The government and media, of course, constantly tell us that the police are here to protect us; and people that live in middle class or wealthy communities and get all their news from traditional media may be inclined to believe this, based on what they experience or see in the media; and many police departments in these communities may not be violent at all, nor are young people that want to become police officers likely to plan on killing or shaking down people for a living. However, people living in lower income areas, especially if they're minorities are much more likely to realize that police don't protect everyone equally, especially if they get news from alternative media, which does a much better job covering police corruption or killings than any media did twenty or thirty years ago. Even some police in middle class or wealthy communities are more corrupt or violent than many people realize, as some of the news reports cited below or in previous articles will show.
It's also important to keep in mind that the United States has more than two or three times as much violent crime as most other wealthy countries, and they also have much fewer people killed by police than other countries. According to Wikipedia: Killings by law enforcement. Rates and counts by country police kill 33.1 people for every ten million people in the country, with all wealthy countries killing at a much lower rate; even Mexico, which isn't nearly as wealthy and is much more dysfunctional, kills fewer people with a rate of only 30 and Canada is the worst wealthy country except for the United States with a rate of either 18.6 according to Wikipedia or 9.8 according to The Prison Policy Initiative, which may be more reliable, Australia is only 6.5, or 8.5 according to The PPI, and European countries are all much lower with rates no higher than 5.5, except for Luxembourg, which is very small and still lower than Canada, although Ukraine and Russia aren't listed on this article, but they have much more violence than the rest of Europe and very dysfunctional governments.
Not just “a few bad apples”: U.S. police kill civilians at much higher rates than other countries 06/05/2020
Why are other wealthy countries so much less violent? We've had good research showing what they do better to reduce violence for at least forty years, and that research is constantly improving as I pointed out in numerous articles including We're Using Children For Research, Without Accepting The Benefits! which shows that we've had research showing how to solve many of our social problems, including ways to reduce all forms of violence decades ago, that good academics have testified before Congress and advised them on this, and their recommendations were simply ignored, and the media never covered the best research. This sounds insane and unbelievable, but the evidence to support this conclusion is available in libraries, academic journals and alternative media, but not traditional media, and other countries have demonstrated with their actions that they can solve these problems, and they don't have nearly as much violence, murder or police killing citizens. This shows that even though we obviously need major police reform, we also need to solve the long term causes of crime as well, and as bad as the worst police are, the politicians and media spokespeople and executives are as bad if not worse.
Previously I wrote several articles about police violence, the most comprehensive were A Brief History of Cops Convicted of Murder and History of Cops Convicted of Murder Follow Up which showed that it was almost guaranteed that police are as likely if not more likely to commit murder than the majority of the public, although it wasn't a peer reviewed study, but it did show an enormous list of murders by police, often in their personal lives. If anything the evidence has grown supporting this conclusion, although it's still not considered a peer reviewed study, by traditional academics. These two previous articles cited peer reviewed studies showing that police were significantly more likely to commit domestic violence at home, or commit suicide and there was an enormous list of articles of police wrong doing, often including murder.
There was no statistically peer reviewed study showing that police were more likely to commit murder/suicide; however, I found enough murder/suicides by police to virtually prove that is the case, even if it wasn't peer reviewed by academics. In many cases they involved crimes that ordinary people could not commit, since they weren't in the same positions as police, like stealing a large amount of money from drug dealers, and letting them go, colluding with crime organizations, framing people for crimes they didn't commit, and even planting guns to make murders seem justifiable.
For decades no one even kept track of how often police killed people; this changed about 2013 when several people or organizations began documenting it, and it continued since then, although there were several researchers compiling this data voluntarily that could no longer put their time into it, and others picked up the task, with the latest researchers updating them about seven or eight weeks after events happen. There's no long term financing for this research that I know of, but we now have over ten years of reasonably complete data. The clear indication is that they kill over a thousand people every year, sometimes close to, if not more than twelve hundred people. Last year researchers reported that More officers were charged in fatal police shootings in 2021. Not everyone sees progress. 01/22/2022 this article says "In 2021, 21 police officers in the United States were charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from an on-duty shooting, the highest in a single year, according to a database by Bowling Green State University criminal justice professor Philip Stinson that started tracking such incidents in 2005. His data focuses solely on police shooting deaths and relies initially on media reports." one of the sources for this article is "Mapping Police Violence" and there current database shows the conclusions from this article is incomplete or out of date, with thirty-one police officers charge with a crime related to those killings, two more that were given a "ticket," but not charged with a more serious crime, and another five police officers charged with a crime only to have those charges dropped; one of those thirty-one was only charged with assault, eleven more didn't specify what crime they were charged with, although looking up each case may show more, most of the rest were charged with some form of murder, but all but two were lower counts like manslaughter, and only a couple were resolved, with lesser crimes. And 2022 may be as bad, with about twenty-nine officers charged with a crime; however, when it comes to charging police officers they're often slow to press charges, and that number could rise, or some of the charges could be dropped. However, this may now be enough evidence to show that police are statistically more likely to be charged with murder, or a related charge to a killing, than the average person, but, in fairness, there are a few things that should be taken into consideration, including the fact that most of us wouldn't be involved in the extreme positions that police are involved in.
However, there's no doubt that police kill far more people than the general public, based on FBI reports there were typically about 16,000 murders a year, before a sudden surge in 2020 that was attributed to the pandemic, which means that police kill about six or seven percent of the people murdered every year, although the vast majority of people killed by police are considered justifiable. However, the police only account for about 1/4 of one percent of the public according to Wikipedia: Law enforcement in the United States which says "There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States." This comes to about a quarter of one percent of the population, yet they kill six percent of the people murdered, that we know of; however, almost half of US murders are going unsolved, so the total number of people killed each year where they know who the alleged killer is is only about nine thousand, and over one thousand are killed by police, even if you only count police charged for murder, this is now more than their percentage of the population. A quarter of one percent of the murders that are solved comes to about 22.5, and for two years in a row more than that have been charged with a crime, although it remains to be seen whether most of those will result in convictions. It would be unreasonable to use the total number of murders for comparison, since we have no way of knowing how many police might be responsible for some of them. Since it's the police responsible for investigating murder, is it possible that they might be reluctant to investigate thoroughly if it might implicate other police, or in some cases, perhaps, the same police doing the investigating? There's no way of knowing, but we shouldn't rule out the possibility that they might get away with murder more often because they're the ones investigating it, and they might even be responsible for more of the unsolved murders, percentage-wise, than the solved ones.
It's unlikely that the number of police violating the law when killing people has surged in the past couple years; instead it's far more likely that due to political pressure they're more likely to be prosecuted. There are numerous articles including several below, one of which is highlighted, that show why they're not prosecuted, and that it often has far more to do with political power than lack of guilt. Even the police that killed Breonna Taylor were never charged, and the one firing the most shots was hired by another police department. It's also quite common for police who killed people to have a long record of complaints from before, including many where they killed one or more people previously, yet they continue working as police officers in most cases. In 2021 there were twenty-three people killed by police when they were off-duty, which is the average you might expect for their share of the population, and this surged to forty in 2022, which is much more, and some of these are domestic violence or related to other crimes that they might have committed, although most of them aren't prosecuted either.
In 2022 about 212 out of the more than 1,200 people killed by police weren't armed at all, and about 255 more were only armed with weapons like knives that are only lethal up close, and unlikely to be a serious threat to police armed with guns, especially if there's more than one officer, which is usually the case. There were about a dozen of the "unarmed" people and perhaps a couple dozen of the "armed" people where they mentioned a possible air-gun, although it's unclear without checking a sampling of them, at least why some of these were labeled "armed" and others "unarmed," and there were also many of the unarmed people that mentioned harmless items like phones or flashlights, which presumably the police claimed they thought they were guns or other weapons. Of course there are more details to each case, but with these high numbers it's hard to believe that many of these killings could have been avoided if police were better trained and they weren't so quick to shoot. Even if some people think they were justified, it should raise the question why there are so many people acting in so violent a manner that they have to be killed by police; and as I said in many other articles we have the research showing how to solve this problem, usually by teaching about how child abuse leads to escalating violence, improving education and child care, providing more economic opportunities reducing the rigged economy, and addressing other root causes of violence, all that is explained by the good research the media and political establishment ignore.
And, of course even traditional media occasionally acknowledges how hard it is to hold police accountable when they're obviously responsible for murder or other serious crimes, although they keep discussion of this to a minimum, and often only post it in relatively low profile articles, like the following:

Experts say that, alone, is indicative of how difficult it is to thoroughly investigate officers for using force in the line of duty.
Successfully prosecuting officers accused of killing someone on the job is often an uphill battle for prosecutors. Everything and everyone ― from the U.S. Constitution to trial jurors ― are inherently deferential to the authority of police officers to use fatal or nonfatal force on citizens, experts say.
"Police are different from you and I in terms of their ability to use force. We can use force to defend ourselves, but that's it," said David Harris, a policing expert and law professor at the University of Pittsburgh. "Police have the right, and some even say duty in some circumstances, to use force to effectuate their lawful duties. For them, it's not usually a question of whether to use force; it's a question of how much."

This is one of perhaps dozens if not hundreds of low profile articles admitting how hard it is to hold police accountable, but they don't get nearly as much attention as the propaganda making it seem like police are protecting us, even though, as other research of different subjects show which I covered in other articles, investment in education, child care, reduction in poverty, income inequality, economic opportunities, and solving other social problems does far more to prevent violence or crime than police that respond to crime after it happens. And even though there are few statistical studies, there's plenty of evidence to show there are more problem with violent or corrupt police in abandoned inner cities or other locations where violence is already a bigger problem, which I covered in previous articles about the subject, but there are some cases where even in less violent communities that are still corrupt or violent police.
One of the few academic studies about the subject that came out about seven years ago, Police Integrity Lost: A Study of Law Enforcement Officers Arrested April 2016, starts by saying, "There are no comprehensive statistics available on problems with police integrity, and no government entity collects data on all criminal arrests of law enforcement officers in the United States." Why wouldn't there be many, if any, academic studies on the subject before this? The most likely reason for so few studies is that tehy already have enough information to show there's a serious problem which would implicate people with political power, and like any other research, including environmental destruction, violence from veterans when they return, crime related in insurance fraud, including murder for life insurance, and other problems in society, where it may show that a rigged economy or the practices of the rich are a major contributing factor; and in this case, they also use police to control the poor and victims of a rigged economy.
This study goes on to say, "The findings indicate that non-federal law enforcement officers were arrested nationwide during 2005-2011 at a rate of 0.72 officers arrested per 1,000 officers, and at a rate of 1.7 officers arrested per 100,000 population nationwide." This may not be statistically worse than the rest of the population; however, it's based on a study of when police are arrested and charged, yet there's an enormous amount of evidence showing that the police are only charged for a fraction of the crimes they commit. This study probably has more to say, but it's 670 pages long, and so far I've only skimmed a small portion of it; however, I, and and many other people or organizations, have checked an enormous amount of raw data about police misconduct, and there's no doubt that there's an enormous amount of it going on and police routinely cover it up, often holding other police accountable when their activities become public; and there are many examples where violent police are finally charged with crimes, and their records are made public showing a long list of problems, including framing innocent people, and more killings, some that were labeled "justified."
Over the decades there have been dozens if not hundreds or even thousands of police departments that have been exposed for epidemic levels of corruption, and most of these have been followed up by efforts to reform these police departments showing they're solving their problems, or so it seems; however, many of the same police departments get caught over and over again with massive corruption problems, clearly showing previous reforms were, at best, incomplete, if not total fabrications for public relations purposes. However, despite my doubts, I suspect, and hope, that, on average, most police departments aren't nearly as bad as they used to be, but many of them still have major problems. As I said, most of the worst police departments are in the most violent areas in the country, including abandoned inner cities, and the South, or a large portion of the Bible Belt; but there are exceptions, including the case of Auburn Wash. Officer Jeff Nelson charged with murder three years ago for an incident that happened a year before that, but he still remains free, and is on paid administrative leave, despite a long history of violence that has since been made public, while awaiting trial. And another police officer from Auburn was caught on tape with him abusing a suspect and lying about him, possibly framing him, even though he did nothing wrong, was promoted within a year after the incident in 2014, and remains in a leadership position, even though his participation in crimes was exposed in the media about nine months ago, at the latest, presumably there must have been people that knew about it much sooner, possibly before he was promoted in 2015.
The incident Nelson has been charged with happened in 2019 when allegedly the Suspect reached for officer's gun, witness says in deadly police shooting 06/01/2019; however when you read the full article that witness, Steve Woodard, says, “The dude fell on the ground and that’s when the officer pulled out his pistol, shot him once, looked at me, and then looked at him again and shot him in the head,” and the witness 'felt the second shot wasn’t necessary,' and perhaps, if the suspect fell on the ground, even the first shot might not have been necessary, however, initially the police backed him up and waited a year before filing charges, by this time more of his history may have been made public.
A more recent article, Trial for Auburn cop accused of killing 26-year-old Jesse Sarey delayed again 03/31/2023, explains that it's almost impossible to prosecute police for murder, or many other charges, and that anyone else would have been tried long ago and that without "Initiative 940" which was passed in 2018, requiring police to provide first aid in a case like this and an investigation into it, which in this case showed a long history of abuse and at least three other killings, and wasn't charged criminally, but the town paid out massive civil settlements for them, another incident where he ran over a man with a patrol car, and a lawsuit is still pending on this, even though it happened before the 2019 incident. I'm unaware of the details of the third fatal shootings, but it was mentioned in an article without complete details. If he had been held accountable for the incidents before this shooting he probably wouldn't have been a police officer and the shooting never would have happened. Nelson has extensive tattoos on his torso, back, legs and arms that prosecutors have argued might offer evidence to “prove his state of mind and the reasonableness of his actions as a police officer” when he shot Sarey, according to court filings.

Nelson later said in a written statement that he believed Sarey had a knife and posed a threat before firing the first shot — and that Sarey was on his knees in a “squatting fashion … ready to spring forward” before he fired again. ....
Nelson has been involved in three fatal shootings and dozens of other uses of significant force during arrests, according to court records.
Auburn has already paid $4 million to settle a claim filed by Sarey’s family and $1.25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the brother of Isaiah Obet, who Nelson shot and killed in a downtown Auburn intersection in 2017.
In 2011, Nelson shot and killed Brian Scaman, who “reportedly taunted him with a knife during a traffic stop,” according to court documents. When Scaman refused to drop the knife, Nelson shot him.
Joseph Loren Allen — a convicted drug dealer Nelson ran down with his patrol car during an arrest — also sued the city in federal court last year.
Both of Allen’s ankles were broken during the 2018 incident, which also dislocated his shoulder. The lawsuit remains pending. Complete article

This article shows he had a long history of violence, and almost certainly should have been fired or charged criminally for previous crimes, and there's more evidence to support this conclusion in other articles that came out before this one, but after the shooting, although many of these details should ahve been known by his supervisors long before the 2019 shooting, including one case where he filed a report making false claims without realizing he was being filmed, and the video and audio recordings contradicted his claims. The 2019 shooting was also videoed according to the article above, but they didn't specify wether it supports his claims or not, although the jury should be able to judge for themselves either way. Auburn officer charged with murder has history of using force, be it dog, fist or gun 08/21/2020
Records filed in federal court by attorneys for a man who was run down and seriously injured by an Auburn police officer in 2018 show the officer used force dozens of times during arrests in addition to killing three people during his 12-year career. .....
While Allen pleaded guilty before the judge made that decision, Hamoudi was able to obtain more than 440 pages of personnel and discipline files for Nelson, and created an eight-page list detailing 65 incidents from 2011 through 2018 where Nelson used force during arrests, often for nonviolent misdemeanors or other minor crimes, or was offered up for discipline. Records for Nelson’s first three years at the department were not provided, according to the document.
Many of the incidents involve dog bites, since Nelson worked as a K-9 officer. Others involved his frequent use of lateral vascular neck restraints, a hold that restricts blood flow to the brain, causing unconsciousness; however the list indicates Nelson has also used a Taser, his fists, his feet and resorted to shooting.
Among the incidents cited in the court documents:
On June 17, 2014, Nelson body-slammed a suspect, bruising the person’s face and injuring the suspect’s shoulder, during the execution of a misdemeanor arrest warrant. The Fire Department was called to administer medical treatment.
On June 19, 2014, Nelson and another officer broke multiple bones in a suspect’s face. The suspect was wanted on a nonviolent felony arrest warrant, and was hospitalized after he resisted arrest and attempted to fight off both officers.
On July 9, 2014, Nelson and another officer stopped a jaywalker, who cursed at them as they tried to cite him. Unaware that he was being videotaped, Nelson said to his fellow officer, “Are you ready to [expletive] this guy up?” The documents say Nelson then deployed his Taser and used a neck restraint until the person lost consciousness, requiring the Fire Department and paramedics to respond. Nelson was disciplined for this incident.
“In short, the records show that Nelson has a penchant toward violence and that the Auburn Police Department has been aware of it for some time,” Hamoudi wrote in a sentencing memorandum for Allen, who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 84 months in prison.
“The sheer number of instances involving violence is so high that it undermines Nelson’s credibility when he claims that he was acting reasonably when he attempted to kill Allen” by running him down, the memo says.
The city of Auburn declined to comment, except for a posting on its Facebook page expressing “our sympathy to the Sarey family and the community.” .....

Records filed in federal court by attorneys for a man who was run down and seriously injured by an Auburn police officer in 2018 show the officer used force dozens of times during arrests in addition to killing three people during his 12-year career. .....
While Allen pleaded guilty before the judge made that decision, Hamoudi was able to obtain more than 440 pages of personnel and discipline files for Nelson, and created an eight-page list detailing 65 incidents from 2011 through 2018 where Nelson used force during arrests, often for nonviolent misdemeanors or other minor crimes, or was offered up for discipline. Records for Nelson’s first three years at the department were not provided, according to the document.
Many of the incidents involve dog bites, since Nelson worked as a K-9 officer. Others involved his frequent use of lateral vascular neck restraints, a hold that restricts blood flow to the brain, causing unconsciousness; however the list indicates Nelson has also used a Taser, his fists, his feet and resorted to shooting.
Among the incidents cited in the court documents:
On June 17, 2014, Nelson body-slammed a suspect, bruising the person’s face and injuring the suspect’s shoulder, during the execution of a misdemeanor arrest warrant. The Fire Department was called to administer medical treatment.
On June 19, 2014, Nelson and another officer broke multiple bones in a suspect’s face. The suspect was wanted on a nonviolent felony arrest warrant, and was hospitalized after he resisted arrest and attempted to fight off both officers.
On July 9, 2014, Nelson and another officer stopped a jaywalker, who cursed at them as they tried to cite him. Unaware that he was being videotaped, Nelson said to his fellow officer, “Are you ready to [expletive] this guy up?” The documents say Nelson then deployed his Taser and used a neck restraint until the person lost consciousness, requiring the Fire Department and paramedics to respond. Nelson was disciplined for this incident.
“In short, the records show that Nelson has a penchant toward violence and that the Auburn Police Department has been aware of it for some time,” Hamoudi wrote in a sentencing memorandum for Allen, who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 84 months in prison.
“The sheer number of instances involving violence is so high that it undermines Nelson’s credibility when he claims that he was acting reasonably when he attempted to kill Allen” by running him down, the memo says.
The city of Auburn declined to comment, except for a posting on its Facebook page expressing “our sympathy to the Sarey family and the community.” .....

Once again, this shows that Nelson said he thought the suspect was armed with a knife or tried to grab his gun, but when he fired the first shot he had control of his gun, he had a history of lying and being exposed by a video which contradicted his statements; as the previous article says, this was on video, but the media hasn't reported on whether this confirms Nelson's claims or contradicts them, like at least one previous incident. This incident is the one mentioned above that took place on July 9, 2014, and also implicates another police officer, Cristian Adams, who was promoted a year after this, and is still in a leadership position as of the end of April 2023, even though the following article, which provides more details of their crimes, was published nine months ago:

Further, Larson said in the cases the prosecution wants to be included as evidence, the people who Nelson assaulted posed little to no threat to the safety of the public or other officers. However, when Nelson wrote reports on his use of force, Larson claims Nelson greatly exaggerated the threat each individual posed in order to justify his extreme use of force.
Larson called to the stand Jon Winterhawk, who was brutalized by Nelson on July 9, 2014, when Winterhawk and his two friends were walking to Winterhawk’s home from a local store. Winterhawk said he and one friend were on the sidewalk and his third friend was walking in the bike lane.
Nelson pulled up on the three men and began questioning them, asking what they were doing, where they were going and other similar questions, Winterhawk recalled. Winterhawk and his friends told Nelson they didn’t want to talk to him, and that Winterhawk said he felt he wasn’t doing anything wrong or illegal by telling Nelson he didn’t want to talk.
Moments later, officer Cristian Adams, who has since been promoted to the rank of commander, pulled his patrol car up to Nelson’s patrol car. Adams’s in-car video camera recorded video and audio of the interaction between the two officers and Winterhawk and his friends.
Larson said neither of the officers knew they were being recorded during their interaction.
Adams and Nelson continue to follow Winterhawk and his friends as the trio crossed the street and walked toward Winterhawk’s house. Winterhawk told the court he remembered telling the officers “have a good night” several times to indicate he didn’t want to engage with the officers and simply wanted to go home.
While the officers followed the three men, they can be heard on the recording shouting obscene and threatening language at them.
“I’ll turn you into a fucking punk if you want to run your mouth,” Adams said to the men, according to the recording.
“Fuck you motherfuckers, look at you run away,” Nelson said, according to the recording.
Winterhawk said that he believed the two officers were trying to get him and his friends to fight the officers, which Winterhawk said they had no intention of doing.
At some point, Nelson asked Adams, “Want to fuck them up?” To which Adams replied: “We might as well.”
Nelson then ordered Winterhawk, who had committed no crime, to get on the ground, before shooting Winterhawk with his Taser. Winterhawk said he remembers falling face down to the ground and hitting his head as the result of getting shocked with the Taser.
After that, Nelson put his knee on Winterhawk’s back and wrapped his arm around Winterhawk’s neck, choking him until he lost consciousness. When he regained consciousness, Winterhawk was in handcuffs.
Larson said that Nelson, who wrote up a report without knowing he had been recorded, greatly exaggerated the threat Winterhawk posed. In his report, Nelson claimed Winterhawk had his fists clenched and was in a “fighting stance,” moments before Nelson used the Taser on him. He also claimed Winterhawk could have had a weapon on him simply because he was wearing baggy clothing.
“When you hear the transcript, and you hear the testimony of Jon Winterhawk, there is no conclusion you can reasonably reach other than the police report was inaccurate,” Larson said. “The question is, is this a manifestation of a scheme or plan of Nelson’s police work for those who disobey him?”
The next case Larson discussed involved Nelson allowing his K9, Koen, to attack a 15-year-old boy who had allegedly been the passenger of a stolen car in May 2018. Several officers had stopped the car, and the three boys fled into the woods next to the road, but two were quickly apprehended.
Eventually, a different Auburn police officer found the 15-year-old boy in the woods and ordered him to get on the ground, and the boy immediately complied and laid on the ground, Larson said.
Nelson’s K9 was off-leash and attacked the child for about 15 seconds, Larson said. In an audio-video recording Larson played for the court, the boy can be heard crying and screaming in agony as Koen rips apart the flesh on the boy’s arms and back.
Eventually, Nelson got his K9 to stop attacking the boy, at which point Nelson can be seen high-fiving the other officers and saying “woohoo,” in an apparent celebration of the dog attack on the child, Larson said.
Shortly after that, Nelson can be heard saying “time to be a big boy and learn to fucking walk,” as the child is still crying out in pain. Larson questioned under what circumstances would it be acceptable for a police officer to celebrate a vicious attack on a child. Complete article

This article goes on to say this evidence will be entered for pretrial purposes, and the judge will decide later whether it's allowed in the trial, and the same could go for much more evidence, including previous testimony about his tattoos. Whether he's found guilty or not might depend on whether or not they allow his incredibly long record of violence to be used against him; and we should also be wondering why they're not adding on many more charges for his past activities, including the incident that Officer Cristian Adams was involved in, who should also be charged with a crime for that incident. But not only is he not being charged, but he's still near the top of their "Leadership Team," according to Auburn Police Leadership Team: Officer Cristian Adams is listed fourth. Even though there's no guarantee that Jeffrey Nelson will be held accountable the town has already paid out a fortune in lawsuits, and more suits to come which the taxpayers will be forced to pay, while many police officers remain unaccountable.
A mre recent article says Auburn has now paid nearly $6M to settle suits against cop charged with murder 12/16/2022 "The city of Auburn has agreed to pay $450,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a convicted and incarcerated drug dealer who was run down and seriously injured by a police officer now facing murder charges for one of three people he killed in the line of duty. The payment to Loren Joseph Allen, who is serving a seven-year federal drug- and gun-related prison sentence, brings to $5.7 million the amount the city has paid to settle claims alleging Officer Jeff Nelson used excessive force during his 12-year career as an Auburn K-9 and patrol officer." And, as previous articles show there are more lawsuits regarding Nelson that are still in the courts, and at least one other for another police officer implicated in a hit and run which is also still pending according to Auburn police officer given written reprimand for hit and run 02/17/2022 which says "Man hit by SWAT vehicle has filed suit against the city. Auburn police internal investigation records show officer Kenneth Lyman was punished with a written reprimand for crashing a SWAT vehicle into Peter Manning’s work truck in 2020, then fleeing the scene." This means that they have at least two police officers on the force that almost certainly should have been fired and charged with crimes, and Jeffrey Nelson is still on "paid administrative leave" while he awaits trial and there's really no doubt that no ordinary citizen could ever get away with any of these crimes, or drag the trial out like this on the one occasion that they're actually tried.

“Protect the innocent,” is tattooed vertically on Nelson’s right calf, with “punish the deserving” in a larger font wrapped around his right ankle. A tattoo on his left ankle reads “memento mori,” which is a Latin phrase that roughly means “remember you have to die.”
There are hundreds more police implicated in crimes across the country that the government is slow to hold accountable, assuming they're charged at all, as previous articles, and the long list of stories below show, and many of these police departments are almost as corrupt as this one, if not much more corrupt; as I said, in most cases the most corrupt police departments are in the most violent cities, and compared to Auburn, the vast majority of them are much more violent. Auburn has about the same average murder rate as the rest of the country, which over a fourteen year period is about 5 per 100,000, while many of the most corrupt police departments are in cities with twice the national murder rates, with about 125 or so cities falling into that category, although I don't have research on how corrupt most of them are. As I've said, the biggest and most corrupt police departments have routinely been exposed for their corruption and supposedly reformed to clean it up before getting caught with massive amounts of corruption again. This continues to this day, and there's no doubt there are many more violent police officers as bad if not worse than Jeffrey Nelson around the country.
About four years ago "The Plain View Project" posted Spotlight: In A Study of Cops’ Facebook Accounts, 1 in 5 Had Posted Racist, Violent Content 06/03/2019 this was reported on and peer reviewed by numerous traditional media outlets, with articles listed below showing a large amount of unethical behavior on Social Media for numerous police departments, including Philadelphia, which implicated at least 72 of their officers, but only 13 of those 72 were put on administrative leave, and there's no guarantee they'll be fired, showing little action is being take. The Oklahoma governor called for resignations after county officials reportedly discussed killing journalists, hanging Black people 04/17/2023; there have been numerous stories about 45 Antioch Ca. Police Officers Accused of Sending Racist Texts Messages: Public Defender 04/14/2023; and one good investigative reporter did a fifteen part story about A Tradition of Violence The History of Deputy Gangs in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department 2021, which was also peer reviewed by many traditional media outlets. This seems to be a pattern of behavior, there are few good research efforts into police violence, and the best ones are not from traditional media, which almost certainly has much more funding than smaller research outlets, yet the quality of these studies is often confirmed by other sources.
And, even though police in the most violent communities tend to be more violent and corrupt in the least violent, there are more exception of police paranoia or incompetence, including a now famous case in relatively non-violent Adams County Ohio where Afroman Got Raided by Cops, So He Put Them in His Music Video 01/06/2023 This isn't nearly as bad as many of the cases where police are killing over a thousand people around the country every year, but it could have been if something had gone wrong. The short version of this, if you haven't heard it already, is that the police claimed they had evidence of drugs and kidnapping to get a warrant to search Joseph Edgar Foreman, aka Afroman's house, and broke into it,damaging his gate and front door, while he was gone, with guns drawn like a military style raid in a war zone, and they found nothing of any significance, and didn't press charges. They didn't apologize, pay for the damage they did, or offer any explanation; but after Afroman turned it into a hilarious music video they sued him, as if they were the victims; which is very ironic, since there must have been ten times more people, including me, that watched the videos after this lawsuit, which almost certainly has no merit.
Many people may not consider my first two articles, or this one, with an enormous list of additional media articles about police murders or other forms of corruption, to be a peer reviewed study, but with one story after another, and such an enormous list of violent or corrupt police, it adds an enormous amount of evidence to show that police violence is a serious problem, and, as my other articles show, addressing the long term causes of violence by providing education, child care, preventing child abuse, fair economic opportunities and an economic system that isn't rigged heavily in favor of the rich is as important as police reform.
If "protecting and serving" the public really was the objective, that should have been obvious all along; however, if wealthy elites and police are far more concerned with controlling the poor or middle class than serving their best interests, then this corrupt system makes much more sense.

According to the indictment, the charge involves an October 2021 incident on West Mulberry Street during which Wilson was on duty, investigating a call for a deceased person.
