On Black Friday neither the local ABC or CBS affiliates reported the regular nightly news, since they were both reporting on sporting events like many weekends. NBC was the only one reporting the regular news and they didn't report much if anything about local crime at Malls or Walmart during Black Friday; however they did report on a panic about a possible gunman in England that led to a panic. It turned out to be a false alarm, and it wasn't related to shopping here in the USA. What reported they did provide like a lot of other news, local or national, did include an enormous amount of advertisements thinly disguised as news including discussion about how stores are trying to lure people in and how excited people are about shopping.
If they wanted to report on the news, including crime problems during Black Friday there was plenty to report even though, thanks partly due to internet sales and partly due to early promotions or other reasons there aren't as many Black Friday riots as there was a few years ago, that I can tell. However there is just as much if not more crime and violence during the holiday season, it's just spread out more. They had at least one real shooting and a major fire apparently an arson in a Texas Walmart during either Thanksgiving day or Black Friday.
There was plenty more for them to report, as there always is, including some stories that are as dramatic as the ones they often turn into the Obsession du Jour in their national newscasts. On the first of the month, when they were reporting on the terrorist attack in NYC there was a gunman that walked into a Colorado Walmart and nonchalantly killed three Hispanic people for no apparent reason that anyone has yet to figure out. This story, of course must have been widely reported locally and went viral on the internet; however it received surprisingly brief coverage from the national press with only brief reports in the nightly news or Cable news, at most. There was plenty of reporting in the internet that this wasn't reported so widely as part of a trend that reports on Muslim shootings much more extensively than they do when a white person kills minorities, which I'm sure is a reasonable assumption; but it is also true that they're much less likely to report widely about the large number of shootings that take place at Walmart, even the highest profile ones only get reported briefly.
On top of that when they do report on Walmart's high crime problem, like August of 2016 when there was a surge of newspaper articles on it led by a Bloomberg expose, it is ignored by national television and Cable news. Since then there has almost always been at least one or two local articles about high crime problems in the local area, including some that report that this is despite the fact that Walmart was lured into the area with tax breaks so they're not paying their fair share of taxes even though they cost the taxpayer more money with their crime problems. There was another of those stories this month about Missouri & Kansas Police responding much more to Walmart than other locations.
They also broke the record for total number of shootings for the year even though there's another full month to go; they had at least 104 shootings in 2016; and at least 14 this month bringing the total up to at least 114 for the year. Two of those shootings both took place in Colorado Springs, which isn't too far from the triple homicide which was also in Colorado. These two shootings were only a few days apart and there was a third incident in between where there was a panic about a possible shooting although there were no shots fired on that incident. Two of the shootings both took place in South Carolina one day apart, and two more both took place in North Carolina three days apart. Some of these shootings are happening in clusters for one reason or another and the people in the local areas must be well aware of it although they might not know about the shootings taking place in other parts of the country at Walmarts.
There were also a total of six deaths from three of these shootings and at least six serious injuries. Several of these shootings involved multiple shooters, although only one of them was an officer involved shootings this month, and that was one of the fatal ones. Often most if not all the fatal shootings are from police officers at Walmart. There were at least nine more gun related incidents including one more that involved shots fired, at a security guard, although it was only from an air gun, another one also involved a car crash. One of these armed robberies was only over a pack of cigarettes.
In addition to the six people killed by gunfire there were two more bodies found from people that probably died of natural causes, including one employee that had a heart attack, another person that broke down in a Walmart parking lot before dying in a pond trying to get away from police chasing him, and another person that was stabbed to death in a road rage incident where the perpetrator, apparently filmed his own crime. This means the death toll at Walmart is at least ten for the month. (edit 12/02/2017: The death count was adjusted after the suspect wounded on the thirtieth by a police officer died at the hospital.) They also caught a spree killer that killed four people at Walmart although they weren't even killed in the same state where he was caught.
There were also more crashes and stabbings or knife crimes including one where a Walmart worker slit the throat of another worker who didn't suffer long term damage, and another where a shoplifter stole his own hatchet to be used in case it turned into an armed robbery or attempted robbery which is how it ended. It's semi-routine for armed robbers to show up unarmed and steal the weapons they use to commit robbery. There was a larger than usual surge in the number of bomb threats with at least sixteen reported in the news; however since there are so common, and they rarely ever have actual bombs there were almost certainly more that didn't make the news.
There were a total of at least five major fires at Walmart, including at least three that were arson, one where they tried to use it as a distraction so they could steal a full cart, which is semi-routine although they always get caught when they try this another by a former firefighter, and the third was a double arson where they set two fires in the same location shutting down the store for a few days surrounding thanksgiving. There seems to be something about this incident that they're not telling the public since they initially told the public that the alleged suspect was cooperating but they couldn't figure out what to charge him with, if anything. When it's on camera like everything else at Walmart you would think it would be easy to figure out.
There are always a few sex crimes at Walmart, including one where a women being escorted by her abuser wrote on her hand a message asking people to call the cops on him and a family that was followed and harassed in the parking lot, slashed tires, assaults on police officers and more.
Walmart has been sued for overcharging customers and they're still charging people in Indiana for the Cook County Illinois sales tax. They lost a suit for a man falling while buying a watermelon, and there was a guilty plea for a scam that was using Walmart gift cards to lure people in for unnecessary tests. A cop is suing them for false accusations after he was acquitted of shoplifting, and a security guard was fired for subduing a suspect, which is common, although they don't seem to teach there security guards not to do this. They were also accused of denying family leave for a mother with a sick child.
Another of their iPad boxes was filled with flour, similar incidents have been reported repeatedly. They were caught with rats during an inspection again; it's much harder to prevent this when groceries are in a large department store than if they're separate from non-food items. Numerous customers have responded to an expose about Walmart problems with auto repair; once one story was reported saying that they ruined an engine by sending it out without oil several similar stories were called in to the reporters. They also had there ranking with Human rights workers revoked again; they rarely ever take that into consideration when it isn't being reported and this ahs only been reported at low profile articles.
Walmart has sued another city for excessive property taxes even though they cause much more crime; and they're increasing their oligarchy power by buying more stores including Lord and Taylor; there is no justifiable claim that we have a free market. They're using this oligarchy power to intimidate suppliers with fines for late deliveries. Numerous executives sold large amounts of stock as they hit recent highs. This follows sales by Alice Walton and her brother of large volumes as well. However Houston residents have learned there lesson and decided to support minority owned businesses after the flood and I wouldn't be surprised if these stock holders suspect something bad is coming.
Walmart was shamed into retracting sales of shirts that said "Tree, rope, Journalist, some assembly required," clearly implying they should be lynched, or that it would be funny, for a surprisingly high price on their web site.
If you can't remember where your car is in the parking lot it might not be such a good idea to call 911, tell them you were robbed hoping the police will help you find it. when police do get involved in shootings they're almost never held accountable but when they get drunk and decide to leave with full carts of unpaid merchandise that's a different story for some reason.
If your stupid enough to pay $20 dollars for a Walmart vest to someone advertising them as a shoplifting tool; keep in mind that they treat their own workers like criminals and search them before leaving, as much if not more than customers without a vest.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in November 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Customers and employees hid or fled toward the exits after gunshots rang out in Thornton, which is a suburb of Denver. Avila says he doesn't know how many rounds were fired.
Authorities are reviewing security video to identify the suspect, who fled in a car before officers arrived.

THORNTON, Colo. -- Walmart is American as apple pie.
On Wednesday night, another American staple became the center of gun violence when police say a man walked into a Thornton store and randomly killed three people near a cash register.
Soft targets such as a Walmart have been under threat of random attacks for years. They have few exits and usually hundreds of people are inside.
"Walmarts have greeters but no armed guards," said Grant Whitus, a security expert who was on a SWAT team that responded the day of the Columbine shooting.
"Any location where you have people close together is considered a soft target."
"My belief is these places, these locations where you are going to have a lot of patrons should hire an armed guard to protect them."

NC Walmart fined for overcharging customers 11/0/2017
The Rockingham Walmart has been fined $1,350 for excessive price-scanner errors which caused customers to be overcharged for some items, according to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards Division.
State officials conducted a random inspection of the store in June and found it had a five percent error rate based on a sample of 100 sales. The store was given until August to reduce the error rate to two percent or less on a larger sampling of store items but failed again, only reducing the error rate to three percent with nine overcharges out of 300 items, which resulted in the fine.
Inspectors also take into account customers being undercharged, but those instances do not count against the store, according to the Ag Department. Complete article

Police Investigate Fatal Shooting In NW Oklahoma City Walmart Parking Lot 11/05/2017
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma - Police are investigating Oklahoma City’s latest homicide, after man was found with a gunshot wound in a Walmart parking lot during a busy day of Sunday shopping.
The victim crashed his truck into a car outside the store at Pennsylvania Avenue and Memorial Boulevard, but police still are not sure if that is where the shooting actually took place. Crime scene investigators had to process the entire south side of the Walmart parking lot to try to gather evidence about what happened. They are also reviewing the available surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to try to figure it out.
The call first came out as a vehicle crash, after a pickup truck slammed into a parked car on the south side of Walmart's parking lot. Officer Jeff Dutton says, “They actually found out that there was some sort of confrontation in the parking lot close to the south side. That confrontation led to one of the vehicles speeding off from that area.”
The truck that sped west to east through the south end of the parking lot was being driven by the victim. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital, but was pronounced dead from at least one gunshot wound. Complete article

Forks man jailed following theft from Sequim Wash. Walmart, pursuit 11/06/2017
SEQUIM — A Forks man who deputies say walked out of the Sequim Walmart with nearly $1,000 in merchandise, fled police and attempted to steal a vehicle was jailed over the weekend.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Don Kitchen said he stopped to investigate Saturday after he found a shopping cart in a bush near Walmart — full of unbagged items with security devices still attached.
Inside the cart was a radio control drone, dufflebag, air gun, flashlight, BB gun, tent, holster, tools and several other items, totalling $975.39.
When Kitchen stopped to look at the cart, Jason Brack, 20, stood up from the bushes and attempted to “nonchalantly” walk away, Kitchen said.
“I asked him to talk to me and he bolted,” he said. Complete article

Police told WCSH that a suspect entered the store around 8 p.m. with a firearm, and a confrontation ensued with another person inside — referred to by police as a “good Samaritan” — who was trying to disarm the man with the firearm. They said one shot was fired within the building.
While police were responding to the incident inside the store, a woman passed away in the parking lot, according to Augusta Police Deputy Chief Jared Mills.
The woman’s cause of death was not immediately known, but Mills said it wasn’t due to “a gunshot wound or anything that was apparent” and that police would be working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine exactly what happened. Complete article

Shoppers paid Cook County Ill. pop tax at Hammond Ind. Walmart 11/07/2017
Cook County's much-maligned tax on sweetened beverages proved so unpopular and politically toxic that it will be repealed Dec. 1.
The rollout of the tax of 1 cent per ounce on all sweetened beverages, including artificially sweetened diet pops with no calories, was so problematic that the tax got levied outside of Cook County — in another state in fact.
Lansing residents Denise Doorneweerd and Marina Gallegos went shopping Sunday at the Hammond Walmart just off the Borman Expressway, about three miles east of the state line and the Cook County border. They often shop in the Hoosier state because the taxes are lower and so many stores have closed in their hometown.
They bought some Hawaiian Punch that was on sale and were headed back to the car when Gallegos noticed the receipt included $1.28 for "Cook Cty SBT." Complete article

Threats prompt police to evacuate Lebanon Oregon Walmart 11/08/2017
Police evacuated the Lebanon Walmart late Wednesday evening after a suspect sent what officers termed "very serious threats" to several employees.
Lebanon Police Chief Frank Stevenson said a male suspect, apparently distraught over a recent break-up with a store employee, sent the threats through either voice or text message to employees. As a precaution, officers evacuated and secured the Walmart in response to fears that the man had entered the store with a gun.
Shopper Cassie Richey told the Democrat-Herald she was in the checkout line at about 9:20 p.m. when a voice over the intercom ordered everyone out of the store.
"Walking out with the employees, they said an employee's ex showed up with a gun," she wrote in a Facebook message.
However, it was not clear as of 12:30 Thursday if the suspect had actually entered the store, nor was it known how many employees were working at the time.
Richey said the Oregon State Police, Lebanon Police Department, Linn County Sheriff's Office and a police canine unit were on the scene. Representatives of those agencies were still searching the store at 12:30 a.m. A cellphone video showed officers searching vehicles in the parking lot. Armed officers guarded the store with Heckler & Koch G36 rifles. Complete article

Vancouver woman buys iPad from Wash. Walmart, gets bag of flour instead 11/10/2017
VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A Vancouver woman said she bought an iPad Mini 4, but found a bag of flour in the box instead of an iPad.
“I paid $400 for flour,” said Sharleen Nelson.
On Sunday, Nelson visited the Walmart store on North Hayden Meadows Drive in Portland. She said a salesman helped her select the iPad, which she paid $399 for.
“He used a key to open the cabinet, looked like there were two of them,” recalled Nelson. “He pulled one out and that's the one I bought.”
Nelson got home, opened the sealed package and saw the bag of flour.
“I thought this was a new packaging thing. I didn't know what it was,” said Nelson. “This thing turned out to be a bag of flour.”
At first Nelson was scared, then her fear developed into anger.
“I thought, what if it's that anthrax?” Nelson said. “I was so mad. I don’t have $400 to just blow!” Complete article

Teens fire airsoft gun at Nebraska Walmart security guard 11/10/2017
A Walmart security guard evidently thought that a question posed to him by two teenagers was strange — and he told them so.
The boys, in a gold Honda sedan, pulled up next to the guard’s marked security car on his break Wednesday evening at the Walmart near North 99th Street and Military Road, police said.
They asked the guard whether he carried any weapons.
“That question seems suspect,” the guard responded.
Immediately, the boys fired an airsoft gun at the guard, who initially thought it was a real firearm.
The boys sped away in the car and were not located by the guard or Omaha police officers, but the incident may have been captured on video. Complete article

Dozens of people were locked inside a Colorado Springs Walmart on Monday night after a man threatened people with what appeared to be a rifle, police said.

Walmart’s score suspended in Human Rights Campaign rankings 11/13/2017
The retail giant Walmart, which has long been the subject of criticism over its employment practices, has found a new critic in the Human Rights Campaign’s latest corporate scorecard.
The nation’s LGBT organization suspended Walmart’s score in the 2018 Corporate Equality Index, which was unveiled last week. The cited reason for the suspension was the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the U.S. agency charged with enforcing federal employment civil rights law, finding probable cause for anti-trans discrimination within Walmart in 2017.
“During the CEI survey cycle, two Equal Employment Opportunity Commission determinations were made public in the cases of Jessica Robison (EEOC Charge Number 511-2015-01402) and Charlene Bost (EEOC Charge Number 430- 2014-01900),” the report says. “These determinations pointed to significant enforcement gaps in Wal-Mart’s non-discrimination policy, specifically with regards to sex and gender identity. Pending remedial steps by the company, the CEI rating is suspended.”
Deena Fidas, director of the Human Rights Campaign’s Workplace Equality Program, said the suspension will be lifted when Walmart addresses EEOC’s findings of anti-trans discrimination. Complete article

Labor advocates urge Walmart to raise wages for holiday shifts 11/20/2017
MARTINEZ — Workers and labor activists are calling on Walmart to give employees a higher wage for shifts that fall on holidays, something companies across a slew of industries already practice.
As part of Making Change at Walmart, a campaign from the United Food and Commercial Workers international labor union, union members and activists demonstrated outside a Walmart store on Arnold Drive in Martinez on Monday, kicking off the first of what organizers said would be several coordinated protests at Walmart stores across the country.
Making Change at Walmart organizer Jenny Divish, along with former Walmart employee Gabriel Portugal and UFCW Local 5 representative Bambi Marien, handed a petition to a manager at the Walmart store that urged Walmart to give an increased hourly wage to workers on holiday shifts.
“We believe the holidays are a special time of year. However, Walmart’s policy eliminating holiday pay in 2016 sends a strong message that there is nothing special about the holidays when it comes to how Walmart treats and pays its workers,” the petition said. “If Walmart is going to remain open on major holidays like Thanksgiving and New Year’s, then it should bring back holiday pay so workers are fairly compensated for all that they give up to make the holidays happen.” Complete article

Missouri & Kansas Police often respond to one store more than any other – Walmart 11/20/2017
ST. LOUIS, MO — A Fox Files investigation found Walmart demands much more attention from police departments, and often doesn't pay extra for that additional help. We began our investigation after hearing the town of Raytown, Kansas tried declaring their Walmart a public nuisance. Raytown hoped that would get their town more police power since the Walmart there demanded so much help from police.
Here in the St. Louis area, it’s easy to find news in the crime archives.
“I heard three shots boom boom boom,” one woman said after a deadly shooting and police pursuit at the Cahokia, IL Walmart in 2016. “I'm trying to make sure I don't get shot,” someone else said.
Last month, the O’Fallon, MO Walmart locked down during a SWAT standoff with a gun toting felon. ......
The Maplewood Walmart has more than five times the police calls as any other Maplewood business -- 1472 call in a year. Sam’s Club was 2nd with 271 calls. Lowe’s had 245. ......
In Shrewsbury, where Walmart gets a tax break, they also need more police help than anybody else. Former Alderwoman Dee Wiecher fought that break in 2013. She said, “I don't understand why you'd want to give people money that already have money. It doesn't make sense.” Complete article

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- A 31-year-old Colorado man says Walmart fired him for doing his job.
Ramon asked his last name and hometown not be used, not because he fears retaliation from Walmart, but because he's worried about the countless shoplifters he helped the Commerce City Police Department arrest as an asset protection associate for the nation's largest retailer.
Ramon was fired Nov. 10 after subduing a store burglary suspect four days earlier.
"All I was trying to do was do my job, the best I could," Ramon said.
Surveillance video shows Ramon getting sucker punched in the eye by the 21-year-old suspect, Juan Izalbe.
The video then shows Ramon tackling Izalbe and holding him on the ground until police arrived and handcuffed Izalbe.
"(Izalbe) flat out told me 'I'm schizophrenic, I don't know what I'm going to do,'" Ramon said, explaining why he bear hugged the suspect to the floor, "When someone says something likes that, you have to take those threats seriously." .....
Ramon made $15 per hour and said Walmart could have trouble recruiting workers for that position in the future if employees fear getting fired for using appropriate judgment. Complete article

Former cop files federal suit against Pa. Walmart 11/21/2017
The former Bradford City Police officer who lost his job for allegedly shoplifting at Walmart — charges he was acquitted of — has filed a federal negligence lawsuit against the retail giant in federal court in Erie.
Shayne Miller is suing Walmart Stores Inc. for an alleged incident earlier this year in which he claimed the self-checkout station didn’t alert him when it failed to scan items. He was subsequently charged with — and acquitted of — shoplifting.
According to the lawsuit, on April 21 and 26, Miller was shopping at Walmart, and used the self-checkout lane. Both times, he attempted to purchase Smithfield pork chops, but according to the lawsuit, scanned the wrong bar code on the product. The code didn’t scan correctly, but Miller claims he was not notified by the register or by the designated employee at the self-checkout stations that the items didn’t scan. Complete article

Daring shoppers plan to wear Walmart uniform to get away with freebies on Black Friday? 11/21/2017
Some employees are getting entrepreneurial and selling their Walmart vests for as little as $20 to hopeless shoppers looking for a come up on Black Friday.
The online scheme would allow non-Walmart employees to wear the uniform and walk out the door undetected without paying for a thing.
A post on Facebook captioned, “Walmart vest for sale $20 wear it and walk right out the door without paying on Black Friday.”
This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened. Each year there are ads like this that pop up on social media around Thanksgiving. They often go viral considering many people are simply desperate for a good Black Friday deal, let alone for free.
Unfortunately for those brave enough to buy the uniform and give the plan a shot, they won’t get far because employees are searched. Complete article

Midnight mayhem & crash reported at Colorado Walmart 11/25/2017
A man allegedly behind the wheel of a van who refused to stop for law enforcement near the parking lot of the North Avenue Walmart Thursday night — just as crowds massed for the store's midnight Black Friday sales — fled authorities and crashed his vehicle near the store before being arrested.
An arrest affidavit for Michael Patterson, 51, of Grand Junction, denied driving the van that crashed over two curbs and down an embankment into a fence when he was apprehended near the store.
A Mesa County sheriff's deputy first saw the van just before 11 p.m. near 29 and Patterson roads, and realized the vehicle had expired tags. A search of the van's license plate led to Patterson, who had multiple warrants out for his arrest, according to a report. The deputy noted the man driving the van matched a mug shot of Patterson. Walmart Sues City Of Sheboygan Wisc. Over “Excessive” Property Taxes 11/29/2017
Last week, Walmart continued a pattern by suing the City of Sheboygan over property taxes. The company says its Sheboygan outlet has been over-taxed by the city, as the debate over “dark stores” in Wisconsin continues.

Houston Tx. Neighbors Said No to Walmart and Invested in Black-Owned Businesses After the Hurricane 11/29/2017
Three months ago, Hurricane Harvey ripped through Houston and coastal Texas, killing 82 people, displacing more than 60,000, and leaving parts of Houston with severe wind and flood damage. As the city recovers from the strongest hurricane to hit in more than 50 years, many of its residents in historically Black neighborhoods continue to struggle for resources and support.
“Houston is the tale of two cities,” explains Andrew Cobb, cofounder of West Street Recovery, a nonprofit disaster response organization that formed out of Hurricane Harvey to aid residents in underserved neighborhoods.
“If you flew in from the airport and drove around, you’ll probably be like, ‘Well, I don’t see the problem,’” he says. “But upon investigation, you’ll see that a lot of people in Black and brown and low-income neighborhoods still need help. These people are living in homes with severe water damage, and they are breathing mold.” Complete article
