Walmart is always insane but thank's to the Corona-virus panic it's even more insane than usual and for different reasons. There were several brawls of scarce merchandise as a result of the Coirona-virus, and at least eight hoaxes or people trying to scare others by saying they have the virus, licking merchandise, or coughing on people. There were also a growing number of people wearing face masks and/or gloves as well as at least three people going to Walmart in full hazmat suits, including one of the hoaxes and two other incidents where they casually shopped wearing the suit, one of them taking a video without causing any panic.
There have been several workers across the country infected and spreading fear they might have infected other workers or customers; panic is occasionally spread when people pick up items with their bare hands then return them to the shelves, because they think it might be contaminated and one person took a video of a women going through strawberries with bare hands moving them around to different packages. There have been several occasions in different stores where Walmart claimed they disposed of merchandise near this incidents to be sure.
There was another civil rights complaint when police followed around African American men for wearing surgical masks, which is increasingly common, even though they weren't committing any crime, in another incident there was a white woman wearing a medical mask who they didn't investigate until after the fact when she was caught on camera stealing someone else's purse. Some workers are protesting claiming they're not protecting their workers from the virus, and one worker who is at risk of getting it because she delivers to lots of different customers fears eviction because everyone else in her family has lost their job as a result of the pandemic.
Trump surrounded himself with CEOs who he's trying to give credit for solving the problem but it's the workers that are addressing it, and many of these CEOs are the ones responsible for lack of health care for many Americans. As I pointed out in a previous article countries with single payer health care, universal coverage, or state run health care, on average have much lower death rates then the United States, and numerous other sources cited in that article came to the same conclusion through different means.
Whether it's related to the pandemic or not there may be one silver lining to this with an unusually low number of shootings last month with only seven or eight shootings, including one that was thought to be at the store, but turned out to be at a nearby church, but two kids running from it went to Walmart causing them to lock it down until it was investigated. The other seven shootings all took place at Walmart with at least five injuries, but no fatalities as a result of shootings last month. This is only the third time in the past seventeen months where there were fewer than ten shootings in a month, with one month with only four shootings, but the number of shootings climbed right back up the following month.
There were only four deaths reported, that I know of last month which is also exceptionally low, with one of them found in a port-a-potty that was covered with blood, although the police didn't say how he died, indicating that this could have been a stabbing or shooting. One of these deaths was a two year old child killed in a car accident. (A previous version of this article said there were only three deaths but one more turned up in a search the day after it was posted and it was updated.)
There were also at least nine other gun related crimes, including robberies, a stolen gun, a couple panics and someone that fired a flare gun during an argument. There was an attack with a bat that led police to charge the suspect with attempted murder, an attack on a worker and a strong arm robbery.
Police released a video of a car thief leaving a baby that was in it at the Walmart and there were two other viral videos of people getting in arguments, one a person that was upset because people objected when he swore at his own child and another a motorcyclist that allegedly threatened someone driving off, but he claims that he only chased them because someone jumped on the hood and he wanted to stop him from falling off and getting killed, the police didn't charge him with anything, but a lot of people came to the wrong conclusions, according to him.
Somehow someone allegedly accidentally left a military artillery round at an Arkansas Walmart; how do you do that? Why would anyone even have an artillery round in the first place?
Another women threw a Molotov cocktail at Walmart after getting caught shoplifting items that included a bow with arrows.
Another woman was outraged that someone would scam her by hacking her gift card, but the article didn't seem to indicate that she was angry at Walmart for not securing it in the first place, since this isn't even close to an isolated incident, this has happened many times before and Walmart hasn't change their practices to stop it.
Once again Walmart is using tax payer money to charge a barefoot person for stealing shoes, with a rigged economy suppressing wages so the corporate executives can make a fortune while leaving a large number of people destitute this has become routine. The shoes would only cost about twenty dollars but the court costs will probably be at least ten to twenty times that which is typical for many of the petty crimes they report, most of which don't get reported in the media.
Accidents are lower than usual as well, although there were at least eight or nine major crashes, chases, carjackings or other incidents, including one incident where a woman ran down two people in different parts of the parking lot before leaving the scene, and the child that was killed in another incident, in addition to many more fender benders that almost never get reported.
Walmart had a decline in fires as well with only about five with at least two of them being arson. They had at least four knife attacks or threats, including one that was allegedly an attempted murder and another attempted stabbing of a police officer. All these incidents are lower than they've been for the past two or three years, whether it's related to the Corona-virus or not; but they're higher than the average number of incidents they had about five or six years ago; and there's also a possibility that reporting on the pandemic has buried other stories which weren't included.
In the past day or two Google searches have reported mostly old stories, for some reason, implying that they might be incomplete, for some reason; if that's the case then the decline in incidents may be just a decline in reporting them on the internet.
There have also been numerous other assaults, fights, purse snatching lock-downs, domestic altercations, robberies, and other scams, all lower than usual, assuming that they're being reported on search engines, but at levels that they had about four to five years ago.
Reports of Walmart business actions are also down, but they were let off the hook for the opioid crisis, when many prosecutors across the country wanted to charge them, but Trump political appointees killed the charges, much to the outrage of many. Walmart simply isn't accountable to the same laws as the rest of us. They're being pressured to ditch cashiers for some reason or another, even though a lot of customers are unhappy with it and so are the workers losing their jobs and self-checkout and other automated practices is a major contributing cause for their high crime problem; any money they save by cutting on cashiers is being lost dealing with the crime. However, a large portion of that is being paid by the courts and police so the tax payers are footing the bill, subsidizing higher profits for the corporation and higher crime for communities.
Walmart is also increasing their participation in the health care system with increasing number of testing at their stores and doctors opening clinics, which should concern everyone, since their epidemic problems with bureaucracy and corner cutting is guaranteed to cause problems.
Before the pandemic escalated in the middle of the month, there was another staged bomb hoax where they put a knapsack with a sign saying "bomb in here" for a social media prank. Another video was released of a woman that allegedly made a bomb from items she found on Walmart shelves in January. After seeing all the failed bomb hoaxes at Walmart and elsewhere, I find it extremely hard to believe she could have made as much of a bomb as the police are leading us to believe. If bombs were that easy to make people would be setting them off at Walmart all the time, just like they go on shootings sprees every month.
Police also caught a Texas City Council member stealing at the self-checkout aisle. There must be an enormous number of these incidents that are less newsworthy happening where tax payer money is being used to subsidize their pettey crimes so executives can slightly increase profits by cutting employee services at the expense of us all; but this shows that the one place where politicians can't get away with stealing is at Walmart, the same goes for police officers who are also often caught at the self-checkout lane not scanning items. I don't know how many of these incidents there are but Walmart almost certainly does, yet their records are almost certainly proprietary or secret, even though those records may show epidemic levels of incidents which indicate that self-check out is costing far more than it's saving, but since the tax payer foots the bill by prosecuting all these cases Walmart continues to push more automation, cutting workers jobs and increasing crime and safety problems.
An Idaho store is being infested with a crow invasion that's been happening for years now and they want to cut down trees which is virtually guaranteed to make it worse; as Rodney King might say, "Why can't we just get along with crows?"
What is up with toilet paper? Is there something about it that makes women, or perhaps just one woman, give birth in the toilet paper aisle while every ones panicking and hoarding a trivial commodity which they can produce even in a pandemic assuming they actually wanted to?
Do we need Power Rangers to hand it out when the oligarchs have become so incompetent that they can't stock this basic commodity?
Strange things happen at Walmart!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in March 2020. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

Kidnapping Suspect Arrested at Missouri Walmart 03/03/2020
Mount Vernon police captured a man wanted for a kidnapping in Marshfield after the suspect tried to buy items at Walmart.
Christopher Ford was arrested Monday in Mount Vernon after spending the weekend on the run from law enforcement. Police in Marshfield say that Ford abducted a woman Friday morning, pepper-sprayed her, and locked her in a car. The woman was able to escape in Springfield according to witnesses.
Ford was spotted Sunday in Sarcoxie, but was able to escape after a high-speed chase through Lawrence County where speeds reached 90 to 100 miles per hour. Ford’s vehicle was disabled by countermeasures used by police, and he crashed into a field, but was able to escape into the woods and elude a K9 and thermal imaging equipment.
Monday morning, he was spotted at the Walmart looking disheveled.
Employee Karen Meyers, who recognized Ford, told OI about her contact with him.
“I asked him how he was doing and he said ok, but his clothes were wet,” Meyers said. “It wasn’t raining so I immediately thought he might be the person who may have been hiding outdoors all night. A closer look at his face and I was sure it was him.” Complete article

Welcome to Walmart. Your doctor will see you now 03/03/2020
In Calhoun, Georgia, a city of around 16,000 residents 70 miles outside of Atlanta, Walmart is testing out a new health center. If successful, Walmart may expand its initiative across the United States, potentially upending the way millions of Americans receive medical care.
At “Walmart Health,” which has a separate entrance next door to a massive Walmart supercenter, patients can see doctors for routine checkups and ongoing treatment of chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease, even if they lack health insurance. They can also get lab work, x-rays, dental care, behavioral health counseling, eye and hearing exams, and access other services. The bill for an annual checkup for an adult is $30 without insurance, an eye exam is $45 and dental exams cost $25. Therapy sessions are $60.

Months After SC Police Killed Man Outside of Walmart, Family’s Lawsuit Moved to Federal Court 03/03/2020
Three months after a black man described as a loving father and former athlete was killed by a Chester, South Carolina Police officer in a Walmart parking lot, his family’s lawsuit has been moved to federal court.
The family of Ariane McCree, 28, filed a lawsuit last month against the Chester Police Department, City of Chester, Walmart, and three unnamed officers. On Feb. 27, case was moved from state court in Chester County to federal court because the lawsuit alleges McCree’s constitutional rights were violated, according to court documents.
McCree was killed by police after he was detained for allegedly shoplifting at Walmart on Nov. 23. Chester Police officials have said that McCree assaulted an officer before he was shot and killed, but the lawsuit tells a different story.
Police also said he was armed at the time he was shot, according to the Chester News and Reporter. However, the lawsuit said he was still handcuffed at the time he was shot.
So many questions surrounding this case asking what exactly happened in the last few moments of McCree’s life could likely be answered by surveillance video that hasn’t yet been released to the public or to the family.
Almost a month after McCree’s attorney subpoenaed Walmart for the video footage from Nov. 23, Walmart attorneys filed a motion asking the court to limit the timeframe of the video to only the hours McCree and law enforcement officials were on scene. They also requested that the court order the video footage to be confidential and only limited to those involved in the litigation. They also asked to schedule a hearing about the video release. Fla. Walmart shopper thinks her Mercedes was vandalized over an anti-Trump bumper magnet 03/04/2020
A Florida woman who says her car was vandalized over an anti-Trump bumper sticker is also disagreeing with her local police department’s summary of events.
Kimberly Underwood-Solarte claims her Mercedes-Benz was vandalized in a Walmart parking lot Sunday afternoon because of a bumper magnet questioning President Trump’s mental state, according to the Smoking Gun.
The 59-year-old motorist said she has several magnets she alternately puts on her vehicle. They include the slogans "There’s a psychopath in the White House,” “There’s a dangerous thin-skinned narcissist in the White House,” and “Blue Wave.”
When Underwood-Solarte called Manatee County cops in west central Florida to report a roughly 8-inch scratch to her car, an officer filled out an incident report claiming the victim believed the damage was inflicted because she had an “I hate TRUMP” sticker on her car. Complete article

'It makes me angry that somebody is out there doing that': Woman says she was ripped off after buying a gift card from Walmart 03/03/2020
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — A Fernandina Beach grandmother said she bought a gift card at Walmart and ended up getting scammed by a criminal.
"It makes me angry that somebody is out there doing that," Jeanne Robinson said.
Robinson recently bought the gift card and mailed it to her grandson for his birthday. There was just one problem. The information on the card had been compromised. By the time it arrived in Illinois, the money had already been spent by someone else.
"I said that can't be right, you know there's $60 on that card ... that can't be right," Robinson said.
She was told by an employee that the card was used a thousand miles away at a store in Texas.
"The only way that I think that could've happened is if the card information was actually stolen before I ever even purchased the card," Robinson said.
Crime and safety expert Mark Baughman said the criminal act is a common fraud. All it takes is lifting up the tape concealing the code and writing that code down.

Does Walmart Need to Ditch Cashiers to Stay Relevant? 03/04/2020
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) wants to be your friend. And Walmart's, and Kroger's, and Target's, too. Despite disrupting retail and capturing the No. 1 spot in the industry, the tech giant wants to help rivals up their game -- for a licensing fee, of course.
Is this the future of grocery shopping? And do any supermarkets that want to stay relevant need to bow to Amazon?
What Amazon stands to gain
Convenience is one of the top factors for customers choosing a shopping destination. Standing in line is one of the most inconvenient parts of shopping, which is one reason many have turned to shopping online. But that doesn't work when you need to get things right now, and it also hasn't helped Amazon take over grocery. The best way to combine immediate fulfillment with convenience -- and for Amazon to gain a new edge in the market -- is cashierless checkout.
Amazon has already opened up roughly two dozen cashierless Go stores, but last week it unrolled its most ambitious Go concept yet, a 10,400-square-foot grocery store in Seattle. After tweaking the platform since its inception three years ago, it can now manage a much larger space and many more products. The technology combines customers registering and entering with an app, and then lots of cameras and sensors throughout the store that monitor what the customer purchases. Complete article

Man seen in viral video taken outside Spokane Valley Wash. Walmart says it was a misunderstanding 03/05/2020
SPOKANE, Wash. - A man who appeared in a viral video of a father and his children facing an angry group of people near the Spokane Valley Walmart is sharing his side of the story.
Lawton Miller said he was leaving the Walmart on Sprague on Friday afternoon when he heard someone yelling.
"She said, 'he's trying to steal my car!' So I got out, walked over there and opened the door," Miller said. "I said 'hey, this lady said you're stealing her car.'"
The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said the woman believed the driver had stolen her car, but it wasn't true.
The driver, Lee Allen, slammed the door on Miller's arm when he tried to open it. Allen told KHQ that he wasn't stealing the car and was terrified for himself and his two children in the car with him.
"I knew I was going to keep my kids protected no matter what," Allen said. "If all else fails, I could just step on that gas pedal and shoot out like a rocket somewhere, but at the same time I didn't want to hurt anybody."
Miller said he was planning to back off and let Allen leave until the situation changed again.
"This kid jumps on the car. What do I do now? I've got to get this kid off the car," Miller said. "I don't know if this guy knows it who's driving this car, (but) if this kid falls off and he runs over and kills that kid, he's going to prison for murder. He's no good to his family anymore."
Miller said that's why he decided to start chasing the car on his motorcycle. He said he blared his horn, flashed his lights and pulled up alongside Allen to try and stop him so the man on the hood could get off. Miller said he didn't set out to scare Allen or his family, and said he has children and grandchildren himself. Complete article

Grand jury indicts former Tx. Walmart worker | Baxter, 62, allegedly made a number of threatening statements to co-workers 03/08/2020
TEXARKANA, Texas —A man whose former co-workers at a local Walmart were made uneasy by statements he allegedly made about mass shootings has been indicted for terroristic threatening by a Bowie County grand jury.
Kenneth Scott Baxter, 62, was brought to the attention of the New Boston, Texas, Police Department by Walmart security personnel July 1, according to a probable cause affidavit. Two of Baxter's co-workers at the Walmart in New Boston, where Baxter worked approximately 20 years, allegedly reported three alarming statements made by Baxter in June 2019.
Baxter allegedly told a co-worker June 18 that he felt store management was "out to get him" and that the company's active shooter training was "because of employees like him and that he knew he could get away with it too because he has been diagnosed with severe depression," the affidavit states.
Baxter allegedly made a comment to a different co-worker June 29 about active shooter training.
"You know those active shooter videos? They're warning you about me," Baxter allegedly said.
The following day, June 30, Baxter allegedly made another troubling statement after complaining that management had been "riding" him.
"When I leave this place I'm taking some people with me," Baxter allegedly said.
The affidavit notes that Baxter allegedly made threats of suicide when a Hooks, Texas, police officer attempted to pull him over Nov. 2, 2018. Baxter's former wife allegedly told the Hooks officer that Baxter put a 9 mm handgun in his mouth but put it down and pulled over after she told him she loved him and promised not to leave him. Waltons Transfer $48 Billion of Walmart Shares to Family Trust 03/09/2020
The world’s wealthiest family moved $48 billion of Walmart Inc. stock to a different holding company in an action that may signal future share sales and bolster their philanthropy.
Walton Enterprises LLC, the main investment entity of the retailer's founding clan, transferred about 15% of Walmart's outstanding shares to the Walton Family Holdings Trust, according to regulatory filings last week.
The shift of 415 million shares represented about 29% of the shares held by Walton Enterprise. This entity now owns about 1 billion shares.
The family owns about half of the retailer’s outstanding shares and last week’s transaction doesn’t change their overall stake. But if previous selling patterns by the trust are any guide, disposals may occur. The trust has sold 98% of the 194 million shares that were distributed to it in April 2015.
A statement from that time said that the Waltons expected to sell the shares to help fund charitable contributions and offset increases in its ownership percentage as a result of the company's stock buyback programs. Complete article

Woke Walmart Introduces Pronoun Buttons For Workers 03/09/2020 Are you kidding me? Who's going to believe Walmart is "woke" just because they turned this word into a marketing phrase?
Have you ever been in that situation where you really want to know what someone’s pronouns are, but you feel awkward about asking? Probably not. I mean, very few people outside the fashion and entertainment industries ever have, but that hasn’t stopped Walmart from solving the problem. The retailer has introduced buttons for workers that proudly display their pronouns.
The buttons, which are available for Walmart employees to purchase, are the wokest of flair for people who aren’t satisfied just doing the bare minimum. Four buttons have come out so far: one that says “He/Him/His,” one that says “She/Her/Hers,” one that says “They/Them/Theirs,” and one that says “Ask me my pronouns.”
So, a couple things on this right off the bat. Do we really need all three pronouns listed? Does anyone identify as He/She/Theirs? And if so, doesn’t Walmart need more buttons? What about this “Ask me my pronouns” button? I mean, if I’m in the mood to buy some graphic T-shirts and cheap beef jerky, do I really want to interrogate the nice old man (sorry, I shouldn’t assume) by the door about his gender identifiers? I don’t want to do that.
This is corporate pandering at its saddest and most desperate. Walmart often finds itself in the crosshairs of progressives like Bernie Sanders. They love to talk about the billions the owners are worth and how some of Walmart’s employees are on public assistance. Does Walmart really think it can win over these naysayers with trans-glorifying buttons it sells to its employees? Complete article

Walmart, Target CEOs Unite Behind Trump as President Declares a National State of Emergency 03/13/2020
President Donald Trump today declared a national state of emergency — a measure aimed at unleashing “the full power of the federal government” by tapping its ability to offer up to $50 billion in aid to state and local municipalities.
Backed by several retail and pharmaceutical company chiefs, including Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Target executive chief Brian Cornell, the president’s address this afternoon saw the U.S. leader take a marked shift from his earlier posturing on coronavirus, outlining a more serious, detailed response to the virus that’s now a pandemic.
McMillon was the first retail leader to take the podium after Trump. Walmart’s top executive said that the retailer’s parking lots will reserve space for coronavirus testing and that the company will aid in other coronavirus preventative measures as needed.
“We’re keeping our stores open to serve the American consumer who’s rapidly stocking up on household essentials,” said Target’s CEO, adding that normally his firm competes with Walmart but now they are united against a sole competitor in the coronavirus. Complete article

Cops: Hempfield man jailed after ‘domestic’ altercation inside Pa. Walmart 03/23/2020
A 37-year-old man who allegedly brawled with his girlfriend Saturday inside a Walmart in Hempfield and later scuffled with state troopers outside after refusing to surrender was jailed on criminal charges.
Anthony J. Villa was charged by state police with multiple counts of harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after the 10:21 a.m. Saturday incident at the Greengate Centre store.
Trooper Ryan Ilich said multiple witnesses said the altercation began shortly after the pair walked into the store and Villa began grabbing the woman’s backpack and demanding she give him the keys to the SUV. Court records indicate customers and store employees came to assist the woman as she began “screaming for help.”

Target and Walmart aren’t protecting staff amid pandemic, workers say 03/22/2020
Management at retail giants Walmart and Target are not doing enough to protect staff working through the coronavirus crisis, according to some workers.
As school districts, restaurants and several businesses have closed around the US due to the coronavirus outbreak, large corporate retail stores like Target and Walmart have remained open, but with reduced operating hours. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended all gatherings of 50 or more people be cancelled to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, but grocery and retail stores have drawn crowds of shoppers.
In interviews with the Guardian, several workers at Target and Walmart expressed concerns.
Workers said they were anxious about working in crowded environments, with increased workloads, understaffing, inadequate sanitation protections and lack of increased compensation or paid time off for workers now on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m 64 years old and according to the CDC, I should be staying home and practicing social distancing and in quarantine,” said a Walmart customer service manager in the midwest who requested to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. “I can’t do that as I can’t afford to take off work unpaid. It would sure be great to have a one-stop-shop where you could, in a perfect world, buy all of your day-to-day basic needs. But no store is perfect—whether because of prices, quality, or simply what a store offers or doesn’t offer, you’re instead best off buying some things from one place and others from another. This is certainly part of the reason online retailers like Amazon are so successful.
One store where you can buy pretty much anything is Walmart. And while there are plenty of things you haven’t been buying at Walmart but should be, there are other items for which you may want to look elsewhere. Complete article

Walmart Was Almost Charged Criminally Over Opioids. Trump Appointees Killed the Indictment. 03/2/2020
Even as company pharmacists protested, Walmart kept filling suspicious prescriptions, stoking the country’s opioid epidemic. A Republican U.S. Attorney in Texas thought the evidence was damning.
Trump’s political appointees? Not so much.
On a Tuesday just before Halloween in 2018, a group of federal prosecutors and agents from Texas arrived in Washington. For almost two years, they’d been investigating the opioid dispensing practices of Walmart, the largest company in the world. They had amassed what they viewed as highly damning evidence only to face a major obstacle: top Trump appointees at the Department of Justice.
The prosecution team had come to Washington to try to save its case. Joe Brown, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, led the group, which included Heather Rattan, an over-20-year veteran of the office who had spent much of her career prosecuting members of drug cartels.
They first went to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s headquarters to meet the acting administrator, Uttam Dhillon. There Rattan laid out the evidence. Opioids dispensed by Walmart pharmacies in Texas had killed customers who had overdosed. The pharmacists who dispensed those opioids had told the company they didn’t want to fill the prescriptions because they were coming from doctors who were running pill mills. They pleaded for help and guidance from Walmart’s corporate office.
Investigators had obtained records of similar cries for help from Walmart pharmacists all over the country: from Maine, North Carolina, Kansas and Washington, and other states. They reported hundreds of thousands of suspicious or inappropriate opioid prescriptions. One Walmart employee warned about a Florida doctor who had a “list of patients from Kentucky that have been visiting pharmacies in all of central Wisconsin recently.” That doctor had sent patients to Walmarts in more than 30 other states. Video: Cop Follows Two Black Men Around Illinois Walmart for Allegedly Wearing Surgical Masks, Asks Them for ID 03/27/2020
Two Black men claim they were kicked out of an Illinois Walmart after they entered the store wearing surgical masks.
A video posted on YouTube, Jermon Best and his friend Diangelo Jackson walked through a Wood River, Illinois, Walmart as a white police officer trailed them.
“He just followed us from outside [and] told us we can’t wear masks,” Best said in the footage. He also accused the officer of telling them they cannot film the encounter even though the officer is reportedly wearing a body camera.
“We’re being asked to leave for being safe,” Best continued. He expressed concerns about the coronavirus and made sure other customers knew what was happening. The cop didn’t stop following the men until another customer approached him while Best and Jackson kept walking.
The video was uploaded to YouTube on March 18 and has garnered over 47,000 views. Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells told The Telegraph the incident happened before it was common for people to walk around in masks. He told the outlet the unidentified officer “was mistaken when it came to the store’s policy prohibiting masks.” Wells insisted the video wasn’t an accurate representation of the confrontation. Here's How Walmart Is Using Artificial Intelligence to Keep Prices Low 03/27/2020
Major retailers have a lot of power over vendors. A chain like Walmart (NYSE:WMT) can, for example, go to a medium-sized vendor and ask it to cut prices by 2% or lose some of its shelf space.
That's typical and it helps keeps prices low for consumers. It's also challenging to keep track of for a company operating on the scale Walmart does. To help with that, the retail giant has reached a deal to pilot technology from Pactum to help it negotiate contracts with some of its vendors.
What is Walmart doing?
Essentially, Walmart is acknowledging that it's tough, if not impossible, to negotiate the best possible terms with its hundreds of thousands of vendors. That's a problem it will use Pactum's artificial intelligence-based product to address.
"Inefficient contracting has been estimated to cause firms to lose between 17% to 40% of the value on a given deal, depending on circumstances, according to research by KPMG," Pactum CEO Martin Rand said in a press release. Complete article

Low-wage earners helping to keep the nation’s top retailers operating during the COVID-19 crisis are balking at the Trump administration’s bid to return to business as usual by Easter.
Frontline retail workers at Amazon and Walmart forced to work without the benefit of face masks, gloves or hand sanitizer are already afraid they are being exposed to COVID-19. They are calling on corporate CEOs to temporarily shutter their workplaces for thorough disinfection.

“I do understand the need for workers to be in the store in order for people who need medicine; for people who need supplies who have children — but there’s got be something done to help protect us,” 19-year Walmart worker Cyndi Murray told me this week.
“Maybe at a point, shut down — sanitize the registers,” the Hyattsville, Maryland resident added. “Do they realize how many people come into these little self-checkouts? We have 10 registers inside one of our self-checkouts. Do you know how close people are to each other?” Complete article

“Those steps include delivering updated procedures to associates through videos and photos, as well as schedules for cleaning to help provide clear guidance. We have a voice-activated app called 'Ask Sam' that associates can use to ask for cleaning guides for any area of the store, and our stores have adjusted operating hours to 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. to help associates restock shelves while continuing to clean and sanitize the building.” Complete article
