Frédéric Bastiat Was Right About "Legal Plunder" & It's Much Worse Now!

Frédéric Bastiat is probably most famous for a quote that makes the rounds occasionally on Social Media "When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it," which is true and applies to the current economy as much as it did in his time, if not much more. Most of his other writings is forgotten by the majority of the public, which is unfortunate, even if it has a few flaws, but he makes many other good points. However, if he gets more attention again, we should be cautious of people misrepresenting his work, which he actually warned about.

Today Frédéric Bastiat's most famous quote may seem to apply more to Capitalism than anything else, and justifiably so; but when he was alive he often applied it more to criticism against what he called Protectionism, Communism, which he opposed based on the assumption that it required Protectionism, and Socialism, which he wasn't completely opposed to but often criticized the way it was implemented; presumably because there was a strong Socialist movement in his time and he observed some powerful people distorting it for their own benefit. To the best of my knowledge his most detailed writings are listed in Selected Essays on Political Economy, Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850) Translated by Seymour Cain, and he passed away shortly after that, unable to continue writing, and there's good reason to believe that this was a work in process, and it was based on economics as he knew it in his time, which would have to be revised to apply it to current times.

As I indicated two of the things he seemed most concerned about were various forms of Plunder, including what he called Legal Plunder, and Protectionism which in his time, and for the most part now, refers to banning imports or tariffs on them to protect local industry, but this term is rarely used to protect from Plunder, protect the environment, protect workers rights, protect from wars based on lies and many other legitimate forms of protection, assuming they're used rationally, which should be a good idea, and, in some cases these rational forms of potential protectionism are prevented by the narrow interpretation the establishment uses it for, although Bastiat didn't anticipate this in his time. But, when it comes to most if not all the examples of protectionism cited by Bastiat in his essays they make sense and are often forms of plunder that should be banned.

The first essay, in the collection I cited above, "What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen," clearly describes a work in progress, where he describes several examples, mostly of tariffs designed to help special interests, and explains some things are immediately seen and others, although predictable, are only seen later, like the fact that people who are forced to pay high tariffs won't have money for other necessities that improve life and contribute to the quality of life. These are legitimate concerns, and he's right that good economists should foresee them, since they're so obvious; but there are other cases, that may not have been so easy to predict in his time, like current free trade policies attempting, often successfully, to ban protection of the environment or workers rights. When I read this it was pretty clear that his writings could easily be distorted to support current libertarian or free market policies; however some of his other writings oppose other forms of plunder, including against the poor or working class, which he acknowledges have the least political power, in his time and ours, which makes us the greatest target of "legal plunder," which is now as bad as ever, if not worse, but sometimes more sophisticated.

Even though he's almost forgotten by most people some academics have tried to use his writings to promote their own views, including complete opposition to all forms of what they call protectionism and complete support for the free market, or their version of a free market, which is actually dominated and corrupted by Oligarchs. Our current economic system, a form of Neo-Colonialism, is dominating most of the world, lead by Wall Street and their allies, including the IMF, The World Bank, and many of the most powerful countries in the world who are plundering the planet, robbing the poor and middle class with forms of "Legal Plunder" that would surely have outraged Frédéric Bastiat if he knew about it; and this system adopts opposition to Socialism, Communism and Protectionism, which is often used to suppress efforts to protect worker rights, environmental rights and other social rights which also would outrage Frédéric Bastiat!

The assumption that he would have supported current extreme opposition to Protectionism, even when it's used to enable profit at the expense of the environment and workers rights, among other things, is virtually guaranteed no to be true, although that doesn't mean we should jump to our own conclusions. However, even if I am mistaken about Bastiat taking too extreme a view against protectionism, or, more likely, the supporters of of our current economic system make it appear as if I am mistaken, this doesn't mean we should blindly obey all of Frédéric Bastiat's teachings anymore than we should blindly obey any other leader, including Karl Marx, like a mindless cult follower. Noam Chomsky once said something similar about Marx, recommending that we accept the best recommendations from him and fact check the rest, dismissing aspects, if any, that might not make sense; the same should apply to Frédéric Bastiat or anyone else.

Frédéric Bastiat obviously thought all forms of plunders should be abolished, if possible; but he had doubts about if the working class would do so, and suspected that instead they would reverse the process which would backfire, although there have been few if any cases where this happened. He acknowledged that
"legal plunder is exercised by the few against, the many, as it is among nations in which the right to legislate is concentrated in a few hands. But now it becomes universal, and an effort is made to redress the balance by means of universal plunder. Instead of being abolished, social injustice is made general. As soon as the disinherited classes have obtained their political rights, the first idea they seize upon is not to abolish plunder (this would suppose in them more wisdom than they can have), but to organize a system of reprisals against the other classes that is also injurious to themselves; as if, before justice reigns, a harsh retribution must strike all, some because of their iniquity, others because of their ignorance."

the clear implication is he didn't think the masses, in his time, would be able to minimize or eliminate "legal plunder" but he acknowledges that those controlling the legislature are much more likely to rob the majority. There may have been some justification for this since the French Revolution happened shortly before he was born, and there was limited improvements, at best, since; in fact it was only when upper classes, often somewhat abusive, took control that there was a reasonable amount of stability. Nevertheless, still more needed to be done to correct income inequality based on legal plunder, by those controlling the laws. He also argues that legal plunder is worse than illegal plunder because
"With courage and prudence, a man can protect himself from illegal plunder, but no one can escape from legal plunder. If someone tries, what is the distressing spectacle presented to society? A plunderer armed with the law, a victim resisting the law." .......

But even in such cases the Montagnards have been known to applaud. Is it not because they want above all to see the principle of legal plunder securely established as a precedent? Once the legal plunder of the poor for the profit of the rich is made legitimate by the support of the majority, how reject the legal plunder of the rich for the benefit of the poor?

He's right, of course, and it's far worse now than it was when he lived. He does come to the defense of the poor or working class, but may not do so as much as he could have, and perhaps should have. For example, at one point he comes to the defense of miners for not getting adequate compensation for their work, but says nothing about the horrible conditions in the mines at that time; and other defenders of worker rights do a far better job pointing out many other problems.

Regardless of whether he does enough to defend the working class or not, our government and media have created a much more sophisticated propaganda machine to convince the majority of the public that this is a Democratic government even though they have contempt for the will of the people, and the media is completely controlled by the rich who only provide fair coverage for candidates they support, ensuring those who try to represent the people have little or no chance of getting the name recognition they need to get elected; and when some good candidates, like Jill Stein, Jeremy Corbyn, Zohran Mamdani manage to get some attention the establishment media relentlessly smears them, making it virtually impossible if not impossible for these candidates to win.

As I pointed out previously in Conclusive Proof Showing Democracy In The USA Is A Lie! there are over two dozen polls based on economic issues where a large majority of the public is on one side of the issue, campaign donors are on the other side of the issue; and in every case the overwhelming majority of the political establishment take the side of the campaign donors, rigging the economy and carrying out legal plunder against the majority of us! One of the biggest and most brazen examples is how our private health care system is designed to enable the rich to steal funds intended to be used for health care even though the result is that without those funds sick people can't get adequate health care and they suffer much more, and even die earlier as a result of this. If their any doubt about this, or the fact that the majority of the public don't support this system, there are numerous studies or polls, some that I pointed out previously, proving this.

Studies that support this conclusion include 22 studies agree: 'Medicare for All' saves money 02/24/2020; Medicare for All Would Save $450 Billion and 68,000 Lives: Study 02/18/2020; and The Troubled Insurance Sales Firm Behind Those Joe Namath Ads for Medicare Advantage 12/13/2021 which says "Researchers have found that aside from the financial risks, choosing the wrong plan can literally knock years off your life." Polls that support this conclusion include Polls showing 70% support Medicare for All & 85% of Democrats. Additional polls are also cited in the previous article mentioned above Conclusive Proof Showing Democracy In The USA Is A Lie! and another article about Is Privatized Health Care Government Sanctioned Extortion? Simply understanding the fundamentals of insurance, also known as pooled risk, is enough to understand how flawed and inefficient the for profit system is and why it costs billions of dollars and thousands of lives more than a public system would, assuming the public system had adequate disclosure and checks and balances.

With pooled risk, whether it's private for profit insurance, a form of government run single payer insurance or a similar program, people pay into the pool of funds that are needed for health care, or what ever cause (auto, life, property, etc.) the insurance is used for, but tehy can't eliminate bureaucratic expenses, no matter what the system is, although they can be minimized. The establishment has told us for decades that competition creates increased efficiency, but they can't change fundamental principles and there are many expenses in a for profit system that has nothing to do with providing health care or another service which are unnecessary in a public system; so if you allow well run public systems to compete with for profit private systems the for profit system can't compete. Instead of competing to "be more efficient," as insurance companies want us to believe, they compete by spending an enormous amount on advertising without providing much, if any, honesty about saving money on insurance by switching to their company. In addition to advertising expenses insurance companies spend an enormous amount on high CEO Pay, Stock Dividends, lobbying expenses, campaign contributions, and many other expenses that have nothing to do with Health coverage or other insurance related services or products.

They even spend a fortune on legal expenses to ensure they don't have to pay claims as they advertise!

Don't take my word for it!

Look up Wikipedia: List of United States hurricanes pick a Hurricane then Google "Lawsuits against insurance companies for Hurricane Katrina (Or the hurricane of your choice)" then read up on all the lawsuits filed against insurance companies. One of the first ones I found is AG Lynn Fitch settled Katrina insurance cases for pennies on the dollar compared to others 10/03/2022, but there are many more where that came from, and policy holders often don't get help from government sources. If you repeat this process over and over again you'll find dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of articles about lawsuits against insurance companies, depending on how much time you're will to put into this search showing that insurance companies have an astronomical legal fund to deny or minimize payments for claims promised in those deceptive advertisements!

Where do they get the money for legal expenses to deny all these claims?

Your Premiums? If not, where else?

So, instead of using money intended for claims, the for private private insurance industry, is using some of that money collected to deny claims to help increase profits! The same goes for other types of insurance as well including Health Care; feel free to Google "Lawsuits against insurance companies for denying Health Care" or a variety of other phrases.

If this isn't a massive example for "legal plunder" what is?

How many other examples are there of "legal plunder?" I have no doubt that if we look through one aspect after another of our economic system we'll find one example after another, perhaps starting with all the polls I previously mentioned in Conclusive Proof Showing Democracy In The USA Is A Lie! where a large majority of the public was on one side of the issue but the political establishment takes the side of campaign donors against the will of the people. In most, if not all cases, we'll find direct or indirect evidence of rigging the economy in favor of wealthy campaign donors, and often costing thousands, if not millions of lives in addition to massive amounts of money stolen from the working class by the wealthy, although not everyone will agree on all these examples.

A large percentage of the public support an increase in the Minimum Wage, nine years ago we were pushing for $15 an hour, now, even though we haven't even got that most people would support even more. Is this too much? Do billionaires actually earn their money or do they get it by "legal plunder?" How can there be any doubt the system is rigged, although there can be doubts about how to fix it, but a higher minimum wage, as most people believe, should be part of it, to reduce massive inequality.

There was also an enormous amount of support for a Green New Deal, including, at least during the 2018 campaign, from AOC and the so-called Squad, although they forgot about this and most other progressive issues once in office. This is one example where the rich clearly get a large majority of the benefit from industrialization accompanied by massive amount of pollution from increased profits and massive spending, including on private Jets, etc., but the poor get stuck with the pollution making them sick and even killing them!

The majority want to expand Social Security, and Bastiat might have some doubts about that possibly even considering it plunder by the majority, or that might be what critics of Social Security might attribute to Bastiat, whether he came to that conclusion of not; however this is available for everyone, and it's an earned benefit, not an entitlement. The alternative is letting the rich live a healthy retirement while plundering the poor and leaving the poor destitute.

Most people support using the military as a last resort; but the establishment almost never do that, and we have to foot the bill for it. I've covered this in other articles, showing all wars, not just most, but all wars are based on lies by the well connected and the military industrial complex profit from these wars based on lies, along with other Wall Street corporations supporting Neo-Colonialism with wars based on lies, while it's the working class sacrificing their lives, along with millions of civilians in third world countries killed in these wars, and they also contribute to massive amounts of pollution and Ecocide, killing even more. This is not only legal plunder, but legal mass murder, genocide and ecocide!

The vast majority support fair immigration as well, but this poll only covers a fraction of the "legal plunder" related to this. Our country has a long history of supporting coups and wars against third world countries, even though the majority of the public doesn't support this, which creates a massive refugee problem, and since those creating this catastrophe won't admit their crimes they portray their victims as illegal aliens or criminals, when the real criminals are the ones exploiting the immigrants and overthrowing Democratic governments, so once again, this is not only an example of "legal plunder" exploiting oppressed people making them work for low wages and without legal protection, but it's also related to "legal mass murder!"

Most people support higher taxes on the wealthy, since they obviously don't earn their wealth, so this helps return some of the "legal plunder" stolen from the working class to them. If we end the "legal plunder" in the first place this might be more effective, but reasonable taxes will still be more appropriate.

of course a large majority of the public supports campaign finance reform, since it's a major part of the reason why the entire political establishment is obsessed with supporting "legal plunder!" But of course, the same people profiting from this are protecting the corrupt system.

The majority want to reform racists incarceration system possibly because it's a result of massive amounts of "legal plunder" where the biggest thieves almost never go to jail while the poor have the system rigged against them, often for petty non-violent crimes many of which should never be a crime in the first place, other crimes, like petty theft, are often a result of a rigged economy forcing people to desperate actions.

The majority support tuition free college, and Karl Marx also supported education for all, because he recognized people needed to be informed on the issues to participate in the Democratic process, among other things. Frédéric Bastiat also supported reasonable funding for education as he indicated when he admitted that he supported a tax for education, only regretting it later when he realized those getting the education were only a minority that mostly came from the wealthy class, while it was the working class paying the taxes for it. I suspect he would be more inclined to support a fair education system for all, which we are now able to provide. But there might be some exceptions worth considering; while many college courses, like medical care etc., are worthwhile, some, like marketing or political science where the children of the wealthy study how to manipulate the majority enabling "legal plunder' might not be worth complete support. However, since this is already commonplace, it would be worthwhile to teach these tactics to the majority for the purpose of recognizing "legal plunder" and preventing it.

Most people support universal childcare; and as I've pointed out previously, studies have shown that this helps reduce other social problems and actually saves money, so even if this doesn't involve "legal plunder" it's worthwhile.

The majority support capping Credit Card interest rates, which we used to call loan sharking when this was handled by the Mafia; now that banks with political connections are doing it the government protects this "legal plunder."

Most people agree that arms sales make us less safe, and research shows they're right, but of course the wealthy profit from this and the wars accompanied by arms sales, so we subsidize arms sales used to oppress people around the world, which is not only another example of "legal plunder" but it's also another example of "legal mass murder" and even "legal genocide."

Most people oppose outsourcing, and as I said Frédéric Bastiat had doubts about this, but in his time trade was mostly with other countries close to France with similar cultures, not a globalized economy where poor people are now forced to compete with other poor people all over the world driving wages down everywhere. There's good reason to suspect that Frédéric Bastiat would want to protect workers rights, as he did in his time; but even if he didn't on this issue, it's up to us to see how our current system is a form of "legal plunder" and it also leads to environmental damage and ecocide, which needs to stop.

By a four to one margin (62-14%), Americans favor the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The political establishment blocks this because it would prevent "legal plunder" exploiting children for the benefit of Wall Street Oligarchs.

Most people agree unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings who cannot afford legal representation should be provided with it, and our government has always claimed that the law treated all alike, even though this has never been close to the truth. The Oligarchs, of course, oppose this, since giving children or immigrants legal rights would make it much more difficult to get away with their "legal plunder" against them!

Let's face it, our government is controlled by crooks enabling "legal plunder" by Wall Street Oligarchs funding their campaigns!

Is the truth for sale on commercial media?

Commercial media is owned by six corporations controlling well over 90% of national media, they cover expenses by selling ads, and are owned by a fraction of one percent of the wealthiest people in the country; I don't see how there could be any doubt that money is corrupting the vast majority of the media. Wealthy people control virtually all powerful institutions, and they've demonstrated with their actions that they're not above using propaganda to indoctrinate everyone they can, if they can get away with it, to rig everything in their favor. They do this even though they already have more money and political power than they need and increased amount of money or political power will do nothing to increase their own quality of life, although it may cause a serious deterioration for society, which is already underway in many so-called "sacrifice zones," which will eventually backfire even on them.

Are they so insane that they'll distort the truth even when it comes to environmental destruction and Climate Change, which will inevitably destroy even them eventually?

The closer you look at the evidence the more obvious that it appears they've already answered with their actions, and the answer is yes!

The Republicans don't even pretend they want to solve this problem at all, often claiming that Climate Change is a hoax; even if some of the claims surrounding Climate Change are flawed, there's little doubt among credible scientists that most of it is real, and even if that weren't true, there's much more to pollution related problems than Climate Change, and the evidence is much stronger for a lot of it. The vast majority of environmental destruction is in third world countries, or in the poorest part of our country, often where minorities live, and there's overwhelming evidence to prove this, assuming the establishment is willing to look at that evidence, which they're usually not. One good source, Which Countries Destroy the Environment the Most (and Least)? 05/01/2017 says that we started using natural resources faster than the planet could produce them back in 1970, and that it's been getting steadily worse sine then; several other sources including The World Is Using Natural Resources Faster Than Ever Before 07/30/2019 claim that we used natural resources 75% faster than the planet can replenish them in 2019, and previous reports, including We’re Depleting Natural Resources Twice As Fast As Nature Can Recover. Here’s The Good News. 07/31/2018, indicate it was only 70% in 2018, which may indicate it's growing by about 5% per year, which would mean we may be using resources 90% faster than the earth can replenish them this year, although that's subject to confirmation. And yet the biggest corporations causing environmental damage are constatly coming up with propaganda to downplay their faults and promote an economic system based on constant growth selling people things they don't need including How Walmart convinced critics it can sell more stuff and save the world 10/13/2022 which is a long rambling article trying to explain how Walmart has dealt with all their critics, implying their bad reputation was behind them; yet it can't change the fact that constant growth is incompatible with reversing environmental damage, and shows some of the green-washing described by Christine MacDonald reported on in Green Inc.

Despite claims by the Democrats that they want to address this problem, like campaign promises from the squad during the 20128 campaign and President Biden's recent claims that "good environmental policies are good economic policies," which sounds very good, and it is true, but they're doing little or nothing to make the major changes that are needed to reverse this process. and there's still a massive amount of propaganda to deny Climate Change is real funded by the oil companies, even if there isn't quite as much as there used to be. Furthermore, commercial media sells and enormous amount of propaganda ads, which they often deceptively refer to as public relations ads about many other subjects giving wealthy, for profit organizations, a massive advantage over more honest grassroots organizations that aren't making a lot of money to deceive the public and pay for the ads. This includes massive amount of ads for insurance, or to prevent Medicare for All, which a large majority of the public supports, other pooled risk financial services like after market warranties, which are just as inefficient, ads about how corporations are giving benefits to their employees, often even when they have major protests or lawsuits based on labor practices, and when the benefits are a small fraction of what they pretend to offer, investment firms claiming to help the poor while rigging the economy doing far more damage than their small charity donations, and many more deceptive ads that are extremely biased, if not outright lying.

However, unlike pollution and epidemic environmental destruction including Climate Change, most of these other issues don't literally involve ecocide or destruction of the planets ability to support life. You would think that no one would be stupid enough to create a massive amount of propaganda to guarantee they can increase profits in the short term by eventually destroying the environment and everyone else, including themselves. You would be wrong. The most powerful people in the world are being led by oil and financial companies, with the help of other major Wall Street corporations, the media, and the vast majority of the political establishment to create an ideology that will eventually destroy us, although I can't be certain when, or which warnings from researchers are the most accurate.

However, although there should be no doubt that we're destroying the planet, even though, at best it could be deacades before it gets much worse for people living in wealthy areas, or we conclusively pass the point of no return, the oil companies and their Wall Street allies have been buying up propaganda, corrupting politicians and the media, and funding inaccurate science to prevent the solutions that we need, which should have started decades ago. It seems to me like there were much more of their propaganda ads about five years ago; however, I've still seen a few ads from Chevron or think tanks portraying domestic oil, like the keystone pipe line as the most effective solution to our energy problems. And even when there are ads promoting clean energy, they often exaggerate how much is being produced, and some of it may be green-washing for the oil companies; or when real environmental groups really do buy ads to protect the environment, they only have a minuscule fraction of the advertising budget. Some of this is explained in the following article from Grist, which explains when or why they increase their spending in some cases, among other things:

Big Oil spent $3.6 billion to clean up its image, and it’s working 12/24/2019

“You want to know one of the reasons we’re not acting on climate change? $3.6 billion spent on corporate propaganda might have something to do it.”

If you’ve ever seen an ad featuring ExxonMobil scientists handling beakers of green goo, the algae that will supposedly fuel the future, you’ve been the target of an oil company’s advertisement. Exxon isn’t trying to sell you a product, exactly — but it is hoping to sell you on the idea that it’s committed to a greener future.

Over the past 30 years, the world’s five biggest oil companies have forked over more than $3.6 billion for reputation-building ads like this one. “When we looked at the dollar amounts, we were sort of blown away,” said Robert Brulle, a visiting professor of environment and society at Brown University.

Promotional ad spending from Exxon, BP, Chevron, Shell and ConocoPhillips has fluctuated a lot over the years, so Brulle’s research team decided to figure out why. The results, published in the journal Climatic Change this month, suggest that oil companies pour money into promotional campaigns for two main reasons: to boost their reputation when they’re getting negative media coverage, and to influence policymakers when Congress is considering climate legislation.

Consider the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010, when BP’s oil rig exploded, filling the Gulf of Mexico with nearly 5 billion gallons of oil. Unsurprisingly, the news coverage was not exactly favorable. BP’s spending on promotions ads jumped from just $10,000 the year before the spill to a whopping $168 million in 2010, adjusted for inflation.

“If you want to make your case in a legal court, you gotta go get a lawyer,” Brulle said. “If you want to make your case in the court of public opinion, you gotta go get a public relations agent.” Complete article

Even if the oil industry isn't spending quite as much as they did about five years ago this clearly indicates that it may only be temporary, and that if action against Climate Change is taken it could increase much more. There is still plenty of ads promoting domestic energy, which often means either the Keystone Pipeline or Fracking, among other traditional fossil fuels that are destroying the environment, which they occasionally try to claim is much cleaner that it was previously, and with supposedly progressive politicians, like John Fetterman, who now says he supports fracking they may not feel as much need to spend as much on propaganda to convince us that Fracking is safe, for now. Furthermore, traditional oil companies have often tried to convince us they're promoting more clean energy like wind or solar often greatly over estimate what they're doing for clean energy as part of a green-washing propaganda campaign designed to clean up their reputations more than the environment, one of the greatest examples of this is British Petroleum's efforts to convince consumers that BP now stands for "Beyond Petroleum," even though they're only providing a token amount of investment in clean energy with much more spent on propaganda.

These propaganda ads obviously have no credibility, although many complacent people that don't things through will fall for it if it's repeated often enough; more important, the commercial media that makes massive amounts of money selling deceptive propaganda ads also has serious credibility, especially when they don't provide nearly as much coverage on issues exposing their own advertisers. This isn't limited to ads about environmental destruction or energy; it also includes ads about insurance or aftermarket warranties, which obviously make any industry involving pooled risk less efficient, since the more they spend on ads the less they have available for legitimate claims, worker relations, since, once again the more they spend on propaganda the less they can spend on employees safety or other employment issues, health care, or anything else! When it comes to the environment organizations like Grist and a few more I listed below are far more credible than traditional media, although caution should be taken to ensure that we don't rely on organizations that might gradually turn into green-washing organizations for Wall Street as Christine C. MacDonald pointed out in her book Green, Inc.: An Environmental Insider Reveals How a Good Cause Has Gone Bad 2008. This should be kept in mind when searching for good environmental news outlets, for example, when I Googled some of the best sources, one of the news sources recommended was Bloomberg Environmental, which I would be highly skeptical of, considering their ties to Wall Street corporations profiting off the destruction of the environment, and some news outlets might not be quite so obvious.

Even though some of the grassroots environmental organizations are among the best, there are also some satirical sites that are far better than traditional news, assuming you use reasonable discretion, which isn't always that hard, including The Yes Men on Climate Change which creates a lot of spoofs, some that make very good points and even exposes corporate hypocrisy. One excellent example of this is an article about how "BlackRock Does the Right Thing" 01/16/2019 which turns out to be a satire based on a BlackRock Hoax letter addressed to CEOs 01/16/2019 which actually gives very good advice, and if you think about it, in the long run it's also good economic advice, although they didn't see it that way. The following is an excerpt from the hoax letter, which they were forced to deny:
... But we find that the biggest contributor to uncertainty is also the greatest threat to the long-term stability of our economy and our investors’ assets: climate change. Companies must address climate risk factors or fail in their fiduciary duty.

.... With our partners in the Investment Stewardship Group, we criticized the Trump administration for pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change. We see the Paris Agreement as an important framework for long-term sustainability. Despite denouncing the short-term thinking that pervades management, BlackRock’s voting record has not aligned sufficiently with our own ideals. That’s going to change. Moving forward, we will demand more accountability. We will require all companies we hold stakes in to align their business models with the goals of the Paris Agreement. We have made strides in this direction, but the urgency of the threat demands that we increase our focus.

Purpose In Action, or Purposeful Inaction?

After extensively analyzing our role in driving market trends, and acting out of a need to protect our clients’ long-term returns, we have identified two pivots that we have the ability to make this year—a structural adjustment to our exclusionary-screen indices, and a cultural adjustment to our shareholder action:

First, we are expanding a screen of non-Paris compliant companies to now apply by default to all ETFs, mutual and other broad indexed funds we offer, except when investors opt out and explicitly ask for these stocks. It is not enough to simply create exclusionary funds that screen out certain companies, because we offer thousands of products and most investors are passive. To make good on the threat I issued last year, we will begin this work by divesting from coal companies in our actively managed funds. Within 5 years, more than 90% of our 1000+ investment products will be converted to screen out non-Paris compliant companies such as coal, oil, and gas, which we see as declining and endangered. As a result, an increased percentage of our assets under management will align with our ESG values while sustaining high returns. This approach keeps responsibility in the hands of our clients, who will always have the choice to opt-out of our vision of a stable future and back into coal, oil, and gas.

Second, BlackRock will shift its approach to engagement. We have always supported management, but our clients have become impatient with companies that tout ESG values but do not align their planning to a Paris-compliant model. Beginning in 2019, BlackRock resolves to use our considerable stake in energy and related sectors to vote in favor of management only when we find them to be working toward net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We will use our shareholder position to keep companies accountable to resolutions that align with these values, and aggressively vote down those that do not. In cases where companies consistently fail to value long-term viability, we will vote out obstructionist boards and vote in members who are more forward-thinking.

This adds to the evidence that they must understand how much damage they're doing to the environment, assuming they actually want to know the truth, but they insist on trying to maximize short term profits, even though they know it will backfire on everyone, including themselves. Prior to this spoof letter BlackRock had been putting out statements to indicate they were concerned with Climate Change, and they continue to do so to this day; however, when this letter came out and some investors thought it was real they expressed outrage, and BlackRock was forced to admit that they didn't intend to do any of the things in the letter and that it was a spoof, which showed the real intentions of wealthy investors. While the spoof letter was forgotten within months, if not sooner, by MSM the deceptive propaganda was repeated over and over again, which is the way propaganda works. The lies are repeated over and over, while the truth falls down the memory hole, on the rare occasions where it comes out at all.

Now, in addition to making false propaganda claims about protecting the environment, BlackRock is producing ads about how they're handling pensions for working people, in the New England area highlighting a local fire department union that they're managing funds for. However, once again, it doesn't take much research to find out that they've previously been sued for looting pension funds, and more recently have been accused of funding Russia's war in Ukraine. Ironically, even though their propaganda to make themselves look environmentally friendly or socially responsible in other ways is almost all false, conservative groups are accusing them of being too "woke," which, intentionally or not, plays into their hands making it look like their propaganda is true even though it's not.

The bottom line is, if we continue to allow the wealthy elites with fanatical ideologies to control the propaganda we use to make important decisions, not only will they rig the economy in their favor turning most of us into virtual slaves, but they'll eventually destroy the planet as well, although I don't exactly how long it will take!

The decision has already been made, as demonstrated by the actions of powerful corporations, politicians, the media, and other in a position of power to resolve this problem; they're going to maximize short term profit even though they know, or should know, that it will destroy our planet and eventually themselves. There are plenty of environmentalists that recognize this, and are trying to change this; but they're not in a position to reverse it without help from wealthy elites, or a massive percentage of the public that currently remains complacent, and is going along with the program of the oligarchs. The majority of the public has indicated with their actions as well, they're not going to help unless the damage impacts them. So unless something changes soon things will get much worse before they get better, assuming they ever get better, even though we have the technology and ability to greatly reduce this problem, if not solve it.

Media Extortion From Charities, Insurance & other scams?

Do you think media oligarchs should get a cut every time you donate to charity, buy insurance or make many other purchases? With our current economic system you may not always have a choice, especially if you don't pay attention to how many organizations spend the money they collect from you. Even if you do pay attention, you may not have access to reliable information to make your decisions, although there are some cases where you can minimize the amount they virtually extort from the public, thanks to the fact that a fraction of 1% controls over 95% of the media and they treat speech like a commodity, that is far from free.

Treating speech as a commodity brazenly contradicts the fundamentals of our economic system; or at least it wiould if critics of the system had a fair chance to get their views across, which they don't since speech isn't free. The basic principles of our competitive economic system, which almost go without saying now, are that business compete by providing a better quality product, better service or a lower price, which sounds good, and would be good if it's still true. However many industries, including insurance, charity, weight loss programs etc. compete primarily by selling the most effective propaganda ads, which drive their bureaucratic expenses up, without improving the quality of their service or product, or worse they make it even less effective, which is the case with insurance and charities, among other things.

To put it simply, the more they spend on deceptive advertising, the less they have available for insurance claims, care for a charitable cause, or any other product being advertised; and the ads have an incentive to distort the truth whenever they can to increase profits or donations. When corporations or charities have enormous advertising budgets, often with strong appeals to emotions and little or no fact checking, a large part of what they're selling is propaganda, with the media taking a large cut, not the product, service, or charity they claim to be selling.

Fortunately there are some charity accountability groups that help expose the biggest frauds; unfortunately, some of these organizations, including "Charity Navigator," have given surprisingly high ratings for some major charities which have been caught in repeated scams. Fortunately they do expose some of the biggest scams including 10 Charities Overpaying their For-Profit Fundraisers; these 10 charities spend more than 50% of its budget paying for-profit fundraising professionals to solicit your hard-earned money, and only between 5% and 27% is directed towards its programs and services. There are other smaller charities that are even worse, often raising money through telemarketing or other means, and either spending almost all of it on fundraising and pocketing the rest or only spending one or two percent on charities. These aren't on TV, which would draw more scrutiny, and when they get caught they often shut down and start right back up again under a new name.

One of the biggest charities advertising on TV, the ASPCA, which didn't spend nearly as much money on advertising twenty to thirty years ago, isn't nearly as inefficient as these charities, but it's far from the most efficient charity either, and some critics raise doubts about the leading fact checkers. Activist Facts have raised even more doubts about the ASPCA, including the fact that they don't necessarily give much, if anything to local SPCAs, which many people are unaware of and they reviewed scandals both recent and years or decades old. Furthermore, if you accept the ratings from Charity Navigator, both Pet Smart and PAWS Chicago spend less than a quarter of the percentage on fund raising; they report that ASPCA spend just over 20% on fund raising while Pet Smart spends less than 2% and PAWS Chicago less than 5%, although further fact checking them before donating is advisable. Those wanting to donate to protect animals might be far better off donating to local shelters, which might include local SPCAs that may not get a cut of the donations collected through these commercials, while the media does get a cut.

However some charities advertising on television have a much worse track record including Wounded Warrior Project which I went into more in Wounded Warrior Project finances War Propaganda with donations five years ago. According to Charity Navigator they spend about 24% of their revenue on fund raising; however Paddock Post indicates the waste is higher, Where Does $100 to Wounded Warriors Go (2019)? 07/16/2020 and they also report on Executive Compensation at the Wounded Warriors 02/09/2018 they have fifteen executives making more than $100,000, thirteen of those make over $200,000 and the highest paid person, while they were being caught in numerous scandals, was making over $600,000, yet they have relatively high rankings on several Charity review organizations, including Charity Navigator.

Shortly after that I reviewed "Mind of the Market" by Michael Shermer and I immediately recognized that World Vision, which he provided positive propaganda for, without questioning how much they spent on fundraising, which had to be a lot judging by his review; and in addition to that I Googled them and found out they were involved in several scandals, some going back decades. When I checked back again a couple years ago in We Must Become The Media And The Scientists! I found that there were even more scandals; and while preparing this article I checked again and found even more which are listed below. Despite all these scandals they're ranked fairly well by several charity watch groups including Charity Navigator, although they don't make their best rankings.

Now that over 95% of national media is controlled by a fraction of 1% and that tehy get their funds and profits from selling these deceptive ads they have an incentive to minimize coverage of these scandals, if they cover it all. Some of the best reporting on these scandals either come from smaller organizations that few are familiar with or it took place before the consolidations of the media was complete, including the following article, which raises many questions that are still relevant today:

TV CHARITIES: LET THE GIVER BEWARE 01/20/1985

CHARITY BY TELEVISION: The tube sells everything from new cars to light beer to starving children in Ethiopia. You know what you’ve got on the former--but how can you tell that the starving children are getting fed with your dollars? A report on TV fund raising by David Johnston and Jennifer Leonard, Page 3. They all get sold on TV--new cars, light beer and starving children from the Third World.

People who are moved to spend their money on the first two pretty much know what they’re getting. But what about the money that people spend as donations to feed children in faraway lands?

How do people know whether TV charities that ask--nay, plead and beg--for contributions will spend the money wisely, or even spend it as they promise?

For the most part, donors don’t know.

TV and charity have formed a grandly profitable partnership that is one of the last great unregulated financial frontiers in America.

TV fund raising is a booming, fiercely competitive business that leaders in the field say brings in well in excess of 1 billion tax-deductible dollars annually. TV’s growing sophistication at mastering the emotional skills to separate people from their money is being adopted by TV charities.

The biggest TV charity, World Vision Inc., based in Monrovia, broadcasts videotaped shows from a stage featuring giant clockworks and the theme that “time is running out” for a starving child somewhere.

A carefully worded appeal for money is made every three minutes on World Vision’s programs because research shows that is the most effective approach, according to Russ Reid, the Pasadena advertising executive who produces these and many other fund-raising shows. Such appeals helped generate $128 million in donations to World Vision last year--or one-third of a million dollars every day.

The problem of not knowing whether a TV charity does what it claims was illustrated Jan. 11 when the news broke that the Ventura County district attorney is investigating International Christian Aid (ICA) based in Camarillo. ICA, a major TV charity, raised $33 million worldwide in 1983.

ICA purchased 49 spots on Cable News Network, at a cost of $500 to $4,500 a spot, asking for money to aid starving Ethiopians. It also aired appeals on other stations including KHJ-TV, Channel 9, in Los Angeles.

But no evidence exists that ICA has done any relief work in Ethiopia.

ICA founder L. Joe Bass denies any wrongdoing. He told a press conference last week that the charity has bought $35,000 worth of food and medical supplies to send to other relief groups in Ethiopia. Bass said he assumes these supplies are sitting on a dock “somewhere” awaiting shipment to Addis Ababa. Complete article

This was published thirty-five years ago, yet little or nothing has been done to increase accountability; if anything, it may be much worse, since the consolidation of the media escalated in the nineties, and we now have only five or six corporations controlling over 95% of national media and some of the largest remaining media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, which published that article, are owned by billionaires.

World Vision doesn't advertise nearly as much as they used to, possibly because they've been caught in way to many scams, but there are many more fraudulent charities, or at least ones that spend too much on ads, to take their place. Even though World Vision doesn't advertise nearly as much as they used to they still keep coming back, otherwise they couldn't get caught in new scams. If you Google their ads, you'll find them, and it's clear they're still running them on some TV stations even though I haven't seen many if any in years. Wounded Warriors was one of the rare charity scams to actually be exposed on national TV about six years ago, and there ads stopped for several years before gradually coming back, after people had time to forget the scams, which were never addressed.

Many business ads are also incredibly obvious scams, often even worse than charities, including just about any financial ad selling pooled risk like insurance, which I've reviewed before, and aftermarket warranties, which operate on the same basic financial principles. Just like insurance, aftermarket warranties have to cover expenses, including advertising, which makes it less efficient, and make a profit before paying for repairs, which means they have to charge more than the warranty is worth or refuse to cover repairs, using one excuse or another to stay in business and make a profit. Once you understand fundamental principles of financial scams it's easy to recognize them and often find others exposing the scam including the Better Business Bureau which reports many complaints with CarShield They rarely ever provide reviews this bad. It should be obvious that Ice-T and many other celebrities are obvious scam artists.

This scam is so obvious that even one local news outlet from Atlanta exposed their scam a couple years ago, Investigation finds extended warranty company falls short on coverage 08/26/2019 Their consumer advisor Clark Howard said, “If you want an extended service contract or warranty on your vehicle, only buy the manufacturers own. If you have a Ford, buy a Ford. If you have GM, buy a GM, Toyota, etc. That's the only way you know the money you're spending will actually work for you.” I would go one step further and recommend that consumers settle for the standard warranty, and if they consider it inadequate they might want to take their business elsewhere. Good manufacturers want to preserve their reputation and they make their money selling the product not deceptive financial services.

The fact that this news station even reported it is extremely rare, and it's virtually guaranteed that they didn't get any business from CarShield, which is still buying an enormous amount of ads just about everywhere else. This is why commercial media is so reluctant to expose these scams, but occasionally they do try to get brownie points for drawing attention to scams and forcing them to pay one claim here or there, presenting the media as the hero.

Diet programs and exercise programs are among the biggest scams, constantly trying to convince people they have to spend more in order to lose weight or exercise. More often than not, if people buy expensive exercise equipment, it's a matter time before they start hanging their clothes on it without using it. The best deals on low fat food don't require buy a specific brand name and letting someone else dictate your diet, especially since few stick to those diets.

On the other hand, those that do the best job losing weight and staying fit, don't need to pay those selling scams in all these ads; they just eat less and exercise more without paying extra for it. Many people may have motivational and insecurity problems; however, giving money to someone pitching a scam isn't going to help solve that, and they often jump from one scam to another. One possible solution for some people might involve joining an exercise group that meets in public places. These can be organized for little or no money among friends. If there's a professional group leader meeting in public parks, they shouldn't have to charge much money, but non-professional groups would probably be better for those willing to organize them. In some cases, depression or other emotional issues might be a factor in their weight problem, but falling for scams certainly won't make those problems better, if anything they make them worse.

In at least one case Dr. Oz, was implicated in a diet product that proved to be a scam. Dr. Oz isn't the only high profile pundit or media expert that has been implicated in fraud; Drew Pinsky and Phillip McGraw have both been implicated in major scandals, including using pseudo-science to treat drug and alcohol problems while being more concerned with increasing ratings than with treating patients.

So called media experts that have financial conflicts of interests like Dr. Oz, Phil or Drew, aren't the exception, they're the rule. A lot of these professional scam artists have been introduced on Oprah Winfrey's show, including Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Suzy Orman, all who have been caught in major scams. They all took advantage of massive media coverage from mainstream media, but were usually only exposed in their scams at a much lower profile, so they can repeat them over and over again.

Officially the media is required to serve the public's interests, which to some degree they may have done decades ago; however after the consolidation of the media so that six corporations control over 95% of national media and massive amounts of deregulation for all corporations any accountability the media once might have had is now gone. They're now a for profit organization with little or no accountability that maximizes their profits by selling fraudulent ads.

Almost all the national media pundits that you see on TV and many local news people are all multimillionaires. They don't get that rich be exposing the scams they sell, they get rich by looking the other way giving tacit support for all these scams! In most cases, if you see something with a large advertising budget on TV you would be better off researching them before buying them, even if the scam isn't quite so obvious. If you rely on traditional media there's little or no chance that you'll find the best exposes of these scams, but in many cases, if you check alternative media or start Googling any given product, service or charity, you might find they're involved in scams.

One thing we should never forget is the old saying, which applies to most commercials, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!"

These everyday ‘scams’ have become so normalized that we hardly even notice them anymore 12/09/2020

Subtle shakedowns that we just accept on a daily basis ....

Here are some of the most popular responses:

Cable TV

“The whole idea of paying was to create a revenue stream separate from that of marketing. There are a few out there (HBO, I think) but generally we pay to access the content and still have to spend 20% of the time sitting through commercials.”

Bottled water

“Like Dasani. Especially in places like an amusement park that marks up the price a shocking amount. Also the average markup of bottled water is 4000%, which is f***ing outrageous, bc water is literally free most places.”

Hospitals

“I recently got an ER bill with itemized prices for the tests I had (a couple hundred bucks total) and then $2600 for ’emergency room.’ Like, all the actual medical things I had done had already been listed. They just tacked this on. It’s like going to a restaurant and getting a bill that says hamburger $8, coffee $2, salad $4, diner $65.“

Ticketmaster

“Basically scammers adding huge mark ups but making it impossible to use anyone else.”

College tuition

“Why aren’t they held to a competitive pricing model as opposed to having to take out a mortgage to go to school? Everyone wants to talk about government paying for college education, but there is no conversation on why is it that expensive anyway? Especially when some unis have endowments in the billions that just the interest on those funds could literally pay the tuition for everyone that goes through the door.“

Funerals

“The funeral industry has insane pricing. Some of the funeral homes and vendors are even predatory, getting grieving families to pay upwards of tens of thousands of dollars, because ‘that’s what the deceased would have wanted.'”

Ink cartridges

“Printer companies make barely any profit off of actual printers, they’re just vessels to make you buy unreasonably priced cartridges.”

Diamond rings

“Basically the entire wedding industry. Starting a new life together? Why not plunge yourselves into thousands of dollars of debt?” Complete article
