Do you think it would be a good campaign slogan to tell the voters that not only will the candidate stand up to Walmart and Sam's Club but he'll steal their beer, paper towels and cashews if he can get away with it?
It doesn't quite look like we'll find out; apparently he didn't use that slogan and Alabama decided they didn't want him as their Republican candidate to look after their finances.
In Arkansas it was a constable that got into trouble for crime at Walmart when he was in a car while the driver destroyed a Walmart Shopping Corral. Usually the police are the ones to arrest the criminals not drive off with them.
The police have plenty to be concerned about when it comes to crime at Walmart even when they're not involved in it. There couldn't be this much of a problem without occasional comments about the subject from them; although they rarely do speak out on it too much, for one reason or another. But this month at least three police departments spoke out about the problems they've been having or expect to have with Walmart.
One of the Texas police talking about it said that before their Walmart opened “We had regular meetings with chiefs of police within Kaufman County,” he said. “Everybody that has a Walmart store says you can expect 400 to 500 more calls within the year.” Ironically he doesn't seem to consider whether or not Walmart policies might have something to do with it and even complements them “Walmart is very security conscious,” he said. “We had contact with loss prevention before the store opened because they wanted to take every opportunity to reduce thefts.” If they really wanted to do that they could have never opened their store, or at least try to figure out what small businesses are doing right that doesn't create so many problems with crime.
The Tennessee police concerned about crime at Walmart at least acknowledged that taxpayers end up footing the bill; they also asked Walmart to provide more resources but so far they've had no luck.
Many people might consider the added cost to police the high crime at Walmart with little or not help from Walmart might be another taxpayer subsidy.
The police also had other concern and occasionally have to put themselves at risk when dealing with high crime at Walmart; there were at least two assaults on police this month. If there aren't political reasons for some police to down play the potential impact Walmart might have there must be some other reason.
There were at least two car chases that took place in Walmrt parking lots or started there, including one where three sisters tried to chase down one of their husbands with two vehicles smashing into his car on at least one occasion. There was also an incident where at least two employees were stabed while trying to detain a shoplifter and there were at least a couple of carjackings. One employee was arrested for painting "loser" on her co-workers car before going into the bathroom and putting more messages there; and employees in another store were accused of passing around and using a charge card that was lost instead of turning it in.
Do any of these people think about the fact that these transactions are routinely caught on camera?
There were also the usual number of bomb threats but in one cases they actually discussed how often they happen when reporting it, to some degree. Thjey didn't mention that Wal-Marts around the country get hundreds if not thousands of bomb threats every year and that the taxpayers wind up spending an enormous amount of money to investigate them, of course.
That would be to much to expect; but they did quote a couple employees talking about how this was their third or second. Other stores almost certainly get more while some rarely if ever get any bomb threats. What is more unusual is that on one occasion they found a live grenade, although it didn't go off. Usually when they do find something it is just a simulated bomb or a sodapop bomb which isn't very powerful.
They made another clear demonstration of how decisions are made at the top then when employees follow orders and it creates problems they falsely blame the employee. Apparently they had a store policy that required them to card all people accompanied by someone purchasing alcohol and a large number of parents that tried to buy alcohol with their children present were turned down. Initially one of these incidents was reported in the news and they said the cashier was acting against company policy then they were flooded with calls to the news and to Walmart saying that many other people had the same problem.
An article that received little attention about local residents that didn't want a plant for one of Walmart's suppliers near their children's schools probably should get more attention. The return of manufacturing to the U.S. is long overdue but it should not be done with a corporation like Walmart making all the decisions. This should be done with more input from the public and safety of the environment should be given serious consideration.
On top of that more people might want to think about ways to restore factory direct options. Before the retail establishment consolidated into a relatively small number of oligarchies the factory direct stores provided reasonable competition and it was much better for workers, employees the environment and everyone else except the small number of people that control the oligarchies.
With real reform then prostitution wouldn't ‘make more sense’ than working at Walmart or any other oligarch.
Sometimes I'm glad I'm not a cop.
If I was trying to arrest someone and he responded by taking off his boxer shorts and defecating in the parking lot I might call in the dispatcher and say, "I changed my mind I decided to call in sick today."
Do you think the police chief would mind?
Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!
In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues uninvestigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in July 2014. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Metro police concerned about Walmart in Madison Tenn. 07/25/2014
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A brand new Walmart Supercenter in Madison means one-stop shopping and low prices around the clock.
For Metro Nashville Police it also means a lot of headaches.
"Looking at the numbers on our shoplifting, we do see a pattern developing from our Walmarts," said Commander Sebastian Gourdin.
Forty-seven percent of Madison's shoplifting incidents this year all happened at Walmarts. It's a huge drain on the department's resources.
"It takes away from officers being in the neighborhoods addressing crime issues and quality of life issues as well," Gourdin said.
Taxpayers end up footing the bill. ....
A Walmart spokesperson issued this statement: "We constantly evaluate how we can be doing better in terms of our asset protection measures and we are constantly updating those measures."
Officers say they have asked Walmart to add more resources.
"Some locations do have cameras, maybe put them in a different area. They always can hire more security," Gourdin said.
So far, no luck. Complete article

Did The NLRB Just Make It Easier For Unions To Organize Walmart? 07/25/2014
A decision this week by the National Labor Relations Board could make it much easier for unions to get a foothold in large retailers include Walmart, which has thwarted eorganization efforts by the United Food and Commercial Workers for years.
The board, in a case involving Macy’s, ruled that the UFCW can organize a subgroup of workers within a single Massachusetts store. By targeting just 41 cosmetics workers at the 150-employee store in Saugus, the union stands a better chance of winning the required election and establishing a position within the store to try and recruit more workers. It was based upon a 2011 decision involving a nursing home, Specialty Healthcare, that retailers hoped to contain within the healthcare industry.
“These are significant decisions, and put employers in a position where it’s much easier to organize” segments of the workplace, said Gerard Golden, a partner with Neal Gerber Eisenberg in Chicago who frequently represents employers in union negotiations. “Typically a union had to organize all the employees in a related sales position in order to hold an election.” Complete article

Kaufman Tx. police see jump in crime since city's Walmart opened in April 07/26/2014
KAUFMAN - Walmart is finally here and with it comes the option to buy all your groceries in the same place as your household items and electronics, something long-awaited in the city of Kaufman.
It also comes with an uptick in crime, Kaufman Police Department Chief Dana Whitaker said.
At a recent regular meeting of the Kaufman City Council, Whitaker mentioned briefly that, as some may have expected, there was a 28.9 percent increase in the number of calls for service to the KPD in the two months after Walmart opened compared to the two months prior.
Since the big box store opened April 23, the department received 72 calls from Walmart and put 32 people in jail for a total of 39 charges stemming from those calls, Whitaker told The Herald on July 7.
From Feb. 22 to April 23, the day Walmart opened, the department received a total of 847 calls for service across the city. From April 23 to June 22, there were 1,092 calls for service, an overall increase of 28.9 percent.
And for those who might think the influx could be chalked up to the typical ebb and flow of crime throughout the year, there was smaller, 1.46-percent increase in calls for service between the same two time periods in 2013.
The biggest increases in calls were for burglary investigation — a 250-percent uptick, from six to 21 calls — and theft in progress and theft investigation were a combined 18 calls prior to Walmart and 37 calls after for a 105.5-percent increase.
There were no shoplifting calls in the two months prior to store opening and after, there were eight.
Whitaker said the department expected this uptick.
“We had regular meetings with chiefs of police within Kaufman County,” he said. “Everybody that has a Walmart store says you can expect 400 to 500 more calls within the year.” .....
“Walmart is very security conscious,” he said. “We had contact with loss prevention before the store opened because they wanted to take every opportunity to reduce thefts.” Complete article

Jim Davis simply wanted to buy two six packs of Budweiser and some Smirnoff for his wife.
But when the 57-year-old from rural State Center reached the checkout counter at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Ames on July 13, with $80 in groceries and the alcohol, something odd happened. The clerk carded his 15-year-old daughter — not him.
Because the teen had no ID, the employee refused to sell to Davis.
It's part of Wal-Mart's recent efforts to experiment with new ways to thwart underage drinking, the store's customer service department told Davis in response to a complaint he made. The store has had a policy since 2003 requiring ID from all customers who appear under the age of 40. Complete article

Prosecutors: No charges in fatal parking lot shooting at Shores Wal-Mart 07/3/2014
Citing the "stand your ground" law, the State Attorney's Office on Wednesday said it will not file charges against the man who shot and killed another man July 9 in a Silver Springs Shores parking lot.
Authorities say Colt D. Thriemer, 20, of Weirsdale, shot and killed Thomas James "TJ" Brown, 21, of Silver Springs Shores, during an argument in the Wal-Mart parking lot off Maricamp Road.
Assistant State Attorney Amy Berndt noted in an eight-page report that Brown had been threatening to kill Thriemer and his family for months. Thriemer had told his parents, brother, girlfriend and friends about the threats. Those people were interviewed and backed up Thriemer's statement.
Berndt stated that most people, including Thriemer, knew that Brown had access to several firearms and carried a gun. She cited two previous police reports that mentioned Brown firing a weapon. Complete article

Police: Casselberry Walmart a target for criminals 07/30/2014
CASSELBERRY, Fla. — A Casselberry Walmart has become a favorite target for criminals.
In the past 30 days, 37 arrests have been made at the store and since January, they’ve made 202 arrests, authorities say.
But police hope a new plan they cannot yet unveil will make the store on State Road 436 safer.
Although most of the crimes are petty theft, some have turned out to be dangerous for officers.
Last week, two Casselberry officers were captured on surveillance video trying to stop the driver of a truck after he allegedly shoplifted, but the man took off with the officer still hanging onto his window.
Earlier this year, a man dressed as a woman stole 18 flat-screen TVs from the store.

In an article for Nerve.com titled “Why Prostitution Can Make More Sense Than Working at Walmart,” author and ex-escort David Henry Sterry says that he was drawn into the world's oldest profession when he was a broke 17-year-old in Hollywood.
Sterry says he was unable to support himself working at a fried chicken restaurant and was told he could make "real money" — $100 an hour — as a rent boy. Complete article
