After the slowest month for shootings last August, they went back up in September with at least nine shootings, including two immediate deaths; and the person arrested for one of those shootings died a few weeks later, although the explanation for his death is still under investigation. One of these shootings didn't actually take place on Walmart property; however it resulted from a fleeing shoplifter that trespassed into an office building that was supposed to be closed to the public, so it was still a result of activities at Walmart. Another one was a result of a drug transaction and also resulted in a stolen pick up.
There were at least another eleven gun related crimes including three carjackings, two of which also resulted in chases. Several others involved armed robberies; and one of them involved someone stealing firearms from Walmart, which doesn't seem to secure their own guns nearly as well as most firearms dealers and leaves them unattended unlike most arms dealers. Walmart has had many more guns stolen from their stores in the past including one where it was used in a police shoot out and another where they never took the key that was taped to the display case in the back off when they set it up.
As far as I know these kinds of foolish mistakes only seem to happen at Walmart.
In addition to the two carjackings that led to a chase there were at least a dozen more crashes, chases drunk drivers as a result of activity at Walmart or chases of shoplifters that began at Walmart. At least two of these involve people that intentionally crashed into Walmart and another two resulted in deaths. there were also two bodies found at Walmart parking lots, which brings the Walmart body count for the month counting the ones from shootings crashes or other reasons up to at least seven.
Raytown Missouri Alderman Eric Teeman recently said, "Walmart’s bleeding this town," as a result of their large problems with crime there. earlier this year they had an officer involved shooting where a shoplifting suspect was killed after disarming the officer of her taser and she shot him with a firearm. In a deal they offered Walmart ten years ago they agreed to give them tax breaks to come to town so according to Teeman and other local officials even though they have an enormous crime problem there they're not paying taxes to help finance the police; which means the taxpayers are subsidizing a major crime problem.
This may be among the worst deals towns have given Walmart, from the perspective of their citizens, but it isn't the only one like it. Walmart has been negotiating deals like this behind closed doors for decades, as researchers like Stacy Mitchell has reported, and over the opposition of a lot of local leaders they often push through deals that give Walmart major advantages over the competition and this enables them to increase their profits once they wipe out the competition; but the local towns get stuck with the tab for increased police activity and lost tax revenues from the businesses that didn't get these subsidies.
Even while they're being exposed for gouging one town in one part of the country they're constantly trying to do the same thing in other parts of the country. Reporting on this is usually low profile which is how they get away with it.
The only thing new about this problem is that it's being reported in the traditional media; but they still only report it at the local level where it doesn't get much attention!
In another example of what might be preferential treatment by those with political connections a judge was arrested at Walmart and charged with assault after he demanded a receipt after turning in some jewelry he found in case the owner didn't claim it. When the clerk refused, perhaps because it wasn't policy or she wasn't trained to provide receipts for that purpose, he allegedly became aggressive grabbing her hand hurting her, and she decided to press charges. the trial date was set unusually fast, but then before trial charges were dropped.
Few people who weren't lawyers would even think of asking for a receipt under those circumstances, they would either keep it or turn it in; however even though it is unlikely that it would draw so much attention if it weren't a judge it is also unlikely that the charges would be dropped so quickly, if at all, if it was anyone else without political connections.
Walmart also had at least half a dozen knife or hatchet related crimes, mostly thefts and at least one of them involved a stabbing, while most were only used for threats. They had at least one more brawl and one more fire that may have been an arson, although the cause hasn't been reported yet.
Several employees have been stuck or punched and at least couple elderly people in their seventies and eighties were robbed or assaulted, more fights including one where someone was struck with a club, and at least one pepper spray incident, which is typical at Walmart. One of their bomb threats this month involved someone that threw a back pack in the store saying it was a bomb, presumably on camera, which is unusual. They usually just call it in or leave a note so it's harder to catch them but there are practically never actual bombs, especially if they make a threat. Except for one in Mississippi a couple years ago where a threat was made and a bomb went off the few actual bombs they get are not accompanied by threats.
Walmart had at least a couple more recalls this month including a jogging stroller and another cheap dresser that fell on children; you would think they would learn to make them so this wouldn't happen but every time they recall one dresser for falling on children they start making others, some that eventually get recalled as well.
Walmart is being protested as part of a "Make America Worse" campaign and sued for discrimination again. They're being investigated for Securities fraud and not paying for California deposits. The protests in South Africa have turned violent.
There is an enormous amount of evidence to indicate that this company is doing everything they can to restore a monopoly system without competition and they clearly have an enormous amount of political help, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten this far. Arkansas nominated one of their officials in the Attorney Generals office and one state is now allowing people to pay child support at Walmart, an advantage which isn't available to competitors.
If we're going to have a monopoly system we should stop pretending it is a free market and demand disclosure and reasonable regulations that doesn't allow them to get away with epidemic levels of fraud. I'm not sure that nationalization is the way to handle it but they're being subsidized so much by the government that it might be justified, and is definitely worth much more consideration.
Alice Walton just sold an enormous amount of her stock, only a month or two after her brother did the same. She did well, although not quite as well as her brother; however I can't help but wonder if they know something we don't. Insiders routinely get much better deals on Wall Street than the rest of us.
They want to come into peoples homes and stock their refrigerators when they're not home now. What could go wrong? One of their gas stations gave the wrong gas ruining a few engines, and they offered to reimburse people for the gas; as usual with Walmart if people want full reimbursement for the damages they must sue, and they won't have the same legal help, perhaps unless they make as much noise with the public; that is often the only way to get Walmart to respond.
How did this country allow this oligarchy to get so powerful? They certainly couldn't have done it without help from the media and political establishment and an enormous amount of complacent people not paying attention.
A former candidate for Louisiana mayor was arrested for disorderly conduct rapping while the police told him to get off the counter.
Have you ever had a two foot snake come out of the toilet paper after returning from Walmart?
How often do you see people wearing diapers and a gorilla mask at your Walmart dancing and greeting people before pretending to steal bananas that were already paid for?
If you were watching Walmart surveillance video and had access to the intercom system while watching a couple making adult videos in the aisle would you announce of the intercom, "Attention adult Walmart customers we have special entertainment show, however please keep your children away."
No? Well, neither did the people at Walmart; and the police didn't figure it out until later when they found the video on the computer of the couple after catching them at the library, as well.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in September 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

‘Trump & Walmart Make America Worse’ campaign makes stop at Penn State 09/08/2017
On Thursday, representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union parked their big, red truck next to the Allen Street Gates, garnering the attention of many passersby.
It was parked there in order to warn Penn State students about the moral — and political — cost of those competitive prices on its “2017 Trump & Walmart Make America Worse” campaign.
“We wanted to take Trump’s very iconic slogan, you know, ‘Make America Great Again,’ and really turn it on its end and show he’s not making America great,” said Amy Ritter, communications director for Making Change at Walmart. “His values and agenda is making America worse, and those values and agenda line up exactly with Walmart…We wanted to take that slogan and really show that not only is [Trump] making America worse, but he and Walmart are kind of working together to make America worse.” Complete article

Judge arrested and charged with assault after scuffle with clerk at Va. Walmart 09/08/2017
A state court judge who reportedly found some jewelry in a Walmart parking lot, then became angry when a clerk wouldn’t give him a receipt for it, was arrested in Stafford County, Va., and charged with misdemeanor assault and battery.
Jeffrey W. Parker, 65, is the chief circuit court judge in Fauquier County, Va., and also sits on the bench in Loudoun and Rappahannock counties. He has been on the bench since 2001. His lawyer, Robin C. Gulick, said Friday that he had no comment on the case, though he noted that it was Parker who called 911 and asked for police assistance.
A spokesman for the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said the dispute occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Walmart on Route 17 north of Fredericksburg. Deputies spoke first to Parker, who told them that after finding jewelry in the parking lot, he took it to the customer service desk and asked for a receipt “or something in writing … so that he could return and claim the items if the rightful owner was not found,” Maj. Donald R. Lenhart of the sheriff’s office said.
The clerk apparently declined the judge’s request. The clerk told the deputies she was going to put the jewelry in the store safe in case the rightful owner returned, Lenhart said. Both the clerk and other Walmart employees told deputies that “Parker got aggravated and aggressive when the clerk would not provide a receipt,” and that “Parker then reached across the counter and grabbed her hand, causing her hand to hurt,” Lenhart said.
The clerk told deputies that she was afraid of Parker and that she wanted to pursue charges against him, so the judge was taken into custody, Lenhart said. Parker was taken to a magistrate’s office, charged with assault and battery and released without being jailed on an unsecured bond.
Walmart has no corporate policy on whether finders are keepers on store property, said Charles Crowson, a Walmart spokesman. Lost and found policy is left to the individual stores.
Parker was reelected to a third eight-year term by the Virginia General Assembly in January. His salary is about $166,000, according to a recent study by the National Center for State Courts. It was not immediately clear whether his status as a judge would be affected by his arrest. Complete article

Wal-Mart accounting for e-commerce, overseas asset sales draws SEC scrutiny 09/13/2017
Wal-Mart Stores’ e-commerce site and its inconsistent disclosures related to overseas divestitures triggered interest from the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to correspondence released by the regulator.
E-commerce sales at Wal-Mart U.S., where the company is competing directly with Amazon, grew 60% in the most recent quarter. Wal-Mart has already increased the number of products offered on Marketplace to 67 million items, supplemented by items from third-party sellers like Toms and Vans shoes.
According to comment letters from the SEC recently made public, the regulator wrote Wal-Mart WMT, +0.75% CFO M. Brett Biggs in May and asked how the company earns and accounts for revenues from these third-party sales. Wal-Mart had never disclosed to investors how it was accounting for this revenue or where to find it on the income statement. The SEC also asked who owns the inventory—the third-party sellers or Wal-Mart—and what services, if any, Wal-Mart provides sellers. Complete article

Walmart underpaid millions in California deposits 09/12/2017
The world’s largest retailer underreported the number of containers it distributed over a three-year period in California, leading to $7.2 million in unpaid deposits to the state. The balance was paid in full late last year after it was revealed during an audit.
Walmart operates more than 250 retail locations and 14 distribution centers in California. The company distributes beverage containers, meaning the company is subject to beverage distributor requirements under California’s container redemption laws.
In California’s unique deposit program, consumers pay a 5- or 10-cent surcharge on drink containers to the retailer, with the amount depending on container size. This is known as California Refund Value (CRV). The retailer passes that money to beverage distributors, and those distributors then move it on to Calrecycle. Complete article

Cool Or Creepy? Walmart To Deliver Food And Put It In Your Fridge 09/2/2017
PHILADELPHIA (CNN)–Getting groceries delivered to your home is not new. But what about having someone that you don’t know come into your house to put away the food?
Walmart is doing just that. It announced Friday that it’s testing a so-called straight into your fridge service — and you can watch it happen on your phone thanks to cameras installed in your house.
Here’s how it works.
Walmart spokesperson Ravi Jariwala said the retailer partnered with smart security company August, which makes locks that you can monitor on your phone. August reached out to customers in Silicon Valley to find people to sign up for the delivery service.
The customers taking part in the trial can buy products from Walmart.com, including groceries. Once the order is placed, a driver from the crowdsourced, same-day delivery startup Deliv goes to pick up the items.
If you aren’t home when the driver rings the doorbell, the Deliv driver will receive a one-time passcode for the August smart lock that was already authorized by the customer.
The Walmart customer will also be notified when the doorbell rings so they can watch on the August doorbell cam.
The August app also links to other cameras that may be installed in the house, like those from Google/Alphabet-owned Nest, so that consumer can watch the driver drop off packages and even put the food away in the kitchen. Complete article

Bounty hunters took the wrong woman into custody at Columbus Walmart. A jury awarded her $950,000. 09/22/2017
After about four hours of deliberations late Thursday, a Muscogee County State Court jury returned a verdict of almost $1 million against a Columbus bail bonding company in a case of mistaken identity.
The jury awarded Jasmine Hayes $350,000 in compensatory damages and $600,000 in punitive damages against John F. Law, doing business as Ace Bonding Co., said Hayes’ attorney David Rayfield of Waldrep Mullin & Callahan LLC.
“I believe that the jury did see what Jasmine Hayes went through and that was part of the decision,” Rayfield said Friday morning. “But I think it’s a great verdict for Columbus because of what it means about how bail bonding companies will conduct their business going forward. I think this jury absolutely sent a message.”
The $950,000 verdict will be reduced to $600,000 total, according to Georgia law, Rayfield said. Though the jury awarded $600,000 in punitive damages, there is a $250,000 cap under law because the jury did not find that the bounty hunter acted with intent. Complete article

‘Walmart’s bleeding this town,’ official says as Raytown Missouri faces police layoffs 09/27/2017
As Raytown city leaders and police officials wrestle with cutting more than $3 million from the police budget — and eliminating as many as 17 officers — they are seizing upon a particular burden on police: Walmart.
In a city of about 10 square miles officers made more than 500 arrests last year at the Walmart store at 10300 E. U.S. 350. The store is the scene of about 30 percent of Raytown’s reported serious crimes.
Meanwhile, Walmart does not contribute taxes for police services. The TIF deal that built the store a decade ago diverts about $300,000 in tax dollars away from public safety every year.
On Tuesday, as the Raytown Board of Aldermen talked with police officials about cutting about 30 percent of the department’s budget and its full-time positions, Alderman Eric Teeman suggested labeling the Walmart a “public nuisance.”
“Right now, we’re getting this much from Walmart,” Teeman said, making a “zero” sign with his hand. “Walmart’s bleeding this town.” Complete article
To get a crime-ridden Walmart, Raytown gave away the store 09/28/2017
Here’s what not to do if you now hold local office, or aspire ever to serve the public in that capacity: Do not — Do. Not. — hand out the enticements known as tax increment financing, or TIFs, as if they were Halloween candy, to anyone who shows up at the door in plastic fangs or a sparkly tiara.
Otherwise, you could wind up like Raytown, giving away the store to get the superstore.
For a decade, the town has effectively subsidized Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, giving it a pass on about $300,000 in taxes every year. That’s the deal then-officials made to get the store built.
And now, as Raytown is being forced to cut about 30 percent of the local police department’s budget and staff, including 17 officers, that same police department is overwhelmed by calls about crimes in progress — at the Walmart.
Newark NJ Walmart wants its assessment slashed 09/29/2017 At any given time Walmart is constantly using legal and political means to try to get even more tax advantages than they already have. This is often based more on political connections or access to more legal help than competition than any reasonable sense of fairness; and they continue doing this even when they're caught in out right lies or other problems!
