Walmart had at least another sixteen shootings in March of 2024, including at least six causing one death each, and a total of at least seven more injuries; one of the deaths and another of the injuries was caused by police shooting suspects; and another of the deaths plus two of the other injuries were caused by two different Walmart employees, including one that is still at large and is being charged with murder. Near one of the shootings causing an injury at about the same time there was also a person stabbed to death and police are investigating whether it's related, but this wasn't at Walmart and no conection has been disclosed at this time.
In addition to the six people killed in shootings there were two more people killed in accidents, one person stabbed to death, not counting the one not on their property, and a baby that died on their premises, for a total of ten dead last month. There was also a lawsuit filed last month about a death of an employee for health reasons where she didn't have access to emergency care from Dec. 2022, which previously got little or no media coverage, raising more doubts about whether even serious crimes or deaths are adequately reported in the media, and if these estimates are short, possibly by a lot, due to insufficient reporting.
There were also more than a dozen other gun crimes without firing shots, including several armed robberies, or shopliftings where guns were pulled after being confronted, more arguments where guns were drawn, called in threats to shoot up Walmart, including one by a former employee, and one case where someone went to Walmart armed with a rifle and two pistols without threatening anyone, but scaring people and no explanation why, although it could be to demonstrate his second amendment rights which seems to be semi-common.
Walmart and the government are often going to bizarre extreme methods to catch petty shop lifters; in one recent case they sent a helicopter unit and K-9s to search for a shoplifter that ran away after stealing only $108 worth of goods. This is only one of many examples where the government often spends much more than is allegedly being stolen to catch poor people stealing from the rich, yet there's little effort to stop many white collar crimes by rich people from stealing from the poor or middle class, including wage theft, pollution, depriving people of health care, and so much more!
There was also another bizarre case where the police allegedly told a mother that she could make a citizens arrest for someone that was allegedly committing "indecent exposure" or "masturbating," which may have been true, for all I know, but there doesn't appear to be any attempt to physically approach her or her children. She called her nineteen year old son over to help detain the man, and in this case it didn't go any further, which may not seems o bad assuming he actually is guilty. This sets an extremely bad precedent, if he is guilty of a relatively minor crime there's no need to risk a dangerous confrontation, or, if he's not guilty, of encouraging citizens to make false claims or arrests. If he really is a serious offender, this could easily escalate leading to more violence, and the police should have known this, if he's not, the police are violating innocent until proven guilty principles by encouraging vigilantism.
Walmart is literally getting dozens of online articles criticizing their self-checkout, receipt checks or other anti-theft policies, which are increasingly absurd. One recent variation is apparently when employees help at the checkout they've been trying to press the five star button for surveys, even though customers oppose this. One person asked around about this and some stores may be advising this to increase their survey results to an average of 4.6, which obviously defeats the purpose when you can't do this without getting caught. There are far more complaints about locking petty things up or reciept checks, even when there's no probable cause to suspect theft.
Once again card skimmers were found at Walmart in at least three states stealing customer data. Walmart has a history of refusing to take responsibility for securing their equipment, although some banks ensure against false charges. This is much more common at self-checkouts, yet it's rarely considered when deciding whether to keep using them, and customers aren't warned about this potential problem. Not only don't they take responsibility for fraud they enable, but they don't take responsibility for fraud or theft by employees they hire, train, and put in a position to steal, like a person Walmart hired to deliver a TV that stole it instead last month.
As usual there were also a variety of assaults, fights, including on police officers, scams trying to con people into buying gift cards and give them the information so they can steal the funds, and there was also a child rushed to the hospital for health reasons, in addition to the one that died.
In addition to the two people killed in accidents there were at least a dozen more major accidents, including one car crashing into the store causing five injuries as a result of medical issues, another pedestrian pinned under a car after being hit, a car that flipped over, an elderly driver hitting a couple pedestrians, several carjackings or stolen vehicles, including a stolen ambulance, chases and a variety of other crimes involving automobiles, not counting fender benders which are rarely reported and guaranteed to be much more common.
There was also one car fire; in addition to that car fire there were at least four other fires, three of which were all arson, two by juveniles. In addition to the person stabbed to death, there were over half a dozen other knife or machete attacks, stabbings, threats, domestic arguments, or robberies involving knives.
Walmart had at least another five or six recalls or reports of their products being dangerous including, thousands of baby swings that may cause suffocation, high chairs or booster seats, popular snacks that may have allergens, Starbucks mugs sold at Walmart causing injuries, and hoverboards that have been proven to be dangerous.
For some strange reason a couple people left wallets or money bags with $7,000 or $71,000 behind at Walmart and people returned it instead of stealing it, one of them claimed it was "God's call."
Just in case anyone cares, people in Auburn Maine have declared a Walmart pole a "Historical Landmark" because it's infamous for being hit dozens of times and making the local, and sometimes national news on the internet!
Another alligator was caught trying to shop at a Texas Walmart; I really don't see why they consider this a problem, animals have to eat and shop too.
The alligators aren't as bad as a man allegedly caught masturbating in a Florida Walmart and ejaculating on a woman, which is clearly worse than the one that allegedly kept his distance and submitted to a citizen's arrest.
Another Florida Walmart is where a woman was caught stealing and told the police it was part of a game called "21" and that it was lots of fun, perhaps until she got caught.
Strange things happen at Walmart, especially in Florida!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.
Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.
This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in March 2024. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Bellingham files lawsuit against owner of homeless camp near Walmart 03/01/2024
The City of Bellingham is now demanding cleanup of an entrenched homeless camp near Walmart through legal action.
After more than a year asking the owner to remove the camp on wooded property, the city on Feb. 23 filed a lawsuit against Li-Ching Fang, owner of the 20-acre undeveloped lot southeast of Walmart. Unhoused people have lived at the site for at least the past eight years, according to longtime camp residents.
The lawsuit seeks a judge’s order granting the city the authority to remove an estimated 50 to 150 illegal campers on the property, while clearing the site of drug-contaminated garbage, broken-down vehicles, dozens of shopping carts and contaminated soil.
Lower Spring Creek runs north to south through the middle of the property, which is designated as an environmental critical area with wetlands, the lawsuit states.
In addition to numerous tents visible in video taken at the site, camp residents have built more permanent structures using plywood and plastic, according to the lawsuit. Complete article

Walmart hit with federal fine for citronella candles shipped to Savannah, Charleston ports 03/06/2024
Walmart Inc. faces a $49,500 fine after the Environmental Protection Agency determined that labels on imported citronella candles offloaded at the ports of Savannah and Charleston did not include required safety instructions.
The ports were not a target of the investigation or suspected of any wrongdoing in the case.
Citronella has become a familiar feature in backyards, decks and porches for its purported mosquito-repelling power. As their chemical-tinged scent suggests, citronella candles differ from the traditional wax variety.
Federal law classifies citronella oil, which is distilled from a type of lemongrass, as an insecticide subject to strict regulations. That’s why federal law requires labels for products with citronella as an active ingredient to include specific safety instructions. Complete article

Thousands of baby swings sold at Walmart, Target and Amazon recalled due to suffocation risk 03/07/2024

The swings also do not meet the “mandatory warning requirements” regarding infant sleep. Complete article

Walmart closing stores, making big changes at 100s more 03/07/2024
Walmart has followed rival Target in closing stores due to what it sees as increased theft. Generally, these are stores in cities where shoplifting and organized crime appear to be bigger problems for the chain.
The retail giant closed 24 stores in 2023 across 14 states and Washington, D.C. That's up from the 15 closures the chain had planned. Walmart, like Target, has cited retail crime as contributing to its decision to close stores.
CEO Doug McMillon started banging this drum in December 2022. "Theft is an issue. It is higher than what it has historically been," he told CNBC. "If that's not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and/or stores will close."
It would be easy to dismiss McMillon's comments as political, but Brian Cornell his counterpart at Target, a company often painted as being left-leaning or woke, mirrors Walmart's (WMT) reasons for closing stores.
"In this case, we cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance," Target said in a news release. We know that our stores serve an important role in their communities, but we can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for all." Complete article

Walmarts in New York Quietly Eliminate Popular Coupon Policies 03/08/2024
Walmart is putting the brakes on some money saving practices that were popular with its customers.
Walmart has reported a spike in customers amid the pandemic and rising inflation. More people are turning to the retail chain to save money on groceries, clothes, appliances and more.
But with the rise in foot traffic comes some changes from the top because, as we all know all too well, we can't have nice things.
Shoppers who frequent the Utica, New Hartford, Oneida, Rome and other Walmarts in CNY should know the chain has shifted gears on its stance on coupons, which is odd to think since Walmart earned a reputation for being the most coupon-friendly chain in America. Complete article

Walmart Pole in Auburn, Maine, Now Deemed a 'Historical Landmark' 03/10/2024
To say life in Maine is slower than other places in the country is probably an understatement. People in the Pine Tree State go about their business every day, and for better or worse, not a lot happens in Maine. And that's ok.
But when something does happen and then keeps happening over and over again, people take notice. Especially when the thing that keeps happening over and over again doesn't make much sense to the majority of the population.
By now, we've all heard about the infamous yellow pole at the Walmart in Auburn, Maine. There have been far too many accidents with this inanimate object over the past several years. Some of those accidents have actually totaled vehicles.
The spotlight turned that yellow pole from famous to infamous. Just recently, another accident took place with the infamous yellow pole at Walmart. The parade of misadventures has led to global coverage, with claims the pole has been hit over 200 times. Complete article

These doors are locked and customers must call a member of staff to open the doors and retrieve an item for them.

Technology to take over manual jobs at Ottawa Kansas Walmart Distribution Center 03/08/2024
OTTAWA, Kan. (KCTV) - Technology is set to take over manual jobs at the Ottawa Walmart Distribution Center as associates are trained to care for and maintain new machinery.
Walmart Superstores announced on Thursday, March 7, that a multi-million dollar investment in high-tech automation is set to be brought to the regional distribution center in Ottawa. The move is part of the company’s broader initiative to renovate all 42 regional distribution centers as it continues to modernize its supply chain network.
Once the project is complete, Walmart said the distribution center will be able to ship nearly double the number of cases compared to a traditional center. Meanwhile, jobs that offer new skills in robotics and technology will replace the current manual jobs.
“Walmart’s Ottawa distribution center has been a pillar in our community for nearly 30 years. Adding robotics, automation and AI-powered software systems to this facility will revolutionize an already impressive operation, fundamentally changing the way we distribute products to stores,” said Tony Kildow, General Manager, Regional Distribution Center #6035, Walmart U.S. “This isn’t just an investment in our facility, but also in our associates, our community and our future.” Complete article

‘Now you have to pay to work for Walmart’: Customer says Walmart is now charging for self-checkout 03/15/2024
'My other local grocery stores are about to get a lot more business.'
Walmart shoppers may have noticed that their local stores have adjusted their self-checkout availability, blocking them off for access to Walmart+ and Spark shoppers only, while recommending that shoppers not using these programs utilize the staffed traditional checkout lanes instead.
One shopper claims that the closure of self-checkout to customers not subscribed to Walmart’s premium service, Walmart+, is intended to drive them to subscribe to it.
In the video posted to TikTok by content creator @educationincrime, she claims that the department store is essentially requiring customers to pay to use their self-checkout.
“If you didn’t think it was possible to hate going to Walmart more than you do now, surprise, I got something to tell you,” she says in the video. “Now, you got to pay to work for Walmart.” Complete article

STANDING FIRM ‘No receipt for you,’ declares Walmart shopper who refuses to comply with policy for a simple reason 03/16/2024
Doing the work themselves is not the experience shoppers want anymore.
ANOTHER shopper has spoken out about their perspective on receipt checks, expressing indignation at retailer expectations.
As retailers, big and small, grapple with strategies to reduce shoplifting while maintaining efficiency at the register, customer satisfaction is going by the wayside.
Many major retailers that offer self-checkout have added receipt checks as an anti-theft measure, expecting all shoppers to wait for employees to check their receipts against items in their cart before leaving.
Although this has been commonplace at establishments like Costco and Sam's Club for years, the ramping up of the process at retailers like Walmart and Target has customers up in arms.
Some shoppers have pointed out the lack of logic in retailers' choice to have receipt checkers, claiming that the store should just hire full-time cashiers and do away with self-checkout.
Until they do, many have made the decision to ignore retailer's requests to check receipts.
"I never to stop to show my receipt at Walmart," wrote one X user.
"Cause yall could’ve seen the damn receipt yourself if you were working at a register," they continued.
"But noooo I had to check myself out so no receipt for you." Complete article

‘It was not a 5-star experience’: Walmart shopper says worker intervened while she was self-checking out, pressed 5-star rating on machine 03/20/2024
'They absolutely tell the front end people to pick 5 stars.'
Self-checkouts have been a major area of controversy as of late, with many internet users going viral after sharing their unpleasant experiences using the machines. For example, one user claimed they were asked to tip on a self-checkout; another said that their local Walmart had begun shutting down self-checkouts.
Now, another user’s unfortunate self-checkout experience has sparked discussion—however, this time, their complaints can be attributed to an employee rather than the machine.
In a video with over 85,000 views, TikTok user Katie (@kelyons1206) says that she was using a self-checkout machine when she was prompted to rate her experience. Before she could offer a rating, she was approached by an employee.
“A Walmart employee comes up to me before I can even grab my bag and just taps the five stars,” she recounts. “Like, what? And he just goes, ‘This was a five stars.’”
“It was not a five-star experience,” the TikToker added. “And why are you tapping five stars when I did not tap five stars?”
The TikToker then questioned whether this move was pushed on employees by store management.
“Walmart, are you telling your employees to automatically tap five stars even when the customer says that it was not five stars?” she asks. “If you are, I feel like that’s really illegal and really morally wrong.”
This TikToker isn’t the first to note this apparent pressure from Walmart management. According to an October 2023 story from Business Insider, “Two Walmart associates told Insider that the pressure to have each customer fill out the survey came from store managers. Stores are supposed to aim for an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars, the two employees told Insider. Store managers receive an annual bonus depending on the rating, they said.” Complete article

Slip-and-Fall Trial Begins Over Pothole in Walmart Parking Lot, Watch Online Via CVN 03/20/2024
San Diego, CA- A California state court jury heard opening statements Tuesday in lawsuit filed by a woman blaming a fall that she claims required her to undergo spinal fusion surgery on a pothole in a Walmart parking lot, and the full trial is being recorded gavel-to-gavel by Courtroom View Network.
Plaintiff Kathy Morrow fell outside a San Diego-area Walmart in February 2020 and allegedly suffered multiple herniated discs in the accident. Her lawsuit blames the fall on a half-inch deep pothole just behind a parking space that she alleges was concealed by a shadow cast by a nearby car.
Her attorney, Jonathan Kwan of South Coast Trial Lawyers, told jurors that although Walmart’s internal procedures required daily sweeps of all store property, including the parking lot, that the pothole was not reported and no steps were taken to repair it. Complete article

Near the 1900 block of South Market Street, the semi-truck struck another vehicle, failing to stop. The semi continued into Oskaloosa, losing parts of several tires. The semi continued northbound through the city, failing to obey the traffic signals throughout town.
An Oskaloosa Police Unit located the semi near the 2400 block of North Market Street, still traveling northbound. Upon activating the emergency lights and sirens behind this vehicle, it failed to stop for the officer. Members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol assisted with attempting to stop this vehicle. The semi-truck continued northbound on Highway 63 until it reached the 2000 block, near the South Skunk River. At this location, the semi became disabled and was unable to continue traveling.
Members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office then removed the driver from the vehicle. The driver was identified as 64-year-old Ricky Allen Brown of Richland, Missouri. It was determined that Mr. Brown was suffering from a medical condition. An ambulance was called to the scene of this traffic stop and Mr. Brown was taken to the Mahaska Health hospital, where he was stabilized. Is Walmart screwing customers? Former Secretary of Labor says so 03/24/2024
Robert Reich, Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton and a member of the administrations of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, has accused Walmart of “price gouging.”
On Saturday, he tweeted: “Walmart hiked prices on its Great Value food brands. The result? Its net income spiked 93% to $10.5 billion toward the end of 2023. Walmart rewarded shareholders with $5.9 billion in buybacks and dividends. When I say price gouging is driving inflation, this is what I mean.”
Reich, in previous essays, has written: “Businesses have been using the cover of inflation to justify price increases, so consumers accept them.” He adds that inflation hasn’t been being propelled by an overheated economy. “It’s being propelled by overheated profits.” Complete article

Antitrust expert takes aim at Walmart, food suppliers in new book 03/26/2024
“Barons” highlights negative impacts of consolidation in the food industry.
A new book by Austin Frerick, an antitrust specialist at Yale University, takes aim at seven large companies in the food industry, including Walmart and six of the world’s largest food suppliers.
The book — “Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of the Food Industry” — focuses on the negative impacts that Frerick alleges these companies have on society, by virtue of their consolidated power. To a large extent, he blames the policies that have allowed these companies to amass their wealth and influence.
“A set of legal and policy changes driven by a radical laissez-faire ideology has resulted in a dramatic concentration of power in the food industry,” he writes in the book’s introduction. “This book is about how that transformation occurred and what it has meant for workers, families, and communities.”
The concentration of industrial hog farming in Iowa, for example, is “a big reason” why 61% of the state’s rivers and 67% of its reservoirs “do not meet basic water quality standards,” Frerick writes. Complete article

Hidden costs, public burden: The real toll of Walmart's "always low prices" 03/27/2024
Instead of paying a living wage to their employees, taxpayers are footing the bill.
Walmart is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, just a few miles from Sam Walton’s first Walmart store in Rogers. Although Walmart currently operates out of a nondescript building that doesn’t seem to match its power and scale, the company is in the midst of building a massive new corporate headquarters on the east side of town. The new offices are designed in the style of a college campus, with twelve buildings spread over 350 acres, and with a price tag estimated to be $1 billion.
Bentonville is sometimes called Vendorville because its economy is built around Walmart and all its vendors. I’ve visited Bentonville several times over the years. I first popped in on a whim in 2018 after attending an agriculture show in Little Rock. It’s a charming town of over fifty thousand people that struck me as something out of "The Truman Show." During most of the twentieth century, the town’s population hovered around two thousand to three thousand people, but it exploded in tandem with the growth of Walmart.
In an ironic twist, Bentonville captures the Main Street, USA imagery that Sam Walton’s Supercenters helped destroy in other towns across the country. Whereas most small-town squares in America are in a state of decay, Bentonville’s is the only one I’ve ever seen with James Beard finalist restaurants next to offices for national brands. Leaked Emails: Walmart Tech Outages Average Twice a Week 03/28/2024
Walmart's internal systems had more than a dozen "major incidents" in the last two months alone.
Sixteen of these major incidents occurred in the first eight weeks of the company's fiscal year, which started on February 1, according to a de-brief memo sent by Walmart's senior technology leaders to staffers in the department and viewed by Business Insider.
"Major incidents" are issues that interfere with business operations and impact revenue, according to a person familiar with the situation, who asked to remain anonymous so they could speak freely and whose identity BI has confirmed. An additional two major incidents occurred this past weekend, the person said.
Walmart's global technology platform runs the retailer's core business operations, including in-store point-of-sale systems, e-commerce, and distribution and fulfillment centers. Internal emails obtained by BI show that Walmart's business is interrupted by issues with its global tech platform at a far more frequent rate than previously reported. Complete article

FTC rips Kroger, Walmart for pricing actions during Covid-19 pandemic 03/27/2024
The Federal Trade Commission slammed Kroger Co., Walmart and other large grocery companies in a new report for making the negative effects of the Covid pandemic and supply chain issues worse for consumers than they needed to be.
The FTC’s report, titled “Feeding America in a Time of Crisis: FTC Staff Report on The United States Grocery Supply Chain and the Covid-19 Pandemic,” found that large grocery companies increased prices more than they typically have relative to their costs and received favorable product allocations from suppliers.
“The report revealed that large market participants accelerated and distorted the negative effects associated with supply chain disruptions,” FTC officials said in a news release.
The problems weren’t limited to the Covid pandemic’s early days in 2020 and 2021.
“Consumers are still facing the negative impact of the pandemic’s price hikes, as the commission’s report finds that some in the grocery retail industry seem to have used rising costs as an opportunity to further raise prices to increase their profits, which remain elevated today,” the FTC said. Chick-fil-A, Walmart, 7-Eleven could soon use drones to deliver your food. Here’s how it works 03/2/2024
New drone ‘ecosystem’ set to roll out in select markets later this year.
Three popular retailers will be the first to pilot new technology that could help solve the problems with drone deliveries, according to Axios earlier this week.
Axios reports that the three companies — Walmart, 7-Eleven and Chick-fil-A — are using the tech from a Virginia startup company called “DroneUp,” which would address issues with ground logistics.
“Getting a drone to deliver a hot chicken sandwich or a cold Slurpee in a matter of minutes depends a lot more on what happens on the ground than what occurs in the sky,” the report reads.
On Tuesday, DroneUp reportedly showcased a new autonomous drone “ecosystem” that involves a climate-controlled storage locker, which is where the drone can pick up and drop off packages. Complete article
