Wal-Mart Crime report April 2017

Walmart shootings continue to happen at much faster rates than just a couple years ago with at least eleven this month and at least five deaths, related to these shootings, alone not counting at least half a dozen other people that died at Walmart for other reasons. Three of these deaths were murder suicides, although one of the murders didn’t take place at Walmart and wasn’t counted. There were also several more injuries as a result of the shootings. A couple of the shootings were accidental, but these didn’t hit anyone. Last months count of shooting also rose from eight to nine, since there was one that happened on the thirty first but wasn’t in national news for a few days after that.

Delayed or missed reports of events are not uncommon, even when they’re major ones; this may mean that additional reports might not be included in this listing. In some cases even major events like shootings or potential shootings could easily be missed. There were two reports of court settlements for past events including one that was for a major panic that didn’t include a shooting but wasn’t listed last November. Another was also for a major gang related shooting that didn’t get reported last June. This one was reported about five or six days after, when they caught the suspect; but the initial report, if there was one didn’t show up in the searches. In most cases, if there are additional shootings that don’t get counted they’re most likely to be suicides or accidental shootings, which usually draw much less attention.

One of the shootings from 2012 where a manager was injured was allegedly a result of his own involvement in a conspiracy to rob the store; and another old shooting in Beavercreek Ohio cost the city $400,000 it was only the second police shooting they had in recent history and the other one involved the same officer.

There were eight other gun related incidents, mostly robberies or attempted robberies, one of which had a man that was also armed with a machete. One of them was a Walmart worker who was angry about a card game and made numerous threats to shoot up the store before they arrested him and found a gun that could have been used to carry out the threat. Walmart also settled an old lawsuit about selling ammo that was used in a murder from 2015. The terms of that settlement are as usual confidential so that no one can ever know whether or not justice is remotely fair when it comes to civil trials.

It’s not news that Walmart’s self-checkout aisles have been causing an enormous amount of problems including theft; however this time when a group of people found that it was giving out twenty dollar bills when it was only supposed to give out fives they went through the register over and over again until they got over a thousand dollars in change more than they should have. The state of Florida is using tax payer money to search for them and hold them accountable. This seems to be standard operating procedure; when there was a problem with the Electronic Benefits Transfer cards three years ago some of the recipients of them couldn’t get anything but others had their limits removed and when they took advantage of it instead of holding the people that made the mistakes accountable, they charged the people that took advantage of it.

When Walmart executives take advantages of rigged rules for their own profit they’re never held accountable but when it benefits customers or workers it appears to be the opposite.

One customer in Arizona found a note from a Chinese worker or “prisoner” who wanted to inform them about outrageous conditions. This was translated by several Chinese people who came up with almost identical translations. This, as usual raised concerns among customers and civil rights activists but business people and politicians, as usual don’t intend to do anything to investigate.

There were at least six different kidnappings attempted kidnappings or carjackings in six different states last month including one of an employee and four of children most of which failed but one of them was by someone pretending to be a Walmart security guard. There were also at least six attacks with knives, hatchets tomahawks or machetes including at least two that resulted in stabbings.

At least five people were found dead in there cars and one more died after running from police and falling off a cliff. The deaths in cars are usually not considered suspicious since poor people have to die somewhere. If human rights activists knew more about how many bodies showed up at Walmart they might want to understand the causes and prevent them; however business people that donate to campaigns don’t want to slow down business if it reduces profits by figuring these things out.

What happens if they find out that the epidemic fraud their business practices involve are contributing to these deaths or other crime problems?

Someone might want to fix it and it might not be good for profits so why keep track?

There were also at least four accidents high speed chases or purse snatchers that hit a customer retrieving it at least one resulting in a death, which means at least twelve people died at Walmart last month. This doesn’t count the vast majority of minor accidents which rarely make much if any news.

There were also at least four fire incidents, at least two of which were arson and one of those involved three separate fires that were successfully set while the arsonist escaped with stolen merchandise, at least temporarily as a result of the distraction. That’s unusual they almost always catch them faster when they try this trick that never seems to work, not that thieves and arsonists figure this out.

There were at least ten major assaults or brawls including one where a suspect slammed an employee from behind when he attempted to stop his girlfriend from shoplifting; and another major brawl that went viral on the internet, again.

Is there ever a month that goes by without a Walmart brawl on the internet?

Certainly not November or December but even the rest of the year they’re pretty common.

Walmart is always being sued. Some of the money customers give them is routinely used for their legal defense fund which gives them much better treatment than the rest of us in the courts. This month their lawsuits include cans that allegedly weren’t stored properly falling and hitting a boy and a professor that had his job title on his fishing license listed as cleaning toilets.

Why the hell does Walmart handle fishing licenses? Isn’t that the governments responsibility? Corporations seem to be taking over the government and treating it like a fully owned subsidiary and they have ‘Some of the best digital-forensics labs” now. Most of this is either done in secrecy or it is reported only at low levels where few people pay attention, which accomplishes the same thing.

Walmart was exposed for selling Tuna that was endangering Dolphins again. Boycotting Walmart is becoming increasingly less effective since the government gave them a big enough advantage to dominate the market except for the shares they divided among the other oligarchies that behave almost as bad, at least 95% of the public spent at least a little money at Walmart last year.

When you find a Syringe near the baby food the management will always tell you it’s still safe so don’t worry.

A rhino iguana and Dozens of slithery snakes showed up at Walmart last month for some reason and they got another public relations disaster when they fired an 88-year-old greater for not stopping a wild turkey from the store. He said they never gave him a manual that told him what to do when Turkeys go shopping; but it worked out OK another store hired him.

Remember when we used to expect to look forward to retirement?

Do people that buy there salads anywhere else but Walmart find decomposing bats in them? Twice?

Did you ever find heroin that might have been left behind by someone on the run in the pants pockets you bought at Walmart?

Ever get so drunk you set your underwear on fire then pull a knife out when the employers try to put it out?

Me neither, at least not that I’ll admit.

Stabbings aren’t limited to Walmart though several people were stabbed in an apartment complex as well.

I mention this because the person that allegedly did this was on LSD and they found him walking through Walmart naked.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

Maybe next month will be the first time there are no shootings or other strange things at Walmart.

Any bets?

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in April 2017. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Sebastian Fla. Walmart Update On Bomb Threat 04/01/2017

SEBASTIAN, Florida – Last night, the Sebastian Police Department responded to a bomb threat at the Walmart store.

As previously reported by Sebastian Daily, who provided live coverage by one of the witnesses, the incident was described as a hostile situation as police evacuated the store.

Walmart employees were sent to the Medical Center and customers were asked to leave their shopping carts and vacate the property.

Commander John Blackledge, a spokesman for the Sebastian Police Department, tells us that a string of events took place prior to the store’s evacuation.

“Best we understand is that the call was made to Vero (PD or Walmart; don’t know which). We were informed that the call came from the relative of an employee, who stated he was going to blow up Walmart where he or she worked,” Blackledge told Sebastian Daily.

“The determination was made that it was the Sebastian Walmart. The Sebastian Walmart Manager made the decision to evacuate,” Blackledge added.

Soon after, whoever made the determination about the “employee” working at the Sebastian store was apparently mistaken, and they found out the employee worked at the Port St. Lucie Walmart. Complete article

Cops searching near Waveland Mississippi Wal-Mart after child abduction report 04/03/2017

WAVELAND After responding to a report of a possible child abduction near the Waveland Wal-Mart, authorities believe a witness may have seen a man grabbing a child and walking through the woods to a nearby apartment complex.

Hancock County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Don Bass said they received a third-party report of a girl being abducted from the store about 7:30 p.m.

Waveland Police Chief David Allen said a woman flagged down a Hancock County sheriff’s deputy and told him she saw a man take a girl by her hair into the woods from the parking lot. The witness told authorities the girl appeared to be about 7 years old.

No one has come forward to report their child missing, Allen said.

CSI: Walmart: Some of the best digital-forensics labs don't belong to the police—they're run by banks, tech companies, and retailers. 04/03/2017

A highly secured digital-forensics laboratory sits tucked inside an enormous complex of low, boxy buildings in Bentonville, Arkansas. To get in, analysts have to scan their hands and enter a unique password. Inside, they comb through video-surveillance records and spirit data out of devices that have seen better days, like a hard drive that had been crushed with a hammer and dropped from a third-story window.

Despite the sensitive nature of their jobs, these investigators aren’t high-level FBI agents or foreign spies. They’re Walmart employees.

Walmart is one of six companies in the United States that run digital-forensics laboratories accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors. American Express has an accredited lab; Target has two of them.

Those companies—and many others that operate labs without formal accreditation—have built up digital-forensics capabilities once limited to law enforcement. They have the tools and the know-how to investigate corporate theft and online fraud, or track a data breach to its source. That might involve extracting information from a locked, encrypted smartphone, or a damaged computer hard drive. Or it could entail analyzing network activity to figure out which employee, for example, is siphoning off sensitive data to sell on the black market. Complete article

Mad over card game, employee threatens to shoot up Kansas Wal-Mart, police say 04/04/2017

A Kansas man was arrested Saturday after allegedly threatening to shoot up a Wal-Mart in Salina because of a dispute with some of his store co-workers.

Kevin J. Struble of Abilene was arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail on Saturday following two separate threats he made to shoot people in the store in less than a week, according to a Salina Police Department report.

Capt. Paul Forrester said that Struble – a third-shift employee at the store at 2900 S. 9th St. in Salina – first became upset and threatened to “shoot everyone in the store” over a “Magic: The Gathering” card game during the early-morning hours of March 27.

Struble, 24, and some other employees were playing the game while on break, Forrester said. During his shift on Wednesday, Forrester said, Struble again became upset and threatened to shoot up the store a second time.

While investigating a non-related shoplifting incident at the store on Wednesday, police were made aware of Struble’s alleged threats, Forrester said. On Saturday, officers were waiting for Struble when he arrived for work and later found a loaded Hi-Point handgun in his vehicle. Complete article

Walmart Exposed for Selling Dolphin-Deadly Tuna in Costa Rica 04/04/2017

Retail giant is sourcing its Suli brand tuna from Mexican fishing fleets that harass and kill marine mammals, says nonprofit

Investigations by the nonprofit International Marine Mammal Project (IMMP) have revealed that, in its Costa Rican locations, Walmart has been selling its own brand of canned tuna that has been caught using fishing methods that harass and kill dolphins. These practices make Walmart’s tuna brand — called Suli — dolphin-deadly, though Suli tuna cans carry a misleading seal claiming that the tuna is dolphin safe.

For reasons that remain unclear, in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, tuna and dolphins often swim and congregate together. (This is unique to the region: Tuna and dolphins don’t frequently congregate elsewhere.) Because dolphins are easier to spot from the surface of the water than tuna, tuna fishermen in the region often target dolphins, chasing entire pods into their enormous purse seine nets so that both tuna and dolphin are caught together. This practice is dolphin-deadly: Many dolphins drown or die of stress during the capture process, including young calves who become separated from their mothers during high-speed chases. In some cases, fishermen get into the water and wrangle the dolphins out of the nets, but these individuals are still traumatized, may be injured and bleeding, and are vulnerable to any predators that may be lingering about. Nearly Every American Spent Money at Wal-Mart Last Year 04/12/2017

When it comes to where Americans like to shop, one thing is immediately clear: They're after value.

According to new data from the NPD Group's Checkout Tracking Service, the largest percentage of Americans spent money at Walmart, McDonald's, and Target last year.

Some 95 percent of U.S. consumers shopped at one of Walmart's 4,700 stores or on its website in 2016, according to NPD. It was followed by McDonald's at 89 percent and Target at 84 percent. That means more than 5 in 6 U.S. shoppers made a purchase at those chains.

Among retailers, Dollar Tree recorded the biggest gains from 2015. It opened nearly 600 stores under that name last year. Chick-fil-A, which is also in expansion mode, was the biggest gainer among restaurants. Complete article

88-year-old Wisc. Walmart greeter fired after wild turkey wanders into store 04/13/2017

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The 88-year-old Walmart greeter who was working the doors the day a wild turkey wound up inside the store says he was shocked to learn a few days later that he'd been fired because of the incident.

Attention shoppers: There's a turkey in Aisle 3

Bob Tallinger said he was told that he should have alerted a manager when he first encountered the bird. "It starts and it goes back around and then it walks out," Tallinger, of Waukesha, said of the March 27 incident. A Humane Animal Welfare Society official was called in and ultimately was able to capture the bird by luring it into a net.

In his eight years as a greeter at the store, Tallinger said he'd never seen anything like it.

His wife, Janet Tallinger, said her husband's termination is unfair.

"He was hired to be a greeter and that's what he did. He never saw a book of rules that said if a wild turkey comes in here you better run and get management," she said. "Granted he's gotten older and granted he's lost a little memory but nevertheless that hasn't prevented him from being an excellent greeter." Complete article

Montana State University professor sues Wal-Mart over fishing license that says he cleans toilets 04/1/2017

A Montana State University professor is suing the world’s largest retailer for libel after, he says, an employee at the Bozeman store listed the occupation on the professor’s fishing license as a toilet cleaner.

Gilbert Kalonde, assistant professor of technology education at MSU, filed the suit Thursday in Gallatin County District Court. He is being represented by Jim Taylor, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana. ....

The suit claims the move was done to expose Kalonde to “hatred, contempt, ridicule or obloquy.”

On Feb. 24, 2016, Kalonde renewed his fishing license at Wal-Mart. He said he told the employee that he worked for MSU, but “clean toilets” was left as Kalonde’s occupation on his license.

Kalonde said that later during a lunch break at the university, he showed his teaching assistant his license while some of his other students were around. The teaching assistant saw Kalonde’s listed occupation and asked if he had changed jobs.

Kalonde says he was “very shocked and embarrassed” by the incident. Complete article

Man allegedly puts heroin in pants at Ohio Walmart 04/1/2017

CAMBRIDGE -- A man incarcerated in the Guernsey County Jail showed his concern for others Thursday when he led Cambridge police officers to suspected heroin he had stashed inside a pair of pants at a Wal-Mart on Southgate Parkway where he had been arrested earlier this month.

City resident Joseph E. Galbreath, 27, is facing one count each of obstructing official business and resisting arrest when he goes to trial on April 24 in the Cambridge Municipal Court.

But that didn't stop him from leading officers to the suspected heroin after first alerting his mother about the hidden drug.

According to Cambridge police reports, a Wal-Mart manager called the officer at approximately 5:33 p.m. Thursday to request a police K-9 check the men's clothing department for possible narcotics left there when Galbreath was arrested on April 7 following a brief foot pursuit inside the store. Vigilant Mich. Walmart customer thwarts attempted purse-snatchers 04/19/2017

BANGOR TWP, MI -- Some would-be Walmart purse snatchers didn't quite make off with their loot, thanks to the intervention of a vigilant customer.

About 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, Bay County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Walmart at 3921 E. Wilder Road in Bangor Township for an attempted larceny complaint. A 42-year-old woman had been shopping with her purse in her cart when she was approached by a young man, said Sheriff Troy R. Cunningham.

The man engaged her in small talk, then grabbed her purse, Cunningham said. The man and a male friend took off running, pursued by the woman and some fellow customers.

The two men jumped into a beige Toyota sedan parked in the store's lot. The woman caught up to the car and tried opening a door, but was unable to, Cunningham said.

A male customer driving a minivan saw the commotion and pulled in front of the Toyota. He then exited his minivan, yanked open one of the Toyota's door, and grabbed the purse, Cunningham said.

The Toyota's driver put the car in reverse and struck the woman and another parked vehicle, then took off, the sheriff said. The woman suffered a slight laceration on her hand and did not require medical attention. Complete article

“Today in the Cherokee Nation, as elsewhere in the country, prescription opioids are more deadly than heroin,” reads the lawsuit, filed in the District Court of the Cherokee Nation against six companies that also include McKesson Corporation, Cardinal Health Inc. and AmerisourceBergen. “Defendants created conditions in which vast amounts of opioids have flowed freely from manufacturers to abusers and drug dealers.” Lawyers for the Cherokee Nation—which is made up of 14 counties in Northeast Oklahaoma—say the lawsuit is the first of its kind.

The suit charges that the six companies have long had the ability to reduce the death toll and financial impact of the opioid epidemic in the Cherokee Nation—adding up to hundreds of deaths and hundreds of millions of dollars—but they instead chose to pursue profits. Complete article

Sierra Vista Ariz. woman finds note from 'Chinese prisoner' in Walmart purse 04/25/2017

TUCSON - A Sierra Vista woman says a note from a ‘Chinese prisoner’ ended up inside a purse at her local Walmart.

Laura Wallace’s mother-in-law purchased a purse from the store using a gift card she’d given her. She later found a tiny folded up note inside a zipper compartment.

The note was written in Chinese. Wallace had it translated.

“It actually stated that the person who wrote that was a prisoner in China,” she said. “Basically what their situation was and how they work long hours, 14 hours a day. And they don't have a lot to eat.”

To be sure, the note was translated by two more Chinese-speaking people. All came up with a similar translation.

“I'm very sure that that's exactly what the note says,” said Wallace.

Similar letters have been traced back to stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and K-Mart over the years. In one case, the writer was tracked down in China. Complete article

Shoppers turn Walmart self-checkout into personal slot machine 04/28/2017

WINTER HAVEN, Florida (KTRK) -- Police in Florida are looking for a group of people who used a Walmart self-checkout as their own personal slot machine.

Last week, at least eight people who appeared to know each other allegedly took advantage of an employee's error to take more than $1,100 in $20 bills from the store.

At around 12:34 a.m. Saturday, the group went to check out at the Walmart in Winter Haven.

Police said a bald man with a large tattoo on his right shoulder scanned and paid cash for two items, but soon found himself better off when the machine spit out a $20 bill instead of the $5 and change he was owed back.

While most people might have alerted a store employee, police said the man told his friends or family members, including three children, about his discovery.

You can probably guess what happened next.

According to investigators, the group spent more than 20 minutes bilking Walmart out of their $20 bills from the machine, ringing up one small item each in order to receive change that should have included a $5 bill. Complete article

Bradford woman sentenced for Pa. Walmart standoff 04/28/2017

SMETHPORT — A Bradford woman who caused the evacuation of Walmart in November when she entered the store with a gun under the belief that she was being followed was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court.

Debra S. Faucher, 58, will serve 18 months of probation. Additionally, in lieu of incarceration, she will have to report five days a week for six weeks from 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at an assigned community service site.

President Judge John Pavlock explained that he felt house arrest — which the plea agreement called for — was not a strong enough sentence for the fear of the victims in the incident, but that she would not be able to continue her mental health treatment in jail.

Faucher entered a guilty plea April 6 to one count of recklessly endangering another person, a second-degree misdemeanor.

Faucher pleaded guilty to allegations that on Nov. 16, she entered the stock area of Walmart in Foster Brook while holding a gun. During the incident, she accidentally touched a woman with the gun, putting people at the scene in fear.

Court records filed at the time of her arrest indicated she was suffering from mental health issues that day, and she came into the store asking for staff to call 911 because she believed she was being followed. Complete article
