Walmart Crime Report June 2021

Walmart had at least a dozen shootings in June of 2021, including three fatal ones, one of these fatal shootings, in New York, was classified as a mass shooting since three more people were shot in addition to the one that died, there were at least six more people injured in five of the other non-fatal shootings as well, some seriously so the death toll could rise. One of the other fatal shootings was a murder suspect that was killed by police in North Carolina.

Walmart had at least five more gun related crimes or false alarms about active shooters, when there were none. In addition to the three people killed in shootings there were also five bodies found on the premises and one more person killed in a car accident, bringing the total dead to at least nine, which could rise if one or more of the series injuries leads to more deaths. The bodies routinely found on their premises are usually considered non-suspicious or no foul play; however, as a society we should wonder why this happens so often. There's little doubt that there are no resources for the working class or poor and the economy is rigged in favor of the rich forcing many others into desperation.

Many of Walmart's crime problems seem to be turning up much less on Google searches, and the reason seems to be incredibly obvious; ads thinly disguised as news articles, which have been around for years are getting much more common, often flooding most of the first page or two of searches if not more. Examples of these include Walmart accidentally unveiled its own bargain-priced FHD streaming stick and 4K player 06/02/2021; Walmart is practically giving away this ultra-slim Gateway laptop 06/09/2021 and when Walmart does something like come up with insulin that may be a fraction of what the drug companies are charging, or other similar new products, it often goes viral filling out two or three pages of Google searches, pushing everything else further back or making them virtually impossible to find.

Even major crimes like shootings, which almost always used to show up on the first page of a Google search, are now routinely pushed back to at least the second or third page if not further, sometimes the eighth or ninth page, when they're breaking news. Most serious crime is still as common if not more common than it was before; however, if there are many not turning up on searches it may be much worse. There's no hard evidence, that I know of to prove some form of collusion, but Walmart is increasing their partnerships with many companies, including media outlets that sell them ads and even Google as indicated here, Walmart partners with Google for voice-assisted grocery shopping 04/02/2019 They obviously don't indicate that partnerships like this with Google or many other companies include unethical treatment including suppressing reports of their high crime problem; however, there have been indications that Walmart has tried to do this in the past and if there wasn't a wink and nod quid quo pro or some other conflict of interest, it's hard to imagine why media companies and Google searches would increase ads while burying their crime problems.

Several of there policies are clearly contributing to their high crime problems, including store design, corner cutting, and perhaps most obvious of all, their relentless efforts to increase self-check-out, even though there's an enormous amount of evidence showing that in addition to increasing crime, it's also angering many customers. In some cases there have been people that made major scenes when they were outraged by lack of cashiers, often even getting arrested at tax payer expense, and Walmart still doesn't respond to the will of the people. I don't know if anyone has done a study to find out if they're eliminating all of their cashiers at many stores, starting as tests, but now growing across the country, primarily at stores where people have no other place to shop. In my area there is still at least one good grocery store that competes against Walmart, and they get much more grocery business; however, the only department stores in the area are now much more expensive.

Clearly the claim that we have a competitive free enterprise market is no longer true; the market is now an oligarchy where everything is divided up among large corporations with only the illusion of competition; which is why we should demand either massive regulation, breaking up the oligarchs, or perhaps the best idea is nationalization of large corporations, since they dominated the market as a result of corruption and political connections with tax payer subsidies. In one store in Louisiana many customers expressed their outrage by all agreeing to line up at the register with a cashier refusing to use the self-checkout. This might work if Walmart cared about input from customers, but with an oligarchy system where millions of people have no other place to shop they may not care, or at best, they will be incredibly slow to give a modest amount of ground.

Meanwhile, a large portion of the additional cost for their high crime problems is paid for by tax-payers who finance police, courts and prisons. If Walmart had to pay these costs it would almost certainly make the difference between in an increase in profits or a loss in profits and cashiers would come back immediately!

Walmart continues to have numerous major assaults every month including one where a customer was hit in the face with a shovel, and at least four or five other assaults, a couple on employees confronting shoplifters, and in addition to that someone armed with a baseball bat trying to hide at Walmart, a robbery of an elderly man, and another person threatening a woman with a crossbow. However, there was one incident which could have turned violent, but Walmart employees and EMTs recognized they had a teen with special needs and calmed him down without violence or even arresting him when the police arrived.

They had an incident where one person blew white power, which may have been an irritant, or created an anthrax scare or something, even if it was harmless, while someone else caught it on camera, possibly as a video prank, another store had a false alarm about a hostage situation and a few more mass larcenies including a couple of women stealing a $100K in several states; another group stole thousands of dollars worth of stuff and sold it on the national black market, with some sold overseas. There lax security and corner cutting makes this much easier for organizations that learn the loopholes, at least temporarily and taxpayers foot the bill for court and prison costs.

Another police officer was caught stealing almost five hundred dollars worth of merchandise. This is the third or fourth month in a row with at least one police officer getting caught stealing from Walmart, a couple months ago there were three cops caught in the same month. As usual, when police get caught stealing from Walmart they're fired immediately, and their unions raise no objections; if on the other hand the kill unarmed civilians, often even innocent civilians, their unions routinely fight tooth and nail to ensure they're not punished, and unless there's massive protests like the George Floyd death, they almost always succeed!

When it comes to holding poor people accountable, it's a totally different story; even when they're forced into desperation like a couple that were arrested when their three children were found in desperate circumstances in the parking lot. This couple may not be perfect, but we have an economic system that is driving millions into poverty by rigging it in favor of the wealthy. There are also studies showing that helping the homeless, poor or others with emotional problems, is actually less expensive than court activities that don't solve social problems at all. They also had a separate incident where a minority was told to take off a shirt he was trying on before buying and get out of the store even though there was no reason to believe he was even thinking about stealing it; many white people, including me, never worry about trying on a shirt or jacket before buying it.

There were at least nine major fires at Walmart last month including several arsons, possibly serial arsons. Three of them set in two Mississippi stores may have been set by the same people that set several more in Alabama last month. The FBI offered rewards for their capture and one report implied they might be doing this nationwide, although this doesn't appear to be true. However, there were other unrelated arsons in other parts of the country, including one in Nevada that may have also been related to other arsons in previous months, but there's no connection between the arsonists. There just happens to be a trend of people setting fires across the country.

There were also at least seven major crashes, including the fatal one mentioned above, chases, stolen cars, or carjackings at Walmart. This is actually a very low number, but there are almost certainly many more that haven't been widely reported, especially with ads burying the real news stories. There were also at least five knife attacks including two stabbings, one related to a carjacking. This is also lower than usual, assuming more weren't buried under growing number of ads disguised as news.

In addition to the attacks on customers and employees there were also at least a couple attacks on police officers. There are also many laws passed in various states that are designed to make petty crimes look more like felonies, including efforts to turn shoplifting's into burglaries or felony shoplifting when they do it repeatedly. Most people probably don't think shoplifting should be excused, but rigging the economy in a manner designed to drive many people to desperation is even more inexcusable. This is virtual entrapment in many cases; and our government is constantly trying to make many white collar crimes legal so the rich can legally steal from the poor, while the poor are prosecuted for incredibly petty reasons, often costing taxpayers hundreds if not thousands of dollars, if they respond in kind, usually on a much smaller scale.

In addition to a clown blowing white powder in people's faces and another person threatening a woman with a crossbow, they also had a half naked woman going on a rampage and taking an ax out of it's packaging to try to attack people.

A brawl broke out by the registers in a Colorado store, when a customer spit on a worker and it escalated from there.

One of their infamous yellow poles in Maine lured another victim to hitting it and ruining their car. Somehow this has become semi-routine at that store.

And compared to some of these wild people a much more polite deer decided to go shopping at a Wisconsin store, but for one reason another, even though this deer behaved much better than many customers an employee tackled her and wouldn't let the deer finish her shopping!

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in June 2021. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Infamous Auburn Me. Walmart Yellow Pole Claims Yet Another Victim 06/01/2021

You know you live in Maine when people across the state know that there's an 'infamous' yellow pole in the parking lot of a Walmart in Auburn. There have been so many accidents with the pole in a short amount of time, there probably should be a thorough investigation into whether this pole has a magnetic presence. Walmart has tried different tactics in hopes of deterring drivers from smashing into poles in the parking lot and so far, they haven't worked. How do we know? Well, you get one guess on what happened this past weekend.

Shared on Facebook in the Lewiston Rocks group by Tia Roy, yet another car met its fate over the holiday weekend after a collision with a yellow pole. Some commenters mentioned that this may not even be THE yellow pole, meaning that every yellow pole in the Auburn, Maine Walmart parking lot is likely cursed. As frustrating as this has been for drivers, it's been equally frustrating for Walmart who has to repair and replace poles at a rate that is almost comical.

So after caution tape, reflectors and orange cones didn't get the job done, Walmart is willing to try anything at this point to get people to stop playing demolition derby with inanimate objects. Shared on Facebook by Fast Lane, at least one of the damaged poles has been painted green. Perhaps the color change will help drivers identify the pole while turning at a better rate than the yellow one. It can't be any worse, right? Complete article

Walmart workers ‘feared for their lives’ due to Covid, executives told 06/02/2021

Social justice campaigner the Rev William Barber II told Walmart executives its workers “feared for their lives every day” during the Covid-19 pandemic and urged the board to create a worker advisory council at the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting on Wednesday.

Shareholders at the virtual meeting voted on issues including executive compensation and on whether to create a pandemic workforce advisory council, which would give workers at the country’s largest private employer a voice in corporate decisions. Shareholders voted against creating the council, according to preliminary vote results announced in the meeting.

“There are hundreds of your workers who are not alive today, because of this vicious coronavirus that was allowed to spread through your stores, largely in secret, as your workers feared for their lives every day,” Barber said, while presenting the proposal in a pre-recorded statement. Family finds Walmart theft suspect dead under their deck, Syracuse Utah detective says 06/03/2021

SYRACUSE, Utah (KUTV) — Children playing in their Syracuse, Utah backyard made a disturbing discovery this Saturday: the body of a dead man.

Detectives determined the deceased was one of two suspects in a theft at the city's Walmart several days earlier, said Det. Erin Behm with Syracuse Police.

Police arrived at the Walmart on May 24, responding to the theft report, and saw two men run from the store and jump a nearby fence, Behm said. They didn't chase the suspects, and searched the nearby neighborhood unsuccessfully.

A lead in the case came on Saturday with the call from parents reporting their children discovered a dead man under their deck in the Canterbury Estates neighborhood north of Walmart. Behm said the man matched the description of one of the suspects.

He's since been identified as 28-year-old Levi Anderson. Behm said there were no obvious signs of trauma on his body, and he was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Complete article

Oconee County blotter: Fight erupts outside Walmart; man speeds 104 mph to see fiancée 05/28/2021

ANGRY CYCLIST: On May 17, Deputy Lex Ogan was dispatched to the parking lot of Walmart shortly before 7 p.m., where a fight broke out after a road-rage incident that began when a pickup, driven by a 20-year-old Royston woman, turned toward Walmart in front of a man driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The cyclist revved the engine as he began tailgating the pickup. He called the woman a derogatory name before driving off. The pickup parked and the woman’s 23-year-old brother exited and had bent over to tie a shoelace when a white SUV pulled up. The driver got out, went over to the brother and punched him in the eye and forehead.

As the fight progressed, others arrived — including an off-duty Walton County sheriff’s deputy — and broke up the fight. The man who arrived in the SUV turned out to be the Harley driver. The Walton deputy saw the unprovoked attack, as did the store’s loss-prevention officer, who was outside taking a break. Complete article

St. Louis man arrested after tussling with Arnold Police officer in Missouri Walmart 06/06/2021

Arnold Police arrested a 48-year-old St. Louis man following a brief physical altercation with an officer in Walmart. The officer confronted the man at the store, 2201 Michigan Ave., because he allegedly tried to steal $2,208 worth of items, authorities reported.

A store loss prevention officer called Arnold Police and reported that the suspect had previously been told not to come back to the store again, but on April 28, he returned and allegedly filled a cart with items and was trying to leave without paying for them. The officer arrived and allegedly saw the man push the cart past a self-checkout lane without paying for the items, the report said.

The officer told the suspect he needed to pay for the merchandise, but the man reportedly refused and got into an argument with the officer. During the argument, the man allegedly said he was not going to go to jail, according to the report.

Then, the man tried to leave the store, and he and the officer tussled. Afterward, the suspect said he had recently broken his leg and couldn’t go to jail, the report said. Complete article

White Woman Loses Job at an Ohio Walmart After Falsely Accusing a Black Woman of Stealing at Self-Checkout, Company Issues Apology 06/0/2021

An Ohio Walmart employee has been fired after a Black woman claimed that she was racially profiled.

Anternitia O’Neal told local news outlet Fox19 that she was shopping for groceries — minor items such as juice, cereal, and lotion — at the Walmart on 10240 Colerain Ave in Cincinnati when she claimed she was accused of stealing on May 18. Once she had collected all her items, O’Neal says she went through the self-checkout station to pay for her stuff, and when she wrapped up that process that’s when the now-former Walmart employee, who is white, approached her and accused her of stealing, saying some now-bagged items in O’Neal’s cart had not been scanned.

A confrontation ensued and O’Neal requested the employee get security and review the video. Another Walmart employee approached the scene in an attempt to get an understanding of what transpired before she too left to view the security footage.

The Black woman said she pleaded with the employee several times, explaining that she had paid for all her items. “I just feel that words can’t even explain how belittled they made me feel, less of a human, and that’s unfair,” she told reporters. O’Neal recorded parts of the incident and shared it on her Facebook Live feed. Complete article

Walmart’s free phones for employees raise privacy concerns, experts say 06/08/2021

Digital privacy experts are raising red flags about Walmart’s plans to give 740,000 employees free smartphones that the company says will improve worker productivity without collecting personal data.

Walmart said Thursday that it planned to give nearly half its US employees free Samsung Galaxy phones by the end of the year. Employees will use the phones to access the “Me@Walmart” app, which will allow them to clock in, manage shifts and communicate with supervisors.

Employees will also be allowed to take the phones home for personal use.

But Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Center of Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution, had some blunt advice for Walmart workers: “Turn down the phone.”

“Employees should realize when they’re using company provided phones, the company can engage in surveillance on what they do on that phone,” West told The Post. “That can include a wide range of personal, financial and social interactions. Basically everything you do on that phone can be subject to surveillance.” Complete article

Woman sues Kansas City Missouri area Walmart, alleging negligence after a fire log fell on her 06/10/2021

A woman who claims a fire log fell from a shelf and gave her a concussion has filed a lawsuit against a Walmart in Lee’s Summit.

Patricia Michaels said she was shopping at the Walmart at 1000 N.E. Sam Walton Lane on Oct. 13, 2018, when she attempted to pull a fire log from a box on the upper shelf, according to court documents. The log fell and allegedly struck her in the head, neck and shoulder.

The store’s negligence caused Michaels to have a concussion and she has had to pay medical expenses, the lawsuit said. The store displayed the fire logs on a shelf that required customers to reach over their head and stocked weighted items in a box which created a hazard for customers attempting to access them, the lawsuit said. Walmart Wins Motion To Dismiss In Opioids Case 06/10/2021

Attached is a link to an interesting unanimous panel decision from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in an opioids case. This is the very same court that would hear appeals from cases from decisions by Judge Dan Polster, Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Judge Polster, it will be recalled, has been selected by a federal judicial panel to preside over more than 200 consolidated prescription opioid-related lawsuits in multi-district litigation (MDL).

In the instant case, the plaintiff (a pharmacist working at Walmart WMT +0.6%) sued that company and others under the federal False Claims Act (FCA). The claim is that this pharmacist received large numbers of heavy opiate prescriptions written by the same doctor. Walmart allegedly filled these prescriptions, whose small copay indicated to the plaintiff that Walmart was obtaining Medicare and/or Medicaid reimbursement. The plaintiff believed these prescriptions to be fraudulent (both because of their number and because of the high dosage) and thus that the federal reimbursement to Walmart was fraudulent. He notified his employer of his decision to file his complaint, and claims he was fired as a result (adding a retaliation count to his suit).

Typically in such cases, the federal government intervenes to support the claim of alleged fraud and the claimant (here, the pharmacist) receives a reward for his initiative. Here, though, the government expressly declined to intervene, so the pharmacist persevered alone. But Walmart and the other defendants demurred (that is, claimed that the plaintiff’s suit did not state a cause of action) and won at trial. A unanimous Circuit Court panel here confirmed.

The reasoning is interesting and potentially applicable to Judge Polster’s MDL. The panel held that the tiny amount ($1 or $2) paid by patients for each prescription was no proof that the federal government had expended any money at all, or even that any demand for federal payment had ever been made. It also held that the mere fact that doses were high was no evidence at all that they were medically “too” high. It held that the mere fact the plaintiff was discharged in no way established any causation with his FCA claim. Finally, it held that the federal government’s decision not to intervene in the case demonstrated that it too found the allegations lacking. Essentially, the panel wondered how Walmart could believe the prescriptions to be fraudulent when the government itself clearly doesn’t think so. Complete article

Officer noted she used a wall to support herself, spoke in a slow and slurred manner with varied cognition, and had glassy eyes as justification for the additional public intoxication charge. Walmart to pay out over sexual harassment case at Geneva NY store 06/17/2021

GENEVA — Walmart has settled a sexual harassment case at its Geneva store after the Equal Opportunity Commission accused the company of allowing a male associate to sexually harass female co-workers for years with management taking no action to stop it. The woman ultimately resigned from her job.

Walmart Stores East LP will pay $410,000 and provide workplace anti-sex bias training to settle the EEOC suit, filed in September 2019.

The EEOC said a three-year consent decree settling the suit, entered by U.S. District Judge Charles Siragusa, provides for $175,000 in monetary damages for a woman who was forced to resign and $235,000 for a class of victims. The decree orders Walmart to prevent hostile work environments based on sex. And it requires training for employees at Walmart’s Geneva store “to prevent future harassment and to ensure that workers understand their right to be free from sexual harassment on the job, and also requires targeted one-on-one training for the supervisor who had been the Geneva store manager at the time. The decree further requires Walmart to provide periodic reports to the EEOC regarding any future allegations of sexual harassment.” Complete article

Walmart 'Karen' Tells Boy 'Get Out My Store' After Accusing Him of Stealing 06/18/2021

A Walmart customer has shared the moment a "Karen" worker ordered him to leave the store, after accusing him of shoplifting while trying a shirt on.

TikTok user @uglahnose posted the clip 14 hours ago, and it has gained over 2 million views.

"I was trying a shirt on at Walmart and Karen thought I was stealing," he wrote on screen.

In the video, the boy can be seen trying on a shirt in the clothing section, filming himself to see what it looked like.

"Take that shirt off and put your shirt back on and get steppin'," said a woman as she approached the customer.

Clearly confused by the order, the boy looked over at her. "That's a nice shirt. Take it off, put your shirt back on and get out of my store," she continued.

"What are you talking about? I'm not even trying to steal, I'm just trying it on," he responded. Complete article

Cashiers Appear To Be Disappearing at Walmart Across New York 06/14/2021

Residents are complaining they can't find a cashier to help checkout at Walmart.

A Facebook post in the Dutchess County Moms Facebook page claimed there wasn't a single cashier working at the Fishkill Walmart Wednesday night. If a customer wanted to checkout, they would have to use the self-checkout line.

"I noticed half the store is self-checkout now." the post states. "One of the help said 'no one wants to work.'"

It's unclear why cashiers appear to be disappearing at some local Walmarts. Some commentators said it could be due to the pandemic, wages or call-outs.

Other Hudson Valley residents tell us they have recently noticed little to no cashiers working at other Walmarts in the region. Walmart has locations in Newburgh, Monroe, Middletown, Mohegan Lake, Suffern and Naponoch. Complete article

Mexico Walmart not Allowing Grocery Baggers Over 60 to Return to Work 06/18/2021

The decades-old practice of allowing elderly people in Mexico to earn wages as grocery store baggers has come to an end, according to Walmart de Mexico, the country's largest retailer.

Walmart de Mexico announced in a statement that the coronavirus pandemic and changing consumer habits have forced the chain to do away with grocery baggers over 60. They were expected to return to stores last month amid easing COVID-19 restrictions, but the retailer said in a statement that those plans have been scrapped, the Associated Press reported.

Walmart de Mexico said Mexico City's ban on plastic bags and the pandemic meant customers no longer want other people touching their groceries. Complete article

Walmart loses attempt to slash property tax assessment by 60% in Adams County Colorado 06/18/2021

The Court of Appeals has rejected an attempt by Walmart to slash the tax valuation of its equipment by 60% for three Adams County stores, as a panel of judges on Thursday determined the county assessor had acted correctly in concluding the big box company was not facing a "retail apocalypse."

Walmart based its appeal on the idea that increased online commerce is forcing traditional stores to close down, saturating the market with secondhand store property — shelving, display racks, tools, forklifts, refrigeration units and the like. These items, known as business personal property, therefore face "economic obsolescence" in addition to physical wear and tear, given that a glut in the aftermarket lowers its price.

"With the surge of e-commerce, traditional brick-and-mortar retailers are struggling to stay alive," Brian Huebsch, an attorney for Walmart, argued in court filings. "Commentators identify this as the 'Retail Apocalypse.'" Complete article

Walmart CEO may face deposition in opioid epidemic lawsuit 06/19/2021

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon may face deposition as part of the discovery phase of a multi-state lawsuit targeting the manufacturers and distributors of pharmaceutical opioids.

The suit, brought by several thousand U.S. tribal plaintiffs, is meant to target the alleged facilitation of the ongoing opioid addiction crisis that has gripped much of American for years.

Walmart—which operates thousands of pharmacies nationwide—is named in the suit. The company had argued that the request for McMillon’s deposition was "harassing on its face" and should be dismissed.

But Special Master David Cohen, appointed by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern District, said McMillon may have "personal knowledge of and involvement in" the matters related to the suit, and that the plaintiffs could depose him as part of their discovery process. Amazon will overtake Walmart as the largest U.S. retailer in 2022, JPMorgan predicts 06/11/2021

Amazon is on track to overtake Walmart as the largest U.S. retailer in 2022, according to JPMorgan research released Friday.

Amazon’s U.S. retail business is the “fastest growing at scale,” according to the company’s analysts. Between 2014 and 2020, Amazon’s U.S. gross merchandise volume, or GMV — a closely watched industry metric used to measure the total value of goods sold over a certain time period — has grown “significantly faster” than both U.S. adjusted retail sales and U.S. e-commerce, the analysts said.

Neither Amazon nor Walmart break out GMV in their quarterly earnings results, but JPMorgan estimates Amazon’s GMV is growing faster than its largest retail competitor. JPMorgan analysts said Amazon’s GMV in 2020 climbed 41% year over year to $316 billion, while Walmart’s GMV is estimated to have grown 10% year over year to $439 billion in 2020. Complete article

Women accused of stealing over $100K from Walmart stores in multiple states 06/23/2021

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- Two women have been arrested by Mesa police after they allegedly stole from Walmart stores across five Western states. Mary Garcia, 47, and Melinda Rodriguez, 38, were arrested on June 17.

In March, Walmart Loss Prevention noticed multiple suspicious transactions involving the in-store scanning app. Garcia and Rodriguez would scan the merchandise with a smartphone to use the quick pay option at checkout, but bypassed the payment and walked out with the items. The app made it look like the two women were paying for the items.

Garcia and Rodriguez used this same tactic across Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado and Texas. Walmart Loss Prevention traced $72,000 stolen of goods back to Garcia in Maricopa County alone, and Rodriguez was responsible for $34,000 in stolen items. Complete article
