The pandemic took a back seat to massive protests over police shootings, including George Floyd, across the country and at Walmart, this included dozens of riots at Walmart and lots of looting. Walmart may have closed as many, if not more stores as a result of the protests as they did because of the pandemic. But that hasn't slowed the shootings down at their own stores, much if at all. They had at least another eleven shootings, with two people killed by police, one after he killed a Walmart employee and another after a carjacking. (This article was originally posted citing only ten shootings; the eleventh was reported and added a day later.)
The person killed by police after killing an employee was a disgruntled ex-employee that was fired a year ago and another one of the murder suspects was a current employee. There haven't been many other shootings by employees of Walmart in the past few months, but over the years, they've probably had more than any other employer, including much more than the Post Office which previously had a reputation for having a lot of employees "going postal," not because they have more work place shootings than other companies, but because the media drew much more attention to them while reporting each Walmart shooting as an isolated incident, often only covering them locally and declining to keep track of how often they happen.
There were relatively few additional gun related crimes last month, but there were another three bodies found on the premises, including two that were probably natural causes, with one of the bodies decomposing for days if not weeks before being found, another one was a Walmart employee, and the third was an alleged suicide by hanging, which has become much more common since the George Floyd protests and not everyone is convinced all these are suicides. There was another alleged suicide by hanging the month before which hadn't been reported promptly, and a shooting at the very end of May, during a protest about police shootings, that resulted in a death, although that part wasn't reported promptly either. There was also one more death of a Walmart worker from Coronavirus, which brings the total dead for the month to ten.
There were also two previous fatal police shootings from April 2020 and November 2019 that are being investigated further; one where an emotionally unstable person was waving a bat, but family believes he could have been subdued with non-lethal force; and a shootings of a handcuffed man that was trying to escape after stealing a lock-set worth less than $50. The Mayor of that SC town is calling for the removal of the police officers involved in that shooting.
Even though the pandemic was put on the back burner it hasn't gone completely away. The daily death toll is way down from it's peak in April and there are few if any reports of deaths at Walmart; however, infections supposedly continue to rise. This may be partly because they're doing much more testing, including a lot at Walmart. Walmart is often reluctant to report on infections that allegedly happen in their own stores, including employees that test positive, although other sources continue reporting them. And there are still people outraged at the restrictions reacting with violence.
It's not just Walmart that's causing all these problems. A senior citizen and armed robber at Walmart plead guilty at the beginning of last month to a robbery that only took place four weeks earlier and accepted a fifteen year sentence, which, at his age, means life, assuming he serves the full sentence.this is a surprisingly quick plea bargain, but it means he'll have health care provided by the state for the rest of his life, which he might not have had otherwise. Something is seriously wrong with an economic system that spends money on prisons, and wars based on lies, but not health care, education, child care or other programs that reduce violence, like other countries with much lower rates of violence.
Walmart is also being implicated in a murder spree that took place in December 2016, because they didn't secure their ammunition properly, and the suspect was able to steal it from them, even though he couldn't buy it legally, which enabled the shootings spree. That month was a record breaker with 20 shootings at Walmart, which is still the record for a month today, but if these shootings, which didn't happen at the store it would have been at least two or three higher.
There were also numerous major assaults at their stores including a 79-year-old that was dragged during a purse snatching, a man who had his jaw broken, a couple assaulting a teen, a man left naked tied to a tree behind the store, and 83-year-old man arrested for road rage and assault; and a police officer that was filmed beating a Spanish speaking man that just wanted to go through the checkout as they were closing. He couldn't understand English and the cop, who had been disciplined numerous times, interpreted that as resisting arrest, claiming he was assaulted by the video shows otherwise.
Walmart had a few more hit and run incidents last month, at least one auto theft, and another police chase, plus another RV destroyed by fire on the premises and one or two arsons, although a fire behind the store hasn't been conclusively ruled arson. Walmart also had at least five or six more stabbings, including two on police officers at one store, and a couple more threats to stab someone.
Walmart is constantly trying to test even more automation, including self-checkouts even though they know that they lead to much more crime and they ahve to hire more people to watch them on cameras taking up a lot of the money they save. Tax payers pay even more in court costs but that isn't taken into consideration, since it's an externatity paid for by others so it doesn't impact their profits and amounts to a subsidy on crime. Yet they're still testing a store with no more cashiers, and if it increases profits, even at the expense higher crime partly paid for by of taxpayers, then they intend to increase it nationwide, subsidizing their crime problems even more.
The vast majority of crime, including petty shoplifting, but also many more minor assaults hardly gets any media attention, including a continuing practice of walking out with entire shopping carts full of merchandise, partly encouraged by store design, assaults, thefts from other customers, various sexual assaults, and much more.
Walmart had recalls of ground beef for possible E. coli contamination and garden salad mixes potentially linked to growing Cyclospora outbreak, which happens just about every month but reporting on it is minimal so many people may not know to return it. The number of attorney generals calling on them to protect their workers from the pandemic continues to rise as well.
Walmart has a growing revolving door among their executives with other stores that they're supposed to be competing with as well. This is a characteristic of an oligarchy system not a free market economy. The market has been divided up among a small percentage of the public, and only those from the wealthiest class get any control over the economic system. Workers are demanding a voice on the board, yet they're bing denied and the government supports union suppression practices carried out by campaign donors. The fed is now buying up their debt as well, along with many other major corporations, which further concentrates power in the hands of oligarchs, and they're steadily increasing their control of the health care system as well, which should alarm everyone.
Walmart is also having a growing discrimination problem, even though they're spending millions on public relations to portray them as supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Few if any of the organizers consider this sincere, especially since there are many more black people being racially profiled at their stores, by both police and loss prevention officers, who are often off-duty police in many states. Black executives are also losing ground at Walmart. Any small changes like removing multicultural hair products from locked cases or confederate flags only happen after enormous amounts of protests.
Walmart also has periodical problems with roaches and rats across the country, at least one store was shut down for roaches and there was also a large rat caught on camera running down the aisles.
Compared to this the visiting alligators are relatively mild, they just want to do their shopping too, I don't see what the big deal is.
They also get upset when a man strips naked before shopping and then does it again at Sam's club.
Strange things happen at Walmart!
In 2006 Wake Up Walmart did a study, "Is Walmart Safe?" based on incidents in 2004, (PDF) about crime at Walmart which showed that it increased when Walmarts opened up and that crime was higher at Walmart than at other retailers. Since then Walmart Shootings began compiling a list of gun related incidents at Walmart and demonstrated that they have a large number of them, including on average more than one shooting per week somewhere in the country; now after counting them for several years that average is over two per week. In January of 2014 another study, "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" provided additional statistical research indicating that Walmart might be contributing to higher crime rates or at least a slowing of the decline in crime. The study found that. “on average, communities with Walmarts had 17 more property crimes and two more violent crimes per 10,000 people than those communities without Walmarts.” I reviewed this more in Walmart’s crime problem, Rolling Back Safety more than prices? where I explained that although this study is helpful they could have done better with additional data that is available and I reviewed some of that. I also added my own review about why I think that Walmart policies have been contributing to higher crime in a previous blog, Walmart high crime rate continues un-investigaterd and have provided additional information under the author tag Walmart Crime Watch.
Stacy Mitchell has also compiled a list of other studies about Walmart and how they impact society, Key Studies on Big-Box Retail & Independent Business. To the best of my knowledge Walmart has done as little as they seem to get away with, often relying on rhetoric that isn't backed up with action, when it comes to addressing any of their critics concerns, including crime. One of the responses they’ve come up with is what they call "Restorative Justice" which gives first time shoplifters a chance to avoid being arrested or any criminal record if they take an on line course which costs $400 up front or $500 in payments, plus perhaps, reparations. This has been part of the privatization process and often denies suspects of the due process or access to a lawyer, perhaps even intimidating and extorting from some people that might not even be guilty. Walmart seems to be trying to find a way to turn crime into a profit making situation instead of looking for the most effective ways to reduce it. According to the "Is Walmart Safe?" the average store in their sampling had 250 incidents per year indicating that these are only a fraction of the crime reports at Walmart, and presumably, the ones most likely to make the news on the internet nationwide. This isn't statistically representative, as the 2006 or the "Rolling Back Prices and Raising Crime Rates?" study or some of the studies cited by Stacy Mitchell; but it does provide some additional information that may help recognize how many problems there are at Walmart.

An investigation is being conducted after a body was found hanging from a tree in South Fulton, Georgia on Old National Highway Monday morning.
Patrol cars surrounded the local Walmart’s parking lot as authorities tried to determine the cause of death. Channel 2 news reporter Rikki Klaus said the South Fulton detective confirmed that the case was ruled a suicide and no foul play was suspected. Klaus tweeted at 4:29 a.m., “BREAKING- This is truly disturbing…The medical examiner’s office is here.”
She then wrote, “I just got off the phone with the South Fulton detective authorized to share information with the media. She said an unidentified woman was found hanging from a tree overnight near a Walmart on Old National Highway. She said the investigation revealed the woman killed herself. ” Complete article

Suspected Fla. Wal-Mart shoplifter chased down at McDonald’s in The Villages 06/01/2020
A suspected Wal-Mart shoplifter was chased down at McDonald’s at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages.
Lee Roland Johnston, 30, of Leesburg, was carrying a backpack loaded with stolen merchandise shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday when he ran from the nearby Wal-Mart store, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
A Wildwood police officer assisted deputies in apprehending Johnston, who admitted he had thrown the backpack into the bushes. When law enforcement officers retrieved the backpack, they found the $300 in stolen merchandise inside.
Johnston, who had a can of pepper spray in his pocket, said he “screwed up” and shouldn’t have stolen the merchandise, the arrest report said. He also had drug paraphernalia in his possession.
A loss prevention officer at Wal-Mart said Johnston set off a fire alarm when he ran out of a door at the store. Complete article

The suspects stole several items and fled, per a press release from police.

After marching around downtown Arlington for two hours Monday evening, some protesters vandalized stores, according to police.
Around a dozen protesters broke into the Walmart across from AT&T Stadium, at 915 E. Randol Mill Road, after 11 p.m., according to Lt. Christopher Cook, an Arlington Police Department spokesman. Employees were still working in the store. Five were arrested and face charges of felony commercial burglary, Cook said.

Jamie Iannone was a rising star at Walmart through his work at bringing Sam’s Club into the technology forefront. Iannone joined Sam’s Club in 2014 as CEO of SamsClub.com and headed up the retailer’s membership and technology divisions. During his tenure, Sam’s Club worked to improve Scan & Go, launched Sam’s Garage and Ask Sam apps to help customers and employees do their jobs and access services more efficiently. He also oversaw the concept club located in Dallas that is a technology laboratory for the larger retail chain.
“When Jamie came to Sam’s Club they were pretty far behind Walmart in terms of technology capabilities for the front and back-end of clubs. What has not changed is a management culture that refuses to listen to employees on the front lines.
We are the people who know our company best, who see at first hand what’s working and what isn’t, but when we make recommendations to protect customers and the brand’s reputation and long-term success, it’s still radio silence from the top. Walmart’s response to Covid-19 — slow, inadequate, failing to prioritise our health and public health — underscores why workers like me need a voice in shaping corporate policy.
A study by United for Respect found that it took weeks — in some cases almost two months — for Walmart fully to adopt Centers for Disease Control recommendations for employers. While most retailers started launching social-distancing strategies and protective partitions in February and March, Walmart didn’t start limiting customers in its stores or installing sneeze guards until early to mid-April.
And a survey of 1,500 Walmart associates nationwide conducted in early May found that only 9 per cent were able always to maintain at least a six-foot distance from other people at work in April. Only two in five said they trusted Walmart to keep them, their co-workers and customers safe. In my store, many associates are afraid to go to work. Walmart’s current paid leave policies fall woefully short of the basic standards set by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. Currently, the company only offers half pay for paid leave to employees who are confirmed to be COVID-19 positive — upping the pressure to keep working even when sick or symptomatic. In addition, there have been reports of overcrowded stores and a general failure by Walmart to implement measures to ensure that customers and employees maintain a distance of six feet from each other. This is on top of reports of failures by Walmart to adequately sanitize its stores, even after learning of confirmed COVID-19 cases in its workforce — with some employees and customers reporting that they are not being informed of their potential exposure to people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 at Walmart stores. Police determined Gustavo Garcia killed Soto on the same day he shot a farm worker, robbed an Exeter gas station, and shot a woman outside a motel.
The next day, he killed Farmersville father Rocky Jones outside a Visalia gas station before a gunfight with sheriff's deputies, a high-speed police chase, and finally, a crash that killed him.
Garcia was an undocumented immigrant with an armed robbery conviction.
"Mr. Garcia couldn't get ammunition legitimately anywhere, so he had learned that the Walmart in Tulare was an easy place to take ammunition because they didn't have the ammunition properly secured," Wagner said. .....

Police said 26-year-old Lamont Davis of Wilmington gained access to the store by shattering the front glass with with a baseball bat and a shopping cart, allowing 31-year-old Traci Roane of Wilmington, and three teenagers, to also enter, where they took an undisclosed amount of property and displays.
Police were able to recovery all lost property, and it was returned to the store, the business sustained more than an estimated $2,000 in damage.
Davis was charged with felony 3rd degree burglary, 2nd degree conspiracy, theft under $1500, and criminal mischief. He was issued a $5,000 unsecured bond. Complete article

The suspects reportedly removed several undisclosed items and then fled form the business.
Responding officers observed a maroon Chevrolet Impala traveling at a high rate of speed from the location and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. After a brief, high-speed pursuit, the vehicle was eventually found abandoned in the 200 block of Caldwell Street. Several items believed to have been stolen from Walmart were recovered inside the vehicle.
The police are searching for information on multiple vehicles and up to as many as 12 individuals who were involved in the break in. Complete article

A Villager found himself behind bars Wednesday after a nasty skirmish with a woman in the parking lot of the Summerfield Wal-Mart.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called to the store, located at 17961 S. U.S. Hwy. 27/441, and when he arrived, the woman told him she had been involved in a collision in the parking lot with 83-year-old Roy Maurice Hall, of the Village of Palo Alto. She said when she got out of her vehicle an argument ensued with Hall, a sheriff’s office report states.
The woman told deputies that Hall repeatedly said he was “going to punch her in the face” if she didn’t stop cursing at him. She said she attempted to take a photo of the Hall’s vehicle for insurance purposes and he stepped toward her and struck her in the face with a closed fist, a sheriff’s office report states.
The deputy noted that the woman, who was wearing glasses, had a red, puffy area under her left eye. She said she didn’t need medical attention and reported overhearing Hall telling his wife, who was a passenger in his vehicle, “to not say anything and he was going to lie about the situation,” the report says. Early last month, the National Retail Federation (NRF) sent a memo to Congress with a list of the priorities that the trade group believed should be in any new stimulus legislation. At the top of that list was liability reform.
The NRF, along with other business groups, is urging lawmakers to limit the liability of employers in cases brought by workers sickened with COVID-19 or individuals who may have become infected with the virus after coming in contact with workers.
Some have suggested that a more equitable response to employees sickened by the novel coronavirus may be alternative “no-fault” civil litigation. The thinking here is that workers would be compensated for having become ill while working in a store or a warehouse, but that companies would not be bankrupted in addressing all the potential claims against them.
Employee suits being brought against retailers is not a hypothetical.
Amazon.com is being sued after a worker at its warehouse in Staten Island, NY contracted the novel coronavirus and later saw family members become ill, including a cousin who died. Reuters reports that the lawsuit claims Amazon puts its warehouse workers in a “place of danger” by forcing them to meet job requirements that prevent them “from socially distancing, washing their hands, and sanitizing their workspaces.” Complete article

I visited a Walmart store near me during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, and I found it to be generally pretty early about making coronavirus-related changes to its operation compared to other, similar retailers.
This was the first retailer near me that also carried groceries which adjusted its operating hours, for example, in addition to limiting the number of people who could be inside the store at any one time. It was the first place I encountered an employee at the door with a clicker only allowing a few shoppers in at a time, as well as giant speakers outside blaring constant messages from the Walmart CEO on a loop, in a kind of dystopian “thank you for your cooperation” style. Another of the changes included carving out a portion of the store’s operating hours to serve only the elderly and vulnerable populations — a coronavirus-inspired change which Walmart is now keeping in place indefinitely. SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A man accused of stabbing two Louisiana Walmart employees and injuring a third Friday afternoon is now in custody.
It happened just before 4 p.m. near the entrance of the Walmart Shopping Center Shreveport-Barksdale Highway in Shreve City, where a Subway used to operate inside the store but is now closed. Initial information from police indicating the victims were Subway employees was incorrect.
According to police, 31-year-old Roger Lindsay pepper-sprayed the employees when they tried to stop him from shoplifting candy and a soft drink, and then stabbed two of them.
“They tried to thwart shoplifting and he turned violent on those employees who were trying to do their job and stop him and get the police here to get him detained,” said SPD Cpl. Angie Willhite.

The Walmart in Cherryville was closed for several hours Saturday morning as police investigated the death of a store employee.
Gaston Emergency Medical Services were called out to the scene at 8:02 a.m. Saturday, but the call was cancelled enroute.
Officers with the Cherryville Police Department responded and determined that the male employee found inside a bathroom at the store had died of natural causes.

Walmart gets tax break in Queensbury NY 06/06/2020
QUEENSBURY — The Town Board accepted a settlement with Walmart that would lower the retailer’s property assessment by $2.45 million.
The school board will vote Monday.
The settlement resolves tax appeals that Walmart has filed for the past three years. Walmart agreed to drop those, without any refund, in exchange for a reduced assessment beginning now.
The store on Route 9 had an assessment of $14.3 million. It will be reduced to $11.85 million.
That will save the store about $40,000 in school taxes, $10,000 in county taxes and $1,300 in town taxes. Complete article

A Cedar Knolls man was caught on surveillance video punching and shoving a Walmart employee who confronted him for shoplifting, authorities charged.
A man later identified as Tyler R. Negron was seen by a Walmart worker only scanning some items at a self-checkout station on May 16, Hanover Police Chief Mark D. Roddy said.
When the employee asked to see his receipt, 21-year-old Negron punched him in the face and fled with the stolen items, Roddy said.

Once there, officers discovered Duers, of 1 E. Main St., stealing items along with 33-year-old Stacy Updike, also of 1 E. Main St., and James Wright, 30, of 18 Sands St., according to the department. Outside, waiting to drive the group away, was Philicia Twomey, 30, of 58 East Court St., Altmann said.
When officers searched Duers they discovered a large cache of narcotics big enough to indicate he intended to sell the drugs, according to the news release. Twomey had a small amount of narcotics and some hypodermic needles on her, Altmann stated. Complete article

A juvenile suspect was seriously injured Monday after allegedly trying to shoplift from the Gravois Bluffs Walmart.

An anti-shoplifting team at Walmart called deputies Tuesday night, according to the sheriff's office. A deputy confronted the suspect in the parking lot and at one pointed pulled his taser. The suspect then pulled out a gun and opened fire at the deputy.

The facility is expected to feature 146 docks and parking for 1,985 cars and up to 916 trailers, according to public filings.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two women are suing a Pearland Walmart after they say they were assaulted and discriminated because of their race by an employee.
Samantha Sharpe and her aunt, Cleatris Johnson, say they were walking out of the store around Thanksgiving last year, when an employee asked to see their receipt.
After Sharpe and Johnson noticed two white men walk out the store before them without being stopped, they say they decided to continue walking out the store.
A person, later identified as a loss prevention employee, approached the women before allegedly grabbing a bag out of Sharpe's hand while screaming accusations.
According to a statement from Sharpe's lawyer, the employee damaged Sharpe's cellphone, earbuds and glasses.
According to lawyers, employees in the store called police, who they say showed up and placed Sharpe in handcuffs, then released her after verifying her purchases. Complete article

A person, later identified as a loss prevention employee, approached the women before allegedly grabbing a bag out of Sharpe's hand while screaming accusations.
According to a statement from Sharpe's lawyer, the employee damaged Sharpe's cellphone, earbuds and glasses.

The officer then tries to grab Rodriguez’s arm in an apparent attempt to detain him, the video shows, but Rodriguez pulls away and pushes the officer’s arm away. The officer tries to grab Rodriguez again and once again Rodriguez pulls away.
In translating this video, Rodriguez is telling the officer in Spanish: “Let me go, don’t touch me."
That’s when the officer punches Rodriguez in the face multiple times, knocking him to the ground and bloodying his face while his wife screams in the background.
After a struggle, Rodriguez is handcuffed while his wife pulls at the officer’s arms.
David Rodriguez, Yoel’s nephew, said his uncle and aunt shown in the video don’t speak English which played a role in what happened.

A Dothan Police Department release states that Luther Hutto, 22, forced himself on a female victim at a psychiatric clinic on the 2800 block of Hartford Highway.
After responding to the report, Dothan officers took Hutto, who was still at the scene, into custody. The DPD then looked into a previous report involving Hutto at a local Walmart on May 7, 2020, according to Lt. Scott Owens.

I got kicked out of the North Logan Walmart tonight. I had been shopping there for 1.5 hours and had filled 2 carts full of groceries for my dozens of employees that are in mandatory quarantine because of Covid and can’t shop for themselves.
At 8:25 p.m. the Walmart suddenly announced on the speakers that the Walmart was closing at 8:30 p.m. and to finish shopping. At 8:30 p.m. they announced they were closed and for everybody to immediately go to the checkout stands. I only had two items left on my list, but a Walmart employee was suddenly standing in the aisle rounding everybody up, physically forcing everybody to immediately go to the check out.
I explained that all of the groceries I had were for victims of Covid and these people can’t leave their house for groceries because of mandatory quarantine and that I only needed 2 more items. It all fell on deaf ears without one ounce of sympathy. I got the last 2 items on my way out and I was at the checkout stands at 8:36 p.m., but apparently they had radioed up to the cashiers and told them not to allow me to check out.
And sure enough, another Walmart employee came over and physically blocked me from checking out saying I was not allowed to check out and to leave my two carts full of groceries and leave the store. I explained that my understanding was that certain checkers stay until 9:00 p.m from my experience last week shopping there for these same Covid victims were I was able to check out at 8:45 pm, and I explained that these important groceries were for victims of Covid. An overhead view shows McCree hand the item to a checkout clerk, who rings it up. McCree then takes the item and briskly walks away without paying. There is no audio, but the clerk clearly turns as McCree walks off, points in his direction and says something.
The next video takes place almost two hours later, when McCree returned to the store (his family and the attorneys in their civil suit claim he did so with the intention of paying for the item he took). McCree is seen talking with officers who escort him to the front foyer of the store. He is handcuffed there as other customers enter and exit the store. Two people were cited following an altercation with Algood Police officers at Walmart on Main Street Wednesday.
Allyson Young was reportedly shoplifting at the store when Sgt. Ryan Allred was called to the scene.
Allred detained Young while he was investigating the incident, according to the APD release.
"At that time, a male subject, identified as Brandon Loughman, attempted to aggressively interfere with Sgt. Allred's investigation, which caused Sgt. Allred to tase him," the release states.
While Allred was placing Loughman into custody, Young allegedly tried to run away from the scene.
"Thanks to a situationally aware citizen, Young was unable to flee any further than the sidewalk where Officer Jason Winningham apprehended her," according to the release.
According to the release, the Putnam County Justice Center refused to accept either arrest because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Young received citations for shoplifting, evading arrest, resisting arrest, simple possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm while under the influence. Complete article

Bracey Myles was loading groceries into his trunk Wednesday evening when two police cars pulled up next to his car.
The 26-year-old Black man said he put his hands in the air as police told him and his fiance, Alfreda Lange, 20, that they’d been accused of stealing from the store.
The encounter in the parking lot of a Holton, Kansas, Walmart went on for about 20 minutes, Lange said, while their infant son was left in the hot car. When police told Lange she couldn’t turn the car on to keep her son from overheating, Myles said, he started recording. ......
The three officers, who were from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Holton Police Department, asked to see the couples’ receipt and their ID’s but did not look through their groceries, Lange said. For those 20 minutes, she said, an officer held the receipt as they told the couple they were investigating.
“I think after they realized that there was nothing that occurred they were looking for an excuse as to why we were still being detained and why they were still there,” Lange said.

Walmart's Black employees cannot wait five years for changes that our communities have been calling for for decades. If Walmart truly wants to be a corporate leader in addressing systemic anti-Black racism, it needs to start by changing workforce practices that are exacerbating our country's inexcusable racial wealth gap.
One of us is a Walmart associate of 12 years, the other a leader of Community Change, a national community-based organization dedicated to building local and national people power, particularly among low-income people of color. VACAVILLE (KPIX 5) — A Vacaville man claims his recent shopping trip to Walmart ended with him being racially profiled and eventually told to leave or get arrested for trespassing.
Joshua Lane, an African American married father of two was shopping for a movie projector for his children at the Walmart in Vacaville on March 28. When he began to be followed by security personnel.
Lane, who works as a longshoreman in Oakland says he had a conversation initially with one man working security.
“I told him I’m a working man, and showed him a picture of my wife and kids,” said Lane. “He kind of apologized but told me ‘You fit the description,'” said Lane.
Lane said he went over to another aisle and noticed other people trailing him, including a woman who began closely monitoring him.
“We moved to another aisle and continued speaking. That’s when the lady followed me again,” said Lane. “This happened at least three different times in three different aisles.”
Lane began recording the encounter on his cell phone, which his wife posted on Facebook soon after the incident. In the video, the woman who did not identify herself is seen calling someone on the phone and is heard saying, “He’s being hostile and threatening.”
“She then asked me to leave” said Lane. ‘When she said those words and I knew she was on the phone as well, I ceased everything and I headed towards the exit.” Complete article

The video, which was reportedly filmed in Orlando, Fla., shows the man walking up to the entrance of the store before an employee appears and attempts to stop the man from entering. The mask-less man then shoves the employee backward into the store — not once, but thrice — and ends up falling on the ground after the third attempt.

An unmarked police vehicle got behind the suspect’s vehicle on East Second Street. A New Hampshire man allegedly kidnapped and left naked and tied to a tree Friday night reportedly owned his assailant $500, Manchester police said in court documents, the Union Leader reported Monday.
Ronny “Spanish Jay” Betances, 37, has been charged with kidnapping, robbery, criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, and two counts of simple assault charges, the paper said.
Betances was arrested on Saturday, as CrimeOnline originally reported, after the victim, identified as 45-year-old Christopher Upham, freed himself and called police. Upham also identified Ariel Dupuis, 29, as one of his assailants. She was arrested Sunday night on charges of criminal liability to kidnapping and criminal liability to robbery.
Upham told police that the saga began on Thursday in Manchester, when he was a passenger in a car driven by Betances, who got into an accident, according to a police report. Betances gave Upham $100 and some heroin and told him to rent a car for him, but Upham told detectives ignored messages from Betances for the rest of the day. ........
The group drove to Derry, about 13 miles away from Manchester, and Betances bought bleach, a rope, and a winch cable from the Walmart.
Behind the store, Betances allegedly tied Upham to a tree, poured bleach over his body and face, and slashed him in the chest with his knife. Complete article

Five total violations were cited in the report, four of which were high-priority.
About six live roaches were found, one on a prep table next to the bread warmer station, one on the wall next to the prep station, two on a box underneath the prep table and two in the back kitchen, according to the report.
Dead roaches and roach excrement and/or droppings were also found by the inspector in the reach-in cooler.

According to MPD Public Information Officer Lieutenant Len Ames, officers were dispatched to the store around 5:30 p.m. following an incident with Bedham and another woman, identified as Ashley Cartwright.
The incident ended when Bedham was arrested for one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of unlawfully carrying a weapon.
Bedham livestreamed the incident on Facebook after the initial encounter with Cartwright in the store. She stated during the video that the issues with Cartwright come from a family dispute. During the video Bedham did display a firearm on the passenger side floor of her vehicle, though she is never seen explicitly threatening Cartwright with the weapon.

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. - When San Leandro nixed $1.7-million from its police budget last week, the city council also ended up cutting $700,000 from a special program that caters to the city's homeless population. Now, the former fiancee of Steven Taylor -- the 33-year-old man who was killed by officers in April after customers reported that he was waving a bat inside a Walmart -- is imploring the council to slow down on making a drastic change to the police budget. She says the council should reconsider indiscriminately defunding the department amid the national outcry in the wake of George Floyd's death and anger toward police officers.
In fact, Edna Jane Reed wrote a letter to KTVU as well as to San Leandro's mayor, asking to save the police department's two officers and two case managers who are tasked with helping the homeless, like herself and Taylor
Specifically, Reed said the case managers and Officers Joseph Camarillo and Warren de Guzman literally saved Taylor's life a few years ago.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (WPDE) — Officers found the people and car they were looking for after shots were fired at a Hartsville Walmart, according to Hartsville Police Lt. Mark Blair.

Walmart is reviewing its policy on working with suppliers that use prison labor as civil unrest over systemic racism roils the U.S. and activists target companies that benefit from the practice.
“As permitted by law, a small number of our U.S. suppliers use voluntary labor as part of prison rehabilitation programs,” Walmart said in an emailed statement provided by spokesperson Tricia Moriarty. The company’s policies “strictly prohibit involuntary prison labor” and workers that are employed by Walmart suppliers are paid “prevailing wages,” the retailer said.
The review is part of the firm’s racial equity initiatives announced this month as protests broke out worldwide following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart said on June 10 that it would stop keeping “multicultural” hair care and beauty products in locked cases.
Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon also pledged to make changes to give the company’s 340,000 Black workers in the U.S. more opportunities. A $100 million pledge to address systemic racism by Walmart and the founding Walton family is the second-largest corporate commitment to date.
While the U.S. makes up close to 5% of the global population, it has almost 25% of the world’s prisoners, with about 2.3 million inmates, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Black men are disproportionately more likely to go to prison than White men.
Prison labor is legal in the U.S., but it’s used mostly for the public sector. Only about 6,000 prisoners work for private industry, according to Paul Wright, editor of Prison Legal News and director of the Human Rights Defense Center. Complete article

CareZone’s technology includes a mobile app that helps individuals and families organize health information and manage medications. That includes a method it developed to scan prescription labels and insurance cards so that users can input that information directly into the app.

A man entered a Walmart distribution center in California and started firing at random targets, killing one person before officers fatally shot him during an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.

It happened at about 2:15 PM on June 26, 2020, at 20251 State Highway 18 in Apple Valley.
Store employees attempted to make contact with the suspect, Andrew Steely, and he swung the machete at them and threaten to kill them before running away, officials said.
When deputies from the Apple Valley Station arrived they located the suspect matching the description and was armed with the machete. Steely fled from police and attempted to run toward the large rock hillside behind the store waving the weapon, officials said.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in updated alerts Friday that the number of reported cases grew to 206 with 23 hospitalizations. The agencies are advising consumers to avoid select salads sold at Walmart, Hy-Vee, Aldi and Jewel-Osco stores.
According to the FDA, all of the recalled salads were sold in mid-western states and manufactured by a Fresh Express production facility in Streamwood, Illinois. Other retail brands of salad may be impacted, the FDA said.
“Consumers should not eat and restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve any Fresh Express products currently on the market that were made in the Streamwood, Illinois, production facility and contain either iceberg lettuce, red cabbage or carrots,” the FDA notice said. Complete article

According to authorities, two victims showed up at the emergency room at United Regional at about 11 p.m. Friday, June 26 with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Authorities said the victims reported they were shot in the parking lot of Walmart in a car with two other occupants.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The story of a local black man found hanging behind a Walmart near Decatur and Charleston went viral in the valley on Monday.
Many viewers tagged News 3 on social media and called on our station for answers. We have confirmed with family and the coroner that it was in fact a suicide.
On Wednesday someone found 35-year-old Marcus Carr hanging from a fence behind the Walmart, he died on the way to the hospital.
His family tells News 3, Las Vegas police told them that Marcus died by suicide, but they were left with so many other questions. Complete article

Police respond to reported fight at Charlotte NC Walmart 06/29/2020
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Police are investigating a stabbing incident after a reported fight broke out inside of a Charlotte Walmart Monday afternoon.
Officers were called to the store on Wilkinson Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. after a call was received in regard to several people fighting.
Police said one person said they were stabbed, but injuries appear to be non-life-threatening. Complete article

A Fall River woman is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery after allegedly striking a Walmart shopper repeatedly in the head with her cell phone.
Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said a woman contacted police Sunday morning to report she saw a video online of an assault that occurred at the Saugus Walmart on June 27.
The woman sent the video to police and reported that one of the women who commented on the post identified herself as the aggressor, Giorgetti said.
Just before noon on June 28, a 28-year-old Winthrop woman came to the station to report she was the victim of the assault and battery at Walmart, Giorgetti said. Complete article

Three people were hospitalized for gunshot wounds Tuesday after police say shots were exchanged during an altercation in Marietta.
According to an email from Marietta Police spokesperson Chuck McPhilamy, the incident occurred near the Walmart at 1785 Cobb Parkway South, but an exact address was not known as of Tuesday night.
"Preliminary indications are that some sort of dispute led to a fight, including gunfire between the two parties," McPhilamy wrote. "All individuals involved are in custody." Complete article

Carl Green, a longtime Walmart employee known in the community for his work ethic and kindness, died earlier this week.
Green worked as a stockman at the Walmart Supercenter on New Franklin Road for 26 years. His job included greeting and assisting customers, as well as moving and arranging shopping carts for easy access. Regular customers knew Green for assisting elderly customers and making people smile.
In early June, Green’s coworkers celebrated his 26th anniversary with the company, singing his praises and presenting gifts to him. Members of the LaGrange Fire Department attended and paraded fire trucks — Green had a love for the sirens. Complete article
