Walmart broke the record for the highest number of shootings in December with at least twenty probably more; and had the second highest number of shootings this year, which is the first time in at least five or six years that they didn't break the record set the previous years. There were at least one-hundred and sixteen shootings this year, probably more, either on the premises or as a result of activities that began on the premises, like a shoplifting leading to a chase and shooting elsewhere. In 2017 there were one-hundred-twenty-one shootings; and the third highest number of shootings was one-hundred-and-one in 2016.
This month there were at least twenty shootings; however, there were several other incidents without complete information including a suicide that didn't specify the cause, and assault with a deadly weapon drawing blood causing serious injury that didn't specify the weapon, which could have been a gun or a knife, and a shooting with ammunition that killed two off the premises where the shooter also died in a car accident in Tulare Ca. All the suicides that I remember in Walmart parking lots were a result of gunshots, so this one was almost certainly a shooting incident. The incident in Tulare didn't take place on the premises, or immediately after the theft; so depending on whether you consider that a Walmart shooting, or if the injured person was shot or stabbed, there might have been twenty to twenty-two shootings increasing the record for the most shootings in a month.
Prior to this month there were a total of at least ninety-six shootings and ninety-two deaths at Walmart this year; in January there were at least 9 shootings and 12 people dead; February 10 shootings and 6 dead; March 7 shootings, 3 or 4 more off the premises by people involved in crimes at Walmart, and 7 dead; April 10 shootings, another 2 nearby, and 8 dead; May 7 shootings and 7 dead; June 13 shootings and 9 dead; July 9 shootings and 10 dead; August 6 shootings and 9 dead; September 15 to 17 shootings and 9 dead; October 7 shootings and 6 dead; November 13 shootings and 9 dead; this comes to a total of at least one-hundred-sixteen shootings, and one-hundred-three deaths probably more.
There were at least seven deaths as a result of these shootings on the premises, eight if the suicide was a gunshot. Two of those deaths were just below the Mexican border with Arizona, but the rest of the shootings and deaths were in the United States. One of the shootings was followed a sexual assault at gunpoint that took place at Walmart but the shooting took place elsewhere in a stand off with police where barricaded himself inside an apartment complex, and killed himself. There were also three more bodies found in the parking lot including one that was killed elsewhere and driven to Walmart as someone called the police to report his brother was missing and he thought this was his car, which turned out to have his body. The police also found two bodies of the teenage children of a Walmart Santa buried in his back yard. This comes to a total of at least twelve dead, after adding a combat veteran that died in police custody after an incident at Walmart and wasn't reported until weeks later, either on the premises or one suicide that followed the sexual assault but took place nearby, and if you consider the other four related to Walmart the count could be sixteen. There were also more injuries, and several panics or lock-downs as a result of these shootings as always; one of these lock-downs included several schools nearby as a precaution.
At least three of these shootings were officer involved shootings, with one of the deaths killed by an officer, and other an officer firing at a car that hit him, as he tried to get away afterwards, and the third a suspect shooting at the officer stealing a truck and was later arrested. Three of the dead people were suicides, two that were definitely by gunshot, plus the one that didn't specify a cause of death but was probably a gunshot. The last one was a teenager killed in a shooting.
The only one that got much if any national attention was the shooting death of a seven year old girl in Texas, which was reported in the evening news on three consecutive nights, but even that was brief, and the third report, which was the longest didn't even mention Walmart implying that it took place on the road nearby. The reporting in the mainstream media on several of these incidents were slower than usual, and there are a growing number of incidences where they almost certainly changed the headline to omit Walmart's name or in one case the fact that a person in a person involved in a brawl was a Walmart worker. There was one shooting from last month that wasn't reported until the second half of this month, which was added to previous report and is listed below as well, although it wasn't counted as part of this months shootings. Another incident where someone riddled a car with bullets from what a veteran from Iraq said was probably an AK-47, or other automatic rifle, that wasn't reported for eleven days. This person wasn't caught until at least a couple weeks after the fact, and he claimed it was an accident, and he panicked and ran, although it's hard to imagine how anyone can fire that many shots by accident.
Edit, there was also a shooting at the end of the month that wasn't reported for five or six days. The original report of this only included nineteen shootings adding this brought it up to twenty. An additional death was also added, that wasn't reported widely until weeks after the fact when the widow of a combat veteran who died in police custody sought answers. This brings the total deaths to twelve for the month and one hundred and four for the year.
In addition to the seventeen to twenty shootings mentioned, there were two more nearby, one that was in a house right behind Walmart that wasn't related to their business, and another that was an armed robber who robbed both Walmart and a bank getting involved in a shooting at the bank.
Counting the gun crime where there was a shooting at a bank there were at least seventeen or eighteen gun related crimes. One of them was a staged event, presumably to film it, without any actual guns but it did cause a panic, when someone mistook a slap for a gunshot and police were called in for a perceived active shooter. There were also several threats of mass shootings and plenty of armed robberies; and shots fired from a BB gun in another incident.
Northampton Mass. had a strange controversy when Walmart offered to donate a large ammo supply to the police, which police claimed would save them money; however, this was a town with very little violence and murder rates a fraction of the national average so it's hard to imagine why they would need that much ammunition for training. When there were complaints Walmart withdrew the offer, and the chief blamed the social activists for raising questions. However, in his book, "Rise of the Warrior Cop" Radley Balko explained in detail how many police departments were becoming more militant as a result of free surplus military equipment, and it was contributing to excessive use of force with this equipment, indicating the social activists had legitimate concerns.
Walmart is increasing their reliance on more sophisticated surveillance equipment to address their high crime problems without even considering their own polices that contribute to it. One of the leading causes of their high crime problem is corner cutting by not hiring enough employees, especially at self-checkout lanes where a lot of there thefts take place. They're increasingly relying on surveillance to catch people in the act instead of cashiers to help them ring it up which should be considered a form of entrapment. Why cut on cashiers, if your only going to spend that money on people watching on camera? Tax payers foot the bill for the police costs, so they don't seem to care about that. This surveillance is expanding to the parking lot.
George Orwell and other apocalyptic authors predicted something like this; however, instead of the state spying on us it's multinational corporations like Walmart taking over responsibilities previously carried out by the government which is directly accountable to the people.
Walmart often even has a surprising number of vigilantes trying to help catch thief, which the media has been calling "Good Samaritans." This month one tackled a shoplifter as he was running away. Most of these alleged "Good Samaritans" don't know what is going on at the time and often seem to be more concerned about being perceived as a hero that reducing crime. When Walmart workers act like this they're routinely fired, and police don't recommend it. If something goes wrong there's no doubt that neither the police or Walmart will be charged, but the vigilante like the one that shot a diaper thief a few years ago. By reporting on this in this manner the media is encouraging vigilantism, but there's little or no chance they'll be held accountable under the current socioeconomic system.
One of the police officers arresting shoplifters was arrested himself after he took one of the suspects to her hotel room while other officers took her boyfriend to jail and sexually assaulted her. There was also a viral video where police pepper sprayed a man in a wheel chair for not being cooperative with four or five police officers trying to control him, which clearly seemed excessive, even if he was causing problems. And they had at least two attempted kidnappings on the premises.
There were at least four or five brawls at Walmart this month including one involving two Walmart workers, where the headline was changed after the fact to omit the fact that the people involved were Walmart workers. Another incident involving co-workers allegedly resulted when management declined to act on complaints about homophobic harassment, which wasn't reported until weeks after it happened.
Another former employee was sentenced to 37 years in prison for stabbing his former boss, but there's no apparent concern about how they're treating their workers, or if it's contributing to high rates of violence. There was an enormous amount of attention to people "going postal" twenty years ago after only a handful of Post Office workers going on shootings; however Walmart has far more problems with employee conflicts, including many more shootings, although there wasn't one this month.
They claim that there's a growing trend where "Impersonating Walmart workers now a shoplifting fad," as if this is something new. The media never reports on things that are routine activities that happen over and over again until it's virtually impossible to ignore and sometimes even then. They expressed surprise when there were so many razors found in shopping carts, often acting as if they didn't know why, although a few of them reported it was also part of a shoplifting tactic to cut packaging. They still don't reporting on how bomb threats or shootings are routine at Walmart, acting as if each incident is isolated without considering a serious study to understand the problem and learn how to prevent it, presumably because they know some of their profitable policies might be implicated.
There were at least fifteen crashes or chases, often resulting from attempted shoplifting this month, with several of them involving up to ten vehicles hit. One of them was a hit and run of a pedestrian, and police chases for shoplifting's are routine.
They had at least six fires this month with at least five of them a result of arson; five years ago one or two was typical per month, now this is, at most slightly above average. Many past bomb threats arson or many other activities have been a result of people angry at Walmart and their corner cutting, yet there's no research to find out why or how to solve the problem, presumably because those carrying out academic research are funded directly or indirectly by oligarchies or accountable to politicians collecting campaign donations from oligarchies.
There were at least eight knife attacks this month, including at least two stabbings several robberies or fights including an attack on a pregnant woman. There were also plenty of assaults, including one on an officer, and at least a couple pepper spray incidents.
Walmart continues to increase it's reliance on technology, including a patent on a listening devise attached to shopping carts so they can spy on both their customers and workers. They're also increasing their automation while denying that they intend to cut back on workers even more, which follows a consistent pattern of saying what sounds good almost always doing the opposite if it increases profits regardless of promises.
Walmart is also increasing their partnerships with tech and media companies including Google, which ads to the circumstantial evidence that they might be watering down coverage of their crime problems while ignoring the causes of it. They're very selective about acknowledging the best research when it might indicate that their policies are contributing to crime.
They're using their market power to lobby their own customers to allow them to sell more alcohol in Utah; however they routinely try to restrict political activities of worker or consumer rights advocates on their premises, even though they spend money on politics that they get from consumers & with labor from workers, and politicians accepting bribes disguised as campaign contributions let them. This includes constant lobbying for local tax breaks, while they drive other business that pay higher taxes out of businesses so many cities are going broke to cater to Oligarchs.
Walmart had another two recalls of beef over salmonella contamination concerns and ibuprofen; and they're being sued for lead poisoning in toys. They've had several chemical contamination problems often not being able to figure out why, including a chemical spill in Oklahoma.
They've been promoting Charter Schools in black communities which are often the lowest income areas, which has turned out to be a disaster as I pointed out previously in Is Push For Charter Schools Increasing Murder Rates? the cities with the highest amount of Charter Schools also have above average murder rates, often three or four times the national average. This is part of a trend where people in wealthy communities are making policy decisions about policies to control those living in lower income areas so the economy is rigged in their favor, depriving the working class of funds to solve basic problems. If this continues the reduction in violence taking place over the last several decades can be reversed and in some cases it already is, especially when best research is ignored for political reasons.
Their gift cards are also turning into a scam with some of them turning up empty because hackers learned how to make false charges, and even when customers can prove they were false Walmart refuses to pay until they make lots of noise! There are similar problems with electronics where scammers are replacing them with bags of sand somehow, but some of the returns at least are being accepted; and they're requiring some customers to open the packages to make sure the merchandise hasn't been switched, implying it's probably a big problem which they're acknowledging.
There's often a toy drive or some kind of event involving the police, and since there's almost always shoplifting going on at Walmart it's not surprising that one of them got caught during this toy drive by the police. Another shoplifter managed to get out the door with a huge flat screen TV, but his only get away was a scooter that was waiting for him. He dropped the TV before his get away which was caught on camera, so he didn't get far.
If you ever think you can steal a police cruiser after getting locked in the back with handcuffs on you won't be the first one to do so but it's unlikely you'll get far, and they might add a lot more time on to your sentence.
They don't like it when you embarrass the police that way.
I don't know how often pranksters spit into salsa or something putting it back on the shelf, but in this case they claim they wound up buying it. I don't know how many people believe them. It turned out that the store didn't believe it since a follow up article reports they replaced all the Salsa on the shelf.
Walmart workers that are angry at their bosses often quit quit loudly making a lot of noise on their way out letting people know how bad it is, but more often than not they don't go on the intercom saying "Nobody should work here — ever," like one teen did this month.
He might be right.
Strange things happen at Walmart!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in December 2018. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart leads the way ... in floor scrubbing robots? 12/03/2018
Walmart is set to put a bunch of floor scrubbing robots to work in its stores by the end of Jan 2019. It's another foray into automation for the brick-and-mortar megastore, which has been deploying cutting edge automation and AI solutions in a bid to lean its operations and cut into Amazon's efficiency edge.
The automated floor scrubbers are powered by an OS built by Brain Corp., a San Diego-based company that's been finding lucrative automation contracts with the likes of SoftBank and others.
Brain Corp.'s BrainOS maps routes via demonstration. Walmart associates walk the floor guiding the scrubbing robots along a quick demonstration route. From then on, Brain Corp's AI kicks in and the robot scans the area that needs to be cleaned while watching out for people or new obstacles via onboard sensors. Complete article

Waterloo Iowa City Council considers paying Walmart for sewer easement 12/02/2018
WATERLOO — The last properties needed for a major sanitary sewer project along San Marnan Drive could be secured this week.
Waterloo City Council members are scheduled Monday to consider paying nearly $123,700 to Walmart for permanent and temporary easements behind its store at 1334 Flammang Drive in the Crossroads Center area.
The easements would clear the way for the city to begin construction next spring on the more than $4 million Dry Run Creek interceptor sewer project, which has been planned for nearly four years.
The project is related to a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice requiring the city to make improvements to relieve overloading of its sanitary sewer system. Complete article

Georgia man arrested after assaulting man in Hampstead Md. Walmart parking lot, police say 12/03/2018
A Georgia man was arrested Nov. 29 after he allegedly assaulted a man in the Hampstead Walmart parking lot.
Carl Alton Tabb, 56, of Suwanee, Georgia, was charged with one count each of first- and second-degree assault. He is being held without bond as of Nov. 30, according to electronic court records.
According to the statement of probable cause, Maryland State Police troopers and Hampstead police responded to a report of a man with a handgun at Walmart. Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper found Tabb in a white truck with a black BB gun on the floor between his feet.
Tabb told the trooper that while he was shopping, he was approached and asked to move his truck, and that when he went to move his truck, he was approached by another truck driver who became verbally aggressive. Tabb told the trooper he thought the other driver was going to punch him and retrieved the BB gun from his truck, but didn’t know it was a felony, according to the statement.
The other driver told the trooper that he asked a Walmart manager to find the person whose truck was blocking the loading bay after an hour of waiting, and that when Tabb came out, he “became irate and began cussing at him,” and “was yelling profanity and acted like he was going to strike him,” the report states.
The driver told the trooper that Tabb retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and returned, pointed the gun to his head and said, “What you going to do now punk?” according to the statement. Complete article

Walmart gives employees VR combat training for holiday rush 12/05/2018
Walmart is doubling down on its enterprise VR training experiment over the holidays. According to insiders, the company has trained more than a million associates across its stores using VR technology to prepare for the holiday rush.
That follows the announcement in September that Walmart was acquiring more than 17,000 Oculus Go headsets for its associate training by the end of the year. It's one of the largest VR-based employee training programs in the world, and the industry has been watching it like a canary in a coal mine.
According to Walmart, VR allows its associates to interact with simulated customers in ways they wouldn't be able to with pictures or words on paper. At its best, VR can simulate a realistic environment that's also a safe place to learn and make mistakes in real time.
Black Friday, which is commonly described as a lawless siege on brick & mortar stores by deal-obsessed patrons, is a good example of a high stress situation that's difficult to prepare for with traditional employee training. Walmart evidently gave some of its associates a simulated taste of situations they might encounter on the busiest retail day in the country. Complete article

Walmart is reportedly testing a burger-flipping robot as the company doubles down on automation 12/10/2018
Walmart is testing a burger-flipping robot.
Flippy, a robot developed by Miso Robotics to act as a kitchen assistant, is now being tested in Walmart's Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters, Yahoo Finance reports. Flippy — which can grill 150 burger patties an hour— currently costs between $60,000 and $100,000.
While Flippy is only being tested at Walmart's headquarters now, the robot could begin taking over some repetitive tasks in Walmart delis' kitchens if the test goes well. Flippy is intended to act as an autonomous arm, moving chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks into the correct fryer, evenly cooking them, and then removing the basket of fried food from the hot oil. Walmart in Texas wrongly fired woman in immigration case, Justice Department says 12/10/2018
FORT WORTH The Justice Department reached an agreement with Walmart Inc. after claims were made that a Walmart store in Fort Worth violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by unlawfully requesting specific work authorization documents from non-U.S. citizens based on their citizenship status.
An investigation was sparked after a lawful permanent resident alleged that the Walmart store at 2900 Renaissance Square fired her on her first day of work because she couldn’t fulfill a human resources request for a document issued by the Department of Homeland Security. She had already provided other documents that were sufficient enough to establish her work authorization, the Justice Department said Monday.
When the woman protested her firing, a regional supervisor and hiring staff member at another nearby store incorrectly reaffirmed the unnecessary request for a DHS-issued document. Complete article

Man Nearly Killed By Homophobic Co-Worker Says Nevada Walmart Ignored Complaints Of Harassment 12/10/2018
Vincent Shaver and his partner were brutally assaulted while neighbors watched.
On Nov. 29, Vincent Shaver finished his shift at a Walmart in Las Vegas, Nevada and his boyfriend Charles Clements picked him up. Little did they know they were being followed home by an alleged homophobic co-worker who Shaver had reported, though Walmart did nothing. As we reported earlier today, they were attacked at their home, assaulted, stabbed and neighbors did not help them.
Shaver, 31, spoke on “The Clay Cane Show” on Sirius XM Urban View today and said about one of the alleged assailants, “I really didn’t know him, me and him just seen each other in passing. When he found out I was gay at the job through co-workers he started saying crazy words to me. Like, derogatory words like, “You’re gay, you’re an abomination, you’re not supposed to be here, just crazy stuff.”
Shaver also said that as they were being attacked, the two men said hateful names, like they were abominations and needed to die. Shaved explained, “We told the police that — that’s why we are lost on why it’s not getting treated as a hate crime.” Complete article

Police chase begins at Moultrie Walmart ends with crash in Morven Ga. 12/11/2018
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Two Valdosta men are in jail and another is on the run after a high-speed chase that started at the Moultrie Walmart and ended in a car crash just inside Morven.
Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Katrina Johnson said three men parked a Hyundai Accent in the Walmart parking lot around 6:30 p.m. Friday and one went into the store. About that time, an off-duty Colquitt County auxiliary deputy parked nearby.
The man came running from the store with a buggy of merchandise, Johnson said, and he beat on the window to get his buddies to help him unload the shopping cart. They did so hastily, got back in the car and drove away.
The off-duty deputy thought that looked suspicious, so he followed the Accent and radioed the tag number to the 911 Center. Active duty officers responded, and one of them turned on his lights and siren to get the car to pull over.
“That’s when the high-speed chase began,” Johnson said.
The pursuit went down Highway 133, through Berlin and into Brooks County. Speeds were estimated at more than 100 miles an hour, Johnson said.
When they entered the city limits of Morven, the Accent tried to pass two semi trucks, but the driver lost control, ran into a ditch and flipped seven times. Complete article

N.Y. Attorney General sues Target, Walmart over sale of lead-contaminated toy 12/13/2018
New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced a lawsuit Thursday against major companies for selling a lead-contaminated toy.
The lawsuit alleges that Walmart, Target and importer LaRose Industries, committed thousands of violations of multiple state laws by selling “Cra-Z-Jewelz” Jewelry-Making Kits with high lead content between 2015 and 2016.
“No parent should have to worry that their child’s toy may be toxic. As we allege, these companies imported and sold toys with dangerous levels of toxic lead, jeopardizing the health of New York’s children and breaking the law,” said Attorney General Underwood.
The Attorney General's office purchased kits from stores in New York City, Long Island, Syracuse and Buffalo which revealed that the wristbands associated with the kits, contained lead at levels of 120-980 parts per million.
Target and Walmart have refused requests from the Attorney General's office to ensure that they do not import or sell other toys that will place risk to children from lead exposure. Complete article

Amazon and Walmart add more robots, but insist they won’t terminate jobs 12/15/2018
Since Amazon bought warehouse robotics company Kiva Systems in 2012, its efforts in automation have been well known. The retail and tech powerhouse has introduced its cashierless Amazon Go stores, flirted with plans for drone deliveries, and rolled out tens of thousands of robots to shuffle goods around its fulfillment centers.
“In fulfillment centers that have drive units, we’re able to store up to 40% more inventory and move customer orders in a faster, more efficient way,” wrote VP of robotics Brad Porter in an email to Fast Company, referring to the Kiva-derived warehouse transport bots. “As a result, we can make faster deliveries, offer lower prices, and ultimately, deliver a better customer experience.”
But Amazon hasn’t been alone in pushing to bring robotics to the world of retail. Archrival Walmart has been adding bots to many of its warehouses and stores. A grocery distribution center in Shafter, California, is set to open in 2020, with new technology in place to shuttle even perishable goods around the warehouse without damaging them. In a Salem, New Hampshire, Walmart, automated carts will soon shuttle components of online grocery orders from an attached warehouse to be packaged up by human workers. Complete article

Walmart secured a patent to eavesdrop on shoppers and employees 12/21/2018
Walmart was granted a patent this week for a new listening system for its retail stores that, if ever deployed, may make some employees and shoppers uncomfortable. According to the filing and claims, it’s “an example system for capturing and analyzing sounds in a shopping facility.” In other words, it’s a kind of surveillance system.
For example, this proposed listening system would be able to detect the rustling of shopping bags and the beeps at a register. Walmart could use this tech as an anti-theft solution to find out if number of items in a transaction and number of bags used checks out. It sounds like a reasonable application of technology in a major retail store, right?
That’s where the intrigue stops and the anxiety begins. The system wouldn’t just be an anti-theft tool, but a way to also monitor employee interactions with customers and possibly monitor what customers are saying in real time about products. “Additionally, the sound sensors can capture audio of conversations between guests and an employee stationed at the terminal,” the patent reads. “The system can process the audio of the conversation to determine whether the employee stationed at the terminal is greeting guests.”
Advanced monitoring systems to track shoppers (and employees) isn’t exactly an original idea. Walmart’s retail rival Amazon has been busy testing its cashier-less Go retail stores for two years now, of which it now has nine locations. Those stores monitor the individual movements of shoppers and employees, all the way down to your gait and physical appearance, to keep track of which items you take off shelves, so Amazon can charge you automatically when you walk out. Walmart, Hayneedle test visual search technology 12/21/2018
Home furnishings e-retailing site Hayneedle is testing new visual search technology developed by Walmart Labs that matches shoppers’ photos of furniture they like with something similar on the site, TechCrunch reported.

“If we look at how we can enable that shopping experience…and give them more confidence in their purchases and their ability to find products, visual search plays an incredible role.” Complete article

Walmart heirs promote charter schools among black community 12/24/2018
Amid fierce debate over whether charter schools are good for black students, the heirs to the Walmart company fortune have been working to make inroads with advocates and influential leaders in the black community.
The Walton family, as one of the leading supporters of America’s charter school movement, is spreading its financial support to prominent and like-minded black leaders, from grassroots groups focused on education to mainstream national organizations such as the United Negro College Fund and Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, according to an Associated Press analysis of tax filings and nonprofit grants data.
“Those closest to the challenge often have the best solution,” said Marc Sternberg, who leads the Walton Family Foundation’s education efforts.
Charter schools, which are publicly funded and privately operated, are often located in urban areas with large back populations, intended as alternatives to struggling city schools. Black enrollment in charters has doubled over the course of a decade, to more than 760,000 students as of 2015-16, according to the latest federal data, but the rise also has been marked by concerns about racial segregation, inconsistent student outcomes, and the hollowing-out of neighborhood public schools.
While some black leaders see charters as a safer, better alternative in their communities, a deep rift of opinion was exposed by a 2016 call for a moratorium on charters by the NAACP, a longtime skeptic that expressed concerns about school privatization, transparency and accountability issues. The Black Lives Matter movement is also among those that have demanded charter school growth be curbed. ......
Andre Perry, an education policy expert at the Brookings Institution, said the Walton foundation’s reliance on black faces to makes its case for charters suggests that they’re exploiting black people for a “white agenda.” Complete article

India Curbs Power of Amazon and Walmart to Sell Products Online 12/26/2018
The Indian government dealt a surprise blow on Wednesday to the e-commerce ambitions of Amazon and Walmart, effectively barring the American companies from selling products supplied by affiliated companies on their Indian shopping sites and from offering their customers special discounts or exclusive products.
If strictly interpreted, the new policies could force significant changes in the India strategies of the retail giants. Amazon might have to stop competing with independent sellers and end its offerings of proprietary products like its Echo smart speakers in India, its top emerging market.
For Walmart, which spent $16 billion this year to buy 77 percent of Flipkart, India’s leading online retailer, the new rules could hamper its strategy of selling clothing and other products under its own private brands and prevent it from using its supply-chain expertise and clout with retailers to drive down prices for Indian consumers. Southern Utah man’s $300 Walmart gift card turns up empty; tips to avoid gift card fraud 12/27/2018
ST. GEORGE — If your newly gifted or purchased Walmart gift card showed a zero balance this holiday season, you might not be the only one.
Ben Coulter was preparing to purchase Christmas gifts last week when a Walmart associate said his gift card had a zero balance on it. The $300 Walmart gift card was gifted to him in November and he spent only about $90 on small household items, such as groceries, Coulter told St. George News,
When he got home, he went online to try to find where the near $210 left on his gift card went. Customers are able to track transactions on Walmart’s website by typing in the gift card’s number and PIN. When Coulter was scanning through the transactions, he noticed an online purchase that he didn’t make.
“I didn’t worry too much about it because I just assumed Walmart would hook me up with the $209.45, and I would be taken care of,” he said.
After calling a Walmart corporate number, he was told that it was a man in Las Vegas who made the purchase. He had bought projectors and big-screen TVs, and had different gift card numbers other than Coulter’s. After Walmart acknowledged the issue, Coulter said they still couldn’t do anything to refund the money.
According to Walmart’s gift card terms and conditions, a lost or stolen gift card can’t be replaced, even if it’s used by a third party through your Walmart account. Complete article

Scammers replaced pricey electronics sold at Walmart to Carroll County Md. residents with bags of sand 12/28/2018
Carroll County residents have found a sneaky new scam tactic used on electronics sold at Walmart this holiday season, leaving them with boxes of sand or stuffing instead of expensive gifts.
One resident, Teresa Gostomski of Marriottsville, opened a shrink-wrapped box Christmas morning to find a bag of sand when her daughters Kelly and Claire gifted her a Google Home Hub purchased from the Ellicott City Walmart last week.
“I didn’t even open it right away,” Gostomski told the Times. “It was later that evening, I asked my husband, ‘Can you get me a knife so I could slit open the plastic,’ which I did.
“Honestly, I moved [the bag of sand] out of the way and said, ‘What? It’s hidden very well,’ then realized, ‘Oh my gosh, [the sand bag] is the only thing in there,’” she said. “My daughter was sitting with me, she was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ” .....
“A friend of mine, who is the sheriff now of my hometown back in Kentucky, posted on his Facebook yesterday,” Bentley wrote. “He stated that the local Walmart and Kroger is having anyone that buys electronics or console games, open them at checkout, because they had so many returns.
“They have found bags of sand, salt and even rocks in packages, games gone or switched out with blank CDs ... it's apparently everywhere,” she wrote. Complete article
