Walmart Crime Report November 2023

Walmart had at least sixteen more shootings in November 2023, with at least four of them fatal killing five people; one of these was a murder suicide and another was classified as a mass shooting, since the gun man shot and injured four people before killing himself, but his victims survived, although three of them were critically injured, with one of those improving after a few days. There was also an armed carjacking at Walmart where the suspect previously shot and killed another victim, but that was before he went to Walmart, and no shots were fired at Walmart. In addition to the deaths in these shootings there were also at least a dozen more injuries, including the four injuries from the mass shooting incident. At least one of these shootings was aimed at children, although they weren't hit, another two were accidental, one by a child where no one was hit in either, another shooting was targeting a security guard, and at least one of the shooters was still at large, but most of the shooters were caught, and they may have caught that one since the shooting.

There was also an execution of a shooter that killed a girl outside a Texas Walmart in 2001, and a lawsuit claiming that Walmart was partly responsible for a fatal shooting last May. They certainly have more than their share of shootings, with over a hundred for each of the previous eight years, including this one, and dozens of deaths each year from these shootings, yet there's little or no effort to find out why Walmart has so many shootings. There were also at least a few more gun related crimes at their store, but not as many as they usually report. Hopefully this is because the gun crimes are going down, but it may be ore likely that the media and Google isn't reporting on them as well as they used to, and there's a massive increase in advertisements made to look like news articles flooding Google or other search engines supporting this assumption, along with the fact that we know there are many more crimes than are widely reported.

In addition to the five people killed in shootings there were also two people killed in vehicle accidents, one person that allegedly stabbed himself to death when he was caught shoplifting, a baby that was unresponsive after an unknown medical problem which killed him and two more bodies found on their premises, for a total of eleven deaths, not counting the death of a person elsewhere that later committed an armed carjacking at Walmart. There was also a problem where several parents thought their children would die when they got sick inside their store, and it was unclear what was making them sick.

There are also a growing number of skimming devises being found on various Walmart stores collecting private data, which Walmart doesn't insure, although some banks might. These were found in at least three states last month and often several of them in each case. They're more likely to be placed on self-checkout registers which aren't attended as well, but some have been found on traditional registers.

One man was convicted for putting razor blades on shopping carts at a location that was allegedly intended to cut unsuspecting customers, and sentenced to twenty years. This is a much bigger problem than most people realize, but in most cases the intent isn't to hurt people, but to cut packaging without being noticed while shoplifting. There have been numerous stories about this over the years, but little effort to report about how common this is, or warn customers, yet some police departments are aware of it. Could they be remaining silent to avoid panic and protect profits?

Another man was arrested for trying to abduct a child at Walmart. A bystander was injured while trying to prevent shoplifting at one store; I can't imagine why people would be concerned about poor people stealing from the rich, especially when the rich won't reward them, and might even support criminal charges for vigilantes if they go to far, as they have in the past. Corporate executives only care about profit and they don't care about their own customers or safety unless it impacts profit. There was also another two suspect fighting with police, one that pepper sprayed a deputy; another that sucker-punched an elderly person who was caught; and there was a suspect in a domestic assault at Walmart that was arrested after a two hour stand-off.

In a growing number of cases Walmart loss-prevention officers are spending an enormous amount of time searching through security video trying to find petty thefts. In one case last month they arrested a mother of a worker caught shoplifting at their store, who also worked there, because she took a "sudden leave of absence" that aroused "suspicions," and searched videos for skip-scanning. In many other cases, if they catch a skip-scanner using credit or debit cards they'll check for previous purchases and check videos on them as well to prosecute people as much as possible and seek reparations. This is partly done with tax-payer money for police and courts, even though they don't take actions to reduce theft like cutting back on self-checkout, although that might finally change soon.

Some shoppers in Colorado came to the conclusion that Black Friday deals, assuming they're actually better than other prices, not marked up to mark down, aren't worth the brawl, saying "People used to die getting trampled in the entrance of a Walmart!" This is true, and brawls or riots haven't completely gone away, but they don't seem quite as common as they did about ten years ago. Part of this might be that the media isn't reporting on it as well so it's just not being reported, but it is probably partly true, although one Alabama article indicates holiday crime is going back up again.

But, even if there has been a reduction in holiday riots or brawls related to Black Friday, why? What caused it? Has there been research on it? I have no doubt that there has, but I can't find it on the internet, even though I tried. On one occasion Walmart did a study that showed crime could be reduced if they had a security guard monitor the parking lot, but instead of doing this they tried to suppress the study, which they considered proprietary, but it was leaked and disclosed in "The High Cost of Low Price," showing they do studies like that and may only act on them when they increase profits.

Even without a traditional study by academics there are some conclusions I can draw based on several events, including the so-called "Uncommercials" that Ad Busters tried to run about twenty years ago. They still run some of them on their own web site and some people spread them on Social Media; but when they tried to buy traditional ads for a "Buy Nothing Day" on Black Friday most media outlets refused to sell them, because it would offend their other advertisers and decrease profits for both them and their advertisers. About five to ten years after they refused to air these "Buy Nothing" ads there was a large surge in riots, brawls, shootings and many other crimes, including at least one stampede that killed at least one person and injured many more. While this was happening there were many deceptive ads, which often angered people, but even though shoppers could be charged with crimes for acting out Walmart and other deceptive advertisers were never held accountable for inciting these riots or creating an environment that increased violence, nor was there research that might confirm this, which is almost guaranteed to be true. Despite the lack of public research they did change their advertising practices, including ads promoting "Black Friday deals" for two whole months, which may have meant that the high crime was over two months instead of being heavily concentrated on Black Friday weekend.

Even without a study there's no doubt that our economic system is increasing crime, and this hasn't completely gone away. They only changed their tactics when it reduce profits, but there's no doubt that better research will show it's still causing a lot of unnecessary crime!

In addition to the two fatal accidents, one into a pond, the other near the store, there were close to half a dozen more major accidents, if not much more that weren't widely reported, car or motorcycle thefts, carjackings, hit and runs, and major injuries from crashes. There were also at least eight fires, with at least two of them arson, and most of the remaining are inconclusive, but at least a couple were probably accidental. One of the Arson fires was at the same store in Beavercreek Ohio where there was a mass shooting two and a half weeks later. They also had a suspect that allegedly stabbed his wife in the legs outside their store. There were also numerous assaults, threats, stalking incidents, robberies, thefts, and who knows how many other crimes, which are too common to keep track of.

Walmart had at least two more recalls as well, of eye drops that are potentially harmful, and fruit that might have deadly Listeria. The U.N. has even expressed outrage over "shameful" wages and union-busting. And they've been annoying a lot of people trying to get them to fill out questionnaires, which customers aren't sure is required when going through the self-check out, possibly eliminating what little benefit there might be from them.

The media is finally reporting on enormous amounts of evidence showing how much trouble self-checkout is causing and there's even some discussion about scaling back on it, but they're still very slow to put cashiers back. Walmart is now agreeing to pay customers that were scammed from gift cards with no funds on them, but at least some of the reports about this indicate that they may only do this when they were able to freeze the funds stolen, not necessarily refunding for thefts where the scam artists got away with the goods or funds. In other words they still aren't taking responsibility for securing their cards.

How often do you get caught using counterfeit bills, intentionally or not?

If so, do you try to eat the counterfeit money?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Eye drops sold at Walmart added to FDA’s list of potentially harmful products 11/02/2023

Eye drops sold at Walmart are being added to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) list of potentially dangerous products.

Consumers are now being told to avoid the Equate Hydration PF Lubricant Eye Drop 10 mL, which is already being removed from Walmart store shelves and its online marketplace, due to the potential risk of eye infections that could lead to partial or complete vision loss, according to an updated notice from the FDA.

Last week, federal health regulators first warned consumers to either avoid or throw out 26 other products that were meant to treat dry or irritated eyes after an investigation revealed that there were “insanitary conditions” in the manufacturer’s facility, potentially contaminating the products that are intended to be sterile.

There were also positive bacterial test results from environmental sampling of critical drug production areas in the facility, the FDA Complete article

Contaminated eye drops from Walmart, CVS and Target linked to factory in India where workers reportedly went barefoot and faked safety checks 11/10/2023 The report cites unsanitary conditions in the factory, such as workers being barefoot in the facility and falsifying test results so that the products made there appeared to be safe, according to the news site. The FDA has banned the Kilitch factory from shipping any more of its eye drops to the U.S. The FDA also asked the factory to recall its eye drops, but it has not done so yet.

UN blasts Amazon, Walmart, DoorDash for ‘shameful’ wages and union-busting 11/02/2023

The UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights has called on the CEOs of Amazon, Walmart and DoorDash and the US government to address allegations that top US corporations pay such low wages that they trap workers in poverty, forcing them to rely on government-assistance programs to survive.

Olivier De Schutter has written to the three major US corporations and the US government, requesting responses to numerous allegations. They include a 2020 US Government Accountability Office report that found Amazon and Walmart were listed among the top 25 employers with workers relying on the supplemental nutrition assistance rogram (Snap), formerly known as food stamps, or Medicaid in nine states studied, with Walmart ranked first and Amazon ranked sixth.

“The concerns apply to many workers in the US, which relates to how the minimum wage is set in legislation, whether at federal or state level, wage theft by employers, unpredictable yet inflexible working schedules, the sake of undocumented workers, violation of union rights, and automation, these are the most important issues that apply across the workforce in the US,” the letter said.

De Schutter said that his major concerns were the US minimum wage, wage theft by employers, unpredictable yet inflexible working schedules, the plight of undocumented workers, the violation of union rights and automation.

“What these companies do for the most part is not illegal. What they do is use the loopholes in the system – for example, misclassifying workers as independent contractors rather than employees. There are many loopholes in the system that the US government is still responsible for and I’m still expecting an answer from the Department of Labor,” said De Schutter. Complete article

I tried Walmart's self-checkout to see if it was as frustrating as some shoppers say. Here's what I found. 11/01/2023

Ever since we published a story about Walmart's missed-scan detection technology in its self-checkout kiosks, my email inbox has had a steady stream of responses from frustrated customers.

While the system is designed to spot potential cases of shoplifting , customers say it has incorrectly (and embarrassingly) flagged them as suspicious when in fact, they are doing nothing wrong.

In short, if the array of sensors and cameras on the company's self-service kiosks detects certain actions, the station pauses the transaction and summons an employee to assist.

After I spoke with a few out of the dozens of customers, I came to understand a bit more about how the system works and some of the typical check-out actions that trip its alarm. Complete article

Amazon punished its own sellers to limit Walmart's reach, FTC says 11/02/2023

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc punished its own sellers to limit Walmart's reach as Walmart got into e-commerce, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

In addition to making $1 billion by using a secret algorithm called "Project Nessie" to push up the prices that U.S. households pay, Amazon may have also succeeded in curbing Walmart's ambitions.

In 2014, the arrival of Jet.com triggered fear at Amazon that Jet.com would be able to offer shoppers lower prices online, the FTC said on Thursday, kick-starting Amazon's strategy of removing sellers’ offers from the Buy Box if shoppers could find the same products at lower prices on Jet.com. The Buy Box is the button that allows shoppers to make a purchase directly from a seller.

Walmart acquired Jet.com in 2016. Complete article

The Long Reach of the Walmart-Walton Empire 11/01/2023

Walmart’s annual revenues are larger than the GDP of Sweden; its founding family are prolific philanthropists. Their nexus is poorly understood.

In 2005, Walmart needed a war room. Under fire by union-organized critics of its wages, health insurance, and working conditions, the company recruited former presidential advisors to a public relations headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Theirs was a battle plan to fortify a wounded image.

The objects of the campaign were consumers then torn between American ideals and the lowest of low prices. Those whose position was still malleable were centered in the crosshairs of new messaging. They were the coveted middle of the market—the undecided shopper—and the objective was to turn them away from a marketplace of alternatives back to a Walmart. The odds were long. Every day opponents were gaining ground in casting Walmart as a small-business-wrecking behemoth whose day-to-day operations were antithetical to a pro-labor ethos. Complete article

Walmart managers are going to extreme lengths to get customers to complete the retailer's checkout survey. It's confusing shoppers and workers. 11/01/2023

For Walmart customers and employees, it's proving a source of confusion and annoyance.

Some customers have posted on social media platforms complaining that it's unclear what the survey is meant to evaluate, particularly when customers are asked to evaluate their satisfaction after a self-checkout experience.

Walmart has a shady way to prevent theft Kroger, Target don't use 11/06/2023

Theft has always been a problem in retail.

Some people shoplift because they're criminals while others steal because they're hungry and don't have the money to buy what they need. ....

Theft issues have not been helped by self-checkout. Taking cashiers out of the checkout process makes it easier for people to intentionally "forget" to scan a few items while having plausible deniability that their actions were a legitimate mistake.

That's compounded by people who were not trying to shoplift but truly miss scanning an item. ....

Once the "pause" button is hit, the self-checkout station goes into what looks like an error mode or your screen will freeze.

"At that point, you have no choice but to call for help and once we come over we pretend like something is wrong with the machine," she added.

"[Obviously,] there's nothing wrong with the machine because we paused your transaction on purpose, but we suspect that you're stealing, so we're trying to make it seem like there's something wrong with the machine." Complete article

Jessie James Stinnett allegedly positioned the blades with their edges pointed down, presumably so they would cut anyone who used them

A Georgia man was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he was found to have placed razor blades on the handles of Walmart shopping carts on at least two separate occasions.

On New Year's Eve last year, Jessie James Stinnett, 47, roamed through Walmart with a shopping cart before heading to the hardware section, according to Chattanooga station WTVC.

While out of view of security cameras, Stinnett removed razor blades from their packaging and placed one under the plastic wrapping of the cart's handle. Complete article (Placing razors on the handles is common practice for shoplifter who use them to open packages, then leave them there without regard for who it might hurt. If this was done to intentionally hurt people, as this article indicates, without using them for shoplifting, this is rare. But those doing it for shoplifting are more dangerous, since they do it much more often.)

Walmart's anti-theft technology creates a new set of problems 11/1/2023

Nobody likes being accused of theft. That includes people who are actually thieves, but their feelings aren't all that important since they’re actually stealing,

The problem — and it's a big one — is that many of the ways retailers fight theft make honest customers feel like criminals. That starts with small things like Walmart (WMT) - and Costco Wholesale (COST) - employees checking your receipts when you leave their stores.

Yes, they do it to everyone, but it's still not a pleasant feeling for honest folks worried that they may have missed or improperly scanned an item at self-checkout. It gets uglier, however, when companies use sneaker techniques to cut down theft, specifically at self-checkout.

In Walmart's case, the retailer has technology that allows a store associate to shut off a self-checkout. The worker is not supposed to tell the customer that they're suspected of theft. Instead, the worker is to pretend that it's a technical problem. Complete article

Retail-theft expert has an answer for Walmart, Target and Kroger 11/25/2023

Retailers face a number of problems that explain why they have added self-checkout lanes, but that effort may not be the answer to theft.

Retailers want to spend the least amount of money to drive the best possible customer experiences.

The challenge comes in that saving money often means fewer workers and replacing checkout clerks with self-checkout.

Not having a person scanning customer purchases does save money, at least in wages, but also comes with problems, according to Grabango Chief Executive Will Glaser.

"Self-checkout machines are a huge driver of shrink, with losses totaling 3.5% of sales — or more than 16 times more than traditional cashiers," according to data from Glaser's company, the Berkeley, Calif., shopping-technology-software provider. Complete article

Walmart has an old-school answer to retail theft and shoplifting 11/27/2023

Over the past few years, a number of major retail CEOs have talked about the growing impact of retail theft. The CEOs of Target, Walgreens, and Walmart have all made it seem like rising theft has been a massive issue that's dragging down their bottom lines.

In many cases, they talk about organized retail crime (ORC), which the National Retail Federation defines as "the large-scale theft of retail merchandise with the intent to resell the items for financial gain."

Instead of customers sticking an item in their pocket, hiding it under a coat, or bagging items not scanned at self-checkout, ORC is more sinister.

"ORC typically involves a criminal enterprise employing a group of individuals who steal large quantities of merchandise from a number of stores and a fencing operation that converts the stolen goods into cash," the NRF shared. Complete article
