Ignoring Causes of Violence Threatens Democracy & Costs Lives

Just about everyone in the country knew when there was a mass-shooting killing eighteen people last month in Maine, but there was very little coverage about the fact that in the local area many people were ordered to "shelter-in-place" and it's possible that they could have been charged with a crime for normal everyday activities, in a state of virtual martial law. This was reported briefly when it was lifted, Maine officials lift shelter-in-place order as search for mass shooting suspect continues 10/27/2023, but few people knew about this outside of Maine, even in neighboring states. There was a similar situation in Pennsylvania when Danilo Cavalcante escaped and was on the run for two weeks, as reported by many sources including Escaped Pennsylvania killer Danilo Cavalcante taken into custody after he was subdued by a police dog. 09/13/2023 However, once again, there were few reports about possible violations of rights of citizens, although if you watched closely during the obsession coverage you might have seen the police pulling people over and searching their cars during that period, a possible violation of fourth amendment rights, which are no longer well enforced, assuming they ever were.

The most extreme example, at least that I can remember in recent history, was after the Boston Bombing about ten years ago, when some people warned that it could be a greater danger including In marathon bombing's aftermath, martial law is greatest threat (Column) 04/24/2013, but this has been mostly forgotten. That case, plus the escaped convicted murderer both involved foreign policy indirectly. The Boston Bombing was incited by mass murder of Muslims in other countries angering immigrants; and the escaped murderer came from Brazil, where he committed his first murder, which was an exceptionally violent country with high murder rates, partly because of our foreign policy history, which has overthrown many Democratic governments. However, the vast majority of mass murders or other panic situations are domestic mass murders or other crimes; and whether it's related to foreign policy or not, we have good credible research showing how to make these incidents much less likely without resorting to controversial activities that threaten our rights. Unfortunately even though this research is in alternative media, books that get very little promotion, or academic journals, they're almost never covered in mainstream media or used to make policy decisions that could make these panic situation much less likely.

Now there's increased panic about possible "terrorist attacks" as reported in FBI Director Christopher Wray warns Congress of terror threats inspired by Hamas' attack on Israel 10/31/2023 which says "Washington — FBI Director Chris Wray warned Congress Tuesday that Hamas' terror attacks on Israel could motivate threats similar to those posed by ISIS in years past, according to law enforcement assessments, but he cautioned there is no indication Hamas itself intends to or has the capacity to conduct attacks in the U.S." This warning was repeated again numerous times in the past few days as well as similar warnings when our government has been involved in wars abroad for decades.

So far it's been very rare for these terrorist attacks to materialize, although most of the public often trusts our government when they stir up panic, and there have been a few exceptions, most notably the 9/11/2001 attack, which we weren't warned about, and many much smaller attacks, including the Boston Bombing, the San Bernadino mass shooting, the Orlando mass shooting, and a few others, but if you search through lists of mass shootings those inspired by foreign military engagements make up a small fraction of them.If anything, it should be surprising that these retaliation attacks aren't much more common; because, although those relying on traditional media might not know it, all the wars we've been involved in since World War II, if not ever, have been based on lies, and our victims know it. On top of that there have been dozens of coups supported by our government since World War II, mostly involving the CIA, and in many cases they've lead to death squads within the countries overthrown partly by the CIA. A few of the most widely known are Iraq 1953, Guatemala 1954, Congo 1960-1, and Chile 1972. These were all followed by tyrannical governments that terrorized their own people, while helping American corporations increase profits, and there are many more that didn't get as much attention, especially in mainstream media.

One of the most important things we need to protect democracy is accurate information about important issues, which we don't have in this country, at least not from traditional media that most people rely on. Fortunately other sources are available, although most people never heard of them, including the fact that we fight all wars based on lies and that our country does fight wars abroad to defend democracy at all, including the conflict in Israel, and the most important causes of violence at home, both of which I covered in at least a couple previous articles and will cover more below.

And for more reliable information about these wars based on lies there are many books exposing them that get no promotion from traditional media, often that are available free online like "Killing Hope" by William Blum 2003, which lists a large number of undemocratic interventions in foreign countries against the will of local people, and often leading to death squads terrorizing the people; Vincent Bevins "The Jakarta Method" 2020, which covers some of the same coups in more detail showing how countries in South America imitated tactics in Jakarta Indonesia; Kwame Nkrumah, "Neo-Colonialism, The Last Stage of Imperialism" 1965; which describes how former Colonialist powers changed their tactics and instead of occupying countries themselves arranged for puppet leaders in their place, and often staged fake elections to make them look democratic; James Carroll "House of War" 2006 describing how the author was raised in a military family, a son of a General, and came to the realization that our government wasn't defending freedom, but corporate power, and wrote about inciting wars relentlessly; Alan Friedman "Spider's Web" 1993, which exposes how the Reagan/Bush administrations armed Iraq, with the help of the United Kingdom, Italy, and an Italian Bank, providing the funds and weapons used to invade Kuwait creating an unnecessary war; and "The Merchants of Death" H. C. Engelbrecht and F. C. Hanighen 1937, which is a classic exposing how weapons manufacturers set the stage for a constant state of war putting profits ahead of lives, peace and Democracy. All these books are now available free online, and get almost no media promotion from mainstream news, yet they do a much better job explaining the history of war and how to avoid it than MSM, which is essentially a corporate propaganda organization supporting war when wealthy people profit from it. And of course, there are many more good books besides them, which don't get promoted by traditional media, although they're not all available free.

A few other good books include Susan Williams "White Malice" 2021, which describes the coup in Congo as well as several other conflicts in Africa and Neo-Colonialism practices; Tom Burgis "The Looting Machine" 2015 which also describes Neo-Colonialism and the looting of Africa; and Central America's Forgotten History: Revolution, Violence, and the Roots of Migration 2021 by Aviva Chomsky, which also describes Neo-Colonialism in Central America, although she uses the term Neo-Liberalism, and she explains how it lead to our immigration problems and their high rates of violence and crime even after wars end, which were caused by intervention from our country. Her Amazon description says "Focusing on the valiant struggles for social and economic justice in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras, Chomsky restores these vivid and gripping events to popular consciousness. Tracing the roots of displacement and migration in Central America to the Spanish conquest and bringing us to the present day, she concludes that the more immediate roots of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras lie in the wars and in the US interventions of the 1980s and the peace accords of the 1990s that set the stage for neoliberalism in Central America."

Aviva Chomsky's book is important in several ways because in addition to reporting on intervention by the United States in Central America she also explains how overthrowing democratic governments, or in some cases, trying to do so, leads to much higher rates of violence and crime which also contributes to the high number of immigrants from Central America. Once you understand this, you can look at the political activities in many more countries, especially those in the Americas south of the border and recognize the same pattern applies to them as well, in a few occasions, those that did the best job standing up to intervention by the United States, are the least violent, relatively speaking. According to Wikipedia: List of countries by intentional homicide rate almost all the countries with the highest murder rates are former colonies of European countries, or suffered from intervention by the United States, or in many cases both, especially in the Americas. One of the least violent countries in the Americas is Cuba, which is the country most successful at preventing US control of their economy. Nicaragua also overthrew their puppet governors, the Samozas, and even though it's more violent than Cuba it's less violent than the majority of the Americas south of the border, and Bolivia, which recently had several progressive governments, including by Evo Morales, and after the 2019 coup was reversed another of his allies, is even less violent than Cuba, and only a handful of small countries plus Canada, which has a much better health care, education system, and many other social programs than any other country in the Americas, including the United States, are less violent than Bolivia; and even though the United States isn't as violent as most of the countries they intervened in, which have fewer social services than the United States, the USA still has higher murder rates than about fourteen countries in the Americas, including a few they intervened in. Since there's evidence showing that our intervention is a contributing factor in high rates of violence south of the border that implies that it's indirectly responsible for the violence in Brazil, possibly including Danelo Cavalcante, who caused the panic in Pennsylvania in September.

In most cases the same root causes of violence effect all cultures, although some of the details vary. Many countries in Europe do a much better job addressing them, and most of them aren't related to foreign intervention, at least not in Europe any more. But, here in the United States, and the countries south of the border the intervention of the United States has a major impact. Some of this also impacts our own country, with veterans who are more likely to be involved in mass shootings, which could lead to panic situations where the police infringe on our rights in cases of emergency, as David Swanson helps point out. David Swanson has been tracking the percentage of mass shooters that were also military veterans, since 2017, based on a Mother Jones’ database, which was not created for this purpose, but based on shootings that killed three or more people, which is more stringent than other definitions where a mass shooting is one that kills or injures four or more people, in most cases not killing anyone. His latest article on the subject Washington Post Reports on Gun Suicides and Veterans, Still Refuses to Mention Veterans and Mass Shootings 10/31/2023 points out that 40 out of 127 mass shootings that meet this criteria, counting only shooters between the age of 18 and 59, are veterans, which now comes to 31% of the population, even though veterans only make up about a quarter of that percentage of the population in that age range. When it comes to people over sixty the percentage is much higher, of course. Swanson points out that when he first tracked this it was 34% of mass shooters and rose to 36% of the population before dropping to 31% of the population, but the percent of the population that are veterans is dropping faster than the percentage of mass shooters who are veterans.

However, mass shootings are only a fraction of all shootings or murders, although they're much more likely to result in panic situations where police infringe on people's civil rights. David Swanson has pointed out that few if any other organizations, including Mother Jones, tries to study this, which I've found is mostly true when I did my own research into the subject almost ten years ago when I wrote States with high murder rates have larger veteran populations and Teach a soldier to kill and he just might, both of which used the best research available that I could find at the time as well as some additional research of my own, including a long list of murders by veterans. David Swanson rightfully points out that some of the mass shooters might have been veterans even though he wasn't able to document them; however, most mass shooters get much more attention than lower profile murders, often killing family members or other veterans, so it's unlikely that he missed many, but it's virtually guaranteed that many more than I found were also veteran murders, since the media doesn't report on most murders nearly as thorough as mass shootings.

As I said, it's very rare for big institutions to study this, for one reason or another, but there have been a few exceptions, which I covered in the articles cited in the previous paragraph, including "Lethal Warriors," a series of newspaper articles which was turned into a book by David Philips; another series of articles by the New York Times where they collected articles of over a hundred veterans arrested for murder in a short period of time, but by their own admission was far from complete, so it couldn't be used for statistical purposes; and one of two statistical studies by The Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics comparing the percentage of prisons that were veterans, which they found to be somewhat low, at least in the headlines about the studies, but as I explained in my previous articles the actual reports found some flaws with those headlines, and I found several more, including preferential treatment for veterans enabling them to get shorter sentences, and the fact that most veterans are recruited from rural areas that are much less violent and most murders are much more likely to happen in abandoned inner cities.

If the veteran murders that I found were complete, which it certainly isn't, then it might have shown that if you compared veteran rates with murder rates then veterans might have been less likely to commit murder than non-veterans, but only modestly. Since it's not complete or peer reviewed this isn't a guarantee; but if it were then it would almost certainly show that veterans are more likely to commit murder than non-veterans throughout the country; however, since veterans are mostly recruited from less violent rural areas, if you compare the rates with those areas the difference would almost certainly be much higher. This is all the more reason why the academic world, FBI and military should do a more thorough study; but there's little chance they will, because they probably suspect the results and don't want to report on this problem, avoiding the conclusion that wars abroad are a contributing factor to violence at home, which I have no doubt is true.

This is just one of many contributing causes to violence which makes these panic situations more likely; and there's plenty of research showing what the other factors are, but they've virtually never reported in traditional media, nor is the best research used to make policy decisions by politicians; instead policy decisions seem to be made based on flawed beliefs by politicians or their campaign donors, which also enrich campaign donors increasing income inequality, which is one of the leading causes for violence. One of the most important contributing factors of violence, which I've covered repeatedly, is early child abuse including the use of corporal punishment which correlates with other forms of violence. In one of my previous articles Research On Preventing Violence Absent From National Media I pointed out the fact that the states that still allow corporal punishment in schools, and for the most part use it more at home as well, always have had higher murder rates than those not using it, going back to at least 1991, based on FBI crime rates. In 1992 there was only about a 2% difference; this rose steadily until breaking a record in 2019 with a rate of 6.07 per 100,000 in states that still allow corporal punishment compared to only 4,22 in states not allowing it. Other academic researchers, who I've cited in past articles, have also confirmed that child abuse and corporal punishment teaches violence later in life. In the vast majority of cases children abused or receiving corporal punishment don't immediately resort to violence, but they do learn to use it more later in life, which explains the higher murder rates. In most cases rates of violence seem to decline five to fifteen years after banning corporal punishment in schools and the longer it's banned the lower rates of violence they have, but this isn't the only contributing factor of violence, of course.

Other major contributing causes of violence often have a major impact on abandoned inner cities, where there are few educational or economic opportunities for people living in slums, especially minorities. The media often implies it's the fault of the poor living in these areas, but policy decisions by the rich are responsible for depriving them of reasonable opportunities and forcing many people into desperate situations. There are numerous studies, including some simple ones I did my self, as well as peer reviewed ones from traditional academics, showing that other contributing causes or risk factors for violence include income inequality, poverty, lack of child care, education or employment opportunities, gambling, union busting and other factors, including even insurance, which provides an incentive for crime or murder all increase violence. I've done numerous articles on these issues listed at Contributing causes to crime and how to prevent them.

In addition to those studies there are other studies that show it's far less expensive to house the homeless than it is to ignore the problem and allow social problems to escalate; there are many of these studies in the United States, but the best one may come from Finland where they adopted a housing first program which saves about $17,600 as I pointed out in Machiavellian Ideology Ignores Real Science, which includes several links to peer reviewed studies. This article also covers studies about drug treatment including Portugal's efforts to decriminalize drug abuse and treat it. Most of the studies from that article don't focus on financial savings, but they show they save an enormous amount of lives, keep people out of prison, and prevent many social problems from escalating, which no doubt will save a lot more than it costs as well. Even though the studies I covered previously don't address financial savings this article does, Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars and Cents: A Cost-Benefit Analysis and it says:
1.2. Savings From Effective School-Based Substance Abuse Prevention

If effective prevention programs were implemented nationwide, substance abuse initiation would decline for 1.5 million youth and be delayed for 2 years on average. It has been well established that a delay in onset reduces subsequent problems later in life (Grant & Dawson, 1997; Lynskey et al., 2003). In 2003, an estimated:

* 8 percent fewer youth ages 13 to 15 would not have engaged in binge drinking
* 11.5 percent fewer youth would not have used marijuana
* 45.8 percent fewer youth would not have used cocaine
* 10.7 percent fewer youth would not have smoked regularly

The average effective school-based program in 2002 costs $220 per pupil including materials and teacher training, and these programs could save an estimated $18 per $1 invested if implemented nationwide. Nationwide, full implementation of school-based effective programming in 2002 would have had the following fiscal impact:

* Saved State and local governments $1.3 billion, including $1.05 billion in educational costs within 2 years
* Reduced social costs of substance-abuse–related medical care, other resources, and lost productivity over a lifetime by an estimated $33.5 billion
* Preserved the quality of life over a lifetime valued at $65 billion

These aren't the only studies saying that show solving problems before they escalate, another article of mine Burying violence prevention education, including Crumbly shooting, is routine! reviewed these studies as well as studies on child care and how much money they save, especially for at risk parents, and some studies show that for every dollar spent on child care at least seven dollars are save on other social problems by preventing them from escalating, and other studies have shown they might save as much as sixteen dollars for every dollar spent on child care. All these early social problems which are far less expensive than dealing with increased social problems also help solve many other issues, including Epidemic of abandoned babies & possibly mothers, which is far worse in the United States than in Europe, like many other social problems, because they do a much better job funding many problems before they escalate.

Then why aren't all these solutions which have been proven to work being implemented?

Furthermore, in most cases the research showing how to solve many social problems is decades old and has been getting consistently better as more research is done, as I have pointed out in several articles including We're Using Children For Research, Without Accepting The Benefits! which cites several sources, including Lisbeth Schorr "Within Our Reach" 1988, thirty-five years ago, and provides many more studies about how helping at risk families saves much more money than it costs. There have been many other research books going back decades if not over a century, before her book, although in most cases the most recent research improves on past research, including research since her book, yet politicians don't base important decisions on this research, nor does the media inform the public about this research.

The clear answer seems to be that those that control powerful organizations, mostly a small percentage or the public which happen to be very wealthy and control corporations and media, don't want to educate the public or look out for the best interest of the majority, otherwise they already would have done so. I pointed this out in Conclusive Proof Showing Democracy In The USA Is A Lie! which shows dozens of polls and when it comes to most polls related to fiscal issues a large majority of the public is clearly on one side of the issue, but campaign donors are on the other side and the political establishment always takes the side of campaign donors. The exceptions are social issues which might have politicians on both sides of the issue, or when it comes to fiscal issues, one exception might be spending on infrastructure, which Biden finally increased, but perhaps not until it was so bad that it impacted the profits of the wealthy so it was the rare case where campaign donors are on the same side as the public. In most cases these polls impact issues that could help solve social problems, reduce violence, and save money at the same time, like the studies I mentioned above. Some of this includes increased spending for child care which I mentioned above, but all of them would reduce epidemic levels of income inequality and white collar crime, which would reduce social problems and crime.

This clearly indicates that our government isn't nearly as Democratic as we've been led to believe. Instead of a Democracy we have a Machiavellian Plutocracy where the rich control the information we use to make important decisions, while the best research to solve many problems, including to help reduce violence and make panic situations like mass shootings much less common, is not presented to the public or used to solve problems. The same also goes to wars in foreign countries where the truth is often buried until it's too late, including the conflicts in both Ukraine and Gaza, where the media has provided the public with an incredibly biased and selective view of the facts.

In both the Ukrainian and Gaza/Israel cases I found that alternative media outlets were far more reliable than traditional media, and in some cases traditional media didn't report on many important details until they were pressured to but still presented a very biased view. I didn't agree with Putin's invasion of Ukraine or Hamas's raid in Israel, but there were important facts about both situations traditional media refused to report properly, and both of them could have been prevented; on top of that, they weren't unprovoked, as our government and media try to claim. When Russia invaded Ukraine traditional media hardly reported on the fact that this followed an eight year civil war, portraying it as unprovoked as I pointed out in If You Care About Children, It Must Include Victims Of Both Russia & the USA where I started by pointing out the double standard, which is very common, of being outraged by the murder of some children by our enemies, while covering up the murder of children, often much worse, by our allies, including Israel. That article pointed out that even though traditional media wasn't covering it, other sources were and they showed that the civil war began because of protests following the former president's refusal to accept a loan that would require austerity suppressing workers rights. The protest that led to the coup was supported by Neo-Nazis, which were a relatively small percentage of the population, but a large percentage of those trying to overthrow the government, and Victoria Nuland. After the revolution or coup, workers rights groups, socialists, and communists, were deprived of their rights and often attacked and killed in the civil war. I went into this more in Which Alternative Ukrainian Reality Is Real? which also explains that without the intervention of Biden and Nuland the coup and civil war never would have happened, nor would the Russian invasion, and if they allowed reasonable negotiations they could have ended the war long ago.

There are some similarities with the war between Israel and Gaza for the past two months, which is mostly based on a narrow acknowledgement of history. Not only could this recent conflict have been prevented, but so could many previous wars, as I pointed out in World War II Could & Should Have Been Avoided, Zionists May Have Been Partly Responsible which focuses largely on the "Transfer Agreement" where Zionists agreed to abandoned plans to boycott Germany as early as 1933, especially if they had help from other sources, but by abandoning that boycott they may have enabled Hitler's economy to recover and even unwittingly financing it indirectly. That article also includes some discussion of other ways the war and Holocaust could have been prevented, including if wealthy people hadn't been sympathetic to Hitler, and even considers what could have happen if God, assuming he exists, had provided advice to teach people to get along, instead of inspiring multiple religions and watching while they fight and kill each other. If that had happened, no doubt the recent conflict never would have happened either.

After that article and the recent war broke out I pointed out how Israel and Zionist supporters were ignoring many aspects of history in USA & Israel Are Intentionally Creating Permanent Conflict, Based on Lies! which also points out the (Wikipedia) Nakba and constant oppression by Israel of the Palestinians showing the October 7 attack was far from unprovoked and that, once again Israel was killing far more people than Hamas, the vast majority who were not involved in the October 7. When I first posted that there were only about five thousand Palestinians killed in response to the October 7 attack and few of them were involved in the attack, while over two thousand of them were children. Now the total is about fifteen thousand Palestinians killed with over six thousand of them children. Initially there were only 27 children killed on the October 7 attack, this may have grown to at least 29, recently then after several child hostages died, possibly from Israeli air raids, it may have risen from there, possibly to about 35, which is too high, but not nearly as high as the 6,000 children killed by Israel.

Since then I found one of the sources for some of the videos that I cited in the previous article which actually came from Tantura (2022) 1080p HD a documentary about Nakba in a seaside village where witnesses and participants admitted to it. yet the Israeli government, our government, traditional media, and many other supporters of Zionism are almost in total denial about this. The result is that the most important decisions are based on lies, and this has costed thousands of lives recently, and past lies cost millions of lives!

If we want to prevent wars based on lies and other atrocities that make panic situations that may infringe on our rights we have to have a media which does a much better job reporting the truth!

There's much more to the Israel conflict which I haven't got to, but I will in a follow up article; but for now alternative media, if you sort through the best ones, is much more credible than traditional media.

In the meantime the following are more sources for this article, including some about the Israel conflict:

The Shift: March for Israel 11/16/2023 Thousands gathered in Washington this week to support Israel. The Israeli Consulate announced 290,000 people attended, while estimates show they were off by about 265,000. Still, support for Israel from elected officials was clear. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) live-tweeted the proceedings but remained suspiciously silent during Pastor John Hagee’s speech. It would take too long to run through every infamous thing this man has said, so let’s just cover the ones that might be relevant to, say, the Anti-Defamation League: He once said, “God sent Hitler to help Jews reach the Promised Land.“ He once said the Antichrist is a “half-Jew homosexual.” He once said The Holocaust happened because Jews disobeyed God. He once said The Holocaust happened because Jews defied Zionism. He once said a peace deal in the Middle East will be the work of the Antichrist.

What? 11/14/2023 “God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land,” the pastor claimed in a 1999 sermon. (He apologized almost a decade later, saying that “I grappled with the vexing question of why a loving God would allow the evil of the Holocaust to occur…I regret if my Jewish friends felt any pain as a result.”) After Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 2,000 people, Hagee blamed it on gay people. “There was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.” (He later semi-apologized, saying, “Neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina. I should not have suggested otherwise.”)

“When my grandmother arrived here in Israel….” 11/03/2023 “When my grandmother arrived here in Israel, after the holocaust, the Jewish agency promised her a house. She had nothing. Her whole family had been exterminated. She waited a long time, living in a tent in a very precarious position. They then took her to Ajami in Jaffa, in a wonderful house on the beach. She saw that on the table there were still the plates of the Palestinians who had lived there, and who had been driven away. She returned to the agency and said “take me back to my tent, I’ll never do to someone else that which has been done to me.” This is my heredity, but not everybody made that choice. How can we become that which we were oppressed by? This is a great question.“ Hadar Morag, Israeli Director.

Israel-Gaza conflict: Latest news as hostage explains why she shook Hamas militant's hand 10/25/2023 When asked why she turned to shake hands with one of the Hamas militants as he turned her over to the Red Cross, she replied that they had treated her "with softness and supplied all our needs". "We told them, no politics," she said of conversations they tried to have with their captors. "We didn’t answer them [on politics]. They talked about all kinds of things. They were very friendly to us. They took care of all of our needs; this must be said to their credit. We ate what they did."

A growing number of reports indicate Israeli forces responsible for Israeli civilian and military deaths following October 7 attack 10/22/2023 Electronic Intifada published a long interview with Yasmin Porat, describing how she was held hostage by Palestinian militants in Kibbutz Be’eri. According to her account, the kidnappers treated her and other hostages “humanely,” believing they would be allowed to retreat safely to Gaza due to the protection of the Israeli captives. However, when the Israeli soldiers arrived, “they eliminated everyone, including the hostages. There was very, very heavy crossfire.”

How did the Hamas enter the most secured and sophisticated Israel border? 10/29/2023 They also revealed how the borders between Israel and Gaza are the most heavily secured borders anywhere on Earth. High tech sensors alert the Israeli Defense Forces from the moment that even a small animal approaches the border Yet hundreds of Hamas fighters were not only able to approach the border, but they blew up the fences, they entered Israeli territory and started destroying homes and burning down villages and killing Israeli people without any semblance of defense by the Israeli military. Turns out that shortly before this attack, the government had ordered the removal of all military presence from that area. Hamas was literally given a free pass to enter and start their operation. In the next videos you will hear former members of the Israeli Defense Force explain that something very, very concerning ... I served as an Infantry Operations Sergeant during Operation Protective Edge (2014) in Gaza. I was in the Logistics Support during the 2014 Gaza war. Listen carefully, there is no way in the world that anyone can approach the border without us knowing about it!! The observers sit in the bunkers and cannot move their eyes. They look at the screen constantly. A pigeon or stork that approaches the border immediately alerts all the forces in the sector!! There is no way in hell that they didn’t see 400 men with tractors come. How 'Israel' likely killed its own settlers on October 7: The Grayzone 10/27/2023 The Grayzone publishes a report that covers various incidents, evidence, and testimonies that showcase Israeli fingerprints all over the killing and burning of settlers in the Gaza Envelope.

What really happened on 7th October? 10/24/2023 Evidence is now emerging that up to half the Israelis killed were combatants; that Israeli forces were responsible for some of their own civilian deaths; and that Tel Aviv disseminated false ‘Hamas atrocities’ stories to justify its devastating air assault on Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Van Jones heckled during 'March for Israel' rally: 'No ceasefire!' 11/14/2023 The heckling started after Jones expressed sympathy for Israeli and Palestinian children caught in the war that was started on Oct. 7 when the terrorist group Hamas attacked Israel, killing more than 1,200 people. "My heart breaks for all the Israeli children. My heart breaks for all the Palestinian children, and my heart breaks for all the Jewish American children who are now also living in fear," Jones said before referencing the more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas. "I pray that every single hostage is released." At first, the crowd roared with approval before breaking into chants of "No ceasefire! No ceasefire!" and boos when Jones called for an end to bombing in Gaza. "I'm a peace guy. I pray for peace. No more rockets from Gaza and no more bombs falling down on the people of Gaza. God protect the children," Jones continued amid the crowd's disapproval. "Let's end all the horror and all the heartbreak in the Holy Land."

The pizza delivery man had an explosive collar locked around his neck, and he was told that it would detonate if he didn't complete a scavenger hunt list, which included robbing a bank. Wells was ultimately caught and arrested, and just a few minutes before the bomb squad arrived, the explosive device was detonated, instantly killing Wells.

Walmart Crime Report October 2023

Walmart had at least eight more shootings in October 2023, with at least three people killed. One of the dead people was taken from the scene by the person that killed him and his body was found over a week later, although the suspect was arrested within a day of the shooting. There was also at least one person seriously injured. In addition to the three people killed in shootings, there were two more people killed in separate accidents, one by a Walmart truck which wasn't on their property, and five bodies found on their property, most not considered suspicious. But one of them is considered a murder where the suspect claim a sexual advance was made and he allegedly beat the man to death. This brings the total dead related to Walmart last month to ten.

There were close to, if not more than, one and a half dozen more gun related crimes on their property, including many armed robberies, mostly of the store, but some of customers, a few leading to police chases as well, stolen guns, shoplifters that were armed, although they didn't pull the guns, at least two or three threats to shoot up the store, which weren't carried out, a "swatting" incident, and more crime.

Walmart had all kinds of assaults, robberies, large scale thefts, including$60,000 or more, brawls, kidnapping, murder suspects hiding, an arrest of someone who nearly cut off someones hand with a machete, sucker-punches of old people, and much more.

They're also having epidemic levels of problems with self-checkout, including false accusations, protests, and, of course, many legitimate theft encouraged by this system, which often leads to violence as well, endangering both customers and employees.

At least two police officers were arrested at Florida and Pennsylvania stores for petty thefts, which is surprisingly common, with several every year, although two in one month isn't typical. One of them was retired anyway, but it's standard operating procedure to fire them quickly when they get caught stealing from a rich corporation, even though their unions routinely come to their defense when they kill a poor person, showing an obvious class bias.

Walmart has a growing practice of searching the records months if not years old, often if they catch one person skip-scanning and paying with a card, they'll search the records and cameras for previous purchases and charge for those as well; in one case last month they charged a woman for a March 2019 transaction involving a gift card for a modest amount, but it's unclear why they searched so far back. Some stores, including Kroger, are using Artificial Intelligence to catch shoplifters, which is different from Walmart's, but Walmart also does similar things, and they often lead to false accusation, yet they're still reluctant to hire more cashiers in most places.

They found another credit card skimmer at a Louisiana store, which is happening all over the country, and they often don't find them for weeks if not months so people using Walmart terminals, especially self-checkout ones, have their private information put at risk and Walmart doesn't take responsibility, although some banks still do.

Dozens of trucks were stranded outside Walmart Distribution Center in Lewiston Maine because of a shelter in place order banning people from traveling, including those unloading trucks, as a result of the mass shooting there. This is virtually a state of Martial law, although not quite as common as the one in Cambridge and Watertown after the Boston Bombing. But there are many other incidents like this in mass shootings or other panics, even though our government ignores long term causes of violence which could make this much less likely, and the media doesn't report on this research either, so most people don't know it's happening.

In addition to the two people killed in automobile accidents there was another fatal accident killing one of their employees off their property and not related to their business, and there were over a dozen major accidents, stolen vehicles, including a tractor trailer with $75 K worth of merchandise, hit and runs, chases, involving close to a dozen injuries, and many other automobile crimes, not even counting minor fender benders which probably happen every day without being reported.

There was also a major vehicle fire at their stores as well as six more fires, one in each state on the Southern border from Texas to Florida, as well as Arizona, and the four from Louisiana to Florida were all arson, some of them were large.

Walmart also had at least half a dozen knife attacks with at least four different people injured by stabbings, while other two were threats at least one after being caught stealing. There were also numerous assaults without knives or guns, plus large thefts.

Walmart had at least four more major recalls, including baby clothes, children's activity centers, candies with a choking hazard and frozen burritos. These almost never get widespread attention so many people routinely use dangerous products that have been recalled without realizing it.

Walmart is also being accused of luring customers in with low prices then charging higher prices, which is not unprecedented and deceptive advertising has been routine for decades. Theft by deception using this method is not considered a crime, and in most cases it's not even protected under civil court, yet if consumers use deception to ge a better price it's prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and Walmart is even cracking down on use of coupons to get good deals. If they don't want to give people breaks they shouldn't use coupons as a marketing practice at all. This shows how law enforcement is rigged heavily in favor of the rich or corporations!

Walmart has reported that Ozempic could be reducing food sales, and they're concerned about it's impact on profit, not the health of people. I don't know how safe this is, or if it helps or harms health, but this debate isn't concerned with that; instead it's concerned with which products to promote for maximum profit, not the best health of consumers.

Their delivery drivers are now complaining that fake accounts are taking all the deliveries, some that they might not be able to fill; this has been going on for a while but Walmart isn't doing anything about it. There are also several complaints about truckloads or full carts of food being thrown in the trash or compost when it could still be eaten and given to the poor. In some case they say compost isn't as bad as landfills, but it's not as good as giving it to the poor and reducing waste, which would be best for the environment, but our economic system is only concerned with profit for the rich, not the environment or the interests of the majority.

Walmart is also beefing up third party sales, but they're not holding their suppliers accountable for fraud, while they do enforce computer requirements concerned with profit. One of their suppliers has also gone bankrupt, which is semi-routine, since they squeeze suppliers, workers, and customers so much. They also have Mike Rowe cheering them on, pretending to defend the working class while opposing wage increases or protection of their rights. Perhaps he's worth $30 million for providing corporations with propaganda.

Walmart has condemned the Hamas attack, which was bad, of course, but Israel's bombing of Gaza for decades has always been much worse, and the bombing since Oct. 7 is much worse than any previous attack since Nakba 75 years ago, yet Walmart and other corporations as well as our government don't seem to care about.

How often do you or your friends get arrested for driving a golf cart through Walmart drinking vodka?

Ever wonder if a 20-foot sinkhole could open up under your car when you park at Walmart? Do you live in Florida, which has more sinkholes than the rest of the country?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Man injured during private sale gone wrong in Walmart parking lot 10/01/2023

A man was injured in west Lawrence on Saturday while attempting to sell an electronic device in the parking lot of Walmart.

According to a Facebook post by the Lawrence Police Department on Sunday, the man arrived at Walmart, 550 Congressional Drive, after arranging a sale through Facebook Marketplace. Facebook Marketplace is a platform that facilitates business deals for both individuals and businesses.

The man told officers that the sale went bad when occupants of the vehicle sped away as he handed his Apple iPad Pro to an individual in the passenger seat. The man told officers that he attempted to reach into the vehicle to retrieve the device but wound up "knocked onto his bumper, then to the ground," as the vehicle left the scene, the post said.

Officers stopped a vehicle matching its description a short time later near 23rd Street and Naismith Drive and found “an iPad matching the description of the one allegedly stolen, along with other evidence,” the post said, adding that several juveniles were in the car. No arrests were made, but parents of the individuals in the car were called to the scene. Complete article

17 of the Oddest Things Walmart Employees Have Encountered 10/01/2023

Despite being a relatively lawless land, Walmart’s customer service is rooted in four pillars: Service to the Customer, Respect for the Individual, Striving for Excellence and Acting with Integrity. (Not sure where that last part factors in collecting life insurance policies on your employees, but we digress.)

Sam Walton, the man responsible for creating Walmart and Sam’s Club, developed this service structure so that customers could have a seamless experience at every location throughout the country. He also established “The 10-foot Rule,” which he dubbed one of the secrets to Walmart’s customer service. Walton would encourage associates to take this pledge: “I solemnly promise and declare that every customer that comes within 10 feet of me, I will smile, look them in the eye, greet them and ask if I can help them.”

Getting within 10 feet of a customer in the name of good customer service, however, opens employees up to some strange interactions, which these Walmart employees of Reddit were more than happy to share......

Was at my local Walmart once. Fire alarm goes off. Jewelry counter is smoldering. Evacuate? No. Fire alarm silenced, shoppers allowed to keep shopping with smoke fogging half the store.

I worked customer service one night and had an older man call asking if he could refund a carton of eggs he bought because they didn't hatch after being under a light for a long time. he was serious enough to start screaming at me and I had to have my manager take the phone. Complete article

Labor advocates snag Walmart seed money to launch Ethical Charter program 10/02/2023

Fresh produce industry stakeholders have come together to design the Ethical Charter Implementation Program, a project that aims to recognize and strengthen engagement around labor practices in the fresh produce industry without the burden of additional audits.

Launched with initial funding from the Walmart Foundation, the program is led by Equitable Food Initiative and The Sustainability Consortium and overseen by an advisory group, according to a news release.

“When the Ethical Charter was launched in 2018, it reinforced the principle that all workers in fresh produce supply chains should be treated with dignity and respect. The Walmart Foundation is pleased to support this next phase of work around development of the Ethical Charter Implementation Program that helps strengthen the industry and protections for all those who work in and are dependent on it,” Gavin Bailey, senior manager for Walmart.org, said in the release. “I’m encouraged by the collaboration among industry peers on leading this effort and encourage others to join our efforts.” Complete article

Suspects sought in attempted armored car robbery, shootout outside Country Club Hills Ill. Walmart 10/02/2023

Police in south suburban Country Club Hills were searching for multiple suspects wanted in connection with a shootout and attempted armored truck robbery outside a Walmart store on Monday morning, according to the FBI.

Footage from the scene showed police tape and a number of law enforcement vehicles at the store just before 11:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of 167th Street. Evidence markers appeared scattered around the exterior of the store. An FBI spokesperson said an armored truck was in front of the business when a sedan approached at a high rate of speed, and the people inside began firing shots.

The employees in the armored car exchanged gunfire with the suspects, as did a security officer who exited the store when the situation unfolded. Authorities said a suspect was believed to have been hit by at least one round.

The gunmen subsequently ran from the car, carjacked a vehicle from an elderly person and fled the scene, police said. The shooters had yet to be apprehended as of Monday afternoon. Complete article

Walmart Exec Reportedly Says Ozempic Could Be Impacting Food Sales: ‘Slight Pullback In Overall Basket’ 10/04/2023

TOPLINE Walmart U.S. chief executive John Furner said in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday that the company has seen “a slight change” in food purchasing habits of people taking Ozempic and other weight loss drugs compared to people who aren’t—as impacts of the popular medication seep into the corporate world.

Walmart is studying changes in sales patterns by looking at anonymized shopper data and comparing that of people who take a weight loss drug like Ozempic to people who don’t, but Furner said it’s too soon to draw conclusions.

The company is seeing “a slight pullback in overall basket” when looking at the consumer data, though, for people who take Ozempic, Wegovy or other popular weight-loss drugs, Furner told Bloomberg. Furner said the pullback has been “just less units, slightly less calories,” Bloomberg reported.

Companies like Walmart are working to take stock of shopper trends for people on Ozempic as the weight-loss drug is only expected to continue its rise in popularity: Morgan Stanley is estimating that 24 million people—or 7% of the U.S. population—could be taking GLP-1 drugs by 2035. Kroger has an intrusive plan to stop theft (Walmart and Target might follow) 10/07/2023

Few consumers want to use self-checkout.

From the consumer side, the technology forces customers to do work that store employees usually do, Aside from people who don't like making small talk with a clerk, and folks who are in a rush, it's hard to see who benefits from self-checkout.

Stores like self-checkout because it eliminates workers. At a time when retail wages have been rising, not paying people to scan your purchases appeals to companies trying to cut costs.

The problem from the corporate side is that self-checkout comes with increased theft. Some of that is accidental and some falls in the "we're not sure" category, but when you take people out of the equation, shrink — the industry term for retail theft — goes up.

A company called Everseen Visual AI will virtually examine the video, flagging any discrepancies. The AI flags not only incidents of customers stealing but also abnormal patterns, and it will alert store personnel.

So, if a customer does not efficiently scan and bag their items — even if they're not stealing — they could face the indignity of a store employee coming to examine their bags. Complete article

Walmart Spark delivery drivers say they are waiting over an hour to pick up orders — it's the latest sign of trouble for the retailer's delivery business 10/06/2023

Drivers for Walmart's Spark delivery service are waiting an hour or more in parking lots for orders.
So are Walmart's pick-up customers, who rely on the same system when they pull up to a store.
It's the latest issue for Walmart's delivery business, which is also coping with fraudulent drivers.

Every time an Alabama-based driver for Walmart's Spark delivery service accepts an order, a deadline for him to report to his local Walmart flashes on the Spark app. He often has around 10 minutes to pick it up.

But the driver told Insider that when he's arrived in the past, he has had to wait in the parking lot for the better part of an hour for a store employee to bring orders out to his car.

"They summon you there, and then you'll sit there and sit there and sit there," the driver told Insider. "The longest I've waited was an hour and 15 minutes just because there was a good tip attached to it, but it's just gotten really bad." Complete article

Costco and Walmart move away from self-checkouts after customer backlash 10/10/2023

After customers voiced frustrations with self-checkout machines, some big retail stores decided to make changes. This comes as shoplifting continues to surge.

Stores such as Costco and Walmart have launched new methods to combat the increasing backlash from customers regarding their systems. Walmart announced that it is completely removing self-checkouts three of its stores in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Walmart spokesperson Josh Havens told Insider : "We continually look at ways to provide our customers with the best shopping experience and that includes adjusting the checkout area in stores."

Gwinnett man banned from Ga. Walmart after being told he ‘fit the description’ of shoplifter 10/13/2023

Some Walmart employees say customers are getting hostile at self-checkout — and they blame anti-theft tech 10/13/2023

Walmart employees say working with anti-theft technology at self-checkouts has led to some tense confrontations with customers.

If the technology detects a problem — such as an unscanned item — a light above the machine illuminates, the machine pauses, and it sends a text notification to nearby employees. Walmart has trained these workers to approach customers and try to resolve the issue, though they're prohibited from directly accusing anyone of theft, seven former and current Walmart employees told Insider.

The confrontations can sometimes get heated, with customers acting confused, defensive, or at times aggressive, employees said.

Mendy, a 10-year employee of a Walmart store in Arkansas, said customers had become so hostile at the registers that some had thrown merchandise at her. Complete article

Frustrated shopper slams Walmart over disgusting discovery in grocery delivery: ‘Lesson learned’ 10/15/2023

Getting your groceries delivered can be an efficient and planet-friendly way to stock up on food for the week.

Instead of several customers each taking their cars to the store, one truck making several deliveries will reduce the amount of pollution from dirty-fuel-powered vehicles that contributes to global heating. If that truck is powered by electricity, even better.

But getting good-quality produce is still important, and one Redditor was particularly disappointed by what they received in their Walmart order.

Posting on the r/mildlyinfuriating sub-Reddit, the image shows a moldy lemon in a bag of the citrus fruit, in addition to a sliced-open, rotten apple. Complete article The claim that Walmart delivery involves one truck, which could be electric, making several deliveries protecting the environment is obviously false, and even this article shows it. Most delivieries are done by subcontractors using their own cars, so if anything it increases polution, especially if there are many complaints and extra trips, which there are.

Walmart to open proprietary milk processing facility 10/13/2023 (Proprietary means secret and exclusive, which isn't competitive; they use propaganda to make it seem like they're looking out for your best interests.)

Walmart is bolstering its capacity to meet consumer demand for milk.

The discount chain is breaking ground later this year on an owned and operated milk processing facility in Valdosta, Ga. The new plant, which Walmart expects to create nearly 400 local jobs, is intended to increase the retailer’s supply chain resiliency while building more transparency around sourcing.

Using ingredients sourced from local farmers, the facility will process and bottle a variety of milk options including gallon, half gallon, whole, 2%, 1%, skim and 1% chocolate milk for Walmart’s Great Value and Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark brands.

The products from the facility will serve more than 750 Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the Southeast. Walmart opened its first milk processing plant in Fort Wayne, Ind. in 2018. Complete article

Don’t make Walmart workers fight crime: Boot out the pols who killed public safety 10/16/2023

As America’s shoplifting crime wave continues, retail workers continue to bear the brunt.

The latest?

Walmart has implemented anti-theft tech to stop sticky-fingered customers in self-checkout lines — relying on employees, unarmed and often untrained, to handle the would-be thieves.

The predictable result: a rise in potentially violent confrontations.

And, per a beleaguered worker, “Those who are trying to scam the register are the ones who get upset the most.”

Look no further than the past few months to see where this will lead. Complete article

Walmart's Website Is Selling Fake Products. Even Worse, It's Advertising Them on Instagram 10/1/2023

If it seems too good to be true, you probably shouldn't be advertising it to unsuspecting customers.

If you're the world's largest retailer, you sell a lot of stuff. Walk into any Walmart and you'll see what I mean. The average Walmart store is almost 200,000 square feet, and it carries an average of 120,000 different products.

That's a lot, but it's nothing compared with the company's website, Walmart.com, which sells around 160 million products. The thing about selling that many products is that it gets complicated very quickly. That, it turns out, is a valuable lesson for every business. We'll get to that part in a minute.

You might think that if you buy something from Walmart.com, you're buying something from Walmart, but that's not true. Most of what you'll find online are products sold by third-party sellers through Walmart's marketplace. In many cases, those sellers are responsible for managing their own inventory, listing products on the website, and shipping products to customers.

It seems like a good deal for everyone. The sellers pay a commission to Walmart in exchange for access to its customers. Walmart gets more products to offer customers--without actually having to manage the inventory--and collects revenue every time you buy something.

The thing is, when you let anyone sell stuff on your website, some of it is going to be problematic. Some of what they sell isn't going to meet your standards. Some of it might be altogether fake or a scam. Complete article

Why Walmart Wants to Put Your Wallet at Risk 10/18/2023

The following content is sponsored by the Electronic Payments Coalition.

Walmart hopes you are already focused on holiday prep and not paying attention to what’s happening on Capitol Hill.

For years, Walmart and other megaretailers have lobbied senators and congressmen for favors. Walmart alone employs approximately 1.6 million people in the United States, and in their last quarter had revenue of over $160 billion. You can see why they have an outsized ability to influence elected officials.

Their latest request is to overhaul how credit card payments are routed during purchases. They’d like the Federal Reserve to implement new rules that favor big-box stores, and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and others are happy to oblige. Sen. Durbin introduced the “Credit Card Competition Act” this summer and is pushing it amongst his colleagues. He has even got Republican Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas to sign-on. The bill will give unprecedented power to the federal government to control consumers’ credit card transactions. Right now, retailers and financial institutions have negotiated agreements about how payments operate, but this will upend all of that and force companies like Visa and Mastercard to hand over their technology for free.

These new rules, if the legislation passes, will come at a significant cost for consumers.

Walmart wants to use these new rules specifically to cut corners on data security. Under today’s laws, if you pay for something at a store with a credit card, the retailer currently has to use the routing network of whatever card you give them. The retailers have a right not to accept certain cards, but if they choose to, they have to accept those cards’ terms and security requirements.

So, if you picked out a Mastercard or Visa card because of its security guarantees and perks, you know that your financial information is being safely routed over their network with their 21st century technology. This new law on the table will end that security. Complete article

Video of massive truckload of ‘legit’ produce from Walmart sparks debate: ‘This is so hard to watch’ 10/19/2023

It’s always discouraging to see how much food grocery stores throw away on a regular basis — with much of it being perfectly edible.

One video recently posted to the r/composting subreddit showed a bunch of produce from Walmart getting dumped at a composting facility.

“Walmart food waste getting dumped at our facility. I feel like Walmart should invest in a juicer. This stuff looks legit!” the caption read.

The post sparked somewhat of a debate on the subreddit, with many posters finding themselves conflicted. Although getting the produce composted is much preferred to sending it straight to a landfill, it is not the ideal use of food either.

“Part of me is glad that it isn’t going straight to landfill, but part of me really wishes this produce was going to a food bank or a charity to make meals for those in need first,” wrote one commenter. Complete article

Walmart beefs up its third-party marketplace as it challenges bigger online rival Amazon 10/18/2023

It was summer in Las Vegas — the temperature hit nearly 110 degrees that late August day — but Christmas was on everyone’s minds.

While Santa Claus wandered around during an invitation-only conference, businesses that sell items on Walmart’s website attended how-to sessions and swapped advice. Walmart leaders gave third-party marketplace sellers an early gift, too: Waiving extra fees for storing merchandise during the peak season.

Doug McMillon, who leads the world’s largest retailer, took the stage and made a sales pitch to the smaller businesses and brands.

“We hope you’ll choose to grow with us,” the CEO told the more than 1,500 attendees, invoking the memory of company founder Sam Walton, who was at one time a small-town entrepreneur. “We want you to bring great items to our marketplace. Our team is here to serve you.” Complete article

Walmart requiring all suppliers to move to Luminate data service 10/17/2023

Walmart is requiring all of its suppliers to subscribe to its Luminate data service beginning in October. Luminate is Walmart’s newest way to share data with suppliers – data that includes a detailed look into their business.

The Bentonville-based retail giant said last week it will phase out its Decision Support System (DSS) app in the Retail Link portal and will no longer be available as of March 1, 2024. The DSS app is what many suppliers use to track store sales, see inventory at stores and distribution centers, and forecast demand at stores. The system was built on old software and has served the retailer well over the years, according to Jami Dennis, founder of VendorMasters.

The retail giant said Luminate includes a suite of analytic tools that deliver actionable, customer-centric insights to drive better business decisions. Luminate came about through a collaboration between Walmart Data Ventures and Dunnhumby, a third-party marketing research tech firm. Walmart began marketing its paid Luminate subscriptions to suppliers two years ago. But now the retailer is making a free version of the Luminate app available to all suppliers saying it will replace the old DSS system inside Retail Link early next year. Complete article

Walmart shoppers say they feel 'treated like thieves' when self-checkout mistakes happen 10/22/2023

Walmart uses automated missed-scan detection to reduce theft at its self-checkout kiosks.
Workers told Insider the tech has led to confrontations with customers who trigger the alert.
But shoppers say they've felt "treated like thieves" due to honest mistakes and technical glitches.

Charles Bisbee was scanning and bagging groceries recently in the self-checkout lane of his local Walmart in Alamogordo, New Mexico, when he says an employee approached him, reached into his bag, and pulled out a container of energy drink mix.

"Are you going to pay for that?" he recalled the employee asking in what he said was a "confrontational" tone and manner.

As other shoppers waited in line, the former US Marine told Insider he stifled a surge of embarrassment and pointed to the screen to show that the item in question had indeed been scanned, and his transaction was still in progress. Complete article

Delivery drivers who work with Walmart complain of scam, 'rogue' drivers 10/20/2023

Jessica Vera said she depended on a Walmart mobile delivery app to earn a living by driving merchandise purchased online by the retailer's customers and dropping it off at their homes.

But when she began mysteriously seeing a marked decrease in requests for orders from her "Spark" app — and waiting longer and longer between deliveries — she could no longer rely on Walmart for her primary source of income.

"You're spending more hours wasting more time doing nothing, sitting outside in the sun, driving around, trying to find the money," said the Broward County resident. "It's crazy having to work other platforms to just make ends meet because it's just that bad."

What Vera experienced is not an isolated incident, according to Justice for App Workers. They claim she and hundreds of other delivery drivers in Florida are victims of a "predatory scam ring" that has hacked into Walmart's app to steer deliveries to a group of "rogue" drivers.

"Scam leaders have refused to re-distribute these Walmart digital orders to their fellow delivery drivers unless they pay them with cash or sometimes even through cell phones or marijuana," said Nicki Morris, a spokeswoman for Justice for App Workers, in a statement. Complete article

Images of food aisles at Walmart blocked off with caution tape spark outrage online: ‘That’s just not right’ 10/23/2023

Photos of shopping carts full of various foods being thrown away in a Walmart were recently posted online, causing consternation and sadness among the commenters.

The images show shopping carts full of bacon and other meat, frozen pizzas, baked goods, and other items, all ready to be thrown in the garbage. The frozen food and refrigerated sections are blocked off with yellow caution tape.

“This is tragic in the USA to do this when so many [go] hungry daily,” wrote TikTok user hurladenton (@redbirds29691), who posted the images. “Unbelievable and disrespectful … I called Walmart and complained that this could have been donated quickly. I was told they will NOT donate.”

In the comment section, replying to a commenter who asked whether the power went out, they replied, “Not the power but they told us something with the temperature [gauges].” That means that the food was possibly still perfectly fine for consumption, but because of store policy, it ended up in a landfill. Walmart condemns 'inhuman and horrific' Hamas attack, pledges $1m. to Magen David Adom 10/29/2023 Since the Oct. 7 attack Israel responded by killing well over 6,000 people, including more than 3,000 children, few of who were involved in the initial attack, yet this article doesn't condemn that.

Walmart is invested in several Israeli tech companies, including Team8, and has acquired several more in the past 5 years.

In the face of ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, the Walmart Foundation has taken a strong stance in support of humanitarian efforts, pledging to donate $1 million to Magen David Adom in order to support the organization and its efforts to save lives. The company announced this move in a statement sent out on Friday to Walmart associates and partners.

“As you all know, throughout these horrific and inhuman attacks by Hamas, Magen David Adom has played a critical role in providing medical aid to victims. To show support for all persons affected by these tragedies in the region, the Walmart Foundation is committing $1m. in funding to MDA for emergency services to save lives,” the statement read.

Walmart’s commitment to aiding those in need extends beyond its contribution to MDA. Last week, the Walmart Foundation pledged an additional $1m. grant to the US Holocaust Museum, showing the company’s dedication to supporting initiatives that promote understanding and commemorate historical atrocities. Why Mike Rowe Supports American Manufacturing Through Walmart Initiative 10/30/2023

DIRTY JOBS host Mike Rowe recently opened up about a new initiative he’s part of that celebrates “entrepreneurship, small business, manufacturing, and innovation.”

The initiative? Walmart’s Open Call program. Rowe describes it as “a combination of Shark Tank and QVC, on steroids.”

“Everyone there had a product to pitch that’s made in the USA, and roughly 30% of those pitching leave with a commitment from Walmart to get them on the shelves. It’s kind of mind-boggling, really, and I’m not sure why someone hasn’t made a TV show about it,” he shared. Complete article Mike Rowe is worth $30 million, yet he hasn't spent his life working menial jobs, as his propaganda indicates.
