Walmart Crime Report October 2020

Walmart had at least thirteen shootings in October, including four fatal shootings, and two non-fatal officer involved shootings. There were also numerous other injuries caused by the shootings. One of the shootings was gang related, another was labeled a "duel" although it didn't follow the customs of nineteenth century duels, and at least one other was a result of road rage or other arguments. There were also a couple arrests for a previous murder at Walmart in September.

There were also close to a dozen, if not more, other gun related crimes, mostly armed robberies, plus a couple arguments and an armed man impersonating a federal agent, at Walmart. Walmart began removing all their guns across the country out of fear of unrest, but almost immediately replaced them, without explaining why they reversed their decision.

In addition to the four people killed in shootings there were two more killed in an accident and another two bodies found on the premises, as usual, police were quick to say no foul play was suspected when they find dead bodies on the premises. There was also a missing woman, where her ID was found in a nearby field, with her vehicle being left behind, strongly implying possible foul play.

They also had numerous fights, brawls, sexual assaults, and a robbery suspect that used a taser on an employee. Another police officer was accused of shoplifting at Walmart 14 times, in uniform, on duty. There's at least one more example where a shopper was denied her change, due to alleged shortage of change caused by COVID-19, although I haven't heard of this happening at any other store.

One woman was sentenced to five years for abandoning her kids at a Walmart and telling them to seek help from someone else. We have good research showing how to solve many social problems and save money by addressing them before they escalate, but instead they rely solely in the threat of jail for people who have no resources, even though this has been proven to be far more expensive.

In addition to the two people that died in a crash and another person that had their car stolen at gunpoint, Walmart had more than half a dozen major crashes, stolen vehicles, chases or other vehicle crimes.

Walmart also had more than half a dozen fires at their stores, including several arson, in one case two suspects set at least three different fires at two nearby stores. Some put out quickly, but others were very large.

Walmart also had at least four knife attacks including two stabbings, one that led to charges of attempted murder. Several Walmart employees and a few customers were attacked in half a dozen or so separate incidents, including one where they pepper-sprayed an employee while trying to shoplift. There were at least three or four organized efforts to shoplift massive amounts of money or embezzle from Walmart exposed. There were also riots and looting in Pennsylvania related to police protests after they killed another unarmed black man.

Walmart had another three or four recalls for watermelon and five other fruits that might be contaminated with listeria, and spices, including parsley that might be contaminated with Salmonella.

Walmart is being investigated for their part in the Opioid crisis, and they counter-sued as a defensive measure. Corporations are rarely, if ever, held accountable for massive crisis they cause; the Sackler family recently had to pay out a small fraction of the fortune they made in a guilty plea by their company, which was a cost of doing business. People that die of overdoses caused by large corporations are expendable for both the government and the corporations.

This same company is expanding into the medical and insurance industry even getting a cut of the privatization of Medicare. They're also using their political and legal connections to avoid paying property taxes, creating financial crisis's for many towns that helped them wipe out businesses that were willing to pay their share of taxes.

Walmart was also being sued by several companies or customers that expected lifetime auto care but were denied it when they decided to close their auto centers because of the COVID epidemic and for stealing intellectual property. Suing large corporations like Walmart, especially when they relentlessly stall on everything thanks to their enormous legal budget, is virtually impossible and they often try to force people to settle for petty amounts or wait years making any settlement almost meaningless sine they have to go to so much trouble and routinely get them cut, before finally getting anything, assuming they win, which they usually don't. Workers that want a fair deal have as much, if not more trouble, with the political and economic system rigged against them.

My best guess is that the skunk that forced an Oklahoma store to close down wasn't Pepe La Pew trying to sweet talk a black cat that somehow had a white stripe accidentally pained on her back.

Who ever the skunk was he or she wasn't the one that urinated on the merchandise at an Ohio store, that was a human.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in October 2020. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Walmart to sell UK chain Asda in $8.8 billion deal 10/02/2020

LONDON -- Retail giant Walmart has agreed to sell its British chain of supermarkets, Asda, to the investors behind an international group of gas stations and food shops in a deal that values the company at 6.8 billion pounds ($8.8 billion).

Brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa, along with investors TDR Capital will acquire a majority of Asda, while Walmart will retain a minority stake and a seat of the board, the parties said in a joint statement issued Friday. Details of the deal weren’t released.

Walmart has owned Asda since 1999 but had been looking for a buyer recently to focus on higher-growth markets. Based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Walmart has given up on operations in several international markets over the past 15 years, including Germany and South Korea. In many of these countries, it has lacked the scale to press local suppliers on price as it does in the United States. Complete article

Walmart May Be on the Hook for Billions in Opioid Damages 10/06/2020

"I don't think you can say with a straight face there isn't any evidence of wrongdoing," Laster said during a video hearing, according to Bloomberg.

The lawsuits, Norfolk County Retirement System v. Walmart Inc. and Police and Fire Retirement System of Detroit v. Walmart Inc., were filed in June by two pension funds that own Walmart stock. Walmart lawsuits risk tax losses, Arkansas school districts told 10/03/2020

FAYETTEVILLE -- Lawsuits working their way through Pulaski County Circuit Court could cost $200 million a year in lost property-tax collections for public schools throughout Arkansas, the Washington County assessor told education supervisors Thursday.

Walmart is suing Pulaski County to change the method of appraising 10 stores there. The "dark store" appraisal method it seeks would cut the company's property-tax bill in half, Assessor Russell Hill said. It's the first test of a company trying to force the new method in the state, he said.

A spokesman for Walmart, contacted Thursday, said the company is formulating a response to Hill's remarks. Walmart went to court in Pulaski County in September 2019. At that time, Walmart spokeswoman Delia Garcia said the company is "simply seeking a fair market value for the property taxation of our stores." Complete article

If you recently bought dried parsley at Walmart, you'll want to read this 10/15/2020

The world of organic parsley is in upheaval, ever since a customer tested a batch of the herb distributed by High Quality Organics and confirmed it to be contaminated with Salmonella (via the FDA).

"Salmonella in parsley?" you're asking. Yes, answers scientific journal, Cell Press.

Just like with animals (and eggs) Salmonella bacteria can latch onto the plants surface and infect their insides. That's exactly what happened earlier this year, when a batch of Californian-grown onions were infected with Salmonella, an outbreak which, according to the CDC, sickened 1,127 people and caused 167 hospitalizations across 48 states.

Salmonella poisoning, the FDA warns, can lead to fever, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. In more serious cases, it can cause arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis; in especially serious cases, Salmonella can even lead to death. Complete article

If Walmart wants to hear workers’ voices, it should give us a seat at the table 10/16/2020

This month marks my 20th anniversary as a Walmart associate. Over the last eight months, I’ve seen the panic on workers’ faces as people have called in sick with COVID-19 symptoms, while Walmart gives us no information about whether we need to be tested for the virus too. I’ve also seen coworkers with symptoms afraid to call in sick, because they don’t have enough protected time off and may lose a paycheck, or their job. That’s not right.

Since the pandemic began, the Walton family fortune has swelled by nearly $43.2 billion thanks to Walmart’s hefty stock price gains. Walmart has notched $10 billion in revenue growth. Meanwhile, even after two decades with Walmart, I’m still paid less than $15 an hour. While associates like me are working on the front lines of this dangerous pandemic, making sure customers have groceries, pharmacies, home goods, and more, Walmart has slow-walked its COVID-19 response and keeps secrets about virus outbreaks in our stores.

That’s why Walmart CEO Doug McMillon’s recent folktale in Fortune about having “open ears and an open heart” sounds out of touch to associates like me. What we need is for Walmart to answer our calls for basic protections—more PPE, enforced social distancing, and hazard pay at 1.5 times our hourly wage, to start. And we need a seat at the table shaping company policy at Walmart, with real representation on the board of directors. Complete article

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon on Thursday called on Congress to work together and pass a stimulus deal to help American families and small businesses.

He said lawmakers on both sides of the aisle — including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of Treasury Steve Mnuchin — should hammer out an agreement, even if they need to tinker with it and improve upon it over time. Complete article

The One Thing You Shouldn't Be Doing at Walmart 10/18/2020

Walmart pulled the one-way aisle stickers up off the floor and opened more than one entrance again, but other safety measures are still in place. Don't forget a mask or to stay six feet apart from other customers. It's also best to keep your trips to the supermarket short and sweet—and this is actually one mistake many people are making at Walmart right now.

Though people are going to Walmart less, they're shopping inside for longer periods of time, according to new data. The statistics, released by Placer.ai, show average visits per customer between March and October fell by 13%. Fewer people may be inside a store at any given time, but the amount of time shoppers spend indoors is up by almost 10%, according to The Real Deal. (The next time you need to shop, keep in mind the 8 Grocery Items That May Soon Be in Short Supply.)

As we now know, COVID-19 can be spread through airborne transmission. Because of this, the CDC recommends using online shopping when possible. If you do need to shop in-store, go at off hours during the morning or night. Making a shopping list to help guide you while you're there is one helpful tool for cutting time spent inside, too. Walmart sues government in pre-emptive move ahead of expected opioid lawsuit 10/22/2020

Walmart Inc. sued the federal government in an attempt to strike a pre-emptive blow against what it said is an impending opioid-related civil lawsuit from the Justice Department.

Walmart WMT, 0.04% said the government is seeking steep financial penalties against the retailer for allegedly contributing to the opioid crisis by filling questionable prescriptions.

The suit names the department and Attorney General William Barr as defendants, as well as the DEA and its acting administrator, Timothy Shea. It is seeking a declaration from a federal judge that the government has no lawful basis for seeking civil damages from the company based on claims pharmacists filled valid prescriptions that they should have known raised red flags. Spices Sold at Retailers Like Walmart Are Being Recalled Over Salmonella Fears 10/23/2020

Two companies have issued recalls on their dried spices over fears that the products could contain salmonella, the FDA posted this month.

The first is Sauer Brands, Inc. which voluntarily recalled specific lot codes of more than two dozen spices by The Spice Hunter, including organic parsley, organic cinnamon, Madagascar cloves, gourmet sesame seeds, and more. This occurred because even after raw materials had tested negative for salmonella, the company's supplier notified them of the presence of salmonella in some lots of organic parsley given to them.

Items involved in the recall were distributed in the following states: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. They were also sold online. You can see the full recall, including all spices and specific lot codes involved here.

The second recall comes from Red Monkey Foods which is also voluntarily recalling select spices after salmonella fears stemming from organic parsley. This recall only affects specific lot codes for some of the brand's Herbes De Provence and parsley products, sold under brand names like Great Value and Cost Plus World Market. These were distributed to all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico and sold in retailers like Walmart. You can see the full list of spices and affected lot codes in the recall here. Complete article

Walmart has a grand plan to help suppliers club together to buy green energy 10/23/2020

LONDON — When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, it proved to be a tipping point for Walmart, the world’s largest retailer.

While the business was doing well at the time, it was focused on customers and employees over the broader environment, according to CEO Doug McMillon. “We were a large company but had not fully understood what that meant or what was required of us socially and environmentally,” he said, addressing the Climate Week NYC conference in an online broadcast last month.

“We decided to step up,” McMillon added. “We committed our company to achieving 100% renewable energy, a zero-waste strategy, a more sustainable supply chain and an increase in the minimum wage,” he explained.

Fast-forward to 2020, and Walmart has now made plans to become a “regenerative” company, an announcement it also made at the climate conference. Its environmental goals focus on decarbonization — where it is aiming to emit zero carbon by 2040 — and regenerating the natural world, with a pledge to “protect, manage or restore” a million square miles of ocean and 50 million acres of land by 2030. It also plans to achieve zero waste in its own operations in the U.S., Canada, Japan and the U.K. by 2025. Complete article

Lead plaintiff in $9.5 mln Walmart class action says Morgan & Morgan settled without telling him 10/27/2020

(Reuters) - A Florida man named Vassilios Kukorinis is a big part of the reason why Walmart agreed this summer to a $9.5 million class action settlement in federal court in Miami. Kukorinis is a Walmart shopper who became concerned about overcharges: According to him, Walmart’s charges at the register exceeded what prices should have been based on the store’s posted prices-by-weight.

Kukorinis visited Walmart stores around the state to document this alleged disparity, then brought his evidence to class action lawyers at Morgan & Morgan.

Morgan & Morgan dispatched its investigators to Walmart stores to check out Kukorinis’ allegations. In February 2019, the firm filed a class action complaint with Kukorinis as the prospective lead plaintiff. In November 2019, Kukorinis flew to California with Morgan & Morgan lawyers for a mediation session with Walmart.

Morgan & Morgan subsequently reached a settlement with Walmart’s lawyers at Greenberg Traurig. Though Walmart did not admit to the class’ allegations, it agreed to pay at least $4.5 million and as much as $9.5 million to class members who were allegedly overcharged. Morgan & Morgan moved for preliminary approval of the settlement in August. U.S. District Judge Jose Martinez of Miami granted the motion just two weeks later. The deal called for Morgan & Morgan to be paid as much as $2.375 million in attorneys’ fees and for Kukorinis to receive a $25,000 award for his service to the class. Complete article

Convicted felon caught with gun, drugs after shoplifting attempt at Walmart in Moses Lake Wash. 10/29/2020

MOSES LAKE - A convicted felon is back in jail after allegedly being found with a loaded revolver in his pocket during a shoplifting attempt at Walmart in Moses Lake.

Moses Lake police were called to Walmart on Wednesday after Jorge Suarez Galvan, 25, was attempting to steal items. When confronted by officers, Suarez Galvan reportedly tried to run, only making it a short distance before being taken into custody.

During a search, officers reportedly located a .38 caliber revolver in the suspect’s pocket, along with heroin and the stolen items. Police say Galvan accused officers of planting the gun, drugs and stolen property.

“Oddly enough though, Suarez Galvan said that the cash located in the same pockets was his,” police stated. “Even odder, last week Suarez Galvan argued that officers planted drugs and ammunition in his pocket when he was arrested then too. Unfortunately for Suarez Galvan, video evidence from both arrests refute his contentions.” Complete article

Police: Normal Ill. Walmart doors were boarded up Wednesday after social media posts about looting 10/30/2020

NORMAL — Social media rumors pushed Normal’s Walmart to board up an entrance Wednesday night, but police said no credible threats have been found.

“There was just some stuff floating around on social media about possible looting,” Sgt. Cory McNicol said Thursday. The rumors seemed to be connected to Election Day.

McNicol said Normal police are investigating any threat as credible, but no incidents were reported involving looting at the Walmart at 300 Greenbriar Drive.

Wednesday night, the pharmacy side doors were blocked by plywood and pallets of wrapped merchandise and similar items were seen next to the entrance to the grocery side.

Similar action was taken in early June after looting in Bloomington-Normal stores followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Complete article

Walmart Turns Four Stores Into Technology Test Centers 10/30/2020

As technology continues to change, retailers have to find innovative ways to test new tech in a realistic environment. Walmart announced today that it plans to turn four stores into technology test centers to help shoppers in physical locations and online.

"We’re moving quickly to use our physical retail stores to not only serve in-store shoppers, but to flex to meet the needs of online shoppers, too, in ways that only Walmart can. That’s where our new test stores come in. Their purpose is to find solutions that help our stores operate as both physical shopping destinations and online fulfillment centers in a way that has yet to be seen across the retail industry," John Crecelius, SVP of Associate Product and Next Generation Stores at Walmart, wrote in a corporate post.

Walmart will use the four stores to try out new technology and digital tools, while making other physical enhancements. Each store will have product and technology teams working along with other staff to test ideas rapidly. Complete article

Amazon Is About to Dethrone Walmart in a Major Way 10/27/2020

Walmart (NYSE:WMT) has been the biggest company in the U.S. by revenue for close to two decades and the biggest company in the world by revenue for much of that time as well.

The retail giant has risen to supremacy by adopting an everyday, low-prices strategy; by carrying a wider range of products than almost any other brick-and-mortar retailer; and by blanketing the country with superstores. It's followed a similar strategy internationally but with mixed results.

Walmart's revenue is set to clock in around $550 billion this year -- tops in the world by a wide margin. But Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is nipping at its heels in one key category. The e-commerce leader is expected to surpass Walmart in U.S. gross merchandise volume (GMV) by next year, according to Evercore ISI, which forecasts Amazon to reach $415 billion GMV next year, ahead of Walmart at $370 billion, though that does not include sales from Sam's Club.
