well the shoppers are timed so it’s faster to just bag it and drop it than to get in the bin open a bag with an item and add to it. just be happy you got your stuff and didn’t have to shop it yourself,” another echoed. Complete article

WAL-K OUT ‘You can just keep walking,’ woman says as Walmart shopper shares rude response to receipt check – lawyer says otherwise 04/16/2024

WALMART shoppers shared how they get out of tedious receipt checks as they leave the store, which many don't know is an option, however, a lawyer says you might want to think twice.

Theft is costing the retail industry more than $100 billion each year, forcing several companies to think outside the box with new measures being implemented to protect inventory.

One of these measures involves having employees ready to check receipts as customers try to exit the store.

However, many shoppers have expressed their frustration with the move, sparking debates on social media about whether or not they actually have to go with the checks.

"Today I've learned a shocking amount of people don't know you don't actually have to stop for store greeters/receipt checkers," wrote one person on X, formerly known as Twitter. Complete article

Walmart customer shares ridiculous custom cake fail: ‘My mouth dropped’ 04/16/2024

Does this take the cake for dessert fails?

A flabbergasted woman shamed Walmart’s bakery department online after incorrectly decorating her cake, sharing images of the sweet snafu online.

TikToker Peyton Chimack, 22, from Illinois, ordered what should have been a simple birthday cake: white frosting with black, cursive lettering reading “Aries baby.” She even provided a photo of a similar creation for decorators to follow.

Instead, she encountered a confectionary miscommunication.

Evidently, Walmart’s cake decorator misunderstood Chimack’s written instructions. She had asked for the words “Aries Baby” to be written on the top, and continued to describe what she was looking for in those letters: “Small, cursive, middle of cake.”

So, that’s what she got — the words “Aries Baby” followed by the words “small, cursive, middle of cake” in parenthesis — just as she’d scrawled on the bakery’s form. Complete article

Shoplifting's biggest enablers might be the retailers themselves 04/16/2024

Retailers have been talking a lot about how theft is a problem at their stores.

But Walmart, Target, and other chains' own policies and practices could be worsening the problem.

Conflicting policies and understaffing can make it hard for workers to prevent theft.

The retail industry has spent much of the past year raising alarms around shoplifting and "organized retail crime."

But while conversations about the problem of theft at stores often center on external factors such as law enforcement and the criminal justice system, one of the biggest obstacles to curtailing theft may be a lot closer to home.

That's because major retailers, including Walmart and Target, have policies that can sometimes prevent their own staff from addressing shoplifting at their stores, as current and former employees told Business Insider.

Some workers have been disciplined or fired for going after shoplifters, according to interviews and media reports. Others say a lack of resources and follow-ups after the fact also makes it more logical for the workers to just turn a blind eye to the problem rather than do anything about it. Complete article (For some reason this article ignores the most obvious factors, like self check-out, and store design making it easy to go out the door with full carts, and focuses on smaller contributing causes enabling theft.)

Lafayette Walmart to remove 'local' mural after discovering errors in depictions 04/16/2024

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — After completing renovations to the Veterans Memorial Parkway Walmart in Lafayette, the company unveiled a new mural displayed inside the far eastside entrance to the store. Among the images depicted in the mural were a man, a woman, the Tippecanoe County Courthouse and the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

The problem? The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist isn't located in Lafayette, Indiana — it's located in Lafayette, Louisiana.

In addition to the incorrect church depicted in the mural, the name "Colombian Park" is also painted across the top among several butterflies — except that's not how the Lafayette landmark park is spelled, but rather Columbian Park. .....

"We have some artists who are really great about wanting to research and personalize it to the community, and, of course, as a community we always see the mock-up that the artist has put together," Lee said. "Had Walmart or the artist on this project done any of this, these mistakes could have been caught earlier. I dig their style, but they could have made sure they were correct in which Lafayette they were portraying." Complete article

Video shows woman peeing on napkin outside North Miami Beach home during Fla. Walmart grocery delivery 04/17/2024

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A grocery drop-off in a North Miami Beach neighborhood took a nasty turn when a woman pulled down her pants and urinated in the driveway of a home.

A witness who spoke with 7News said she saw the arrival of an SUV delivering groceries along Northeast 164th Street, in the Eastern Shores neighborhood, Wednesday night.

“I recognized it was a delivery,” said the witness.

But not one worthy of a five-star review. The witness, who asked not to be identified, said she knew something was up with the woman in the passenger seat.

“She was looking around, suspicious. That’s what made me grab my camera,” said the witness, “so, when she got to her passenger seat, she left the door open, and she squatted to go to the bathroom.”

As the man who was driving the vehicle hauled delivery items, the woman urinated on the residential street, relieving herself into what appears to be a napkin or tissue paper. ....

“I don’t even know what to do with the food or the items that I got,” he said. “I don’t know what they’re touching after what they’re doing, they’re definitely not cleaning their hands.” Complete article

Woman Discovers Walmart Is Charging More For Their Meat By Saying It Weighs More Than It Does — And She's Not Alone 04/17/2024

Her discovery comes just months after a $45 million class-action settlement against Walmart for erroneously weighing meat and produce.

Grocery shopping has become downright infuriating in the past few years, as runaway inflation has left prices staggeringly high.

Even worse, much of the "inflation" we've seen has been revealed to be nothing more than price gouging by food companies. But foods sold by weight are at least somewhat exempt from that scam, right? Think again, especially if you shop at Walmart.

A shopper discovered Walmart is overcharging for meat by weighing and labeling it incorrectly.

Multiple studies have revealed that as much as 50% of the inflation we've seen in recent years is caused by manufacturers and suppliers continually jacking up prices simply because they can, a process known as greedflation. This is why corporate profits have soared to unprecedented levels despite inflation. Complete article

‘This stereotype needs to stop!’: Walmart shopper notices that e.l.f. Cosmetics products are locked up depending on foundation shade 04/18/2024

An interesting—and some may say disturbing trend—has emerged of security devices being put on makeup at major retailers. Not only are the security devices in place, but customers have posted videos of the devices only being on darker shades of makeup, stirring up criticism.

Past videos have shown this involving Maybelline makeup sold at Walmart, and now a recent TikTok video shows security devices being placed on darker shades of concealers from e.l.f. Cosmetics.

Walmart, M.D.: Why the world’s largest retailer wants to be America’s doctor 04/22/2024

Walmart, the largest U.S. employer with a workforce of 1.6 million, is slowly building a network of in-store clinics, believing it has a place in America’s health care system.

Health care has to be accessible and sometimes that means being convenient, said Dr. David Carmouche, senior vice president of health care delivery at Walmart.

Carmouche said he had questions about Walmart’s plans to establish clinics before he joined the retailer in 2021, but then took a broader view of how Americans live.

Health care for most people is primary, preventative care and sometimes urgent care, but most people aren’t admitted to a hospital in a given year, he said, and there’s value in bringing health care where people go regularly. Complete article

The Onion: Walmart Baby Registry Questionnaire Includes Checkbox For Whether Or Not Pregnancy Forced 04/23/2024

BENTONVILLE, AR—Adapting the retail outlet’s previously simple sign-up questionnaires to the modern world, Walmart announced Monday that its baby registry would now include a checkbox for denoting whether or not the pregnancy was forced.

“We heard from many Walmart customers that it would be convenient to have a registry option for parents-to-be who were forced into having a baby by their state government, as this would be easier than having to explain the situation at the shower,” said Walmart.com representative Noreen Davis, adding that the site’s recommended-products algorithm would also be tailored to fall more in line with the somber tone of a court-mandated birth.

“Parents who have been legally ordered to carry a nonviable fetus to term because they are pawns of American politics, for instance, may be more interested in crowdfunded donations to cover their legal fees than in one of our many fabulous learning toys for tots. Similarly, when shower guests click through to a forced-birth page, they’ll be able to see the horrifying circumstances in which the baby was conceived, as well as whether or not the parent remains at risk of going to jail for seeking termination.”

At press time, Walmart announced that because of the overwhelming number of users who selected it, the forced-birth option would now be the default for all baby and wedding registries. Complete article

The incident began at a home in the 400 block of West Ohio Street, near West Morrison and North Bunnell streets.

Retail giant Walmart has agreed to pay nearly $190,000 following an investigation into possible violations of gig and app-based worker laws.

The Seattle Office of Labor Standards alleged that Walmart failed to provide premium pay and a notice of rights to gig workers in violation of the temporary Gig Worker Premium Pay Ordinance.

Plastic bags from Walmart US recycling bins tracked to controversial plastic facilities in Southeast Asia 04/23/2024

Pua Lay Peng lives on the front lines of the global plastic pollution crisis. The 52-year-old's hometown of Jenjarom, Malaysia has been transformed in recent years by thousands of tons of imported plastic waste from the U.S. and other wealthy nations. As a result, the once quiet agricultural town she grew up in is now surrounded by dumpsites and smokestacks from plastic factories that she says pose dire health risks for her and her loved ones.

"We want to let people who send their waste to Malaysia know that we need your help," she told ABC News. "Your waste is harmful and threatens the health of my family, my children, and also destroys the future of my people, my generation."

Hidden among the tsunami of plastic waste America sent to Southeast Asia last year were three of the 19 tracking devices ABC News secured to plastic bags and dropped off at Walmart store recycling bins across the U.S. Two of those trackers ended up at plastic facilities outside of Port Klang, Malaysia, not far from Pua Lay Peng's hometown, while a third landed in Indonesia.

"No responsible waste company in the United States, no responsible local government should be exporting plastic waste to other countries," Judith Enck, a former Environmental Protection Agency administrator and current president of the anti-plastic pollution project Beyond Plastics, told ABC News. "It's causing real damage, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia," Enck said. Complete article

Charges Filed in Nebraska WalMart Disturbance 04/25/2024

SIDNEY--On April 13 and April 14, two separate incidents in Sidney required police and fire department intervention, and law and enforcement and the court system are now involved to resolve both incidents and determine exactly what occurred.

A little after 2 p.m. on Saturday, both Cheyenne County Sheriff's Department and Sidney Police personnel responded to a disturbance at WalMart, located at 3001 Silverberg Drive in Sidney. Deputy Zachary Goodrich of the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Department and Officer Nicholas Conger of the Sidney Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving man with a gun. When the officers arrived, WalMart customers and employees were being evacuated from the store.

At 2:18 p.m., Officer Conger arrived on the scene and as he was trying to make contact with WalMart, he encountered a male in shorts and a tank top, later identified as Jeremy Lurz of Sidney. Lurz removed a green and black handgun which was in a holster, and turned it over to Officer Conger. Lurz advised Conger that the weapon was a "Pepper Ball Gun". After clearing the weapon, Conger confirmed it was a CO2 powered type weapon that shoots .43 caliber "pepper balls." Conger noted that the weapon looked like a real pistol and had no visible markings, such as yellow or orange markings, to indicate that it was not a real gun. Complete article

Firm expands lawsuit against Ga. Walmart, demands $750M after janitor films women at Decatur store 04/23/2024

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - An Atlanta law firm has expanded its previous lawsuit against Walmart, alleging the stores provide a “fertile crime scene for sex offenders” and demanding $750 million.

In November, five women filed a lawsuit against former employee Lester Jolly and Walmart. They accused the janitor of filming them in the bathroom at a store off Memorial Drive in Decatur and said Walmart was negligent by not preventing the incidents. 21-YEAR-OLD WALMART ASSOCIATE WINS PA. DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION TO 89TH HOUSE DISTRICT 04/24/2024

Noah Kreischer, a 21-year-old Walmart Associate (D-Guilford), won the Democratic nomination for Pennsylvania’s 89th Legislative District Tuesday night. Kreischer was unopposed, winning 98.79% of the vote against write-ins. Kreischer’s general election opponent, incumbent State Representative Rob Kauffman (R-Greene), won his Party’s nomination with 98.57% of the vote. Representative Kauffman has yet to publicly comment on either his or Kreischer’s nominations.

The 2024 cycle will give Kauffman his first challenger since 2016.

Kreischer thanked voters the day after his primary win across social media, citing his slightly higher percentage in his race as reason to remain optimistic for November; “We got more support amongst our Party, percentage-wise, than the Representative did in his. We will only build on these numbers across the coming months of campaigning as we reach out to Republicans, independents and 3rd-party voters. I intend on being bipartisan as both a legislator and a candidate.” Kreischer’s policy agenda includes term limits, a reduction of the general assembly’s salary, the protection of gun rights, a reform of PA’s business tax credit system, green energy that doesn’t disrupt the economy, the abolition of the death penalty, the legalization of marijuana, and opening PA’s primaries beyond the major parties’ participation. Deputy shoots, kills man armed with two guns at Fla. shopping plaza 04/25/2024 (Across intersection from Walmart)

LAKE WORTH, Fla. (CBS12) — A Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a man Thursday morning who was allegedly threatening passerby with a rifle at a shopping plaza near Boynton Beach.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the slain suspect was pointing guns at people outside a Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of Hypoluxo Road and Military Trail when the deputy was called. He also allegedly tried to carjack a woman who had a child in the vehicle, the sheriff said at a news conference held at the scene of the shooting.

Around 9:30 a.m., a deputy responded to the scene and tried to de-escalate the situation, Bradshaw explained. The suspect was allegedly combative and pointed his rifle at the deputy, the sheriff said.

"Get your hands up," the deputy commanded, Bradshaw said.

That's when, the sheriff said, the suspect picked up a shotgun in a Walmart shopping cart and continued to resist the deputy, however the deputy was able to talk him into putting down the shotgun.

According to Bradshaw, the suspect went to pick up the rifle that was on the ground and the deputy fired. Bradshaw said he did not know how many shots the deputy fired. The individual was taken to a hospital but did not survive. Complete article

Walmart Slammed as ‘Unsafe and Reckless’ Employer in ‘Dirty Dozen’ Report 04/25/2024

Walmart wants its customers to “Save money, live better”—but does it uphold the same standard for its employees?

The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH) released its annual “Dirty Dozen” report Thursday, highlighting a group of 12 “unsafe and reckless employers, risking the lives of workers and communities by failing to eliminate known, preventable hazards.”

Superstore sovereign Walmart earned a spot on this year’s list. The report’s release comes just ahead of Workers’ Memorial Day, honored annually on April 28. The day looks to honor workers who have been killed, injured, disabled or made ill due to their work.

Jessica Martinez, co-executive director of National COSH, said the report aims to make consumers, agencies and employers aware of the issues plaguing workers at these companies. .....

Where National COSH said Walmart has done wrong.

The report points to several reasons that led to Walmart being placed on this year’s list, starting with the death of store associate Janikka Perry.

Perry died of a heart attack in the bathroom of the Walmart store she worked at in North Little Rock, Ark., in 2022. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s fatality inspection data shows no record of Perry’s death. OSHA’s policy stipulates employers must notify OSHA within eight hours when an employee dies on the job.

National COSH’s report also references high levels of gun violence in Walmart stores.

Records from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA) show that since January 22, 2014, Walmarts across the U.S. have seen 1,139 gun-related incidents. (There were more than this many shootings in this time period, if you count gun related incidents with no shots fired there were more than twice this many incidents.) Complete article

‘Yet they don’t have cashiers’: Walmart customer calls out floor walkers and the store’s ‘eagle eye’ for tracking him 04/27/2024

Retail surveillance remains a hot topic on TikTok, with customers and employees cluing the public into the many ways chain stores are keeping an eye on them.

From facial recognition and “secret shoppers” who roam the sales floor looking for suspect customers, many methods of in-store surveillance have been exposed to the general public.

Now, one man says it goes farther than that, describing a multi-tiered system of customer surveillance that tracks customers from the parking lot to the aisle.

In the video posted to TikTok by @bigbagspenny616, he says Walmart uses multiple layers of man-powered security to keep an eye on customers, whether they are suspected of theft or not.

“This is what Walmart doesn’t want you guys to know,” he says in the video. “Walmart has a highly skilled team.”

He says this involves “floor walkers,” otherwise known as workers who follow you around the store, and “eagle eye,” what he calls the “eye in the sky,'” presumably the cameras.

“They got the paper gaters,” he continues. “The ones that check your receipts at the door, and then they also will have two people monitoring the parking lot from their vehicles. Now, if you’re a vehicle monitor, all you have to do is practically sit in your car all day on the radio and watch for people. You’re going to log when they come in, and when they log out.” Complete article

Walmart to remove self-checkout counters from store where theft has gotten ‘very scary’ 04/24/2024

Walmart said it will remove self-checkout counters at two more stores — including one where retail theft has gotten so bad that shoppers say going there has become downright “scary.”

The Arkansas-based retail giant didn’t address the problems of retail theft, saying it was ditching the self-checkout lanes at the store in Cleveland and another in Shrewsbury, Mo., as part of a wider move to improve the “in-store shopping experience.”

Shoppers who frequented the Walmart at the Steelyard Commons section of Cleveland criticized the move, saying that paying for their items in a regular checkout lane means they won’t be able to swiftly move in and out of a store that has seen several incidents of retail theft.

“I am probably going to end up going to a different Walmart then because I don’t like to have to wait down here,” Leah Burchnell told WEWS-TV. ....

“Last week we were standing in the doorway as some guy was getting tased for stealing a jacket and had his pockets fully loaded with everything he could grab, I was like, ‘Whoa,'” said Sheneman. Complete article

‘Nobody wants this stuff’: Walmart shopper shows Logan Paul’s ‘PRIME’ drink on rollback amid lawsuit claims 04/29/2024

'The forever chemicals are in the bottles.'

Social Media entrepreneur turned WWE wrestler Logan Paul is facing a double whammy of lawsuits aimed at the contents of his energy drink, Prime Hydration. And one TikToker is claiming to show the damage done to the brand in a viral video that shows pallets of the drink sitting on the shelves of Walmart.

Paul was hit by a pair of lawsuits after the energy drink debuted in January 2022. According to Entrepreneur, one suit, filed in August 2023 in California, accused the drink of “containing PFAS, which are synthetic chemicals used in cleaning products, toiletries, and stain-resistant sprays that are not FDA-approved for consumption.”

A more recent lawsuit, filed this month, accuses, “Paul and Prime Hydration LLC co-founder KSI … of ‘deceptive, and misleading practices’ after testing commissioned by the plaintiff’s attorneys found that the 12-ounce cans of energy drinks contain between 215-225 milligrams of caffeine, instead of the 200 milligrams advertised.”

For his part, Paul has called both lawsuits “‘absolute bull’ and claimed that the third-party testing was “invalid.”

But food vlogger and TikToker OmerEats (@omereats) claims that damage to the brand is already done offering a video, posted to his TikTok account four days ago, as proof. The clip currently has an impressive 4.9 million views as of Monday. Complete article

Walmart to close health centers in retreat from offering medical care 04/30/2024

Walmart described its sudden change of course as a "difficult decision," and cited a "challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs" as unsustainable.

The clinics to be shuttered are in five states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and Texas, according to Walmart, which said it does not yet have specific closure dates. Complete article
