Wal-Mart Crime report May 2016

It seems to be too much to hope for that Walmart would go a full month without any shootings and they didn't but they seem to have come as close this month as they have in a long time with only a handful of high profile shootings; however they still had at least one officer involved shooting of someone waving a gun. He was only injured and taken into custody. There was at least one death for an unrelated event and an evacuation as a result of panic caused by an attempted robbery.

They seem to have had their share of carjackings or attempted kidnappings, though; there were at least three of them. They also had at least a couple of car chases and in addition to the usual number of bomb threats they found explosives at one Walmart, which is unusual; most of the bomb threats are bluffs; and they arrested a suspect in one of the few bombs that actually went off at Walmart about nine years ago. There were at least two police departments that reported their high crime problems in the media. these reports are rare, although the high crime problems seem to be well known by police departments; but when one department come out with public reports it isn't uncommon for at least one other to report similar incidents in their area.

They had a high number of recalls at Walmart this month, including of frozen vegetables, snack bars and rice that may have carried Listeria which has been breaking out repeatedly over the past few years; electric kettles, and pacifiers that might cause a choking hazard.

They also had several problems with bathroom complaints including at least one one that is about someone who was mistakenly considered a transsexual and a father that brought a little girl into the mens room and angered someone who didn't like it. Walmart was asked repeatedly for a policy about how to handle this but refused to provide one. They don't often encourage reasonable discretion; instead setting policies that are made in the corporate office by people unaware of how they're often implemented.

Another report has exposed labor abuses indicating that little has changed since the collapse of a couple of the sweatshops they buy from killed hundreds a couple of years ago; this shouldn't be surprising since the entire political system is constantly trying to sweep these incidents back under the rug every time they get reported. One of their suppliers is involved in another lawsuit and one of their milk plants is getting more tax payer subsidies with little informed scrutiny from the public. They have more prepaid cards that don't work and skimmers have been turning up at many of their registers gathering customer information from any one that uses their cards at them.

Just because shootings are down, for now anyway, doesn't mean that other crimes are down, including petty thefts that result in knifes or tasers being pulled out or even used; and an assault on a police officer by a drunken customer that refused to leave.

They also had an incident where a women arbitrarily seems to have attacked five or six people starting with a six year old whose tooth she knocked out. There must be more to this story like many others but preliminary media reports are rarely complete and they practically never try to understand and prevent long term causes to their high crime problems.

Due to budget cuts, bureaucracy or confusion they even sent a wounded man to Walmart instead of the emergency room on one occasion. I hope there's more to that story as well.

Strange things happen at Wal-Mart!

In 2006 Wake Up Wal-Mart did a study, "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Wal-Mart which showed that it increased when Wal-Marts opened up and that crime was higher at Wal-Mart than at other retailers. Since then Wal-Mart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Wal-Mart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Wal-Mart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Wal-Mart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Wal-Mart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Wal-Mart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.

Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Wal-Mart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Wal-Mart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. The following are a list of incidents that occurred in May 2016. According to the "Is Wal-Mart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year, indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Wal-Mart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Wal-Mart.

Who pays for store security at Walmarts across Tampa Bay Fla.? Taxpayers do 05/11/2016

By ZACHARY T. SAMPSON, LAURA C. MOREL, and ELI MURRAY Design and graphics (see original article below) by MARTIN FROBISHER and ELI MURRAY Times Staff

Police come to shoo away panhandlers, referee parking disputes and check on foul-mouthed teenagers.

They are called to arrest the man who drinks a 98-cent iced tea without paying and capture the customer who joyrides on a motorized shopping cart.

The calls eat up hours of officers’ time. They all start at one place:

Walmart.

Law enforcement logged nearly 16,800 calls in one year to Walmarts in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando counties, according to a Tampa Bay Times analysis. That’s two calls an hour, every hour, every day.

Local Walmarts, on average, generated four times as many calls as nearby Targets, the Times found. Many individual supercenters attracted more calls than the much larger WestShore Plaza mall.

When it comes to calling the cops, Walmart is such an outlier compared with its competitors that experts criticized the corporate giant for shifting too much of its security burden onto taxpayers. Several local law enforcement officers also emphasized that all the hours spent at Walmart cut into how often they can patrol other neighborhoods and prevent other crimes.

“They’re a huge problem in terms of the amount of time that’s spent there,” said Tampa police Officer James Smith, who specializes in retail crime. “We are, as a department, at the mercy of what they want to do.” Complete article

Customers say Walmart-brand prepaid debit cards aren't working, cutting off access to funds 05/18/2016

For the last three days, users of Walmart-brand prepaid debit cards say they've been unable to withdraw cash from ATMs, check their account balances or make purchases, leaving them cut off from their money.

Customers say the problems started early Monday and still hadn't been fixed as of Wednesday afternoon. Though it's not clear how widespread the problems are, the complaints are reminiscent of an outage at prepaid firm RushCard that last year left thousands of customers in the lurch.

Green Dot Corp., the Pasadena company that issues Walmart's MoneyCard prepaid debit cards, said a technical problem is preventing customers from being able to check their balances online or over the phone, an issue that should be fixed by Wednesday night. Complete article

Police: Woman steals makeup at Tx. Walmart, pulls butterfly knife on officer 05/25/2016

AUSTIN, Texas — A woman is facing charges after police say she stole makeup from a South Austin Walmart before threatening a security officer with a butterfly knife.

On May 23, investigators say 28-year-old Justina Espinoza concealed makeup in her purse at the Walmart near I-35 and Slaughter Lane. When a loss prevention officer spotted Espinoza, he confronted her in the parking lot. He says she pulled out a butterfly knife, and made a cutting motion towards him. Because he feared for his life, he backed off and Espinoza left with another man.

The man Espinoza left with had purchased an oil change before he left the Walmart store. Police were able to use his information to track him down at his mother's house, where Espinoza was sitting in the back yard. Police arrested her immediately and found the butterfly knife in her purse.

Christopher Adams said his 7-year-old son, Kyler, and 5-year-old daughter, Emery, both had to go when the family visited the store Sunday to buy blinds and storage bins, so he took them both inside the men’s restroom in the back of the store.

“This guy walks in and goes to the bathroom, the urinal,” Adams recalled Tuesday. “Then he just, like, turns to me and starts freaking out, dropping the ‘F-bomb,’ and what he was freaking out about was that my daughter was in the men’s bathroom.”

The father said he tried to usher his kids away from the man.

“When I turned back around, I got sucker-punched right here,” Adams said, pointing to his left eye, which still was bruised. Complete article

Report slams Walmart for 'exploitative' conditions in Asia factories 05/31/2016

Workers at Asia factories that supply Walmart, H&M and Gap are still being exploited in sweatshop conditions, three years after the deadly collapse of a Bangladeshi factory, according to a worker rights group.

Workers in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and Indonesia who make clothes for Walmart (WMT) face "intensive labour exploitation and abuse," according to a report released Tuesday by the Asia Floor Wage Alliance, an international coalition of trade unions and human rights organizations.

In 2013, a building collapse in Bangladesh killed 1,127 garment workers, creating an international outcry about the human toll of making cheap, fast fashion clothes for wealthier nations like the U.S.

But a series of reports from the Asia Floor Wage Alliance suggests that little has been done to improve conditions for garment workers in developing Asian nations. Complete article

Walmart Supplier Strikes Back at AMG in Lawsuit 05/30/2016

by Arkansas Business Staff on Monday, May. 30, 2016 12:00 am

It wasn’t long ago that we told you about a federal lawsuit involving a sales representative who sued a supplier over abruptly severing their relationship after more than 25 years.

Active Marketing Group Inc. of O’Fallon, Missouri, sued EB Brands Holdings Inc. of Elmsford, New York, and alleged EB owes it nearly $700,000 in commission payments based on work already performed under the contract. It is seeking that amount plus damages of more than $2 million.

Well, now EB has filed its response and denied the allegations of wrongdoing. It said the lawsuit was “premature inasmuch as no commissions are due.” It filed a counterclaim alleging that AMG still has some of EB’s property, including business records, sales and marketing materials, confidential and customer reports and Wal-Mart reports.
