Walmart Crime Report September 2021

Walmart had another eight shootings in the month of September 2021, which is tied for the lowest they've had all year; however, this is still higher than average five or six years ago, and there were four deaths related to these shootings, which is tied for the worst this year. There were also at least two or three injuries from these shootings, which is fewer than usual, although one of them was a five year old child. Several of these started over petty arguments which escalated from there, which is common. There was also one other fatality from a Walmart shooting last June, who died from injuries related to the shooting, and wasn't previously counted. And there was a Walmart worker shot and killed while off-duty in an incident unrelated to Walmart, and they had a memorial at the store. And the first shooting of October happened on the first afternoon of October.

The media and search engines are clearly not as vigilant about reporting crime problems as they used to be, so this means that the amount turning up on search engines are far less complete, and this may include reports on shootings, but is much more likely to apply to lower profile crimes of all sorts, which weren't consistently reported in the first place, and is being reported even less now. Nevertheless there were at least half a dozen additional gun crimes, including petty arguments, including some that are racist, or robberies, and like most less severe crimes there were probably more that weren't widely reported.

In addition to the four people killed in shootings there were three more bodies found in their parking lots, including one murder, and one more Walmart employee and former cop was killed in a tractor trailer accident, bringing the total killed to at least eight. In most cases the bodies found in thier parking lot were allegedly natural causes, but there should be some concern about why so many people have no place to go and wind up dying at Walmart.

At another location unrelated to Walmart a Homeless man could face 7 years in prison for shortchanging store 43 cents 09/22/2021; however, there are many similar incidents constantly happening at Walmart, which is constantly pushing for tougher penalties for the poor while suppressing wages, and as I reported in previous articles, often getting caught at wage theft, which is treated as a civil matter not a criminal matter. There are numerous stories every month including this one about shopliftings of minor items are being turned into felonies sometimes calling them burglaries, which used to involve people breaking into houses.

They've taken this to such an extreme that when police tried to shame a person for stealing diapers in Florida after two credit or debit cards were declined, people all over the country were outraged at the police and Walmart not the father trying to take care of his kids and offered to pay for them if they let the guy go; but Walmart and the police insisted on enforcing their policies without reasonable discretion, at least for now. In another case, a homeless man set at least two fires, including one at Walmart and quickly admitted it. His motive wasn't disclosed, but there've been many other cases where poor or homeless people did things like this just to get free housing in jail. We have plenty of research showing that it's far less expensive to house the homeless or take care of other social problems but our government is controlled by Machiavellian oligarchs that want to "keep the citizens poor," as Machiavelli taught, so they can control them, while only pretending to support Democracy and serve the people.

There are an enormous number of trivial incidents where the people rigging the economy aren't held accountable while the victims who often are driven to desperation get all the blame including a homeless person who was beaten with a baton after spitting on an officer was charged with assault but officers using excessive force are almost never charged, as they serve interests of oligarchs. Other incidents include employees that brawl over petty disagreements before going back to work; an assistant prosecutor starting an argument over a $1 drink koozie who's actually arrested for it; and many other petty arguments, most that get little or no media coverage and are only discussed at the local level. There was also a recent report about an attempt to buy parts for a fake bomb twenty years ago at Walmart that was allegedly used on 9/11 but hardly got any coverage previously.

Fortunately another Walmart employee quit loud and clear over the PA system getting an enormous amount of attention in the store and on the internet where it went viral; it's only been a few months since the last time an employee did that and there was at least one other incident years ago where another employee did this. It's virtually guaranteed that Walmart will be restricting access to the PA system soon if they haven't done it already. However, this wont stop all viral videos of people quitting, since there have been even more made with videos that don't involve the PA system, some limited to loud speeches for all to hear, others involving knocking items off shelves or breaking things. One way or another this will be semi-routine as long as Walmart continues to abuse their workers and often customers as well.

There was also an incident where a Walmart Hairstyle salon was closed because all the employees quit at once to protest abusive work practices. There were also various robberies at Walmart and an attempted kidnapping.

In addition to the person killed in a tractor trailer accident there were several stolen cars, including one with a disabled dog in it, a road rage incident and numerous car accidents, including one where a Tesla drove through some bushes and landed on two other cars when going over a retaining wall from an elevated lot. Walmart had at least one other fire in addition to the one started by a homeless man, which was a vehicle at a gas station that was extinguished before causing much more damage if the tanks caught fire, which is rare since they're underground.

Walmart had at least four more knife attacks, including two stabbings, which is lower than usual, but the reason for this is almost certainly less reporting, not necessarily fewer incidents. Without reliable reporting there's no way of knowing if it's going up or down; however, if it's being suppressed as it appears, there's probably something to cover up. There was also a man threatening people with a stick; numerous sexual assaults or other assaults; a girl-fight over jealousy about the same man; a panic that was started over an exploding bike tire that people overreacted to; and a large theft of $55,000 by a cashier.

One Walmart customer went in for an oil change and had her car blow up before it was done; fortunately her child, which she usually keeps with her wasn't there at this time so she wasn't hurt or killed, but she was stranded for a while and Walmart broke promises to get her a rental while the case was settled. Walmart actually has incidents like this happen on a regular bases, and intentionally or not follow a consistent incompetent patterns of behavior. Even though they're a multi billion dollar company they routinely fight to minimize the damages from the beginning leaving many people stranded, and often, only after the media pays attention they quickly settle, which they can easily afford, but customers get stranded in the mean time. It would obviously be easier to settle right from the beginning, which will cost less and avoid bad publicity but they never seem to do this. There was another incident a year ago where an accident with their tractor trailer wiped out all the tow trucks for a small company which put them out of business until recently when they got a settlement, although there's a non-disclosure agreement which is routine to prevent future victims from knowing what to expect so they can minimize liability for their negligence, which is routine.

A fake news outlet released an article saying Walmart was accepting cryptocurrency from a specific company and dozens of real news outlets reposted this sending the stock surging in possible pump and dump scam. Walmart refuted this within a day but other news outlets were still reporting it. This is either incredible incompetence on the part of news outlets repeating it and possibly Walmart, or they were in on it pretending to be incompetent. Either way it raises major questions about how our economic system works rewarding major scams.

Walmart had a recall for a propane tank adapter, and they're involved in the usual non-stop lawsuits over more things than anyone can keep track of, often wining them, not based on their merits but on their political connections. And they found out their parking lot in Georgia is over an unmarked graveyard for former slaves.

Walmart is also renewing a lawsuit against Kanye West's Yeezy logo, which they claim looks like their logo; both of them look like an image of the sun. This has been copied for thousands of years in many forms with many variations, even though I'm not a fan of Kanye West I can't imagine how Walmart could get intellectual property rights for a replica of the sun. We used to have professionals that were actually concerned about fair play and the rights of the majority, like Dr. Jonas Salk who was once asked "Who owns the patent on this [polio] vaccine?" he replied, "Well, the people I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" The Supreme Court eventually agreed and when Walmart first objected they lost, but now they're trying again.

Apparently, if Walmart can get away with it the would "patent the sun!" And even the current court system isn't letting them, at least not yet, but they bend over backwards for them in many other cases, and it may be a matter of time before Walmart and other oligarchs get absolute power overruling the last shreds of Democracy if we let them!

Lin Wood went on a wild rant about the Illuminati and a fringe conspiracy theory about Walmart that doesn't make sense, which traditional media gave coverage to helping to promote misleading stereotypes about conspiracy theories; however, just because his claims don't have any credibility doesn't mean there isn't an enormous amount of reason to boycott Walmart when they're constantly suppressing worker and consumer rights, as well as doing their part, along with other oligarchs, to corrupt the Democratic process and even the courts. Nor does it mean that many conspiracy theories aren't much more rational and often turn out to be true, when they're well researched. Governments and corporations are constantly acting in secret and fail to keep all their secrets so good rational researchers often expose real conspiracies, and yes, wealthy people are rigging the economy in their favor and getting away with massive fraud.

There are even some semi-sophisticated scams, like a couple people that convinced an elderly woman from withdrawing $15,000 at Walmart which they robbed her of.

Furthermore, even if you don't call it a conspiracy, our culture of celebrity worship of so-called reality TV stars like a former reality TV "teen mom" who is now almost thirty years old going viral for visiting Walmart while her husband flashes his gun for publicity before crashing his car with children in the back seat. It's hard to imagine why anyone would follow these clowns on social media, but mainstream media is constantly promoting hype like this then, in some cases, like this one, firing them, as if they're taking the high ground while encouraging more foolish behavior for other reality TV stars that can't do anything but behave foolish to get attention.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in September 2021. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

At a Florida Walmart, the Hijacker Bought Items for a Fake Bomb to Scare Passengers on 9/11/2001 09/03/2021

In this series, Newsweek maps the road to 9/11 as it happened 20 years ago, day by day.

Marwan Al-Shehhi went to Walmart on Copans Road in Pompano Beach, Florida, on September 3 and purchased the following items: a toggle switch, gel mate, auto tape, and a 9-volt battery. The items appear to have been used to construct a device resembling a bomb to use onboard his flight—United Airlines Flight 175—to scare and subdue the passengers.

At 9:00 a.m. on 9/11, a passenger onboard al-Shehhi's plane named Peter Hanson called his father and reported: "It's getting bad, Dad ... A stewardess was stabbed ... They seem to have knives and Mace ... They said they have a bomb ... It's getting very bad on the plane ... Passengers are throwing up and getting sick ... The plane is making jerky movements ... I don't think the pilot is flying the plane ... I think we are going down ... I think they intend to go to Chicago or someplace and fly into a building ... Don't worry, Dad ... If it happens, it'll be very fast ... My God, my God."

On American Airlines Flight 11, piloted by Mohammed Atta, the hijackers sprayed Mace, pepper spray or some other irritant in the first-class cabin to force passengers and flight attendants to the rear of the plane. They also claimed to have a bomb but there is no evidence that they had even the fake components that al-Shehhi compiled. Complete article

Michigan police respond to Walmart after brawling employees exchange punches — then go back to work: report 09/0/2021

Michigan officers responded to a Walmart store after two employees reportedly exchanged punches in the middle of their shift – startling shoppers before cutting the quarrel short to continue working.

The incident happened on Aug. 23 around 1:19 p.m. at the Walmart store on Maple Road in Troy, Michigan. The brawl happened between a 49-year-old employee and an 18-year-old employee, who each gave contradicting accounts of who initiated the physical fight, WDIV reported.

The 49-year-old man, from Oak Park, told police he was struck in the back of the head and defended himself by then slugging his co-worker, an 18-year-old man from Oak Park But the 18-year-old man said the 49-year-old first pushed him in the chest, so he struck him in the side of the head. Mom Asks Walmart for Oil Change, Gets Car Blown Up Instead 09/03/2021

An Arizona woman who went to Walmart for an oil change claims she ended up with a blown up car instead.

Nikki Smith says she narrowly escaped with her life when her Jeep went up in a ball of flames at the Walmart Auto Center in Phoenix — and it was just by the Grace of God she didn't have her three-year-old daughter strapped in there at the time, either.

Smith told TooFab she brought the car to the supercenter on Sunday for a routine oil change. She says the only other issue the vehicle had ever had was a washer reservoir leak — which she had previously gotten fixed at the very same Walmart. .....

She claims after lifting up the hood, she discovered the oil cap had not been replaced, and had leaked all over the engine. She says Walmart agreed to take the car back, give it another oil change, and clean up the mess.

According to Smith, they even told her the employee responsible had been fired, and that the next oil change was on the house. ......

Smith claims two minutes after parking and walking into the manager's office, a worker ran in after her to inform them there was smoke billowing from the car. She says by the time they got outside,

the car was in flames, before ultimately exploding. .......

"Never one time did he apologize to me for this heartbreaking issue or even offer any help," she said. "My family and I could have lost our lives and he thinks I'm trying to gain something other than what I came to Walmart with — which is a car."

"I work very hard for everything I have. I work two jobs to provide for my daughter and now I don't even have a vehicle to go to either one of my jobs. I came to Walmart with a perfectly fine car and I had to WALK home with nothing." Complete article

Arnold man allegedly pulls out gun during parking spot dispute at Missouri Walmart 09/08/2021

A 25-year-old Arnold man allegedly pointed a gun at another man during a confrontation in the grocery pickup area at the Arnold Walmart, 2201 Michigan Ave., according to Arnold Police.

Officers were called at about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 to the store and found the man who allegedly had waved the gun around in a Toyota Scion parked in a space in the grocery pickup area, the report said.

The man got out of the Toyota and handed an officer a .9-milimeter Smith and Wesson gun. He said he had been waiting in a long line in the pickup area and after pulling into a parking spot, a man got out of a Kia Sportage and started banging on his windows and yelling at him to move, according to the report.

The driver of the Toyota told police he got a gun out of a compartment in the passenger-side door and put it on top of his glove box after the other man started banging on his window. He said the man from the Kia walked away and said the Toyota driver “would regret it,” the report said. Complete article

Walmart will phase out quarterly bonuses for store workers 09/09/2021

Walmart Inc. WMT, -0.43% is phasing out its decades-old quarterly bonuses for store workers, according to the company, as the retailer implements hourly wage increases for hundreds of thousands of its employees.

Walmart said it would scrap the benefit, dubbed “MyShare,” at the end of the company’s fiscal year on Jan. 31, 2022, according to a memo sent to staff discussing coming wage increases. “We are rolling MyShare into associates’ base pay going forward,” the memo said.

A Walmart spokeswoman said most workers say their hourly wage is the most important part of their pay, and that folding the bonus into wages increases the amount of consistent, predictable income. She said the quarterly bonus makes up just a portion of the pay increase workers are receiving. Complete article

Former Walmart president reveals plan for $400-billion Utopian city in the US desert 09/08/2021

Billionaire and former Walmart president Marc Lore helped outline a plan for a $400 billion metropolis, tabbed "the new city in America," to be built in the desert if properly funded.

Lore's mission statement for the city of Telosa is to "create a more equitable and sustainable future" that can "become a blueprint of future generations." That's backed by a 150,000-acre design proposal with eco-friendly architecture, sustainable energy production, and a drought-resistant water system.

A focal point of the city, set to house around 5 million, will be its transportation – with Telosa's streets prioritizing bikes and pedestrians, as well as slow-moving autonomous cars – over fossil fuel-dependent vehicles elsewhere. The official website for Telosa cites that 1 billion people will be affected by climate change in 2050. That figure falls in line with a United Nations climate change report in August dubbed a "code red for humanity," noting that Earth could reach 1.5°C by 2040. Complete article

‘It’s not only a scam, but it’s also a robbery,’ Oklahoma woman scammed out of $15,000 after Walmart trip 09/14/2021

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma woman is now out thousands of dollars following a simple shopping trip to Walmart. The Oklahoma City Police Department is hoping this case will serve as a warning to others.

“The main takeaway for the public is that you never want to engage in a financial conversation or engage in a financial transaction with a stranger who simply approaches you on the street or in a store,” said MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

And that’s where Knight told KFOR the story went wrong. A 71-year-old woman was scammed out of $15,000. Police believe these two people are responsible for the crime: ......

The alleged suspect began flagging down a man.

“A male suddenly enters the picture and starts explaining that banks are safe,” Knight said. “He then tells the victim you need to show her banks are safe by you making a withdrawal. The woman felt threatened to do so.”

The man identified himself as a Walmart manager, insisting the victim takes him to her bank. She finally gives in after fearing the alleged male suspect had a gun. Complete article

Allegany NY Walmart salon closed after all hairstylists walk out 09/13/2021

Staff member Dana Roth said the mass exit was inevitable with the way the site’s upper management had disregarded any concerns voiced to them.

“The last nine months especially has been fairly taxing with us having had a limited staff and no support from the higher-ups,” Roth told the Times Herald. Complete article

Walmart refuses to provide revenue figures in Ellsworth Maine tax abatement appeal 09/15/2021

ELLSWORTH — An abatement appeal by Walmart, which seeks to reduce its 2021 property tax from about $20 million to about $10 million, was tabled by the Board of Appeals Sept. 13 in order to determine whether the city can order Walmart to hand over three years of sales information. City Assessor Larry Gardner had made the request to help determine his assessment, which uses, in part, an income-based approach.

Bruce Stavitsky, representing Walmart, held that gross sales figures were confidential business information.

“That’s proprietary, how much value [the store] generates,” he said. “And it does not relate to the value of real estate at all.”

That is where Walmart and Gardner differ in their approaches. Walmart uses the “dark store” assessment method, which bases the value of the real estate on its market value if the store was closed. Complete article

Maine Walmart must face bias claim by worker regularly absent post-injury -1st Circ 09/17/2021

(Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court has revived claims that Walmart Inc unlawfully fired a "people greeter" at a Maine store who was absent or left work early on more than 20 occasions to attend doctor appointments or because of complications caused by medication for a work-related injury.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said on Wednesday it was unclear whether Margaret Benson's attendance lapses were excusable under Walmart policy because they stemmed from a pelvic injury she sustained while working. The panel said a Maine district court judge should not have granted summary judgment to the retail giant.

The court revived Benson's claim of disability discrimination and her allegation that Walmart unlawfully retaliated against her for complaining that she was being harassed for missing work for medical reasons. Complete article

Beaver Dam Wisc. to settle Walmart lawsuits 09/21/2021

Beaver Dam will settle lawsuits from Walmart after getting caught in the “dark store loophole.”

The Common Council approved the settlement agreements Monday. Walmart filed multiple cases against the city in 2019 and this year to lower the property value on its store and distribution center, which would lower its property taxes. Big box corporations have taken such legal action across the state, sometimes reaching settlements with municipalities and sometimes failing in court.

The settlement approved Monday will not affect the store. The distribution center value will lower and issue a refund of about $112,000. All the lawsuits will be dismissed. Complete article

Overson and Trujillo intended to discuss issues they had over a boy they were both supposedly seeing at the same time.

Walmart, EEOC Renew Fight Over Coach as Disability Accommodation 09/24/2021

The EEOC failed to show that a deaf and visually impaired cart pusher could perform his essential work duties, and the employee also wasn’t entitled to a permanent assistant to help with those duties, Walmart will tell the Seventh Circuit on Friday.

Walmart provided Paul Reina with a job coach for the nearly 17 years he worked at its store in Beloit, Wis., and the Americans with Disabilities Act doesn’t punish an employer for providing a disabled worker with more generous job assistance than the law mandates, according to Walmart Stores Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores East LP.

Previously letting Reina have a job coach can’t be held against it, the company said in briefing in advance of Friday’s oral argument. Complete article

‘Every Day Is Frightening’: Working for the Top U.S. Employer Amid Covid 09/27/2021

As offices debate the merits and logistics of reopening, a parallel sphere of workers like Peter Naughton, a Walmart cashier, seem to inhabit another world. Often their jobs just got really hard.

It was a hot morning in Baton Rouge, La., the day that Peter Naughton woke up on the floor.

Sore, disoriented, he’d already grasped what his mother was now telling him: He’d had another seizure. But he also grasped a larger truth: He needed to pull it together and somehow go to work.

A cashier and self-checkout host at the nearby Walmart, Mr. Naughton dreaded depleting his limited paid time off in the midst of a pandemic. His mother, for her part, insisted that her epileptic son, then 44, stay home and rest. The hours after a seizure were difficult enough. Toss in the stress of Covid-19 and a customer base that largely — and often angrily — rejected mask use, and a day at work seemed anything but recuperative.

In the end, Mr. Naughton’s growing headache and general fogginess were intense enough that he conceded to his mother’s wishes. He dialed once, twice, three times. No answer. Given the penalty for missing work without giving notice — and the fear of risking his job during uncertain times — he saw what he had to do. Reeling, he made the trip to the store and clocked in. Officers tried stopping the man, identified in a police report as 21-year-old Jairice Shelton. They said Shelton took off running into the nearby Lowe’s, however.

Police said Shelton was found hiding between the shelves in the store, concealed under some products. He told police he was involved in a fight at Walmart and ran because he “got scared,” but he refused to answer further questions when asked about the gun, according to a police report. Unmarked graves found near a Ga. Walmart parking lot 09/28/2021

Residents have long suspected that there may be slaves buried near a Walmart parking lot in Decatur, just outside the Crowley Mausoleum. This is what we found.

DECATUR, Ga. — Every day thousands of cars drive by what looks like an ordinary parking lot in Decatur, Georgia. But there is nothing ordinary about it.

A memorial, many don’t even know exists, sits roughly 300 feet from Memorial Drive. The mausoleum, a Civil War-era burial site, is enclosed by 15-feet tall granite walls. It’s seen better days. Graffiti stains the outside of the shrine while inside overgrown trees and grass cover the tombs. But Jessica Derise was drawn to it. Complete article

Walmart is still angry about Kanye's new Yeezy logo 09/30/2021

From his outspoken opinions to the heel-dragging charade that is his album release schedule, Kanye West is no stranger to controversy. But he's also managed to raise eyebrows in the design world too – and the latest brand to take issue with one of Ye's logos is none other than Walmart.

The company has taken issue with a sun-shaped logo (below) intended for use as part of Kanye's fashion label, Yeezy. Walmart says the logo, featuring a collection of dots in the shape of the sun's rays, is far too similar to its own sun-shaped logo, and that it will create "confusion" and a "false suggestion of a connection" to Walmart's brand. Maybe West and his team needed our guide to logo design.

Walmart has already had one attempt to block the logo quashed, but according to The Fashion Law, it's doubling down on its efforts. After Yeezy successfully claimed that "Walmart certainly knows, as does the consuming public, that the last thing [Yeezy] wants to do is associate itself with [Walmart],” Walmart has amended its filing, "replacing its Deception/False Designation of Origin claim with a False Suggestion of a Connection claim".
