To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart didn't call the police and ask them to put out an arrest warrant for a bunch of birds that infested their store at Chicopee Mass.; but they began their month by having this go viral on the internet and the employees acted as if it was normal. This isn't the first time they've had something like this happen; there have been numerous similar problems with animals including other birds and more often mice. This shouldn't be surprising when you consider how much bigger their stores are than smaller grocery stores. Their lack of local discretion due to all decisions being based on corporate policies in Bentonville Ark. make it harder for them to deal with this or many other problems.
There were several shooting incidents this month including at least a couple that led to panics and evacuations of the store, one where the police killed an armed man, and another where a shoplifter used a flare gun to shoot a loss prevention officer. There were also at least two robberies that led to car chases, and another that took entire register when they refused to open it. Police were involved in at least three fights with alleged shoplifters, including one where the shoplifter jumped in a cruiser in a failed get away attempt, with the cruiser. People try to steal cruiser at Walmart more than most people might expect, not too long ago someone managed to take the cruiser in Indiana.
They've also had more than the usual number of bomb threats this month, some of which led to panics and evacuations. Part of the reason for this is almost certainly the holidays, but automated call with bomb threats that began last month are also part of the reason for this. They were similar to the bomb threats that led to the closure of schools in Los Angeles, while New York got the same ones and recognized them as a hoax; however they didn't get nearly as much attention. The month closed out with a second wave of bomb threats for New Years. This would provide an opportunity for anyone that is inclined to research the reactions to them and how they're reported in the media. If they did this and let the public know about them they might not be so inclined to panic over them, since threats are rarely if ever accompanied by actual bombs and vice versa.
Research into this could also enable them to recognize the root causes of why all these bomb threats and reduce them dramatically; unfortunately it is unlikely they will do this without grassroots pressure, since it would almost certainly implicate many of the policies of corporations that donate enormous amounts of money to campaigns.
Three of the bomb threats this month were from disgruntled customers, which is quite common, along with disgruntled employees, although most of the time it is not reported. If people with legitimate concerns had an easier time getting them addressed they would be less likely to retaliate one way or another. Not that many people resort to drastic actions but many do get frustrated and angry; and even though rational people don't agree that bomb threats are an appropriate response it would still be a good idea to address the concerns of those that don't resort to bomb threats.
This month there appears to have also been someone striking out by putting razor blades in the handle of a shopping cart, whether it was retaliation by a disgruntled customer or not. This has been going on for months in a California Walmart and it is one of many ways that angry people have been striking out.
Walmart has fired someone again for reasons that don't pass the laugh test again; someone found money in the parking lot turned the first few bills in right away found more and waited half an hour before turning it in. After reviewing the video they fired him for not turning it in fast enough. They spend time checking in on people that do good deeds and fire them which outraged a lot of people once again.
Another study came out indicating that Walmart is responsible for 400,000 jobs lost due to outsourcing at a time when Walmart is trying to take credit for bringing jobs back. This is standard operating procedure; they get caught just about every year trying to market "Made in the USA" when it is actually overseas.
Does anyone think Walmart actually has any credibility?
Another E. coli recall has expanded to Walmart and they're trying to sue Puerto Rico which is on the verge of bankruptcy for tax increases. Corporate policies and influence are a major reason why many states are on the verge of bankruptcy and Puerto Rico doesn't even have representation in the Congress so it is more difficult for them to stand up for themselves against powerful corporations.
Don't corporations like Walmart realize that they have to allow the states and countries they operate in to remain functional instead of robbing them blind?
They're closing a lot of their stores in Brazil because they're not profitable enough; this is just one of many countries where they're not doing so well in.
They also arrested an 89 year old who resorted to stealing her medications and arrested a homeless man who went on a rampage in Hawaii. Not taking care of citizens is almost certainly a major part of reason why Walmart has higher crime rates than local stores.
A one year old found methamphetamine at one Walmart and a woman at another was on methamphetamine when she went through Walmart eating an entire rotisserie chicken among other things and drinking wine. They waited till she had quite a meal before stopping her. She was also homeless and it will cost tax payers much more to keep her in jail than it would to address our social problems.
Unfortunately politicians are more concerned with addressing concerns of campaign contributors than the majority of the public; so tax payers can be expected to continue to foot the bill for Walmart's high crime rates.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. For regular updates about events at Walmart through the month see Walmart Watch on twitter or check the Wal-Mart Wall; they have helped compile some of this information. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2015. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Walmart allegedly fires employee for turning in found cash too slowly 12/02/2015
NISKAYUNA, NY (KTRK) -- A Walmart maintenance worker on the job for nearly two decades says he was fired for moving too slowly to turn in $350 he found in the parking lot.
Michael Walsh, 45, says he was called into the manager's office of the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Niskayuna, New York on November 6 and promptly fired for "gross misconduct," The Times Union reports.
Walsh was picking up garbage in the store parking lot when he found a $5 bill. He says he immediately went inside and turned the cash over to his manager.
When he went back outside to resume his duties, Walsh says he found a small stack of $20 and $10 bills. The bills were loose without an envelope or identification as to who owned the cash. ...
Two days later, he was fired after a manager showed him surveillance tape which showed 30 minutes had elapsed from the time he found the cash to the time he turned it in, The Times Union reports.
Walsh says he was forced to turn over his badge and his 10 percent off Walmart discount card after 18 years on the job.
"I enjoyed my job, I was a good employee and always got to work on time," Walsh says. "I got treated like a common criminal." Complete article

Police: Suspect shoplifted, fought law officials at Windsor Ca. Wal-Mart 12/04/2015
A man stopped Friday afternoon in the Windsor Wal-Mart for suspected shoplifting fought with security guards and a Windsor deputy before his arrest, while outside the store deputies and the sheriff’s helicopter searched for two other suspects, according to Windsor police.
Police arrested the man in the store after a considerable struggle, which included the suspect trying unsuccessfully to take the deputy’s electric stun gun, sheriff’s Sgt. Shawn Murphy said.
The man, who apparently had attempted to steal several grooming items, including hair gel, was arrested on much more serious felony charges when the incident escalated. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, assaulting an officer, assaulting a security guard and resisting arrest. Murphy said drug charges also could be added as the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Complete article

Wal-Mart Sues Puerto Rico Over ‘Astonishing’ Tax Increases 12/05/2015
The Puerto Rico unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. sued the island’s government, seeking to overturn a new tax the retailer calls unfairly high.
Enacted in May, Puerto Rico’s Act 72-2015 increases to 6.5 percent from 2 percent the tax on goods imported from offshore affiliates to local companies with gross revenues of more than $2.75 billion.
The increase comes as the U.S. commonwealth struggles to restructure $70 billion in debt, more than every U.S. state but New York and California. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider reinstating a law that would let Puerto Rico’s debt-ridden public utilities restructure their obligations.
The new levy raised the estimated cumulative income tax on Wal-Mart Puerto Rico Inc. “to an astonishing and unsustainable 91.5% of its net income,” according to the company’s complaint, filed in federal court in San Juan Friday. Complete article

Fortune: Study Says America Lost 400,000 Jobs Because of Walmart's Imports 12/09/2015
The Economic Policy Institute recently published a study estimating how many jobs Walmart has effectively eliminated or displaced as a result of its contribution to the U.S. trade deficit with China.
The study states that between 2001 and 2013, the inflated deficit eliminated or displaced 3.2 million U.S. jobs. As the world’s largest retailer, it seems to follow that U.S.-based Walmart would be a key contributor to the climbing deficit and subsequent job losses. The EPI estimates that the retailer’s Chinese imports account for 15.3% of trade deficit growth in that time period.
The study states that, in total, the U.S. trade deficit resulted in a net job loss of nearly 1 million in 2001; that number rose to over 4 million by 2013. It estimates Walmart alone contributed to over 400,000 job losses over those 12 years, and speculates that about 75% of those were manufacturing jobs which offer better pay and benefits than other affected industries, particularly for workers who lack a college education. AP: Supermarkets including Kroger, Wal-Mart selling shrimp peeled by Burmese slaves in Thailand 12/14/2015
EDITOR’S NOTE: More than 2,000 trapped fishermen have been freed this year as a result of an ongoing Associated Press investigative series into slavery in the Thai seafood industry. The reports also have led to a dozen arrests, millions of dollars’ worth of seizures and proposals for new federal laws.
SAMUT SAKHON, Thailand (AP) — Every morning at 2 a.m., they heard a kick on the door and a threat: Get up or get beaten. For the next 16 hours, No. 31 and his wife stood in the factory that owned them with their aching hands in ice water. They ripped the guts, heads, tails and shells off shrimp bound for overseas markets, including grocery stores and all-you-can-eat buffets across the United States.
After being sold to the Gig Peeling Factory, they were at the mercy of their Thai bosses, trapped with nearly 100 other Burmese migrants. Children worked alongside them, including a girl so tiny she had to stand on a stool to reach the peeling table. Some had been there for months, even years, getting little or no pay. Always, someone was watching.
No names were ever used, only numbers given by their boss — Tin Nyo Win was No. 31. Complete article

Shopper Finds Razor Blade Wedged in Handle of Ca. Walmart Shopping Cart 12/14/2015
MARYSVILLE -- Shopping carts are not usually thought of as being dangerous, but for Julie Nicolas of Wheatland, they most certainly were.
"As I was wiping along the bar underneath where the plastic's wedged, there was a razor blade," Nicolas said.
It happened last Saturday at the Walmart on North Beale Road in Marysville.
"The corner nicked me right there. Thank goodness I didn't get cut or anything. I stopped in time," Nicolas said.
Terrified, Nicolas said she reported the incident to a store associate.
"I handed it to her, and she threw it away, I asked her, 'Is this a thing?' And she said 'Ya, it is a thing.'" Nicolas said.
FOX40 spoke to a Walmart manager off camera who said someone has been putting razor blades in their shopping carts periodically for the past few months. Some employees said they have been asked to check the carts outside and even wear gloves to protects themselves. Complete article

Robinson woman indicted in Wal-Mart purse snatching shooting 12/1/2015
A Robinson woman who pulled a gun on a suspected purse snatcher last month and fired a shot in his direction after he started to run away was indicted Wednesday.
A McLennan County grand jury indicted Emma Cotten, 28, on a deadly conduct charge in a Nov. 20 incident in the parking lot of a Bellmead Wal-Mart, sources familiar with the case said Wednesday.

Cotten, who is seen on the video pointing a pistol at a suspected thief as other men had him pinned to the ground, appears to fire over the man’s head toward the American Bank building after he broke free from his captors and started running through the Wal-Mart parking lot near the Interstate 35 access road. .....

Walmart Needs to Be Held Accountable for Displacing American Jobs 12/17/2015
To great fanfare and media coverage, Walmart announced three years ago its "U.S. manufacturing initiative" and, in the years since, the company regularly likes to tout its commitment to "American renewal" and to buying American made products.
Unfortunately, a closer look at the company's real record shows that it has actually been sending hundreds of thousands of jobs overseas at the very same time it has touted these programs to the American people.
This is a constant pattern from irresponsible companies, like Walmart, who use public relations to tout new initiatives while counting on the media to never fact-check these statements or investigate these programs.
The brutal truth, as a report released by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) found, is that Walmart is to blame for the loss of plenty of good American jobs. Complete article Walmart gets caught just about every year lying about "Made in the USA" products but it isn't reported in a high profile manner in traditional media nor do they remind people that is a standard practice that gets exposed over and over again!
