Non-violent grass roots reform and Democracy: Can Zionists Defend Their Agenda Without Suppressing Academic Freedom?

Under the current circumstances, the answer clearly appears to be NO; however, only those checking more reliable sources would know this, since mainstream media doesn't cover it, and the Zionists have been surprisingly successful at suppressing academic freedom.

But they haven't completely hidden the truth, since there are alternative media outlets reporting it, and many academic books exposing their lies, including some that report specifically on how Zionists are suppressing academic freedom, and indoctrinating Israeli children, and to some degree the rest of the world.

I went into this previously in Is the Hasbara Handbook The True Protocols of Zion? which is mostly a guide for college students or online Israeli propagandists; but there's much more censorship in the media and the academic world. This article focuses primarily on attempts to suppress academic freedom by Israel, but there are other aspects of their efforts to control the narrative which is well documented by credible sources, often from words or actions of Zionists to prove their case, which are far more credible than "The Protocols of Zion," which, as I said in the previous article really are a hoax, and other anti-Zionists have debunked that while proving other credible claims about controlling the media.

In addition to suppressing academic freedom, Israel, the United States Government and other powerful allies have been intimidating and firing many people for speaking the truth about the Gaza genocide and other atrocities, and lying about them, including restaurant workers, teachers, reporters, and many more people, some listed at the bottom of this article. In the previous article about the Hasbara Handbook I mentioned there were over half a dozen books, possibly much more, solely about how Israel suppressing academic freedom, and dozens if not hundreds more history books exposing their lies that they've tried to suppress. The books about suppressing academic freedom will be listed at the beginning of external sources below, and added to the much longer Bibliography of Books on Israel History & Credible Alternative News Outlets mentioned in previous articles, which continues to grow, although I have no longer read or reviewed all of them, but I have good reason to believe most are good and available free.

One of the academics writing about suppressing academic freedom is Ilan Pappé, who was apparently raised as a Zionist, but as he explains in his book Out of the Frame: The Struggle for Academic Freedom in Israel 2010 as he studied their own history he realized that the things he was taught as a child were false, like many other former Zionists who became anti-Zionists. He goes on to describe how there was a group of "New Historians" starting in the late eighties through the nineties, that corrected many biases in their history, and they began correcting them; this is confirmed by several of the other "New Historians" including Avi Shlaim and Eugene Rogan. He writes that:

Luckily for me, the debate on Israel's history in general and on the 1948 war in particular was reactivated only after I had received tenure. Attaining tenure is a painful process for most young academics in Israel; it was doubly difficult for me given my views, which were already quite well known. ("Out of the Frame" Pappé p.30)

Unfortunately only a quarter of this book is available free online, and I don't have a complete copy now, but another academic who also writes about the Israeli threat to academic freedom is Matthew Abraham author of "Out of Bounds: Academic Freedom and the Question of Palestine" 2014 For starters, as I pointed out in my last article, he claims that academic freedom is needed to figure out the truth, even if people disagree with some views, or they may be false, and then they can check facts to find out which version is true, and Louis Brandeis, a former Supreme Court Justice, and one of the most prominant Zionists before World War II, indicated he agreed, in a quote from my previous article. He indicated this when he wrote:

There is a great deal of law review scholarship covering the debate about whether or not academic freedom is an individual or an institutional right.5 For my purposes, I am going to simplify this debate by simply stating that academic freedom is the freedom to pursue the truth within scholarship for the benefit of the public. The debates about institutional and academic freedom obscure what scholarship should be about: truth-telling and the betterment of society through the enlightenment of the citizenry about difficult issues. The insistence that academic freedom brings with it certain responsibilities seems to serve a normalizing function, an insistence that academic pursuits be conducted with a certain propriety, tone, and perhaps most importantly within certain ideological bounds. This requirement that scholars respect the dignity and feelings of others, while avoiding sensational and intemperate language, is actually an attempt to contain radical and unsettling thought. (Abraham "Out of Bounds" 2014 p.9)

When people do disagree on the truth, those with the evidence on their side shouldn't have to resort to censorship, or attempted censorship, since they will eventually be able to check facts, refute false claims, and prove themselves correct; unfortunately, as Matthew Abraham and other academics show, those with more political power often use appeals to emotion and false accusations of bigotry to attempt to justify censorship, and in many cases, it's clear that they can't make their case by honest means. Abraham's book, along with other books about academic freedom, and many more recent events clearly show this. Unfortunately the best evidence is absent from traditional media, and it will take time to convince people at the grassroots their government and media is lying to them, and in the meanwhile the atrocities and mass murder by Israel continue.

Abraham explains this throughout his book, including the following excerpt:

Noteworthy in this respect are the number of tenure and promotion cases involving scholars engaging the Israel-Palestine conflict which have received substantial press coverage largely because of the outside pressure placed upon the university’s decision-making processes about these scholars’ credentials. In principle, professors should never face professional retaliation or administrative censure in the pursuit of telling the truth.11 However, this ideal state of affairs is increasingly distant from the present reality in the contemporary academy, where issues of societal concern are sometimes deliberately avoided precisely because they are difficult, divisive, and controversial. The Question of Palestine is one such issue. The Question of Palestine, another name for the Israel-Palestine conflict and the power of American Zionism, is “the last taboo in American life,” to borrow a phrase from Edward Said.12 The Question of Palestine is the last taboo in American life because the American public has been not only deprived of the relevant information about the conflict by its own government and media, but because people who have sought to bring the truth to light have been silenced in the course of seeking to reframe the Israel-Palestine conflict with respect to international law. What should be a straightforward approach to analyzing the conflict has become a veritable taboo, as many significant Americans such as Jimmy Carter have learned. (Abraham "Out of Bounds" 2014 p.15)

Abraham writes about numerous cases of suppression of academic freedom in this book including against Noam Chomsky, Edward Said, distorting the view of Rachel Corrie, but he spends the most time discussing Norman Finkelstein and efforts to block or force a rewriting of his book "Beyond Chutzpah" often led by Alan Dershowitz, who's work has been widely discredited by this book and several other sources, including Alfred McCoy "A Question of Torture." He also promises to follow up with another book discussing efforts to suppress the academic freedom of Jimmy Carter, John Mearsheimer, Stephen Walt, Joel Kovel, Joseph Massad, Nadia Abu-Haj, Sami Al-Arian, William Robinson, and Terri Ginsberg, but unless he dis this in Intellectual Resistance and the Struggle for Palestine 2014 by M. Abraham it doesn't appear to have come out yet, but other sources have discussed this at least about the first three, which I'm familiar with.

Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History 2008 by Norman Finkelstein is the book I mentioned in my previous article about Hasbara that convinced former AIPAC member Rich Forer to leave AIPAC and become a human rights defender as shown in this video and he went on to write at least two books on the subject, "Breakthrough: Transforming Fear Into Compassion - A New Perspective on the Israel-Palestine Conflict" 2010 and "Wake Up and Reclaim Your Humanity: Essays on the Tragedy of Israel-Palestine" 2020, adding to the list of former Zionists with good intentions checked their facts and abandoned Zionism because he realized his beliefs were false and didn't make any sense. At the beginning of his video he explains that he would only trust Jewish people to discuss their history and later admits that only trusting Jews was "radical" and at first he thought Norman Finkelstein might have been a "self-hating Jew" which seems to be a term that few people besides Zionists consider credible, and he no long thinks that way. He then goes on to explain how he thoroughly fact checked "Beyond Chutzpah" hoping to debunk it, but instead he realized that he was the one that was wrong. Apparently he went into more detail of this transformation in his first book "Breakthrough" which I haven't read yet, except for a few free excerpts, but fortunately the Kindle isn't to expensive.

As I said, I've seen over half a dozen, if not over a dozen, relatively high profile former Zionists check facts and publicly speak out against Zionism, and probably well over a dozen, if not several dozen, lower profile Zionists do the same, although they don't get nearly as much attention, and they often tell their stories about how they realized they were lied to and few, if any, of them did so because of resentment. One of the other most vocal former Zionists was also an AIPAC member and employee who helped them create absurd propaganda as indicated in this video of Michael Jay (M.J.) Rosenberg first posted in 2015 where he admitted to his previous activities and exposed how AIPAC used secrecy because they couldn't accomplish their goals publicly, and discusses the absurd propaganda he previously helped create. And they often tell about how they were intimidated not to speak out and to continue support the false Zionist version of history and current events, even though the evidence doesn't support it; the implication is there may be many more, whether it's hundreds, thousands, or possibly millions of Jews disagreeing with the false Zionist narrative.

Norman Finkelstein's book "Beyond Chutzpah" is not one of the more than half a dozen books I mentioned that focus almost entirely on suppressing of academic freedom, but he does report on some suppression of academic freedom and he debunks an enormous amount of false reporting, often disguised as academic work, focusing mainly on "From Time Immemorial" by Joan Peters and "The Case For Israel" by Alan Dershowitz, both which were highly incompetent, yet they were both praised by many media pundits and so-called experts. Finkelstein first debunked "From Time Immemorial" in the 1980s when he was a student, showing that those praising it had major credibility problems since they were praising a false version of history that couldn't stand up to the most fundamental fact checking. This is a book that Rich Forer claims he accepted almost as a Bible for the history of Israel before reading "Beyond Chutzpah" and realizing he was decieved, in one of his videos and presumably his book. This was also discredited by many Israeli historians who easily proved that it was false. Apparently, as "Beyond Chutzpah" points out, Alan Dershowitz made virtually identical claims, often using the same sources, which lead Finkelstein to believe that it was virtually guaranteed to be a plagiarization of "From Time Immemorial" which he calls a hoax. Matthew Abraham may do as much if not more to explain Dershowitz's efforts to censor or retaliate agasint Finkelstein for exposing his hoax, than Finkelstein does in "Beyond Chutzpah" instead of defending his false claims.

The amazing thing is that there are a few fundamental facts about the history of Zionism and creation of Israel that traditional media and the political establishment refuse to report on, because the true history exposes atrocities committed by Zionists and Israel. I've gone into some of this history in previous articles, so I'll only repeat a short version. Modern Zionism escalated in the 1890s when Theodor Herzl wrote "Der Judenstaat" or "The Jewish State" and he began organizing Zionists to migrate to Palestine and eventually take over with a Jewish majority, which didn't happen until about forty-four years after his death in 1904, but other Zionists continued his plans often using his tactics, which did not involve negotiating or consulting with the Palestinians that lived there or owned property. In Herzl's diaries he describes how he met with at least six high profile government officials, and many more lower ranking government officials, often while trying to arrange meetings with higher ranking officials, to try to advance the Zionists cause, but none of them, with the possible exception of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, had any legal right to control Palestine, and the Sultan only had control of it at the time because of previous conquest from his ancestors, which was never a democratic right.

There's no record of him attempting to negotiate with Palestinians themselves in his diaries, but there is at least one reference to attempts to use coercion and deception to get Palestinians to leave their land, and many other requests for his associates to keep their activities secret, although this didn't always happen, and a lot of their activities were made public, including ads to recruit Jewish people to colonize Palestine. I've read quite a bit about this subject, but I haven't found many, if any efforts by either Theodor Herzl or other high profile Zionists to negotiate with Palestinians that actually lived in Palestine, or owned land there, but there was one effort by a notable Palestinian, and Mayor of Jerusalem who contacted him, which was told in Hundred Years' War on Palestine 2021 by Rashid Khalidi. This Mayor, Yusuf Diya-uddin al-Khalidi, was one of his ancestors brother who sent a Letter to Theodore Hertzl March 1 1899 and as Rashid Khalidi explains in his book Theodore Herzl wrote back March 19 1899 relatively soon with what Rashid Khalidi considered a condescending reply that didn't address the concerns and many historians, including, apparently, Benny Morris, took this letter out of context giving people a misleading impression.

This escalated during the First World War when the allies, including Britain and France made contradictory promises to both the Zionists and Arabs, including the Palestinians, but after the war they broke the promises to the Arabs, including the Palestinians, that actually lived in the Middle East, so they could keep a promise to the Zionists, who didn't own a lot of property at the time and there were much fewer Jews in Palestine, known as the Balfour Declaration, allowing increased Jewish immigration despite opposition from Palestinians that actually lived there and owned the land. The French did as much if not more to suppress self-determination in the Middle East than Britain, but Britain had control of Palestine, Jordan and Iraq, while France controlled Lebanon and Syria, and they sent in the French military to suppress Arab rule by Prince Faisal. However, since Britain controlled Palestine they did much more to suppress the rights of Palestinians and enable Jewish migration that eventually.

Once you understand this, it's clear it was the Palestinians that were the victims of the Zionists from the beginning, and it just got worse from there, if you look at uncensored history not controlled by Zionist propaganda. The Jews were of course victims from Pogroms that went back centuries before Herzl escalated the modern Zionist movement, and the Holocaust later, but tehy began planning the theft of Palestinian land before they knew about the Holocaust. more importantly it was European Christians responsible for both the Pogroms and the Holocaust, not the Palestinians, so Zionists obviously blamed the wrong people. In the 1930s Zionists escalated terror campaigns against Palestinians, and sometimes against the British. The establishment was more inclined to call the Zionists terrorists when they attacked the British, even though the British was an occupying power, than when they terrorized Palestinians, because this a is routine way of describing terrorism, those opposing those in power are labeled terrorists regardless of any legitimate definition of terrorism.

Then, of course, there was the Nakba when the Zionists committed mass murder of 15,000 Palestinians and terrorized and expelled 750,000 more so they could steal their land and create the State of Israel. Once you understand that the founding of Israel was based on terror, mass murder and massive theft of land then it's clear that not only should we avoid automatically declare Israel has a right to exist, but we should acknowledge that they created their country by force and criminal activity and they should not have the right to exist.

Once people understand this, it's clear that the Palestinians were the victims from the beginning! Yes, Jews should be protected from opression; but the way they chose to do it was to do many of the same things done to them, to the Palestinians who weren't responsible for Jew's suffering.

There's another seventy-seven years of history, of course, but the rest of this has been falsely misrepresented in traditional media while the truth is reported by more credible historians ignored by politicians who base policies on lies. I've gone into some of this in my other articles and the books cited in my bibliography go into much more detail, but only a fraction of the people checking more credible sources are aware how much our government and media censor the truth and base decisions on lies!

One of those credible sources is "Beyond Chutzpah" and Finkelstein writes about an enormous amount of atrocities committed by Israel since the Nakba and provides many credible sources, often from Human Rights sources that the media ignore when they're criticizing our allies, but promote when they're criticizing our enemies like Russia. Finkelstein provides dozens if not hundreds of reports of violations against Palestinians, and in some cases, Israelis from Human rights groups including Human Rights Watch, Jenin: IDF Military Operations (New York, 2002); Amnesty International, Shielded from Scrutiny: IDF Violations in Jenin and Nablus (London,2002); B’Tselem, Trigger Happy: Unjustified Shooting and Violation of the Open-Fire Regulations during the al-Aqsa Intifada (Jerusalem,2002); Amnesty International, Killing the Future: Children in the Line of Fire(London,2002); Amnesty International, Israel Must End Its Policy of Assassinations (London:July 2003); Human Rights Watch, Erased in a Moment: Suicide Bombing Attacks against Israeli Civilians (New York, 2002) and many more listed in the sources of his book, including some that I posted below. In fact if you check the articles or reports from these organizations you may find they do a far better job reporting on important issues than the traditional media, but few people pay attention to them, including me, but now that I see how many reports, including Publications from Human Rights Watch I'll try to check with them more often. When I checked the earliest report related to Israel I found that it was also related to Censorship Israeli Censorship of Arab Publications: A Survey 01/01/1983 and many of the reports that followed were also related to Israel, although traditional media rarely pays attention to many of these reports, especially when they report on abuses by Israel, the United States, or other allies of our government, but on some cases they may report on reports exposing adversaries.

Two of the biggest organizations providing public relations cover or lobbying for Israel are of course AIPAC and the ADL, which claims to be a human rights organization, but a growing number of real human rights or other progressive organizations created Drop the ADL which wrote a Primer paper about a long list of flaws and ways that the Anti-Defamation League is routinely betraying real human rights or other progressive organizations, especially when it comes to reporting on Israel. They often encourage spying on real human rights organizations, and have arranged for police to train with the IDF, often learning abusive tactics against peaceful protesters for many different causes, even those not related to Israel. There are, of course also efforts to Drop AIPAC, which can easily be found if people Google that phrase, or a similar one.

Drop the ADL's Primer is relatively long and they provide dozens if not over a hundred sources including some about how they control propaganda and try to censor the opposition. One good report on this subject is The Palestine Exception to Free Speech 2015 A Movement Under Attack in the US. Their opening Executive Summary says the following, and there's over a hundred pages following this:

Over the last decade, a dynamic movement in support of Palestinian human rights, particularly active in US colleges and universities, has helped raise public awareness regarding the Israeli government’s violations of international law, as well as the role of corporations and the US government in facilitating these abuses. This activism, fueled by Israel’s increasingly destructive assaults on Gaza, presents a robust and sustainable challenge to the longstanding orthodoxy in the United States that excuses, justifies, and otherwise supports discriminatory Israeli government policies.

Fearful of a shift in domestic public opinion, Israel’s fiercest defenders in the United States—a network of advocacy organizations, public relations firms, and think tanks—have intensified their efforts to stifle criticism of Israeli government policies. Rather than engage such criticism on its merits, these groups leverage their significant resources and lobbying power to pressure universities, government actors, and other institutions to censor or punish advocacy in support of Palestinian rights. In addition, high-level Israeli government figures, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and wealthy benefactors such as Sheldon Adelson and Haim Saban have reportedly participated in strategic meetings to oppose Palestine activism, particularly boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaigns.

These heavy-handed tactics often have their desired effect, driving institutions to enact a variety of punitive measures against human rights activists, such as administrative sanctions, censorship, intrusive investigations, viewpoint-based restriction of advocacy, and even criminal prosecutions. Such efforts intimidate activists for Palestinian human rights, chill criticism of Israeli government practices, and impede a fair-minded dialogue on the pressing question of Palestinian rights.

This Report, the first of its kind, documents the suppression of Palestine advocacy in the United States. In 2014, Palestine Legal—a nonprofit legal and advocacy organization supporting Palestine activism—responded to 152 incidents of censorship, punishment, or other burdening of advocacy for Palestinian rights and received 68 additional requests for legal assistance in anticipation of such actions. In the first six months of 2015 alone, Palestine Legal responded to 140 incidents and 33 requests for assistance in anticipation of potential suppression. These numbers understate the phenomenon, as many advocates who are unaware of their rights or afraid of attracting further scrutiny stay silent and do not report incidents of suppression. The overwhelming majority of these incidents—89 percent in 2014 and 80 percent in the first half of 2015—targeted students and scholars, a reaction to the increasingly central role universities play in the movement for Palestinian rights.

The tactics used to silence advocacy for Palestinian rights frequently follow recognizable patterns. Activists and their protected speech are routinely maligned as uncivil, divisive, antisemitic, or supportive of terrorism. Institutional actors—primarily in response to pressure from Israel advocacy groups—erect bureaucratic barriers that thwart efforts to discuss abuses of Palestinian rights and occasionally even cancel events or programs altogether. Sometimes the consequences are more severe: universities suspend student groups, deny tenure to faculty, or fire them outright in response to their criticism of Israel. Meritless lawsuits and legal threats, which come from a variety of Israel advocacy groups identified in this Report, burden Palestinian rights advocacy and chill speech even when dismissed by the courts. Campaigns by such groups have even resulted in legislation to curtail Palestine advocacy, criminal investigations, and filing of charges against activists.

There is now a shocking number of stories being reported on alternative media, mostly from credible sources, but ignored by traditional media, which is often involved in the censorship, about people being fired for protesting against Israeli's actions, including genocide. In all fairness, there's also plenty of stories about Zionist supporters being fired, but tehy often for much more extreme behavior, not peaceful protesters, like a few Zionists angrily telling people "they should be raped," a teacher that threatened to behead a student, and other outrageous activities that actually do justify being fired; while critics of Israel are often fired for telling the truth.

One example is a teacher who was arrested in Israel as told in ‘It is a time of witch hunts in Israel’: teacher held in solitary confinement for posting concern about Gaza deaths 01/13/2024 Another important story is about Emily Wilder, a recent Stanford grad fired from AP job over criticisms of Israel 05/20/2021; what makes this story so important is she's an entry level reporter who was screened out shortly after being hired for political views, and she managed to get some media attention, although most of traditional media ignored it. But, it's important to consider the possibility, or virtual guarantee that many more reporters are being screened out quietly and never receive a job offer in the first place because they publicly defended innocent Palestinians.

Another shocking example is when a high school teacher was fired for telling the truth, when the media and political establishment kept repeating lies so often they seemed like the truth. Over a year ago there was a Protest held over comments about Gaza attributed to Deep Run teacher 02/09/2024 This article reports "The Washington Examiner last month reported that ninth-grade social studies teacher Catherine Massalha went into a '12-minute rant saying the United States is funding a "genocide" in Gaza.'"

The article goes on to quote one parent, Tiffany Sweetser, who says “She was completely sharing one side of information based on her religious political beliefs,” as if some of the facts were a matter of opinion; the truth is that Catherine Massalha knew much more about Palestinian history than this parent was, but since she was repeating lies or distorted versions of the truth that were repeated over and over the parent didn't recognize her own bias was greater than the teachers. She also said “Hamas is a designated terrorist organization. She didn’t share that information,” which is true; however the reason why Hamas was designated a terrorist organization is because those controlling the media ignored the fact that Palestinians were terrorized by Zionists for decades before creating Hamas to fight back. Those controlling the media often portray the victims of government abuse and terror as the terrorists while ignoring the fact that government sponsored violence is often much worse.

This will, of course, seem hard to believe for many people that have been listening to traditional media provide a heavily censored version of history and current events for decades; but the reason we need to defend free speech from all sides is so that we can go through the process of figuring out which side is right, often sorting through the details, where in some cases both sides get some details right, but in many cases one side is far closer to the truth than the other. Those with the most political power and control of the media have the best ability to distort the truth and promote lies, which is why we need to stand up for free speech for all. It's also why governments often get away with so many lies, even leading to genocide, in this case.

The list of other people fired is incredibly long including Marc Lamont Hill, who was relatively well known, fired from CNN, A Freelance Photographer, Hosam Salem, who Was Fired by NYT Over Support for Palestinian Resistance, Susan Sarandon, who got dropped by her agency for benign remarks, despite the fact that Selma Blair, Mayim Bialik, Sara Silverman, Amy Schumer, Juliana Marguiles, etc have posted insane Islamophobic stuff & not one has been fired or dropped by their agency, Hesen Jabr, who was fired from NYU Langone, Briahna Joy Gray, Katie Halper, Melissa Barrera, A Lyft driver named Sergei, A Delta Airlines flight attendant, Adi Angert, an IDF reservist mental health officer critical of Israeli atrocities and the worst IDF members, Jewish Professor Maura Finkelstein, this Middle school special education teacher, and who knows how many other people that were fired without much if any media attention even on alternative media.

Professor John Mearsheimer was correct when he recently said “The single greatest threat to freedom of speech in the United States, at this point in time, is Israel and its supporters in the United States. It's truly amazing the extent to which Israel's supporters are going to enormous lengths to shut down free speech, not only on university campuses, but all across the country.” 03/14/2025

Well over 90% of traditional national media is controlled by only six corporations, and the next half a dozen or dozen biggest media outlets are partly or completely controlled by billionaires, which means a fraction of 1% of the wealthiest people in the country control virtually all traditional media, and a significant portion of those are Zionists. Those who aren't Zionists, among those controlling the media are yielding to the Zionists, and they're obsessed with controlling the lies we use to make decisions about Israel.

Edward Snowden famously stated, "When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are being ruled by criminals." Right now, criticizing genocide is being treated as committing a crime, while supporting genocide is rewarded by our political and media establishment.
