Wal-Mart Crime report January 2016

In addition to the usual crime problems Walmart has demonstrated once again that they have little or no regard to local consumers, especially poorer ones. They're closing 269 stores, 154 of them in the US with little notice. This is only a small percentage of their stores but many of them seem to be in areas where they might be needed the most after they managed to run their competition out of business.

In one case after destroying a little league park they left after only a short time. This is just one of several examples where they came in long enough to destroy the competition then left. This is especially bad for areas with little or no public transportation and poor people without cars. In most cases as several studies have indicated below crime goes up when they come to town and at least one area is concerned that it will get even worse when they leave since there's no jobs or other stores now that they've destroyed the competition.

There should be little or no doubt that we're now in an oligarchy system where multinational corporation aren't accountable to those with the least amount of political power. Many of these Walmarts were forced through over objections to local residents, often after secret planning and donating to politicians. Now their closings were kept secret until the last minute. There's also one story about once community that can't even find out who approved storm water permits for a Walmart that is damaging their neighbor's property.

If Walmart has their way one of their former board members, Hillary Clinton, who is also close friends with Alice Walton, will be elected president and if that happens there is little or no chance that she'll do any more to stand up to this oligarchy.

In addition to there store closings they had their share of shootings again including at least two that resulted in deaths and one more that wasn't at Walmart but someone was shot and killed by police who had apparently came in shooting to 9 Walmarts over the past few months after a traffic stop.

A deputy was fired after being caught stealing ammo from Walmart. There were at least two chases and one crash this month that began at Walmart. At least three attempts to stop shoplifters led to assaults on employees or attempted assaults including one where the shoplifter attempted to tase them. There was at least one case where a Walmart employee was arrested for stealing a wallet.

They had two recalls this month; one of 90,000 pounds of beef; and another of griddles with a potential shock hazard. A Walmart worker also lost his arm in an accident.

Two lawsuit came out against Walmart, one that they retaliated against a pharmacist who tried to prevent unethical practices that could harm the customers, and another that they illegally fired workers. Another lawsuit is just beginning about a women who allegedly was told to chose between her family and her job. If one of the more fanatical Republican's or Hillary Clinton wins the election then it might become even harder to bring successful legal actions against this oligarchy. Some how Clinton managed to get the endorsement from a union that claims to defend commercial workers including Walmart; however there was a rift in that union and some people claim that they're going against the wishes of their own members.

One intoxicated man decided to do his drinking while in Walmart but couldn't stay awake long enough to leave and was carried out.

If you ever work at Walmart and you see a stripper stealing lingerie and condoms you might want to let this one go if you want to keep your fingers.

They don't pay enough for that.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. For regular updates about events at Walmart through the month see Walmart Watch on twitter or check the Wal-Mart Wall; they have helped compile some of this information. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in January 2016. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Repeated attempts to obtain comment on the suit from officials of Arkansas-based Walmart were not successful.

Wolfinger's suit focuses on what she claims was her mistreatment while working as a shift manager. She was being required to work seven days a week when she received the "career or kids" threat, she contends. Complete article

Former Walmart board member Clinton wins backing of Walmart critic 01/12/2016

The United Food and Commercial Workers union said Tuesday it was backing Hillary Clinton for president, citing her support for "paid leave, stable schedules and higher wages" for U.S. workers. Conspicuously absent from its announcement was the fact that Clinton is a former Walmart board member, having served on it from 1986 to 1992, only quitting when she moved to the White House.

That's notable because UFCW is arguably Walmart's leading critic. It has funded and run the nonprofit activist groups Wake Up Walmart, Making Change at Walmart and Oraganization United for Respect Walmart as part of a broader effort to unionize the company's estimated 1.3 million employees. .....

Clinton's connections to the Arkansas-based company are deep. In a 2004 speech, she said founder Sam Walton called her one day and asked her to serve on the board, making her the first woman to serve on it. At the time, the company was being criticized for its lack of diversity.

Her husband, Bill Clinton, was Arkansas governor at the time and the two families knew each other socially. Clinton also worked at the Rose Law Firm, which represented Walmart. A 1994 New York Times story identified Clinton as the firm's lead lawyer for the company.

As a board member, Clinton was paid $18,000 annually plus $1,500 for each meeting she attended, according to a 2006 Associated Press report. By 1993, the Clintons owned an estimated $100,000 in Walmart stock, which was put into a blind trust after the 1992 election. They flew on the Walmart corporate jet 14 times during 1990 and 1991. .....

During a January 2008 Democratic primary debate, President Obama attacked his then-rival by citing her Walmart connections. "While I was working on those streets watching those folks see their jobs shift overseas, you were a corporate lawyer sitting on the board at Walmart," he said. Complete article

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Louisiana: Man killed in NOPD encounter shot his way into 9 Walmarts, McDonalds 01/1/2016

NEW ORLEANS – A man fatally wounded in a shootout with an NOPD officer has been identified as the man who shot his way into 10 different stores in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes in armed robbery attempts in recent months, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

Col. John Fortunato, a JPSO spokesman, said ballistics identified Calvin McKinnis, 33, as the suspect in five robberies in Jefferson Parish during which a gunman shot his way into the stores and then tried to rob them. He was only successful in one of the five tries between May 23 and Dec. 1, according to Fortunato.

McKinnis was also linked to five crimes in Orleans Parish, according to the JPSO.

McKinnis was killed by an NOPD officer after a traffic stop on December 14.

Fortunato said that in each of the Jefferson Parish incidents, the suspect used a 9mm handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun to commit the crimes. Each time the suspect fired shots to get into the business and once inside tried to get money from the workers inside. Complete article

Walmart found to have fired striking workers unlawfully 01/21/2016

Walmart broke the law by firing workers who protested outside its headquarters in 2013, a labor judge ruled on Thursday.

An administrative law judge ordered Walmart to give 16 workers their jobs back and pay them for the time they went without work. Walmart must also hold a company meeting at 29 stores to inform workers of their right to strike.

Walmart refused to allow its associates to strike, and it fired and disciplined workers at 29 stores for unexcused absences.

Workers claimed their right to strike was protected by the National Labor Relations Act. On Thursday, Administrative Law Judge Geoffrey Carter sided with workers, saying that Walmart unfairly retaliated against its associates. Complete article

Wal-Mart: It came, it conquered, now it's packing up and leaving 01/25/2016

The Town'n Country grocery in Oriental, North Carolina, a local fixture for 44 years, closed its doors in October after a Wal-Mart store opened for business. Now, three months later -- and less than two years after Wal-Mart arrived -- the retail giant is pulling up stakes, leaving the community with no grocery store and no pharmacy.

Though mom-and-pop stores have steadily disappeared across the American landscape over the past three decades as the mega chain methodically expanded, there was at least always a Wal- Mart left behind to replace them. Now the Wal-Marts are disappearing, too.

"I was devastated when I found out. We had a pharmacy and a perfectly satisfactory grocery store. Maybe Wal-Mart sold apples for a nickel less," said Barb Venturi, mayor pro tem for Oriental, with a population of about 900. "If you take into account what no longer having a grocery store does to property values here, it is a significant impact for us." Complete article

Residents question who signed off stormwater permits for SC Wal-Mart, water park and hotel 01/25/2016

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – North Augusta residents, upset about stormwater runoff, are in a legal battle with the state’s Department of Transportation. SCDOT constructed a discharge pipe under I-520 not far from their properties. Resident say they could start pointing some of the blame towards North Augusta.

Back in October I covered a meeting between North Augusta officials and those residents. The city said it wasn’t responsible for the flooding.

Storm water runoff is believed to have caused more than hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage for some North Augusta residents, including John Burke.

It’s been a five-year legal battle with the South Carolina Department of Transportation but a new Motion to Compel and for Sanctions, filed Monday, claims the DOT is withholding information that could change everything.

“The hydrology information was for this pipe that’s been installed in the ground sometime between 2013 and 2014,” said Burke.

The motion says Burke investigated the water runoff from the Wal-Mart shopping center he believes was traveling to his property through the sewer system developed by SCDOT. Complete article

Beware: Wal-Mart's Raises Are Not a Victory 01/26/2016

The past year has been a very interesting one for Wal-Mart. For years -- decades, really -- the low-cost retailer has been a stout bulwark for low prices and low wages, against increasingly fierce pressure from left-wing activists who want Wal-Mart wages to be closer to those of the old manufacturing jobs that have disappeared. Wal-Mart ferociously refused to cave into pressure -- until suddenly in February of last year, the company announced a substantial hike in its entry-level wages.

This has not gone quite as you might have expected. The labor activists were not as pleased as you might have thought; they complained that the company offset its higher wage costs by cutting back on the hours that people worked, at the same time as investors complained that the higher labor costs were coming out of corporate profits. And longtime Wal-Mart workers seem to have been made unhappy by the rising minimums, which meant that they would be getting less of a premium for their loyal years of service. Complete article

Wal-Mart's U.S. closures leave carless residents few food options 01/27/2016

FAIRFIELD, Ala. — Wal-Mart's decision to shutter 154 stores across the country means that, starting Thursday, residents without cars in a neighborhood near a historically black college outside Birmingham, Alabama, will have to cross dangerous roadways on foot to get fresh produce and meat. Come Friday, folks in Coal Hill, Arkansas, will need to drive 15 miles to get to the nearest supermarket and pharmacy. Low-income neighbors of Wichita State University in Kansas, too, will be losing quick access to fresh groceries.

The store closings by the world's largest retailer are creating three new food deserts in these neighborhoods with nearly 15,000 residents combined, according to an Associated Press analysis.

One of them is in Fairfield, Alabama, a hard-luck suburb of 11,000 about 8 miles west of Birmingham. The Wal-Mart there sits on a highway marked by dreary swaths of abandoned commercial buildings, fast-food restaurants, payday lending businesses and gas stations. By late last week it was already out of fresh food, and shoppers who picked over the remaining items also worried that the store's shutdown could affect competitive prices nearby.

"That gives the stores the opportunity to raise their prices because you don't have anywhere else to go," 66-year-old Diane Jones said as she loaded bags into the trunk of her older sedan. Complete article

Residents Concerned about Crime Increasing After Walmart Closes 01/28/2016

It’s closing day for dozens of Walmart’s across the country including 4 in this area.

The loss of the retailer could hit a north side neighborhood especially hard.

The sign is gone here at the midtown Walmart.

Closing this store means the loss of nearly 300 jobs to an area that desperately needs help.

For many people who live in this part of town it's the place where teenagers get their first job.

When Talgo closed it's operations in Milwaukee after Governor Walker said no to high speed rail in Wisconsin. This store is where some families found jobs to stay afloat.

With employees getting ready to close the doors for good many say this area has seen too many losses in jobs.

Buildings that was once an Office Depot and Lowe's still sit empty here.

And there's not enough public transportation to help people get to other places in town where they can go work. Complete article

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - A 59-year-old middle Tennessee man was arrested for public intoxication Wednesday after allegedly drinking alcohol inside a Walmart and then falling asleep.

Jury orders NH Wal-Mart to pay pharmacist $31.22 million in bias case 01/29/2016

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) was ordered by a federal jury in New Hampshire to pay $31.22 million to a pharmacist who claimed she was fired because of her gender and in retaliation for complaining about safety conditions.

The Concord jury deliberated for 2-1/2 hours before ruling on Wednesday for the plaintiff, Maureen McPadden, after a five-day trial, her lawyers said.

McPadden claimed that Wal-Mart used her loss of a pharmacy key as a pretext for firing her in November 2012, when she was 47, after more than 13 years at the retailer.

McPadden said she was fired in retaliation for her raising concerns that customers at the Wal-Mart store in Seabrook, New Hampshire, where she worked were getting prescriptions filled improperly because of inadequate staff training. Complete article

Bernie slams tax-dodging Walmart heirs: They ‘thank you for paying taxes’ so they don’t have to 01/30/2016

Taking aim at how profitable corporations avoid paying U.S. income taxes, 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders slammed the wealthy heirs of the Walmart fortune, pointing out that U.S. taxpayers are the ones keeping their employees above the poverty line and not them.

Speaking at Iowa Wesleyan University, Sanders noted that questions have been raised as to how taxpayers will be able to afford some of the proposals he has put forward.

“I have been criticized a lot because people say, well you know, ‘Bernie’s ideas are really good, we like like the idea of creating jobs. But, you know, how is he going to pay for it?”‘ the Vermont Independent said.

Sanders then puckishly turned to the Walton family, heirs to the Walmart fortune.

“Just to give you an example of what a rigged economy is all about. I mentioned the Walton family — the wealthiest family in the world — being very appreciative that you are supporting them. They’re very happy about that,” he told the crowd.”And they asked me to send you their thanks.” Complete article
