There were at least seven shooting incidents at Walmarts this month, including at least two deaths and at least five more wounded, plus at least one incident where several cars and a cruiser were shot. There was also an evacuation due to suicidal person with a gun that didn't lead to a shooting. Another evacuation was caused by an emotionally disturbed man who picked up a machete and a hammer and started shouting threats. There was also one person killed in a drunken accident, a carjacking that lead to a chase
On average there were at least one more evacuation every other day this month due to bomb scares this month. It is hard to know if this is above average since they're reported sporadically but Walmart almost certainly gets over two hundred bomb threats per year, perhaps much more. Actual bombs are much rarer and are almost never accompanied by threats.
A Walmart worker stopped a purse snatcher and returned it after chasing the thief; at times in the past chasing and fighting thieves has led to employees being fired often with outrage from people involved, but there are no reports of that happening yet this time. Perhaps they've learned from the past or they waited to make this decision. In another incident a shoplifter using a lighter to open a product accidentally started a fire; and a couple people were arrested after a brawl broke out.
Bad customer service or disgruntled customers led to numerous complaints this month including one where a car was stolen during an oil change, like in past incidents the victim was forced to get a rental at her own expense while asking Walmart to cover it. Another incident involved a customer slapping and threatening an employee over a return. A couple claim they got bedbugs from a bed they bought at Walmatt, which Walmart denies. Another Walmart ahd confusion over towing policies and at least one of their customers barely avoided being towed twice due to confusion.
More foreign objects were found in food at Walmart, this time it is a recall for chicken with metal in it and there may be other items with plastic.
They're sending their managers to "customer service academies" in an effort to fix some of their problems. Small bussinesses rarely have nearly as many problems even without "customer service academies."
There are additional stories about how they want to increase their influence on public schools through the Walmart Foundation or other means.
But their sales are clearly past their peak; they've had declining same store sales in many locations often for years at a time for a while now; but for the first time they had declining total revenue. In the past they've been able to offset losses in same store sales by opening new stores but now they're closing them instead.
It shouldn't take a genius to realize that they can't expand forever but our economic system is based on the belief they can do just that.
Another naked man was arrested at Walmart and they had an even stranger incident with customers visiting their Walmart vision center.
Some people might think it might be sexist to doubt if a women working at the vision center decided to send naked pictures of her private parts to men if they would consider it a crime and report it. However that isn't what happened, it was of course a male employee who sent pictures to customers and the sixth women to get them knew how to trace them and reported him to the police.
I could make these things up but there's no need.
Strange things really do happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. For regular updates about events at Walmart through the month see Walmart Watch on twitter or check the Wal-Mart Wall; they have helped compile some of this information. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in March 2016. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Man critically injured after shooting in Richmond Va. Walmart parking lot 03/16/2016
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Police have identified the suspect arrested in the Walmart parking lot shooting on Sheila Lane.
The suspect, identified as Randall C. Hicks, 26, was charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Both charges are felonies.
The shooting happened around 11:55 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the store near the intersection of Forest Hill Avenue and Chippenham Parkway. Police say a customer was simply putting groceries in his car, when in broad daylight, someone approached him with a gun. The man was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
Witnesses on the scene say they heard a shot fired. An NBC12 crew saw someone being put into an ambulance and then driven away with a police escort. "It's not surprising, not for this area, but it is concerning," said Jen Martin, a customer at the store.
"You bring your kids here, expect it to be a safe environment and boom, you've got shots out of nowhere," said another customer. Complete article

Couple says they got bed bugs from padded headboard bought at Missouri Walmart 03/16/2016
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - A Kansas City couple has a brand new apartment with brand new furniture and a bad case of bed bugs.
The owners say a new bed is to blame, but they company they bought it from isn’t doing anything to investigate or fix the problem.
“I freaked out. I was almost in tears,” said Brittany Drummond.
She said she and her boyfriend were horrified at their discovery of bed bugs crawling out of their padded headboard.
“It’s bad. You don't want to live in that,” said Charles Mincey.
The hidden bed bugs explain a lot. Drummond had a mysterious rash that she now realizes are bed bug bites.
“I never would have thought that would have happened to me,” she said.
She’s itchy and angry because when she contacted Walmart, who sold her the bed, their response showed indifference.
“There's nothing we can do. Uhm, we're not going to do anything for you,” she recounted. Complete article

The ‘Walmartization’ of public education 03/17/2016
The Walton Family Foundation — which says it has given some $1.3 billion in K-12 education across the country over the last two decades — announced early this year that it is committing $1 billion over the next five years to help expand charter and other school choice options across the country. What the effect of that financial support will be on public education is explored in this post, by Jeff Bryant, director of the Education Opportunity Network, a partnership effort of the Institute for America’s Future and the Opportunity to Learn Campaign. He has written extensively about public education policy. This appeared on AlterNet, and I am republishing it with permission. (The original has multiple footnotes, which I have removed.)
By Jeff Bryant
Walmart’s recent decision to close 269 stores was a blip on the national media radar, but it was big news in small towns and suburban neighborhoods across America.
“Now we have to figure out how to do our shopping,” a Walmart customer in Baldwin Hills in Southern California lamented.
“Before Walmart’s arrival, Winnsboro had two grocery stores,” a local reporter in that South Carolina town noted. Now that Walmart is gone, so is convenient access to groceries and other retail goods. ......
But what if that story isn’t just about businesses anymore? What if instead of a closed factory or shuttered store, the story is about a closed public school? What if the consequence of these types of “business decisions” isn’t a grown man having to look for another job or an elderly woman having to figure out a new way to pick up her prescriptions, but a child having his or her education significantly disrupted or a whole community left without convenient access to schools? Walmart’s first-ever revenue drop: End of an era? 03/31/2016
For the first time, giant retailer’s revenues shrank from the year before
Its shares have fallen below retail competitors and the broader market
Has the company reached its growth limit?
Not every milestone is worth celebrating.
For the first time ever – or at least since the company went public some 45 years ago – Walmart's revenues shrank from the year before, according to its annual financial filing released Wednesday.
Walmart is clearly having trouble adapting its gigantic stores to the Internet age. To be sure, it is a retail juggernaut that brings in half a trillion dollars (that’s right, trillion) in sales every year. And with more than 11,500 stores in 28 countries, there’s no way it will disappear anytime soon.
Still, Walmart might have just hit its growth limit. Complete article
