Walmart Crime Report August 2021

Walmart had at least a dozen more shootings in August of 2021 with at least four of them fatal, and at least eleven more injuries. One of the fatal shootings was an officer involved shooting where a suspect who shot at them was killed. Another one of the fatal shootings hardly got any media coverage until seventeen days later when he died of his injuries, adding to the evidence that even some of the worst crimes aren't being reported promptly in a high profile manner, indicating there could be even more that haven't been reported. Almost all of the shootings resulted in deaths or injuries with some more than one.

There were also close to a dozen, if not more, other gun related crimes including several false alarms about active shooters, armed robberies, an argument over excessive towing fees leading to an armed stand-off, and other petty arguments leading to threats of gun violence. Another threatened shootout also involved a police chase and at least two arsons, one at Walmart, the other at a separate location. If actual shooters aren't being reported promptly and consistently there's a good chance many more gun incidents aren't being reported either, since they're considered less important.

In addition to the four killed in shootings there were at least seven more dead bodies found on the premises, one more dead body that was last seen alive at Walmart, another person that was killed after being hit by a car, and a lawsuit about one other dead person who died as a result of injuries sustained at Walmart, allegedly for not maintaining the bathrooms which injured a handicapped person. If you count all of these this comes to fourteen dead bodies, which except for the mass shooting at El Paso and the month where ten bodies were found in a Texas Walmart, plus additional deaths on each of those months, this would be one of the deadliest months at Walmart, if not the deadliest.

There were at least two police officers fired or charged with sexual assault at Walmart last month, including one that was also dismissed for not filing charges against a shoplifter, in addition to inappropriate behavior with a Walmart employee. Another Ex-firefighter went on a racist rant at Walmart, going viral on the internet. Walmart also had another major brawl at one store, an attempted kidnapping or a teen and the courts allowed them to avoid answering questions about their security practices at El Paso as a result of the mass shooting two years ago, which are part of the reason for their high crime problems, although policies like cutting corners, store design, self-checkout and more are as important if not more important to solve their crime problems, but they ignore that too.

One Walmart worker showed how they caught customers when they steal at self-checkouts, but doesn't report on how often it escalates to greater violence, which is quite common. A customer bragged about how she forced workers to check her out and bag her products at the self-checkout as a way to show how displeased she was with their policies, which is a legitimate concern; however many people came to the conclusion that it was racists and humiliated good workers. Even if this wasn't the best way to make a point the point is legitimate, and it's better than a few other outraged people that responded with violence due to lack of cashiers.

In addition to the fatal crash and police chase followed up by a threatened shootout, there were at least seven or eight major crashes, or chases with at least a couple major injuries and one truck that crashed into the store; this is probably a large underestimate since they're often not reported widely. There were also at least four major fires, including the arson previously mentioned and at least two more, the fourth one may also be arson although they didn't report the cause.

Walmart also had at least seven or eight knife attacks or threats, including at least three machete attacks with at least one resulting in injuries, one stabbing and several other threats to stab more people, including one that happened last June, but wasn't reported widely before raising questions about how many major knife threats assaults or other incidents are happening without being widely reported. It's almost certainly much more than most people realize.

Walmart is also going back into panic mode over COVID-19, with at least one outbreak among their staff, and closing dozens if not hundreds of stores across the country for deep cleaning again. Walmart is now mandating vaccines for workers in the corporate office, supposedly because they care about saving lives along with the rest of the corporate world and political and media establishment. However the establishment isn't so concerned with saving lives that they support Medicare for All which is supported by a large majority of the public and according to numerous studies will save thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars every year; nor are they concerned with eliminating or restricting patents, most of which are developed with taxpayer money.

This clearly shows how concerned they really are with saving lives.

There was also an Alabama pastor that went up to a Missouri Walmart store and threatened them with execution if they continued administering vaccinations, especially mandated ones. I'm no fan of these methods or right wing fanaticism, and certainly don't believe most conspiracy theories about are rational and should be trusted. However, even though the establishment experts sound much more rational and I hope they're telling the truth, instead of using good educational tactics to inform the public about the science, they're using massive propaganda tactics, which at times makes me wonder if they're much if any more credible than the conspiracy theorists.

We certainly should be very careful before allowing the government and corporations from depriving the public about choosing their own health care treatments with informed consent.

And of course Walmart had many more lower profile crimes including a woman ramming her cart through a locked door to steal it, a pepper spray incident leading to a couple girls being arrested, a few panics due to a prank call or other false alarm, a couple thefts of $2,000 and $40,000 by customers or employees, and at least one more fight. Walmart also had another employee that was caught putting a camera in the bathroom and was arrested, and presumably fired for it.

Walmart had at least seven major recalls last month including dehumidifiers that may catch fire, hoverboards with defective batteries, cookie cakes, chicken salads, breaded stuffed chicken, and at least two separate potato chip brands. Some of these food items may have listeria, salmonella or pieces of plastic in them. Recalls rarely get much if any attention; one news outlet claims to report on them all, but clearly misses some. This should not be considered a complete list, since there's no way to know if more have happened without being widely reported.

Recent Walmart lawsuits include a couple African Americans, including a pastor and an ex-police officer, who were arrested for returning a broken TV who were falsely accused of presenting someone else's receipt, opioid cases, some of which they're trying to get dropped, a travel mug that exploded after juice fermented in it, a slipped foot mat leading to an accident, a free speech case which was dismissed when they wouldn't let a Trump supporter campaign for him, wrongfully firing an employee with Down syndrome which the EEOC says should lead to more scrutiny, and another suit filed by them to avoid paying property taxes. No small business has the legal funds to avoid these taxes and many of them were put out of business by Walmart who isn't willing to provide enough funds to make up the difference, and can get away with it due to their political and legal connections.

For years Walmart has gradually been cutting so many corners that their products break or wear out much quicker than they used to, which some may think makes their products fake merchandise. Perhaps at least one woman thinks that under these circumstances it would be appropriate to pay for fake merchandise with fake prop money.

Apparently most Walmarts don't allow you to shop naked, whether you're human, a bear, a seagull or a deer. Apparently Walmart has been visited by all of these last month, although the bear went through another grocery store before visiting Walmart's parking lot where he was detained. I don't see why animals shouldn't be able to shop at Walmart, and if the seagull didn't pay for his snack it's probably because he didn't understand our customs and he's not to blame.

These animals are more polite than a Pastor that was stalking a woman and bit a police officer when confronted so I don't see the problem.

For those who were wondering there's no evidence to support the claim that Walmart was “kidnapping kids” and selling them for $5,000 on Walmart.com.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in August 2021. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart Loses One of Its Highest-Ranking Senior Female Officers 08/04/2021

Walmart Inc. said Executive Vice President Chandra Holt is leaving to become chief executive officer of another company, a blow to the retailer’s push to boost diversity in its senior ranks.

Holt, who joined Walmart in 2015 and quickly shot up the ranks to become chief merchandising officer for its digital business, will leave Aug. 6, Executive Vice President Casey Carl said in an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg. Holt, who previously worked at Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. and Target Corp., will join Conn’s Inc., the Texas-based furniture and home-goods retailer said in a separate statement Wednesday.

The departure of Holt, one of the company’s highest-ranking female executives, hurts Walmart’s decade-long push to put more women into upper management. In recent years, the company has seen several departures of high-ranking women, including Roz Brewer, who’s now running rival Walgreens after leaving Walmart for Starbucks in 2017. Walmart has also hired and promoted other female executives, including international chief Judith McKenna and Chief Customer Officer Janey Whiteside. Complete article

Ex-Firefighter in Racist Rant at Walmart Staff Shouts '9/11' and 'Learn English' 08/05/2021

Walmart Skirts Tough Questions About Security Practices Before 2019 Mass Shooting in El Paso Tx. 08/09/2021

EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Walmart (NYSE: WMT) has again gone to the Texas Supreme Court to avoid answering tough questions related to the mass shooting at the El Paso Cielo Vista store in 2019.

Despite rulings from an El Paso trial court and the Texas 8th Court of Appeals that the retailer should provide details about violent crime and security issues at other Walmart stores, the company's lawyers are fighting to avoid making those details public. The legal maneuvers are in response to lawsuits filed by victims, family members and survivors of the Aug. 3, 2019, mass shooting that led to the deaths of 23 shoppers.

According to the lawsuits, Walmart created a "crime magnet," placing profits over safety by not providing adequate private security at the Cielo Vista location. The retailer instead relied on taxpayer-funded police to respond to violent crimes after the fact at the store, which is one of the busiest in the nation. Complete article

Judge dismisses case against Md. Walmart 08/14/2021

A Charles County District Court Judge tossed out a case made by a White Plains man that Walmart Stores Inc. violated his rights in an incident in November 2019.

The verdict came Aug. 11 after some courthouse drama before the case was heard.

District Court Judge Robert Wilcox ruled that Jerry Feith, 79, did not have sufficient evidence that Walmart violated his First Amendment rights when he was asked to leave the store on Nov. 30, 2019.

Feith alleged that when he entered the Walmart on Drury Drive in La Plata, he was asked to leave the store by employees due to wearing a hat in support of former President Donald Trump. ......

Martin Strong, asset protection associate at the La Plata Walmart, testified that Feith was asked to leave after sliding what turned out to be a political pamphlet into his pocket.

Strong testified that he had a previous conversation with Feith about handing out political pamphlets as the store has a no-soliciting policy. Complete article

Man threatens Springfield Missouri Walmart workers, tells them they will be executed for administering vaccines 08/18/2021

Livestreaming on Facebook, a man known online as the "vaccine police" harassed pharmacists at a Walmart in Springfield — saying the workers would be "executed" for administering the COVID-19 vaccine.

Invited from Alabama to last week's Mercy hospital rally, Christopher Key is an entrepreneur who came to prominence after convincing Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis to use his "deer antler spray" to treat his injury.

In recent months, Key has been speaking out against the COVID-19 vaccine. And since the Saturday rally, he has been in Springfield.

Monday evening, Key and his "Missouri crew" entered the Walmart Supercenter west of Springfield on Sunshine Street. Making a beeline to their pharmacy, Key yelled that he was putting the store's workers "on notice."

By the time Key and his group of about a half dozen reached the pharmacy, staff had locked the door, closed the window, and were hiding in the room.

"You are being put on notice!" he shouted outside the door. "And if they give one more vaccine, as of this day after being put on notice, then they can be hung up. And they can be executed." Complete article

Walmart Worker Shows How They Know When Customers Steal From Self-Checkouts 08/17/2021

AWalmart employee has revealed online how staff know exactly when a customer is stealing at the self-checkout machines—a place many previously believed was a blind spot of sorts.

In the video, the employee who uses the online alias @thewalmartguy69, showed a scanner device staff are equipped with, writing: "POV: We know when you're stealing," on screen.

The device is by a popular retail track and trace company Zebra Technologies, which supplies many of the largest stores in the US with scanners and software, including Walmart and Costco.

Employees are able to connect the handheld device to the self-checkout machines, displaying which ones are in use and which are open. The device also gives away what has been scanned at each machine and how many of each item, making it easy for workers to spot those who have items in their hands or bags that haven't been scanned.

"We see everything," he wrote. In later videos, the worker also added that the scanner shows removed items and alerts for required help when a customer selects it on the machine. The video can also be seen in full here. Complete article

Walmart files second appeal on Ellsworth Maine property tax 08/19/2021

ELLSWORTH — With one denied abatement waiting for a State Board of Property Tax Review decision, Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust has filed a second request to pay lower property tax on the Ellsworth Walmart for fiscal year 2021. The earlier abatement request was filed with the city in 2019 for the superstore’s 2017 taxes, and when the city Board of Appeals denied the request, Walmart turned to the State Tax Appeals Board, where its appeal waits to be addressed.

Walmart seeks to cut the assessed value of the Ellsworth store from $20.1 million to $10 million. At stake is as much as $180,000 in property tax for 2017 and each year forward, if the state appeal is successful, as the new assessment would be retroactive to fiscal year 2017.

The tax abatement appeal filed by the mega superstore chain has become standard operating procedure by Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust, which filed appeals for 2017 in at least eight Maine communities where it operates, using the “dark store” theory of assessment. That theory argues big-box retail superstores should be assessed as if they were vacant because of their specialty design, which leaves the properties at a low worth for subsequent buyers. A travel mug's top exploded after juice fermented inside. The mug's Braintree Mass. owner is suing Walmart. 08/20/2021

BOSTON – A Braintree woman is suing Walmart after she says she was severely injured when the top of a travel mug exploded into her face, propelled by fruit juice left alone in the sealed container for 10 days.

Emily Hoard filed the lawsuit in federal court in Boston on Wednesday, claiming losses related to personal injuries because of a breach of warranty and negligence. Court documents do not state how much money she is seeking.

Hoard bought a 24-ounce "Ozark Trail" vacuum insulated stainless steel bottle, a Walmart brand, from the store on Falls Boulevard in Quincy, the suit say.

On Oct. 1, 2018, she filled it with the Arizona-brand mango juice "Mucho Mango." By the end of the day, about one-quarter of the juice was left in the stainless steel bottle, which she put into her backpack, according to the lawsuit.

Ten days later, she went for the backpack and found the steel bottle was still in there. She tried to remove the top by unscrewing the cap, but was at first unable, according to the lawsuit.

"As the plaintiff continued her effort to remove the subject bottle-top, the top suddenly and without warning ejected with enormous force from the subject bottle, striking plaintiff below her chin and lower jaw with extreme velocity, causing massive damage to the plaintiff's jaw and face," according to the lawsuit. In its COVID-19 information guidelines online, Walmart says its stores are mostly open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., unless otherwise mandated, and they're typically closed overnight in order to do more "enhanced cleaning and sanitizing in stores." However, they note, "Stores and clubs may be temporarily closed from time to time as circumstances warrant for additional cleaning and an operational refresh." And that seems to be happening more and more lately, as COVID cases also climb. Complete article

2 Black men accused Tx. Walmart of racial discrimination, saying they were handcuffed and accused of stealing when they tried to return a TV 08/27/2021

Two Black men in their 50s are suing Walmart, alleging that the retailer falsely accused them of stealing when they tried to return a TV.

The plaintiffs Dennis Stewart, a former police officer, and Terence Richardson, a pastor, were handcuffed by the police at a Walmart in the Houston suburb of Conroe, Texas, after trying to return a $300 TV last September, the lawsuit said. Stewart bought the TV earlier in the day but said it wasn't working properly, and so wanted to return it, the lawsuit said.

The two men said that when they went to return the TV, a white employee at the customer-service counter accused them of stealing it and refused to acknowledge their receipt as proof of purchase.

They said the associate called the police. The lawsuit said the police arrived, handcuffed them, and took them to the loss-prevention office, where Stewart was said to have broken down in tears. Complete article

Woman sues Ohio Walmart over mother's death 08/27/2021

LORAIN — A Lorain woman is suing Walmart over the death of her mother.

Stephanie Green filed a wrongful-death suit Friday against the retailer on behalf of her mother, Lillie Laverne Williams. In it, Green alleges Williams died as a result of a cut she received on a bathroom door stall at the Lorain Walmart Supercenter.

The lawsuit states Williams drove her motorized scooter into the handicapped-accessible stall in the women’s restroom. Moving her scooter into the stall, she reportedly experienced severe pain in her lower right leg and saw a “significant amount of blood” accumulating on the bathroom floor from where her leg had been ripped open by a sharp metal object on the front of the bathroom stall door.

The object created a u-shaped gash near her knee. Photos attached to the filing show the injury was deep and required extensive treatment, hospitalization and surgery. Williams reportedly never recovered from her injuries and died Nov. 5. Complete article

Walmart should be under tighter scrutiny because of wrongful firing of employee with Down syndrome, EEOC says 08/28/2021

A jury found Walmart broke the law when it fired a longtime employee with Down syndrome. Now, the U.S. Equal Employment Commission wants the judge to put the nation’s largest private employer on notice to stop that from happening again.

In a motion filed Friday, the federal agency said Walmart should be under tighter oversight for the next five years and required to make clear in company policies that employees with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations.

Plus, the EEOC said, Walmart should be forced to post a sign about the lawsuit and its actions at more than 100 stores. A draft of the memo, which the EEOC made and shared with the judge, lays out why the company was wrong to fire Marlo Spaeth, a longtime employee — and uses it as a cautionary tale about the consequences of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. Every Walmart ought to have a solar roof and/or parking lot | READER COMMENTARY 08/29/2021

Dan Rodricks recently identified the roofs of big box stores as the ideal places to ramp up solar energy generation. He’s absolutely right (”A new Operation Warp Speed is needed, this time for climate change,” Aug. 25). From record heat waves to torrential rains, this summer’s extreme weather is proving that the climate crisis is imminent and urgent. To address the crisis, we need to accelerate the transition to 100 percent renewable energy.

Big box store rooftops and parking lots are perfect places to generate clean energy. Walmart’s U.S. locations alone could produce enough solar photovoltaic capacity to power 660,000 average American homes. Environment Maryland is calling on Walmart to commit to installing solar on all of its viable roofs and parking lots by 2035. The retailer has already pledged to achieve zero emissions by 2040 which is a good start. Complete article
