Walmart Crime Report January 2020

Walmart had at least another fifteen shootings in January, with at least three fatal ones, and at least three or four more deaths related to their business, continuing last years record breaking trend for another month. One of the people shot to death was an employee killed by a mentally ill person, another was killed by an ex-boyfriend in a domestic incident, her boyfriend was found dead later at a separate location, cause of his death hasn't been released; & the third was one of two officer involved shootings where he killed a robbery suspect. The other officer involved shooting wasn't fatal. One of the other three deaths was a shoplifting accomplice that was run over by her husband; the second was a man dying in a camper fire; and the third hasn't been disclosed; however it was in an area on their property where homeless people often stay & they turn up dead on a regular basis for natural causes of other problems with little or no attention being drawn to them or efforts to solve the problem.

There were also two stories about shootings that happened last month; one was a follow up on the last shooting of the month to report that the critically wounded victim had dies, bring the record of deaths up to 134, with 9 of those in December, up from 133. The other was a shooting that wasn't reported on the internet for two and a half weeks after it happened for one reason or another, bringing the record for shootings up to 152, with 13 of those in December, up from 151; both records were already about 25% higher than previous records. This shooting involved several gun shots wounding a victim, so you would think it would have attracted a lot of attention earlier; however, for one reason or another this seems to be more common than it used to be. I have no way of knowing for certain but there have been some efforts to minimize reporting of their high crime problem in the past and I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that this could be part of reason for growing number of delayed reports, or perhaps more that are going unnoticed.

They had more than a dozen additional gun related crimes, mostly involving thefts of some sort, with some robbing customers or endangering employees, and at least one false alarm. There are also at least a couple stories where people managed to steal thousands or in one case $1.3 million dollars from Walmarts. It's hard to imagine how they could allow so much to be stolen but their huge incompetent bureaucracy is a major part of the problem.

At least three police departments or editorials have spoken out about their own local crime problems which are worse at Walmart than other locations; this now happens almost every month but they're only reported at the local level. The editorial was in Lebanon NH which is a very low crime area and compared to many other Walmarts they don't have nearly as many problems; however, it's still much worse than what little crime they have in that area. Walmart is constantly try to solve this problem with increased surveillance instead of thinking about how their policies or other social problems caused it in the first place.

There's little or no doubt that a major part of their problem increased with self-check outs, yet instead of hiring more employees to prevent this problem they escalate automation, canceling the worst because of crime. When they do hire more employees it's to catch people, not to prevent it, which should be considered entrapment. Store design and union busting are also contributing factors which they decline to consider. Some of their robberies are from former employees, including at least one last month, and many more shoplifting's are as well, often prosecuting extremely petty thefts by workers that are frustrated by suppressed wages and an oppressive work environment. Shoplifting is one reason why they've cut hours in some stores across the country this month.

Of course, Walmart policies aren't responsible for all their crime problems; however our social economic system is another contributing cause, and wealthy campaign donors including the Walton's are impacting that indirectly. As mentioned below Stacy Mitchell has reported on how Walmart has benefited from many government subsidies as a result of favorable policies that enable them to wipe out competition, often with less crime problems. They also lobby for suppressing social programs that reduce problems like crime; so instead of addressing social problems with programs that work government is subsidizing corporations that donate to campaigns.

There problems include a massive number of bomb threats, so many that most people don't pay much attention to them, since they're almost always bluffs, but they still create a big scare. Many of these stories show that customers or worker are often outraged by them because they don't take care of legitimate concerns, and making an empty threat is an easy way to strike out. You might think that they would address legitimate concerns for the sake of those that don't go to extremes even if not for for those that don't but all they care about is profit.

Last month they had one woman who allegedly made a bomb on the premises with ingredients she picked up while walking though the store without paying for them. the sheriff said “Had it not been for an alert off-duty law enforcement officer and a watchful security staff at Walmart, she may have followed through with her plans to cause an explosion inside the store,” which I'm highly skeptical of, although she might have had flammable materials that could have caused a fire. the vast majority of these threats are of course empty & on the rare occasions, the one that do have an actual devise suspected to be a bomb they rarely work. Sometimes when in doubt that blow them up in a controlled area to prevent damage to be safe, but they're almost always incompetent. The clear implication is that making homemade bombs isn't nearly as easy as the media or police seem to imply although I can't imagine why they would try to increase panic over this. If it was easier it's virtually guaranteed that there would be many more real bombs like there are shootings or fires and all kinds of other strange disruptions.

There own employees were caught stealing extra money intended to pay off Christmas layaway's as a result from a donation from Bears linebacker Khalil Mack, which was reported last month; a police officer was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing from Walmart although they're rarely ever charged when abusing or even killing citizens; they had several brawls, and a helicopter presence at one store for a "misdemeanor theft."

Spending thousands of dollars for minor shoplifting is an interesting way to spend tax payer money but Walmart doesn't foot the bill & continues to get enormous tax breaks so they're happy with this.

In addition to the women run over by her husband while shoplifting and the man dying in a camper fire, there were well over a dozen major crashes, DWIs, chases, hit and runs, carjackings, or other automobile crimes. this includes several major injuries and an eight year old that took his father's keys and drove the care into a woman & a baby, several stolen vehicles and a police officer that was dragged trying to stop someone which happens every month or two sometimes more often.

In addition to the camper fire they had at least nine more fires, at least three of these were arson, one that was actually several fires at the same store, most of the others are under investigation, but at least two of them appear to be accidental or electrical. In one of the fires under investigation "employees were not permitted to comment" which is common practice at Walmart when management takes the initiative to tell them to remain silent; the most credible explanation often come from employees that don't have an incentive to spin it to allay fears.

There were at least eight different knife crimes, including several robberies, at least three of these incidents resulted in stabbings. One of the incidents without a stabbing involved a man yelling comments about the "KKK" and threatening pemployees, another involved someone that was drinking beer in the bathroom and pulled out a sheathed knife when approached but never unsheathed it.

There were also several more robberies, fights, thefts of entire cartloads of merchandise, which is routine, another theft of a donation box, a false claim of kidnapping, and perhaps a real one, and possible real stalking incident, several assaults on police officers, scanning of credit card numbers and using it while she was still in the store, a rape accusation after following someone home, more false alarms, and many more minor crimes that aren't likely to be reported widely.

A man found class in hamburger meat at Walmart; another family found a rodent in produce at another store; and there was another warning about dressers that may fall over if children try to climb them after a child died recently this way. These stories are practically never widely reported, and they're repeated over an over again although there are different kinds of things found in their food or other merchandise each time. They've known for decades that children are at risk for injury as a result of cheap dressers; yet every time they get a warning or recall they just do the same thing with another cheap dresser and repeat the process, possibly while fighting government regulation to prevent this or minimizing media coverage to keep most people from realizing it.

A portion of money spent at Walmart always goes to their legal bills since they're always involved in a large number of lawsuits. This month there are reports about lawsuits about an exploding bike tire, discrimination, including one case against a naval reservist they refused to hire while simultaneously promoting pro veteran propaganda but coverage of this is minimized while propaganda is repeated widely, a whistle-blower lawsuit was tossed in favor of Walmart and California truck drivers had a victory at an appeals court although Walmart has a history of multiple appeals, and they're already asking the court to reconsider which is something no one without political power would have a chance of winning.

In Louisiana the State Supreme Court ruled they're not liable for third party sales tax and in India they're facing tougher scrutiny for anti-competitive practices than they are in the United States. Our government is hardly doing a good job defending the free market, instead enabling an oligarchy market controlled by a small number of Wall Street firm that can rig the entire economy. They also lost a two million dollar verdict for a man that was struck by merchandise, but if past is prologue they won't have to pay that much either. They're one of the few people or organizations to win against BP for their losses as a result of the big oil spill ten years ago; courts are only fair to those with lots of money and political connections.

And it's likely to get even worse as consolidation of corporations continues with them starting their own meatpacking plant and buying up several more businesses, including some involved in the health care industry which should concern everyone. They're also making major leadership changes in the USA and India, executives often move from one large corporation to another as part of a revolving door but these opportunities aren't available to the vast majority of us and there's little doubt that they all sign non-disclosure agreements which is essentially an agreement to conspire to hide unethical business practices from the public, including how they create propaganda to make it look otherwise.

There advertisers are demanding more transparency but there's little or no chance that they'll pas that on to consumers or workers if they get their request since advertising is as secretive and fraudulent as Walmart and other Wall Street corporations. this includes selling consumer information to increase efectiveness of fraudulent ads, but the public isn't allowed to understand how this works.

They also have several projects to increase automation while trying to create propaganda to convince us this won't reduce jobs, which is clearly not the case at all; if they do increase some jobs it's security jobs to catch the increased number of thieves as a result of their automation.

they got caught making an incredibly crude joke about Paul Walker's death, who died in a car crash in 2013.

Walmart has plenty of odd crimes as usual, including a person that has been drilling holes in gas tanks at one store, which has also happened at other location in the same area of Kentucky; and someone intentionally let bedbugs loose in a Pennsylvania store, which isn't the first time something like this has happened a previous incident involved letting mice loose in a meat cooler and many other strange things.

A high tech thief used hover shoes to glide out the door with a cart full or merchandise which was of course caught on camara and it's a matter of time before they catch him with such a unique tactics.

Another woman urinated in the store and used clothes she didn't pay for and left behind to clean it up.

And a couple teenagers put some graffiti on the floor that only caused $25 worth of damage, in two incidents five hours apart, yet it was quite large and obvious so it's hard to imagine how they could have gone unnoticed long enough to complete it.

Strange things happen at Walmart!

In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. Making Change at Walmart is asking If you or someone you know has gone through @Walmart's "Restorative Justice" program for first-time suspected shoplifters, send us a DM. 03/30/2017 to ensure that it isn’t doing more harm than good. I did my own review of this program as well at Walmart’s “Restorative Justice” Endangers Public Without Reducing Crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in January 2020. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Police video now shows a wild night in a northwest Albuquerque Walmart parking lot. In November, employees on their break kept a suspected drunk driver from taking off after the young woman played bumper cars in the parking lot.

A 21-year-old driver and her friend appear drunk to everyone but themselves. The Walmart employees say the driver was backing up into the same car again and again. They kept her there until the police arrived.

The passenger eventually agreed to step out of the car while asking the officer to light a cigarette. However, in the driver’s seat, Angelina Martin refused to get out of the car.

Woman files lawsuit against NY Walmart 01/02/2020

JOHNSTOWN — A local woman who fell on ice and injured herself outside a Warren County Walmart three years ago has filed a lawsuit against the retailer and the firms that maintain its property.

Amanda Ovitt of 35 Parkwood Ave. — represented by attorney Heidi Gifford of Gloversville — filed a civil complaint Dec. 12 in state Supreme Court in Johnstown.

No specific monetary damages are being sought in the suit because costs would exceed limits of the lower courts.

The lawsuit was filed against defendants Walmart Inc.; Brightview Landscapes LLC; Brightview Landscape Services Inc.; and NIMS Outdoor Services Inc. of Fort

Court papers indicate that on Dec. 18, 2016 Ovitt was a customer walking outside the Walmart store on Route 9 in Queensbury. Behind Walmart’s push to eliminate 1 gigaton of greenhouse gases by 2030 12/15/2019

As the climate crisis facing the planet becomes more immediate — fueled by powerful images that include devastating floods in Venice and uncontrollable wildfires in the Amazon — companies are waking up to the role they play in climate change and announcing plans for ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

But one company was very much ahead of the curve. Walmart has been focused on sustainability since 2005. Following Hurricane Katrina and the devastation left in its wake, then-CEO Lee Scott announced a change in the company’s mindset, which included focusing on ways the retailer could become more environmentally friendly.

These goals have continued under Walmart’s fifth and current CEO, Doug McMillon. Complete article

Walmart share price outpaces market average, analysts bullish going into 2020 01/01/2020

Walmart was a Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) leader this year with shares rising more than 27% in 2019 despite market volatility around trade concerns. Walmart shares (NYSE: WMT) opened 2019 at $93.34 and closed the year at $118.84 a share for an annual gain of 27.6%, better than the 20% DJIA gain.

Analysts remain bullish on Walmart going into 2020. Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman said Walmart’s performance in 2019 was, “solid” with plenty of upside in 2020. He raised the one-year price target from $125 to $130 and said while retail remains challenging for department stores, Walmart has proven legacy retailers have more running room.

“Walmart’s scale and relative defensiveness look even more compelling in light of increasing competition across categories,” Gutman noted. Complete article

Blue Flashing Lights In WalMart Parking Lot Are Crime Fighters 01/03/2020

DOUGLASVILLE, GA - If you've noticed the flashing lights as you head to your car at WalMart, it's not a blue light special. It's a new way to fight crime.

As part of a nationwide effort to fight and deter crime, the Walmart on Concourse Parkway in Douglasville and another off Thornton Road recently installed Lot Cop, according to the Douglas County Sentinel.

Lot Cop, that looks kind of like a solar panel, is a surveillance system that uses cameras and flashing blue lights. There's one on each side of the stores' parking lot. More than 100 WalMarts across the country have Lot Cops, engineered by Live View Technologies in Utah. Walmart won't share specifics about the technology, explaining that they want to keep criminals from knowing how it works, according to the Sentinel. Complete article

Arkansas Police Officer Catches Parents Shoplifting in Walmart With Kids, Pays for Their Groceries 01/03/2020

An Arkansas police officer has been praised after buying groceries for parents who were caught shoplifting food items from Walmart.

Body-worn camera footage showed FTO Martin purchasing items the couple had been caught with and bringing them back to the mother.

"Ring it all up again so I can pay for it. They're stealing food and they've got kids. I have to take him to jail, but I don't have to make the kids think I'm an a******," the officer could be heard telling cashiers, joking: "Don't let people know I'm a nice guy." Complete article

Chicopee Mass. City Council continues to discuss Walmart public safety issues 01/07/2020

CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The City of Chicopee continuing to take action, hoping to address concerns of issues at the Chicopee's Walmart.

Last year Western Mass News reported how the Chicopee Walmart had more than 2,000 police calls to its location in just 4 years.

While Chicopee police weren’t able to give us a total number tonight from 2019, the city council is hoping to take action to reduce further issues.

According to Ward six Chicopee City Councilor Derek Dobosz, the Walmart on Memorial Drive has been working hard to address public safety issues.

But it comes after reports that Chicopee police had to respond to its location hundreds of times.

"It’s embarrassing and it’s also a public safety issue, people don’t feel safe going to Walmart, you know residents. It’s a strain on tax dollars, you know we’re paying for police officers all the time, so why should we pay for it when that’s Walmart’s issue," Dobosz explained. Complete article

High-speed chase of escaped convict ends in Georgia Walmart parking lot 01/07/2020

Talawrence Vickers was supposed to be in jail for 10 years. An unexpected vacation - and his capture days later - could mean his prison stay gets an extension.

ATLANTA — Georgia Department of Corrections records suggest Talawrence Vickers would have likely ended his sentence for burglary in late 2020.

But his attempt to get out a little early on his own just before New Year's Eve - and the fact that he led police on a high-speed chase to the back of a Walmart parking lot when they found him - will probably mean more time behind bars.

Vickers was arrested on Tuesday just after midnight when authorities suggest he became very reluctant to pull over for deputies on I-75. What began as a traffic stop quickly became a southbound pursuit at mile marker 191. The chase continued for a couple of miles until, according to a statement from deputies, Vickers apparently left the road. But he didn't stop.

Instead, authorities said he continued onto State Route 42 heading toward Forsyth, Georgia and then entered a Walmart parking lot. It's here where the vehicle portion of the chase came to an end as he reached the back of the lot and tried to escape on foot into the woods. Complete article

Walmart files lawsuit against City of Shawano, Wisc. cites over collection of taxes 01/07/2020

SHAWANO, Wis - Walmart has filed a lawsuit against the City of Shawano, claiming the city over collected taxes in 2019.

Court documents show a lawsuit was filed on December 26.

Walmart officials claim the property on E. Green Bay Street in Shawano is worth no more than $5,910,403, and add the city assessed the property at $9,325,800 last year.

Company officials claim the assessment is excessive, and are requesting a refund of the taxes paid in 2019.

According to court documents, if Walmart wins the lawsuit, the city would lose out on more than $30,000 a year in taxes, and would then need to pay back the $32,000 that was over collected in 2019. Complete article

Woman fired from a Sioux Falls SD Walmart after 25 years claims discrimination in lawsuit 01/07/2020

A 25-year employee of Walmart in Sioux Falls has filed suit against the company, alleging it violated federal law when it fired her after refusing to accommodate her disability.

Teresa Miles, who suffers from epilepsy, began working for the Walmart on South Louise Avenue in 1993. During the course of her employment, the lawsuit says, she had numerous contacts with supervisors and had notes from doctors who indicated she should not be forced to work in high-stress, chaotic jobs. Those included working as a cashier or in the electronics department.

For the majority of her career, she worked as an overnight stocker. At times she would be directed to stock in various departments. During the course of her employment, she received “multiple pay raises and satisfactory performance reviews.”

In 2011, the lawsuit says, she suffered a seizure after working in the electronics department. In 2016, Walmart stopped accommodating her disability.

In 2018, after a confrontation with a shopper who tried to leave the store with merchandise without a receipt, she was told that she had to work as a cashier. Miles reminded her manager that her doctor did not want her working as a cashier. She was fired April 4, 2018. Complete article

NH Editorial: Walmart strains police resources 01/08/2020

Walmart’s blue-light special is no bargain for either shoppers or taxpayers. Unlike Kmart’s iconic old promotion, the Walmart blue-light special, which is being rolled out in the Upper Valley and across the country by the end of this month, does not signal special sales for consumers but rather special treatment for law enforcement personnel.

As staff writer Anna Merriman reported in the Sunday Valley News, the chain is setting aside two prime parking spots at the front of its stores for the exclusive use of police officers, whether on or off duty. The spaces are demarcated by a sign reading, “Reserved Parking for our law enforcement partners.” The company says the idea is to strengthen ties with police — although others might characterize it as trying to curry favor.

The need to strengthen ties perhaps results from the fact that in Lebanon and Claremont, as elsewhere, Walmart stores command a disproportionate share of police resources. Police officials around the nation have long complained that Walmart stores tax law enforcement capacity through the sheer volume of calls they generate. While the vast majority of such calls involve petty theft or noncriminal matters, a fair share of violent crime also occurs at Walmart properties, as Bloomberg Businessweek and The New York Times have reported in recent years. The company maintains that it has stepped up its security efforts, but some law enforcement officials remain skeptical.

In 2019, Lebanon police responded to 251 calls from Walmart’s West Lebanon store, which was a typical year, according to Police Chief Richard Mello. He says that more calls originate from Walmart than from any other business in the city. In Claremont, the number of calls for the chain’s store off Washington Street and the immediate surrounding area was 521 last year. Both Mello and Claremont Police Chief Mark Chase say they appreciate the gesture on the part of Walmart to dedicate the parking spaces. Complete article

Ca. Truck drivers score millions from Walmart 01/10/2020

A Fresno, Calif., law firm has scored a major victory with a U.S. Court of Appeals decision upholding a multi-million-dollar verdict for about 700 Walmart truck drivers.

Lawyer Nicolas “Butch” Wagner of Fresno successfully represented the California truck drivers who filed a class-action lawsuit against the mega-retailer nearly a decade ago for short-changing their pay. About 100 of the truck drivers are from the Fresno area.

“We are elated,” said Wagner, of Wagner Jones Kopfman & Artenian. “This has been an eight-year battle and we knew we were on the right side of this. These guys work about 14 hours a day and have dangerous jobs. They work hard and they finally got justice.”

The truck drivers alleged in their lawsuit that Walmart was not paying them for specific parts of their job, including waiting in line to load or unload their cargo, time spent to fill out federally mandated trip slips, inspecting their trucks, and washing and fueling their trucks.

After a 16-day trial in 2016, a federal jury in San Francisco awarded the truck drivers $54 million. The final amount will be higher because the judgment has accrued interest, Wagner said. Complete article

Walmart sacks 56 executives in India as part of restructuring 01/12/2020

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Walmart Inc, the world’s largest retailer, has fired 56 of its executives in India as it restructures in the country. The move underscores the challenges Walmart has faced in expanding its wholesale business in India. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company currently operates 28 wholesale stores in the Asian country where it sells goods to small shopkeepers, and not to retail consumers.

Reuters reported the firings earlier on Monday, citing three people with direct knowledge of the matter, adding the move had mostly affected executives in Walmart’s real estate division, which takes care of store expansion, as the wholesale business model did not bring in expected growth.

Eight of the 56 executives fired were in “senior management” roles and the rest from middle or lower management, Krish Iyer, President and CEO of Walmart India said in a statement. Complete article

Walmart’s new meatpacking plant opens today. What does it mean for the beef industry? 01/10/2020

Walmart, the largest retailer in the U.S., is getting into the beef business. This afternoon, the Arkansas-based company will make a notable move for a purveyor of groceries: opening a 200,000-square-foot meatpacking plant built specifically to process Black Angus beef. The facility, located in Thomasville, Georgia, is the company’s first such plant, according to the Thomasville Times-Enterprise.

In a press release, Walmart said it’s opening the facility to process Angus beef steaks and roasts, which it will sell in 500 stores throughout the Southeast. While the grocer says that controlling its supply chain will meet customers’ demands for transparency, there may be other factors in play as well. This summer, Walmart U.S. Chief Greg Foran told CNN Business that concerns over industry consolidation were one factor that led the company to look into regaining some control over its supply.

In general, when grocers like Walmart sell ground beef or other cuts at the meat counter, they’re selling someone else’s finished product and slapping their brand on it. Currently, Walmart mainly buys its beef from Cargill and Tyson—two of the world’s largest commodity meat companies. According to CNN, Foran has suggested that this dynamic has helped to edge prices upward. “We all know the market dynamics of what happens when you generally operate in a duopoly,” he told analysts in June. “It’s not all that good for the customer.” Complete article

Mom Arrested After Allegedly Making Bomb Inside Fla. Walmart: Deputies 01/14/2020

Deputies say the guard told them Stallard was acting “suspicious” and began to watch her closely while alerting an off-duty state officer in the store A Florida woman found herself behind bars this weekend after police say she was caught making a bomb inside the aisles of a Walmart.

NBC affiliate WFLA-TV reports the incident took place Saturday inside the store outside Tampa, when a security guard saw 37-year-old Emily Stallard roaming the aisles for over an hour with her son.

The two men were able to stop the woman just as she allegedly was about to light the wick of a candle that was built into a jar that had nails and alcohol inside.

“This shows how important it is that if you see something out of place, say something,” Hillsborough Sheriff Spokesperson Amanda Granit told the station. “Your actions and what you saw could really make a huge difference, as it did in this case.”

Stallard was charged with several counts, including arson and child endangerment. She was also charged with resisting arrest after allegedly spitting on an officer while being arrested. It is not clear if she has an attorney. Complete article

Competition Commission of India (CCI), the local antitrust body, highlighted a wide gamut of issues, including the arrangements between smartphone vendors and e-commerce platforms to sell certain handsets exclusively online, and e-commerce firms apparently giving preferential treatment to certain sellers, and said these allegations merit an investigation.

Walmart expands its army of robots to 650 additional stores 01/13/2020

The machines will roam aisles and send alerts to store employees’ handheld devices when items are out of stock.

Walmart Inc.’s robot army is growing.

The world’s largest retailer will add shelf-scanning robots to 650 more U.S. stores by the end of the summer, bringing its fleet to 1,000. The six-foot-tall Bossa Nova devices, equipped with 15 cameras each, roam aisles and send alerts to store employees’ handheld devices when items are out of stock, helping to solve a vexing problem that costs retailers nearly a trillion dollars annually, according to researcher IHL Group.

The new robots, designed by San Francisco-based Bossa Nova Robotics Inc., join the ranks of Walmart’s increasingly automated workforce which also includes devices to scrub floors, unload trucks and gather online-grocery orders. They’re part of Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon’s push to reduce costs, improve store performance and gain credibility as a technology innovator as it battles Amazon.com. Judge Tosses Whistleblower Suit by Ex-Walmart Exec 01/14/2020

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) – A federal judge tossed a case involving a disgruntled Walmart employee who claimed he was fired for revealing a massive fraud by the retail company’s e-commerce division.

U.S. District Court Judge Vince Chhabria handed down summary judgment in favor of Walmart, saying Tri Huynh, a former e-commerce executive for the retail giant, failed to prove he was fired because he was a whistleblower.

“There is little evidence in the record that Huynh raised concerns to Beal about Walmart’s allegedly unlawful activities,” Chhabria wrote in the 6-page order. Beal is the surname of Huynh’s supervisor.

Huynh, who recruited businesses to Walmart’s e-commerce platform, filed suit in March 2018 claiming Walmart committed securities fraud and various other egregious actions of corporate malfeasance and that he was fired when he told his supervisors. The former executive said Walmart was willing to cut corners and engage in illegal practices in its race to catch Amazon in the cutthroat industry of online retail. Complete article

Alabama Walmart shoplifting suspect runs over wife with U-Haul, police say, killing her 01/15/2020

A weekend shoplifting incident at the Blount County Walmart turned deadly when one of the suspects was run over by her husband as they fled lawmen.

Oneonta police were dispatched shortly before 8 p.m. to the store on a report of a shoplifting incident in progress. Chief Charles Clifton said the couple had been loading items into a cart for a lengthy period of time and had been watched on camera.

After gathering about $1,500 worth of goods in their cart, they left the store without paying and headed to a U-Haul they had stationed in the parking lot. Before they could fully load the items into the truck, they spotted police arriving at the scene and took off.

An Alabama Law Enforcement Agency state trooper spotted the truck and tried to stop it on Alabama Highway 75 north of Oneonta, said Senior Trooper Chuck Daniel. Daniel said the trooper was not in pursuit of the vehicle at any point during the incident.

The U-Haul was driven by 32-year-old Jimmy Russell Smith, who lives in the Birmingham area. As he was attempting to pull over on the shoulder, his passenger, which he described to authorities as his wife, tried to exit the slow-moving vehicle, Daniel said.

BP Loses Bid to Avoid Paying $15M to Walmart Over Oil Spill Losses 01/15/2020

Tuesday’s ruling is among the largest payouts BP has challenged, and Walmart is among the most high-profile businesses to make oil spill claims in a class action settlement now valued at more than $10 billion.

Oil giant BP has lost a bid to avoid paying $15 million to Walmart for losses the retailer suffered due to its 2010 oil spill in the Gulf Coast.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed payments to five Walmart stores in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana that made separate claims as part of a 2012 class action settlement aimed at compensating businesses with economic losses tied to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. BP, which unsuccessfully challenged its own settlement in a legal fight that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, has continued to petition the Fifth Circuit to review individual payments to certain businesses in a settlement now estimated to have grown to more than $10 billion.

Tuesday’s ruling is among the largest payouts BP has challenged—although, on Wednesday, the Fifth Circuit affirmed a $27.4 million award to Mueller Copper Tube Company Inc., a copper tube production facility in Fulton, Mississippi, accused of having discrepancies between its financials and tax returns. Walmart also is among the most high-profile businesses to make oil spill claims in a claims process largely sealed from the public. Complete article

Jury finds against Walmart in multi-million-dollar case 01/22/2020

On Thursday, a Cumberland County civil jury took less than an hour to return a $2 million verdict against Walmart for a Gray’s Creek man after he was struck by merchandise at the store in Hope Mills.

According to his attorney, Brent Adams of Dunn, John Cain was injured when 50 pound bags of Ol’Roy Dog Food fell on his neck and back. Among the injuries suffered by Cain as a result of the fall were back sprain, an exacerbation of his pre-existing regenerative disk disease and a 3.5mm anterolisthesis of the C3 and C4 vertebrae, which a doctor explained is a displacement of the vertebra in his back.

The majority of Cain’s injuries were treated at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Fayetteville.

According to Adams, Dr. Douglas McFarlane, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Fayetteville, testified that as a result of the injuries he suffered, Cain had pain on a daily basis and he would continue to experience pain each day for the remainder of his life. McFarlane also testified that these injuries were permanent and resulted in significant limitation of motion of his neck and that he should lift no more than 5 pounds. Cain was an active horseman and hunter. As a result of the injuries, he can no longer ride horseback or go hunting.

Adams said the injury occurred when Cain bent down to pick up a bag of dog food from a short pile. Sitting beside the short pile was a stack of dog food bags approximately 7 feet high. When Cain bent down to pick up the dog food from the shorter pile, several 50-pound bags fell off the higher stack. Complete article

Walmart asks court to reconsider jury award to drivers in California 01/23/2020

Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) has asked a federal appeals court to reconsider an appellate panel’s ruling that awarded $54.6 million to a class of former California truck drivers for time spent mostly on 10-hour layovers between trips. The company said faulty guidance from a lower court influenced the award.

In a motion for the panel or the full court to rehear the case, Walmart’s attorneys said the jury was instructed to follow “narrow” language in the retailer’s pay manual to determine if it was exercising control over the drivers even during nondriving times. The reality, Walmart said, was that the drivers could freely separate themselves from the company during their layovers. There was little, if any, control over the drivers because Walmart didn’t require it, the company said. Complete article

Walmart takes a step toward owning the food chain 01/24/2020

New York (CNN Business)America's biggest retailers are pushing back against this country's largest meat processors. The future of the nation's food chain is on the line.

Walmart last week opened a meatpacking plant in south Georgia that will cut, package and label its own brand of steaks and roasts to deliver to meat cases at 500 stores in the region. It is Walmart's first meatpacking plant. Costco has also developed its own farm-to-store poultry production operation in Nebraska to control some of its chicken production.

Although Walmart's plant is a step toward a farm-to-shelf meat production, Walmart doesn't actually operate the facility, nor does it own any cows or butcher the meat. An outside processor will operate the plant in Thomasville, Georgia, 20 miles from the Florida border and a little bigger than the size of a Walmart supercenter. Complete article

That's good for investors watching the company's bottom line. It's less than encouraging for workers hoping to hold onto their jobs. Complete article
