Walmart Crime Report February 2020

Walmart had at least eighteen shootings and fifteen deaths in February 2020, with seven of those deaths related to the shootings including two that came from the same shooting where two people shot and injured each other, with both of them dying within a day or two of the shooting. (Edit: this was initially reported with only seventeen shootings but another one was reported a few days late and has now been added.) At least four of the shootings were officer involved shootings and two of them resulted in the death of the suspect, with two officers being shot by one of them and another officer being shot in a separate incident where the the suspect was arrested later. One of the deaths was an apparent suicide, after being caught in a crime and crashing his care, before shootings himself, and there was at least two additional attempted suicides after another two suspects were caught at crime, one in a carjacking, when he was unable to stab himself he said the police should have shot him, another one also has self inflicted wounds following an armed stand-off. There were, as usual, at least four or five more injuries as a result of the shootings possibly more.

There were also more than a dozen additional gun related crimes, including several robberies, at least one active shooter scare, a domestic argument, and a case where two suspects were arrested at Walmart for a fatal shooting that happened at a nearby college, which is in addition to the ones taking place at Walmart. Another murder suspect was arrested at a Walmart in California as well; and there was a video released from an incident in December 2018 where a suspects attacked a women at Walmart and was also charged with a triple stabbing elsewhere that killed two people.

The towns of Chicopee Massachusetts and Derby Vermont are both expressing concerns about their high crime problems at Vermont, in a low crime part of the country, especially Derby Vermont. Even the lowest crime areas seem to have more problems at Walmart than other stores and there've been dozens of other police departments across the country expressing similar concerns, although they're only reported at the local level. Walmart is now reserving parking spots for police officers around the country whether they're on duty or not. there's no discussion about whether or not this is appropriate giving law enforcement preferential treatment; not is there any discussion about addressing the root causes of their high crime problems, including corner cutting, store design, union busting, and other policies that anger both workers and customers often contributing to crime etc.

Ironically one of the towns that hasn't expressed concerns in the past several years is Jacksonville Florida which has more than their share of crime problems there and it seems to have been worse than usually last month with one of the shootings taking place there, at least three assaults, and a man driving his van through a Republican Party tent as well. this is on top of many more petty crimes that don't get reported nearly as widely. there was a report back in 2016 just before Bloomberg came out with a rare national report about Walmart's high crime problems. According to Crimes at Jacksonville's big box stores last year cost taxpayers $75K 06/27/2016 they had about five times as many calls form the police as Target with slightly less than twice the total number of stores, so it's more than two and a half times as many calls per store. Jacksonville does have more than double the national average murder rate, so it's not just a problem at Walmart but many other major cities across the country are even worse and most of them don't seem to have as many high profile crimes, at Walmart, although I haven't done a thorough review.

Tallahassee has much less crime problems than Jacksonville, only slightly worse than national average, which means it's probably better than most large cities, but they had two of the seven deaths that weren't related to shootings last month. Two bodies were found there and two other bodies were found in Georgia and Illinois Walmart's, with two people being killed in in accidents, one a hit and run in Oklahoma, the other a crash in Kansas, a women had a medical incident after being arrested and dying in Tennessee, and a man dying after getting stuck in a donation bin in Tennessee as well.

I can't image how he got stuck in the bin or what caused his death.

Walmart also had someone "talking nonsensically," threatening people with a bow and arrow that was arrested, it wasn't initially reported that he was angry about a prescription that wasn't filled out, when this was reported it was days later when fewer people would be inclined to pay attention. there are aq lot of disgruntled customers at Walmart and there's a good chance that many of the people doing absurd things might be partly as a result of anger over service or products without having this reported in the media.

Another man went on a rampage spraying people with a fire extinguisher; and a couple teens came in to one of their stores with one of them wearing a respiration mask with a sign on his back saying "Caution I have the Coronavirus" who went around spraying Lysol on what they say is seven thousand dollars worth or produce. There's little doubt that Walmart will seek financial restitution, even if the suspect has little or no money which they usually do. Courts often award this, but there's little or no chance of collecting it; and in one case a few years back someone was caught stealing stuff so that he could pay what they were pressuring him for. I know it sounds nice to say that if they do the crime they should pay for it, but the political and economic establishment rig the economy against the majority of the public and they're not held to the same standard.

Walmart also has dozens of sexual assaults, stalkings, upskirts every year including an attempted rape that took place inside the store in Plantation Florida which was stopped by shoppers & employees. The media didn't refer to these people as "good Samaritans" although that might have been justified in this case but they often do refer to people that stop non-violent shoplifters, often with violence, as "good Samaritans," including one case =last month where a shopper slammed his shopping cart into one to stop him. They initially referred to him as vigilante, which may be more accurate. They seem to have forgotten that the story about the Good Samaritan was about someone from the lower classes that helped heal a person that was attacked and robbed, not about someone going on a violent rampage to stop petty shop lifters.

Walmart also received complaints that they banned two disabled people last month for reasons that either don't make sense or weren't even explained. One of them seems to have documented times where he was ridiculed and charged for things they said they didn't have in stock, and may have been banned for making complaints about this, which wouldn't be the first time this has happened. And the other was banned for using the handicapped parking space with a handicapped tag that the loss prevention officer claimed was fake; and the police officer that issued the citation didn't question her, even though he had only one leg and was using a prosthetic on the other with a cane! This also happened in Jacksonville Florida, which seems to have exceptionally strange Walmart activity.

Another customer found a razor blade in shoes, which is not unprecedented, but not nearly as common as finding them in shopping carts where they're put to cut packaging to make shoplifting easier. They had various assaults, an attempted kidnapping, and someone that threatened to kill employees, and many other similar crimes.

Tennessee ruled that they could charge shoplifters with felonies even if they're for petty offences if it's a repeat offender; this is part of a growing trend to increase punishment that targets working class while reducing regulations stopping the wealthy from rigging economy in their favor which indirectly leads to higher blue collar crime including shoplifting.

In other words it should be considered virtual entrapment.

In addition to the person that was killed in a hit and run Walmart had over a dozen crashes, road rage incidents, a couple officers struck or dragged by shoplifters, police chases auto thefts, carjackings and other vehicle crimes, not counting minor fender benders which would probably be more than a hundred if not a thousand every month but rarely get reported.

They had at least five knife related crimes including a stolen machete, and four stabbings, which is a little on the low side assuming this is all they had. It's also a slow month for fires with only four of them reported and few if any of them were arson, which may be the first time in years they didn't have any arson in a whole month, assuming no reports were missed.

There were many more assaults, sometimes on employees, police or other customers, shopliftings, an employee accused of stealing over $80,000, which isn't as uncommon as you might think stealing of entire shopping carts and other crimes. In one fight involving multiple people one of the people arrested was a popular coach; in Washington DC White Nationalists marched near Union Station to Walmart where they parked their cars; and a woman planted a smoke bomb in one store.

In Texas two African American women were put in hand cuffs after being asked for a receipt, not because they stole anything or refused to comply but because one of them commented as she was complying that she noticed that they didn't ask another person for a receipt, who was presumably white; following this observation they increased their harassment and called in help; the women are now seeking new training of workers to stop racial profiling.

Walmart had recalls for baby carriers for a buckle that can break, and water bottle that cause a choking hazard, for the second time in less than eight months. A consumer group also found that the bottled water they sold had higher levels of arsenic than tap water or than the acceptable guidelines, although there's no initial news on if it was recalled. these recalls rarely ever get much media attention, so many people never find out about them, and repeating the same mistakes over and over again is routine.

Walmart labor problems never slow down including protests outside Alice Walton's Penthouse, after they came up with what they call a "Great Workplace" restructuring, which apparently means they're eliminating jobs closer to the opposite of their slogan, as usual; a mother of a special needs son was outraged because they kicked him out; they're running into privacy issues in their efforts to collect personal data from customers, and their own activities continue to be done in secret, including how they manipulate people with deceptive ads using this data; and there's outrage over two more firings from them, one a worker that was loved by the community often trying to help them get good deals, another an ex-con who worked for them for six years and his rehabilitation was going as well as it can be expected until he did so well he decided to apply for a promotion, and they reviewed his record again, checking details they already knew about but decided to fire him anyway, when they could have simply declined to promote him.

A Walmart in Minnesota had a photo of their socks and underwear after they locked them up to deter theft! There was no consideration from Walmart that this might be a sign that there are too many desperate people that can't even afford basic necessities, or consideration for the possibility that they might be contributing to this problem buy busting unions & shipping jobs over seas.

You might think politicians might be concerned about this, even if the business community isn't; however they're way to bust catering to their campaign contributors like Walmart to care about the poor especially since efforts to reduce voting among them have been way to successful. Very few traditional politicians recognize that this is a sign of a serious flaw in our economic system, which is why Bernie Sanders is doing so well now!

A couple friends in Texas decided to create their own wrestling video at Walmart including a flip from a counter onto a table, with one of their friends dressed as a referee. there doesn't seem to be any police report investigating them or complaints from Walmart, there was even an employee walking by in the video, and customers seemed to find it amusing.

They had another bedbug scare, in Ohio after they found someone released bedbugs the month before in Pennsylvania, telling customers that it was all clear, without announcing whether they found them or not, which they almost certainly would have if they found no signs of them, implying there probably was a problem.

One customer claimed that she was being followed after leaving a Walmart, when she called the police they advised her to go tho the police station, where the suspect continued following her, eventually getting arrested saying "I know it looks bad." It turned out he had a record for similar incidents, and probably wasn't the smartest sex offender in the court docket.

Another customer had their own emotional support snake they took to Walmart, apparently without any complaints, although that might have changed when the media picked up on it.

A couple teens decided it would be a good idea to spray deer urine on what Walmart claimed as one or two thousand dollars worth of clothes; this is a semi-regular event happening at least a couple other times in the past several years.

Another customer started eating their sandwiches right in the store; when confronted he started knocking things off the shelf later telling police he was Jesus Christ.

They charged him with failure to identify.

How do they know he isn't Jesus Christ?

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in February 2020. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

They’re not at the Champaign or Urbana Walmarts.

“Customer access gates are motorized gates placed near the store entrance to deter theft by better controlling how customers enter and exit through the store,” she said. “The gates provide a single point of entry and are a strong visual deterrent to protect against theft.” Complete article

DeKalb County Ind. food pantries struggling after losing Walmart as donation partner 02/04/2020

GARRETT, Ind. (WANE) – Food pantries in DeKalb County are grappling with a huge loss. They’ve lost their biggest supplier, the Walmart Distribution Center in Garrett.

The donation partner used give the food pantries free meat, produce and dairy products. Then on January 1, 2020, Walmart changed its food distribution model as far as donations are concerned. The retail giant wanted better oversight over the safe handling of their donations and wanted to centralize who receives them.

Now, the corporation only gives donations to Feeding America food banks and member agencies. That includes the Community Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne.

This situation leaves the DeKalb County food pantries that once got free food from Walmart having to pay to receive them from Community Harvest. Complete article

Walmart Just Dragged Primary Care Into the Healthcare Cost Battle 02/04/2020

Last week, mega-retailer Walmart (NYSE:WMT) tiptoed deeper into mostly uncharted healthcare waters by opening its second primary care facility called Walmart Health. The new location in Calhoun, Georgia, will be staffed with healthcare providers offering everything from walk-in and clinical care to x-rays and dental services, mirroring a similar center it opened in September in Dallas, Georgia. The company said the facility will provide "affordable, transparent pricing regardless of a patient’s insurance status."

Were it just one such location, the facility could simply be categorized as a pet project; many companies maintain small business units for experimental purposes. It's not just one though, and it's not just Walmart moving deeper into primary care. Insurer Humana (NYSE:HUM) is undertaking a joint venture with a private equity firm to develop more primary care centers aimed at serving older Americans. Walgreens Boots Alliance's (NASDAQ:WBA) primary care partner VillageMD announced a deal last week to acquire almost 50 different medical practices in Arizona. Complete article

Richland Co. woman files police report after stalking incident inside SC Walmart on Two Notch Road 02/05/2020

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A Richland County woman said three men stalked her inside the Walmart on Two Notch Road on Sunday night. She even took video of the incident and shared it on Facebook.

Winta Adams said she was just doing her normal grocery shopping Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m. when she realized three men were following closely behind her as she walked down each aisle. She said the men didn't have carts or any groceries in their hands.

That's when she whipped out her phone and took a video. In the video, you can hear Adams ask the men if they are following her. Instead of answering her question, she said the men looked at her, stepped out of the frame, and then went right back to following her. That's when Adams said she reported the incident to Walmart security.

She said Walmart security told her the men had left the building and another customer walked her out to her car. Complete article

Family of murdered Tulare Ca. man blaming Walmart for not properly storing ammunition 02/06/2020

Empty Wyoming Walmart shelves are a sobering reminder of how much we depend on truckers 02/07/2020

A Wyoming woman recently shared images of wiped out shelves at a Walmart store as a reminder of how much we rely on truck drivers to bring the goods we need to survive.

Facebook user LaRae Davis recently shared photos from the Rock Springs Wyoming store with nearly bare shelves due to the fact that winter weather storms and road closures have prevented truckers from making deliveries.

Davis wrote, “This is OUR Walmart shelves. No it’s not because they don’t have enough help, or their stockers aren’t doing their jobs. This is because TRUCKERS have been stranded all along I-80 for days, unable to deliver the goods. This is the beginning of what it would look like if the truckers stopped trucking.” Complete article

Man drives van into Republican party tent at Walmart parking lot in Sandalwood Fla. 02/08/2020

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating after witnesses said a van purposefully drove into a tent belonging to the Republican Party of Duval County Saturday at the Walmart in Sandalwood.

JSO was called to the scene at 11900 Atlantic Blvd at the Kernan Village shopping center just before 4 p.m., police said. Witnesses told police that the driver, described as a man in his early 20s with thin brown hair, pulled up to the tent where volunteers for the Republican Party were registering people to vote. He then drove through the tent and over their tables and chairs. No volunteers were hurt, according to JSO.

"I thought he was going to slow down, but he didn't and he gunned his engine and headed straight," a volunteer with the Republican Party of Duval County who said she was narrowly missed by the car said.

GOP volunteers said this incident further divides the country.

"When did violence become the answer? Just because I don’t agree with you? That’s not America," volunteer Gerri Woodham said.

"We have a right to disagree. We don’t have to agree. That’s what America is about, but we should have peaceful discourse," Woodham said.

The driver then stopped, took a video with his cell phone and drove off, JSO said. The van is described as an older '80s model brown Chevy with a yellow stripe down the bottom. Complete article

Truck group backs Walmart on appeal 02/11/2020

Walmart Inc.'s request that a federal appeals court reconsider its decision to uphold a $54.6 million jury award to California truck drivers has the support of the nation's largest trucking industry trade group, according to recent court filings.

The Bentonville-based retailer asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a petition filed Jan. 21 for a rehearing on its Jan. 6 ruling that upheld the award from a lower court. A class of Walmart truck drivers claims the company violated California employment law by not paying them for required layovers.

The American Trucking Associations, along with the California Trucking Association and two for-hire carriers, jointly filed an amicus brief Feb. 3 supporting Walmart's request. The brief focuses on one of the three issues Walmart raised, stating the lower court interpreted employers' standard of "control" over drivers during nondriving times in a way that conflicts with federal hours-of-service regulations. 'I know it looks bad' | Registered sex offender accused of following teen sisters from Missouri Walmart all the way to police station 02/13/2020

ST. PETERS, Mo. — A registered sex offender is facing new charges in St. Charles County after police said he followed two sisters he saw at a Walmart.

Matthew Foerstel was charged with stalking, harassment and assault in connection with the Wednesday incident.

According to the probable cause statement, the victims — an 18-year-old and a 13-year-old — first noticed Foerstel when they were walking from the store on Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters to their car. They said he backed his truck down the parking aisle while they walked to their car, then followed close behind them as they left the parking lot.

The 18-year-old said she got suspicious and told her younger sister to call police. After making several unnecessary turns on the way home, she decided to go back to Walmart because she was so worried, the probable cause statement said.

The 911 operator told them to drive to the police station, which they did. While the sisters were inside the police station reporting what was happening, Foerstel pulled onto the lot, the statement said. Complete article

Walmart shuts down its experimental personal shopping service, Jet black 02/13/2020

Walmart is shutting down its personal shopping service, Jet black, on February 21, after struggling to find adoption or additional investment. The service had allowed New York-area customers to text message orders for home delivery. According to its website, Jet black will now no longer accept new orders and will refund its customers their most recent $50 monthly membership fee.

The retailer is trying to spin the shutdown as a learning experience, noting that part of the initiative was to test and build technology that could eventually be applied to other parts of Walmart’s business. In Jet black’s case, Walmart learned about conversational commerce and how customers could use text messages to shop.

But according to an earlier report from The Wall Street Journal, Walmart had discussed investment with several potential partners, including Microsoft and VC firm NEA. Those talks didn’t pan out. Jet black, the report said, had gained fewer than 1,000 customers and remained a money-losing business. Complete article

Walmart employees say they’re preparing for job cuts as retailer rolls out its ‘Great Workplace’ program 02/18/2020

Walmart last spring said it was testing a sweeping overhaul that would make its stores better run and create more opportunities for employees to “do meaningful work.”

The “Great Workplace” initiative, the retailer said, would be “the key to winning the future of retail.”

But nearly a year in, workers say the effort, which will reach 1,100 of the company’s 5,300 U.S. stores by year end, has led to widespread confusion.

Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, is telling employees that it is doing away with certain positions — including hourly supervisors and assistant store managers — and replacing them with a smaller set of roles that carry more responsibilities, often for the same pay, according to interviews with current and former store employees, and internal documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Workers say they are being asked to apply, interview and test for new positions, essentially pitting them against their colleagues for a shrinking number of jobs. Some are terrified they will lose their job and insurance. Complete article

Walmart’s Holiday Season ‘Wasn’t As Good As Expected’ 02/18/2020

(CNN) — Walmart, America’s largest retailer, reported subpar holiday sales Tuesday, reflecting a weak holiday shopping season for the brick-and-mortar retail industry.

Sales at stores and websites open for at least one year — a key measure of the retailer’s health— increased only 1.9% during its final quarter of 2019. That included a 35% spike in online sales. Wall Street expected a stronger performance.

“In the few weeks before Christmas, we experienced some softness” in toys, video games and clothing, Walmart chief financial officer Brett Biggs said in a news release. The holiday “wasn’t as good as expected,” he said.

The shorter holiday season last year also contributed to the slowdown, according to Walmart. There were six fewer days this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas than last year. Complete article

Walmart says coronavirus will likely impact its business 02/18/2020

The first quarter impact could amount to a loss of a couple of cents per share.

While Walmart is not currently having a problem with the shipping of its goods, a longer term disruption from the outbreak in China “could impact our business,’’ Biggs said. Complete article

Walmart takes new steps against opioid epidemic 02/18/2020

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (KAIT/KNWA) - Walmart has started to take a more active approach to the opioid epidemic by trying to better control the medicine distributed by its nearly 17,000 pharmacists.

Fayetteville NBC affiliate KNWA reports one of the key restrictions Walmart implemented is a limit on initial acute opioid prescriptions to no more than a seven day supply. They hope this helps avoid giving patients too strong of a dose.

Walmart is also supplying the patients with a better method of disposing their leftover prescriptions.

Most importantly, Walmart is making it a priority to hand out doses of Narcan, an antitoxin for opioid overdose.

"We know that to save someone in an overdose one of the best things you can do is to have that antidote Narcan," Walmart's Regional Health and Wellness Director William Cook said. Complete article

Ex-con was doing great at Walmart – until he went for promotion 02/19/2020

For six years, it seemed exactly how rehabilitation is supposed to work.

Ex-con Darrell Frederick worked his way up Walmart’s ladder, from truck unloader in 2013 to customer service manager to support manager, all while staying out of trouble and being a contributor rather than a drain on society.

Then he made a fateful mistake: He went for another promotion.

After going through the training and scoring 92.59% and 88.89% on the two tests last fall, he was devastated by Walmart’s response to his apparent success:

“This letter is to provide you important information that Walmart has canceled your conditional offer of employment.”

The letter went on to explain that he was “not eligible for employment at this time” and that the decision was “based on the contents of the background check report and/or your self-reported information.”

In other words, the company was cutting him loose because of his criminal background, even though it knew about that when it hired him six years earlier. Complete article

Walmart could run into privacy issues in its efforts to get personal with consumers, analysts say 02/20/2020

Walmart Inc. wants to get to know its customers better, but Cowen analysts warn that the retail giant could see its efforts rebuffed unless transparency is emphasized.

“We have a lot of data and have good visibility into where people are shopping, what’s happening with us,” said Doug McMillon, Walmart’s WMT, -1.63% chief executive, during the company’s investment community meeting on Tuesday, according to a FactSet transcript.

“[W]e have a lot of data and we can gather even more data. [I]f you win their most frequently purchased items, you get the opportunity to serve impulse items online and in-store, and our focus is in driving that sweet spot,” he said.

But Cohen analysts warned against running afoul of customer privacy standards. Complete article

Walmart’s request for a tax break in Ellsworth Me. could test the ‘dark store’ theory 02/19/2020

The Walmart Supercenter in Ellsworth is appealing the city’s rejection of its request to cut its property tax bill in half. The outcome could be a Maine test case of the “dark store” tax assessment theory, which big box retailers have used nationwide to argue that their properties are worth less for tax purposes.

Walmart, located on Myrick Street, is seeking to reduce its Ellsworth property tax bill in 2017 from about $361,000 to $180,500, City Assessor Larry Gardner said. It appealed the city’s denial of that request to the State Board of Property Tax Review in January 2019, seeking a reduction of the building’s valuation from $20.1 million to $10.1 million. Walmart Workers Demand Fair Pay and Hours at Protest Outside Alice Walton's NY Penthouse as Retail Giant Cuts Jobs 02/18/2020

The protest was partially a response to the company's so-called "Great Workplace" restructuring initiative.

Walmart workers issued a "wake up call" to Alice Walton, an heir to the retailer's $500 billion fortune, in New York on Tuesday by marching to Walton's New York penthouse and demanding her company pay its 1.5 million workers a living wage and give them reliable, stable work schedules.

The protest was partially a response to the company's so-called "Great Workplace" restructuring initiative which Walmart began testing last year and plans to roll out in at least 1,100 of its 5,300 U.S. stores by the end of 2020.

According to internal documents obtained by the Washington Post Tuesday, employees are bracing for job cuts under the program, which will consolidate multiple workers' responsibilities into single roles with hourly pay staying the same or even going down in some cases.

"Associates worry Walmart is using the 'Great Workplace' to cut costs by reducing overall staffing and the general number of mid-level store managers," said United for Respect in a press statement. "Walmart has deliberately been pursuing a part-time strategy for more than a decade. In 2005, 80% of Walmart's associates were full-time. By 2018, an estimated 50% of Walmart's U.S. workforce were part-time." Complete article

Tennessee high court OKs tougher shoplifting charges 02/21/2020

The Tennessee Supreme Court has ruled that repeat misdemeanor shoplifters can be charged with a felony burglary.

Ken Baldwin, the attorney general of the 1st Judicial District, says it is “a really big decision" for local prosecutors. He said it is also good news to large retailers who are often the victims of habitual shoplifting.

“Walmart has to take those thefts into their cost of doing business,” he said.

Baldwin said the ruling applies to cases where defendants with four or more previous misdemeanor convictions for shoplifting have been banned from a specific store. He said these defendants are often addicted to drugs, and return to the same retailers to steal merchandise that they will later attempt to exchange for refunds or gift cards that will be used to purchase drugs.

“We are talking about a significant number of defendants,” Baldwin said.

He also said shoplifters are “more violent these days,” and are known to fight with theft prevention officers and carry weapons. Complete article

Problem Solved: Walmart.Com Banned Me, And I Don’t Know Why 02/23/2020 Christopher Elliott

Q: I’m having two problems with Walmart. When I order food online, Walmart has repeatedly delivered expired and rotten food. Also, I’ve had problems with Walmart.com. I’ve been getting error messages on the site for the past 10 days when I try to check out. I can’t make a purchase.

Walmart customer service has given me all kinds of insane excuses for these issues. It continues to engage in unethical antics that insult and ridicule me as a homebound disabled person.

For example, Walmart customer service has repeatedly advised me to “go to the store” for my groceries, since the website is not working. I have explained that I am disabled and cannot physically get to the store.

Walmart.com also claims its Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) system is down. Now it is telling me that I am under investigation by the Walmart billing department and that my account has been deliberately deactivated.

I have documented many of these chats with Walmart customer service as well as taken pictures of the rotten food they delivered in the past. I have been charged for items that were said to be out of stock without receiving a refund and am subjected to demeaning and obnoxious treatment by Walmart customer service, managers and other Walmart associates. Socks, underwear require 'additional security' at this Minnesota Walmart 02/26/2020

The unusual arrangement can be found at the Walmart at 3601 2nd. St. S., and a picture of it has gone viral on Facebook, being shared more than 1,600 times.

"You know St Cloud has gotten bad when St Cloud Walmart is locking up socks and underwear behind glass," the poster wrote. There's a good reason that specific Walmart has added security to stockings and underpants: theft. Complete article

Why does the Walmart in Newport have a parking spot reserved for law enforcement? 02/28/2020

NEWPORT ― Law enforcement officers now have a reserved parking spot at Walmart, but it’s not just the corporate giant’s Newport location that’s making room for police.

“As a courtesy to law enforcement, we are designating a reserved parking space at all of our Walmart U.S. stores,” Casey Staheli, senior manager of national media relations at Walmart, said in an email to The Daily News. “We invited them to use this space, whether they are on or off duty as they shop with us. This is just one way we’re looking to strengthen our relationship with police, provide a greater sense of security at our stores, and appreciate the work they do serving our communities across the country.”

“Obviously the safety and security of our stores is a top priority,” Staheli said in a phone conversation with The Daily News, but he insisted the reserved spots are meant as a courtesy to law enforcement and “nothing more.” Complete article

2 women placed in handcuffs after trying to leave Tx. Walmart say they were racially-profiled 02/28/2020

PEARLAND, Texas (KTRK) -- Two African American women are asking Walmart to provide additional training to their employees after they were put in handcuffs as they tried to leave the store in November.

Samantha Sharpe and her aunt, Cleatris Johnson, said they were stopped by a Walmart employee in Pearland as they headed for the exit with their bags. The employee reportedly asked to see their receipt.

"Ms. Johnson complied and started getting out her receipt," civil rights lawyer, Randall Kallinen, said. "She did ask, 'I noticed that you didn't stop those individuals.'"

The women said the employee pulled out a radio and called for someone else. A plainclothes loss prevention officer showed up moments later.

"We were tussling and she was trying to snatch my bag out of my hand," Sharpe said. "I was saying, 'Hey, don't touch my bag. Don't touch me,' and we were physically tussling in the store and then all the contents fell out on the ground."

The police were called and placed the women in handcuffs.

Once the officer reviewed the surveillance video and matched the items on the receipt to the items the women had, the women were released.

"To have handcuffs on and to have customers walking in and out of the store taking pictures of you on their cell phone, that is really low and embarrassing and I don't think you can get any lower than that," Sharpe said. Complete article

UPDATE: Man arrested at Wichita Falls Tx. Walmart for disturbance, taken there by Comanche County Sheriff’s vehicle 02/29/2020

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) - A San Antonio man was arrested Friday night for multiple charges after attempting to break into a gun case at a Wichita Falls Walmart and was reportedly dropped off at the establishment by a marked Comanche County Sheriff’s vehicle.

Ken Esparza, 38, reportedly was armed with a baseball bat and broke the glass of a gun cabinet. Wichita Falls police say he began to resist when officers attempted to place handcuffs on him, and he gave a false name at first.

WFPD officers report that surveillance video shows a marked Comanche County, Oklahoma, sheriff’s vehicle drop Esparza off at the Walmart at 10:50 p.m.

Sheriff Kenny Stradley told 7News that Esparza was found walking on the Comanche Turnpike by deputies. In an effort to prevent Esparza from being struck my traffic, they picked him up. They were aware he was from San Antonio, and Stradley gave them the ‘OK’ to take Esparza to the Wichita Falls Walmart to try to get a ride to San Antonio.

Sheriff Stradley said earlier that day, Esparza reportedly tried to purchase a knife at Lawton Central Mall, but did not have enough money to cover the cost. He took the knife anyway and mall personnel did not file any charges for theft, since he had already paid a good portion for the knife. Sheriff Stradley said when Esparza was later found walking along the turnpike he did not have the knife with him and did not pose a threat. Complete article
