Walmart Crime Report July 2023

Walmart had at least nine more shootings in July of 2023 with two of them fatal, and at least seven more injuries. One of these shootings wasn't reported in the media until six weeks after it happened, and then the headline didn't mention the shooting, only an attack. This article was updated to include the ninth shooting The media is clearly not reporting Walmart crime as promptly as they used to. There was one more fatal shooting at an intersection near Walmart, and some of the people went to safety in the Walmart Parking lot passing a few small stores on the way, but this wasn't related to Walmart business. This is the first time since September that there were fewer than ten shootings at Walmart; with nine consecutive months with ten or more, which is a record; prior to this there were at most six or seven consecutive months with ten or more shootings, but the trend is mostly going up. They broke an annual record last year, and although that record will be tough to break it may be a matter of time before they do if they continue ignoring the causes of their high rates of crime and violence. There was also an elderly woman hit with a pellet gun, and a lawsuit filed for a fatal shooting the month before. In addition to these shootings there were close to a dozen, if not more, additional gun crimes, mostly armed robberies, with a couple armed carjackings, and at least one false alarm of a shooting.

In addition to the two people killed in shootings on Walmart property there was another person beat to death, a person killed in a hit and run and four bodies found in their parking lots, mostly if not entirely in vehicles that may have been there for a while, for a total of at least eight people dead, not counting the one at the intersection near Walmart, which wasn't related to their business. Another man convicted of kidnapping a girl and killing from Walmart over twenty years ago is scheduled to be executed in November, which is slower than usual for Texas.

There's a growing epidemic of credit card skimmers being put on Walmart registers, mostly at self-checkout areas, at Walmart around the country. Last month the state of New York was hit the worst with at least fourteen different stores finding these skimmers, and one more report after it reached this number, which means either it was fifteen with one more store in the same town as they found a previous one, or they went back and hit the same store twice. There were also at least two found at Maine stores and one at an Aurora Colorado store which was apparently there for three and a half months. Walmart rarely ever accepts responsibility for this and isn't even considering cutting back on self-checkouts, which makes this much easier, but some banks don't hold cardholders accountable for this. If the bank doesn't take responsibility for it and forgive the charges not made by the consumer they're liable, and it's almost impossible to hold Walmart accountable, since they fight most lawsuits tooth and nail and they have much more money than the consumers, who actually provide the money for Walmart's legal defenses for many reasons.

The number of false accusations or lawsuits over intimidation, false arrests or other activities involving false accusations of shoplifting continue to grow, and the increase of self-checkout is a major factor for many of these cases as well. One woman claimed she was locked in Walmart because she refused to show her receipt, which she's allowed to do, especially if she heads straight to the door from the register and they have no reason to suspect shoplifting. Several more employees have gone on Social Media to report on how they're spying on everyone to catch shoplifters, but there's no discussion of reversing policies, including self-checkout and other automation or corner cutting, that lead to increased theft and false accusations.

There are continuing reports about how migrant children, and adults, for that matter, are routinely abused by being forced to work under brutal conditions for low wages, or in some cases no wages at all. This is worse when it comes to "undocumented immigrants," which are often referred to as "illegal aliens," as if they're criminal. However, many of these immigrants are refugees from oppressive regimes often put in place below the border by the United States government in wars or coups which they rarely admit to. Then they portray their victims as criminals and blame them instead of the corporations profiting off oppressive work conditions, which, of course, includes Walmart.

There was also another cop caught shoplifting who was suspended with pay, which is unusual; when caught on camera police are often let go without pay, if not quickly fired; although when they're accused of excessive force or killing poor people they're much more likely to be kept on the force with pay during the investigation then returned to duty if they find it justifiable. Another unusual case of a police officer being investigated for assault at a Colorado Walmart, where most if not all of it was caught on camera. The deputy was off-duty when the assault took place, and there doesn't appear to be any evidence of a crime on the part of the victim. Like many other cases, this deputy had a history of accusations for excessive force while on-duty, which means he was previously able to get away with it. What makes this unusual is they were so quick to investigate him, although it's unclear if he's still being paid. The reason for this may be that it was caught on camera and hard to deny combined with an increased amount of attention to police brutality, partly because many other cases are also being caught on camera.

There was also a woman attempting to kidnap a child at one Walmart, a shoplifter who barricaded himself in a car before the police eventually broke a window and inserted a chemical similar to pepper spray to get him out, and an elderly woman that was assaulted by an employee.

There was another couple of customers that had their car stolen when they brought it in for an oil change, and they were so baffled by it they thought it must be a joke; but this isn't unprecedented. In this case the keys were stolen from the shop before they changed the oil, which implies it was probably by an employee, and used to steal the car. There have been several incidents like this before, including one classic case from the 1990s where an employee stole and wrecked a vehicle in Walmarts custody, and they refused to take responsibility for it, and even threatened him with a libel suit if he told anyone. This was picked up by a newspaper, and only after the story got national attention did they take responsibility for it and replace the vehicle. This story was also told in "In Sam We Trust," by Bob Ortega 1998. Walmart was never charged for attempting to intimidate the victim with an unjustifiable threat of libel, and this wasn't the only time they made absurd threats like that; but these outrageous threats backfired several times, so they don't make them as often anymore, presumably because it does them more harm than good even if they're not sued, not because they have ethical values, although individual workers often have more ethics than lawyers or executives.

In addition to the accident killing one person there were close to a dozen, if not more, other major accidents or other automobile crimes, including an older man that drove over a divide hitting six migrant workers resting in the shade and kept on going. Initially the police claimed it was intentional based on the video where it seemed to leave little doubt, but after the man turned himself in he claimed it was an accident and he panicked and kept going, and the police accepted this answer, for some reason. There was alos a man repeatedly ramming his girlfriends car in their parking lot, before trying to escape. Another person crashed into at least seven cars, several chases starting, ending or passing through Walmart parking lots, at least two stolen cars, a Walmart tractor trailer crash, one vehicle that caught fire, and another that had the windows blow out when a woman huffing fumes lit a cigarette.

Do things like this happen anywhere but Walmart?

Walmart also had at least five more fires that were all arson, including one that was a result of fireworks taken off the shelf and set off in the aisles, where it took three and a half weeks to catch some of the teens involved, another that was started with flares and three more arsons, in a total of four states, with two of them in Georgia. There were also several attacks or threats with knives or hatchets, including one where several people were stabbed, and two more that just involved threats.

A small group of Spanish activists threw paint on a $300 million mega-yacht and held a sign saying "You Consume Others Suffer," which is true; and two of them were promptly arrested. They also released a statement saying "The richest 1 per cent of the world population pollutes more than the poorest 50 per cent," which is also true, or very close to the truth. The damage they did was, of course minuscule compared to the massive amount of damage globally to the environment worldwide, which is unsustainable and is already destroying the lives of many poor people and will eventually do much more damage to many other people. Yet there's no attempt to arrest the wealthy people doing much more damage, or even stop the damage or reverse it. This is one of many examples showing the laws are created and enforced for the benefit of the rich and instead of preventing inevitable mass destruction the government is setting the stage so that it will be happen sooner rather than later. Rich people committing much more crime aren't held accountable while those trying to protect the planet are criminalized.

Walmart also had numerous assaults, sex crimes, threats to police, petty thefts or other scams, several dog deaths or attacks by another dog, and a convicted murder that was arrested on their property, although the murder took place elsewhere.

Walmart has settled at least four or five of their lawsuits, including a couple African American people who were detained after trying to return a TV which they had a receipt for, and they weren't committing a crime. One of these was a former police officer and the other was a pastor. The terms were confidential, which Walmart routinely asks for so other potential litigants won't know what to expect and they can get major a advantage by negotiating in secret, or in most cases, fighting the lawsuits to the end, hoping they'll be dropped or settle for a paltry amount. In this case it might be a high amount, although it's unlikely to be nearly as much as a celebrity could get if they have a case against Walmart.

Other settlements were for overcharging customers, deceptive trade practices, or their involvement in the Opioid crisis. Tracy Morgan has also been talking about his lawsuit with Walmart as a result of a 2014 Walmart truck accident, which killed one and severely injured several others, including Tracy Morgan. This also included a settlement for an undisclosed amount, which he is legally banned from telling the public the exact amount, but he's been dropping hints on several occasions indicating that it was a lot. Since the terms of the settlement are confidential it's hard to know if he might be coming close to violating the conditions, but even if he is, Walmart might not think it's in their interests to push it. The reason they settled so fast and for a large amount which hasn't been disclosed is obviously because they knew a celebrity would get an enormous amount of media attention, and had the money to hire a lawyer. This is something they would never do for a poor or middle class person who wasn't ell known. Without knowing the details of the settlement I have no way of know if he's coming close to violating it; but if they try to sue him for violating the confidentiality agreement it would inevitably bring the publicity they're trying to avoid, so it's far more likely that they might send him a cease and desist order, trying to keep it quiet. This is just speculation, of course, but if something like that happens we may never hear of it due to the nature of non-disclosure agreements, which are, by definition, contracts to participate in a conspiracy.

This is actually only a small fraction of the lawsuits they're involved in on any given month, since most of them go months if not years with few major rulings or media coverage. There are also routine recalls including one for strawberry fruit bars last month, which is fewer than usually being reported.

One Walmart delivery customer was angry that her order of forty-five items came with only one item in each bag, asking them to "make it make sense," and going viral on Social media.

Another one who apparently ordered ten bananas, presumably thinking they would get individual bananas got 10 "hands" or bunches, which may have come to forty to sixty, depending on how many bananas in each "hand."

How often do you see snakes coiling around surveillance cameras or elsewhere at Walmart? Last month wasn't the only time something like this happened, by far.

How often does "God" get arrested at Walmart? For some reason the police didn't believe someone who claimed to be God and the owner of Walmart and arrested him for creating a disturbance. In the past there were at least two other people caught shoplifting at Walmart who claimed to own the chain of stores, but the police didn't believe them either, but people claiming to be "God" are less common, although some have claimed they were getting orders from a "Hookah smoking rabbit," or being chased by "Zombies" in a Zombie Apocalypse, or many other strange stories, at Walmart.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in July 2023. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Santee Ca. Walmart closes after hatchet-wielding man makes threats in store 07/02/2023

A man armed with a hatchet began making threats inside a Santee Walmart on Sunday, causing the store to close for roughly seven hours.

Around 12:05 p.m., the man walked into the Walmart located at 170 Town Center Parkway and climbed on top of some shelving, making threats to shoppers, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO). Arming himself with dumbells, the man threatened to use them as weapons, prompting employees to call law enforcement.

When deputies arrived, they learned the man was armed with two knives and a hatchet. SDSO said he threatened to kill deputies and said he wanted them to shoot him.

As deputies worked to de-escalate the situation, they evacuated the store and closed it for several hours. The man, who was only identified as a 22-year-old, was taken into custody and transported for a mental health evaluation around 7:30 p.m., according to Lt. Michael Pepin. Complete article

Shocking Discovery: Snake Found Coiled Around Camera in Crowley Walmart, Louisiana Walmart 07/03/2023

Shoppers at a local Walmart were taken aback by a surprising and unexpected visitor over the weekend. According to a Facebook post by Even Shane, a snake was discovered and subsequently captured inside the Crowley Walmart store, causing a mixture of fear and fascination among customers.

Eyewitnesses were startled when they noticed the slithering serpent wrapped around what appeared to be a surveillance camera near Aisle G3, an area typically stocked with diabetic care products. In an unusual turn of events, it seemed that the aisle had unintentionally become a temporary reptile habitat.

Videos shared on social media captured the moment of the snake's discovery, with audible gasps and whispers filling the air as customers observed the unexpected spectacle. In one video, an associate was seen attempting to coax the snake down from its perch using what appeared to be a cane. Despite the associate's efforts, the reptile seemed determined to hold its ground. Complete article

Can You Legally Record a Video Inside of a Walmart Store? 07/01/2023

Ever since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, my wife and have been trying to find ways to save money. As such we have been buying some of our food items at the Walmart in Pittsfield. I love the fact that Walmart joined in on the pickup service. At times if I'm in northern Berkshire County and I only need to pick up a couple of items, I'll make a stop at the North Adams Walmart.

One thing that I remember seeing in the Westfield Walmart a while back was some youngsters filming each other which didn't seem like a big deal to me. Heck, I have even snapped photos/videos on my phone inside the store so I could remember the brand of items I was looking at for future reference.

Recently, when I was doing a Google search on Walmart I found that recording a video in Walmart is a thumbs down. If you go to the website Ask Walmart, you can ask a question in the search field and you'll get an answer. Just for fun, I asked if I could record a video in a Walmart store and the answer I received from the site was the following:
Out of respect for our associates and customers, unauthorized filming is prohibited and we reserve the right to enforce that policy.

As you can see from the answer, filming in a Walmart store is prohibited but I can't imagine snapping a pic or video of an item is a big deal. Though the act of filming inside of a store isn't against the law, you are asked to respect and follow Walmart's policy Have you ever recorded a video on your phone inside a Walmart store? Did you face any consequences? Complete article

FTC: Walmart 'Turned Blind Eye' to Telemarketing Rule Violations 07/02/2023

Federal regulators have offered new details in a legal action involving Walmart’s money-transfer operations.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced Friday (June 30) that it had amended its year-old complaint against the retail giant, which involves the company’s alleged violation of federal telemarketing sales rules.

“According to the amended complaint, Walmart for years turned a blind eye while scammers took advantage of its failure to properly secure the money transfer services offered at Walmart stores,” the commission said in a news release.

The commission maintains that Walmart failed to properly train employees or warn customers, and used procedures that led scammers to cash out at its stores.

PYMNTS has contacted Walmart for comment but has not received a reply. Last year, the company asked a judge to dismiss the FTC’s case, calling it “an egregious instance of agency overreach.”

The company contends that the FTC is trying to hold it accountable “for the criminal actions of completely unrelated third-party fraudsters” and despite the retailer’s “extensive efforts to prevent those very fraudsters from defrauding our customers.”

The FTC said Friday that its complaint that Walmart had allowed those criminal actions to happen by permitting the payout of “transfers with characteristics of fraud” and by having either no anti-fraud policy or one that was ineffective and poorly enforced. Complete article

Woman helps girl escape locked hot car while her mom shopped at Tx. Walmart, records allege 07/05/2023

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston mother went before a judge Wednesday after being charged for allegedly leaving her 9-year-old daughter inside a locked hot car for an hour while she shopped.

Diana Linda Obiyo, 35, allegedly left her daughter inside the car for an hour "in temperatures exceeding 95 degrees without adult supervision" on Monday while she shopped at the Walmart on South Post Oak, according to court documents.

Walmart Must Face Claim It Lies About Product Weight at Checkout 07/07/2023

Court dismisses some causes of action in ‘shotgun pleading’

Underlying allegations of deception survive motion to dismiss

Walmart Inc. failed to avoid some claims that it overcharges its customers by inflating the weight of its bagged produce and sold-by-weight products at checkout, a Florida federal court ruled.

The retail giant moved to dismiss Vassilios Kukorinis’ proposed class action, alleging it already settled with him over the same causes of action three years ago in a neighboring jurisdiction.

But the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida allowed some of the claims to proceed on Thursday, disagreeing that Kukorinis’ allegations under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act possess the same factual predicate as his ... Complete article

Dead Weeks, ‘Resenteeism’ And How Walmart’s HR Chief Is Putting AI To Work 07/07/2023

Years ago, when I worked for a weekly business news magazine, we had two “dead weeks” each year when we didn’t publish an issue: A week in August after we printed a summer double issue and most of the staff got out of New York, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s, when everyone took off for the holidays. They weren’t vacation days, strictly speaking, but it was quiet. You had time to think. Step away for longer lunches. Come in late and work on a project you’d been trying to find time to start.

As the pandemic launched a newfound focus on mental health in the workplace, it felt like something like that was coming back. A number of companies added mental health days or summer Fridays. Company-wide “shutdowns” became a thing, as employers recognized that time off was respected more when everyone else was doing it too. “Self-care weeks” were launched to give people extra time off.

Despite the downturn, some companies are continuing the practice. HubSpot has a “global week of rest” this week. PwC is calling this week a “firmwide shutdown.” Many of us actually working this week—with July 4th falling halfway through—can feel the difference. There are fewer emails in the inbox. The calendar is less full. Slack is quieter. Complete article

‘He had no right to treat us this way’: Shopper says Walmart worker ‘locked’ them inside store when they wouldn’t show their receipt, dividing viewers 07/07/2023

'As a Walmart associate it’s literally in training that we cannot make customers show a receipt if they don’t want to!'

There’s a part of the checkout process that Walmart customers know well—showing your receipt to an employee as you exit.

This is not a policy without controversy. Over the years, numerous users have pointed out that Walmart staff are not supposed to force you to show your receipt, and that internal Walmart policy advises against pushing too heavily for a receipt check.

Additionally, several users’ clips have gone viral after sharing their stories of being forced to show receipts. In one case, a user accused a Walmart employee of illegally detaining him after he did not show a receipt; in another, a customer claimed that an employee followed him to his car to check his receipt. Alone and Exploited, Migrant Children Work Brutal Jobs Across the U.S. 02/25/2023

Arriving in record numbers, they’re ending up in dangerous jobs that violate child labor laws — including in factories that make products for well-known brands like Cheetos and Fruit of the Loom. It was almost midnight in Grand Rapids, Mich., but inside the factory everything was bright. A conveyor belt carried bags of Cheerios past a cluster of young workers. One was 15-year-old Carolina Yoc, who came to the United States on her own last year to live with a relative she had never met.

About every 10 seconds, she stuffed a sealed plastic bag of cereal into a passing yellow carton. It could be dangerous work, with fast-moving pulleys and gears that had torn off fingers and ripped open a woman’s scalp.

The factory was full of underage workers like Carolina, who had crossed the Southern border by themselves and were now spending late hours bent over hazardous machinery, in violation of child labor laws. At nearby plants, other children were tending giant ovens to make Chewy and Nature Valley granola bars and packing bags of Lucky Charms and Cheetos — all of them working for the processing giant Hearthside Food Solutions, which would ship these products around the country.

“Sometimes I get tired and feel sick,” Carolina said after a shift in November. Her stomach often hurt, and she was unsure if that was because of the lack of sleep, the stress from the incessant roar of the machines, or the worries she had for herself and her family in Guatemala. “But I’m getting used to it.” .....

Migrant child labor benefits both under-the-table operations and global corporations, The Times found. In Los Angeles, children stitch “Made in America” tags into J. Crew shirts. They bake dinner rolls sold at Walmart and Target, process milk used in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and help debone chicken sold at Whole Foods. As recently as the fall, middle-schoolers made Fruit of the Loom socks in Alabama. In Michigan, children make auto parts used by Ford and General Motors. .....

Nery Cutzal was 13 when he met his sponsor over Facebook Messenger. Once Nery arrived in Florida, he discovered that he owed more than $4,000 and had to find his own place to live. His sponsor sent him threatening text messages and kept a running list of new debts: $140 for filling out H.H.S. paperwork; $240 for clothes from Walmart; $45 for a taco dinner.

“Don’t mess with me,” the sponsor wrote. “You don’t mean anything to me.” ....

In interviews with underage migrant workers, The Times found child labor in the American supply chains of many major brands and retailers. Several, including Ford, General Motors, J. Crew and Walmart, as well as their suppliers, said they took the allegations seriously and would investigate. Target and Whole Foods did not respond to requests for comment. Fruit of the Loom said it had ended its contract with the supplier.

One company, Ben & Jerry’s, said it worked with labor groups to ensure a minimum set of working conditions at its dairy suppliers. Cheryl Pinto, the company’s head of values-led sourcing, said that if migrant children needed to work full time, it was preferable for them to have jobs at a well-monitored workplace. As Migrant Children Were Put to Work, U.S. Ignored Warnings 04/17/2023

In the spring of 2021, Linda Brandmiller was working at an arena in San Antonio that had been converted into an emergency shelter for migrant children. Thousands of boys were sleeping on cots as the Biden administration grappled with a record number of minors crossing into the United States without their parents.

Ms. Brandmiller’s job was to help vet sponsors, and she had been trained to look for possible trafficking. In her first week, two cases jumped out: One man told her he was sponsoring three boys to employ them at his construction company. Another, who lived in Florida, was trying to sponsor two children who would have to work off the cost of bringing them north.

She immediately contacted supervisors working with the Department of Health and Human Services, the federal agency responsible for these children. “This is urgent,” she wrote in an email reviewed by The New York Times.

But within days, she noticed that one of the children was set to be released to the man in Florida. She wrote another email, this time asking for a supervisor’s “immediate attention” and adding that the government had already sent a 14-year-old boy to the same sponsor.

Ms. Brandmiller also emailed the shelter’s manager. A few days later, her building access was revoked during her lunch break. She said she was never told why she had been fired. Complete article

Witnesses described quite a commotion Sunday afternoon at the Walmart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages after 56-year-old James Lawrence Sicard of Astoria, N.Y. directed law enforcement to his mother, who was lying on a piece of foam in the back of silver Honda Odyssey minivan, with New Mexico license plates, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Sicard “was acting erratic and not making much sense.”

Sicard, who works in props in the entertainment industry and whose television credits include “The Equalizer,” “The Gilded Age” and “The Good Fight,” had summoned law enforcement to the Walmart and indicated he would meet them near the garden section. Price check! Walmart pays $2 million to settle Nevada deceptive trade practices complaint 07/13/2023

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The delay in updating the price on the shelf to reflect the price in the system has cost Walmart $2 million as part of a settlement with Nevada, according to Attorney General Aaron D. Ford’s office.

The settlement was reached after customers complained they were charged a different price at the register than the price listed on the shelf. That’s a violation of the Nevada Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

Walmart is moving toward electronic pricing in its stores, which will eliminate the lag created by separate systems: one that accepted price changes, and one that printed price labels for shelves.

Walmart also reached a similar settlement with Colorado over the same allegations. Complete article

‘I don’t even go in the makeup section anymore’: Walmart customer says they can’t leave certain areas without paying first 07/14/2023

A user on TikTok has gone viral after showing what they allege to be Walmart’s security system.

In a clip with over 2 million views as of Friday, Ottawa, Canada-based TikTok user Parker (@parkerbazinet) shows a series of cameras placed throughout a Walmart location.

“When Walmart puts 20 long camera sticks in every [aisle] and don’t let you leave certain areas without paying,” Parker writes in the text overlaying the video.

Walmart has been criticized online numerous times for its security procedures. Users have questioned the store’s decision to secure low-price items or lock up certain products behind glass, as well as their security camera systems that some claim are invasive.

(Reuters) - A federal judge in Syracuse, New York, on Wednesday ordered a lawyer known for filing hundreds of food and beverage labeling lawsuits to explain why he should not be sanctioned for bringing a "frivolous" proposed class action against Starbucks.

Spencer Sheehan, a Great Neck, New York-based lawyer, has been threatened with sanctions twice by other federal judges in the state and warned multiple times against bringing unserious lawsuits, U.S. District Judge Frederick Scullin said.

Sheehan knows the class action lawsuits he files "plainly do not meet the pleading requirements for such claims," Scullin said.

Scullin dismissed Sheehan's case against Starbucks, which claimed the coffee giant's French roast ground 100% Arabica coffee was not actually 100% ground coffee because it contained added potassium. Complete article

‘I resubmit it’: Walmart worker has time-off request denied by manager. So they find another manager 07/18/2023

‘Cuz I wasn’t asking you, I’m telling you in advance!’

There’s a common saying amongst contemporary workers about requests for time off. Rather than a request, many modern workers see putting in notice that one will be leaving as a warning. To them, PTO stands not for “paid time off” but “prepare the others.”

Numerous users have gone viral complaining about the time off policies at various businesses. One worker claimed they were called into HR for requesting time off for their sister’s wedding. Another simply stated that their boss forbade them from taking their vacation time.

Others have shared ways to get around having to use PTO. In one case, a worker joked about using bereavement time after PTO was denied because “somebody die everyday.” When faced with a denial of time off, a further worker simply quit.

Now, another user on TikTok has gone viral and sparked discussion after sharing their method for getting the time off that they requested.

In a clip with over 435,000 views, TikTok user Thalia (@thaliasanmiguel) writes, “When one of my managers reject my time off so I resubmit it and a different manager approves it.” Complete article

Walmart pulls Milwaukee Tool gloves allegedly made by Chinese prisoners 07/17/2023

Meanwhile, a congressional committee is investigating the Brookfield-based tool company’s supply chain following a Wisconsin Watch investigation.

Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, is no longer selling Milwaukee Tool-branded gloves on its online marketplace — responding to allegations that a subcontractor for the Brookfield, Wisconsin-based tool company relied on forced Chinese prison labor to manufacture certain models of gloves.

“We looked into the allegations regarding the gloves in question, and we made a decision to de-list those from the marketplace,” Kathleen McLaughlin, Walmart’s chief sustainability officer, told shareholders during a virtual meeting on May 31, according to a transcript reviewed by Wisconsin Watch.

In a follow up letter to a shareholder, a Walmart official confirmed that the company removed the gloves from its third-party platform, blocked future sales and does not sell the branded gloves in its stores or on its website. Complete article

Settlement announced with Colorado Walmart for overcharging customers 07/18/2023

Attorney General Phil Weiser announced today a settlement reached with Walmart over the company’s failure to ensure the price customers paid for its products matched the price listed on the shelf. This settlement is part of a partnership between Weiser and Attorney General Aaron Ford of Nevada.

Under the terms of the settlement, the company will pay $3 million to Colorado, which will be used to help fund local food pantries and other programs that Coloradans who earn low incomes lean on to afford food and other necessities.

“All retailers have a duty to ensure the price their customers pay at the register is the same one they see on shelves,” said Weiser. “Today’s settlement provides consumers with reassurance that they’re paying the price they expect when they shop at Walmart and other stores. It’s also important that the money from the settlement will benefit Coloradans who are struggling economically — the same Coloradans who were most affected by Walmart’s inaccurate pricing.” Complete article

‘They definitely thought they were getting 10 bananas total’: Walmart app shopper issues banana fail PSA 07/22/2023

Online grocery shopping can be a mixed bag, and not just for customers who like to add a little variety to their diet: There are a number of folks who’ve been left with items they never intended on purchasing because their personal shopper either took it upon themselves to make head-scratching product substitutions, or just simply didn’t care enough/take the time to properly fulfill the order.

But a TikTok posted by user Carolina Trevizo (@thecarolinatrevizo) seems to suggest that a misinterpretation of quantity nomenclature, at least on Walmart’s online shopping app, could be the root cause behind some of the bizarre orders customers receive.

In a viral clip that’s accrued over 72,000 views on the popular social media platform, Trevizo highlights one such confusing order for a customer who either really likes bananas, or had no idea that they were about to get potassium-bombed.

Trevizo begins the video showing off the Walmart personal shopper item fulfillment order on her store-issued device. The order indicates that the customer requested a quantity of “10” bananas, and probably only thought that they were going to get 10 single bananas.

However, what they ordered were 10 individual hands, leaving the customer with anywhere from 40-60 bananas depending on how many pieces of the fruit were on each of the hands. Complete article

The unidentified man was contacted by police around 10:17 a.m. on Saturday. Police soon learned that he had a felony warrant for his arrest.

Unable to coax the man from his vehicle, police used oleoresin capsicum powder “to encourage the suspect to surrender,” a news release from the Longmont Police Department stated.

Oleoresin capsicum is used to make pepper spray and can cause burning, itching, dryness, pain, redness and swelling at the application site.

Around 11:35 a.m., police broke a side window in the man’s car. Afterward, the suspect exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without further incident, according to LPD. Complete article

‘I thought it was a joke’: Couple’s car stolen from Fremont Ca. Walmart Auto Care Center 07/31/2023

FREMONT, Calif. - A Fremont couple's car was taken from a Walmart Auto Care Center last week.

The theft happened at the Walmart on Osgood Road around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to Fremont police. The couple had taken their car in for a routine oil change when things went terribly wrong. "On the first phone call they asked me if I drove the car off the lot," Josh Hsieh said. "I didn’t think anything of it at the time."

When Hsieh received a second phone call, he started questioning the situation.

"The manager said the car was gone," Hsieh said. "I asked the man if he was joking because he was rambling over the phone. I thought I was on a show or something."

It was revealed that someone stole a pair of keys from the Auto Care Center and drove off with the white Kia Forte. How it happened is still puzzling to the car’s owners.

"Something as simple as an oil change, you would think would get done," said Hsieh’s girlfriend, Linda Ton. "The keys are in their possession. It’s something so simple and so easy. I wouldn’t think that our car would be stolen." Complete article
