Early in the month there was a brawl that went viral in an Indiana Walmart; and another bigger brawl took place in the last couple of days of the month. This was only a small fraction of the bizarre things at Walmart this month.
Shortly after the first one news came out that they had been discussing major problems with crime at that Walmart and another one in Indianapolis for a while, without informing the public how serious it was. This is typical of the high crime problems that Walmart's have across the country. It isn't uncommon for a police chief to speak out against Walmart after large problems only to back pedal shortly after with a politically correct statement saying they're working to correct the problem and Walmart is helping. Not too long ago that is exactly what happened and was disclosed it followed a meeting behind closed doors with Walmart executives.
On one occasion local management said he didn't have the authority to confirm or deny whether or not a bomb threat was a result of the confederate flag. Perhaps that decision has to be made in the corporate office where they almost certainly don't know the details as well, if they know them at all.
It is hard to imagine why anyone might doubt this is a political response that does little to address the real problem.
The investigation for brawl at the end of the month has only begun; but it appears as if it might be gang related and the perpetrators might be mostly if not all minorities. Even though it hasn't been investigated there is already a lot of activity on the internet indicating that it is racially related, and some think it is evidence of blacks being more violent and less trustworthy. A review of the abandoned inner cities and past problems in them and the root causes for this will almost certainly indicate that a bigger problem might be the leaders that don't provide economic or educational opportunities for them. There is enough evidence to indicate that when minorities are given better opportunities they're less likely to be involved in this type of activities. Also what white supremacists and many politicians are very reluctant to see are what the minorities live with every day. This isn't reported well in the media but if society wants to address it they need to consider contributing causes not just quick fixes.
There were no shortage of gun related incidents including at least four or five where shots were fired, and people were kidnapped or killed at Walmarts this month; and three that led to SWAT stand offs although two of those stand offs took place elsewhere after the suspects fled Walmart. One of those involved a shoplifter that invaded a home of uninvolved people and the police, not the suspect, wound up using explosives on that home doing an enormous amount of damage. another involved a former Walmart worker who kidnapped a current worker and he wound up dead before the standoff was over.
Several people died as a result of stab wounds or an exploding car at Walmart as well. Reports about the exploding care say that the bomb squad was there to investigate but they haven't reported on whether or not it was a bomb that caused the explosion or not. If it was it will be the first one that I heard of where someone was actually killed because of a bomb at Walmart; they get hundreds every year and almost all of them are empty threats, the majority of the rest are simple soda pop bombs that aren't much more dangerous than firecrackers, but one bomb could change those statistics fast.
One of the gun incidents was people using guns as part of open carry protests which led to panics. There were also a couple thefts that led to car chases and crashes. This isn't uncommon even for relatively minor thefts.
Walmart has been exposed for rampant mold, huge overseas tax havens, selling imports marked as "Made in the USA," and large amounts of climate pollution which it doesn't report. The vast majority of their activities are proprietary so the activities they've been exposed at are probably only a fraction and the politicians that pass trade secrecy laws that protect all corporations, not just Walmart, routinely collect enormous amount of campaign contributions which come indirectly from consumers, although they never say, "Thank you for your business, a portion of the money you spend here will be used to lobby for laws that benefit Walmart at the expense of consumers and workers."
I don't know why they never say that; they do it; but I suppose it wouldn't sound to good to admit it.
They held a protester accountable for trespassing in Ohio but didn't hold the police accountable for shooting someone with a BB gun from the store that wasn't threatening anyone or try to look into Walmart's policies about packaging of their guns that led to this problem. this implies that the courts and police will use taxpayers money to suppress speech from citizens even though the money they spend at Walmart is used to finance speech they don't control. They didn't arrest Neil Young for his new album criticizing Walmart and Monsanto, or at least not yet.
It took close to a week if not longer for the police to charge people for the brawl in Indiana but when black customers were shopping too slow to suit the purposes of Walmart workers they didn't hesitate call the police and they got arrested. I'm not quite sure what charges they came up with for that but I never heard of it happening elsewhere. Another women is suing police for false arrest where she lost her job and there was no probable cause.
They had someone take one of their bats from the shelf and start smashing TVs, another that decided to drink Walmart's beer, without paying for it in the toy department, a customer that found razor blades embedded in the shopping cart handle, someone bit by a rabid bat, a naked man running through the store and pouring milk on himself, and another naked man passing out in the bathroom and telling people he had a bomb in his back pack when they woke him.
I didn't make these things up.
There are plenty of sources.
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart, some times lots of strange things!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. For regular updates about events at Walmart through the month see Walmart Watch on twitteror check the Wal-Mart Wall; they have helped compile some of this information. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in June 2015. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Armed Colorado Walmart shoplifter barricades self in home 06/03/2015
Police have cut power to the residence and surrounding homes. A SWAT team used explosives to blow off the doors of the home and used robots to move through the house.
AURORA - An armed Walmart shoplifter who fired shots at police has barricaded himself inside a Greenwood Village home Wednesday. The standoff continues into the evening.
Police are negotiating with the man who illegally entered the house in the 4200 block of South Alton Street. Police say a 9-year-old boy was home at the time the suspect entered, but the boy was able to safely escape to his mother who was waiting outside. The man fired shots at officers through the home's garage door's. No one was hurt. Early Thursday morning, police entered the home and the suspect once again fired shots at police. Officers did not fire back.
7 homes have been evacuated in the area. Several loud explosions have been heard in the neighborhood. Greenwood Village Police say they did open up part of the house for a better vantage point.
Some officers have been working for around 16 hours. Police say they've tried just about everything to get the suspect out of the home.
The standoff began as a shoplifting call around noon at the Walmart located at 9400 E. Hampden Ave. near Dayton Street. Witnesses told police the man, whose name has not been released, was seen leaving the store in a silver Lexus, which was later found abandoned at the Dayton RTD light light rail station on Interstate 225. Standoff suspect in Greenwood Village in custody after SWAT blows holes into home 06/04/2015
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. - Neighbors who heard gunfire and explosions late Wednesday and early Thursday on the 4200 block of S. Alton Street in Greenwood Village, emerged from their homes and couldn’t believe what they saw – a house with gaping holes instead of windows and doors.
“My reaction is sadness,” said Ardis Smith, “There is a family that lived there and they’ve lost everything.”
The holes were evidence of the steps taken by police to capture Robert Jonathan Seacat, a suspected thief who allegedly barged into the home Wednesday afternoon, and opened fire on police when they tried to arrest him a short time later.
Seacat was taken into custody Thursday morning after the SWAT team used chemical agents, flash-bang grenades and a "breaching ram" to end the nearly 20-hour standoff. Complete article

Walmart spews a huge amount of climate pollution with its shipping, but doesn’t report any of it 06/02/2015 By Stacy Mitchell and Walter Wuthmann
At Walmart’s annual meeting on Friday, shareholders will vote on a measure that would force the company to reckon with one of the biggest — and best hidden — sources of climate pollution in its vast global operations: shipping.
No company moves as much stuff across the world’s oceans as Walmart does. The climate consequences are immense. Ferrying all those cheap TVs, T-shirts, toasters, and toys from Asian factories to ports in the U.S. and elsewhere releases huge amounts of greenhouse pollutants into the atmosphere, including both carbon dioxide (CO2) and black carbon, a kind of soot whose climate impacts are less well-understood that those of CO2, but almost certainly just as menacing. Here's How Much Walmart Loses Every Year to Theft 06/05/2015
When you’re a company as big as Walmart, everything about you is huge, even your losses from shoplifting.
The retailing giant says that it loses about $3 billion every year from theft, or 1% of its $300 billion in revenue, Reuters reports.
Leading the effort to fight back against this so-called “shrinkage” is Greg Foran, head U.S. operations, who told reporters Thursday that cutting down on these loses was a key priority for the firm in coming months.

BEECH GROVE, Ind. -- Even before a fight between two women at a central Indiana Wal-Mart was caught on video, the City of Beech Grove had planned to take action against the store.
The fight inside the Wal-Mart went viral, playing on a world stage before an audience measured in the millions. But the fight between Wal-Mart and the City of Beech Grove has played out behind the scenes in a verbal skirmish over what the city considers to be an excessive number of police runs.
Between February and December of last year, officers with the Beech Grove Police Department answered 789 calls for service at the store. In just the first five months of this year, police have responded to 486 calls for service and officers are projecting more than 1,000 calls for service by the end of the year. .....

1 in custody following Eufaula Alabama Walmart police SWAT incident 06/09/2015
EUFAULA, AL (WSFA) - All has returned to normal at the Walmart shopping center in Eufaula, but earlier in the day law enforcement had all eyes on a potentially dangerous situation that, thankfully, turned out to be a false alarm.
The incident started around 9:15 a.m. when authorities received a call from Georgia authorities alerting them to a stolen vehicle in the area. The 2001 Ford Excursion was found in the parking lot of the retail store in the 3000 block of South Eufaula Avenue a short time later.
Officers made contact with a man in the SUV, later identified as 32-year-old Stephen Becker. Becker told police that he was a felon on parole and that there was a firearm in the vehicle. He was taken into custody at the scene.
According to police, Becker then told officers another person was inside the Walmart and was armed with a gun. Becker also said the second person was violent and had bragged about a recent killing.
"That person provided information that he was riding with another person, and he gave us a name and said that person was inside of Walmart hiding from us with a handguns with fear of being apprehended," explained Eufaula Police Chief Ralph Conner.
The Walmart was evacuated, as were nearby businesses and a college campus. Authorities then sent in a SWAT team and K-9 units to sweep the building. No other suspect was found. The situation was investigated as an active shooting situation even though there were no reports of shots fired or injuries. Complete article

BISMARCK -- A Dawson, N.D., woman shopping over the weekend at the Wal-Mart at 2717 Rock Island Place in Bismarck thought that her shopping cart handle had a sharp piece of plastic. Then her son noticed something.
"He said, 'Mom, there's something metal poking out of the handle,'" said Lisa Zimmerman, who discovered a long razor blade, such as those found in utility or box-cutting knives, was embedded in the handle.
Zimmerman said that she likely would have sliced her hand had she wiped the handle with a sanitizing wipe. Complete article

Please, not so fast Rekha Basu on embracing Wal-Mart business practices. [“Changes tempt us to give Wal-Mart a chance,” June 5.]
The improvement in Wal-Mart’s employee wages and treatment is admirable. However, Wal-Mart’s predatory business practices have destroyed Iowa small businesses and have been the major driver in killing American manufacturing jobs.
Iowa State University Professor Ken Stone conducted a 10-year study on Wal-Mart’s impact on small Iowa towns, concluding, “Studies in Iowa have shown that some small towns lose up to 47 percent of their retail trade after 10 years of Wal-Mart stores nearby.” Talk to small town Iowa retailers and they will tell you how Wal-Mart’s destructive pricing practices have devastated their businesses. Small town retailers that paid their employees decent wages and benefits and were often the town’s civic leaders have been driven out of business. Complete article

Florida Walmart calls police on black customers for shopping too slow 06/13/2015
A Walmart in Pensacola Florida in under fire after video surfaced of the police being called on some shoppers who were doing nothing wrong.
When the police showed up, they became aggressive with the shoppers, who were African-American, and asked them to leave. When the group tried to finish up their shopping before they got out, the police thought they were taking too long to leave and arrested one of them.
What’s more, this incident comes on the heels of another recent Walmart video, this one involving two white women.
In the video, two women came to blows, brawling in the aisle of a Walmart as one woman’s 6-year-old son gets involved and begins throwing shampoo. In stark contrast to the Florida shoppers, these women were not arrested and were in fact gone by the time police arrived. Their descriptions were not taken down by security, either. Complete article

Wal-Mart has $76 billion in overseas tax havens, report says 06/17/2015
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. owns more than $76 billion of assets through a web of units in offshore tax havens around the world, though you wouldn’t know it from reading the giant retailer’s annual report.
A new study has found Wal-Mart has at least 78 offshore subsidiaries and branches, more than 30 created since 2009 and none mentioned in U.S. securities filings. Overseas operations have helped the company cut more than $3.5 billion off its income tax bills in the past six years, its annual reports show.
The study, researched by the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union and published Wednesday in a report by Americans for Tax Fairness, found 90 percent of Wal-Mart’s overseas assets are owned by subsidiaries in Luxembourg and the Netherlands, two of the most popular corporate tax havens. Neil Young's new album blasts Walmart, Monsanto and more 06/19/2015
The legendary rocker has a new album coming out at the end of June called "The Monsanto Years." And it's a biting attack on the seed giant -- as well as other big corporations.
The title track refers to "the poison tide of Monsanto" and describes a farmer who "signs a deal for GMOs that makes life hell with Monsanto."
Young also lashes out at Starbucks in a song called "A Rock Star Bucks a Coffee Shop."
"I want a cup of coffee but I don't want a GMO. I like to start my day off without helping Monsanto," Young sings in his trademark nasal whine. .... "GMO labeling matters. Mothers need to know what they are feeding their children. They need freedom to make educated choices at the market," Young said in an e-mailed statement from his manager. ....
And he criticizes Walmart's labor practices in a song called "Big Box," which has the following verse: "People working part-time at Walmart never get the benefits for sure."
Safeway and Walmart were not immediately available for comment. But so far, it looks like Walmart (WMT) isn't planning to retaliate against Young. You can preorder "The Monsanto Years" at Walmart.com. .....
But it's been a busy week for Young. He lambasted Donald Trump for using the classic Young song "Rockin' In the Free World" when he announced he was running for president. Complete article

Woman sues Walmart, Spotsylvania Va. deputy, after wrongful arrest 06/29/2015
SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) - It was a crushing blow to Eve Davis' entire life. Davis says she was wrongfully arrested nearly two years ago when she went to have her Adderall prescription filled at Walmart in Spotsylvania County.
"When I am back after 10 minutes [to pick up my prescription], there was a cop there that arrested me. They believed that the prescription was fraud, because there was another prescription that had been filled prior to that," Davis said. "I was in jail for 16 days and I have a daughter that I wasn't able to see or get in touch with, and I lost my job... I had two jobs, and I lost both of them."
Even though a circuit court judge found there was no probable cause for her arrest and her record was expunged, the entire ordeal is having a lasting impact. Complete article

Report: Macon Wal-Mart mob wanted to see how much damage it could do 06/30/2015
Surveillance video of a wee-hours ruckus at a Macon Wal-Mart on Sunday shows a teenager race inside flashing gang signs ahead of a mob of four dozen or so people who burst in and smashed merchandise.
The commotion, which caused an estimated $2,000 in damage, appears to have been planned.
Some in the crowd also snatched a man, apparently a shopper at the Zebulon Road store, from a motorized shopping cart and dragged him to the floor, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said Monday.
The vandals, said to number between 40 and 50, sprinted down the store’s main aisle about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, “destroying merchandise displays and items,” a sheriff’s deputy’s report of the incident noted. Complete article
