Walmart Crime Report December 2021

Walmart had at least ten more shootings in December of 2021, which is fewer than they've had during the holidays in years, but three of them were fatal, with two of those fatal shootings cops killing armed suspects. This may be a welcome reduction in the amount of shootings, which I hope is the case; however, another possibility is that the media is simply not reporting them as reliably as they used to. There's a growing amount of evidence to indicate this is a real possibility, including one article this month that had Walmart's name removed from the headlines, another article this month that included a shooting, which wasn't mentioned in the headlines, and numerous other high profile stories that aren't being reported as promptly as they used to be, even including a death from the middle of last month which wasn't reported in the media until after New Years, almost three weeks after it happened. One more of the shootings allegedly involved a person firing at the police, but they detained him without killing him. At least two of the shootings involved carjackings, and another was an accident.

In addition to the three people killed in shootings another two people were found dead in their cars, presumably from natural causes, another two people were killed in accidents including a person who was killed when a car crashed into the store, and a seventh man was killed as a result of s self inflicted knife wound, which is a very unusual way of committing suicide. In the previous months of the year Walmart had at least fourteen shootings and eight deaths in January 2021; twelve shootings and eight deaths in February; eight shootings and six deaths in March; ten shootings and five deaths in April; nineteen shootings and seven or eight deaths in May; twelve shootings and nine deaths in June; eleven or twelve shootings and nine deaths in July; twelve shootings and fourteen deaths in August; eight shootings and eight deaths in September; six shootings and six deaths in October; sixteen shootings and seven deaths in November; and another ten shootings from December and eight deaths, bringing the total to one-hundred-thirty-eight or nine shootings and ninety-six or seven deaths. This is slightly fewer shootings than last year, and more than a dozen fewer than 2019, which was an all-time record, far more than any previous year, and when they had the El Paso shooting, that year was also the record number of deaths, by a large amount.

In addition to the ten shootings last month, there were more than a dozen other gun related crimes, not counting those getting little or no media attention, including several armed robberies, at least one more carjacking that didn't involve any shootings, several arguments, including a couple road rage incidents and at least one former employee that returned to the store armed, although that didn't go any further. Walmart has an enormous problem with many angry customers or former employees and many of them in the past have opened fire because of their complaints, legitimate or not. Some of the complaints against Walmart may have been partially, although most would agree an armed response is not justified; which is all the more reason to address legitimate complaints by people that don't go to bizarre extremes. These complaints are far more common that those going to extremes, although they get little or no media coverage.

After Christmas Walmart began closing dozens of stores across the country because of several alleged COVID outbreaks, for cleaning. However, the timing clearly indicates they may have waited until the peal shopping days were over, which implies they might be putting profits ahead of health, or it's a very convenient coincidence.

Walmart had a series of thefts from the Salvation Army on their premises, mostly money from their kettles, but there was also a theft of a van full of toys; they also had a robbery where the victim was pepper sprayed, another robber using a stun gun, someone arrested for sexual assault, an incident where customers intervened to stop child abuse, a pipe bomb that was found and removed, although it's unclear whether it was ever a threat, most of them don't work.

Another police officer was caught shoplifting multiple times at Walmart, while on duty, and was charged promptly, as usual. Police Unions routinely come to the defense of police that kill working class people, even if there's no justification for it, but they never speak out when they get caught shoplifting, showing a brazen double standard which keeps repeating itself. There was also a large online debate about whether people that see poor people stealing food or baby formula should report it or not, with many people arguing that they shouldn't, while others argue that stealing is always wrong, but those people rarely complain about a rigged economy of the fact that wealthy people aren't held accountable for much more extensive fraud. There was also a report about a 97 year old woman that had been working at Walmart for twenty years was retiring as if it's a great thing, without asking why she had to work there starting after she really should have retired. If we had a reasonable economic system this wouldn't be necessary!

In addition to the fatal car crashes into Walmart which killed two and one of them also injured two, and the stolen Salvation Army van there were over a dozen other crashes, chases, stolen vehicles, carjackings, another road rage incident, a joyride in the parking lot and a woman who had her car smashed with a bat after an argument, and who knows how many more incidents, mostly minor, that were hardly reported by the media.

They had fewer fires than usual for the first three weeks of the month, but suddenly made up for it with two fires on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and another two fires, which were both arson in the same city shortly after that, the suspect for the fist arson was arrested before the second, which means it was a different person, either a co-conspirator or a copycat. There were also half a dozen or so knife attacks, including the person that died from self-inflicted knife wounds, and several other threats, attacks, or robberies.

Walmart also had many more purse snatchings, shopliftings, including at least one where the suspect was tased, assaults, other forms of domestic violence, robberies, brawls, including one resulting in a fractured face, large scale thefts or attempted thefts and plenty more incidents that rarely get much if any media attention.

Walmart had at least another four recalls, including one for children's bathrobes that are a fire hazard, a brad nailer, salad with listeria, and a knife that is a safety hazard, plus reminders of another one for an air-freshener that killed at least two people and caused health problems for more. A woman also went on social media reporting that she suspected poultry at Walmart was contaminated, although Walmart denies this.

Walmart has also been caught spying on employees to prevent unionization efforts, and one customer who bought a watch found batteries in the box instead, and Walmart refused to account for it. Walmart routinely betrays both their customers and their employees, and the government often does nothing to help, or in other cases they make them go through slow court processes before settling with them, often for far less than they should pay.

There are several articles recently claiming that Joe Biden was a "one time foe of Walmart, or something similar to that, which is an obvious distortion, although he did speak out against Walmart during a campaign. Anyone familiar with politics knows that it's routine to criticize oligarchs during the campaign and cave to them once in office, clearly indicating they represent campaign donors not voters, who get nothing but paid propaganda during campaigns and broken promises afterwards, and not surprisingly, Biden has, of course collected his share of money from billionaires, including a Walmart heir, clearly showing he represents the donors not voters falling for propaganda. This isn't limited to Biden, of course, virtually all politicians use the same tactics, including Ohio candidate JD Vance who recently called out Walmart for slave labor even though he owns Walmart stock, and anyone familiar with his reputation must know there's little or no chance he'll stand up to Walmart once in office, assuming he wins.

Walmart is also being sued by California for improper hazardous waste disposal, and an old suit with Greenpeace has been renewed, along with several other lawsuits for discrimination, wrongful termination or other reasons. When people shop at Walmart they contribute to their legal defense fund, but they have to scrape up their own legal funds as well if they ever have a claim, and part of the reason the legal system is rigged against consumers is corporations use our money against us.

A mother also exposed Walmart for charging more for Black Dolls than for White Dolls, and Walmart is facing backlash from China for avoiding imports from Xinjiang under new U.S. law.

Young Thug, a rapper, and his fans, found out the hard way about a false internet rumor saying he would by their products in Georgia, but he didn't show up and may not have even known and his fans didn't figure it out until later.

Do you even wonder why anyone would object if a horse walks into a Walmart so his rider can by him some carrots?

One woman who might have been too embarrassed to let anyone see her buy a fingertip vibrator found out it may be even more embarrassing if she gets caught shoplifting it and having her name posted in the newspaper.

How often do you see incredibly moldy sneakers at Walmart? One TikToker let everyone know when she did.

Have you ever faced criminal charges for shooting someone with a squirt gun, or should I call it a "water bead gun?" Apparently Walmart workers and the police don't like that.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2021. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Point Pickup Delivery App Update Sows Confusion About Algorithmic Pay 11/10/2021

“This is my full time job. I depend on it. I was flabbergasted when they made this change because I love what I do."

Point Pickup, a delivery contractor used by Walmart and other major retailers, rolled out an app update that sowed confusion among drivers, some of whom say they are earning less money. This may be the result of a switch from a static pricing model to what the company's chief marketing officer said is a "dynamic market pricing technology that informs individual order pricing based on specific market conditions as they fluctuate.”

Before recent changes to the app, gig workers on the Point Pickup platform were shown a payout amount alongside their delivery offers. Tips were processed later and paid out separately.

But in recent weeks, Point Pickup drivers noticed that the company had begun to include tips in their payout amount. Now when a customer tips, Point Pickup shows something it's calling a "guaranteed minimum payout," an overall number that is inclusive of any customer tip, according to screenshots obtained by Motherboard. This change led some workers to believe that they were having their base pay supplemented by tips, because earnings have dropped since the change, they said. (DoorDash, Instacart, and Amazon Flex have also included tips in workers’ guaranteed minimum payouts, which has resulted in driver and customer backlash toward the companies.) Complete article

Biden embraces his one-time foe: Walmart 12/03/2021 (This article is obviously misleading, since it is standard opperating procedure for establishment politicians, especially presidential candidates, to blast Walmart during the campaign, then defend them once in office.)

Not so long ago, it would have been unimaginable for a Democratic president to ally himself with the retail giant. But that’s what this one has done.

Not long before he joined the 2008 campaign trail, then-Sen. Joe Biden traveled to Iowa to deliver a blistering speech attacking the nation’s largest private employer, Walmart.

“My problem with Walmart is that I don’t see any indication that they care about the fate of middle-class people,” he told the crowd that day.

Biden went on to enter the race and lose that primary. But 15 years later, he finds himself in the White House. And over the first year of his presidency, the retail giant he once lambasted has become a key ally of his administration.

“Thank you. You've been really — really cooperative,” he told Walmart CEO Doug McMillon on Monday, during a meeting with CEOs on problems with the supply chain and concerns heading into the holiday shopping season. “I can't tell you how much we appreciate it.” Complete article

Walmart salaries revealed: from up to $200,000 for an engineering role to $74 hourly rates for pharmacists 12/01/2021

Walmart pays some engineers up to $200,000 — at least in Colorado.

To determine how much Walmart pays employees, the Wall Street Journal analyzed 5,000 job offers at major companies posted in the state between August and October, after Colorado began mandating employers disclose hourly or salary compensation or range in all job postings. The state's legislators passed the law to ensure equal pay for equal work.

Though some companies stopped hiring workers in Colorado to bypass sharing salary information on job listings, corporations like Walmart started disclosing pay for certain positions. .....

As competitors like Amazon and Target adopted a minimum hourly wage of $15, Walmart has made incremental increases. In March, Walmart announced a raise for 425,000 associates that would increase pay to between $13 and $19 an hour. In September, it raised its minimum wage across the board to $12 an hour. If you bought this at Walmart, there’s an insane recall of Hart 18-Gauge 2” Brad Nailers you need to see 12/10/2021

If you were planning on doing any construction work involving using nailers, you might want to think twice before proceeding. That’s because specific models of Hart nailers available exclusively at Walmart pose a severe risk of injury. It’s not necessarily the person handling the device who risks harming themselves. The Hart 18-Gauge 2” Brad Nailers subject to recall have a component problem that can cause malfunctions, triggering the accidental discharge of nails.

In other words, the nail guns in this recall can randomly shoot nails on their own, without any notice. That’s insanely dangerous, of course. This is a serious recall and it’s imperative that anyone with an impacted Hart Nailer gun stop using it at once. Complete article

'They Were Spying On Us': Amazon, Walmart, Use Surveillance Technology to Bust Unions 12/13/2021

This story is co-published with Capital & Main

Last January, at the height of the pandemic, an elderly housekeeper at a former hotel in Long Beach, California, that was being used to quarantine people with COVID-19, tested positive for the virus and died. That prompted the union that represents hotel workers in Southern California to file a complaint with the state and the National Labor Relations Board alleging that the hotel failed to follow pandemic safety protocols. Hotel workers met regularly to discuss their health, the safety situation and to strategize about how to address their complaints with the company, Holliday's Helping Hands, which had been contracted by Los Angeles County to run the facility.

During a Zoom call set up by union representatives and employees who had organized a worker organizing committee, "We noticed that managers of the company had busted into the meeting—they had crashed our Zoom call," recalls Lorena Lopez, a director of organizing with UNITE HERE Local 11. "Workers started to get very nervous and shut down their cameras so they wouldn't be recognized. I was running the meeting and asked everyone to ID themselves. But the company people refused." During the meeting, a worker on the cleaning crew had volunteered to be the spokesperson for the group. According to Lopez, this worker was confronted by management the next day and pressured to quit.

"They were spying on us—and it was easy to do via Zoom," she says. Under a settlement agreement with the NLRB, the company agreed to post flyers informing employers of their right to unionize and pledged not to ask them about organizing efforts and not to surveil their Zoom meetings. A lawyer for the company did not return requests for comment. Complete article

29 Things You Should Never Buy at Walmart 12/13/2021

Over 59 years, Walmart Inc. has gone from one humble discount store in Bentonville, Arkansas, to a $555-billion-a-year retail behemoth. By comparison, the world’s largest retailer beats mighty Amazon Inc. in annual global retail sales by more than $200 billion.

Walmart’s strategy has always been an aggressive pursuit of low prices. And today, its massive logistics and supply chain networks and management strategies are studied at business management schools, where the company is used to explain important concepts and also to address related social issues, such as the company’s market dominance and reliance on cheap imported goods. (You might be surprised at how many people work at Walmart in each state and what they are paid.)

For the consumer, Walmart’s focus on eye-catching bargain-basement prices is a powerful draw. But this aggressive pricing strategy has its faults. Economies of scale can only go so far in driving down prices before they begin to affect the quality and selection of products. (That said, large-scale retail operations do sometimes sell top-flight products at good prices. Click here to see some surprisingly good Costco, Walmart, and Target products.) 1. Televisions

Truck and trailer stolen from Tampa Fla. recovered at NE Walmart 12/14/2021

Ohio candidate J.D. Vance calls out Walmart for "slave labor” — and heavily invests in its stock 12/17/2021

Ohio Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance has accused Walmart of using "slave labor" to make cheap products that undermine American jobs. But his latest personal financial disclosure shows he owns at least $50,000 in Walmart stock.

Vance, who made a fortune as a venture capitalist before writing the best-selling book "Hillbilly Elegy," submitted his personal financial disclosure last month after missing the original filing deadline. It indicates that he owns between $50,000 and $100,000 in Walmart stock. (Such disclosure forms list ranges, rather than precise amounts.)

Vance also participated in a 2017 "fireside chat" with Walmart executive Daniel Eckert to discuss business issues as well as the "populist movement" that "propelled Donald Trump into the presidency."

Now that he is seeking the Republican nomination for an open Ohio Senate seat — and hoping to land former President Donald Trump's endorsement — Vance has taken to criticizing the company and its reliance on China, which has become a popular GOP target. Complete article

Greenpeace and Walmart continue renewed legal battle 12/15/2021

A lawsuit alleging Walmart deceives customers about recyclability of its packaging has been reopened. Attorneys for Greenpeace expect their complaint, which was previously dismissed by a federal judge, will be allowed to move forward in its amended form.

Greenpeace initially filed suit against Walmart in December 2020, arguing that the company falsely promotes certain packaging materials as “recyclable.” The complaint, filed in California’s Alameda County Superior Court, focused on Walmart’s private label packaging made from plastic Nos. 3-7, plastic shrink sleeves, or unidentified plastic.

Greenpeace took issue with the products’ How2Recycle labels, which advise consumers about recycling options for various plastic packaging materials. For the Walmart packaging that the lawsuit focuses on, the labels either identify the material as widely recyclable with certain instructions, or they advise the consumer to check local recycling rules. Walmart, Intel face backlash in China for avoiding imports from Xinjiang under new U.S. law 12/28/2021

America’s largest companies are already facing a backlash from the passage of a new U.S. law that severely restricts imports from the Xinjiang region in China, where the U.S. government and human rights advocates say businesses use forced labor to produce essential building blocks of the modern global economy, like cotton-based fabrics and silicon.

Walmart Inc. WMT, 0.07%, the world’s largest retailer, is the latest in a series of U.S. firms that have been criticized on Chinese social media amid pressure under the new law to rid its shelves of products that have been made with parts from the Muslim-majority region, according to a Monday report in the Wall Street Journal.

A user of Weibo accused the company of “eating China’s rice, yet slapping our face,” and others said they would cancel their Sam’s Club membership, according to the report. China’s Communist Youth League urged the public to engage in further Walmart boycotts, while a state newspaper ran a story Friday on public anger over the company removing Xinxiang-sourced goods from its Chinese website.
