Which Alternative Ukrainian Reality Is Real?

From the beginning of the Russian invasion, if not years sooner during the 2014 coup, or even before that there have been several versions of the history of this conflict, most biased or incomplete. After looking closer at this I can't guarantee that the Russian version is credible, and I don't support their invasion; however, there's no doubt that our mainstream media and government are covering up many problems with their support for the Ukrainians, including the fact that they supported a coup in 2014, and this conflict never would have happened without that.

Of course, the most recent news about the invasion of Ukraine over the past year is important; however, there's a massive amount of propaganda to make it seem like anyone that disagrees with the political establishment must be "Russian propaganda" and it's been very effective. For this reason the forgotten history, and in many cases, the way the same traditional media reported on Ukraine before the invasion, including the fact that they had some powerful white supremacists in the military, is very important, and shows that they haven't been consistent or honest with all their reporting, so we should be highly skeptical of claims that everyone that disagrees with the establishment is "Russian propaganda." One of the most brazen claims is that there are few or no Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, repeated by most traditional media, especially Jim Acosta, who has repeatedly denied the existence of any Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, even though there were many reports, which I'll get to below, from credible sources, including traditional media before they stopped covering it after the Russian invasion. There are numerous articles from traditional media or claims by politicians that now support arming Ukrainian side acknowledging this before the Russian invasion that are now in total denial of this, while some of the evidence is being removed from the web, and in at least some cases are only available on the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive.

When Russia first invaded last February I wasn't aware of the vast majority of this, and in my first article on the subject, If You Care About Children, It Must Include Victims Of Both Russia & the USA 03/20/2022 I focused primarily on the double standard of demonizing our political opponents for targeting children while ignoring when our government or allies did the same thing, and I quickly realized that we weren't getting the full story, starting when they briefly pointed out that some of the Eastern parts of Ukraine weren't even controlled by the central government, but were controlled by sepratists, who as it turns out were fighting the Ukraine government for eight years, with very little media coverage about it. I also reviewed Ukraine on Fire 08/19/2021 and War with Russia? Stephen F. Cohen and Dan Rather in Conversation with Katrina Vanden Heuvel 06/17/2019 which covered the history of Ukraine during the 2014 coup that was virtually ignored by most media outlets and the political establishment. They were pretending a large portion of their recent history never exists at all and that there was never any provocation by Russia to invade, which the closer I looked, clearly turned out to be false, not that I think it justifies the invasion. But we need accurate information to make rational decisions about foreign policy; and we're not getting it.

As I said previously one of the most brazen examples of denial of the fact that there are Neo-Nazis is when politicians or the media reported on it before the Russian invasion then did an about face and pretended they never admitted there were white supremacists controlling large portions of the military in Ukraine as pointed out in Forty Democrats Labeled Ukraine's Azov Battalion a Terrorist Organization in 2019 06/23/2022 which cites a letter to Mike Pompeo labeling the Azov Battalion as a terrorist organization with a mixture of good claims that were supported by other sources and a couple exaggerations, which were refuted by other sources, but the point is that these forty Democrats were making one claim before the Russian invasion and another one after it, and they took their letter off the internet so it's no longer available, at least not directly. Fortunately the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive saved a copy of the letter which can still be retrived (last saved on December 9 2020) this was saved over five dozen times between October 2019 and December 2020, and hasn't been saved since then. We know that it must have been taken down between December 9 2020 and some time in 2022. I first checked it in the last couple months of 2022, but it's a reasonably good guess that it was taken down before Kanekoa News wrote their article and used the Wayback Machine instead of the online copy, and my best guess is that it was taken down shortly after the Russian invasion, when someone realized they would be on the wrong side of the narrative. One article by Michael Colborne pointed out some of the true claims and corrected some of the exaggerations or false claims, including the claim that the "Christchurch shooter," Brenton Harrison Tarrant, trained with the Azov battalion, which he claims is almost certainly false, and several other researchers came to the same conclusion; however, Michael Colborne still concludes that Azov is a an extremist terror group, and that this backfired, since it gave their critics the opportunity to discredit part of the story and imply that the rest of their claims are also false, which is a very common propaganda tactic.

This is just a small fraction of the evidence showing that the media often reported on Neo-Nazi ties before the Russian invasion but rarely if ever discuss it since then although most people have forgotten most of the stories, assuming they ever paid attention to them, but fortunately some people like Birrion Sondahl have reported on them and compiled a partial list of stories from before the Russian invasion in Ukrainian Nazism 10/23/2022 which removes any doubt about the fact that they have plenty of Nazis and many of them are in positions of power, especially in the Azov Battalion. One of the articles he cites, Ukraine underplays role of far right in conflict 12/13/2014 points out, once again, that there are exaggerations or outright lies on both sides, reporting that none of the far right Neo-Nazi groups got more than 5% of the vote, but if they were combined they would have, showing those in total denial and those claiming the Neo-Nazis have total control of the government are both wrong. However, this article also points out the Azov Battalion is dominated by Neo-Nazis. There are many other articles showing that even though the Neo-Nazis are a modest percentage of the population, they're a much larger percentage of those in the military fighting in the East, and those supporting the coup in 2014.

Perhaps one of the most notable Neo-Nazis in Ukraine was Andriy Biletsky who founded the Azov Battalion in 2014, which was all Neo-Nazis at the time, and to the best of my knowledge, it's still mostly if not entirely Neo-Nazis now. As BBC claims the Neo-Nazis were unable to break 5% in 2014, but it appears that they increased their support by 2016 enabling him to serve in parliment until 2019, when they were no longer able to break 5%. He also founded Social-National Assembly, which is essentially a Neo-Nazi organization, reversing the order so the word Social comes first. He wrote "The Word of the White Leader" which is a White Supremacist brochure, which is now hard to find on the internet, but tehre are still at least two copies written in Ukrainian, one that is only available on the Internet Archive, shown below along with a partial translation into English for the beginning. This shows they're not a large percentage of Ukrainians, but adds to the evidence that they have much more influence within the military, and his brochure also adds to the evidence that they had more influence on the 2014 coup which almost certainly wouldn't have happened without the Neo-Nazis, and without the coup there wouldn't have been an eight year civil war in the East or a Russian invasion last year.

On a few rare occasions even traditional media outlets like CNN admit Ukraine has a problem with Neo-Nazis, despite pundits like Jim Acosta that are in total denial, like this article, A far-right battalion has a key role in Ukraine’s resistance. Its Neo-Nazi history has been exploited by Putin 03/30/2022, but they keep coverage of this to a minimum, and I don't recall any mention of it on their Cable shows. They also try to make it seem like Russia is at fault for using it for propaganda purposes instead of arguing that they should stand up to the Neo-Nazis. Furthermore, near the end of this article it also shows a picture of child soldiers with a brief caption saying they're "at a paramilitary camp," presumably training for war. At about the same time there was an alleged Tweet from CNN which turned out to be fake and they were quick to point this out in various fact checking articles including CNN Did Not Tweet About Child Soldiers in Ukraine 04/16/2022; however, if you get to the end of the article, which most people seeing debunking fact checkers probably never read, it admits that even though the Tweet is false, the use of child soldiers, as young as seven to fifteen years old, in 2017 was real, and there's little reason to believe that it stopped since then, especially after the Russian invasion, as the following excerpt from the original article in 2018 indicates:

The Azovets camp, for children aged seven to 15, is organised by Azov Batallion, a radical Ukrainian nationalist militia founded by volunteers following the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014, and swiftly incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine. Azov leads the fight against pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine — a conflict that is now entering its fifth year. Complete article

Traditional media has been quick to debunk claims against Ukraine and slow to confirm portions of the claims that are true, assuming they confirm those at all; and there have been at least two more examples of credible claims of using child soldiers in Ukraine by Ukraine or both sides, including Ukraine conflict: Child soldiers join the fight 11/26/2014, written by the BBC which claims that both sides were using child soldiers in the beginning of the civil war, less than a year after the coup, and As the Russia-Ukraine heats up, media lionises child soldiers carrying assault weapons: All you need to know 03/07/2022, which focuses mostly if not entirely on child soldiers used by Ukraine, which they claim is continuing after the Russian invasion. No doubt there will be more information on this subject if you Google "Child soldiers in Ukraine," including some claims that are allegedly false, so some fact checking is advised.

Sam Biddle from the Intercept has reported on bias in social media when he wrote Facebook Allows Praise of Neo-Nazi Ukrainian Battalion If It Fights Russian Invasion 02/24/2023 which shows an obvious bias about censorship without adequate fact checking. I'm no fan of white supremacists, but instead of censoring them when, and only when I disagree with them, it seems far more rational and honest to debunk them when they're wrong and let the public come to their own conclusions without relying on censorship. There are also more reports of atrocities on both sides reported from the government before the Russian invasion that are now being ignored by the media including The UKRAINE 2017 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT and the 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Ukraine both which show atrocities committed by Ukraine which are not being reported in a high profile manner. For now they remain online, unlike some other claims, including the letter from the Congressmen mentioned above but, in case they're removed in the future, we can check the Wayback Machine which saved copies including 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Ukraine (Copy from the Wayback Machine captured 4/8/2020 which is currently mostly if not entirely identacal, but worth saving in case it's changed like other articles that have been removed.)

But most people aren't aware of a this due to massive amounts of censorship, which, in some ways, may be much more subtle in the United States than it is in Ukraine, at least to those not accustomed to checking alternative news outlets, which may be a significant majority of the public. However, the censorship may be much more obvious in Ukraine, and some news outlets in the United States are reporting on this, although except for alternative media outlets they're keeping the reporting on this to a minimum like this NPR article, which doesn't get nearly as much attention as Network News or Cable News, Zelenskyy has consolidated Ukraine's TV outlets and dissolved rival political parties 07/08/2022 The reporting on this is minimal in mainstream media, while those checking alternative media are much more likely to hear more about it, but even many alternative media outlets are supporting the establishment view, so many people may still be unaware of this censorship, and the fact that they're banning political parties from people with certain views, especially those of Russian descent that have been persecuted throughout the Civil War since the 2014 coup.

The propaganda supporting this war has been as relentless as most, if not all other wars, and there's no significant opposing views among the six corporations controlling well over 90% of the media in the United States. Furthermore, they have, as I said, support from some of the leading alternative media outlets, and a significant number of social media influences, whether they're being paid or not. We've been told dozens of times that "In war the first casualty is the truth," which has been repeated by many sources including Aeschylus, who said this twenty five hundred years ago, and when we're not at war few if any people ever dispute this, yet when we are at war, or in this case supporting a proxy war, few people are willing to acknowledge this and listen to both sides of the conflict and attempt to figure what the real truth is.

I've seen this on numerous occasions on Social media when I tried to cover both views, routinely telling people that I don't support the invasion, but there are legitimate doubts about the version of truth being presented by mainstream media. In many cases, when I say I oppose the Russian invasion, supporters of Ukraine are willing to listen, but then once I try to discuss the 2014 coup, the Civil War that went on for eight years before the Russian invasion, or the fact that there are Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, often with mainstream sources from before the Russian invasion, there have been numerous people accusing me of being a Russian propagandist and claiming everything I say that they don't like, or that disagrees with the mainstream media narrative is false, and on several occasion they've blocked me. Other people trying to sort through the truth have told similar stories. They often trust the mainstream media propaganda that has come out since the Russian invasion, but refuse to listen to people citing older articles from the same sources from before the invasion that provide blatantly opposing views, like the letter from forty Congressmen mentioned above.

There should be little doubt that the reason so many people fall for this propaganda is that they're routinely accompanied by very effective appeals to propaganda which many peace activists have been trying to warn us against for decades; but perhaps one of the people to describe this the best isn't a peace activist, but a war criminal, who admitted the tactics he used while on trial for his life almost eighty years ago. Despite his credibility problems Herman Goering made a good point, which can be confirmed from more reliable sources in an interview with Gustave Gilbert as indicated in the following excerpt:

Gilbert recorded Goering's observations that the common people can always be manipulated into supporting and fighting wars by their political leaders:

We got around to the subject of war again and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction.

"Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."

"There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." Complete article

We need to recognize that the most reliable source of news hasn't been either the government or traditional news outlets controlled by Wall Street corporations. But even these news outlets have shown they don't tell a consistent version of history, which many alternative media outlets have shown. Good researchers have shown that all wars, at least since World War II, have been based on lies, but the truth rarely gets to the majority of the public until after it's too late, and those relying on mainstream media often don'e even get it then. Even World War II was based at least partly on lies; most people will agree that Hitler had to be stopped; but most people still don't know that many powerful people actually supported him before the war and considered him the lesser evil compared to the USSR. Our government routinely supports future enemies, then tries to rewrite history afterwards.

ANDRIJ BILETSKY: A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Andriy Biletskyi was born on August 5, 1979 in the city of Kharkiv in a Ukrainian family. The father comes from the family of Zaporozhian Cossacks, and the mother - from a Ukrainian noble family, to which Vasyl Lukashevich, the founder of the "Little Russian Society" (1821–1822), belonged. In 2003, Andriy got married, having founded his own family, which in 2007 was supplemented by a son, Oleksandr.

Faculty of History of Kharkiv National University named after V. N. Karazina Biletsky graduated with a red diploma. His diploma research was devoted to the activities of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and was recognized as one of the best student works of Ukraine in 2001. The informal supervision of his scientific activities was carried out by the well-known Ukrainian historian Yaroslav Dashkevich. After graduating from the University, he worked as a teacher at Kharkiv universities, continued to study the military history of Ukraine (researched the conscript army of Kyivan Rus). But later, priority was given to creation, not to the study of history.

Since his youth, he was actively involved in sports, had the 1st youth division in boxing. Trained in the sports club "Minamoto clan" under the leadership of Gennady Minka. Subsequently, he engaged in knife fighting, practical shooting and other sports, in which he achieved considerable success. These skills helped put the training system in the organizations headed by him at a high level. But later, preference was given to fighting in the streets, not in the rings.

Andriy Biletskyi took an active part in the nationalist movement since his student days. In 1999, together with a group of Kharkiv nationalist athletes, he made an attempt to go to war in Kosovo to fight Islamic expansion in the Balkans. In 2001, he took part in the March riots in Kyiv as part of the "Ukraine without Kuchma" campaign, during which he was detained by the police and placed under administrative arrest. Because of this, the SBU tried to force the management of the University to expel Biletskyi from the university.

Since 2002, he headed the Kharkiv detachment of the "Trident" organization named after S. Bandera. Subsequently, he cooperated with the Ukrainian Conservative Party. In 2003, he began active cooperation with the Kharkiv branch of the SNPU and effectively supported opposition to the liberalization of the SNPU and its transformation into the "Svoboda" VO.

After the dissolution in Ukraine of the "Patriot of Ukraine" Association for the Assistance of the Armed Forces and the Military Medical University under the SNPU, Andriy Biletskyi created a new, independent of any party structures, the "Patriot of Ukraine" Organization, which has been its constant commander since the beginning of its existence. The first members of the Organization were young fighters from Kharkiv branches of SNPU, UNA-UNSO and "Trident", who clearly saw the decline of nationalist structures of the 20th century and the need to create a new, truly effective nationalist force of the 21st century.

Since the beginning of the Organization's activities, Andriy Biletskyi has been planning, coordinating and directly participating in all of its activities, including direct actions. He personally led almost all groups of fighters carrying out operations to identify and destroy drug-trafficking points, detain illegal migrants, etc. Managed all mass actions of the Organization (from marches and rallies to acts of civil disobedience and mass force actions). During the events of October 18, 2008, he was at the head of the attacking column and was arrested together with all the fighters of the Organization.

The acquired social and political experience and innate qualities of the Leader allowed Andriy Biletsky to act as the initiator of the formation and lead a united organized nationalist front — the Social National Assembly (SNA), around which effective nationalist organizations and groups united.

In the circle of social-nationalists, since that time he has been called the Leader. This is how the Ukrainian nationalists titled before that only Yevhen Konovalts, the initial commander of the UVO, the founder and Leader of the OUN.

In a few years, the SNA was transformed into a powerful political force, which became one of the biggest threats to the current ruling regime, which provoked massive political repression against the organized Social-Nationalist movement. After the arrest of the leaders of the capital branch of the SNA (the "Vasylkiv Terrorists" case), the leader organized and led picketing of SBU offices throughout Ukraine, in some cities state security offices were thrown with smoke grenades and blocked. The anti-Ukrainian regime also did not hesitate to respond - an armed attack was carried out on the Kharkiv office of the SNA, which, however, was successfully repelled (the case of "Defenders of Rymarska"). Organizational officers who repelled the attack were arrested, and an attempt was made on Biletskyi. But despite everything, the Organization, led by its unchanging Leader, stubbornly refused to capitulate to the regime. So, in December 2011, Andrii Biletskyi was arrested. Since that time, he has been leading the Social Nationalist movement from behind the bars of the Kholodnohorsk prison for almost two years. However, even in prison, he does not give up - he establishes a system of mutual communication between imprisoned nationalists, inspires and coordinates his brothers at large to continue the work he started.

For almost two years, the dogs of the occupation regime have been holding our Leader captive. It is inappropriate to talk about the reasons for his arrest. Because he is not being held behind bars for the charges that have been officially brought against him. With such an evidence base against him, there is no reason to keep him in the pretrial detention center. The fact that he is still deprived of his liberty proves only one thing - he is feared. A pack of gray yard dogs, who have neither honor nor conscience, and live exclusively on scraps from the budget, like the fire-fearing leader of a pack of free wolves, who despises their canine sycophancy. The leader is imprisoned because he is a symbol of our movement; the only one capable of overthrowing this rotten anti-social regime of anti-national occupation. Lying dogs in blue uniforms know what he means to us, so we invite all of us to remember who the Leader is to us. If Lauria is right there are major doubts about satellite photos claiming the bodies were there for weeks, assuming they do claim that; and that raises doubts about why they didn't report on those bodies weeks earlier. https://consortiumnews.com/.../questions-abound-about.../ The reports of satellite photos weeks earlier appear to be true, or at least partly true, but they raise other questions. The reason they may not have reported it earlier might be the photos were to vague to identify. However, as Joe Lauria and at least one other source pointed out there was a smiling mayor Anatolii Fedoruk saying it was a “glorious day” when the troops withdrew, but if the photos and bodies were real, then this makes no sense, since he should have been outraged and horrified. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense for Russia to leave behind such an obvious propaganda opportunity. Nor does an incompetent effort to create the propaganda make sense.
