Once again we had almost as much violence including murder during the holidays, if not more, even though statistically the cold winter months are less violent than the warmer summer months, and the majority of this is domestic violence. But as I reported previously in Tis' the season for Domestic Violence? murders? the media rarely pays any attention to this, and when they do they provide virtually no research about the leading causes of violence and how to prevent it. Other wealthy countries, have proven repeatedly they know how to do a far better job addressing the long term causes of violence and they have murder rates that are a fraction of ours. In 1985, the year I used for a statistical sample there were an average of 44.4 murders per day, but in four out of five holidays that I searched for, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day 2019, I was able to find more than that, especially on New Years Eve, which had 5 murders, and this is a minimum, since it's unlikely that I would have found all of them through Google. Christmas Day was the only one where I didn't find as many as average with only 38.
We don't have complete statistics for 2021 yet, but there was supposed to be a massive unprecedented surge of murders in 2020 and many cities indicated it went even higher in 2021, presumably as a result of the pandemic or other related events. This would mean an average of about 57; an English newspaper reported there were at least 42 in SEASON OF VIOLENCE At least 42 people shot dead over Christmas weekend including boy, 12, as holiday shootings erupt across the US 12/27/2021 but this was over three days and there are almost certainly at least three or four times as many, including many listed below. If my own search for Christmas is as thorough as my last one it is higher, but probably not as much higher as the surge for the full year. Christmas Eve, which was only slightly higher than average in 2018 only inched up by a couple this year that I found, but Christmas Day, which was the only below average in 2018 surged by over 30%; part of the reason might be that it was lower than usual in 2018, but the average of the two was below the surge, and searches for Thanksgiving and New Years weren't thorough enough to compare.
There must have been at least a dozen or more double or triple murders during the holidays, but few quite as dramatic as a few of past high profile murders including Covina massacre on Christmas Eve 2008 killing ten people including the perpetrator; Palm Sunday massacre (homicide) and The Easter Sunday Massacre in 1975 killing eleven; or the Murders of Joel and Lisa Guy by their son Joel Michael Guy Jr. a few days after Thanksgiving in 2016, which was unusually gruesome even if it wasn't a mass murder. However there were at least three mass murders on or near the holidays including the Oxford High School shooting which killed four and injured seven more five days after Thanksgiving with a gun bought on Good Friday, the day after Thanksgiving; 7 shot, 4 dead in shootout at New Year’s Eve party in Gulfport Mississippi 01/02/2022 and Five dead, three injured after mass shooting in Denver and Lakewood Colorado 12/28/2021 Two days after Christmas, suspect, Lyndon James McLeod, among the dead. There were only thirty one mass murders killing at least four people last year according to List of mass shootings in the United States in 2021 and another two of them took place during Labor Day weekend, so the holidays had more than their share of mass murders. There was also a mass murder of three the day after Christmas and another the day after Thanksgiving, so if you lower the bar to three killed it doesn't get much better.
The incredibly incompetent media coverage of the Joel Michael Guy Jr. murder of his parents is, unfortunately all to common by both the media and the courts, both of whom seemed far more concerned with seeking maximum punishment than they are trying to figure out what the causes are of violence so they can prevent it and reduce murder and many other domestic problems, like many other wealthy countries with much lower murder rates. There has been an enormous amount of media coverage making this seem almost as horrifying and inexplicable as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with no coverage of good researchers that have been looking into the background of mass murders or other disturbed individuals, that would know what kind of background, including early child abuse to look for. Not only did Joel Michael Guy Jr. murder both his parents but he also cut their bodies into pieces and attempted to dissolve them in acid, perhaps in an effort to dispose of the remains. There has been little or no discussion of possible insanity, yet no sane person would ever do this. Nor is there any evidence that he was abused as a child, at least in the mainstream media; however, there's also no indication that any one even looked for evidence of early abuse that might have contributed to this insane behavior.
There are numerous good researchers including Dorothy Otnow Lewis, James Garbarino, and Lonnie Atkins that have indicated that almost all, if not all violent murderers have suffered serious child abuse that taught them to be violent. Dorothy Otnow Lewis went so far as to say that every single one of the violent criminals that she personally investigated she found evidence of abuse and this was almost always if not always backed up by unbiased sources, often including hospital reports or police investigations. If James Garbarino didn't go quite so far he came close. No one want to blame the victim in a gruesome crime like this, including me, but if children are raised in a safe and healthy environment they simply don't grow up to commit gruesome crimes like this, especially against their own parents.
The prosecutors claim that the motive for this was to collect insurance, and I don't rule this out as a contributing factor. But, I've looked into a lot of other attempts to collect life insurance as well, and I've never seen an attempt as incompetent as this. I'm no fan of insurance companies, but when it comes to the murder of family members, which is almost always the case, there is almost always another contributing factor, even if the insurance may have been the leading reason; but in this case, even if it was a factor, I doubt if it was the leading factor. I have no way of knowing what the leading motive behind Joel Michael Guy Jr.'s actions, but there's little or no doubt that neither the media or the courts even tried to do a good job figuring it out, not are they trying to figure out how to reduce all forms of violence.
In the case of Joel Michael Guy Jr. the media had plenty of time to search for background information to explain why he went on this gruesome killing spree or consult with good academics that could tell them what to look for, but as usual, they hardly even tried to, when it comes to the most recent murders, of course they wouldn't have had time to investigate for most of them. However one rare exception where one media outlet, The New York Daily News reported on his abusive past five days after the shooting, as I reported previously in The Media Is Following The Wrong Script Ignoring Solutions Again; however the vast majority of traditional media ignored this, especially cable news, which gets the widest circulation. I can't quite say for certain that the increase in murders applies equally to the holidays, since 2018 when I found that it was definitely at least a little above average, possibly more if I missed a lot in my previous search, but it certainly wasn't much lower than the surge that began in 2020 and probably continued in 2021, and once again, there's still a chance that I missed more, especially since I didn't search as thoroughly for Thanksgiving and New Years, and some reports may not come out right away, even for Christmas. But regardless the following are some of the most dramatic murders, mostly domestic violence, followed by a longer list by states:
In Callahan Fla. a shooting left 3 family members dead, husband/father arrested: 'It doesn't make sense' 12/01/2021 Saying Wednesday morning's massacre at a Callahan home "doesn't make sense," Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper announced the arrest of William Conway Broyles in the deaths of his wife and two grown children. ... "When he was asked why he just didn't shoot himself, he said he was too scared to do that, which is crazy." This murder took place six days after Thanksgiving. The suspect was a directer of the local churches music program. Devout religious people seem to be as likely, if not more likely to commit murder as other people, as I pointed out in several previous articles comparing murder based on religious support. This was not listed on the list of mass shootings mentioned above, since only three people were shot; that list requires at least four people that were either killed or injured without giving more priority to those killed, so a mass hooting with four injuries but no deaths would make the list but three deaths and no injuries wouldn't. There were at least a couple other murder-suicides where two people were killed and the perpetrator also killed himself, and one double murder that also killed an unborn baby that didn't make this criteria listed below.
In Georgia on Thanksgiving day an eighteen year old allegedly killed his mother according to 'A beautiful soul' | Friend of mother reacts after deadly Ga. Thanksgiving Day stabbing 11/27/2021 Once again this was supposed to be a devoted mother and friends couldn't understand why it happened; however, there were reports of previous calls to the police for this family, indicating there may have been a history of some form of domestic violence that hasn't been fully reported by the media yet, and may not be. Another Roswell NM man, Elijah Medina, 39, was also accused of beating his mother to death on Thanksgiving Day 12/03/2021; there were few additional details of this murder, but once again there were previous reports of police investigation and a restraining order.
In South Dakota in the middle of December a Man exchanging Christmas card with police chief admits to killing his brother, pregnant sister-in-law 12/21/2021 He allegedly attacked his brother with a baseball bat on December 12th and Jessica, who was pregnant with an unborn child, with a machete, when she came home the next day. The suspect was a member of the same church as the police chief and a delivery person saw blood on the door at almost the same time they were exchanging cards, and he confessed. There were additional reports of arguments, and a surviving three year old child, which the suspect fed for a couple days before confessing.
In California a Thousand Oaks man, Saul Nava, 21, was charged after allegedly torturing, killing girlfriend on Christmas Eve 12/28/2021; there was no reports on motive or previous incidents in the initial report. Then on Christmas Day Austin Alvarez, 23, was accused of killing his grandmother, and his fathers girlfriend as they opened Christmas gifts 12/2/2021; as he fled their home he saw his father sitting in his truck and allegedly shot at him as well, but missed and kept going before eventually being caught. His sanity was questioned at his first court appearance, but there were no additional details about what caused this or how it might have been prevented.
Considering the population of California they had a minimal amount of violence during the holidays, but Alabama, which has been in the top ten for murder rates for at least ten years, if not decades longer, was much worse, perhaps the worst statistically in the country even though there are usually three or four states, including Louisiana, which is virtually always the most violent, that have higher murder rates. A Father and 14-year old son killed in a Christmas eve murder-suicide were identified in Meridianville, Alabama 12/27/2021 Rodney Gardner, 41, was apparently shot and killed by his son, Caleb Gardner, 14, on Christmas Eve following an argument, with little additional details. I usually focus on the long term causes of violence, so it can be prevented long before it escalates to this point, but in a case like this I can't help but wonder if the argument could have ended without murder and suicide if the fourteen year old didn't have a gun that escalated it fast instead.
There was also an Alabama woman accused of sex-trafficking 5-year-old daughter who was then killed 12 days before Christmas 12/31/2021 Jeremy Williams, 37, was charged with murder, and the mother may be charged as an accomplice or other related charges. There's no doubt that this is shocking and that there could be no excuse for it; butt here should be no doubt that it's also outrageous to have an economic system that forces a significant percentage of the population into desperate situations, some of whom will do desperate things. Once again there is research to show how to make incidents like this much less likely but the media refuses to report on it.
There was also a Christmas Eve Murder-Suicide in Florida Home With 4 Young Children Inside Leaves 3 Adults Dead, Police Name Attacker 12/26/2021 Leighton Josephs, 30, apparently killed two other people before killing himself but there are few additional details. There was a similar incident in Texas where 5 kids were found found alone on Christmas after parents’ ‘murder-suicide’ 12/27/2021 Their father, Arsenio Gonzalez, 45, apparently killed thier mother Maria Gonzalez, 42, shortly after midnight and were found dead on the front lawn. Similar stories like this are reported as isolated incidents around the country with little or no effort to figure out how to prevent them.
An Army Green Beret was charged with murder in Illinois bowling alley shooting 12/27/2021 This happened the day after Christmas when officers arrested Army Sgt. 1st Class Duke Webb, 37, who is a Florida resident, and charged him with three counts of murder and three counts of first-degree attempted murder, according to Shea. This is one of many shootings by veterans, which I've reported on before. The vast majority of veterans, of course, don't come back and go on killing sprees; however, there is evidence showing that they're more likely to kill than non-veterans and their most common victims are usually other veterans or their own family, which may be why those doing the most to recognize this problem and try to solve it are other veterans as I pointed out previously in Teach a soldier to kill and he just might.
There was also a bizarre incident in East Chicago Ind. where Eric Douglas, 32, was shot to death on Christmas morning 12/25/2021 and there may be reason to believe that the police might not be investigating it properly. "According to Rivera, detectives attempted to speak to potential witnesses inside the bar but the door was locked. When detectives knocked on the door, neither patrons nor staff would come to the door or open it. Rivera said East Chicago detectives plan to follow-up with the owner of the bar and contact the Indiana State Excise Police 'regarding previous problems with this establishment.' According to court records, the shooting victim spent most of the past 15 months locked up in the Lake County Jail awaiting trial on five felony charges stemming from a June 2, 2020, incident where Douglas allegedly pinned a state trooper between two vehicles before the trooper shot through Douglas' windshield striking him in the arm and pelvis." It seems to me that if the police wanted to get inside or interview the witnesses when they left they could easily have done so. Could they have been willing to look the other way because they were sympathetic to the police officer injured by the suspect? Or the person that killed the suspect? There may be even more doubts when considering the fact that the owner of the liquor license was Councilman-At Large Dwayne Rancifer according to Search warrant executed in homicide investigation at EC bar connected to councilman, police say 01/13/2022 This article says "Rancifer said while he is the owner of the liquor license to the bar, another individual is the operator of the business. The councilman said he has cooperated with police and has had no involvement in the day-to-day operations of the establishment." I can't rule out the possibility that there's more to this story that isn't being told.
As I said, the state that may come closes to Alabama for the most violence during the holidays per capita might be Louisiana, which virtually always has the highest murder rates, and there were two murders as reported in “I’m so scared,” neighbors, families reeling following Christmas Day murders in New Orleans La. 12/2/2021 Darian Walker, 19 and Tyrane Forest, 31, were killed, and a third injured in two incidents. It's unclear if this was a domestic dispute, but in the past few years, before the surge in murders in 2020, New Orleans saw some of their best reductions in violence in a long time. This may have resulted from some overdue reforms which should be reported on more so we can understand it and replicate it. This may have been partly reversed with the big surge in murders in 2020 and 2021, but it's no longer at or near the top of the most violent cities, since some of the other violent cities also saw surges in the last two years.
Michigan had their share of strange murders during the holidays as well including an Accused Mich. cannibal, Mark Latunski, charged with eating Grindr date’s genitals due in court 12/25/2021 "The man accused of slitting his victim’s throat, hanging him from his basement ceiling and eating his testicles in a grisly Christmas Eve 2019 murder will return to court early next year." This past year there was also a couple Twin Brothers, Family Dog Found Dead In After-Christmas Murder-Suicide; Father Also Injured 12/29/2021 two days after Christmas; if they counted the dog this would have met the criteria for a mass shooting, but apparently they didn't. On Christmas Day there was a double murder in Michigan as well and Detroit Mich. police shot, and killed Dwane McDonald the suspecttwo days later. 13 12/28/2021 This was also reported in Mother and Daughter Found Shot to Death in Detroit Mich. In Minnisota there were Murder charges: Landlord shot father, sister in Robbinsdale home days after seeking their eviction 12/28/2021 On Sunday, Ibn Abdullah, 47, unexpectedly stopped by the Brooklyn Park home of his brother, identified in charging documents as T.J. He told police that Ibn Abdullah confessed to shooting their sister and father in their apartment a few days ago, presumably Christmas Eve. This obviously wasn't a close family, otherwise they would have found their relatives sooner during the holidays, but his other brothers weren't going to go so far as to cover up for him, and reported him. A year ago on Christmas Day in Missouri there was another double murder of a mother and small child according to Ex-boyfriend, Timothy Brown, 30, responsible for Christmas double murder in Spanish Lake, Missouri, police say 12/28/2020 This suspect apparently killed himself a few days later according to Man accused of killing ex-girlfriend and her child on Christmas found dead after standoff with police 12/30/2020 Before he died he shot at police and they didn't confirm his death until sending in a robot to find his body.
This year in Missouri Brittany Wilson, 32, accused of killing boyfriend with sword on Christmas Eve 12/25/2021 and she seems quite proud of it. She claims that she and her boyfriend had taken some methamphetamine and that she believed he had "other entities living inside his body for the past several months," and that by stabbing him she was setting him free. Another strange event happened in Nevada according to I-Team: Las Vegas police find severed head while arresting Eric Holland, 57, on unrelated charges 12/25/2021 This was found two days before Christmas. Apparently extreme murders like this are more common than most people realize, even though you would think they would get more media attention.
On New Years Eve Florida deputies take their own lives, leave behind 1-month-old son 01/07/2022 Deputy Clayton Osteen attempted suicide on New Years Eve removed from life support on Jan. 2; Deputy Victoria Pacheco took her own life after learning of Osteen’s death. We here an enormous amount when police are killed in the line of duty but hardly anything about many more as the result of suicide, or in some cases murder suicide, which I've covered in other articles, including one last September. Nor do we here research showing how to prevent police violence against each other or us, or the fact that when all violence is reduced by addressing the causes of it before it escalates it also reduces violence against police.
And of course it was just over a year ago that Anthony Quinn Warner, self-employed computer guru was ID'd as lone Nashville bomber, killed in blast 12/27/2020 "Federal authorities say a 63-year-old Antioch man was responsible for a Christmas morning bombing that left the suspect dead and captured the nation’s attention over the holiday weekend as officials worked to determine who parked an RV downtown to detonate." This received obsession coverage a year ago; but we've been jumping from one obsession du jour after another so fast that most people forgot about it. There's little or no effort to teach about causes of violence so that we can prevent it and when the media does cover solutions they often give more coverage to celebrities, not the best researchers that can explain the best solutions, even if some of the celebrities have good intentions like the report yesterday from CNN about Jon Vaughn Why this ex-NFL player is vowing to give sexual abuse victims a voice. 01/30/2022 Jon Vaughn is, of course, a football player and I certainly don't fault him for trying to make a difference, which most of us should try to do or admire when others do it; but there are much better academic sources that can explain how improved child care, education about preventing child abuse reducing economic inequality, so that all people have fair economic opportunities and much more, but the media refuses to cover them.
