Walmart Crime Report October 2025

Walmart had at least sixteen more shootings related to their business, although one of them wasn't on their property and another one was in the food court of a Galleria where they were one of the anchor stores; these shootings resulted in at least six deaths directly and a seventh when one of the suspects was fleeing the police on a highway when he got hit by a car, one of those fatal shootings wasn't on their property, but following a chase the suspects were found in a Walmart presumably still armed, which is just before one of the fleeing suspects was killed in traffic. Two of the shootings including one of the fatal shootings were by police officer killing a suspect, and shooting at another who wasn't hit, two other shooting deaths were a murder suicide, and there were at least seven more injuries from shootings.

In addition to the seven people killed directly or indirectly related to the shootings, there were six more deaths related to accidents, not counting the shooting suspect fleeing into traffic, one person killed in a stabbing, one other death on their property which police say wasn't due to fowl play, but didn't explain how it happened, and one woman that was trapped by bed rails that led to a Walmart recall, but this wasn't on their property even though they sold the defective property, bringing the total deaths to sixteen, which were reported last month, but the death related to the recall may have happened earlier. There was also a follow up on a previous death from April 2024 where an employee killed a co-worker in a drunken driving incident and was sentenced to 20 years in jail.

There were also half a dozen gun related crimes, mostly robberies, including one with a stolen firearm and one domestic threat with a loaded gun that didn't involve shots fired. On top of that one man was arrested after brandishing a bow and arrow.

There were at least two incidents where police officers were accused of wrong doing, both in uniform and on duty, with one of them working directly for Walmart, not the local police department. One of them was an Arizona officer accused of shoplifting who was immediately charged and put on administrative leave. If he isn't fired this will be unprecedented, since all police caught stealing from Walmart are routinely charged and fired, which happens at least a few times every year if not over half a dozen or more, at least that get reported.

The other incident involved a Tx. off-duty police officer working directly for Walmart in uniform. A woman at the store was with her five year old daughter had a seizure and she asked him to call 911, but he refused to for some unexplained reason. When they persisted he became even more combative allegedly telling her "I don't work for you, I work for Walmart." Her daughter received help from her family, other customers or employees, but not the police officer, who is supposedly trained to deal with emergency situations. It was only after the story was reported on Social Media that the Sheriff's Department issued a statement saying they would investigate, as far as I know Walmart didn't issue any statement on it. He was not immediately put on administrative leave or fired like police officers who get caught stealing from Walmart routinely are. If there's enough public pressure they might take some action, but it still shows a double standard. In other cases of police use of excessive force, or even totally unnecessary force against the general public, especially poor minorities, there are often no consequences or if they're charged they're treated surprisingly leniently.

Walmart's crime problems have skyrocketed as a result of all their corner cutting including the replacement of cashiers with self-checkout, and it costs tax payers a fortune since police, prisons and courts foot the bill for a large portion of the expenses, which to Walmart, is considered a "negative externality" as economists say, and one town in California is trying to pass a law requiring a minimum amount of employees at registers which will cut back on theft, and since some of these thefts escalate to violence when employees confront the thieves it will also increase safety for everyone involved, including customers, employees and even police. However, Target and Walmart are lobbying to block this law, and presumably to prevent it to spread to other cities or states, showing they're far more concerned about control and higher profits than the safety of their workers or customers. There are some cases where they're cutting back on self-checkout, but this is based primarily on what they consider more profitable, not true concern for safety, despite official statements saying the opposite.

Walmart had many more assaults, including at least two kidnappings of women, one where the kidnapper attempted to force a former girlfriend to shoplift for him, another kidnapping of a child that was rescued at Walmart in a different state, a man accused of strangling a woman, fights, attacks on employees, and police in some town are on alert due to fears of looting after aid to the poor is being cut due to the shutdown, which always cost more than they save, since they pay for everything anyway when they finally reopen the government. Furthermore, if there's a problem as a result of the shut down there's little or no chance they'll hold the politicians refusing to do their jobs accountable while prosecuting the poor for incredibly minor charges to the full extent of the law, perhaps even if they don't commit any crimes.

And, of course ICE raids are now routine, and often take place on Walmart property, persecuting minorities, even citizens, with the Homeland Security Secretary making a photo-op to show how tough she is, or bigoted; and there's also a video of masked ICE agents asking random women without cause if they were born here, often based on the color of their skin.

On top of the six people killed in accidents, which is unusually high, there were over half a dozen other major automobile accidents, including a couple where pedestrians were intentionally hit, which is lower than usual, but the most likely reason for that is inadequate reporting which has been going downhill for years. There's good reason to suspect even major crimes like shootings or deaths are no longer being reliably reported, like follow up stories on incidents that didn't previously make the news, or articles that avoid putting Walmart's name in the headline, which rarely if ever happened ten years ago, but is common now.

There were at least two more fires at their store, with one arson and the other under investigation; and in a addition to the person stabbed to death there were at least three attempted stabbings of police or security guards, one by a Walmart employee who allegedly bit the police before the police tased him.

Walmart is now spreading drone deliveries to other areas, including Georgia and they announced they will probably do this to 'most areas they operate in' but there should be some doubts about that, they're not telling the public the full truth. They're getting lots of complaints from people that don't want these drones flying over their property or are concerned about them spying on them, and one person already shot one down in Florida. While little or no concern is given to the complaints that person was prosecuted to the full extent of the law and required to pay restitution for the drone he shot down. And there have been accidents, including at least a couple incidents where drones crashed and started fires. This is another recipe for disaster, and there's little need for drone deliveries at all.

In addition to the recall that led to a death of a woman entrapped in bed rails there were at least four other major recalls, three that claim to be a risk of death including a retractable safety gate, and two for dressers that could fall on children if they're not secured to the wall and kill or seriously injure them, the fourth recall was for fruit that may cause health problems of some sort. Recalls on dressers are routine that happen several times every year; it's clear that if they wanted to implement standards to could have stopped buying or selling them in the first place years if not decades ago, yet they choose to cut corners anyway. They're also setting a timeline to remove synthetic dyes and additives without recalls, although if there's a legitimate safety concern you would think they would do it immediately.

Walmart recently bought a mall, which they want to tear down, but they're applying to have the government pay for it, instead of the seller of themselves, which will be another massive subsidy if approved.

One customer claimed they caught workers flooring the gas of his car during an oil change and says he'll never go there again; which might be just as well since there were numerous occasions where they didn't put oil in, left the drain off or caused engine damage in other ways and were initially reluctant to take responsibility for it; when that happens they often change their minds after attention is drawn by the media, in one classic case from the nineties when a car was destroyed by an employee and they denied responsibility they even threatened to sue the victim if he spoke about it, but when it was reported in the paper they had to take responsibility and admit their threat was a bluff. This story was told in the papers and in "In Sam We Trust" by Bob Ortega.

Two different men in two different states started chasing Walmart customers or employees around naked!

Does this happen anywhere but Walmart?

Is there Something In The Water?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2025. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Protesters have gathered outside the facility for weeks with the goal of shutting it down, while Broadview officials have demanded ICE stop the “unprovoked” attacks.

CHICAGO — Federal agents — with the Homeland Security secretary and a right-wing social media influencer in tow — raided an Austin Walmart on Friday. Elsewhere, they handcuffed an alderperson and lobbed tear gas onto a Logan Square street while neighbors stood nearby.

Residents in and around the Chicago area on Friday noticed a flurry of ICE activity as the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign barreled into its second month.

Walmart now plans to bring drone deliveries to ‘most areas that we operate in,’ exec says 10/01/2025

For more than half a decade, Walmart has been testing a variety of drones to assess the viability of airborne deliveries. On Tuesday, a Walmart executive said the company now believes drone deliveries are ready to become a key part of the retail giant’s operations.

Drone delivery will “be in most areas that we operate in,” Walmart senior vice president of transformation and innovation Greg Cathey said Tuesday. While Cathey did not provide a specific timeline, he made it clear that the retail giant is moving beyond small-scale tests.

“The regulatory environment is making it where this can be a viable business for us,” Cathey said onstage at the UP.Summit, in the city where Walmart is headquartered, Bentonville, Ark.

While drone delivery is only currently available at a handful of Walmart’s more than 4,600 U.S. locations—via partnerships with drone makers Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, and Zipline, a startup backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz—Cathey’s comments mark a notable transition in how major companies are treating drone delivery. Walmart is indicating it is piecing together concrete plans to scale drone delivery, which Cathey described as “really important” to the company. Complete article

Class action claims Walmart denied jobs without providing background reports 10/03/2025

A new class action lawsuit claims Walmart violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to provide a copy of a consumer report to a prospective employee before taking adverse action.

Plaintiff Cynthia Hollingsworth claims Walmart obtained a consumer report from a consumer reporting agency and relied on it to make a decision to withdraw a job offer without first providing her with a copy of the report.

Hollingsworth wants to represent a class of Walmart applicants who were the subject of a consumer report used by Walmart for employment purposes within the past five years and suffered an adverse employment action by the company. Additionally, applicants were not provided a copy of the report and/or a written summary of their rights under the FCRA before the adverse action notice. Complete article

Walmart sets a timeline for removing synthetic dyes and additives from its food brands 10/01/2025

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart said Wednesday that it plans to remove synthetic food dyes and 30 other ingredients, including some preservatives, artificial sweeteners and fat substitutes, from its store brands sold in the United States by January 2027.

The move announced by the the nation’s largest retailer amounts to an acknowledgment that American consumers and the U.S. government under President Donald Trump are paying attention to what goes into packaged foods. Walmart said its goal would affect about 1,000 products, including salty snacks, baked goods, power drinks, salad dressings and frosting.

Several of the ingredients on Walmart's removal list, however, already are banned, not widely used or have not been used in the U.S. food supply for decades. Others were included despite no known problems or have been targeted by the Trump administration for review and possible elimination as an approved food additive, according to food safety experts. Harris County family says uniformed deputy refused to help as their 5-year-old had a seizure 10/03/2025

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- An east Harris County family says a uniformed deputy refused to help and mocked them as their 5-year-old had a seizure.

"He took an oath to protect and serve, and this Sunday, he did not do his job," Evelyn Argueta said.

Argueta said her 5-year-old granddaughter, Marissa, had a seizure as the family shopped at the Walmart off of I-10 and Freeport Street Sunday afternoon.

"Her head kind of just flipped back in the basket and her eyes rolled back," she explained. .....

"The officer then told my son, 'No.' That's what you have your own phone for. Use your phone. What do you think? I can just pick up this walkie-talkie and get some help here for you?'"

With each plea, Argueta claimed that the deputy's responses grew more and more combative.

"He told me, 'I don't work for you, I work for Walmart,'" she said.

Argueta said strangers and Walmart employees jumped in to help Marissa, but the deputy did not acknowledge her.

"He failed," she said. "He sat on a chair and refused to move." Complete article

Police: Rock Hill Galleria shooting was in self-defense; alleged assailant charged 10/10/2025 (Shooting was at or near the food court on the South of the Galleria, Walmart is on the East of the Galleria and stayed open.)

ROCK HILL — Police said the Oct. 10 shooting at the Rock Hill Galleria was in self-defense and will not result in charges against the armed person.

Instead, the man police described as the aggressor, Martrell Telly Minter, 26, of Chester, was charged with assault and battery.

It was about 2 p.m. Friday when the two men became involved in an argument on the mall property, on the north side of Dave Lyle Boulevard, just east of Interstate 77. The other man shot Minter in the shoulder, police said.

Witnesses shared photos on social media of an ambulance parked outside the food court entrance to the mall on its south side. Police said Minter was in critical condition and was taken to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment.

Galleria management could not be reached for comment. The mall closed its operations after the shooting for the day, but other tenants at the property with their own entrances, such as Walmart, stayed open. Complete article

Man Takes Daytona to Walmart for an Oil Change. Then They Catch the Workers Doing This with His Car 10/08/2025

“They don’t have to worry ‘bout me comin’ back for an oil change.”

Dropping your car off for a quick oil change is supposed to be a routine task. You shouldn’t have to wonder if the shop crew is joyriding your engine behind closed doors. But that’s exactly what one Texas driver saw when he filmed Walmart oil change techs flooring his car from inside the bay.

Atlanta-area creator Zayy (@kc_zayy) clearly isn’t happy with what’s going on in the TikTok he posted, which has been viewed more than 1.3 million times. From the waiting area of the shop, you can see and hear that the engine on his Dodge Daytona is being run in the red.

That seems fairly out of line with what’s needed for a simple oil change, prompting him to note in the caption: “They don’t have to worry ‘bout me comin’ back for an oil change.”

The video quickly sparked a wave of viewer reactions, many of them outraged that Walmart employees would rev a customer’s car to that degree. “You realize them doing this is illegal?” one commenter wrote, while another joked, “Sue for what… $2 in gas?” The split in reactions reflects tension between what customers assume is proper testing and what actually happens behind the service-bay door. Walmart files application for grant money to tear down Monroeville Mall 10/07/2025 If approved this would mean neither the previous owners or Walmart would be required to pay to tear it down, instead taxpayers would subsidize it even though Walmart is making billions of dollars while cutting taxes for itself around the country.

The Monroeville Mall could soon be coming down and become a thing of the past.

Walmart purchased the mall in January through the company South Saturn Ridge LLC for a price of $34 million. The property they purchased includes the main mall building that first opened in 1969, the adjacent strip mall, and the expansion near the front entrance, and the land parcels for Best Buy and Firestone.

The company recently applied for $7.5 million in state grant funding that would be used to tear down the existing mall structures to make way for redevelopment.

In the application for the grant money, the company says the redevelopment would include new retail, restaurant, and entertainment spaces, as well as a public open space for community use. Complete article

White Walmart manager alleges DEI policy led to his termination 10/08/2025

The plaintiff invoked the Civil Rights Act of 1866, a 159-year-old piece of legislation that is gaining traction in “reverse discrimination” cases.

A former market manager at a Pennsylvania-area Walmart filed a lawsuit against the company Oct. 2, alleging he was punished and eventually terminated for complaining about the conduct of two African American senior leaders through a tip line (Robinson v. Wal-Mart Associates, Inc.).

According to the worker, the actions were indicative of racial discrimination stemming from Walmart’s DEI program, adopted around 2020, which “implicitly promoted racism and explicitly encouraged the hire, retention, and promotions of individuals based on illegal qualifications of race.”

The worker charged Walmart with violating the Civil Rights Act of 1866, a law more than 150 years old that, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibits racial discrimination in employment.

The Civil Rights Act of 1866 has emerged in recent years as a tool to oppose DEI programs on the premise of “reverse discrimination,” according to a November 2023 report from The Washington Post. The law has been cited in such lawsuits against Morgan Stanley, Amazon and Pfizer, among others, according to the Post. Complete article

Target and Walmart fight new shoplifting, retail theft staffing law 10/14/2025

Retail theft has been growing, and retailers have been hesitant to take the steps needed to — if not stop it — at least reduce it.

Large retailers including Target and Walmart have used self-checkout as a way to spend less on labor. They may claim that's not the reason and say that staff have been reassigned elsewhere, but there are fewer workers in the checkout area.

Fewer workers means fewer people watching whether people steal. This opens the door for customers to steal from self-checkout because they might honestly miss an item when scanning.

That offers consumers plausible deniability. It's a situation that can be fixed with more staff members, and one city isn't giving companies a choice.

Walmart deploys millions of new sensors in retail’s first large-scale deployment of IoT tech 10/15/2025

Walmart is deploying millions of ambient Internet of Things battery-free sensors throughout its massive supply chain in the U.S.

The retail giant is using technology from Wiliot in what the IoT vendor is calling the first large-scale deployment of ambient IoT in the retail sector and one of the largest such implementations to date.

Ambient IoT is a class of IoT devices mainly powered by harvesting ambient energy from radio waves, light, motion, heat, or other viable ambient energy sources. It’s an evolution of legacy IoT and radio frequency identification technologies that promise lower costs and high scalability.

Walmart will be using the IoT sensors to track pallets nationwide by the end of 2026. “Expansion to other global markets is under consideration, but the immediate focus is the U.S. rollout,” Cathey said.

The company will now have real-time insights into inventory management, knowing exactly where merchandise is located and whether it’s owned by the retailer, at any moment, and covering an estimated 90 million pallets of inventory when at full scale. Complete article

Walmart teams up with OpenAI to allow purchases directly in ChatGPT 10/14/2025

Walmart said Tuesday it has struck a deal with OpenAI to allow shoppers to make faster purchases directly through artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

With the move, the retail giant and largest U.S. grocer is trying to keep up with changes in how consumers discover items to buy. Along with purchasing items they see on social media or products recommended by retailers, shoppers are increasingly going to ChatGPT or similar AI chatbots for gift ideas or help finding the best deals.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a news release. “That is about to change.”

He said the AI feature will be “multi-media, personalized and contextual,” adding that Walmart is “running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future.”

The company did not say when shoppers would be able to start buying Walmart items on ChatGPT. Complete article

Walmart halts job offers for applicants who need H-1B visas after Trump raises fees to $100,000 10/22/2025

Walmart, America’s largest private-sector employer, is pausing job offers to foreign candidates needing H-1B visas to work in the United States, a company spokesperson told CNN. It’s a significant shift that demonstrates how major companies are changing their policies in response to Trump’s strict immigration agenda that could have major ramifications for U.S. businesses and high-skilled workers from overseas.

Walmart’s policy change, which was first reported by Bloomberg, comes after President Donald Trump announced a $100,000 fee on the visas designed for high-skilled positions that companies struggle to fill.

The H-1B is a work visa that’s valid for three years and can be renewed for another three years. Economists have argued the program allows U.S. companies to maintain competitiveness and grow their business, creating more jobs in the U.S.

Major tech companies are the largest users of the program. Walmart, which has a significant and rapidly growing online marketplace that competes with Amazon, currently employs more than 2,000 H-1B visa holders, according to government data. Complete article

Man accused of intentionally hitting pedestrians in NY Walmart parking lot 10/23/2025

Wilton, NY (WRGB) — New York State Police arrested 34-year-old Timothy Besaw from Gansevoort after police say he intentionally hit two Walmart employees with his vehicle outside a Walmart in Wilton following a shoplifting attempt.

Troopers responded to the Walmart around 11:10 PM on October 16 for reports of a disturbance. Investigators say Besaw was stopped by an employee while allegedly attempting to leave the store with unpaid merchandise. Although the items were recovered, Besaw allegedly left wearing other merchandise he hadn’t paid for and stayed in the parking lot, where he got into a verbal altercation with an employee.

Walmart Just Fired A Big AI Shot Across Amazon’s Bow 10/26/2025

Walmart announced that its teaming up with OpenAI to enable shopping directly through ChatGPT. Starting this fall, according to Bloomberg, ChatGPT users will be able to shop nearly all of Walmart’s assortment, i.e. apparel, entertainment, packaged food, and even products from third-party sellers (the lone exception being fresh food), directly through a "buy" button without ever leaving the chat interface. Even one’s Walmart or Sam’s Club account will get automatically linked.

It’s an idea that is seamless, convenient, and potentially great for consumers. It’s also one that is a direct assault on Amazon’s e-commerce dominance.
