Walmart Crime Report September 2023

Walmart had at least seven more shootings on their property, or related to their business in September 2023; the first two weren't actually on their property, but one of them was by a shoplifter in a neighboring parking lot where he opened fire after being chased by the police and another was a shooting just beyond their property where the shooters came to Walmart afterwards, and caused a panic. One of them was a murder-suicide, by an employee and the victim may have also been an employee, although it's unclear if she worked at the same store; another one was when a police officer shot a suspect that had allegedly killed a woman before fleeing to Walmart. There were also several other injuries from these shootings, and another fatal shooting unrelated to Walmart in the woods near their property; and a shooting by someone wearing a Walmart vest at a gas station injuring a person and a dog. This brings the total number of shootings for the year to more than a hundred, with three months to go, making this the eighth consecutive year with over a hundred shootings, and no reason to believe they'll go down much.

There were also at least half a dozen gun related crimes at Walmart last month, including a few false alarms about active shooters, which police are getting very quick at exposing to minimize panic, in some cases even when they are shootings, like the murder suicide, which happened very quickly, and the police were quick to deny it was ever an active shooter, even though people there at the time had good reason to consider it that. Several of these gun related crimes were either robberies, or domestic disputes.

In addition to the two people killed in a murder suicide, and the woman killed by a suspect elsewhere, before being shot by police at Walmart, there was one more death from an accident, and nine bodies found at separate store, most if not all are not considered suspicious, but there should be some concern about why there are so many, or the fact that although this is more than usual, it's not much more, and they find dead bodies on their property virtually every month, with an average of about three or four bodies per month. Regardless of why, this brings the total of bodies found or people killed at or near Walmart to at least thirteen.

Walmart, Target and the traditional media is obsessively lying about the reasons for their closing of stores, and the causes of their increased crime problems, and the evidence of this isn't hard to find assuming they look for it. According to one source, Nobody likes self-checkout. Here’s why it’s everywhere 07/10/2022 they first experimented with it in 1986, but "It took a decade for Walmart (WMT) to test self checkout. Only in the early 2000s did the trend pick up more widely at supermarkets, which were looking to cut costs during the 2001 recession and faced stiff competition from emergent superstores and warehouse clubs." As far as I can tell, my local stores weren't dominated by self-check out until the past ten or so years, and the one I use most still doesn't have it, and their store design makes shoplifting on a large scale difficult if not impossible, since they don't have self-checkout, and customers have to walk past the service desk if they try to leave with a full cart, which is the way all department or grocery stores were designed thirty to fifty years ago.

The article I just cited also acknowledged that theft increased with self-checkout, which should be obvious; but the majority of news stories about the subject have been repeating misleading or false claims from CEOs without any scrutiny, claiming that there's a large increase in theft, which is contributing to the closing of stores or increased prices, implying it's inexplicable, which is false. They also try to claim that they need more help from the police, without acknowledging the fact that their own policies created this problem, and simply reversing them could solve it. Another article posted below claims Costco's CEO claims it's well documented that self-checkout is a major contributing factor to theft, but it's not mentioned until at least half-way through the article, and the vast majority of news stories don't even mention it showing how bad a job the media is doing, as well as Walmart and many other big-box stores. It's taken an enormous number of complaints going back years, and still going, before there was any sign they were reconsidering self-checkout, but the month before last they experimented with full service in an Canadian store, and last month they restored cashiers in a couple New Mexico stores, but there are still signs they're resisting these few changes and even expending it more elsewhere. In one case they're even opening a police substation in their store in Atlanta Georgia, with no acknowledgement of the fact that their own policies create their crime problems. And there also continue to be an enormous number of false accusations as well as real theft.

They also had at least a couple large brawls at their stores, either in the food section or at the self-checkout area; a murder suspect chased through their store; a sex offender accused of beating a dog and punching a woman; more robberies; lawsuits for false arrests or accusations; an attempted theft that also attempted to blow up an ATM; and much more insanity.

There self-checkouts have also attracted a lot of scam artists putting credit or debit card skimmers on registers to steal data, and many banks don't take responsibility, while some do, but Walmart rarely ever does, nor do they make their equipment secure.

They also had a small plane hitting a car by their store; and in addition to the fatal accident they had over half a dozen, if not over a dozen major auto crashes, hit and runs, police chases starting at their stores, stolen cars, and even a stolen excavator that took down power lines before crashing into a Walmart.

Walmart also had at least four more fires, including a UTV that may have been an accident and at least two major arsons, one doing an enormous amount of damage and closing the store indefinitely. The other arson was by an emotionally disturbed person mad at his mother and price-gouging.

They also had at least one knife attack, which is fewer than usual, although more can go unreported; attacks by people dressed up as KKK members; numerous other assaults, large thefts, including one for over $60K; attacks on police; and many other crimes, most of which get little media attention, especially the minor ones.

There are reports that a weight loss product they sold may be fatal, and recalls of cakes that may contain unlabeled alogens, and Cantaloupes with Salmonella. Other defective products have been found in their store, including a possible ruptured cyst in meat they sold, and reports about how little if any of their food products are expected to be fresh, especially from the bakery, which is all frozen as many workers admit. They were also caught with unjustified overcharges, including a double tax when the rate was changed in Alabama, where they charged both the old and the new tax.

It wasn't that long ago that Walmart workers finally convinced them to increase their pay by a modest amount, but now they're cutting them back again, at least for new employees, but in the past, when corporations did this they often tried to either cut pay for all workers or find excuses to let higher paid ones go. They continue having the highest rate of employees on welfare of any other companies, even though they get financial incentives to hire those on SNAP without paying them enough to get off SNAP, which means our tax payer money is subsidizing poverty wages.

Walmart is constantly being sued for labor practices, this month for employees with disabilities, and for ignoring rampant sexual harassment, both of which have happened repeatedly in the past. They settled one lawsuit for discrimination, which is unusual, but few details are available about the terms, which is common, since corporations routinely ask for confidentiality clauses so other people with potential cases can't find out what they might get or if they have a case.

Several people have reported online that Walmart is "price gouging" or that prices have sky-rocketed in the past few years. If there's any doubt about the political establishment serving corporate interests, Walmart and Pfizer executives were invited to discuss the refugee crisis, but, as usual, there's little indication those looking out for the best interests of the working class or defending the rights of immigrants have been consulted. Corporations with financial conflicts of interests are routinely consulted on policies, but the rest of us are ignored.

A couple more activists managed to vandalize Nancy Walton Laurie's $300 million super-yacht again letting everyone know that the richest people are doing the most environmental damage to the planet, while the poorest are the ones paying the price, but it's the protesters that get arrested, not those doing the environmental damage, although they were released quickly this time, and the damage was minimal. But the rich are now terrorized that they will keep being exposed, as they should be.

If you're embarrassed because of a "clothing malfunction" or because you're forced to try on a bra on top of your shirt outside the dressing room where anyone could see you, would you post it on social media where it would go viral? One girl who wasn't allowed to try on a bra in the dressing room and another girl who went "commando" on a day that there was a big tear in her sweat pants that she didn't noticed, decided this was a good idea.

How often have you accidentally bought a display cake at Walmart? Do you think the person that did likes the taste of Styrofoam?

How often do you think African pythons shop at Walmart? Why would anyone object?

How many people take their pet squirrels shopping with them at Walmart, climbing on their shoulder? Why would people be outraged by that either?

How can there be any doubt that people do much more damage than animals?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in September 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Some customers see double grocery tax at Alabama Walmarts after glitch in system 09/01/2023

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The newly reduced grocery tax went into effect Friday, dropping from 4% to 3%, but this change was not without its challenges.

Walmart says there was a mistake in its system Friday charging customers the old 4% grocery tax on top of the new 3% tax. The company says some stores fixed this but others are still working on it, hoping to have all stores fixed by Friday night.

Walmart put out a statement addressing the double taxing, saying:

“Earlier today, some Walmart customers and Sam’s Club members across Alabama were incorrectly overcharged sales tax while shopping with us. Effective Sept. 1, the sales tax rate on food decreased by one percentage point statewide. Our systems mistakenly charged both the old rate and the new rate at the time of sale. The situation is being corrected and we’re asking customers who used cash while shopping with us today to check their receipts. If two separate sales tax amounts appear on the receipt, customers should bring it their local Walmart store or Sam’s Club and speak with a member of management to get a refund for the higher of the two taxes. Customers who used credit cards and other forms of payment will receive a notification their refunds were automatically applied.” Complete article

Vine City Walmart set to reopen in May 2024 will include Atlanta Ga. Police substation 09/01/2023

The Vine City Walmart Supercenter that closed last year after alleged arson is slated to reopen in May 2024 as a Neighborhood Market with a pharmacy and grocery store, ensuring people in the historic Westside neighborhood have access to fresh food.

The store will also include an Atlanta Police Department substation where an officer’s presence is intended to prevent crime, according to city and Walmart officials.

The announcement of the Walmart reopening was made at an Aug. 29 community meeting at the Abernathy Center at Historic West Hunter Street Church, a spiritual and strategic meeting place during the civil rights movement. Attending the meeting was a slate of Walmart executives and city officials, including Mayor Andre Dickens and City Councilmember Byron Amos.

Dickens recalled telling Walmart officials about the “need and necessity” of reopening the store on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Without the store, the community would become a food desert. Complete article

Walmart still fighting Burlington Wisc. tax bill despite Supreme Court ruling 09/03/2023

BURLINGTON — Despite a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling on the “dark store” property tax issue, Walmart is continuing a court fight with the City of Burlington over the retail giant’s local tax bill.

Circuit Judge David Paulson has scheduled a jury trial starting July 30, 2024, on Walmart’s contention that the city is inflating the taxable value of the retailer’s store at 1901 Milwaukee Ave.

The store’s current assessed value is $8.6 million, but Walmart argues that the property should be valued at $4.5 million. The difference is about $80,000 a year in property taxes. Complete article

HOLD UP I’m a Walmart shopper and I was called a thief after I bought my son a hoverboard – security has gone too far 09/05/2023

A MOM has alleged she was called a thief by a Walmart worker after she bought her son a hoverboard.

The customer documented her story in a five-part TikTok series featuring videos of the employee in question, police involvement, and herself narrating calls with the Walmart corporate office.

Destiny Gonzalez (@gonzalezdestiny42) alleges that a Walmart employee checked her receipt and then took the hoverboard she bought for her son into the back of the store.

The worker came back without the item and denied that she had bought one, Gonzalez claimed.

The TikToker's first installment of the saga features a video of a Walmart manager going back and forth over the situation with Gonzalez.

"Can you reprint me my receipt?" Gonzalez is heard asking multiple times over in the video as she tries to prove her purchase.

The employee then insists that he has already given it to her or her son and tells them to check the floor to see if they dropped it.

"No, you're getting too argumentative," the employee responds half-way through the video after she requests the receipt be reprinted again.

Gonzalez goes on to explain to the worker that she had shown another employee her bank account, which reflected a transaction from the store for the exact amount of the hoverboard, $104.82. Complete article

‘That sh*t increased over 100%’: Walmart shopper shows how high Great Value prices have risen since 2020 09/05/2023

‘But jobs want to pay 10 dollars an hour still no benefits.’

The reasonably low prices of Walmart’s Great Value brand items have always appealed to shoppers. When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck in early 2020, causing the cost of groceries to inflate , Walmart and its partners certainly took a hit.

How great of a hit was examined in a viral video posted to TikTok by user Curtis (@__curtdogg), who compared the prices of several staple Great Value items from 2020 to today.

He shared an August Facebook post in which a woman showed her Walmart mobile order placed in 2020. The items in her cart cost significantly less that year, including a family pack of mesquite smoked turkey breast that more than doubled in price in 2023. Complete article

Walmart makes a first-ever change to prevent crimes in superstore 09/06/2023

The Supercenter will reopen in 2024 and may look unrecognizable in an effort to prevent the rise of retail crimes.

What do stock brokers in 1929, travel agents in 2020, and retail workers in 2023 all have in common?

They were all in the wrong sector at the wrong time.

It's no secret that it's been really tough to be a retailer in a post-pandemic world. Inventory shrink, or a loss of goods due to shoplifting, fraud, and errors is at an industry-wide high. It's getting harder to hire and keep retail workers, as low wages, demanding hours, difficult customers and workplace violence make roles wholly unappealing.

And crime and violence are on the rise. A recent Retail Workplace Survey by Loss Prevention Magazine indicates that 60% of retail workers saw some form of violence on the job over the past 12 months.

Of all of the retailers hit by a rising tide of crime, Walmart (WMT) - Get Free Report may be hit the hardest. The largest retailer in America has locations within 10 miles of 90% of the population. It's a cheap and convenient place to shop. But that's also what's hindered it. .....

Walmart Cuts Starting Pay for Some New Hires 09/07/2023

Walmart is paying some new store workers less than it would have three months ago, a sign that employers are seeking to cut labor costs as the once-hot market for hourly staff cools.

The country’s largest private employer changed its wage structure for hourly workers in mid-July, according to documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and store workers.

Under the new structure most new hires will make the lowest possible hourly wage for that store. In the past, some new hires, such as those who collect items for online orders, would have made slightly more than other new hires such as cashiers.

Walmart’s minimum hourly wage of $14 remains unchanged and still varies by region, for example starting at $17 in some stores. Existing workers don’t receive pay cuts.

Walmart said the change in pay structure allows workers to move between work groups such as food, registers, stocking or digital fulfillment without pay impacts, according to documents given to some store workers.

“This will allow for better staffing throughout the store," said one of the documents. Over 50,000 workers received raises because their pay was below the new minimums, the company said in the documents. Complete article

Activists spray red paint over billionaire Walmart heiress’s superyacht for a second time 09/08/2023

CNN — Spanish climate activists sprayed red paint across a superyacht owned by billionaire Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie in Barcelona on Friday, the second time the yacht has been the target of protests in the past two months.

Two activists from the climate groups Scientist Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion accessed Marina Port Vell, a dock for superyachts, at 7 a.m. local time on Friday, according to a spokesperson for the organization.

They sprayed biodegradable red paint onto the superyacht before unfurling a banner reading: “Billionaires should not exist.”

“At the end of another exceptional summer in terms of record temperatures and extreme weather events, the richest 1% of people on the planet continue to pollute more than the poorest 50%. Mega-yachts are one of the most obvious examples of a lifestyle that is unsustainable for the planet,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Marina Port Vell said that the boat had not been damaged in Friday’s action.

“After a quick action on behalf of the security team, the incident has been corrected and the boat is now in a perfect state,” the spokesperson told CNN.

The activists were detained by police at the marina for three hours before being released, according to a spokesperson for Scientist Rebellion. CNN has contacted the Port Police for comment.

Laurie’s yacht was also targeted in Ibiza in July. Activists from the environmental group Futuro Vegetal sprayed the yacht with red and black paint and held up a banner reading: “You Consume Others Suffer.”

The luxuries enjoyed by the world’s wealthiest people – from superyachts to private jets – are increasingly the focus of climate protests because of their heavy climate impact. Complete article

‘I’m forced to try this damn bra on outside of the fitting room where everyone can see me’: Walmart customer says she was blocked from trying on bra because it would ‘touch her skin’ 09/05/2023

'But they let me try on the shirt that also touched my skin.'

A Walmart customer says the store’s policy regarding trying on undergarments, bras specifically, makes absolutely no sense.

Tanya Thomas (@tanyathomas73) says she had to resort to trying on a bra on top of her clothes outside of the dressing room after she was blocked from trying it on in the dressing room.

“So, you’re not allowed to try on intimates at Walmart anymore in the fitting room ’cause it touches your skin. So, I’m forced to try this damn bra on outside of the fitting room, where everybody could see me, because it touches your skin. But they let me try on the shirt that also touched my skin, and the pants that also touched my a**, but they wouldn’t let me try on this bra on my t*ts. Make it make sense,” she says.

The TikToker also claimed in a text overlay that the worker who stopped her from trying on the bra called a supervisor on her. .....

What’s really strange, however, is that Thomas said she was told by the employee that it was perfectly fine for her to try the bras on at home, where they would presumably touch her skin, and, if they didn’t fit, she could bring them back to return the items. “That’s the part that left me laughing! she said I can take it home try it on & return the bras!” Thomas wrote in the comments section of the video. Walmart's corporate employees are getting a generative AI assistant while Amazon and Apple are restricting AI in the workplace 09/05/2023

Walmart is giving its corporate employees an AI "assistant" tool to speed up productivity.

The retailer is embracing AI while other companies limit employees' use of AI in the workplace.

The retailer already uses AI in its stores and customer service, and is hoping to leverage AI in its supply chain.

Retail giants like Amazon, Apple, and Samsung have restricted its employees from using AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT – but Walmart is embracing it with open arms.

Walmart is expanding AI efforts in its workplace with a new AI "assistant." It's one of many generative AI tools the company has already employed across to its 50,000 corporate employees.

The generative AI tool, which includes a "My Assistant" feature, will summarize documents and speed up creating and drafting projects, Walmart's Chief People Officer Donna Morris and Executive Vice President of New Business and Emerging Technologies Cheryl Ainoa wrote in a blog post. WA opioid settlement with Wal-Mart means more than $1 million coming to Tri-Cities 09/08/2023

One of the world’s largest companies will be paying $3.1 billion for their role in the opioid crisis, and millions from that settlement is coming to the Tri-Cities.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced this week that in the coming months $62.6 million will be coming to Washington cities and counties from the state’s share of the opioid settlement with Wal-Mart.

The retailer is the second largest in the world and one of three major pharmacy chains, including CVS and Walgreens, to agree to multi-billion dollar settlements for their role in overprescribing opioid medication.

Wal-Mart agreed to the settlement last November. Ferguson said that local shares should be hitting coffers within months, according to the news release.

“This is real money that funds real resources that will save lives,” Ferguson said in the release. “But I am not done here. My office still litigates active cases, which we will use to hold all companies that fueled the opioid epidemic accountable. My team is working to bring even more money and resources back to affected Washington communities.” Complete article

Did Walmart Kill Mississippi's Small Businesses? 09/11/2023

This post includes content written by AI. Mississippi, the Magnolia State, with its rich history and diverse business landscape, has witnessed significant changes over the years. As Walmart, the multinational retail giant, expanded its footprint, many small businesses in Mississippi shuttered. The question remains: Did Walmart play the primary role in the decline of Mississippi's small businesses or were there other factors at play?

Walmart's Expansion in Mississippi

In the late 20th century, Walmart began an aggressive expansion, and like many other states, Mississippi saw the emergence of these big-box stores. With Walmart's one-stop shopping solution offering everything from groceries to clothing, it rapidly became a favorite among consumers, especially those looking for convenience and competitive prices.

The company's sheer volume allowed it to offer prices most local businesses couldn't match. For many Mississippi residents, the allure of a single location to fulfill various needs, combined with lower prices, made Walmart an obvious choice.

The Impact on Small Businesses

It's undeniable that many local businesses felt the pressure as Walmart stores became prevalent. The retail giant's ability to negotiate better prices from suppliers, its vast inventory, and the convenience it offered made competing difficult for smaller retailers. Complete article

Apple, Walmart Will Have to Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions Under Proposed New Ca. Law 09/13/2023

The bill requires companies in California with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion to report greenhouse gas emissions data starting in 2026, with phased rollouts for different emission categories.

Approximately 5,400 companies, including major corporations like Walmart, Apple, ExxonMobil, and Chevron, would be affected by the legislation.

The bill aims to ensure that companies provide a comprehensive account of their emissions, including those generated indirectly or through their supply chains.

California legislators have approved a bill that will require some of the biggest U.S.-based companies to disclose annual greenhouse gas emissions.

The Senate Bill 253, or the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, passed a 48-20 Assembly vote on Monday and then passed with a 27-8 Senate vote on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported. Now, the bill is awaiting a final decision from California Governor, Gavin Newsom.

If signed into law, the bill will require the California Air Resources Board to establish regulations by 2025 that call on all public and private companies with over $1 billion in annual revenue to disclose emissions in three scopes, beginning with scopes 1 and 2 in 2026, and scope 3 emissions reporting starting in 2027. Walmart sued by EEOC over allegations of discrimination to employees with disabilities 09/13/2023

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Walmart is facing a federal lawsuit after the company was accused of discriminating against employees with disabilities, including two former employees in Arkansas.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) lawsuit claims that the Betonville-based retailer violated federal law when it required employees with disabilities to participate in unlawful testing.

The suit claims that Walmart collaborated with a third-party entity in 2015 to create the “Pathways Training Program,” which included a test called the “Pathways Graduation Assessment.” By 2017, the suit alleges that it required its newly-hired hourly employees across the U.S. to complete the program.

The EEOC suit alleges that Walmart terminated employees with disabilities across the nation who failed the test after three attempts even though they were able to satisfactorily perform their jobs. The suit claims that the test was not related to the employee’s job duties or performance. Complete article

Canada man arrested after allegedly stealing over $60k from Walmart stores across the U.S. 09/11/2023

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) - A man from Canada was indicted in U.S. District Court in St. Louis and accused of stealing more than $64,000 in cash from Walmart stores across the country using sleight-of-hand.

According to the indictment, Mohsen Akbari, 37, came to the United States from South Korea on March 1, 2023, with a visitor Visa. Akbari traveled around the country, stealing money from various retail stores using the sleight-of-hand method. He would claim that he and his family collect United States currency, typically $100 bills, and ask the cashier to show him the bills in the cash register so he could examine them. Akbari would then ‘surreptitiously’ place some of the bills into his sleeve or pocket, the indictment says.

The indictment accuses Akbari of stealing about $33,700 from 30 different Walmart stores in nine states from March 23 to June 8, 2023. It also notes he stole a total of $2,420 from a Walmart in St. Peters, Missouri on June 12, 2023, $6,900 from a Granite City, Ill. store on June 13, $420 from an O’Fallon, Missouri store on June 14 and $900 from a store in Warrenton, Missouri the same day.

He also allegedly stole $580 from a Walmart in Eureka, Missouri and $5,100 from an Arnold, Missouri, Walmart on June 15, the indictment says. From June 20 to July 18, Akbari stole $13,992 from seven different Walmart stores in Illinois, Indiana, Virginia and Maryland. Akbari would deposit the money he stole in a U.S. bank account he opened, and then wire funds to his bank accounts in Canada, according to authorities. Complete article

‘They don’t have to pay those employees enough to come off of SNAP’: Florida mom calls out Walmart getting money for hiring low-income workers 09/15/2023

'The only time I ever qualified for SNAP was the 19 months I worked for Walmart.'

A TikTok creator pointed out that Walmart employs Americans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), but often does not pay them enough to get off the government assistance program.

User gigikov (@gigikov), a self-described 30-something Florida mom, said that Walmart takes advantage of SNAP recipients and the government in a stitch with Danielle Kirk. The video has received over 758,000 views and 104,000 likes as of publication.

Gigikov expounds upon the Danielle’s statement that the company “with the most SNAP recipients on their payroll is Walmart.”

“Not only is Walmart the largest employer of SNAP recipients they also receive a work opportunity tax credit for each employee who they hire whose on SNAP,” Gigikov begins. “But the rub is they don’t have to pay those employees enough to come off of SNAP.”

She continues: “For each employee that they hire on SNAP they can receive up to a $9,600 corporate tax credit, and there is no limit on the number of people they can receive that credit for.” Complete article

‘IF YOU KNOW THEN YOU KNOW!!’: Walmart worker has to bring pallet jack in restroom with them 09/16/2023

'I had to bring it outside when I went to smoke.'

One thing that you might not know about Walmart is that its employees are incredibly protective of their pallet jacks.

For context, a “pallet jack” is a device designed to help workers move pallets from one place to another. As Walmart is a chain that stocks many items, these jacks are essential to the everyday dealings of Walmart employees. This necessity breeds a close bond between Walmart workers and their jacks—for example, some users on Reddit claim that their stores have given names to the jacks they love, and hate, the most.

As the diversity in titles would suggest, not all pallet jacks are created equal. Walmart employees have been forced to use jacks that are long past their usefulness, leading to worker frustration and slowdown. So it’s understandable that, when an employee finds a jack they love, they become pretty protective of it. Complete article

Walmart debuts compostable cutlery made in the U.S. 09/14/2023

Walmart is debuting its first store-brand compostable cutlery — and making it cheaper than the plastic kind.

Why it matters: An estimated 40 billion plastic forks, spoons and knives are used and discarded annually, polluting the environment and hurting wildlife, according to Habits of Waste.

Details: Walmart signed up an Orange County, California, startup called beyondGREEN to make the product under its store brand, calling it Great Value Compostable Cutlery.

Founded by immigrant entrepreneur Veejay Patel of India and his sons Rudy and Achyut, beyondGREEN connected with Walmart through Open Call, an annual event where "we bring small and medium size businesses in the U.S. and give them an opportunity to pitch" products made in the U.S., says Jennifer Jackson, Walmart's SVP of merchandising, household essentials.

Great Value Compostable Cutlery will be available starting Thursday in 1,400 Walmart stores in the U.S. in packs of 24 for $1.48 and 48 for $2.96, making it the cheapest cutlery at the store. Complete article

Video of San Antonio woman checking out at Tx. Walmart with pet squirrel goes viral 09/18/2023

The University of Texas at San Antonio got a lot of traction on social media over the weekend, but it has nothing to do with the Roadrunners’ disappointing 37-29 loss to Army on national television Friday.

Instead, it involves a video of a woman spotted with a squirrel at a Walmart near campus.

Woman sues city of Florence, SC police department over November 2022 arrest for shoplifting at Walmart 09/19/2023

FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — A Florence County woman is suing the city of Florence and its police department claiming that she was wrongfully arrested for shoplifting at a Walmart store in August 2022.

Lawyers for Courtney Williams filed the suit on Monday in Florence County Common Pleas Court. She is represented by Pendavris Law LLC.

The lawsuit stems from Williams’ arrest by Florence police on Nov. 22, 2022, after an investigation into a shoplifting incident reported on Aug. 29, 2022. The lawsuit said Williams was identified as a suspect after police met with Walmart employees and reviewed surveillance video.

“Ms. Williams was not anywhere near the Walmart store where the alleged shoplifting occurred,” her lawyers said in a news release. “Despite her complete absence from the scene, Walmart employees, through a grave error, mistakenly identified her as the shoplifter and reported her to the authorities.”

The lawsuit alleges negligence, civil assault and false arrest and seeks compensation for emotional distress, damage to Williams’ reputation and financial losses incurred as a result of her arrest. She was also fired from her job because of her arrest, the lawsuit said.

“It wasn’t until a thorough investigation and surveillance footage review that it was conclusively proven that Ms. Williams had been wrongfully accused,” her lawyers said. “The charges against her were swiftly dismissed, but the damage had already been done.” Complete article

Washington mayor claims she’s being harassed after calling 911 on ‘far right’ activists at Walmart 09/19/2023

Yakima mayor says she was 'unaware of all the nuances of the law' when she called police to report petitioners.

A Washington mayor said she's being harassed after audio from her 911 call to report a group of "far right-wing" petition signature gatherers at Walmart surfaced online.

"There’s some far right-wing petitioners at Walmart, and they don’t — they’re not leaving," Yakima Mayor Janice Deccio can be heard saying in a 911 call from Sept. 3. "Walmart has asked them repeatedly to do so, and the police have not taken them off the premises."

Activists were gathering signatures on six Washington ballot initiatives relating to taxes, parental rights and police pursuits over the Labor Day weekend. The initiatives are funded by a group called Let’s Go Washington, which did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.

A recording of Deccio's 911 call was first shared on YouTube by conservative commentator Glen Morgan last week.

In the call, the dispatcher and a supervisor can be heard telling Deccio that the petitioners have a right to gather signatures on private property under state law and that Walmart would need to obtain a court order to stop them. Complete article

Chicago mayor considers creating city-owned grocery store after Walmart, Whole Foods close stores in the city 09/17/2023

Chicago is exploring a city-owned grocery store after several closed in the past year citing millions in annual losses.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced last week that his administration is exploring a city-owned grocery store as a means of promoting "equitable" access to food, though the plan has drawn criticism from skeptics of a government owned and operated store.

Chicago would become the first major U.S. city to implement a municipally owned grocery store to address food inequity if the proposal advances, the mayor’s office said in a release. Johnson’s office said Wednesday that it’s working with the Economic Security Project, a non-profit group, on a feasibility study that "will help inform the Johnson administration’s emerging food retail strategy, which will receive input from experts, community leaders, and Chicago’s Food Equity Council."

"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides," Johnson said. "My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities. I am proud to work alongside partners to take this step in envisioning what a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago could look like." Complete article

Walmart Is Lowering Starting Pay. Will Other Employers Follow? 09/19/2023

With company pay strategies in the spotlight, the nation's largest private employer has made a significant move that indicates compensation aggression may be cooling.

Walmart, which has roughly 1.6 million U.S. employees, has lowered starting pay for new hires who prepare online orders for curbside pickup or delivery to customers' homes, as well as for workers who restock store shelves, according to reports. The change began in July, with new Walmart employees making about $1 an hour less than those who joined the company a few months earlier.

Walmart said in a statement that the move was made in part so that starting pay was consistent across positions, but the news still is a reversal from the days when the retail giant boosted pay for most of its workers in a competitive job market. Earlier this year, Walmart hiked its minimum wage for store workers to $14 from $12.

While this latest move is significant given Walmart's size and influence, the news isn't all that surprising given shifting economic tailwinds, experts said. Complete article

‘NOT WORKING’ Walmart self-checkout is slammed by shopper who argues it’s founding rule is failing – but still won’t use other options 09/26/2023

A SHOPPER has slammed Walmart self-checkout after arguing that its founding rule is failing.

Self-checkout kiosks are supposed to help shoppers pay more easily.

Armani (TikTok/@thewannabefilmaker) shared his recent experience shopping at a Walmart store.

"You can tell i had a bad Walmart trip," he captioned his video.

"Self-checkout was made to help you get in and out of the store faster," Armani said in the video.

When the cashier is taking too long, he said, self-checkout is the way to go.

But some people are bringing carts full of items to self-checkout and holding up others, Armani said.

He also shared his belief that many customers don't know how to use the scanners and kiosks. Complete article

Target closing 3 Portland stores, citing theft and organized retail crime 09/26/2023

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) - Three Target stores will be closing in Portland due to an increase in theft and organized retail crime, the retailer announced Tuesday.

Next month, Target will close their stores on SW Morrison, SE Powell and NE Halsey. The retailer is also closing six other stores in Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, and New York City.

“We take the decision to close stores very seriously, and only do so after taking meaningful steps to invest in the guest experience and improve business performance,” Target said in a release.

The retailer says they can’t continue to operate the stores efficiently due to theft and organized retail crime that is “threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance.” Complete article

Costco has an answer to the theft problems at Walmart and Target 09/28/2023

Theft remains a retail hot topic.

A number of major big-box retailers have said that shrink, the industry term for theft, has become an increasing problem. Both Target and Walmart have said that organized retail crime has pressured profit margins and hit their bottom lines.

They're not alone. Theft and organized retail crime have been brought up by countless retailers including Home Depot, Walgreens, and Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) - Get Free Report.

Many major retailers have reported increased losses due to theft and they blame everything from law enforcement, the laws themselves, and nefarious groups who blatantly steal because they know they'll face few, if any, consequences.

Lowe's (LOW) - Get Free Report Chief Executive Marvin Ellison places some of the blame on his rivals and their business practices.

"Having spent my entire adult life in retail, at every level, the one thing that I understand clearly is that the greatest deterrent for any theft activity is effective customer service and making sure that you have the right type of merchandising display," he said in a recent speech. ......

"First, we are asked often about our inventory shrinkage results and whether it has dramatically increased in the past year versus historical shrink results. The answer is no," he said. "In the past several years, our inventory shrink has increased by a couple of basis points, in part, we believe, due to the rollout of self-checkout."

Self-checkout comes with increased theft. That's been well documented.

"Theft accounts for nearly 4% of inventory for retailers with self-checkout, compared to just 1.5% for traditional checkout," according to a report from the U.K.'s University of Leicester.

Costco still uses self-checkout only at limited locations, according to its website. That may explain why its shrink numbers are better than those of its rivals. Complete article

CHECKS OUT Fans threaten to stop shopping at Walmart after being ‘forced’ into self-checkout lines and says ‘Kroger would never’ 09/27/2023

WALMART'S increasing reliance on self-checkout lines at the expense of cashiers has not been sitting well with all shoppers.

One of these shoppers recently took to X, formerly Twitter, to air their grievances.

"Yea I think I’m done shopping at @Walmart for groceries. I got a basket full of stuff only to get to the front and there are no cashiers. So I was forced to self checkout," Ramon (@4everRAMON) griped.

And this was only one half of his problem.

"THEN I get to the door and you question my integrity by asking to see my receipt," he continued.

The critic concluded by shouting out a more pleasant shopping experience. Complete article

Walmart moves two Albuquerque NM stores back to cashiers, one other store in the works 09/27/2023

You may have walked into one of two Albuquerque Walmart stores and noticed they look a bit different.

That’s because the company earlier this month redesigned the front end of the stores at 400 Eubank NE and 2701 Carlisle NE back to cashier lanes, a move away from the company’s shift in recent years to self-checkout lanes.

Josh Havens, a Walmart spokesman, told the Journal at least one other Albuquerque store — at 2266 Wyoming NE — will revert to staffed cashier lanes next month. The company did not provide a reason for the changes at the Albuquerque stores, only saying, “While there is no single reason for the decisions, we are always looking at ways to provide customers with the best shopping experience possible,” Havens said. Fired WV Walmart employee settles with company in discrimination suit 09/28/2023

COLUMBUS – A Ravenswood, West Virginia man who sued Walmart after he lost his job at the Logan store has apparently settled with the company out of court.

Plaintiff Jason Tingler claimed that he was fired because of a disability that had resulted from a workplace injury. Initially he filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. In January of this year the EEOC issued Tingler a “right to sue” notice, after which he filed a complaint in Hocking County Common Pleas Court.

Walmart successfully requested that the lawsuit be moved to federal court because it involved a federal law, the Americans With Disabilities Act; because the plaintiff and the defendant were citizens of different state; and because the potential damages in the suit exceeded $75,000.

Tingler’s lawsuit said he began working for Walmart in October 2021 as an overnight stocker, and in March 2022 suffered a back injury while lifting a box containing a foam mattress. He claimed that because of his injury, Walmart perceived him as disabled, and that he qualified as such under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In April 2022 Tingler once had to leave work with permission to go to the emergency room, and he applied for Workers’ Compensation. Not long afterwards the Logan Walmart allegedly took him off the store’s work schedule without giving a reason for doing so; Tingler claimed it was retaliation for his having filed for Workers’ Comp and asked for intermittent leave. ‘Check the cameras! some tells me she just grabbed it’: Walmart bakery worker says customer bought display cake that was made of styrofoam 09/27/2023

'Did she… not notice how light it was when she picked it up…?'

The first rule of bakeries is to never get something from the display case as you have no idea how long the items have been hanging around there. But it seems one customer at Walmart’s bakery didn’t get the memo as they appeared to not only buy a display cake, but were then shocked to find that it was made of styrofoam.

Walmart employee Charlie (@cardcaptor_s) took to TikTok to recount the incident in a video that has been viewed over 587,000 times.

In the video, Charlie showed her viewers a cake that was clearly made of styrofoam and explained, “This is a display cake and it was sold to a customer who thought they were taking a real cake. A real cake to their birthday party. Look, they lit the candles and everything.” Complete article

Houghton Mich. City Council approves Walmart settlement agreement 09/28/2023

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - On Wednesday, the Houghton City Council approved a service agreement with the Houghton Walmart store during its regular meeting. Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said the lawsuit with Walmart was something the city had been battling since 2018.

“We agreed to stipulate with them in the Tax Tribunal court down state and work through a settlement in what I guess you can call a recalibration in that development agreement which has now been converted into a service agreement which will replace that development agreement,” Waara said.

The tax tribunal case began after the Houghton Walmart filed an appeal with the city 5 years ago. This appeal is known as the ‘dark store loophole’ where Walmart tries to get its store valued at a lower price to pay less in property taxes. While settling the Tax tribunal case, Waara also said Walmart agreed to recognize all the services that property tax would normally pay for.

“Those services being environmental services because there is a lot of permitting that was involved in the construction of the store originally,” Waara said. “Plus bus services and there are all kinds of things there so Walmart is paying under the service agreement for the continents of those services.” Complete article

Fla. Walmart claims Villager drank and used drugs hours before alleged slip-and-fall 09/29/2023

In response to a lawsuit filed by a Villager who claims she fell on a painted surface at the Walmart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza, attorneys for the company say the woman was “able to walk” away on her own volition, had been “drinking” and “taking drugs” within hours of the incident, and has a “prior conviction involving a crime of dishonesty.”

On Friday, Sept. 22, Wal-Mart Stores East, LP, which does business as the Villages Wal-Mart Supercenter Store #4262, filed a motion to have its admissions “deemed admitted” in a lawsuit filed by Dianne Zugnoni in the fifth judicial circuit court for Sumter County.

The request comes in response to a complaint that was filed in March by Orlando-based Morgan & Morgan on behalf of Zugnoni, who is a resident of the Village of Summerhill.

According to that complaint, Zugnoni was visiting the Walmart at Buffalo Ridge, which is located at 4085 Wedgewood Lane, on July 6, 2021. During her visit, Zugnoni claims she “slipped and fell due to the existence of a dangerous and hazardous condition of the premises.” The complaint goes on to describe the condition as a “painted area of the parking lot walking surface that was unreasonably slippery, especially when wet.” Complete article
