Walmart Crime Report May 2026

Walmart had another thirteen more shootings in May of 2026, with at least five of them killing one person and one of those killing two for a total of six people killed in shootings. One of those fatal shootings and one non-fatal shooting were both by police officers shooting and killing or injuring suspects, another of the victims was a Walmart worker. There were also at least eight people injured in these shootings, including the one shot by police. There was a threat of a mass shooting with no follow up and there was a real mass shooting off their property, but survivors met at their store.

There were also more than half a dozen more gun related crimes without firing shots including robberies, carjackings and other armed crimes. In addition to the six people killed in shootings there were three dead people found in their parking lots, most of not all were considered "not suspicious" or overdoses, but there's little or no discussion about why it happens several times just about every month, two people killed in accidents and one death related to a recall, for a total of at least twelve deaths.

There have been more than the usual number of claims of scams by Walmart or major consumer complaints in the last month, including one where they advised a customer that bought a new refrigerator which didn't work to charity and buy another new one, and for some reason he did, instead of insisting on a replacement that actually worked, but the second one didn't work either, after they agreed to take it back and give him a refund they returned the refrigerator and told them they couldn't accept the return because it wasn't in the original box. As of the writing of the News story this problem wasn't resolved; but Walmart has a history of making absurd blunders like this then finally accepting responsibility when stories are spread on the media and they face negative media coverage and obvious loss of sales. There was at least one other case where a woman finally got a refund last month after waiting three months only after the media reported on it. There were also several complaints about oil changes or changing tires which they botched, complaints about over pricing or charging for things customers didn't buy and a former worker who complained about sexual harassment, but instead of investigating it they allegedly fired the victim.

Walmart's new anti-theft measures now include an Automated License Plate Reader, which may raise doubts about spying on all customers without due process. They're increasingly demanding large amounts of reparations from many suspects, often poor or desperate, including one case where a thief was ordered to pay them $140,000 reparations and was sentenced to eight years in prison at tax payers expense. This will leave him destitute for life and more likely to force him into commit more crimes. Get tough on crime supporters may approve this, and go one step further and require restitution for prison expenses, but this makes no sense since he would never be able to pay for it. One of the biggest problems with practices like this is they're virtually never applied to wealthy people committing white collar crimes even though they often cost society much more, and they can actually afford to pay it. If the economy wasn't rigged in favor of the rich or they weren't allowed to get away with epidemic levels of crime then there would be far less crime by the poor who are often forced into desperation.

There was a panic after a man pulled a pin on a fake grenade, and another when another man threatened people with a fake gun. There were at least two kidnapping or attempted kidnapping suspects arrested, including one victim that was rescued, there were also numerous assaults or batteries, including those against police and workers, rapes, and other violent incidents, including one that might have been stopped by police before it turned into something more serious, possibly a riot or brawl, at least one incident where police tased a suspect. There was also another card skimmer found on a self-checkout register, which is now semi-routine; they're much more common on self-checkouts than those with cashiers since there's less likely to be a witness seeing them put it in place, although presumably the cameras catch it, but if they're not monitored they don't find out about it until it's too late.

In addition to the two people killed in accidents, one that drowned when an SUV was submerged there were at least half a dozen other major chases, crashes, stolen vehicles or other automobile crimes, not counting fender benders that rarely make the News but must be much more common, and one food truck that caught on fire. There were also at least seven fires at their stores with at least five of them arson, the two remaining ones were under investigation so there's a chance they were arson too.

There were also at least five knife related crimes including three stabbings, one robbery, and one incident that was described as a terrorist threatening charge, although the suspect didn't have anything more lethal than a knife or pepper spray.

In addition to the recall which caused one death and 114 injuries, which involved a devise intended to measure glucose levels, there were more than a dozen other major recalls, with these recalls getting so common few can keep track of them, and they're only reported in a low profile manner. These recalls include food jars made by Thermos. frozen pizzas with Salmonella concerns, contaminated seasonings with Salmonella concerns, powdered milk, "Tabletop fireplaces" due to burn injuries, magnetic toys that could cause injuries or deaths if swallowed by children, squeeze toys with asbestos concerns, steam saunas that can cause burns, chocolate candy with health risks, vitamins with a Salmonella risk and dressers again because they can tip forward and hurt children. These recalls of dressers or bureaus keep happening every year, often several times per year even though they could simply tell their buyers not to order them of they're not deep enough or routinely secured to the wall, yet they choose not to do this even though it results in dozens of predictable and wasteful recalls.

Walmart lost or settled at least two lawsuits last month, which is rare, since they often use their funds to prevent any losses like the tobacco company, but one of them is only for $847 K, which is minuscule for a company this big, and the other wasn't disclosed publicly that I know of, whether there's a non-disclosure agreement or not, which may mean the settlements might have been lower than potential legal expenses. There are also several examples of revolving doors where their executives go on to become executive of other companies that are sometimes supposed to be competitors, but this typically only involves executives from the wealthy class, not middle or poor class people, and it's part of obvious efforts to rig the economy in markets that only pretend to be competitive.

For some reason a man ordered 165 "pool noodles" and they cam in 165 boxes even though several could fit in each box which is incredibly wasteful!

What are pool noodles? What purpose do they serve? Are they just another example where marketers convince consumers to buy things with no purpose?

Google AI claims they serve a practical purpose; I'm not ruling out the possibility that Google AI repeats marketing propaganda from corporations without actually thinking about it or checking facts.

Have you ever taken videos of your friends when they gulp milk at Walmart and put it on the shelf? Do kids realize when they put this on Social Media it looks like a confession and Walmart will prosecute?

Have you ever bought 'camo' pants at Walmart than after wearing them for a few days or weeks looked closer and realized they had a bunch of miniature penises on them that other people might have noticed before you, then told the internet about it so everyone would know?

How often do you see people speeding up and down grocery or department store aisles in E-bikes?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Over the past ten to fifteen years Walmart has been increasing the use of self-checkout, and this has corresponded with a steady increase in shoplifting as well as false accusations, yet they refuse to even discuss returning to the use of cashiers. What most people seem to have forgotten was that when they first did this it was on a small scale as an experiment, presumably to see if it worked before expanding it, which would actually make sense, if they slowed it down or reversed it once they saw how many problems it caused. But that's not what they did. Instead the more problems they had the more they increased use of self-checkout, often claiming that instead of hiring more cashiers again, which worked previously, they resorted to more technology and hiring more security to catch people skip scanning or at other forms of theft. This has led to massive amounts of false accusations, in addition to the real thefts, and when the thefts are real, and they get caught, they often resort to violence, so it endangers both Walmart workers and customers.

Now they're acting as if the rise of shoplifting is happening for some inexplicable reason and even asking police to help them solve this problem, as if it wasn't a problem created by their own policies, and most of the media or politicians aren't pointing out the obvious. This is resulting in a massive increase in arrests, court expenses, and prison expenses, which Walmart isn't paying for, effectively meaning we are subsidizing Walmart's high crime problems with tax money. There's no official explanation for why they're behaving so foolishly; but, since this is a for profit corporation it's not hard to speculate about the most likely reason for it, that they're increasing profits for those making the decisions. But, a large portion of the money saved by not hiring cashiers is spent on technology or security to catch thieves; and, if they had to pay the increase in police, courts and prison costs that would reduce or eliminate their savings, and they would almost certainly reverse their policies, because they wouldn't be increasing profits with self-checkout.

This doesn't even include the risk to the health of both their customers and workers when the worst thieves turn violent, in some cases possibly even shooting and killing people. Every year since 2016 has seen more than a hundred shootings at Walmart, and more often than not, this is increasing, while they ignore the causes of their crime problems. These self-checkouts are also making it easier for thieves to put "skimmers" that collect credit or debit card information from customers that enable them to use their cards illegally, but, once again, the customers are stuck with the tab, not Walmart, so they're doing little or nothing to stop this, even though it's a direct result of their bad policies. And furthermore, courts have ruled that Walmart has a right to detain customers even when they have no reason to believe they're shoplifting, if they simply refuse to show receipts, as a matter of principle. At times some lawyers have claimed they need probable cause to ask to see receipts, which, if a customer goes directly from the register, sometimes even when there's a cashier, to the door they can't possibly have. So this means Walmart is under no obligation to assume their paying customers are innocent until proven guilty, which should raise major constitutional questions!

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in May 2026. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart phasing out self‑checkout at some locations, starting in Philly Pa. 05/03/2026

(NewsNation) — As Walmart prepares to remodel hundreds of its stores nationwide, at least one location will eliminate self‑checkout entirely.

One of Walmart’s five locations in Philadelphia will transition back to a cashier‑led checkout model. A company spokesperson told The Philadelphia Inquirer the change followed a review of how customers shop at that store.

“These changes are guided by feedback from associates and customers, local shopping patterns, and the needs of the business in each community,” the spokesperson said, adding the goal is to “improve the checkout experience and enable associates to provide more personalized customer service.”

Theft concerns drive changes in checkout strategy.

The move comes as several major retailers — including Target, Dollar General and Five Below — have scaled back self‑checkout options, with some pointing to high rates of theft as a factor. Complete article

Walmart told me to donate my broken refrigerator — then things got strange 05/07/2026

When Howard Friedman’s new refrigerator stops cooling, he expects a simple replacement. After all, he had bought it from Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers. Instead, there’s a confusing chain of calls, emails, and return labels — and a surprising suggestion that he should “just donate” the appliance to charity. How can he resolve this mess?

Question

I bought a beverage refrigerator from Walmart a month ago. The first unit didn’t get cold, and when I called Walmart, the representative said that others had the same problem and arranged a return. He also suggested I buy a replacement refrigerator from Walmart, which I did.

The second one came from a company called Ca’Lefort. It didn’t work, either. When I tried to return it, a representative first agreed to take it back and scheduled a FedEx pickup. The item was picked up — and then returned to my porch a few days later.

A different Ca’Lefort representative told me that the first representative had made a mistake and that I couldn’t return the refrigerator because it wasn’t in the original box. She offered me 50 percent off a replacement. I refused.

When I called Walmart again, a representative said I’d get a full refund and should donate the fridge to charity. But the refund never showed up.

After several more calls and hours on hold, a Walmart representative apologized for all the “mistakes” and said Walmart couldn’t take the refrigerator back. Then the call dropped. Can you help me get a refund for the refrigerator? — Howard Friedman, Baltimore Complete article

Michigan Man Drops Off His Car At Walmart And Goes Shopping. Then He Comes Back—And Catches A Worker In A Lie: 'Really?' 05/07/2026

Changing a vehicle’s tire is simple enough when you have the right tools. All you need is a basic understanding of the process, a car jack, a lug wrench, a spare tire, and anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour of your time.

According to a TikTok creator, however, a Walmart Auto Care Center in New Hudson, Michigan, couldn’t complete the task.

The video, which was viewed over 5,882 times, was posted by user @arcoman86.

What Went Wrong During A Tire Installation At Walmart?

@arcoman86 explains he dropped his GMC Sierra off at the Walmart auto care center, where staff told him he’d be able to pick it up after he finished his shopping.

“I go shopping, come out, and they're like, ‘Sir, we can't get your tire off,’” the man recounts. “None of the lug nuts are coming off.”

He asks, “Really?” as he takes a lug wrench to several of the lug nuts on his tire, demonstrating that they can, in fact, loosen.

He adds in the caption, “Lesson learned not to buy tires from Walmart.” Complete article

Walmart shopper alleges sale price racket in stores — claiming video proves it: ‘We be getting scammed’ 05/07/2026

Walmart’s getting slammed for an alleged price tag scam.

Eagle-eyed shoppers are side-eyeing the multinational retailer amid viral claims it’s sneakily jacking up the costs of “clearance” items, tricking customers into paying more for products believed to be on sale.

“Check your local Walmart because we be getting scammed,” urged TikTok user Austin Adams while perusing the home goods section of his local store. “We’re getting robbed blind.”

Capturing video receipts of the suspected deceit, Adams peeled back the yellow clearance tag of a 16-foot Hyper Tough extension cord priced at $16.48. Upon peeking behind the label, he revealed the equipment’s original cost, $15.88.

Adams uncovered the same mislabeling on a different extension cord, marked with a clearance sticker price of $23.92, which was originally $22.97. Complete article

Woman Needs Oil Change. Then She Goes To Walmart Instead Of The Dealership: 'That $32 Might Cost You Someday' 05/08/2026

While an oil change is routine maintenance that may at times feel inconsequential, it’s in fact pretty essential to the engine’s health and performance overall.

When done incorrectly, it can lead to all kinds of major engine damage and costly repairs down the line.

That may be part of the reason why, when a woman posted on TikTok about taking her car to Walmart for an oil change, commenters were alarmed and advised against it.

The video, which was viewed over 422,100 times, was posted by TikTok creator Meelah (@meelahsaved_).

“Me getting a Oil Change at Walmart instead of my dealership cs it's $32 cheaper,” she wrote in the clip’s text overlay.

CRIME BUSTER Walmart confirms ‘automatic’ anti theft measure before shoppers even enter their stores – as new systems installed 05/11/2026

WALMART shoppers could be screened by an “automatic” anti-theft system before they even step inside stores.

New Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras have now been installed near a store in Nevada as part of a crackdown on crime.

The Churchill County Sherriff’s Office said the ALPR cameras capture images of license plates on vehicles traveling on public roads.

The system then automatically checks plates against law enforcement databases linked to criminal activity including Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts, stolen vehicles, missing persons cases and wanted suspects.

Authorities said the technology “helps officers quickly identify vehicles connected to crimes, improving response times and public safety.”

The Sherriff’s office stressed the cameras only capture “license plate numbers and basic vehicle information” and are used “strictly for legitimate law enforcement purposes”. Complete article

Walmart settles lawsuit accusing them of tipping scales in their favor 05/16/2026

My son likes to watch Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts. One of the fighters he roots for is Daniel Cormier. In 2017, prior to UFC 210 held in Buffalo, New York, Cormier stripped naked and stepped on the scale for his weigh-in. The UFC light-heavyweight champion weighed in at 206.2 pounds, 1.2 pounds over the limit.

Cormier immediately walked backstage and emerged two minutes later for a second attempt, which is allowed under New York State Athletic Commission rules. Miraculously, he weighed exactly 205 pounds. Spectators accused him of manipulating his weight by pressing down on the towel that was being used to shield his naked body to alleviate some pressure on the scale. The move went unnoticed by the commission.

Like Cormier, Walmart has recently been accused of tipping the scales in their favor as well.

Four counties in California filed a consumer protection lawsuit in the Santa Clara County against the Arkansas-based company. The suit accuses the grocery chain of selling products, such as produce, baked goods and other prepared items with less weight than shown on the label. It also alleges Walmart unlawfully charged customers prices higher than their lowest advertised or posted price. Complete article

Salmonella fears prompt recall of seasoning sold at Walmart stores nationwide 05/16/2026

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Federal health officials report that a company is recalling a seasoning product sold nationwide at Walmart stores as it may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday that Blackstone Products, based in Utah, is voluntarily recalling some lots of its “Blackstone Parmesan Ranch” products. The company says the products contain powdered milk that was recalled earlier this year because of possible salmonella contamination, posing a health risk to people who purchased the seasoning.

The FDA says salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or older adults and those who have weakened immune systems. Salmonella can cause people to display symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella can cause more serious health issues such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis. Complete article

The price match policy has several nuances, so shoppers should be sure to read the fine print carefully.

Walmart first notes on its website that its price matching rules differ between its brick-and-mortar stores and its website.

For items bought at a Walmart store in the US, the company will match the price of the identical item advertised on Walmart.com.

However, there are a number of conditions and limitations that apply.

For example, Walmart states that shoppers must inform workers of the price at the time of checkout and that the identical item must be currently in-stock and available to buy online when a customer requests a price match. Complete article

Walmart forced to ban workers under 18 under federal labor law as summer job season nears 05/20/2026

Walmart — long seen as a common starting place for American teens to get their feet wet in the workforce — is being forced to crack down on a no-workers-under-18 rule in several stores, due to standards set by the US Department of Labor under the Fair Labor Standards Act that ban teens from operating or cleaning dangerous equipment, according to The Sun.

Under the regulations, kids under 18 can’t operate or even clean power-driven meat slicers, saws or meat choppers in store delis. It’s a major snag for the megachain, which offers customers access to fully stocked deli counters — including sliced meats, cheeses and hot foods — at nearly all of its Supercenters.
